The explosion occurred on the Pan-American Highway in Cajibío, where authorities say suspected FARC dissidents launched an explosive device at passing vehicles, causing widespread destruction. Emergency teams, including the Red Cross, rushed victims to nearby hospitals, while local indigenous leaders called on the government of Gustavo Petro to strengthen civilian protection in conflict zones. Officials blamed armed factions linked to dissident commanders operating in the region, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in southwestern Colombia, where violence persists despite past peace efforts.

Election race tightens in final stretch

A new voting simulation reported by El Comercio shows Peru’s 2026 presidential race remains highly volatile just days before the April 12 election. The poll suggests no clear frontrunner, with several candidates clustered closely and a significant share of undecided voters. Analysts say the “electoral board keeps shifting” as alliances and late campaign dynamics influence voter preferences. The fragmented landscape reflects broader political instability following years of institutional crisis. Experts warn that the lack of a dominant candidate could lead to a highly contested second round. The findings underline the unpredictability of one of Peru’s most uncertain elections in recent history .

One dead and dozens injured in Lima stadium incident

At least one person has died, and dozens were injured following a crowd incident outside Lima’s Alejandro Villanueva Stadium ahead of a match involving Alianza Lima. Authorities ruled out any structural collapse, indicating the incident was caused by disorder among fans gathered for a pre-match event. Emergency services treated numerous injured people, several of them in critical condition, as investigations continue into the circumstances. Officials and club representatives pledged full cooperation to determine responsibility. Despite the incident, the domestic league confirmed the fixture would go ahead as planned. The tragedy has renewed concerns over crowd control and safety at major sporting events in Peru.

Peruvian engineer joins historic Artemis II moon mission

Peruvian engineer Jackelynne Silva Martinez has been highlighted for her role in NASA’s Artemis II, the mission set to orbit the Moon. Her participation marks a significant milestone for Peru’s presence in global space exploration. According to reports by La Republica, Silva Martínez is contributing to key engineering aspects of the programme. The mission is part of broader efforts to return humans to the Moon and pave the way for future Mars exploration. Her achievement has been widely celebrated as an inspiration for young scientists in Peru. Officials and academics emphasised the importance of investing in science and technology to build on such successes.

Mining exports surge driven by gold and copper

Peru’s mining exports recorded a sharp increase of 47.6% in December 2025, according to figures from the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru cited by La Republica. The growth was largely driven by strong international demand for gold and copper, the country’s main export commodities . The figures highlight the continued importance of the mining sector to Peru’s economy, accounting for a significant share of export revenues. Authorities noted that global market conditions and production levels both contributed to the surge. Economists say the trend could support economic recovery if sustained. However, they also stress the need for diversification to reduce dependence on raw materials.

Peruvian scientists highlight climate impact in Antarctica

A group of Peruvian researchers participating in Antarctic missions have warned about the growing impact of climate change on the continent’s megafauna. According to La Republica, the scientists—described as ambassadors of Peru and science—are studying how rising temperatures affect marine ecosystems and species survival. Their findings point to shifts in animal behaviour and habitat conditions linked to global warming. The research forms part of Peru’s ongoing scientific presence in Antarctica. Experts stress that such studies are crucial for understanding global climate patterns. The initiative also highlights Peru’s contribution to international environmental research efforts.

Bolivia’s cash crisis: How a plane crash sparked nationwide confusion over banknotes

In late February 2026, a Bolivian Air Force cargo plane carrying newly printed banknotes for the country’s central bank crashed near El Alto airport, killing more than twenty people and injuring dozens. But beyond the human tragedy, the incident triggered a nationwide crisis over something as ordinary as cash.

The aircraft was transporting about 423 million bolivianos in newly printed bills destined for the Central Bank of Bolivia. When the plane veered off the runway and crashed onto a busy avenue, millions of banknotes were scattered across the street. Crowds quickly gathered, and some people rushed to collect the money, forcing police to disperse them with tear gas while authorities destroyed part of the cash to prevent it from entering circulation.

But the real turmoil came in the days that followed. Because the bills on board had not yet officially entered circulation, the Central Bank temporarily suspended the validity of certain Series B banknotes, particularly the 10, 20 and 50 boliviano denominations. The bank also published serial numbers linked to the shipment and warned that any notes matching those numbers would be considered invalid.

The decision, meant to protect the financial system, created widespread confusion across the country. Many businesses, transport operators and markets began rejecting all Series B banknotes, even those that were perfectly legal. As rumours spread, thousands of Bolivians rushed to banks to exchange their cash or verify whether the bills they carried were still valid.

To manage the situation, the Central Bank launched a digital verification system allowing citizens to check their money. By entering the serial number of a banknote online, users can confirm whether it belongs to the group of bills linked to the crash or if it remains valid for circulation. Officials emphasised that only a small portion of the notes involved in the accident were invalid, while the vast majority of Series B banknotes remain legal tender.

Even so, the crisis exposed how fragile everyday transactions can be when trust in cash is shaken. Vendors, taxi drivers and small businesses reported difficulties accepting certain bills, and many people turned increasingly to digital payments or bank transfers to avoid the uncertainty. Long queues formed outside banks as citizens tried to confirm the legitimacy of their money.

Weeks after the crash, the confusion has begun to ease as authorities clarify which notes are valid and businesses slowly resume accepting Series B bills. Yet the episode has left a lasting lesson: in a cash-dependent economy , even a brief disruption to the trust behind banknotes can ripple quickly through daily life, transforming a tragic accident into a nationwide economic headache.

Speaking at a press conference in La Paz, Central Bank President David Espinoza Torrico said the institution had signed a 2025 contract with Grain Currency Malta Limited to supply 967 million boliviano banknotes and explained that currency only enters legal circulation once it is received and authorised by the bank. He stated that the shipment was being transported to La Paz when the aircraft crashed, stressing that the recovered notes have no legal value and must be returned to the Central Bank of Bolivia or an authorised financial institution. The Bolivian Air Force Hercules C-130 went down while landing at El Alto International Airport, leaving at least 15 people dead after reportedly skidding off the runway in severe weather and striking vehicles.

According to Nigerian police and road safety officials, the incident occurred around 11:00 am on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Makun in Ogun State.

Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention. Local authorities confirmed he was “rescued alive” and is “fine”. Two other individuals in the vehicle escaped unhurt, while two others were confirmed dead at the scene.

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria stated that five adult males were involved in the crash. The vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with the number plate KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck. Officials suspect the jeep was travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit and crashed during an overtaking manoeuvre.

Eyewitness reports and preliminary investigations indicate the collision occurred while the vehicle attempted to overtake and lost control. Joshua was seated in the back of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Joshua, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, has family ties to Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has stated that he is gathering more information following reports of the incident.

The accident happened days after Joshua’s sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami, during what was described as a holiday visit to Nigeria.

The incident occurred in the city centre at the chain’s branch on Dr. Alberto G Noriega Street around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT).

Footage from the scene shows police securing the area and Red Cross personnel assisting survivors, while the store remains severely damaged. Eyewitnesses described harrowing moments as they helped pull victims from the flames. "It’s truly a scene I will never forget," one resident said, recalling the chaos and the thick smoke.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo noted that several minors were among the victims and that most deaths were caused by smoke inhalation rather than burns. He added that there is currently no evidence to suggest a criminal motive.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she had directed the Interior Secretary to deploy a support team to assist the families of those killed. Authorities are investigating potential causes, including electrical faults, gas leaks, or a transformer failure.

The tragedy has drawn international attention, highlighting concerns over public safety in commercial spaces and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban areas.

Heavy machinery worked to clear the debris while firefighters, civil defence units and local volunteers coordinated operations, as community members gathered around the site, some cheering the rescuers on.

Authorities believe the miners are buried between 28 and 30 metres deep, but the search has become more difficult as water has begun flooding the tunnel, raising concerns for both those trapped and emergency teams. “Right now, we are still waiting for more help because it’s needed. We need more help, as we don’t know how many metres deep or in which exact area the missing people are located”, said Víctor Alfonso Valencia, coordinator of the Aires de Garrapatero Guard.

The collapse occurred in the early hours of Friday at an open-pit excavation that operates illegally, though local residents highlighted the desperation that drives people to such work. “Whether the mine is illegal or not, people are looking for work – it’s for their family’s livelihood. So don’t talk about it being illegal, because when people are hungry, we’re not going to let ourselves starve. People look for a way to eat, to provide for their families”, said community member and risk guardian Margarita Cayapu Méndez.

With uncertainty over how long the emergency might last and limited medical resources in the area, civil defence officers warned that logistical challenges remain, while families and residents continue urging authorities to deploy more assistance. Illegal gold mining remains a structural issue in Colombia, where government attempts to formalise the sector and eradicate illicit operations have met with only limited success.

Flames engulfed dozens of vehicles, and emergency crews rushed to contain the blaze and treat the wounded.

The tanker, carrying over 49,000 litres of liquefied petroleum gas, overturned in the densely populated area, causing widespread destruction. Residents described scenes of chaos as the explosion triggered fireballs and thick plumes of smoke, forcing nearby neighbourhoods to be evacuated. Authorities have cited speeding as a potential factor, while the transport company, Transportador Silza, faces scrutiny over insurance coverage and regulatory compliance.

Hospitals in Mexico City were quickly overwhelmed by the influx of patients, highlighting the challenges of responding to industrial accidents in urban areas. First responders praised their teams’ efforts in preventing an even greater disaster, but survivors reported harrowing burns and trauma, underscoring the risks faced by communities near major transport routes.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about safety protocols and regulations in transporting hazardous materials across Mexico. Experts warn that densely populated areas could remain vulnerable to similar tragedies without stricter enforcement. The blast has also drawn international attention, reflecting growing concerns about industrial safety standards in urban centres.

The crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left over a dozen others injured.

The incident occurred when the vessel, with a 147-foot (45-metre) mast, attempted to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The ship’s masts exceeded the clearance of the arched structure, causing them to break upon impact. The damaged vessel was later seen near the Manhattan Bridge with all three of its masts down.

“We were saying goodbye to all the guys who were already leaving, the boat had already left, a few seconds after it had left the dock where it was, suddenly we saw all the lights crashing, hitting the bridge and then everyone fell down,” an eyewitness told AFP.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams provided further details in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. He disclosed that the Cuauhtémoc “lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.”

He added that among the 277 people on board, 19 were injured, two remained in critical condition, and two others had died as a result of their injuries.

However, the Mexican Navy also reported that 22 individuals aboard the vessel sustained injuries. Of those, 19 were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment, including three in serious condition.

Mayor Adams noted that the Brooklyn Bridge did not sustain any structural damage and has since reopened to the public.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams traveled to the Dominican Republic to honor the victims of the recent nightclub roof collapse in Santo Domingo, where over 200 individuals lost their lives. This visit highlights the significant connection between New York City and its Dominican community, which comprises approximately 700,000 residents, accounting for 8% of the city's total population.

Upon his arrival, Mayor Adams met with local authorities and law enforcement officials before visiting the site of the Jet Set nightclub, where the tragic incident occurred during a concert on April 7. He was received by Victor D’Aza, president of the Dominican Municipal League, who stressed the urgent need for enhanced supervision and adherence to construction regulations.

Rescue efforts successfully saved 189 individuals, with 12 remaining hospitalized, including three in critical condition. The number of confirmed victims rose from 226 to 231, as reported by Interior Minister Faride Raful. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is currently underway.

Victor D’Aza remarked, "This has to be a lesson for more effective supervision, for rigor in compliance with the rules. This is a wake-up call," underscoring the need for regulatory reforms. To further pay his respects, Mayor Adams is scheduled to attend a Mass in the evening. His visit occurs as he prepares for re-election in the wake of a bribery controversy and scrutiny from Democratic supporters regarding his associations with Republican President Donald Trump .

Most dangerous countries for driving: WHO highlights global road fatality crisis

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that 1 .19 million people die each year in road traffic accidents , making it the leading cause of death for people aged 5 to 29. Tragically, over half of these fatalities involve vulnerable road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists—especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Guinea has been identified as the most dangerous country for driving, with an estimated 37.4 road deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. This frightening statistic is a grim reminder of the critical and often overlooked global road safety crisis.

Trailing close behind Guinea are Libya (34.0), Kenya (28.2), and Thailand (25.4)—nations struggling with a complex mix of inadequate infrastructure, lax enforcement of traffic laws, and dangerous driving practices.

Why are the numbers so high?

Guinea, topping the chart, faces deep-rooted challenges in road infrastructure. Poorly maintained roads, minimal signage, and a lack of reliable public transportation force citizens onto overcrowded and unsafe roads. In 2022, a horrific bus collision near Kouroussa claimed over 20 lives, drawing attention to the need for stricter regulations and better emergency response systems.

In Libya, ongoing conflict and political instability have left the country’s infrastructure in disrepair. Many vehicles are outdated, and traffic enforcement is minimal. A 2023 crash near Benghazi involving multiple cars killed 15 people, many of them children on their way to school.

Kenya has rapidly increased road usage, yet enforcement and road safety awareness lag. In one tragic incident in December 2023, a bus traveling from Nairobi to Kisumu collided with a truck, leaving 21 dead and dozens injured.

One of the notable deaths from road crashes is that of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum , who died in February 2024 on his way to his hometown in Kenya.

Thailand, despite its modern infrastructure in urban areas, struggles with motorbike-related fatalities. With millions of motorcycles on the roads, many without helmets or licenses, the country sees an alarming number of daily road deaths—particularly during festive periods like Songkran, where accident rates spike.

Developing countries hit hardest

Interestingly, while countries like the USA (14.2) and Russia (10.6) also appear on the list, their road safety records are considerably better than those of developing nations. This is largely due to stronger enforcement of seatbelt laws, better vehicle safety standards, and emergency response capabilities.

However, in the USA, distracted driving —especially involving smartphones—and high-speed freeway accidents remain critical issues. In 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported over 42,000 fatalities, many involving young drivers or alcohol impairment.

Zimbabwe Roundup: Resignation of President Mnangagwa, resurgence of HIV, bus-truck collision

Resignation of President Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe is currently in the throes of political upheaval as war veterans have openly demanded the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. With apprehensions about his potential rule extending beyond constitutional limits, war veteran leader Blessed Geza has articulated intentions for a nationwide shutdown aimed at compelling Mnangagwa to resign. Geza also faces looming arresUt due to his confrontational stance against the president, for which authorities are actively searching him on multiple charges, including inciting violence.

Resurgence of HIV

Zimbabwe is experiencing a resurgence of HIV, influenced by the withdrawal of mobile health clinics which previously provided critical services like antiretroviral drugs, condoms, and testing. This cessation followed the suspension of U.S. foreign aid on January 20, leaving many, particularly vulnerable groups such as sex workers, without necessary healthcare access. With approximately 1.3 million individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe, the fallout from the aid suspension poses significant health risks as condom supplies decrease.

De-dollarisation

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has signalled that Zimbabwe is not positioned to initiate de-dollarisation until it restructures its outstanding $21 billion debt, essential for regaining access to international credit. Since defaulting in 1999, Zimbabwe has faced exclusion from capital markets, with potential debt restructuring promising necessary support for balance of payments. The introduction of the new ZiG currency has stumbled, marked by a significant 43% devaluation in September, inciting calls for its reconsideration; the central bank has allocated over $400 million in support measures while tightening liquidity.

Bus-truck collision

A tragic vehicle collision occurred in Matabeleland South Province on February 13, 2025, claiming at least 24 lives. The incident involved a bus and a haulage truck, leading to seventeen fatalities at the scene and seven additional deaths in hospital care, with twelve individuals remaining in critical condition. Eyewitnesses indicated that the bus was en route to Beitbridge, near the South African border, while the truck was transporting a substantial cargo of 34 metric tons of magnesium. The police have confirmed the event and pledged to release more comprehensive details.

Longstanding debt

Zimbabwe's longstanding debt crisis poses a critical issue, with more than $21 billion accumulated over 25 years, largely stemming from unpaid obligations. The country has been in default to significant creditors, most notably the World Bank and the IMF, since 2000, a situation exacerbated by severe drought conditions adversely impacting the agricultural sector.

Under the new rule, informants will receive 10% of the fine issued for a verified traffic violation. Officials say the identity of informants will remain private to protect their safety.

This comes as the government significantly increased fines for breaking traffic rules in a bid to improve safety on Vietnam’s busy and chaotic roads.

For example, running a red light with a motorbike now costs over six million dong, compared to one million dong before. Car drivers who commit the same offence face fines of nearly 20 million ($800) dong, up from six million dong.

Using a mobile phone while driving also carries much higher penalties, with fines more than doubling.

The stricter penalties come as road safety remains a serious issue in Vietnam.

Official data shows the country has 77 million motorbikes and 6.3 million cars on its roads. In 2024, road accidents claimed 30 lives every day.

Traffic in major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City remains slow and disorderly, with drivers often ignoring traffic lights and road signs.

So far, no one has received a reward for reporting a violation, according to state media citing police .

This initiative aims to enhance response times from emergency services on expressways, as highlighted by road safety expert and Arids developer Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua.

Currently, Arids is operational on approximately 1,000km of expressways and federal roads within Klang Valley and Kuching, although its capabilities are not fully utilised in Malaysia.

Other regions, such as Brunei and Xi'an in China, have integrated the Malaysian-developed system to improve road safety.

Dr Law said the potential of Arids through the detection of a significant crash in Johor, where the system alerted authorities minutes before official reports emerged.

"If the crash was detected earlier, rescue response time would have been cut shorter, with better survival rates," he said.

Traditionally, accidents on Malaysian highways are reported through manual means, like CCTV monitoring or direct user notifications. Almost autonomously, Arids employs neural networks to recognise accidents and other traffic anomalies while providing real-time notifications.

In addition to accident detection, Arids monitors traffic conditions and signals, aiding in the analysis of highway infrastructure, such as the need for stronger guardrails to withstand impacts from vehicles.

West Coast Expressway (WCE) CEO Lyndon Alfred Felix highlighted ongoing technological advancements in accident prediction and monitoring systems that identify hazardous driving patterns. To supplement Arids, WCE is enhancing its traffic management systems and exploring predictive technologies to bolster road safety further.

Ethiopia praises Somaliland for peaceful election

Ethiopia has congratulated Somaliland on its recent presidential election, recognising it as peaceful and democratic. The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the Somaliland National Electoral Commission for conducting free and fair elections, making Ethiopia the first country to acknowledge Somaliland's electoral process. International observers also commended the transparency of voter registration and candidate nomination. The election featured incumbent Muse Bihi Abdi and his opponents, with results yet to be declared. Despite this progress, Somaliland faces ongoing tensions with Somalia over an 'illegal' agreement allowing Ethiopia access to the sea for a military base, which Somalia rejects, viewing it as annexation.

Collaboration with UN agencies to launch internal displacement strategy

On November 14, 2024, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), United Nations Developmental Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) launched a Durable Solutions Strategy in Ethiopia to address the growing internal displacement caused by conflict and climate shocks, which is reversing years of poverty reduction. Meeting in Addis Ababa, leaders emphasised the need for development and peacebuilding solutions beyond humanitarian aid. Despite lifting 15 million people out of poverty, the country faces setbacks from crises, resulting in significant needs among displaced people and host communities. The strategy promotes the integration of humanitarian, development, and climate action efforts to ensure comprehensive recovery. The UN calls for increased donor support in line with the UN Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on Internal Displacement. Ethiopia is among 15 countries implementing this strategy, aiming to create conditions for the safe return and integration of displaced individuals while improving access to services and economic opportunities.

Low-carbon development agreement with Russia

Ethiopia and Russia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on low-carbon development during COP29 in Baku, aimed at enhancing cooperation in climate change mitigation and sustainable financing. The MoU, signed by Ethiopian State Minister Seyoum Mekonnen and Russian Deputy Minister Vladimir Ilyichev, establishes a working group to promote best practices in greenhouse gas emissions reduction, conduct joint research, and develop carbon regulation mechanisms. The collaboration aligns with both countries' business interests in achieving climate goals and may facilitate Ethiopia's forthcoming BRICS Memorandum on Carbon Market Partnership.

Military helicopter crash

An Ethiopian military helicopter crashed at Belay Zeleke International Airport in Bahir Dar, northern Ethiopia on Saturday, November 16, raising concerns about the presence of officials onboard. The cause of the crash and any potential casualties remain unknown. Following the incident, all flights to and from Bahir Dar have been suspended. The government has not yet commented on the situation. Defence chief Field Marshal Berhanu Jula had visited Bahir Dar the previous day for a meeting, leading to speculation about the crash's context. Reports indicate multiple helicopters had been operating in the area recently.

Fight against Somalian jihadist group Al-Shabaab

Ethiopia plans to continue its fight against Al-Shabaab in Somalia, emphasising the need to protect national security and past victories against the militant group. Ministry spokesperson Nebiat Getachew highlighted Ethiopia's key role in reducing Al-Shabaab threats in the Horn of Africa. However, relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have deteriorated after Somalia's Defense Minister labelled Ethiopia a "hostile" country, opposing its participation in the upcoming African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission. Somalia has also demanded Ethiopian troop withdrawal by December 2024, citing territorial integrity concerns linked to an agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland. This diplomatic tension raises fears of increased Al-Shabaab activity in the region.

The new regulations, which took effect on November 1, are part of a revised road traffic law aimed at addressing a rise in bicycle-related accidents.

The government reports that some accidents involving cyclists distracted by screens have tragically led to pedestrian fatalities. Although overall traffic accidents in Japan are decreasing, the proportion involving bicycles is on the rise. Riding on the pavement, a common practice in Japan unlike in many other countries, has also raised safety concerns.

In addition to mobile phone restrictions, the new law also cracks down on cycling under the influence of alcohol. Cyclists caught riding drunk could face up to three years in prison or fines reaching 500,000 yen (about $3,267.44). Individuals who serve alcohol to cyclists may face up to two years in prison or a fine of 300,000 yen ($1,960.46).

The urgency of these new rules follows concerning statistics. In 2023, Japan recorded around 72,340 accidents involving cyclists, with over 15,000 cases where the cyclist’s negligence was deemed the most serious fault.

In response to the growing number of bicycle accidents spurred by an increase in cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan's parliament in May passed legislation allowing police to fine cyclists for minor traffic violations.

Zambia chosen as vice-chair of Commonwealth group

At the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, Zambia was elected Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). The initiative aims to monitor breaches in democratic principles among its 56 member nations, with Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe leading these efforts. CMAG, established in 1995, plays a crucial role in championing human rights and constitutional governance. Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland emphasised the significance of CMAG in safeguarding democracy and civil liberties within the Commonwealth community.

Zambian footballers killed in bus crash

Zambia is mourning the loss of seven players from Chavuma Town Council FC in north-western Zambia who perished in a bus accident while en route to a league match. This incident has drawn expressions of deep shock from the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), which is currently liaising with the authorities for further information. In addition to the fatalities, twelve other individuals were injured, five of whom require treatment in Lusaka. Condolences and support for the affected families and the injured have been extended by CAF President Patrice Motsepe and Artur de Almeida e Silva, head of the Southern African Regional Football Associations.

Zambia and Malawi to develop Kenya fuel import strategy

Malawi and Zambia are developing a fuel import strategy inspired by Kenya's procurement model. This strategy permits direct procurement of petroleum products from Gulf producers, bypassing the Open Tender System. A government-to-government agreement, successfully established with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, allows selected Gulf state-owned firms to designate oil marketing companies for distribution in Kenya. Energy officials from Malawi have sought advice from their Kenyan counterparts to devise a similar arrangement. A technical team from Kenya has been appointed to support Malawi in comprehending the deal's framework and the challenges it presents.

Over 800 prisoners pardoned on Independence Day celebration

On the occasion of Zambia’s 60th Independence Day, President Hakainde Hichilema granted pardons to 859 prisoners. This decision included 840 ordinary inmates, along with nine elderly individuals, seven women with children, and three foreign nationals. In his commemoration efforts, Hichilema laid wreaths at the graves of liberation leader Kenneth Kaunda and the Freedom Statue in Lusaka. He engaged in an investiture ceremony and urged citizens to confront pressing national challenges, including climate change, poverty, and corruption.

Zambian president dismisses constitutional court judges

President Hakainde Hichilema made headlines by dismissing three constitutional court judges, which has raised concerns regarding potential judicial interference. This action followed a recommendation by a judicial commission concerning alleged misconduct tied to a 2016 ruling that benefitted his political opponent, Edgar Lungu. Critics, including human rights advocates, have raised alarms about the timing of the dismissals, particularly with the upcoming 2026 elections on the horizon, suggesting a possible motive aligned with Hichilema’s political strategy. While a former vice president has defended the firings as a necessary oversight, Lungu’s legal representative has condemned the action as illegal, insisting that the executive branch should not rectify judicial rulings. Government officials maintain that the president's actions were legally justified, referencing constitutional authority to dismiss judges in response to commission recommendations.

The incident occurred on a highway in Kigogwa, about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of Kampala.

Charles Lwanga, the resident district commissioner, reported that the fuel tanker overturned in a busy area, attracting people who attempted to siphon fuel before the explosion took place.

"The explosion killed at least 10 people, and several others were injured," Lwanga told AFP.

Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby petrol station. "Investigations are underway. Rescue and emergencies are on the scene and the fire prevention service from the police have controlled the fire," Lwanga added.

The explosion occurred around 3 PM local time (1200 GMT), as confirmed by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango.

This tragic incident follows a recent fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria on October 15 that claimed over 170 lives. Uganda has seen similar tragedies in the past, including a 2019 explosion in Kyambura that killed 19 people and a 2002 accident that resulted in 70 fatalities when an oil truck collided with a bus near Rutoto.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the latest disaster as the community mourns the lives lost.

Tunisia Roundup: Political arrests, migrant maltreatment, drought

Fog causes road crash

On October 16, a tragic collision in Sidi Bouzid Province, Tunisia, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others. The accident, occurring in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, was attributed to hazardous conditions due to dense fog. Notably, Tunisia has been grappling with a severe traffic safety crisis, recording over 4,100 accidents this year, leading to nearly 900 fatalities, reports Social News XYZ .

Drought

In Southern Africa, a historic drought persists, impacting an estimated 6.5 million people. This environmental crisis is linked to the previous year's El Niño phenomenon. The Mirage reports that the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has highlighted that 27 million individuals across nations such as Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are affected. With the lean season forecasted to peak in January, the WFP has requested $369 million in aid, but only 20% of this amount has been secured thus far.

Political arrests

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has called on the Tunisian government to uphold democratic principles following a stringent crackdown on opposition leaders and activists as the country approached its presidential elections. According to Arab News , concerns surrounding the lack of due process are exacerbated by the arrest of over 100 political figures and the implementation of restrictive laws limiting electoral dispute resolutions. The UN has also raised alarms over Tunisia's recent presidential election, which saw a remarkably low voter turnout and allegations of process manipulation by President Kais Saied, who secured re-election with a striking 90.69% of the vote.

Migrant maltreatment

UN experts have raised alarms over the treatment of migrants, refugees, and human trafficking victims in Tunisia, citing severe human rights violations during rescue operations at sea, including physical violence and capsizing incidents. The reported death toll of 189 migrants during attempted crossings from January to July reflects a disturbing trend, exacerbated by arbitrary detentions, particularly at Tunisia's borders with Algeria and Libya. As reported by Arab News , survivors often encounter dire conditions upon disembarkation, facing further risks from border guards. Alarmingly, an increase in human trafficking and sexual exploitation, particularly of young girls, signals a critical humanitarian crisis, amidst ongoing European support for Tunisia's immigration management.

Calls to uphold rule of law

Volker Türk has expressed profound concerns regarding the treatment of candidates during the presidential campaign, where over 100 figures faced arrests and only a fraction were accepted by the elections authority. The UN chief highlighted the absence of due process in trials and the inability to reinstate excluded candidates, reiterating the pressing need for Tunisia to recommit to transitional justice and implement rule of law reforms, reports UN .

The victims were returning from a school trip when their bus blew a tire, crashed into a highway barrier just north of Bangkok, and caught fire.

Families gathered at the school in Uthai Thani province, where the children studied. As a marching band played in the rain, royal palace staff carried the coffins on traditional funerary carriages, while parents dressed in black placed portraits and toys beside them.

“I hoped it wasn't my son,” said Wichan Suebsaichan, father of nine-year-old Reutthawat, who dreamed of being a football player.

“Now the house just seems too quiet. I can't handle it. May he rest in peace," Bantima Tuadchampa, who lost her six-year-old grandson was quoted by AFP.

Monks chanted as the 23 caskets were placed in individual cremation furnaces, ending a week of ceremonies. About 5,000 people attended the mass cremation, including community members and government officials.

In the wake of the tragedy, Thai police arrested the bus driver, Samarn Chanput, 48, who faces charges including reckless driving causing death. The incident has raised public concern about vehicle safety, prompting the transport ministry to recall over 13,000 gas-fueled buses for checks.

Uganda stabilises debt

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has declared Uganda's debt to be sustainable, highlighting a stable political and economic context, The Monitor reports. Despite challenges like high public debt interest rates and low private credit, ongoing fiscal consolidation positions Uganda favourably for development. Inflation, which peaked in 2022/2023, has been effectively brought down, supported by the Bank of Uganda's tight monetary policy. The financial sector remains stable but has concerns regarding the sovereign-bank relationship. The IMF's Article Four consultation noted that Uganda's public debt ratio is just above 50% of GDP, and it emphasized the need for sound macroeconomic management and improved tax administration. Uganda is under the leadership of President Museveni, who has held power since 1986, with elections scheduled for January 2026.

 Visa-free travel

Uganda and Mozambique are in negotiations to establish visa-free travel for their citizens as part of efforts to enhance regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Mozambique has proposed allowing Ugandans to enter without a visa, especially for holders of diplomatic, official, and honorary passports. If approved, this would eliminate the current visa fee of $50 for Mozambicans traveling to Uganda. According to News Central , the agreement aims to strengthen bilateral relations and boost trade, and discussions also involve political, security, and economic collaborations.

Deaths from road accidents

In Uganda, 239 schoolchildren aged 5 to 18 have been killed in road accidents within the past nine months, according to police. The fatalities occurred primarily during school drop-offs and pickups as the new school term began. Authorities emphasised the shared responsibility of parents, teachers, and motorists for ensuring children's safety on the roads, Pune reports. With around 20,000 annual road accidents resulting in over 2,000 deaths nationwide, officials urge increased vigilance, especially when transporting young children on motorcycles.

Citizens urged to participate in budget processes

Uganda's Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has emphasised the importance of increased citizen participation in budget processes during the 7th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices (An-PBO) Conference. She highlighted that citizen involvement enhances transparency and accountability in governance and budgeting, citing Zimbabwe's pre-budget conferences as a model. According to Zaywa , Among called for better financial and technical support for parliamentary budget offices to improve their effectiveness. The conference is a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among African parliamentary budget offices, focusing on enhancing fiscal oversight and public finance management. Among was also named patron of the An-PBO.

Uganda launches airline

Uganda Airlines has launched direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with the inaugural flight landing on September 12, 2024. African Tourism and Travel Association reports that the new route, operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, is aimed at enhancing economic and social ties between Uganda and Nigeria, becoming Uganda Airlines' 14th destination. The launch coincided with the 4th Nigeria-Uganda Trade and Business Forum, where stakeholders explored trade opportunities. Ugandan officials emphasized the route's potential to boost trade, tourism, and investment while reducing travel time and costs for business travellers, aligning with Uganda's goal of improving intra-African trade.

The seven-storey structure, which housed several families, began to show signs of instability before it ultimately gave way between 11 am and 12 pm GMT on Monday, September 16.

Emergency services responded swiftly, but the extent of the damage made rescue efforts exceedingly challenging. Despite their best efforts, eight lives were lost, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.

Many residents expressed their grief and frustration over the tragedy. Safiatu Kargbo, a relative of six trapped victims, shared her harrowing experience:

"I was on public transport going to central Freetown when my friends told me to check social media. My mother informed me that some members of our family, my uncle and cousins, were under the rubble after a building collapse. I cancelled my journey and rushed to the scene. My uncle told me six of his children were trapped under the rubble. When we called their phone, they responded that they were under the veranda when the building collapsed."

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) released a statement confirming the tragic toll:

"Thus far, six survivors have been rescued from the rubble, while eight victims have been confirmed dead."

The victims included three men, two women, two girls under five, and a boy under five, according to AFP.

Local authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse. Preliminary reports suggest that poor construction practices and lack of proper maintenance may have significantly contributed to the disaster.

According to Do Thi Hoa, a peach blossom farmer, all her hard work for the year has been futile because she cannot make profits off submerged crops.

"There is a lot of damage. The branches hit each other and broke. After the rain, there was flooding. The river rose, submerged everything, and the trees died. During the storm, we propped the trees back up. The next day, they were flooded again. This year, it's a total loss. No harvest," she said.

Do Thi Hoa, further counting her losses shared with AFP "It’s heartbreaking because I’ve put in so much effort since the beginning of the year. Money for pesticides and labour. So much money was spent with the hope of a harvest by the end of the year. Now, with this loss, everyone in the village is worried. "

Beyond the destruction of the farms, the human cost of Typhoon Yagi is equally tragic. As of Friday, September 13, 233 people have been reported dead with many more injured or missing.

T20 World Cup

South Africa narrowly defeated Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup, with Bangladesh chasing 114 runs. Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah nearly secured the win, but South Africa's Aiden Markram made a crucial catch. According to the Independent , both teams fought back from poor starts, with Heinrich Klaasen top-scoring for South Africa and Kagiso Rabada removing Hridoy. Ultimately, Bangladesh fell short as South Africa held on for the victory.

Ramaphosa condemns flag-burning ad

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has labelled the opposition party's campaign ad depicting the burning flag as 'treasonous.' The ad warns of the ruling ANC forming a coalition with left-wing parties. According to Reuters , the upcoming election is hotly contested, with polls suggesting ANC may lose majority for the first time in 30 years. The opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, however, stands by the ad, calling for unity to rescue South Africa. ANC has also dismissed the need for a coalition as it is confident of winning the election.

South Africa to head G20 in 2025

South Africa will be president of the G20 in 2025. It plans to drive reforms in global economic governance, particularly focusing on IMF reform and the relationship between international organisations and their member states. The Conversation further reports that the country also aims to commission studies on these issues and how to divide responsibility between states and institutions. These initiatives aim to make the IMF more responsive to the needs and priorities of all member states and their citizens.

Building collapse claims 10 lives

Dozens of construction workers are still missing in the rubble of a collapsed building in South Africa, with 7 confirmed dead and 16 in critical condition. The incident occurred on Monday, May 6 and has witnessed rescue efforts which have brought in specialists from other areas. As reported by News4Jax , the search is expected to last until Friday, May 10. Multiple investigations into the cause of the collapse are also underway.

Online witchdoctors lure South African Christians

Young Black South African Christians are turning to online sangomas, or traditional healers, to connect with their ancestral roots through social media. This has sparked concerns among church leaders about syncretism and internet scams. Christianity Today expands that while some churches welcome the practice, others see it as incompatible with Christianity. They also warn of the risks of mixing traditional African spiritualism with the Christian faith.

Political arrests

According to an exclusive report by Adriaan Basson and Jeff Wicks on News24 , Bradley Conradie and Sarah Burger, prominent figures in the anti-corruption efforts at the University of Fort Hare under Vice-Chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu, have levelled sharp criticism at Police Minister Bheki Cele and the African National Congress (ANC). They accuse them of orchestrating politically motivated arrests in April. Conradie and Burger allege that Cele and the police sought to shield Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane, whose involvement in a "fake" degree scandal they had uncovered, and to safeguard the ANC's interests ahead of the May elections. Conradie and Burger, representing BCHC Attorneys and Horizon Forensics, were recruited by Buhlungu in 2017 to tackle corruption within the institution.

Discovery of new piranha species

Biologist Flavio Gallo-Cardozo, inspired by the TV show 'River Monsters,' has made a remarkable discovery in Bolivia's Amazon Basin. His research led to the identification of a new species of piranha , named Serrasalmus magallanesi. “My dream of being able to discover a new species actually began long before my training as a biologist, it began during my time at school when in natural science subjects I saw the great diversity of species that exist, and I always thought that being able to discover a serious something that at the time considered unreal and impossible,” Gallo-Cardozo said. The biologist stated that the fish was compared to current collections from national natural history museums, which included 153 specimens in total.

Bolivarian Youth Games

The 2024 Bolivarian Youth Games are set to commence in Sucre, the capital of the Latin American nation from April 4 – 14 with the inauguration to be officiated by the President of Bolivia Luis Arce. Over 1,500 athletes from seven countries will compete in 27 disciplines, with Bolivian participants striving for a prominent position in the medal table. According to Prensa Latina , Bolivia’s Vice Minister of Sports, Karen Palenque, said that the Bolivian athletes will participate in a host of fields including athletics, swimming, wrestling, and weight lifting among others.

Argentina, Brazil negotiate gas pipeline reversal

Argentina and Brazil are engaged in discussions regarding the reversal of the flow of a Bolivian gas pipeline due to potential shortages. A preliminary proposal has failed to gain traction with Bolivia, leaving Brazil exposed to volatile liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices. Argentina possesses the second largest shale gas reserves in the world, and Brazil has made it clear in recent months that gas from Argentina will be required to balance supplies, according to Reuters . Experts suggest that Bolivia, which was formerly a major producer in the area, may not have any exports available after 2029 due to its sharp fall in exports.

Highway crash kills four

A tragic highway crash in southern Bolivia has claimed the lives of four individuals and left 36 injured. The incident, near Yotala, a small town located 14 kilometres away from Bolivia’s capital Sucre involved a passenger bus and another vehicle. Authorities are investigating the cause, with initial beliefs pointing to the possibility of one of the vehicles crossing into the opposing lane.

Bolivia warns of interference in Venezuela elections Bolivia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned against extreme right-wing organisations that may destabilise the upcoming elections in Venezuela. The Bolivian ministry urged that the United States respect the Venezuelan process and not interfere in its internal affairs, Radio Habana Cuba reports. "We express our concern for the threats and actions of some extreme right-wing organizations that, instead of joining the electoral competition as other opposition organizations decided to do, are in line to destabilize the elections and the Venezuelan political system," they said. According to Radio Habana Cuba, Other organisations and countries have expressed support for the democratic process of the Venezuelan elections, with the Union of Journalism and Communication Workers of Peru expressing support for Venezuelans' participation in the elections.

Train collision

An accident involving two trains at Richards Bay, north of KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal province in South Africa resulted in the loss of tons of coal. The trains collided on January 14 due to a power outage, causing both trains to derail. No serious injuries were reported, and environmental teams are ensuring compliance with recovery and clean-up operations, local media Daily Sun reports.

Police arrested for murder of robber

Four South African policemen were taken into custody for murder following the death of a man who was thought to have robbed one of the police officers, local media The Citizen reports. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in South Africa announced the arrests of the officers on January 15. “The police officers allegedly hunted down the deceased, a civilian, after accusing him of being one of the people who robbed one of the police officers and took him to the Pop building where they allegedly assaulted him… one of the officers fired a shot that hit the deceased,” an IPID spokesperson told reporters.

Missing police firearms

South African national police commissioner Fannie Masemola has revealed that over the past three years, over 1,725 firearms belonging to the South African Police Services (SAPS) have been lost. The police commissioner’s recent revelation comes after an inquiry by the South African parliament in September 2023, local media Cape Time reports. According to Claire Taylor, a researcher for the NGO Gun Free South Africa (GFSA), about 31 people die from gun violence in South Africa. “The easy availability of guns in South Africa has led to an epidemic of gun violence in which 31 people are shot and killed every day in the country,” she is quoted by Cape Times.

Released prisoners

The South African Department of Correctional Services announced that in 2023 over 5,000 prisoners were released on parole and over 2,000 offenders were on probation in Western Cape, a province in the southwestern corner of South Africa. Candice Van-Reenen, a spokesman for correctional services told reporters that as of the first quarter of the 2023–24 fiscal year, the Western Cape had 5,300 parolees and just over 2,300 offenders on probation. This has caused concerns since there aren't enough police officers monitoring parolees, which has made certain communities fearful, Daily Sun reports.

Cholera cases recorded

South Africa’s Department of Health has reported that two laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera imported from Zimbabwe were detected in Limpopo a province in the northern part of South Africa. Department of Health said that the first case was a 43-year-old male patient who tested positive and was subsequently released from the hospital and the second case was a 27-year-old male who travelled to Zimbabwe on December 9, 2023, and returned to South Africa on January 10, 2024. The second patient was admitted to the hospital with a history of vomiting, watery diarrhoea, and stomach cramps that began on January 11, a Department of Health official informed reporters. “His health condition is stable, and he is still in isolation at the hospital. His contacts were identified, and the local outbreak response team has been activated to conduct further investigations and provide health education to contacts,” the official is quoted by The Citizen .

Road traffic injuries remain a leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 5 – 29 years, WHO has reported. In 2019 alone, road traffic accident was the 12 th leading cause of death amongst all age groups.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "The tragic tally of road crash deaths is heading in the right direction, downwards, but nowhere near fast enough…The carnage on our roads is preventable. We call on all countries to put people rather than cars at the centreESTIMATIONVERSES of their transport systems and ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users."

The report shows that 28% of global road traffic deaths occurred in the WHO South-East Asia Region, 25% in the Western Pacific Region, 19% in the African Region, 12% in the Region of the Americas, 11% in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and 5% in the European Region. Nine out of 10 road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where fatalities are disproportionately higher relative to the number of vehicles and roads. The risk of death is three times higher in low-income countries compared to high-income countries, despite low-income countries having only 1% of the world's motor vehicles.

The victims

Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians (23%), riders of powered two and three-wheelers like motorcycles (21%), cyclists (6%), and users of micro-mobility devices such as e-scooters (3%), comprise 53% of all road traffic fatalities. Deaths among car and other 4-wheeled light vehicle occupants slightly decreased to 30% of global fatalities.

The report highlights that the WHO Southeast Asia Region accounted for 28% of global road traffic deaths, followed by the Western Pacific Region at 25%, the African Region at 19%, the Region of the Americas at 12%, the Eastern Mediterranean Region at 11%, and the European Region at 5%.

“Our mission at Bloomberg Philanthropies is to save and improve as many lives as possible, and one of the best ways to do that is to make more of the world’s roads safe for all. For more than a decade now, we’ve made encouraging progress together with the World Health Organization and our partners. Still, as this new report makes clear, road safety demands stronger commitments from governments worldwide – and we’ll continue to urge more leaders to take lifesaving action,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries .

Why the prevalence?

In terms of a legal framework, only six countries have laws that align with WHO best practices for all risk factors, including speeding, drunk driving, and the use of motorcycle helmets, seatbelts, and child restraints.

Further, the research suggests that a staggering 80% of the world's roads do not meet pedestrian safety standards, and a mere 0.2% have designated cycle lanes, leaving these road users vulnerable to danger. Surprisingly, although 9 out of 10 people identify as pedestrians, only a quarter of countries have policies in place to promote walking, cycling, and public transport. It is interesting to note that only 35 countries have legislation on all safety features in vehicles.

The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges that ongoing efforts to enhance road safety have yielded some positive results. However, these advances still fall significantly short of meeting the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 target to reduce road deaths by half by 2030.

The platform of the drilling machine became destabilized while penetrating through rock debris, requiring technicians to address the issue before the rescue operation could proceed.

Initial expectations were to commence the workers' extraction on Thursday, but now the earliest possible start is Friday.

The drilling process was also halted on Wednesday night when the boring machine encountered a metal girder, resulting in damage to its blades. This incident led to a six-hour delay as rescuers worked to cut the metal object and clear the obstruction, according to officials.

Atul Karwal, the head of the state-run National Disaster Response Force, reported that the machine resumed operations on Thursday.

The trapped workers have been stuck since November 12, when a landslide caused a section of the 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) tunnel they were constructing to collapse approximately 200 meters (650 feet) from the entrance.

Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, visited the site on Thursday and communicated with some of the tunnel workers using walkie-talkies, as relayed by Karwal.

As of Thursday evening, the drilling had progressed almost 46 meters (151 feet) and required excavation of an additional 12 meters (40 feet) to establish a passageway, according to Kirti Panwar, a spokesperson for the state government at the accident site.

The rescue strategy involves inserting and welding pipes together to serve as the trapped workers' pathway to freedom. About 46 meters of pipes have been installed thus far, Panwar noted.

The National Disaster Response Force members are anticipated to enter and extract the workers individually, most likely on stretchers equipped with wheels.

Drilling operations recommenced on Wednesday as rescuers resumed their horizontal drilling efforts at the tunnel entrance.

The machine had encountered issues the previous week, leading to a temporary halt in digging, prompting consideration of alternative rescue strategies.

Negotiating the challenging mountainous terrain in Uttarakhand has proven difficult for the drilling machine, resulting in a breakdown as attempts were made to excavate horizontally toward the trapped workers.

Additionally, the machine's high-intensity vibrations contributed to an increased number of debris falling.

The final stretch of drilling resumed after a six-hour delay caused by damage to the blades on the drilling machine from a metal object in the debris.

Atul Karwal, chief of the state-run National Disaster Response Force, stated, "The machine has started operating again in full swing. So we are hopeful that it will finish early." He added, "We should be able to rescue them today."

It took six hours to remove the metal pipes obstructing the drilling. Once the drilling reaches the required depth, rescuers can insert and weld together pipes, providing a route to freedom for the trapped workers.

The workers have been trapped since Nov. 12, following a landslide that caused a section of the 4.5-kilometer tunnel they were constructing to collapse about 200 meters from the entrance.

The challenging mountainous terrain and machine-related problems have posed difficulties for the rescue operation, but authorities remain optimistic about completing the rescue.

Ladan Ayuba, the head of Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency told reporters that over 100 passengers were on board the boat with 14 people rescued and 17 bodies recovered. 73 people were unaccounted for, he added.

Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas, in a statement released on Monday, labelled the accident a "monumental tragedy" and has ordered the mandatory use of life jackets for boat passengers.

The governor emphasized the importance of the region's waterways becoming a source of prosperity rather than a recurring source of death.

Boat accidents frequently occur in isolated areas around Nigeria; in the last four months, there have been three such incidents involving more than 100 passengers.

The majority of these occurrences are linked to overloading, which is made worse by the poor quality and accessibility of the roads in these locations.

Authorities are actively investigating the cause of this accident, with Taraba police spokesperson Usman Abdullahi stating that the challenging river conditions, including high water levels, may extend the rescue operation for several days. Local residents and fishermen have joined the efforts to assist rescue agencies in their search for survivors and victims.
