For millions of people around the world , obtaining a second passport represents security, mobility and long-term opportunity. But while some countries offer relatively clear naturalisation routes, others maintain some of the strictest citizenship laws on the planet.

The difficulty of naturalisation typically depends on several factors, including minimum residency requirements, language proficiency standards, financial thresholds, cultural integration tests and restrictions on dual citizenship.

Some countries are also said to operate highly discretionary systems. Even if applicants technically meet eligibility criteria, final approval may rest with interior ministries or heads of state.

In short, strict timelines, limited approvals and political discretion combine to make certain passports exceptionally difficult to acquire.

The 10 hardest countries to get citizenship

Qatar

Qatar is widely cited as one of the most restrictive citizenship regimes in the world. Under Qatari law, foreigners must generally reside in the country for 25 years before applying, speak Arabic fluently and demonstrate good conduct. Even then, approvals are capped annually and granted at the discretion of authorities. Naturalisation numbers remain extremely low relative to the country’s large expatriate population.

Vatican City

Citizenship in Vatican City is not granted through traditional naturalisation. It is tied to employment or official roles within the Holy See. When a person’s service ends, Vatican citizenship typically ends as well, making it functionally impossible to obtain through standard residency pathways.

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein requires long-term residence, often 30 years, though time spent as a minor may count differently, and approval at both municipal and national levels. According to Global Citizen Solutions, local community votes can influence decisions, making the process highly selective.

Bhutan

Bhutan’s citizenship framework is rooted in strict national identity laws. Applicants must meet lengthy residency requirements, demonstrate cultural assimilation and obtain government approval. The country maintains tight controls over naturalisation to preserve its demographic balance.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi citizenship is difficult to secure without lineage. While the kingdom introduced reforms allowing certain highly skilled professionals to apply, approvals remain rare. Applicants must meet residency, language and background requirements, and the process is highly discretionary.

Kuwait

Kuwait has one of the most restrictive nationality laws globally. Naturalisation is limited and often prioritises specific categories, such as long-standing residents with particular qualifications. Stateless populations in Kuwait highlight how tightly controlled citizenship remains.

Switzerland

Switzerland’s naturalisation process is rigorous and decentralised. Applicants typically need 10 years of residency, must demonstrate integration and language skills, and are assessed at federal, cantonal and municipal levels. Local authorities can reject applications based on community integration criteria.

China

China does not generally recognise dual citizenship and rarely grants naturalisation. According to official Chinese nationality law, applicants must have close relatives who are Chinese nationals or other legitimate reasons for approval, which are narrowly interpreted.

North Korea

Citizenship in North Korea is largely determined by birth and state classification systems. There is no transparent or accessible naturalisation pathway for foreign nationals.

Japan

Japan requires five years of residence for naturalisation, proof of financial stability and renunciation of previous citizenship in most cases. While not impossible, Passportivity notes that Japan’s prohibition on dual nationality and detailed background checks make the process demanding.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Historically, UAE citizenship was almost unattainable for expatriates. In 2021, the government introduced amendments allowing select investors, scientists and professionals to be nominated. However, approval remains invitation-based and tightly controlled.

Through tariffs and sanctions, the global travel industry has only seen an increase. Travellers yearn for culture-rich cities, island escapes and deeply immersive experiences

Drawing on recommendations and destination insights from Rough Guides , alongside reporting from UNWTO, here are seven of the world ’s best places to visit in 2026.

1. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech continues to rank highly in Rough Guides for its intoxicating mix of history, architecture and atmosphere. The city’s UNESCO-listed medina , with its labyrinthine souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa square, remains one of North Africa’s most compelling cultural hubs. Recent investments in boutique riads, contemporary art spaces and restored palaces have added new depth to the “Red City” experience. The Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the revitalised historic quarters underline Marrakech’s blend of tradition and modern creative energy. With Morocco reporting record tourism rebounds in recent years, Marrakech stands out in 2026 as both timeless and newly invigorated.

2. Crete, Greece

Greece consistently ranks among Europe’s most visited countries, according to UN Tourism, and Crete remains one of its most diverse islands. Rough Guides highlights Crete for its layered history, from the Minoan Palace of Knossos to Venetian harbours, and its varied landscapes. The island offers more than beaches. The Samaria Gorge, White Mountains and traditional villages showcase a rugged side that balances the well-known resorts. Culinary tourism is another draw: Cretan cuisine, recognised for its olive oil-rich Mediterranean diet, continues to attract food-focused travellers. In 2026, Crete appeals to visitors seeking both authenticity and comfort without sacrificing either.

3. Bali, Indonesia

Bali’s appeal is enduring. Named regularly by Rough Guides among Asia’s most captivating destinations, the island combines Hindu temple traditions, terraced rice fields and surf beaches with a well-developed tourism infrastructure. Indonesia’s tourism authorities have promoted more sustainable travel across Bali, encouraging visitors to explore beyond hotspots like Kuta and Seminyak. Ubud’s arts scene, Mount Batur’s sunrise treks and the island’s water temples continue to define its spiritual character. As Southeast Asia’s tourism numbers strengthen post-pandemic, Bali remains a top choice for travellers seeking both reflection and adventure in 2026.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Few cities balance ultramodern design and centuries-old tradition like Tokyo. Frequently praised by Rough Guides for its food scene and neighbourhood diversity, the Japanese capital offers everything from Michelin-starred dining to intimate ramen counters. Japan National Tourism Organisation data shows sustained international interest following the country’s reopening to global travel. Tokyo serves as an ideal gateway to explore beyond the city, whether to Mount Fuji, Hakone or the historic temples of Nikko. In 2026, Tokyo’s mix of high-tech efficiency, pop culture and cultural heritage makes it one of the world’s most inviting urban destinations.

5. Rome, Italy

Rome’s appeal hardly needs explaining. With landmarks such as the Colosseum, Vatican City and the Pantheon, many recognised by UNESCO, Italy’s capital consistently appears in Rough Guides’ top European city recommendations. Italy remains among the top five most visited countries globally (UN Tourism), and Rome anchors that draw. Beyond the ancient sites, the city’s neighbourhood trattorias, espresso bars and art-filled churches keep visitors returning. As Italy prepares for major religious and cultural events in the coming years, Rome is expected to see sustained international interest through 2026.

6. Istanbul, Turkey

Straddling Europe and Asia, Istanbul remains one of the world’s great crossroads. Rough Guides frequently highlights its architectural grandeur, from the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque to the Grand Bazaar. Turkey has invested heavily in museum expansions and cultural restoration projects in recent years, enhancing Istanbul’s appeal to heritage travellers. According to official Turkish tourism data, the country has seen strong visitor growth, reinforcing its global standing. For travellers in 2026, Istanbul offers layered history, contemporary art districts and a food culture that bridges continents.

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s rise over the past decade has been notable. Portugal consistently ranks highly in European tourism satisfaction surveys, and Rough Guides praises Lisbon for its walkable neighbourhoods, historic trams and Atlantic light. The city’s culinary scene, from traditional bacalhau dishes to modern seafood restaurants, has gained international recognition. Meanwhile, nearby Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the beaches of Cascais expand its appeal. As sustainable urban tourism becomes more important in 2026, Lisbon’s manageable scale and cultural richness position it as one of Europe’s most attractive capitals.

At the end of a Council of Ministers meeting on January 29, 2026, the government approved a draft decree authorising an increase in the state’s participation in the airline’s share capital, formally making Air Burkina a state-owned company.

Authorities said the airline has faced serious financial and operational difficulties for several years, which have weakened its ability to function and damaged its financial position.

To address the crisis, the Burkinabe state has launched a restructuring process aimed at restoring the company’s long-term viability.

As part of that effort, on September 24, 2024, the government acquired all shares held by a private investor, 111 shares representing 1% of Air Burkina’s capital. That transaction made the state the airline’s sole shareholder.

The decree adopted this week is intended to legally formalise the acquisition and regularise the state’s full ownership in line with Burkina Faso’s laws governing public capital companies.

The government described the decision as a key step in reviving the national carrier and strengthening Burkina Faso’s air transport sector.

Ethiopia and Rwanda are redefining Africa’s air travel future with two major airport projects

On one side, Ethiopia is building what could become the largest airport in African history, a massive new hub designed to take pressure off Addis Ababa’s fast-growing air traffic. On the other hand, Rwanda is developing a modern international gateway aimed at strengthening its position in East African aviation, backed by a major global airline partner.

Together, these two projects are set to reshape how Africa connects within itself — and with the rest of the world.

Ethiopia’s Bishoftu is a mega hub in the making

Construction has officially begun on Bishoftu International Airport, a project aimed at addressing a significant issue: Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is expected to reach its capacity limit within two to three years.

Instead of trying to squeeze more out of an airport nearing its operational ceiling, Ethiopia is building a whole new one.

Bishoftu is being developed about 40–45 km southeast of Addis Ababa, and it’s not just an airport — it’s a full-blown $12.5 billion) “Airport City” project and everything about it is huge.

A scale Africa hasn’t seen before

The biggest headline is capacity. Bishoftu is designed to handle 110 million passengers annually, which is far beyond what any airport on the continent currently manages.

To put that in perspective, Africa’s busiest airport right now is O.R. Tambo International Airport in South Africa , and it handles over 20 million passengers. Bishoftu’s planned capacity completely changes the scale of what “Africa’s biggest airport” even means.

Built like a global transit powerhouse

The infrastructure is equally ambitious. The plan includes:

That aircraft parking capacity is more than quadruple what the existing Bole hub can handle.

The development includes a 38 km high-speed railway that will connect Bishoftu to Addis Ababa in just 25 minutes — a big deal for an airport located outside the capital.

Rwanda’s Bugesera is smaller, but very strategic

While Ethiopia is going for a continent-changing mega hub, Rwanda’s approach is different: high-standard growth with a clear strategic focus.

Rwanda is developing Bugesera International Airport , valued at about $2 billion, through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and Qatar Airways, which holds a 60% stake.

That partnership signals just how seriously Rwanda is treating this project — not only as national infrastructure, but as a major aviation investment.

Built to grow in phases

Bugesera is being developed with a step-by-step plan:

It’s not trying to be the biggest in the world — but it’s clearly being built to scale up over time.

Designed to strengthen Rwanda’s regional role

Bugesera is also tied directly to Rwanda’s aviation ambitions.

The airport is expected to boost RwandAir, Rwanda’s state carrier, supporting its expansion into new markets — including the USA and various African nations.

In other words, the airport isn’t just a new building. It’s meant to help Rwanda compete harder in international aviation.

Africa’s aviation hierarchy

Currently, the largest airports in Africa are led by O.R. Tambo (South Africa), Cairo International (Egypt), with roughly 17 million passengers, and Addis Ababa Bole (Ethiopia) with approximately 12 to 25 million passengers.

The new projects in Ethiopia and Rwanda will stand out by significantly raising the ceiling for African aviation.

The world’s strongest passports in 2026

A passport is more than a travel document. For millions of people , it quietly shapes the opportunity of where they can work, study, invest, or even dream of going next. Some passports open doors almost everywhere. Others come with long visa queues and paperwork.

According to the Henley Passport Index 2026 , which ranks passports based on the number of destinations holders can access without a prior visa, a small group of countries now dominate global mobility, each leading their respective continents.

Asia

Singapore holds the title of the strongest passport globally in 2026. Singaporean passport holders can travel visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access to 192 destinations, the highest number recorded in the index.

This position reflects Singapore’s long-standing diplomatic reach, stable governance, and strong bilateral agreements. Henley & Partners notes that Asian countries have consistently expanded travel access over the past decade through targeted diplomacy and economic openness.

Europe

Europe continues to dominate the top tier. Five European countries: Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland share the title of Europe’s strongest passports, each offering visa-free access to 186 destinations.

The strength of European passports is closely linked to the Schengen Area, strong regional cooperation, and extensive reciprocal agreements with countries across the Americas, Asia, and Africa. According to Henley Passport Index data, Europe remains the continent with the largest concentration of high-ranking passports.

North America

In North America, Canada holds the strongest passport, with access to 181 countries without a prior visa.

Canada’s passport strength reflects its stable international relationships, low overstay risk, and strong standing in global diplomacy. While the United States remains highly ranked, Canada edges ahead in 2026 in terms of total visa-free destinations.

Oceania

New Zealand leads Oceania with a passport that allows visa-free travel to 183 destinations.

New Zealand’s strong ranking is driven by its reputation for political stability, low migration risk, and trusted border management. Henley data shows that New Zealand has steadily climbed the rankings over the last decade, often outperforming larger economies.

South America

In South America, Chile holds the strongest passport, granting access to 175 destinations.

Chile stands out for its extensive travel agreements with Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as its participation in regional blocs. It remains one of only a few South American countries with visa-free access to the United States’ ESTA system and parts of Asia.

Africa

On the African continent, Seychelles ranks highest, with visa-free access to 154 destinations.

Despite its small population, Seychelles benefits from an outward-looking foreign policy and strong tourism-driven diplomacy. Henley Passport Index data shows that Seychelles consistently outperforms much larger African economies in travel freedom.

Cities with the most 5-star hotels around the world

Luxury travel is no longer defined only by breathtaking beaches or historic landmarks but increasingly measured by how many five-star hotels a city can sustain.

This shift is largely driven by the way travellers now document their journeys and surroundings, where visually striking, well-curated content attracts more clicks, holds attention longer, and ultimately generates higher engagement.

According to Aviation A2Z , Istanbul and Shanghai jointly top the list, each boasting 201 five-star hotels, followed closely by Bangkok (200). London (162) and Dubai (133) round out the top five, reaffirming their long-standing reputations as global luxury and business hubs. Other notable cities include Manila (127), Paris (116), Beijing (112), Mexico City (88), and Batumi (86).

The dominance of Istanbul and Shanghai reflects a broader shift in global tourism flows. Istanbul benefits from its unique position straddling Europe and Asia, acting as a cultural, financial, and aviation crossroads. Shanghai, meanwhile, continues to capitalise on China’s massive domestic travel market and its role as a global business gateway.

Bangkok’s near-tie highlights Southeast Asia ’s strength as a luxury yet affordable destination, attracting long-haul tourists, digital nomads, and premium airline traffic.

Aviation plays a crucial role in this growth. According to Aviation A2Z, cities that function as major airline hubs, such as Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Dubai (Emirates), London (multiple global carriers), and Bangkok, naturally attract more five-star hotel investment due to consistent premium passenger volumes and strong international connectivity.

The cities with the most five-star hotels are not just tourist magnets but are also indicators of where global business, aviation connectivity, and disposable income converge.

As geopolitical shifts, airline route expansions, and visa liberalisation continue to reshape travel patterns, emerging cities like Batumi and Manila signal that luxury hospitality is expanding beyond traditional Western strongholds.

Why airlines will soon stop some passengers from flying to Singapore

From January 2026, major carriers including Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and AirAsia will begin implementing a new “no-boarding directive”, under which passengers flagged as ineligible for entry will be barred from boarding flights to Singapore. More airlines are expected to join the scheme from March.

The move follows figures from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) showing that about 41,800 foreigners were turned away at Singapore’s checkpoints in the first 11 months of 2025. That is nearly 26% more than the total for all of 2024, and 46% higher than in 2023.

Under the new system, airlines will work with Singapore authorities to identify high-risk or prohibited travellers before they depart. These include people with criminal records, those using forged documents or multiple identities, and individuals banned from entering Singapore.

ICA said it has already strengthened checks at its borders using automated lanes with forgery detection, biometric screening and data analytics. These tools allow officers to spot impersonation attempts and other security risks more quickly.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Joe Tan said advance passenger information and analytics are also used to flag travellers for closer scrutiny even before they arrive.

“We do not deny travellers entry simply because they are identified as high-risk upstream,” he said. “They are stopped for further checks, interviews and investigations to determine their eligibility."

The new directive pushes these checks even further upstream, preventing certain travellers from flying to Singapore at all. Authorities say this will reduce congestion at checkpoints and improve overall security.

Similar systems are already used in countries such as the United States and Australia. In the US, airlines screen passengers against a federal watch list, while Australia uses its Movement Alert List to flag people of interest before travel.

In 1970, only about 310 million people flew each year. Today, that figure has exploded into the billions and by 2053, it may more than double again.

According to ACI World and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), global passenger traffic reached 9.5 billion travellers in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and marking one of the fastest recoveries in transport history.

This aligns closely with long-term projections from ACI World, which estimates that air travel could climb to 22.3 billion passengers by 2053.

Global air passengers rose from roughly 1.2 billion in 1990 to 2.6 billion in 2010, then to 4.6 billion by 2019. The only major drop came during the pandemic, and even that downturn proved temporary as demand rebounded sharply .

The fastest growth is coming from Asia and the Middle East. ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira noted in the organisation’s forecast release that “Asia-Pacific will account for more than half of global passenger traffic growth in the next 30 years.”

This is already visible in real-world trends such as India’s rise as one of the world’s busiest domestic aviation markets and China’s rapid recovery, where domestic traffic exceeded 2019 levels earlier than many analysts anticipated.

ACI has warned that without significant investment, many major airports will struggle to manage the rising volumes.

Heathrow in London has repeatedly acknowledged that it is operating at near-capacity during peak seasons, and Manila’s main airport has become so overwhelmed that the Philippines has approved a major expansion plan to relieve congestion.

A Predictive Mobility study shows that a 10% reduction in ticket prices could raise demand from 22.3 million to over 30 million passengers annually. However, currently, taxes account for 25 - 30% of airfares, with passengers on the Entebbe - Nairobi route paying up to $100 in levies on return tickets costing between $300 and $350. Departure taxes also vary widely across the region, from $77.5 in Kinshasa to $31 in Addis Ababa. Central and West Africa have more favourable regimes, with average savings of $12.68 and $10.12 per passenger, respectively, according to the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).

Analysts say the high charges make African carriers less competitive than foreign airlines operating from regions with lower taxation . East African officials are now pushing for reforms. Andrea Aguer Ariik, EAC Deputy Secretary General, has urged member states to fast-track the signing of EAC Air Transport Market Liberalisation Regulations, which would open up regional skies under a multilateral framework.

“Once adopted by the SC-TCM and thereafter signed and ratified by the partner States, the air transport market in the EAC will be fully liberalised. Partner states will subsequently negotiate their regional air transport bilateral arrangements under the Multilateral Air Services Agreement,” said Ariik during the 19th Meeting of Directors General of Civil Aviation and Airports Authorities.

Aircraft accident

Ghana’s Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), John Mmeb Kunyan Wumborti, has reassured the public that the country’s airspace remains the safest in Africa despite the recent military helicopter crash near Obuasi, citing the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) 89% safety rating for Ghana’s aviation sector and stressing that strict protocols by agencies such as the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority continue to guarantee passengers a “99.99% chance” of safe travel.

2028 presidential election

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that he will not contest the 2028 presidential election, noting that his mandate under the 1992 Constitution ends on January 7, 2029. He emphasised that his ineligibility to run again provides him with the independence to enforce strict fiscal discipline in the lead-up to the polls. The President’s remarks also addressed opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) claims suggesting he might seek a third term, stressing that such a move would be unconstitutional under Ghana’s two-term presidential limit.

Helicopter Crash

The Presidency has revealed that a total of GH₵3,576,600 and US$20,000 has been donated to support the children of victims of the August 6 helicopter crash. In a statement issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, said the contributions came from 14 individuals and organisations between August 19 and 28. Among the donors are Ghana Airport Ltd, ARB Apex Bank PLC, STL Foundation, Olam Agric, Fidelity Bank Ghana, ADB Bank, GLICO General Insurance, the National Insurance Commission, as well as private individuals, including Kennedy Hedoe, Peter Adongo, Mensah Michael, Appaul Wiredu Lateef, Samuel Hodalor, and Dauda Iddi.

Debt crisis

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has renewed calls for a fairer global approach to Africa’s mounting debt crisis, which has now exceeded US$1.3 trillion. Speaking in Accra after receiving a petition from the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana, Dr. Forson admitted the gravity of the challenge but emphasised that rejecting debt repayment outright is not an option. He argued that Africa instead needs a more sustainable debt framework that takes into account the realities of distressed economies such as Ghana, while ensuring that fiscal responsibility remains intact.

Special-purpose vehicle

The Ghana Chamber of Mines is urging the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to secure funding for the development of the Western Corridor railway line, a project seen as vital for boosting the mining industry and driving broader economic growth. According to the Chamber’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ahmed Nantogmah, who made the appeal during a visit by Parliament’s Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources to the Ghana Manganese Company, a dedicated financing mechanism is urgently needed to revamp the rail network that serves the western enclave, home to major mineral operations such as GMC.

The framework, announced by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is expected to help integrate next-generation flying vehicles into the country’s transport system.

The move comes as the UAE pushes ahead with advanced air mobility, following recent test flights by U.S.-based firms Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

These trials are part of a wider plan to begin commercial electric air taxi services as early as next year.

Under the new rules, both traditional helicopters and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will be able to use the same landing infrastructure .

Officials say this dual-use approach will help the country scale up its air taxi services more easily.

Speaking about the framework, GCAA director general Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said , “This pioneering regulatory framework does not merely enable new technology; it redefines how aviation evolves.”

The UAE aims to stay ahead in the aviation industry by adopting flexible regulations that support new technologies while maintaining safety standards.

The guidelines also reflect the country’s ambition to become a global leader in sustainable transport.

The e-gates will be installed at Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports and are expected to be in place within two years.

Officials say the system will allow travellers to pass through immigration more quickly without having to speak directly to border staff.

The gates will use digital technology , including facial recognition and fingerprint scans, to check passengers' documents and identities.

The Pakistan Airports Authority said the project is part of a broader push to bring the country’s airports up to international standards. About 100 gates will be set up, and the project has been developed in partnership with the German firm M2P Consulting.

German experts working on the design also conducted a workshop in Karachi and met with local stakeholders, including Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency.

Speaking to The Express Tribune , Additional Director of Engineering Services Adnan Ahmed said the plan is to deliver a secure and efficient solution that eases pressure on immigration officers while improving security.

The self-service system is expected to benefit both passengers and staff, offering a faster and smoother travel experience.

The upgrade comes amid efforts to expand Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and improve services for growing numbers of international travellers.

The announcement was made by Khalil bin Salmah, the country’s Deputy Minister of Industry for Industrial Affairs, during an industry forum in Dhahran on June 23.

He said aircraft manufacturing will be the next step following recent progress in the automotive industry, and that the National Industrial Strategy is built on linking sectors such as petrochemicals, car production, and now aviation.

The government has invested around $8.3 billion in industrial infrastructure, which officials say could generate returns up to eight times that amount.

In total, over 1,900 industrial projects are currently underway in the kingdom, with combined investments valued at $101 billion.

A new industrial city focused on aircraft maintenance has already been launched, covering more than one million square metres.

Several companies have also received their first-ever licences to operate in the aviation manufacturing sector, according to the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources.

Officials say manufacturing will play a major role in achieving up to 40 percent of the goals set out in Saudi Arabia’s National Industrial Strategy.

The plan is part of the country’s wider efforts to diversify its economy away from oil and build a strong, self-sustaining industrial base.

The move is meant to keep international travel, tourism, and trade running smoothly while the government works to address safety concerns raised by the EU.

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) announced that international carriers such as Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways have been given extra rights to operate flights to and from key cities in Tanzania.

The new permissions will last six months while authorities try to resolve the issue.

In a statement, the TCAA said the decision aims to “safeguard tourism, business continuity, and international mobility.”

The ban affects only aircraft registered in Tanzania and does not apply to international airlines based in other countries. These airlines are still operating normally in the country.

Travellers have been urged not to cancel their trips.

The TCAA also stressed that Tanzania remains safe and open to international visitors.

“The aviation sector continues to operate in accordance with international safety and regulatory standards,” the authority said.

To help Tanzanian airlines continue flying, the TCAA has allowed them to partner with international carriers through codeshare agreements and special permits.

This will help keep flights running within Tanzania and across the region.

Among them was 25-year-old junior doctor Mohit Chavda from Ahmedabad, who described his harrowing escape through dense, choking smoke after the plane tore through the dining hall.

"A gust of wind and smoke just entered from the windows into the hall where we were eating. Everybody panicked, first of all, because of the 'boom' of the sound which we heard from the blast, and there was almost zero visibility. We were unable to see who was sitting beside us. So we just ran from there," Mohit said.

A devastating air disaster in India has caused the grief of families mourning the loss of at least 279 lives after a London-bound passenger jet crashed. The victims in Ahmedabad spanned a wide spectrum of society, from a prominent political figure to a teenage tea vendor.

Of the 242 people on board, only one survived: a British national who miraculously emerged from the wreckage of the blazing aircraft on Thursday afternoon. His escape stands as the sole story of survival.

Among the victims was 68-year-old Vijay Rupani, a prominent figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party and the former Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Why the EU is banning flights in its airspace

The criteria for the ban

The EU’s Air Safety List, managed by the European Commission (EC) with support from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), targets airlines and countries with deficient safety oversight.

Bans are imposed based on International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, focusing on; ineffective supervision by national aviation authorities, gaps in maintainance or failure to meet airworthiness directives, lack of certification from EASA’s Third Country Operators (TCO) by non-EU authorities, which assesses safety management, maintenance, and operational controls.

As of June 2025, 169 airlines are banned from EU skies: 142 from 17 countries with systemic oversight failures and 27 individual carriers, and 22 Russian airlines, due to specific safety irregularities.

What Tanzania's ban means

On Tuesday, June 3, the EC expanded its ban to all 34 Tanzanian-certified airlines, including ATCL, citing “serious deficiencies in national aviation oversight”,

While no Tanzanian airline currently operates in Europe, the ban derails ATCL’s plans to relaunch routes to London, Frankfurt, and Athens, stunting its long-haul ambitions to compete with carriers like Emirates.

The TCAA has responded swiftly to the ban, noting that the ban has “no operational impact” on current services, as Tanzanian airlines do not fly to the EU.

It also reassured travellers that Tanzanian skies are safe, citing a clean safety record and alignment with ICAO standards, The Citizen reports.

Impact on Tanzania’s aviation

The European Union’s June 4, 2025, ban on all Tanzanian-certified airlines, including Air Tanzania (ATCL), from EU airspace hampers ATCL’s plans to launch routes to London, Frankfurt, and Athens, costing $15–20 million annually in lost revenue.

The country’s civil aviation authority is introducing the penalty to stop people from moving toward the exit while the aircraft is still landing or taxiing.

Authorities say the move is aimed at improving safety and ensuring passengers follow instructions to remain seated until it is safe to leave.

Airlines will be required to warn travellers that breaking the rule could result in a fine.

According to the German DPA news agency, “Airlines are obliged to remind passengers to fasten their seatbelts during and after landing until they reach the parking position and to explicitly point out that any infringement will be reported to the aviation authority, and a fine will be imposed.”

Turkey is one of the most visited countries in the world, drawing millions of tourists every year. The new rule is expected to make the landing process smoother and less chaotic for both crew and passengers.

The Civil Aviation Board has approved new rules to better protect travellers, especially those who only learn about disruptions after arriving at the airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) said airlines must now offer food, drinks, and communication access, such as phones and emails, if international flights are delayed by more than two hours.

For delays longer than five hours, passengers are entitled to additional support, including at least 1,500 baht ($40.50) in cash or an equivalent in vouchers, credit, or flyer miles. They can also cancel their trip and ask for a refund.

Airlines must provide accommodation and transport if needed.

For delays over 10 hours, passengers will receive between 2,000 baht ($54.00) and 4,500 baht ($121.50), depending on the flight distance. These rules also apply if a flight is cancelled without at least seven days' notice.

Domestic travel lers will now receive 1,200 baht ($32.40) for delays over five hours, an increase from 600 ($16.20) and 1,500 baht ($40.50) for cancellations. Other forms of compensation, such as travel credits or vouchers, can also be offered.

Tarmac delays, where passengers wait on the plane before take-off, are also covered.

Per the new rules, airlines must ensure air circulation, working toilets, and medical help if needed and if a flight does not take off within three hours, passengers must be allowed to leave the plane unless it risks safety or disrupts air traffic control.

The CAAT said the updates are meant to improve fairness and support for travellers.

The closures come after India launched “Operation Sindoor,” a series of missile strikes on what it described as terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The move was in response to a recent deadly attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that the airports will remain closed until at least Saturday, May 10.

Affected airports include major hubs like Srinagar, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh, Chandigarh, and Jaisalmer. The decision has disrupted hundreds of flights and created long delays, especially across northern and western India.

Airlines including IndiGo , Air India, and SpiceJet have cancelled services to the affected areas and are offering full refunds or free rescheduling.

IndiGo said in a statement, “Due to government notification on airspace restrictions, over 165 IndiGo flights from multiple airports... are cancelled until 0529 hrs IST of 10 May 2025.”

Delhi Airport, the busiest in the country, saw the cancellation of more than 140 flights on May 8 alone, local reports indicate.

International carriers such as Qatar Airways and American Airlines also altered their schedules, with some halting services to and from Pakistan due to airspace concerns.

The situation worsened on May 8 after India’s air defence systems intercepted what officials called a Pakistani missile and drone attack in the states of Jammu, Punjab and Rajasthan.

The strikes triggered blackouts, air raid sirens, and the suspension of an Indian Premier League cricket match in Dharamshala.

As security remains tight, airlines are urging passengers to arrive at operational airports early.

“We request you to allow some extra time for your journey to accommodate security checks and formalities,” IndiGo said on social media .

The government has not said when full flight services will resume.

The move is expected to enhance Uganda’s connectivity with key European business and tourism markets.

Speaking at the launch event held at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki emphasised the strategic importance of the new route, the New Vision reports.

"Uganda's exports to the United Kingdom in the last year were worth $22.6 million. We are confident that our cargo capacity, along with our plans to expand and enhance cargo operations with a freighter later this year, will support the rapid growth of Ugandan exports to the UK," Bamuturaki stated.

She further highlighted that the route would boost Uganda Airlines' international profile and position it more competitively in global aviation markets.

The new route will be serviced by Uganda Airlines’ Airbus A330-800 Neo, which features economy, premium economy, and business class seating. Initial operations will include four flights per week to London Gatwick Airport, marking Uganda Airlines’ third intercontinental destination, following Dubai and Mumbai.

Uganda has lacked direct flight access to the UK since British Airways suspended services nearly a decade ago.

Naval advancements

Turkey is enhancing its naval capabilities with the recent addition of two new 3,000-ton frigates, reflecting its ambition to assert maritime power. Haluk Gorgun, head of the presidency’s Secretariat of Defense Industries, emphasised that these ships symbolise Turkey’s determination to strengthen its naval presence and influence in the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Seas. According to Japan Times , this initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster Turkey's domestic defense industry, traditionally noted for drone production.

Turkish-Baghdad bilateral relations

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived in Baghdad for an official visit to discuss bilateral relations with Iraqi officials, including Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. Key topics will include intelligence coordination against the PKK, the Syrian situation, and the Development Road project. Fidan's visit may also extend to Erbil as Turkiye seeks to enhance its response to PKK activities in northern Syria, Shafaq reports. This follows a previous visit in April 2024, where 27 agreements between Iraq and Turkiye were signed.

Arrests

Fifteen people have been arrested in Turkey following a devastating fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Kartalkaya ski resort that killed 78 and injured dozens. Investigations revealed the hotel lacked essential fire safety measures. India Today reports that the fire, which started in the restaurant, forced guests to jump from windows during the night. Calls for accountability and reform are rising, with the hotel management cooperating with authorities. The judicial proceedings continue against the hotel's owner, manager, and other officials. President Erdogan stated that efforts are underway to punish those responsible for the tragedy.

Safe air travel

A Turkish Airlines flight (TK612) from Uganda's Entebbe International Airport to Istanbul returned safely to Entebbe after concerns arose over safety. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) confirmed all 269 passengers were unharmed, noting that the plane circled for over three hours to reduce fuel for a safe landing. The specific safety issue was not disclosed, Mid-Day news reports, but it was emphasised that the actions taken were standard aviation safety procedures.

Trail repairs

The Turkey Mountain paved trail in Tulsa will be closed from February 3 to April for repairs to a sewage line beneath it. The River Parks Authority announced there is no detour available during this closure, Fox23 reports.

Death sentence

A Vietnamese court has upheld the death sentence of property tycoon Truong My Lan, chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Holdings, due to her involvement in the country's largest financial fraud case, involving $12 billion embezzled. The court stated her life could be spared if she returns 75% of the embezzled amount. At 68, if she turns 75 before execution, her sentence could automatically be commuted to life in prison. Bangkok P ost reports that Lan's actions have caused significant societal and economic repercussions. Despite her claims of remorse and partial repayment, prosecutors deemed them insufficient. Lan has the right to request a retrial. Her arrest in 2022 triggered a run on Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank, leading to a $24 billion rescue by the central bank. Additionally, she received a life sentence in a separate trial for fraud and money laundering.

Singapore investments

National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn met with leaders of major Singaporean corporations during his official visit to Singapore on December 3. He praised Keppel's contributions to Vietnam's infrastructure, real estate, and renewable energy sectors and expressed support for the company's investment expansion in sustainable development areas. Mẫn highlighted Singapore as Vietnam's second-largest foreign investor, noting the success of the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks. He reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to facilitating foreign investments, mentioning recent legal amendments to attract more investors, Vietnam Plus reports. Temasek's Deputy CEO Chia Song Hwee acknowledged Vietnam's support, citing SGD3 billion in investments across various sectors. Mẫn also welcomed investments in the Hồ Chí Minh City Eco-Tech Township project and emphasized ongoing government efforts to improve investment conditions for foreign businesses.

Vietnamese tourists missing in South Korea

A group of 38 Vietnamese tourists, part of an 80-person group visiting Jeju Island, South Korea, failed to board their scheduled return flight after losing contact at a sightseeing spot on November 17. South Korean authorities are using CCTV to track their whereabouts, and they will be deemed illegal residents after December 14 when their visa-free stay expires. According to Vietnam News , the Vietnamese Embassy in South Korea is coordinating with local authorities on the incident and has urged citizens to respect local laws to maintain the positive image of Vietnam.

Air Travel expansions

AirAsia has announced five new routes to Vietnam as part of its expansion in the region, responding to the growing demand for travel. New flights include HCM City to Phnom Penh starting December 22 and Hà Nội to Phnom Penh launching January 24, 2025. Additionally, services from Phú Quốc to Bangkok and Đà Lạt to Kuala Lumpur have recently resumed. Air Asia indicates that the airline will also begin flights from HCM City to Kota Kinabalu on December 3. AirAsia aims to enhance affordable connectivity to Vietnam, increasing its weekly flights to 195 and offering over 1.7 million visitor seats annually.

Inflation

Việt Nam's inflation for 2024 is projected to reach 4-4.5%, up from 3.5% in 2023, driven by rising global energy and food prices and increased domestic production costs due to Typhoon Yagi. Despite a 17.9% year-on-year increase in state budget revenue to VNĐ1.45 quadrillion (US$57 billion), development investment spending declined by 11.8% amid slow public investment disbursement. According to VietNam news , the Ministry of Finance presents two inflation scenarios: one predicting a CPI rise of about 3.7% and another estimating a 3.92% increase due to potential public service price adjustments. Authorities emphasise implementing measures to control inflation and manage prices effectively.

Wildfires

Fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest surged in September 2023, reaching the highest number of hotspots for that month since 2010, with 41,463 detected. This increase is attributed to prolonged drought conditions linked to climate change. The first nine months of 2023 saw the worst fire activity since 2007. In the state of Para, which recorded its highest number of hotspots since 2007, smoke covered vast areas, and low water levels in the Amazon basin were evident. Fires, typically set for land clearance, are exploited by criminals aiming to profit from the land. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the fires as criminal, while federal police are intensifying efforts against environmental crimes. Channelnewsasia reports that fires in the Amazon typically peak in August and September, correlating with the region's dry season.

Repatriation from Lebanon

Brazil's Foreign Affairs Ministry has announced plans to repatriate Brazilian nationals from Lebanon following Israeli airstrikes in Beirut. Coordination will take place with the Defense Ministry and the Brazilian embassy, with a repatriation date to be determined based on safety conditions, according to the Brazilian Report . The urgency of the operation has increased as Israeli ground operations began in southern Lebanon. Approximately 22,000 Brazilians reside in Lebanon and Israel, highlighting the importance of this action.

Sports betting

A recent study by DataSenado reveals that over 22 million Brazilians (13% of adults aged 16+) placed sports bets in the past 30 days. The majority of bettors (56%) are aged 16 to 29. The findings highlight a male-dominated demographic, with 62% identifying as male and 38% as female. Betters also tend to be educated, with 40% having completed secondary education, and 68% employed. Sports betting regulations will take effect in Brazil on January 1 next year, prompting discussions on advertising policies.

Emergency plane landing

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's plane experienced a technical issue, forcing it to circle Mexico City for hours before landing safely after his official visit for President Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration. The aircraft, a 20-year-old Airbus A319, burned off fuel to make a safe landing. TBS News reports that Lula was expected to change planes in Mexico City before returning to Brasilia.

Unblocking of X in Brazil

A Brazilian judge has ordered the unblocking of Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) bank accounts, allowing the platform to settle over $5 million in fines and possibly resume operations in Brazil after being suspended since August 31 due to a dispute over disinformation. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had previously shut down X after Musk failed to comply with court orders, including the removal of certain accounts and appointing a legal representative. X has begun to meet the court's conditions in hopes of reinstatement, while Musk has publicly criticized de Moraes, local reports say. Before the ban, X had over 22 million users in Brazil.

It was also operating under a fake registration number and had parts of it scratched off.

Crew members were also found to be three Mexican nationals and a Spanish national after investigations.

The crew claimed a radio failure before landing but a technical inspection revealed otherwise.

The flight captain, who initially said he couldn’t speak English, later confessed to being paid $20,000 to fly the plane.

Investigations are underway by the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), security forces and the Office of the National Security.

So far, six individuals including two Sierra Leonean air traffic controllers are being investigated.

Local reports indicate that the aircraft has been secured and declared safe with no suspicious items found on board. Sierra Leonean police and military personnel are currently guarding the aircraft while investigations continue.

Missing boy found in forest after four days

A six-year-old boy was found alive in a northern Vietnam forest after being missing for four days. He disappeared while returning home from a celebration with siblings in Yen Bai province. More than 200 people participated in the search, which included draining a pond out of concern he might have fallen in. The boy was discovered in a cassava bush, exhausted but safe. According to the Star , he survived by drinking from a stream and eating familiar leaves and wild fruits. His mother expressed immense relief upon his return, noting he appeared thinner and weaker.

Bilateral trade with Laos using local currencies

Vietnam and Laos are collaborating to enhance the use of their domestic currencies in bilateral trade to mitigate external risks. The State Bank of Vietnam and the Bank of Laos hosted a conference to share experiences and initiate a joint cross-border retail payment system, managed by the Vietnam National Payment Corporation and the Lao National Payment Network Co. Ltd. The Vietnam-Laos cross-border payment project, which will utilise QR codes, is in preparation, with a planned launch in September involving nine Vietnamese banks and 13 Lao banks. This initiative aligns with broader ASEAN efforts to use domestic currencies in trade to guard against political and financial instability, the Nation Thailand reports.

Anti-human trafficking campaign

Nghệ An Province in north-central Vietnam has launched an intensified campaign against human trafficking, coinciding with "National Day Against Human Trafficking." The initiative focuses on raising awareness and combating trafficking, particularly targeting vulnerable populations in remote areas with high unemployment rates, such as women and children. Local police report that traffickers exploit social connections and social media to lure victims with false job offers, often involving sham marriages. Victims are frequently trafficked to countries like Laos and Cambodia, where they face abuse, forced labour, or coercion into illegal activities, Vietnam News reports.

Severe coastal erosion

Severe coastal erosion in Hoang Hoa District, Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam, has led to the sea encroaching up to 100 metres inland, particularly affecting the communes of Hoang Truong, Hoang Thanh, and Hoang Phu. Affected areas have lost 15-20 metres of land since late July, impacting 25 hectares of farmland, 205 homes, and public infrastructure, local media Tuoitre reports. The provincial administration has declared a state of emergency and proposed building a coastal embankment to combat further erosion. Warning signs have been erected to keep people away from dangerous areas, and plans for disaster prevention and evacuation are being developed.

Domestic routes among Southeast Asia's busiest

In August, the Hanoi-HCMC route emerged as the busiest in Southeast Asia, with over 949,000 passengers. It outpaced other major routes like Jakarta-Makassar and Cebu-Manila. The Da Nang-HCMC route ranked fifth with over 427,700 passengers, while the Da Nang-Hanoi route was seventh, serving over 410,000 passengers. Other notable routes included Surabaya-Makassar and Jakarta-Medan, as VN Express reports.

This figure places Mexico sixth globally, surpassing popular destinations like the United Kingdom (37 million), Germany (35 million), and Greece (33 million).

The influx of tourists impacted Mexico's economy with tourism injecting approximately $46.4 billion into the country's GDP in 2023. The sector also witnessed a remarkable 15% growth compared to the previous year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

But the story of Mexico's tourism success goes beyond statistics. According to Statista , the country's commitment to improving its airport and flight infrastructure contributed to the astronomical tourist numbers.

"By developing airport infrastructure and calibrating new direct flights, Mexico has set international tourism high on its priorities list. At the forefront of Mexico's spike in international tourism is the FONATUR, or Mexico's National Fund for Tourism Development. The tourism body worked in the expansion of Cancun's airport and other four key tourist airports in the country. Plus, Mexico City's airport added new international direct flights in the 2010s, resulting in being rated as the best internationally connected airport in Latin America in 2019," Statista reports.

Connolly Cove also attributes Mexico's tourism achievement to destinations like Cancun. It remained the most popular destination attracting 25% of all visitors. Chichen Itza and Tulum, famous for their ancient Mayan ruins also drew 18% of tourists.

Additionally, colonial cities like Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende accounted for 12% of visitors and Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, known for their Pacific beaches, attracted 10% of tourists.

Economic growth projections

Kenya's economy is expected to grow 5.5% in 2024 and 2025, according to Finance Minister Njuguna Ndung'u. This announcement was made during the presentation of the country's 2024/25 budget to parliament. The budget was accompanied by the Finance Bill 2024, a separate law outlining revenue-raising proposals which many critics said could cripple sectors including financial and internet services, Monitor reports.

Airways debt

The Kenyan government repaid $135 million of Kenya Airways' debt in the third quarter of the 2023/24 financial year, CH-Aviation reports. The debt, which decreased to $766.4 million, was converted into external public debt, with the National Treasury becoming the primary debtor. Kenya Airways is required to provide a report on its turnaround strategy and financial recovery. The debt repayment is seen as a positive step toward attracting strategic investors and is integral to Kenya's programme with the International Monetary Fund. The debt was initially provided by Citibank and JP Morgan Chase Bank in 2017 and was taken out to finance aircraft purchases.

Sudan-Kenya talks

South Sudan's success in talks with holdout groups in Kenya has been seen as a potential influence for peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan. The government is committed to peaceful means through dialogue and believes the talks in Kenya signify a positive gesture for peace in the region. The Sudan Tribune reports that ceasefire talks on humanitarian issues in Sudan will resume after consultations between the parties have been concluded and approved by the principal leaders. Former Kenyan army commander Lazarus Sumbeiywo is mediating the peace talks.

Building collapse

A four-storey building collapsed in Nairobi, trapping five people inside. According to Kenyans.co.ke , two casualties were rescued and given first aid before being taken to the hospital. A multi-agency rescue operation is ongoing, with previous collapses in the area reported.

New tax hikes

Kenya is set to present a record budget with new tax hikes, aiming to fill the government's cash-strapped coffers. The proposed finance bill has drawn sharp criticism for its tax increases, which are expected to hit the financial services, manufacturing, and retail sectors. According to France 24 , opposition leader Raila Odinga has described the new taxes as "insensitive as they are callous" and warned of further pain for the poor. Despite concerns about the impact of the tax hikes on the economy, the bill is expected to pass due to the government's large parliamentary majority. Kenya's total public debt is around 70 percent of GDP, with the IMF recently agreeing to provide additional funding.

India is currently facing its longest heatwave, with temperatures over 50C in some areas. At least 60 heat-related deaths have been reported, but the actual number is likely higher. Water shortages and heat-related illnesses are having a major impact. The monsoon is expected to bring some relief, but officials warn that heatwaves will continue to be a problem if precautions are not taken. The country's reliance on coal for power is contributing to the problem, the BBC reports.

Religious diversity in minority affairs ministry

The minority affairs ministry has elected for the first time in its history, a Buddhist Kiren Rijiju as its head. Before this, the ministry was led by Muslims even under BJP governments.
