Footage captured on Friday, March 27, shows large crowds gathered around a ring inside the venue, known as Tiangong Nightclub (TG Ultra), as attendees watch, cheer, and record the matches.

“ People will think of Quanzhou Tiangong as the first, probably the first in all of China, to do this kind of boxing event. Now there are a lot of bars trying to imitate it, but they probably still can't quite capture the essence,” the ring announcer said.

Organisers state that the fights are designed for entertainment rather than professional competition. Participants use thick amateur gloves to reduce the impact during bouts. The concept reportedly started as a way for staff to resolve workplace disputes before developing into a regular feature at the nightclub.

According to Nigerian police and road safety officials, the incident occurred around 11:00 am on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Makun in Ogun State.

Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention. Local authorities confirmed he was “rescued alive” and is “fine”. Two other individuals in the vehicle escaped unhurt, while two others were confirmed dead at the scene.

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria stated that five adult males were involved in the crash. The vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with the number plate KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck. Officials suspect the jeep was travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit and crashed during an overtaking manoeuvre.

Eyewitness reports and preliminary investigations indicate the collision occurred while the vehicle attempted to overtake and lost control. Joshua was seated in the back of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Joshua, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, has family ties to Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has stated that he is gathering more information following reports of the incident.

The accident happened days after Joshua’s sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami, during what was described as a holiday visit to Nigeria.

Tanzania to host the African Energy Summit

Tanzania is set to host the African Energy Summit on January 27–28, bringing together government leaders and over 1,500 executives to discuss energy access for 300 million people in Africa by 2030. According to The Guardian , key outcomes will include the adoption of the Africa Energy Compact and the Dar es Salaam Declaration, which aim to promote sustainable energy access and boost renewable energy adoption. Fourteen countries will unveil plans to enhance energy access and reliability, including Tanzania, which has significantly improved its electrification rates. The summit will emphasize clean cooking energy, infrastructure development, and leadership in energy dialogue, positioning Tanzania as a regional champion in these areas.

Lack of school counselling exposes Tanzanian students to mental health risks

The lack of effective school counselling in Tanzania is exposing students to significant mental health risks, including depression and anxiety, exacerbated by academic stress and family issues. Government directives on counselling services are hindered by insufficient funding, untrained personnel, and limited awareness of their importance. As reported by The Citizen , currently, teachers often take on counselling roles without proper training, impacting their ability to support students effectively. Moreover, many schools lack private spaces for confidential discussions, deterring students from seeking help. The absence of career guidance further complicates students' futures, leading to uninformed decisions that can limit opportunities. Experts emphasise the urgent need for professional counsellors trained in mental health and behaviour management, along with proper infrastructure for confidential counselling.

How Tanzanian farmers reaped billions in 2024

In 2024, Tanzanian farmers experienced significant income growth due to increased production of food and commercial crops, bolstered by favourable prices and ongoing agricultural reforms, such as subsidised fertilizers and the launch of the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX). Key crops like sesame, Arabica coffee, and cashew nuts saw substantial price increases compared to 2023. Farmers earned approximately Sh1.783 trillion from cashew sales alone, up from Sh680.62 billion the previous year. The Citizen reports that the TMX facilitated efficient trading, with sesame volumes traded skyrocketing to 145,886.61 tonnes in 2024 from just 1,134.90 tonnes in 2023, yielding Sh535.68 billion. Regional investments in agricultural support and research have also contributed to higher production. While analysts anticipate continued growth, they caution that underdeveloped irrigation systems pose risks to future yields. Despite these challenges, the agricultural sector is expected to maintain its positive trajectory through enhanced market access and quality improvements.

Tanzania's ACT-Wazalendo files 51 lawsuits over local election results

Tanzania's opposition party ACT-Wazalendo has filed 51 lawsuits contesting the results of the November 27, 2024, local government elections. The lawsuits were lodged in various district courts across mainland Tanzania and are currently in the preliminary stages, with summonses being issued to respondents. ACT-Wazalendo's chief attorney, Omar Said Shaaban, stated that the lawsuits aim to uphold democracy and citizens' rights, which were allegedly compromised during the elections, The Citizen reports.

Tanzanian boxer Hassan Mgaya dies days after being knocked out

Tanzanian boxer Hassan Mgaya died on December 30, 2024, from injuries sustained after being knocked out by Paul Elias on December 27. The fight, held in Dar-Es-Salaam, ended with Mgaya collapsing from a series of head blows, leading to airway obstruction. Despite efforts to save him at multiple hospitals, he succumbed to his injuries. According to Marca , Mgaya had a professional record of 3-4-2 and was the second Tanzanian boxer to die from a knockout in recent months, following Abbasi Mselem's death in November. The Tanzania Boxing Commission expressed condolences to Mgaya's family and the boxing community.

"Your hands, Pierre! Hit him in the body!" his trainer shouts as he sharpens his craft.

Invited to the United States by former French heavyweight Christophe Mendy, Hugues arrived in late November for his first U.S. tour to showcase his talent in the world’s boxing capital.

An accomplished amateur boxer, he sees this as an opportunity to secure funding for his career, which has faced financial hurdles in his native France. “I’ve always seen myself as an able-bodied athlete, with the same passion—sometimes greater—to achieve the same result,” Hugues says, his quiet determination evident over the hum of the Harlem gym.

With plans to turn professional within two years, Hugues hopes to make his mark and inspire others on his journey to Olympic greatness.

Imane Khelif was celebrated as a hero upon her return to Algiers following her victory in the women's 66kg boxing final at the Paris Olympics.

The 25-year-old athlete was greeted by cheering crowds and chants of "Tahia Imane" (Long live Imane) at the airport.

Khelif has been the centre of a gender identity controversy. Her win over China’s Yang Liu led to intense debate and criticism, including comments from former US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. Trump said he would "keep men out of women's sports", while Musk and others joined the debate.

Khelif, along with Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, was previously disqualified from last year’s world championships due to gender eligibility issues. Despite this, both were allowed to compete in Paris. The International Boxing Association (IBA) claimed that Khelif and Lin had failed gender eligibility testing, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to participate.

In response to the online abuse she faced, Khelif has filed a complaint for cyberbullying, with her lawyer describing it as a "fight for justice".

The Algerian welterweight champion, who recently clinched gold at the Paris Olympics, took the opportunity to highlight the significant role of Algerian women in her success and society at large.

Imane's journey to Olympic gold has not been without its challenges. She faced intense scrutiny and gender questions from opponents, yet she remained steadfast.

On Friday, August 9, Khelif won the Olympics women's 66kg final against China's Yang Liu in a unanimous points decision, having been the focus of intense scrutiny in the French capital in the past fortnight.

"The answer [to critics] came through the result In every match, I wanted to show the strength and performance of women and Algerian women in particular. As for the fierce campaign I had to face, and you all know what it was like, praise be to God the Algerian people supported me. Praise be to God, we have restored Algeria's reputation and raised the Algerian flag in Paris, which is the most important thing. We brought joy to the Algerian people and restored Algerian women's reputation," Khelif said.

Khelif has also filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment, her lawyer announced on Saturday, August 10.

"The boxer Imane Khelif has decided to begin a new fight, a fight for justice, dignity and honour," Nabil Boudi said in a statement, saying Khelif had filed the complaint for "aggravated online harassment... to Paris prosecutors". He added: "The investigation will determine who was behind this misogynist, racist and sexist campaign, but will also have to concern itself with those who fed the online lynching."

Alongside Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who won the 57kg women's final on Saturday, Khelif was disqualified from last year's world championships due to failing gender eligibility tests. However, both were cleared to compete in Paris.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif secured her spot in the Olympic final on Tuesday, August 6 after winning her semi-final match at the Paris Games, guaranteeing at least a silver medal.

The victory came before a lively crowd at Roland Garros, which chanted her name throughout the bout.

Khelif defeated Thailand's 2023 world silver medallist Janjaem Suwannapheng by unanimous decision in the women’s 66kg category. “I am like all athletes, I am here to achieve my dream,” Khelif told AFP after the fight.

Khelif received a huge ovation as she entered Roland Garros, usually known for tennis, but now hosting Olympic boxing. The Algerian crowd, waving flags and shouting “Imane, Imane,” created an electrifying atmosphere.

During the bout, Khelif, who had a clear height advantage, overwhelmed Suwannapheng, who took a standing count in the third round.

After the fight, Khelif celebrated with a dance in the ring, drawing cheers from the crowd. She will face Yang Liu of China in the final, who won her semi-final against Taiwan's Chen Nien-chin.

"I am focusing on the competition and other things are not important. The important thing is that I am in the final now," Khelif said.

The 25-year-old light welterweight boxer showcased her prowess during the match on August 1, exchanging a few swift punches with Carini before landing a decisive blow that forced the Italian to drop out of her Olympic debut in tears. However, it wasn’t Khelif’s swift victory that made the headlines; rather, it was the questions surrounding her gender.

Khelif's father, Omar Khelif, has publicly defended his daughter amid the scrutiny. "My child is a girl. She was raised as a girl. She's a strong girl. I raised her to be hard-working and brave. She has a strong will to work and to train. The Italian opponent she faced was unable to defeat my daughter. Because my daughter was stronger and she was softer,” Omar Khelif is quoted by the AFP.

Khelif’s 5’11” frame towered over Carini’s 5’7” stature, and the bout, which lasted approximately 46 seconds, raised concerns about the Algerian's eligibility to fight at the Olympics. These concerns were amplified by Khelif's previous disqualification from the women’s world championships last year for failing gender eligibility tests.

In the aftermath of the match, Carini refused the customary handshake after Khelif was declared the winner. She has since apologised , stating, "It wasn't something I intended to do… Actually, I want to apologize to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke." Carini expressed her sadness over the controversy, telling the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, "All this controversy makes me sad."

What we know

What they said

"I am a fighter. My father taught me to be a warrior. When I am in the ring, I use that mindset, the mindset of a warrior, a winning mindset. This time I couldn’t make it. I didn’t lose tonight, I just surrendered with maturity,” Carini told reporters. Adding that "I'm out, my dream is over…I felt really sad, with a broken heart. It's not right for my Olympics to end here, it's not right for my dream to end here, because an athlete makes so many sacrifices. I'm not ashamed to say that I gave up, I'm not even afraid to go back to that ring." Ahead of the bout, IOC spokesman Mark Adams defended the body's decision for Paris 2024 saying, "This involves real people and we are talking about real people's lives here," he told reporters on Thursday. "They have lost and they have won against other women over the years." British author J.K. Rowling wrote on X that, "A young female boxer has just had everything she’s worked and trained for snatched away because you allowed a male to get in the ring with her. #Paris2024 will be forever tarnished by this brutal injustice.” Italy's right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Carini's bout against Khelif was not a fight among equals. "I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions. And not because you want to discriminate against someone, but to protect the right of female athletes to be able to compete on equal terms."

Mexico rejects Venezuela election results

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that Mexico will recognise the Venezuelan election result given by the electoral authority. The Peninsular reports that the Venezuelan President Maduro declared victory, but opposition claims of fraud have arisen. Mexico is waiting for the final vote count and detailed reports from Venezuela's National Electoral Council before making a final decision. The CNE stated that Maduro won re-election with 51.2 percent of the votes.

Rain forecasts

Mexico is experiencing increased rainfall due to a combination of seasonal monsoons, tropical waves, and cyclonic activity. Heavy rain is forecasted for various states, along with strong winds. The country has already surpassed its average rainfall for the year, with reduced drought conditions in many areas. Some states have benefitted more from the rainfall than others. High temperatures are also expected in certain regions, according to Mexico News Daily .

Boxing in Mexico

Female boxers in Mexico, inspired by Olympic contenders like Citlalli Ortiz and Fatima Herrara, are empowering themselves through the sport in a society still grappling with machismo. Traditional gender roles have confined women in the past, but with women like Ortiz making noise in the boxing scene, the mentality is changing. Young girls are looking up to these fighters as role models and are eager to follow in their footsteps. With the legacy of boxing running deep in Mexico, the country is becoming a powerhouse in the sport, particularly in women's boxing, Supersport reports.

Murder

A 12-year-old boy was killed on a Cancun beach by gunmen on jet skis, who were reportedly targeting a rival drug dealer. The incident is under investigation by Mexican officials, who believe the attackers arrived by sea and were involved in a dispute over drug sales. According to the ABC , the boy, who has not been publicly identified, was not believed to have been the intended target. He and his family were at the beach at the time of the shooting.

Temporary residency

Guatemala has granted temporary residency to 207 Mexican refugees, mostly children, who fled drug violence. They have 30 days of legal status and can request asylum if they choose. The refugees crossed the border into Guatemala to escape cartel violence in their communities. Organizations are providing support and donations to the families. The Mexican government has been urged to protect the communities from cartels. AP News reports that two powerful cartels have been battling for control of smuggling routes in the area, leading to multiple displacements.

This two-bedroom, one-bathroom house in Louisville, which has been converted into a museum, offers a glimpse into the early years of "The Greatest" when he was still known as Cassius Clay .

The property, currently listed on the market, includes two neighbouring homes. One has been transformed into a welcome centre and gift shop, while the other is intended for short-term rental.

The owners are asking for $1.5 million (£1.1 million) for all three properties. Co-owner George Bochetto stated that finding a buyer committed to preserving Ali's childhood home as a museum would be "the best possible outcome."

The museum opened shortly before Ali's death in 2016. Bochetto and his business partner renovated the house to reflect its appearance during Ali's childhood, using old photos to replicate the furnishings, appliances, artwork, and even the pink exterior from that era.

Ali lived in the home when he left for the 1960 Olympics in Rome, where he won a gold medal. This marked the beginning of a career that would make him one of the most recognisable figures in the world and a three-time heavyweight boxing champion.
