Antarctica usually comes to mind when people think of penguins. That instinct is right, but it is only a part of the story. Penguins are much more geographically widespread, with significant populations across South America, Africa, and Oceania.

Antarctica is home to an estimated 44 million penguins, making it by far the largest stronghold for the species. According to World Population Review , this figure includes massive colonies of Adélie, Emperor, Chinstrap, and Gentoo penguins.

After Antarctica, Chile holds the second-largest penguin population in the world, with roughly 13 million birds. Its long southern coastline supports Humboldt, Magellanic, and Gentoo penguins.

Neighbouring regions also play an important role, as the Falkland Islands have approximately 1.2 million penguins, Argentina has around 1 million, and Peru has roughly 4,000 birds.

Penguins are not confined to icy environments. South Africa is home to about 60,000 African penguins, while Namibia supports roughly 26,000. These birds live in temperate climates and depend heavily on sardine and anchovy stocks.

In Oceania, Australia has around 500,000 penguins, mainly Little Blue penguins and New Zealand hosts a similar number, including Yellow-eyed and Little Blue species.

The African penguin is, however, currently classified as endangered by the WWF, with populations declining sharply due to food shortages and human activity.

Countries like Brazil , with about 10,000 penguins, sit at the edges of penguin migration routes. These birds are often vulnerable, as they are far from core breeding grounds and more likely to be affected by changing ocean currents.

Penguins are indicator species. When their populations drop, it signals deeper problems in marine ecosystems. The World Wildlife Fund notes that protecting penguins means protecting fisheries, ocean biodiversity, and climate stability at the same time.

Seller Glacier tops the charts as the largest in the world

Seller Glacier, located on the western edge of the Antarctic Peninsula, has been identified as the largest individual glacier in the world . Spanning an immense 7,018 square kilometres, this colossal ice body is slightly smaller than the Greek island of Crete.

According to the infographic published by World Visualized, Seller Glacier surpasses other large glaciers such as Alexander Island Glacier No. 1 (4,766 sq. km), Thurston Island Glacier No. 1 (5,261 sq. km), and Alexander Island Glacier No. 2 (3,980 sq. km). These impressive measurements underscore Antarctica’s continued dominance in global glacier rankings.

The World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), renowned for its extensive data on glacier changes worldwide, highlights that glaciers in Antarctica have exhibited significant variability due to climate shifts. While some, like Seller Glacier, maintain their vast size, others are showing signs of retreat, a phenomenon well-documented in the WGMS annual bulletins.

According to the WGMS’s latest reports, glaciers worldwide are losing mass at an accelerating rate. The largest glaciers, like Seller, may be more stable due to cold temperatures and slower ice flow compared to rapidly melting alpine glaciers.

The National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) confirms that Antarctic glaciers, including Seller Glacier, contribute significantly to global ice mass but currently add less to sea level rise compared to glaciers in Greenland and the Arctic. Seller Glacier’s location on the western peninsula, however, places it near regions vulnerable to oceanic warming and increased ice shelf disintegration—a factor that researchers are closely monitoring.

NSIDC’s annual “State of the Cryosphere” report states that Antarctica’s contribution to sea level rise is increasing but remains lower than Greenland’s due to the vast interior ice sheet’s relative stability. Additionally, peripheral glaciers like Seller are more susceptible to warming seas, potentially accelerating their retreat in the future.

The spotlight on Seller Glacier’s sheer size isn’t just a matter of academic curiosity. Glaciers like the Seller play a crucial role in regulating sea levels and influencing ocean circulation patterns. Understanding their dynamics is vital for predicting future sea-level changes that could impact millions of people living in coastal areas.

The team of nine was set to spend months together at South Africa’s Sanae IV base, located about 170km from the ice shelf. The base is extremely difficult to reach, especially during winter.

A South African government spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that an assault had taken place. This followed earlier concerns about inappropriate behaviour at the station.

Reports say some team members have asked to be rescued. South Africa's environment ministry, which oversees the base, said it was treating the situation with urgency.

Before being sent to Antarctica, all team members had gone through background checks, medical exams, and psychological evaluations.

The ministry said that while some people struggle to adjust to isolation, there were no warning signs before the team left on February 1.

The assault was reported on February 27. Since then, officials have been holding daily discussions with the team to improve relations and maintain discipline.

The ministry is also investigating allegations of sexual harassment but denies that sexual assault took place. It said a government minister is handling the case directly.

The accused scientist has undergone further psychological evaluation, shown remorse, and written an apology to the victim. Officials say he is cooperating fully with the process.

The Sanae IV base, located more than 4,000km from South Africa, houses researchers for around 13 months at a time. Due to extreme weather, travel to and from the station is almost impossible for much of the year.

Petro's message to Biden about Gaza

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a supporter of the Palestinian cause, stated on X that U.S. President Joe Biden "must act quickly to stop the genocide in Gaza." He also said that "the Israeli people must change their current government and open the path to a definitive peace based on the existence of two sovereign states."

Vice President meets with Pope Francis

Colombia's Vice President, Francia Márquez, and Pope Francis met at the Vatican on Thursday, December 14. After the meeting, Márquez posted a video on X, in which she shared that the two South American leaders discussed peace in Colombia, social justice, climate change, and "historical reparations for Afro-descendant and indigenous people who continue to experience the consequences of colonialism and slavery."

Scientific research vessel

The first scientific research vessel made in Cartagena, Colombia, set sail for Antarctica on Thursday, December 14. The vessel, named ARC Simón Bolívar, will carry out scientific projects and study the impact of the climate crisis on coastal regions. It is the largest ship built in Colombia for ocean research and is equipped with technologies for geophysical, oceanographic, and hydrographic studies, as reported by El Universal.

Colombian minerals company

The Colombian government presented a project that aims to create "the Ecopetrol for the mining sector". Ecopetrol is the largest petroleum company in the country. According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the initiative will help drive the transformation from primarily extractive mining to productive mining. It will also aim to generate wealth for the state.

Energy for Ecuador

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho, met with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Andrea Arrobo, to discuss the energy supply to the neighbouring country. Ecuador has been facing electricity shortages since late October due to drought affecting the operation of its hydroelectric plants. Colombia pledged to provide energy to Ecuador as long as its hydrological reserves allow it to do so. The minister posted on his X account: "We maintain our total commitment to our brotherly country, Ecuador, to provide all available energy, with the assurance of having energy back for the strongest period of the El Niño phenomenon in Colombia. That's what the climate cooperation we proposed to the continent is all about."
