Homes in Australia and the United States are among the largest in the world, according to international housing data, highlighting how geography, urban planning and lifestyle preferences shape residential living space across countries.

Figures compiled by World Population Review show that Australia ranks first globally for average home size, followed closely by the United States and New Zealand.

Australia's residential properties average about 2,303 square feet (214 square metres).

The large average reflects Australia’s suburban development patterns, relatively lower population density and a long-standing cultural preference for detached houses.

Many Australian homes include large outdoor spaces, multiple bedrooms and expansive living areas, features common in suburban developments across cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The United States ranks second globally, with the average new single-family home measuring roughly 2,299 square feet, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

American housing has historically grown larger over the decades, driven by suburban expansion and consumer demand for bigger living spaces.

U.S. housing statistics show that new homes often include features such as large kitchens, garages and open-plan layouts, contributing to the country’s high average residential floor area.

New Zealand follows closely with an average home size of about 2,174 square feet (202 square metres).

Canada ranks fourth, with average homes around 1,948 square feet (181 square metres), reflecting similar suburban development trends seen in North America and parts of Oceania.

Both countries have relatively low population densities compared with many European nations, allowing for larger residential developments.

European countries generally have smaller homes on average, largely due to higher population density, historic urban design and different housing traditions.

Norway ranks fifth globally with homes averaging 1,496 square feet, followed by Greece at 1,356 square feet and Belgium at 1,293 square feet.

The Netherlands and France also appear in the top ten, with average homes measuring around 1,261 square feet and 1,206 square feet, respectively.

Spain rounds out the list with an average home size of 1,044 square feet, reflecting the country’s high proportion of apartment living in urban areas.

Australia tightens checks on Indian students after fake degree bust

Indian students have been moved into Australia’s highest student visa risk category , alongside applicants from Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, in an out-of-cycle review by Australian authorities.

The reclassification was attributed to what officials described as “emerging integrity risks.”

While Australia has not publicly cited a specific trigger, Indian media said the move followed international reporting on “fake degree busts” in India that raised red flags about the authenticity of academic credentials used in overseas applications.

India is one of Australia’s most important international education markets, accounting for about 140,000 of the country’s roughly 650,000 foreign students. Together, the four countries now in the highest risk tier represent nearly a third of enrolments in 2025.

The assessment level change is expected to subject Indian applicants to closer checks, including stricter requirements for financial proof, English proficiency and evidence of genuine study intentions, according to Australian education analysts.

Fake diploma racket

The decision comes as police in India’s Kerala state dismantled a sprawling fake university certificate racket last month. Investigators said forged degrees from multiple universities were produced and distributed nationwide, with tens of thousands of counterfeit documents seized.

Australia’s Minister for International Education, Julian Hill, has previously warned that Australia is becoming the “least worst” option among major study destinations as countries such as the United States , Britain and Canada tighten their own student visa rules.

Education officials say that shift has increased pressure on Australia’s visa system, prompting tougher risk filtering and a renewed focus on documentary evidence to protect the integrity of the programme.

Australia flags ISIS link to Bondi Beach Hanukkah attack: Video

Speaking in Canberra, Albanese said the Office of National Intelligence had identified a “regular online video feed from ISIS” linked to the suspects, indicating the attack was ideologically motivated as well as tactically planned.

“We must consider both motivation and method,” the prime minister said. “We’ve been informed that the Office of National Intelligence has identified material that reinforces this was an ISIS-inspired attack.”

The shooting, described by authorities as Australia’s worst mass casualty attack since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, left 15 people dead, including one of the gunmen, and injured more than 40 others. Those killed included Rabbi Eli Schlanger and a Holocaust survivor, according to community leaders.

Police said the attackers were identified as father and son Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son was arrested and remains in custody.

In response, Albanese unveiled a national gun buyback scheme, calling it the most significant firearms reform since the sweeping changes introduced after Port Arthur, where 35 people were killed.

“The terrible events at Bondi show we need to get more guns off our streets,” he said.

Under the proposal, the federal government will partner with states and territories to buy back surplus, newly banned and illegal firearms, with costs shared equally. Albanese noted that Australia now has more than four million firearms in circulation—more than at the time of the Port Arthur tragedy nearly three decades ago.

The government also plans to cap the number of firearms an individual can own, tighten licensing requirements, restrict the types of guns that can be legally owned, require Australian citizenship for firearm licences and fast-track the creation of a National Firearms Register.

“Australians are rightly proud of our gun laws,” Albanese said. “We are not home to the constant carnage we see in some countries, and we intend to keep it that way.”

Lamar Aaron Ahchee, 43, from Cairns in north Queensland, was arrested in May after police raided his rented home near Kuta Beach, a popular tourist area. Officers found 1.7 kilograms of cocaine packed into more than 200 small plastic bags, along with a digital scale and a mobile phone.

Indonesian police said the arrest followed an investigation into two suspicious packages sent to Ahchee from England . Authorities believe he intended to distribute the drugs locally, although Ahchee denied knowing the packages contained cocaine.

Delivering the verdict on Thursday, Judge Tjokorda Putra Budi Pastima said the large quantity of drugs posed a serious risk to public safety and could harm Bali’s tourism industry. The court also cited Ahchee’s lack of cooperation during the investigation as an aggravating factor.

The sentence was harsher than prosecutors had requested. In addition to the prison term, Ahchee was fined two billion rupiah (about US$120,000).

Indonesia has some of the world’s strictest drug laws and remains a major target for international trafficking networks, according to the United Nations . More than 500 people, including dozens of foreigners, are currently on death row in the country, most for drug-related offences.

The attack occurred during a Jewish Hanukkah gathering and left 15 people dead and at least 42 injured. Police have identified the suspects as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The older suspect was shot and killed by police at the scene. Authorities are treating the incident as an anti-Semitic terrorist attack.

Footage from the scene shows al-Ahmed grabbing one of the gunmen from behind, forcing him to the ground and taking his weapon. He is then seen pointing the gun at the suspect, who later fled.

Background and identity

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that al-Ahmed is an Australian citizen of Syrian origin. Family members say he comes from al-Nayrab village near Idlib in Syria and migrated to Australia in 2006. He lives in Sydney, where he runs a fruit shop, and is married with two children .

His brother, Huthaifa al-Ahmed, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that Ahmed was nearby when the shooting began and intervened immediately. “I’m really proud of my brother,” he said. Al-Ahmed was shot twice during the incident and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to St George Hospital in Kogarah, New South Wales, where he is undergoing treatment and further surgery. Albanese visited him in hospital on Tuesday, describing his actions as an example of national unity. “Ahmed al-Ahmed took the gun off that perpetrator at great risk to himself,” the prime minister said.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also praised al-Ahmed, calling him a “real-life hero” whose actions helped prevent further loss of life.

Al-Ahmed’s intervention has been widely commended in Australia and internationally. A fundraising campaign set up to support him and his family has raised more than $218,000. However, misinformation also circulated online following the attack, with false claims about al-Ahmed’s religion and identity. These claims were later corrected by Australian authorities.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the National Security Council (NSC) found no evidence supporting allegations that a father and son accused in the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney received terrorist training in the Philippines prior to the incident on December 14.

Castro said the President strongly objected to what he described as sweeping and misleading characterisations of the Philippines as an “ISIS training hotspot."

According to the NSC, there is currently no validated information confirming that the suspects underwent any form of extremist training while in the country, despite reports circulating in foreign media.

“The Philippine authorities, in coordination with international partners, continue to verify all available information, but no evidence has been presented to support claims that the country was used for terrorist training,” the NSC said in a statement read by Castro.

This follows reports by overseas outlets that described the Philippines, particularly parts of the south, as an ISIS-linked training hub.

For example, a New York Post report claimed the suspects had spent time in a “Third World ISIS hotspot” before the attack, citing unnamed sources. Separately, the New York Times reported that the suspects had travelled to southern Philippines, where ISIS-linked groups have operated, but said their activities there remained unclear.

The NSC said reports failed to reflect the current security situation in the Philippines, noting that ISIS-affiliated groups have been significantly weakened since the 2017 siege of Marawi.

It cited assessments by the United Nations and the United States government indicating that these groups now operate in a fragmented and diminished capacity, with violence in Mindanao largely driven by long-standing local conflicts and clan feuds rather than organised ISIS operations.

The council said the country’s domestic security environment had seen major improvements in recent years as a result of sustained counterterrorism efforts.

“These developments reflect the continued work of our security forces and the resilience of our communities in promoting peace , order and development across the nation,” the NSC said.

Castro added that Marcos has instructed the Anti-Terrorism Council and other security agencies to remain vigilant against any potential threats and to continue strengthening cooperation with international partners to protect national security.

Speaking to Israeli soldiers during a Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday, Netanyahu invoked the story of the Maccabees, describing their fight as a battle for the survival of both the Jewish people and their faith.

“We are fighting today the battle that the Maccabees fought,” Netanyahu said, adding that their victory was central not only to Judaism but also to what he described as the foundations of Judeo-Christian civilisation. He argued that the failure of the Maccabees would have altered the course of world history and the development of societies based on freedom.

Netanyahu said the same spirit underpins the actions of Israeli forces confronting threats on multiple fronts. He said Israeli soldiers operating in Gaza, Lebanon and against Iran were motivated not only by the need to protect the Jewish people and the Israeli state, but also by what he described as a broader fight to defend civilisation.

The Israeli leader also connected the conflict in the Middle East to antisemitic violence abroad, referencing a deadly attack during a Hanukkah event in Australia.

“They did a horrible thing to us on October 7,” Netanyahu said, adding that similar violence was being directed at Jewish communities in places such as Sydney and the United States . He described the situation as a shared struggle against what he called “barbarians,” expressing confidence that Israel would prevail.

Netanyahu’s comments came a day after a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney during a Hanukkah gathering left 16 people dead. Australian authorities said the attackers were a father and son, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son was arrested and remains in custody.

While Ahmed survived bullet wounds to his arm and hand, 69-year-old Boris Gurman and his wife, Sofia, 61, did not.

The video captures a Jewish couple—Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61—stepping in to protect others during the early moments of the attack.

Gurman, a retired mechanic, is seen in the footage wearing a purple shirt, charging at an armed assailant in a black shirt, attempting to disarm him while his wife stood beside him.

Witness accounts and the video suggest the attacker had another firearm, which was then used to fatally shoot the couple. Both Boris and Sofia were among the first victims of the incident, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The Gurman family released a statement describing the couple's actions as instinctively selfless.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness. This encapsulates who Boris and Sofia were— people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others.”

The couple had been married for 34 years, with their 35th anniversary approaching in January.

“We were looking forward to celebrating Sofia’s 62nd birthday on Wednesday, 17 December,” the family added.

Witnesses have described Gurman as a hero. The woman who shared the dashcam footage told Reuters, “Mr Gurman did not run away—instead, he charged straight toward the danger, using all his strength trying to wrestle away the gun and fighting to the death.”

“Everyone needs to know what he tried, because it was right in the beginning. And he put himself in that face of danger. There were bullets flying already, and he put his self in the face of danger,” another witness told reporters.

The attack, which occurred during a Hanukkah event, left at least 15 people dead and 22 others injured, nine critically. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87, including a child, a rabbi, a former police officer, and a Holocaust survivor.

Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community. Police identified the attackers as a father and son, Sajid and Naveed Akram. The father, aged 50, was killed by officers at the scene, while the 24-year-old son remains in hospital.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, calling it “An act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”

The attack occurred on Sunday, December 14, as hundreds gathered to mark the first day of Hanukkah. Authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community.

Police confirmed two suspects were involved. One is deceased, while the other is in critical condition and receiving treatment in the hospital.

Officers also discovered and removed explosive devices from a nearby vehicle. A rescue bomb disposal unit was deployed to secure the area, as the vehicle was believed to contain several improvised explosive devices.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, describing it as “an act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.” He added, “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian and every Australian tonight will be, like me, devastated on this attack on our way of life. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear, we will eradicate it.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the incident in a press conference. “The entire nation of Israel misses a beat in this very moment, as we pray for the recovery of the wounded, we pray for them, and we pray for those who have lost their lives. We send our warmest strength from here, from Jerusalem, and we repeat our alert time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism which is plaguing Australian society .”

Following the attack, police forces in other countries have increased security at public Hanukkah events as a precaution.

Meet Tse Chi Lop, the man once feared as ‘Asia’s El Chapo’

Tse Chi Lop, a 62-year-old Canadian national long suspected of running one of the world ’s most powerful narcotics networks, was jailed for his role in a multimillion-dollar methamphetamine trafficking plot.

Tse was handed a non-parole period of 10 years in the County Court of Victoria after admitting to conspiring to traffic large quantities of illicit drugs within Australia. With credit for time already served, he could walk free in just over five years.

Prosecutors said Tse attempted to move 20 kilograms of methamphetamine — valued at around 4.4 million Australian dollars — between Sydney and Melbourne over a 12-month period from March 2012 to March 2013.

His conviction followed an Australian Federal Police (AFP) probe that targeted Sam Gor, the transnational crime syndicate he was accused of leading.

Sam Gor, also known as “The Company,” has been linked to industrial-scale production and distribution of meth across the Asia-Pacific region. At its height, Australian authorities believe it was the country’s largest supplier of the drug, pushing tonnes of product through a vast international network of traffickers.

Tse’s fall began in 2021, when Dutch police arrested him at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport at the request of the AFP. He spent months contesting extradition before being sent to Australia in late 2022 to face charges.

His sentencing brings to a close more than a decade of investigative work. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the outcome marked the conclusion of “one of the most high-profile investigations in the AFP’s history ,” describing it as a testament to the force’s global reach.

While Tse did not face charges relating to the full spectrum of Sam Gor’s alleged activities, his conviction represents a symbolic victory for Australian authorities, who have long viewed him as a central figure in the region’s drug trade.

Law enforcement agencies across Asia, Europe and North America have spent years trying to dismantle the syndicate, which they allege operated with a level of sophistication comparable to the world’s most notorious cartels.

For now, the man once regarded as the most influential meth trafficker in the Asia-Pacific is behind bars in Melbourne. But authorities say the wider fight against the networks he helped build is far from finished.

From December 10, major platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok must remove under-16 users or risk multimillion-dollar penalties.

According to Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Twitch qualifies for the ban because its livestreaming and real-time interaction features pose risks for younger users.

Other services, such as Pinterest, LegoPlay and WhatsApp, have been allowed to remain accessible for teenagers. Several additional platforms are still under review.

Twitch, which has more than 7 million livestream artists, said most of its audience is between 18 and 34. It did not disclose how many users are younger, though current rules already prohibit anyone under 13 from joining.

The legislation has faced heavy pushback from tech companies, which argue that enforcing strict age limits online is practically unworkable and that the policy has been rushed. Critics say without reliable age-verification technology, the ban may function more as a political statement than a meaningful barrier.

Even so, the move is being closely watched by governments exploring their own approaches.

New Zealand ’s Prime Minister has pledged to pursue similar laws, and officials in the Netherlands have advised parents to keep children under 15 off apps like TikTok and Snapchat.

As it stands, Australia now holds one of the toughest positions on youth access to social media .

The inmate, Andre McKechnie, has filed a lawsuit in an effort to overturn the restriction and allow him to consume the yeast-based spread.

According to court documents, McKechnie argued that he has a right to eat Vegemite because it constitutes “his culture as an Australian.”

His complaint specifically points to Victoria’s human rights charter, which affirms that no person should be denied the opportunity to “enjoy their culture.”

The Vegemite ban inside Victoria’s jails is not new and has been in place since 2006.

The restriction was put in place over concerns that the yeast-laden spread could be used to ferment and brew makeshift alcoholic drinks, often referred to as “pruno” or “hooch.”

Additionally, the sticky paste of Vegemite is listed as a banned item because inmates could allegedly smear it across contraband to mask its smell from prison sniffer dogs.

The spread holds a significant cultural place in Australia. It was first created in Melbourne in the early 1920s as a substitute for British Marmite during wartime shortages.

In 2022, a Melbourne council even declared that the distinctive smell emanating from a local Vegemite factory held “significant” heritage value.

The lawsuit brings international attention to the highly polarizing spread.

In 2018, Vegemite was featured at Sweden’s “Disgusting Food Museum,” ranking alongside items like fermented herrings and maggot-infested cheese.

“Relevant parties should respect the efforts of regional countries to properly handle maritime issues through dialogue and consultation, and to maintain regional peace and stability,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said when asked whether Beijing is concerned with the Philippines, Australia, Japan, and the United States' involvement in the South China Sea.

Ning condemned the “false narratives and unwarranted attacks” being hurled at China.

She described the South China Sea arbitration case — a landmark 2016 decision that declared waters being claimed by China belong to the Philippines — as a mere “political farce” that had no real binding force.

“The so-called ‘South China Sea Arbitration Case’ is a political farce disguised as a legal case, with the aim of stirring up trouble in the South China Sea and profiting from it,” Ning said.

“The so-called 'ruling' is illegal, invalid, and has no binding force; China has neither accepted nor recognised it from the outset.”

China has been aggressively asserting its authority over the South China Sea, with its coast guard repeatedly running after Philippine ships, engaging the water cannon, and ramming into foreign boats.

Despite heating tensions in the region, China said East China Sea and the South China Sea are “generally stable.”

“The Asia-Pacific region is a high ground for cooperation and development, not a chessboard for geopolitical games,” Ning said. “Engaging in bloc politics and camp confrontation will not bring peace and security, and is detrimental to the stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world ."

From Tokyo to Milan, classrooms across Australia reflect the country’s global connections. A newly-released infographic reveals that in several states and territories, the top three languages taught in schools are as diverse as the country itself, led by Japanese, Chinese, Italian, German and Spanish.

For example, in Queensland the top trio includes Japanese, German and Chinese, while in Western Australia it’s Italian, Indonesian and Japanese. In Victoria, Italian leads the way, with Indonesian and French close behind. These patterns underscore how the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority language courses mesh with migration, trade and community language trends.

Official data shows this mix of modern priorities and tradition: while over 20 languages are taught in Australian primary and secondary schools, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, Indonesian, French, German, Spanish and Auslan remain the most common picks .

At the same time, studies reveal that participation in government-priority Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian has declined in recent years — for instance, one 2024 study found that enrolment in these dropped from 4.25 % of HSC students in 2001 to 3.43 % in 2021.

So what’s driving the state-by-state differences? Several factors like the strength of local migrant communities (Italian in Victoria, Indonesian in WA), the links schools maintain with trade partners (Japan and China), and state education policy.

The Australian Curriculum explicitly encourages students to learn another language alongside English, citing expanded cultural, social and employment opportunities.

Current global trends add urgency to these choices. With Australia aiming to deepen trade and diplomatic ties across Asia and Europe, knowing Japanese or Mandarin is more than cultural; it’s strategic.

At the same time, community languages such as Italian or German continue to thrive in regions with strong heritage linkages. Notably, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in April this year, committed A$25 million to support 600 community-language schools teaching more than 84 languages nationwide.

Opposition attempting to bring back instability: PM

Prime Minister Jotham Napat has criticised the opposition’s constitutional challenge, calling it a deliberate attempt to destabilise his administration. He urged political actors to respect the democratic mandate given by the people and focus on maintaining political stability. The PM’s statement came amid heightened tensions surrounding recent legislative changes, reflecting his broader call for unity and responsible governance in Vanuatu’s evolving democracy.

PM defends people’s vote on constitutional reforms

In response to criticism, Prime Minister Napat defended constitutional reforms aimed at ending Vanuatu’s recurring political instability. He emphasised that the amendments emerged from a grassroots democratic process, reflecting the will of the people rather than elite political interests. The reforms seek to strengthen governmental stability and reduce frequent changes in leadership that have historically hampered policy continuity. Napat underscored that the reforms symbolise a collective effort to build a stronger, more resilient democracy.

Australia and Vanuatu agree to $500m deal, but details remain scarce

Vanuatu has signed a $500 million agreement with Australia, focusing on economic transformation, labour mobility, and security cooperation. While officials hailed it as a major step toward deeper regional ties, few details about implementation have been disclosed. The deal aligns with Canberra’s broader Pacific engagement strategy, reflecting its efforts to strengthen partnerships in the face of growing strategic competition in the region. Observers note that transparency and equitable benefit-sharing will be key to the agreement’s success.

Vanuatu maintains non-alignment policy in Nakamal Agreement

Despite its growing ties with Australia, Vanuatu reaffirmed its non-alignment policy under the Nakamal Agreement, emphasising national sovereignty and independence in foreign affairs. Prime Minister Napat reiterated that while partnerships with countries like Australia are vital for development, Vanuatu remains committed to neutrality in international politics. This stance reinforces the nation’s long-standing position of avoiding entanglement in great-power rivalries, particularly between Western allies and China in the Pacific.

Tanna recognized as birthplace of Vanuatu’s independence movement

In a moment of national pride, President Nikenike Vurobaravu formally recognised Tanna Island as the birthplace of Vanuatu’s independence movement. The commemoration highlighted the island’s historical significance in mobilising local leaders and communities during the fight for sovereignty. The event served as a reminder of Vanuatu’s enduring commitment to unity and national identity, even as the country navigates contemporary challenges in governance and development.

Australia and China dominate global wool production

Australia and China remain the world’s top wool producers, according to recent figures from the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO). The data shows Australia leading with 356,745 tonnes of greasy wool, closely followed by China at 332,293 tonnes. Together, they account for nearly half of the world’s wool output.

New Zealand ranks third with 133,100 tonnes, while Turkey, Morocco, Iran, Sudan, South Africa, Russia, and India complete the top ten list. These countries play crucial roles in regional textile industries and global wool supply chains, as reported by IWTO Market .

Global wool production has remained relatively stable in recent years, with gradual improvements in processing efficiency. Clean wool, the fibre after removing grease and impurities, continues to be in high demand, especially as sustainable textiles gain traction.

A recent IWTO report highlights that demand for natural fibres like wool is rebounding as fashion and home textile brands pivot toward eco-friendly materials.

According to Textile Trade Buddy , the global wool market could reach US $21.6 billion by 2032, driven by sustainability-focused consumers and brands. Yet synthetics still dominate the textile world due to cost efficiency and large-scale production, notes a CIRFS industry report .

Australia’s dominance is anchored in its Merino wool, prized globally for its softness, strength, and yield. The country’s well-developed farming systems and favourable climate help maintain its leading position. As IWTO notes, Australia sets global benchmarks in quality and auction pricing.

China, on the other hand, combines large-scale wool production with a powerful textile manufacturing infrastructure. It not only produces raw wool but also processes and exports high volumes of wool garments and fabrics worldwide.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s strong export-driven farming industry keeps it a consistent third-place producer, known for crossbred wool varieties suited for carpets and upholstery.

The wool industry faces increasing scrutiny over environmental impact, particularly methane emissions from sheep farming. A Wall Street Journal report recently highlighted methane as a “blind spot” in the fashion industry’s climate strategy, placing added pressure on animal-based fibre sectors.

In response, wool producers are adopting more sustainable farming practices and certifications that ensure better animal welfare and lower emissions. IWTO reports that regenerative agriculture and non-mulesed wool certifications are on the rise globally.

However, the industry still battles challenges like droughts in key producing regions, rising feed and transport costs, and market fluctuations that affect pricing, issues regularly tracked by Fibre2Fashion .

Innovation remains a strong focus as researchers explore alternative fibres and production methods. In India, for example, scientists are developing milkweed-based fibres that could serve as lighter, warmer alternatives to traditional wool, according to The Times of India .

Despite these innovations, wool remains irreplaceable for many industries due to its natural durability, biodegradability, and ability to store carbon.

When people talk about America’s closest allies, they often focus on politics, trade, or military partnerships. But what about cultural DNA, the deep similarities in demographics, politics, infrastructure, and everyday life?

According to the Country Similarity Index , a data-driven ranking that compares nations across five major dimensions, the United States’ closest cultural cousin is its neighbour to the north, Canada, with a striking similarity score of 79.2.

Trailing behind Canada are fellow English-speaking democracies Australia (71.8), New Zealand (70.5), and Great Britain (69.7), with Puerto Rico tying Britain at 69.7, which is unsurprising given its political connection to the U.S.

Ireland (67.3) rounds out the top five before the ranking widens to include European partners like Germany, France, Norway, and Switzerland. These nations share much of the United States’ institutional, infrastructural, and political framework, even if geography and some cultural elements diverge.

Canada and the U.S. not only share the longest undefended border in the world, but their economies are closely integrated under the USMCA trade agreement, their media and entertainment industries cross-pollinate, and both societies are shaped by waves of immigration and shared democratic norms.

The inclusion of Australia and New Zealand reflects a similar pattern, countries built on British colonial legal systems, English language dominance, and comparable political models. Even across the Atlantic, Germany, France, Norway, and Switzerland land on the list thanks to their high standard of living , advanced infrastructure, and liberal democratic traditions, making them natural partners for Washington on global issues.

This cultural and institutional proximity carries weight in today’s geopolitical climate. It explains why the U.S. often finds it easier to coordinate policy and form coalitions with these nations, whether in trade negotiations, climate summits, or military alliances.

Canada and the U.S., for example, are currently negotiating joint energy and security frameworks, while Australia and New Zealand are playing central roles in the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific strategy.

Across the Atlantic, Germany and France continue to collaborate with Washington on everything from NATO’s security posture to AI governance frameworks, even amid occasional tensions over industrial policy.

Gun ownership laws around the world

Gun laws vary dramatically across the globe, and a new world map lays bare those differences with striking clarity.

In some countries, citizens can own long guns such as rifles and shotguns without a permit. In others, strict licensing regimes demand not only background checks but also a “good reason” for ownership, such as hunting or sport. And in a significant number of nations, private ownership is prohibited outright.

According to Wikipedia’s overview of gun laws by nation, the world can be roughly divided into a handful of legal regimes. At one end of the spectrum are countries like the United States, where no permit is required in many states to own a rifle or shotgun.

At the other end are nations such as China and Singapore, where civilian gun ownership is broadly prohibited, with only narrow exceptions. In between lie most European and Commonwealth nations, which generally allow gun ownership under license but require applicants to demonstrate a legitimate reason, from hunting to sport shooting, and often impose limits on how firearms can be stored and used.

These rules have real-world implications. Research from World Population Review shows that countries with tighter regulations tend to report lower levels of gun violence, though enforcement and cultural attitudes also play a role. For example, Poland requires license applicants to provide a concrete justification and pass medical and psychological evaluations, while Ukraine allows licensed long-gun ownership but keeps handguns under strict control.

These differences have taken on new urgency in recent years. After a mass shooting in Montenegro left 12 people dead, the government moved to tighten its laws, introducing mandatory psychological checks and a grace period for surrendering unregistered firearms.

In the United States, the Supreme Court recently upheld federal regulation of “ghost guns”, untraceable, self-assembled firearms, affirming they fall under the 1968 Gun Control Act.

Even Australia, famous for its strict post-1996 gun laws, now faces challenges from illicit 3D-printed weapons, forcing lawmakers to consider tougher penalties and improved detection.

MP Seoule Simeon begins jail term following car theft conviction

Convicted Epi MP Seoule Simeon reported to Vanuatu Correctional Services on September 10 to begin serving his two-year, six-month sentence for car theft. Officials confirmed Simeon will undergo the same intake and classification process as other detainees, including health checks, risk assessments, and orientation. Simeon has appealed his conviction but must follow all correctional protocols while his case is under review. His imprisonment is one of the rare instances of a sitting MP being formally processed under Vanuatu’s penal system.

Australia’s Albanese makes first visit to Vanuatu before joining Pacific Islands Forum

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived in Port Vila on September 9 for his first visit to Vanuatu as prime minister. He met Prime Minister Jotham Napat and made a courtesy call on President Nikenike Vurobaravu before travelling to Solomon Islands for the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Meeting. Vanuatu’s participation at the 54th PIF Summit will focus on regional priorities, including climate action and economic development.

Vanuatu seizes 450kg of cocaine in yacht, arrests Chinese and Turkish crew

Vanuatu authorities seized over 450 kilograms of cocaine from the yacht Mi Amore in a joint operation involving police, customs, immigration, and the Australian Federal Police. The August 28 raid led to the arrest of three crew members — one Chinese national and two Turkish nationals — who remain in custody as investigations continue. Minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Solomon Napuat said the bust highlights the importance of maritime security under the VPF’s 100-Day Plan. The yacht was first reported near Gaua on August 7 before being escorted for inspection, where hidden compartments containing cocaine were found.

210 more teachers join nationwide strike

The Vanuatu Teachers Union confirmed that 210 additional teachers have joined its strike, which is expected to intensify when Term 3 begins. VTU Secretary General Jonathan Yona said solidarity has grown since the Court of Appeal upheld a Supreme Court ruling declaring the strike legal and reinstating over 600 suspended teachers. The union is demanding a Collective Bargaining Agreement worth about VT8 billion (~ $48.8 million) in compensation and unpaid entitlements. Yona said teachers will not return to classrooms until negotiations take place. The VTU is also preparing damage claims on behalf of members, calling the legal win a victory for workers’ rights and urging others to unionise to protect their interests.

CBA exit threatens millions in Vanuatu citizenship revenue

The Vanuatu government and citizenship agents face a potential major revenue loss after the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) announced it will stop processing transfers for “Designated Agents” under the country’s Development Support Program (DSP) and Capital Investment Immigration Plan (CIIP) from September 30. The CBA acts as the AUD and NZD correspondent bank for the National Bank of Vanuatu (NBV) and ASB Bank in Auckland. Authorities said new arrangements are being put in place to maintain inflows of citizenship program funds and will be monitored to minimise disruption to government and agent revenues.

Today’s most exquisite steaks—think Kobe A5+, Olive Wagyu, and Japanese Wagyu—are now statements, with prices starting at $150 and climbing well above $600 for the top-tier cuts.

Meanwhile, more accessible yet still luxurious options like ribeye cap, tomahawk, porterhouse, New York strip, and filet mignon fetch over $70, a showcase of the evolving taste and purchasing power of consumers.

According to Steak Revolution , Olive Wagyu commands over $200–$400 per pound, prized for its extraordinary marbling and buttery texture derived from cattle fed on olives. Other varieties of Japanese Wagyu range between $75–$400, while Australian Wagyu typically falls into the $100–$200 bracket.

This era of premium steak indulgence comes amid a backdrop of rising beef prices worldwide. In the United States, the average price of uncooked beef steak has soared to a record $11.49 per pound, marking an 8% year-over-year increase.

Ground beef isn't far behind, with a staggering 12% surge to $6.12 per pound. Experts warn this inflation may persist into 2026, driven by tight supplies and shrinking cattle inventories.

Restaurants are responding by revamping menus and leaning into vertical supply chains to stabilise costs and ensure quality.

The global steak market is thriving—valued at USD 76.5 billion in 2023, with projections pointing to USD 110.7 billion by 2032, thanks to growing demand for high-protein, gourmet dining experiences. Premiumisation of meat, boosted by consumer demand for quality and health-conscious choices, continues to drive the market.

In the UK, fresh food inflation hit 2.4% in May 2025, with beef prices playing a significant role. Supply chain disruptions, fewer cattle, and strong international demand—especially from China—are pushing prices upward.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s famed steak exports are on the decline, falling nearly 20% in early 2025 due to a strengthened peso and elevated production costs undermining competitiveness. Top buyer China particularly cut back, leading meatpackers to reduce staff and even shut down some plants.

On the other hand, Australia is experiencing a boom: beef exports jumped 24% in 2024, earning AUD 14 billion, as the nation reclaims its role as a leader in premium, sustainable beef amidst global shortages.

From bustling communities to national institutions, language informs nearly every interaction, but some nations intentionally leave their language policies unwritten.

An interesting global map from The World in Maps reveals the fact that countries, including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, and Eritrea, officially have no declared official language.

In Mexico, the constitution doesn’t name any official language, even though Spanish dominates as the de facto language used by over 99% of the population in government, education, and media. The constitution, honouring the nation's rich heritage, also formally recognises 68 indigenous languages as equally valid under the 2003 General Law of Linguistic Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The United Kingdom strictly has no official national language. However, it supports language equality at the regional level, like Welsh in Wales, Gaelic in Scotland, and Irish in Northern Ireland, all enshrined via legislation and regional charters.

Similarly, Australia does not officially declare any language, though English is the dominant working language. This absence reflects a longstanding respect for both its colonial legacy and its multicultural society.

Eritrea, governed by a constitution that ensures "the equality of all Eritrean languages," avoids privileging any single language. Instead, it supports Tigrinya, Arabic, and English, along with several indigenous tongues, as working languages across the country.

According to language policy analysts (via World Population Review ), these examples represent global recognition that a nation’s identity isn’t tied to a legislated tongue, but rather to cultural, historical, and linguistic harmony.

Nauru Roundup: $1 billion development deal, White House meeting, Australian aid

White House meeting

Nauru’s Minister for Commerce and Foreign Investment, Maverick Eoe, led a delegation to Washington, where they held high-level discussions at the White House. Talks focused on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, and development, with particular emphasis on deep-sea mining partnerships and Nauru’s role in supplying critical minerals for clean energy. U.S. officials expressed interest in strengthening ties with Pacific island states as part of Washington’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy.

$1 billion development deal

Nauru has signed a $1 billion socio-economic development agreement with the China Rural Revitalisation and Development Corporation (CRRDC). The deal will support renewable energy projects, marine fisheries, and eco-tourism, while also creating jobs and promoting cultural exchanges. Government officials said the partnership reflects Nauru’s commitment to building sustainable industries and reducing dependence on foreign aid. The CRRDC agreement is one of the largest foreign investment pledges ever made to the island nation.

Global climate partnership

In a bid to confront the existential threat of rising sea levels, Nauru has joined a global climate resilience initiative. The program aims to channel technical support and funding into Pacific island nations vulnerable to climate change. Under the plan, Nauru will receive assistance in developing coastal protection systems, renewable energy grids, and community-based adaptation strategies. Leaders said the move is crucial for safeguarding the nation’s future amid worsening climate risks.

Fisheries cooperation

Nauru has renewed and expanded its fisheries partnership with Japan, granting Japanese vessels greater access to Nauru’s exclusive economic zone in exchange for technical training and infrastructure support. The deal also includes investments in sustainable fishing practices to ensure long-term resource management. Fisheries remain one of Nauru’s most valuable economic assets, and officials hailed the agreement as a balance between revenue generation and conservation.

Australian aid

Australia has committed new funding to improve infrastructure in Nauru, including upgrades to the island’s main port and road networks. The aid package also covers educational programs and healthcare support, reflecting Canberra’s pledge to maintain strong ties with Pacific island nations. Nauru’s government said the projects will help improve connectivity, enhance trade logistics, and deliver vital services to its citizens.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the removal of Iran's ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi marked the first time since World War II that Australia has taken such a step.

"There's no doubt that these extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil have crossed the line and that is why we have declared Iran's ambassador to Australia persona non grata, as well as three other Iranian officials and they will have seven days to leave the country," Wong said.

"Even before today the Albanese government had taken stronger action on Iran than any previous Australian government, and we have long known that Iran and its proxies tried to destabilise countries in our region and beyond," she added.

Wong also condemned Iran's attacks for damaging social harmony in Australia. "Iran has sought to undermine the cohesion of our community, they have tried to divide the Australian community and they've done so with acts of aggression that not only sought to terrify Australians but put Australian lives in danger," she said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said intelligence services reached a "deeply disturbing conclusion" that Iran directed at least two antisemitic attacks.

He said Tehran was behind a fire attack on the Lewis Continental Cafe in Sydney’s Bondi suburb in October 2024 and an arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne in December 2024. No physical injuries were reported in either incident.

Iran was likely responsible for other antisemitic incidents in Australia, said Albanese.

"These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil," Albanese said. "They were attempts to undermine social cohesion and sow discord in our community. It is totally unacceptable."

Australia is preparing legislation to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

It has withdrawn its ambassador from Tehran and suspended operations in its embassy, which has been operating since 1968.

Australia will keep its diplomatic ties with Iran despite the withdrawal, according to Wong.

Gold remains one of the most sought-after commodities on Earth, valued not only as a financial haven during times of economic instability but also as a key industrial and technological resource.

In 2024, global gold production reached approximately 3,661 metric tonnes, setting a new record amid surging demand from central banks and investors worldwide. But which nations are driving this output, and how do they rank on the global stage?

China

China remains the world’s largest gold producer, responsible for approximately 380 metric tonnes in 2024, around 10–11% of global production. Much of this comes from state-owned companies that dominate the mining sector, alongside global exploration projects tied to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Russia

Russia retained its position as the second-largest producer, yielding roughly 310 metric tonnes in 2024. Despite geopolitical challenges and sanctions, the country’s mining sector remains robust, with gold exports forming an important part of its resource-driven economy.

Australia

Australia ranked third globally with 290–300 metric tonnes of gold mined last year. The country’s prolific reserves in Western Australia continue to sustain its role as one of the world’s gold mining hubs, supported by a mature regulatory and industrial environment.

Canada

Canada produced around 200 metric tonnes in 2024, keeping its place among the top five gold producers. Most of its output comes from mining centres in Ontario and Quebec, where leading firms like Agnico Eagle and Newmont operate major projects.

United States

The United States rounds out the top five with about 160 metric tonnes of production in 2024. The majority comes from Nevada, home to Nevada Gold Mines, a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont, alongside additional production from Alaska.

Together, these five countries account for nearly half of all newly mined gold worldwide. Their output not only underpins global jewellery and technology industries but also shapes financial markets, where gold remains a hedge against inflation and instability.

At the corporate level, mining giants like Newmont (6.7 million ounces in 2024) and Barrick Gold (3.9 million ounces) dominate production and investment flows, reinforcing the global concentration of gold supply.

“Until Israeli and Palestinian statehood is permanent, peace can only be temporary,” Albanese told reporters. “Australia will recognise the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own.”

The announcement follows similar commitments from countries including France, Britain and Canada, which have declared plans to recognise Palestinian statehood since Israel began military operations in Gaza nearly two years ago in response to Hamas attacks.

Albanese said the decision stemmed from assurances from the Palestinian Authority that “there would be no role for the terrorists of Hamas in any future Palestinian state.”

“Australia will recognise the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own, predicated on the commitments Australia has received from the Palestinian Authority,” he said.

“The world cannot wait for success to be guaranteed. That only means waiting for a day that will never come. There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it.”

Palestine remains without statehood largely because the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip have been under Israeli occupation since 1967.

Although a UN plan in 1947 called for separate Jewish and Arab states, only Israel was established in 1948, while the Palestinian territories came under Jordanian and Egyptian control until the Israeli occupation began.

Vanuatu tightens cyber laws to battle online abuse

Vanuatu's Parliament has unanimously passed the Harmful Digital Communications (Amendment) Act of 2025, expanding its 2024 law to combat online abuse, impersonation, and pornography. Key updates include criminalising online impersonation and use of forged IDs for fraud, explicit ban on pornography, including creation, sharing, or hosting, protection for minors and that is exposing those under 16 to pornographic content now carries penalties of up to VT 2,000,000 or three years in prison, court powers to block adult sites and mandate takedowns of illegal content or fake accounts. The law introduces three new offences: digital impersonation using counterfeit IDs, distributing pornography, and exposing minors to explicit content. Companies enabling ID misuse may be fined up to VT 5,000,000.

Digicel Vanuatu commits to 99% mobile coverage under UAP

Digicel Vanuatu has signed its 5th Undertaking under the Universal Access Policy, aiming to extend mobile coverage to 99% of the population. Despite Vanuatu’s challenging geography—over 80 islands across 1,300 km—the telco reaffirmed its commitment to bridging the digital divide. 4G coverage stood at 90% by the end of 2023, according to ITU data. The expansion will also support access to MyCash mobile wallets, e-learning, e-health, and digital finance for remote communities. No timeline was specified. “This is a leap forward to ensuring access to the life-changing potential of mobile coverage,” said CEO Gary Sue-Fong.

Australia helping Vanuatu with museum collection upkeep

After the 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Port Vila in December, staff at the National Museum of Vanuatu were devastated by the damage. "It was all a mess," said curator Kaitip Kami. Thirteen display cases were destroyed, and numerous artefacts—including ancient Lapita pottery—were lost. Housed in the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, the museum safeguards priceless cultural items, including ancestral remains, which survived the fall due to their placement on lower shelves. Under Ni-Vanuatu custom, only the original tribes may repair damaged artefacts. "You have to have the right," said Kami, noting plans to bring in community members from affected islands once funding allows.

Vanuatu, GGGI strengthen climate resilience partnership

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has renewed its commitment to climate action in Vanuatu following a high-level meeting with Climate Minister Ralph Regenvanu. Leaders discussed strengthening collaboration on resilience, adaptation, and sustainable development. GGGI praised Vanuatu’s climate leadership and green progress, including installing 37 solar water pumps across 36 rural communities, aiding over 20,000 people. The institute has also helped shape Vanuatu’s Loss and Damage Policy, adaptation plans, and green investments in energy and forestry. GGGI reaffirmed its support for locally led climate solutions, calling Vanuatu one of its most successful programmes.

Vanuatu has a new island destination

Coming in early 2027, Royal Caribbean will unveil Lelepa , a new private island destination in Vanuatu—the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike the theme-park style of Coco Cay, Lelepa will offer a locally inspired, culturally immersive experience with serene beaches, nature trails, and water activities. Designed in partnership with local communities, everything from the layout to the use of locally grown produce reflects Vanuatu’s culture and environment. “With crystal clear waters and stunning beauty, Lelepa will be the perfect addition to South Pacific holidays,” said Gavin Smith, Royal Caribbean VP for Australia and New Zealand.

Beyond Europe: Where speed still reigns

While Europe dominates with structured high-speed limits and legendary roads like the Autobahn, other parts of the world also boast roads that push the boundaries of legal velocity.

Australia’s Stuart Highway

Stretching across the heart of the Australian Outback, sections of the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory were once famously limitless—and although a 130 km/h (81 mph) cap has been reinstated in most areas, the road remains one of the fastest legal highways in the Southern Hemisphere. It's straight, open stretches invite long-distance driving with minimal traffic.

United States – Texas State Highway 130

In the U.S., Texas State Highway 130 holds the crown for the highest posted speed limit: 85 mph (137 km/h). This toll road bypasses the congestion of Austin and showcases America ’s flirtation with higher speed limits in select corridors. It's a rare taste of speed freedom in a country otherwise known for its strict enforcement.

United Arab Emirates – Sheikh Zayed Road

In the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai not only dazzles with its futuristic skyline but also hosts one of the highest speed limits in the Middle East —140 km/h (87 mph). With multi-lane highways and state-of-the-art road systems, the UAE offers a high-speed driving experience surrounded by cutting-edge infrastructure.

Speed meets engineering

These roads aren't just about going fast—they’re designed for high performance. From intelligent road sensors to strict vehicle inspections and rigorous driver rules, they embody how technology, regulation, and infrastructure can safely coexist with speed.

Connecting cities, countries, and continents, highways have played a key role in commuting.

Some of these roads stretch for thousands of miles, offering memorable journeys through diverse landscapes.

In this article, we explore the longest highways in the world, as highlighted by Daily Passport and GEO Tab .

Pan-American Highway

The Pan-American Highway holds the title of the longest highway in the world, stretching approximately 48,000 km from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska to Ushuaia in Argentina. This incredible route travels across 14 countries.

Highway 1 (Australia)

Australia's Highway 1, also known as the "Big Lap," is the second-longest highway in the world and the longest national highway. It loops around the Australian coast, covering 14,500 km. This route connects cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, and Melbourne.

Trans-Siberian Highway

The Trans-Siberian Highway in Russia is another monumental road, spanning 11,000 km from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. This highway crosses Siberia, offering a glimpse into northern Russia's remote and often harsh landscapes. It's a journey through taiga forests, mountain ranges, and along the shores of Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake.

Trans-Canada Highway

The Trans-Canada Highway is the world's fourth-longest highway, stretching 7,821 km from Victoria, British Columbia, to St. John's, Newfoundland. This route passes through Canada's diverse landscapes.

Golden Quadrilateral (India)

India's Golden Quadrilateral is a network of highways connecting the major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. It covers a total distance of 5,846 km. This highway network is crucial for India's economy as it facilitates the movement of goods and people across the country.

The storm has surged to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, boasting maximum winds of 220 kilometers per hour (138 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Australia's meteorology bureau warned of potential further intensification on Friday, not ruling out the possibility of Jasper becoming a Category 5 system.

Situated 1,195 kilometers (742 miles) northeast of Queensland and moving south at 9 kph (6 mph), Jasper's projected path suggests it could make landfall near Cairns, a city with a population of 250,000, by early Tuesday. However, forecasters caution that the storm's trajectory may still change.

The unusual early arrival of the cyclone coincides with El Niño, a climate pattern originating in the Pacific Ocean, known to reduce rainfall along Australia's east coast and impact global weather patterns.

Simultaneously, heat warnings have been issued across several states and territories, including New South Wales (NSW), where over 8 million people reside. Sydney, the capital of NSW, is forecasted to experience temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) on Saturday, exacerbated by strong, dry winds.

Some schools in Sydney closed on Friday, and parts of NSW were under a total fire ban due to an elevated risk of bushfires. In South Australia, a "catastrophic" fire rating was issued, indicating a high likelihood of significant loss of lives and properties if a fire occurs.

Extreme fire danger ratings were also in place in parts of New South Wales and Victoria. While the heat is expected to abate somewhat by the end of the weekend, Australia remains highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, characterized by frequent heatwaves, extreme rainfall, and devastating bushfires.

For around fifteen minutes on Sunday, the two PLO aircraft circled the A-29B Super Tucano of the Philippine Air Force, according to Brawner. Despite the mishap, he claimed, the Philippine aircraft successfully completed its mission.

"They were flying above when they circled the area, but the circling lasted about 15 minutes, and our aircraft successfully completed its mission. They completed their maritime air patrol in the WPS without any untoward incident," Brawner said in a media briefing.

The AFP chief noted that the actions of the Chinese jets were not unusual. "I don’t think it’s unusual. In fact, it happened this year. May of this year when a US aircraft was also flying over the South China Sea and they also encountered Chinese PLA Air Force aircraft circling them," Brawner explained.

"So, this is not the first time this happened. It also happened between a Japanese aircraft and a Chinese aircraft and between a US aircraft and a Chinese aircraft. This time, with our own aircraft. It seems this is the tactic of China over the South China Sea," he continued.

He emphasized that the Philippines had every right to engage in joint patrols with allies to uphold the international order based on established rules.

The combined maritime and aerial patrols involving Australia and the Philippines are anticipated to continue until Monday, November 27. According to Brawner, there have been no reported incidents.

In the previous week, the Philippines and the United States conducted three-day joint maritime and air patrols in the West Philippine Sea, with a Chinese warship also monitoring their activities.

Defense and military officials are optimistic that multilateral patrols with other like-minded nations in the West Philippine Sea will be conducted soon.

“Aside from the bilateral exercises and joint operations that we are doing, there are some countries expressing their desire to conduct joint maritime and air patrols, not just bilaterally but multilaterally. Right now, there is no specific plan yet, but we are continuously talking with our allies and partners, so this is a possibility probably by next year,” Brawner added.

No fatalities have been reported, but several firefighters sustained minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. The fire, which began in a pine tree plantation on Wednesday, was exacerbated overnight by strong 60-kilometer (37-mile) per hour winds.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and temperatures in Perth were expected to peak at an unusually high 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday.

“Perth is experiencing … heat wave conditions. So overlay that on top of the fire and you can imagine the conditions that our firefighters and our support staff are working on. It’s really challenging,” Kuchel told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

“Whilst we’re building containment lines on this fire, the conditions and the environment are such that even if we contain it, it may not be contained all the time. There may be breakouts. So it’s a really challenging and dynamic environment.”

Power poles suffered damage, leaving 544 homes without electricity on Thursday. Approximately 130 individuals sought shelter in an evacuation center overnight on Wednesday, according to Western Australia Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti.

“The forecast for today is unforgiving. The temperature is expected to hit a maximum of 40 degrees, and the winds continue to be strong. Today will be a difficult day for everybody.”

Klemm mentioned that it would take several days for the 150 firefighters combatting the blaze to gain control over it.

In Tapping, a northern suburb of Perth, Sarah Kilian and her husband chose to remain and protect their home throughout Wednesday night. Kilian noted that the majority of her neighbors evacuated as embers descended on their homes.

“Lucky my hubby stomped them out,” Kilian said. “It was just scary all night — absolutely chaotic.”

Numerous wildfires have swept through New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania in the wake of Australia experiencing its driest September on record and unseasonably warm conditions, leading to an early onset of the annual wildfire season that typically peaks during the Southern Hemisphere summer.

These corridors offer secure pathways across the koala’s increasingly fragmented habitat, enhancing genetic diversity and shielding the animals from human threats.

The koala faces the ominous prediction of becoming extinct in the wild in New South Wales by 2050, with major threats including wildfires, habitat loss through logging, and land clearing for development. It has already been declared endangered in several states.

A 2022 government report revealed that Australia has lost more mammal species than any other continent.

Established in 2019, Bangalow Koalas has planted over 336,000 trees on 119 properties, contributing significantly to koala conservation and enhancing the local ecosystem. The group, relying on community volunteers, aims to plant 500,000 trees by 2025.

A recent report by the Australian Koala Foundation stated that the iconic marsupial is estimated to contribute $3.2 billion annually to the tourism industry.

However, the World Wildlife Fund – Australia reported alarming declines in koala populations, with a 50% drop in Queensland and a 62% drop in New South Wales since 2001.

The availability of funds for property transactions is increasing as a diverse set of investors, including pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and insurance firms, seek higher returns that are challenging to find in today's equity markets, particularly in the real estate sector, which has experienced declines.

According to a report from Reuters, Qualitas, an Australian real estate specialist backed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, has nearly doubled its assets under management to A$8 billion ($5.07 billion) since mid-2022, with approximately half of this growth occurring since June.

U.S.-based PGIM Real Estate intends to deploy an additional $1 billion in the Australian market over the next few years, as noted by its head of Australian real estate, Steve Bulloch.

Over the past 12 to 18 months, there has been a noticeable increase in institutional investor interest, with many viewing the Australian market as an attractive entry point to diversify their investment portfolios.

These developments are part of the ongoing expansion of non-bank lenders in a market where four major banks (Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank, Westpac, and ANZ Group) continue to dominate the majority of lending activities.

Nonetheless, non-bank lending in Australia, accounting for approximately 5% of all financial assets in 2022, remains relatively small in comparison to the International Monetary Fund's estimate of 50% on a global scale.

Non-bank lending has been on the rise, with over A$600 billion in assets reported last year, encompassing lenders focused on retail credit. Lenders are diversifying into residential and commercial construction, filling the void left by banks that are reducing lending or exiting such sectors, according to a March report from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

Investors can expect returns ranging from 9% to 11%, with the added security of loans secured against tangible assets such as condominiums or warehouses, often featuring a 30% to 40% equity buffer.

While these returns offer attractive investment opportunities, they also translate into higher costs for borrowers. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) reported in March that the spread over a major bank loan is approximately 200 basis points for various types of business loans.

Biden criticized Beijing's actions in the West Philippine Sea, after the engagement of a Chinese coastguard ship against a “militia” vessel on Sunday, a “dangerous maneuvering” that led to collisions with a Filipino boat and a Philippine Coast Guard vessel. These vessels were on a mission to resupply troops stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal.

The US President emphasized the resoluteness of the United States' defense commitment to the Philippines, emphasizing that any attack on Filipino aircraft, vessels, or armed forces would trigger the Mutual Defense Treaty between the two countries.

"I want to be very clear. The United States defense commitment to the Philippines is ironclad," Biden said.

"Any attack on Filipino aircraft, vessels, or armed forces will invoke our Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines," he emphasized.

Beijing has claimed a vast portion of the South China Sea, which includes areas within the Philippine exclusive economic zone, disregarding a 2016 international ruling that invalidated its claims.

Meanwhile, Ayungin Shoal is situated approximately 200 kilometers from Palawan and over 1,000 kilometers from China's nearest major landmass, Hainan Island.

The Australian Prime Minister, meanwhile, stressed the increasing importance of their ties in today's unpredictable world. This visit underscores the significance that Washington places on Australia, a longstanding ally, as a key element of its strategy in the face of China's growing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region

The leaders also reviewed progress on the AUKUS deal involving Australia, Britain, and the United States, which will result in Australia acquiring nuclear-powered submarines.

Other discussions include announcements related to technology, climate change, and plans to enhance internet connectivity and maritime infrastructure in Pacific island nations where China has been attempting to expand its influence.
