The tourism boom has bolstered Spain's economy, with the sector contributing approximately 13 percent to the country's GDP, the AFP reports.

"In 2024, the forecast for international tourists is around 94 million, marking a 10 percent increase compared to 2023, which was already a record year," Hereu stated during a press conference in Madrid.

The surge in visitors also brought significant economic gains, with foreign tourists spending an estimated €126 billion ($130 billion) in 2024—a 16 percent rise from the previous year. Spain's growth rates have remained robust, outpacing much of the sluggish eurozone economy, driven in part by strong tourism performance.

However, the tourism boom has sparked tensions in popular destinations. Locals in hotspots such as Barcelona and Malaga have voiced concerns about rising rents and the transformation of their neighbourhoods due to an influx of visitors.

In response, both cities have introduced measures to regulate short-term tourist rentals, aiming to mitigate public discontent and curb skyrocketing housing prices.

The year 2024 has witnessed a remarkable surge in cryptocurrency ownership across the globe.

With increasing investor confidence and more supportive regulatory environments, the adoption of digital currencies has reached new heights.

Here's a detailed look at how crypto ownership has grown by continent over the past year.

South America

South America has experienced the most significant growth in crypto ownership, with a staggering increase of 116.5% (55.2 million owners) from 2023 to 2024. This surge is largely driven by countries like Argentina and Brazil, where economic instability and hyperinflation have led many to seek refuge in digital assets. Argentina, in particular, has seen crypto ownership rates soar to 18.9% of the population.

Oceania

Oceania follows closely with a 114.3% (3 million owners) increase in crypto ownership. Australia has been at the forefront of this growth, supported by a robust regulatory framework and a growing number of regional crypto exchanges. The initial deposit values among retail investors have also seen a significant rise, reflecting the increasing trust in digital currencies.

Europe

Europe has seen a 60.3% increase in crypto ownership , with the number of crypto owners rising from 30.7 million in 2023 to 49.2 million in 2024. Countries like Germany, the UK, and France have been key contributors to this growth, driven by a combination of favourable regulations and growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies.

North America

In North America, crypto ownership has grown by 38.6%, with the number of owners increasing from 52.1 million to 72.2 million. The United States and Canada continue to lead the region, with significant investments from both retail and institutional investors. The doubling of Bitcoin's price this year has also played a crucial role in boosting investor confidence.

Asia

Asia remains the largest market for cryptocurrencies, with ownership growing by 21.8% in 2024. The continent is home to more than half of the world's crypto owners (326.8 million owners), with significant contributions from countries like India, China, and Thailand. In Singapore, nearly a quarter of the population owns some form of cryptocurrency, highlighting the region's strong adoption rates.

Africa

Africa has seen a more modest growth rate of 8.5% (43.5 million owners) in crypto ownership. Despite this, the continent remains a crucial market for digital currencies, particularly in countries like Nigeria and South Africa. The use of cryptocurrencies for remittances and as a hedge against local currency devaluation continues to drive adoption in the region.

Over 18 million voters are anticipated to participate in the election at 40,975 polling stations spread across the country's 16 regions.

The country returned to multi-party democracy in 1992 under Jerry John Rawlings through the 1992 constitution, which brought into force the 4th republic.

A general election involves voting on two levels at the same time: presidential and parliamentary.

Presidential candidates

Ghanaians will be choosing the sovereign leader from 12 candidates. These candidates include incumbent Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the main opposition leader and ex-President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who is contesting for the fourth time in the 4th republic.

On the candidature list is also a former trade minister, Alan Kojo Kyerematen, who broke away from the ruling NPP to become an independent. There is also the real estate magnate and political newcomer, Nana Kwame Bediako, running as an independent.

Other candidates include Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankuma of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the only female candidate. Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Party (APP), Christian Kwabena Andrews of Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Mohammed Frimpong of National Democratic Party (NDP), Daniel Augustus Lartey of Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Kofi Koranteng, an independent candidate, George Twum Barim-Adu, an independent candidate, and Akua Donkor.

Despite her recent passing, Akua Donkor remains on the ballot, with votes for her to be declared invalid by the Electoral Commission .

Electoral process

Ghana’s presidential elections use a two-round system: if no candidate secures a majority in the first round, a runoff is held between the top two candidates. Parliamentary seats are decided by whoever gets the most votes in each constituency.

Subsequently, parliamentary results are announced immediately after counting at the constituency level, usually on the same day. Presidential results, however, are first announced at the 16 Regional Collation Centres before the final declaration at the Electoral Commission's National Headquarters, typically within 72 hours after polls close.

Facts

Ghana holds its presidential and parliamentary elections every four years, as outlined in the 1992 Constitution. Although not required by law, both elections have been held on the same day since December 1996. All citizens aged 18 and above can register to vote.

For the upcoming December 7 elections, 18,774,159 voters are registered out of an estimated population of 35 million. Historically, voter turnout has been high, with 79% participation recorded in the December 2020 elections.

Just like in many other countries, inflation, high cost of living , and unemployment are the key issues that will set the tone for the eventual winner of the elections. This is the ninth general election in the 4th republic.

The election, which took place in March 2024 , was marked by high hopes and significant expectations for reform and progress.

President Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Sonko campaigned on a platform of sweeping reforms aimed at tackling corruption, improving economic conditions, and securing a greater share of the country's natural resources for its people.

Their victory was seen as a break from the political system of former President Macky Sall, with promises of a new era for Senegal.

However, the public sentiment now shows disappointment and the hastiness to change the government come 2029.

"They talked to us about projects, but so far they haven't done anything. They've done nothing. The Senegalese were expecting more of them, but for the moment they've done nothing," Mamoudou Soumare, a student shared with AFP.

On the other hand, Malick Fall, a shopkeeper shared: "I would have preferred the political parties to stop fighting, the left and the right. They should talk to us about the problems of the Senegalese people. The high cost of living, rent, youth employability and health too. Because we're in the 21st century, normally a Senegalese who's sick no longer should have to pay for treatment. That's a problem."

Despite the initial optimism, the new administration has faced significant challenges. One of the major hurdles has been the lack of a parliamentary majority, which has hindered the government's ability to pass key legislation.

This political gridlock led President Faye to dissolve the opposition-led National Assembly and call for snap elections scheduled for Sunday, November 17, 2024.

"In any case, the Senegalese are not crazy. For example, if they (Pastef) have a majority in the National Assembly, if they do nothing, then we'll change them. In 2029, we're waiting for them. We'll get rid of them and bring in someone else who can change Senegal. That's all there is to it," Mamoudou Soumare added.
