In a submission to the UN’s special rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, the Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) said the displacement followed Thai military actions in contested border areas and had persisted despite a ceasefire reached on December 27, 2025.

The committee said Cambodian families remained unable to go back to their homes because Thai troops continued to occupy parts of the border, actions it described as unlawful.

It alleged that civilian houses had been destroyed and access routes sealed off using shipping containers and barbed wire.

According to the CHRC, such measures violate provisions agreed during the third Special General Border Committee meeting, including guarantees to protect civilian property and facilitate the safe and dignified return of residents displaced by the fighting.

In its appeal to Paula Gaviria Betancur, the UN special rapporteur based in Geneva, the committee said the destruction of homes and seizure of civilian property amounted to serious breaches of international humanitarian law, citing the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights .

The statement warned that the humanitarian impact was falling disproportionately on vulnerable groups, with women, children and older people facing increased risks linked to poverty, interrupted schooling and reduced access to healthcare.

The CHRC called on the UN to raise the issue directly with Bangkok, press for an end to what it described as ongoing obstructions and demand the withdrawal of Thai forces from Cambodian territory.

It also sought international advocacy for reparations and compensation for those displaced.

The move comes as Cambodia increasingly turns to international legal mechanisms.

On Friday, the country unanimously approved a draft law to ratify the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a step that will place Phnom Penh within a global framework for resolving disputes under international law once the legislation is formally ratified and submitted to the UN.

In a letter to Thailand’s Second Army Area, a senior Cambodian officer said the blast occurred during routine clean-up operations at a military base on the Cambodian side of the frontier, near the Mum Bei, or Chong Bok, area.

Brig Gen Nid Narong, Deputy Chief of Staff of Cambodia’s Military Region 4 and chairman of the secretariat of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee, said troops had been burning rubbish collected during a base reorganisation when an unexploded munition detonated.

The incident took place at 7.27 a.m. on Tuesday in Preah Vihear province, an area that has long been sensitive because of its proximity to the disputed border.

According to the letter, a leftover DKZ munition was mixed in with the rubbish pile and exploded during the burning process, injuring two Cambodian soldiers, one seriously and one slightly.

The blast was loud enough to alarm Thai troops stationed nearby, prompting concerns that gunfire or shelling had resumed along the border, where tensions have periodically flared despite formal ceasefire agreements.

Cambodian officials said the clarification was issued to prevent any misunderstanding from escalating into a wider incident between the two militaries.

Nid expressed condolences over the injuries and stressed that the explosion took place within Cambodia’s sovereign territory, with no hostile intent towards Thailand.

He reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully and in accordance with international law, and said its forces continued to respect the ceasefire and related agreements.

These include documents signed on July 28 and October 26 last year, as well as a joint document from the third special meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee on December 27.

The Cambodian side said the priority now was to restore calm quickly and ensure peace, stability and safety for communities living along both sides of the border.

The compound was identified in Malai city in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, an area increasingly seen as a refuge for scam syndicates displaced from more heavily policed border zones, according to a report by the Bangkok Post .

Thai police believe the centre was established after recent joint operations tightened the net around known scam hubs closer to Thailand.

According to Pol. Lt. Gen. Jirabhob Bhuridej, deputy commissioner of Thailand’s Anti-Cyber Scam Centre (ACSC) and assistant national police chief, the site lies around 50 kilometres from Poipet, a border township opposite Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province.

Poipet has long been linked to illicit online operations targeting victims across the region and beyond.

The newly discovered centre is still partially under construction and comprises several two-storey buildings with clearly separated workspaces and living quarters.

Inside the compound, investigators believe there are workers of multiple nationalities, including Thais, Indians and Indonesians, many of whom may have been trafficked or coerced into scam work.

Supervisory roles, however, are thought to be dominated by Chinese nationals.

Between December 28 and January 3 alone, Thai police recorded 6,369 scam-related cases, according to figures released by the ACSC. Authorities warn that these numbers likely represent only a fraction of the true impact.

This latest case of scam centres comes against the backdrop of heightened tension between Thailand and Cambodia over border management and law enforcement cooperation.

Analysts say the row has complicated efforts to pursue suspects across jurisdictions. Thai officials argue that criminal groups are exploiting these frictions to evade arrest and rebuild their operations.

“The situation shows that scam operations are becoming more severe and complex, and no country should be a safe haven for them,” Jirabhob said.

Thailand and Cambodia agree to ceasefire after deadly border clashes

Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement on Saturday, December 27, to end nearly three weeks of intense fighting along their shared border that killed more than 100 people and displaced over half a million civilians. The truce, signed by Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha, took effect at noon local time and applies to all types of weapons, including attacks on civilians, infrastructure and military targets. Both sides agreed to freeze troop deployments, refrain from provocative actions, avoid spreading false information, and maintain open communication. The deal also provides for ASEAN observers to monitor implementation, while Thailand has committed to releasing 18 Cambodian soldiers within 72 hours if the ceasefire holds. The United Nations, China, Malaysia and the United States welcomed the agreement as a positive step toward restoring peace, with talks involving Thailand, Cambodia and China scheduled to take place in Yunnan.

Thailand accuses Cambodia of breaching ceasefire with drone activity

Thailand’s army has accused Cambodia of violating the newly signed ceasefire, claiming more than 250 unmanned aerial vehicles were detected flying from the Cambodian side on Sunday night, December 28. In a statement issued on December 29, the Royal Thai Army said the alleged activity constituted provocation and could force Thailand to reconsider the release of the 18 detained Cambodian soldiers. Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn described the incident as a minor issue related to drone flights observed by both sides along the border. The accusations came shortly after China and the United States praised the ceasefire as a hard-won breakthrough, amid longstanding tensions between the two neighbours that have periodically erupted into violence over disputed border areas.

Israeli-led dance festival in northern Thailand cancelled amid threats and vandalism

An Israeli-led series of electronic dance events in Pai, northern Thailand, has been cancelled after organisers reported online incitement, vandalism and mounting pressure from local authorities. The Loop Festival, organised by Israeli residents working with international collaborators, faced accusations on social media following its first event, alongside incidents in which promotional materials were burned, and equipment was destroyed or stolen. Despite holding a second event at an alternative venue, organisers said authorities later informed them that future parties would not be allowed to proceed. The founders said the cancellations resulted in significant financial losses and expressed concern over antisemitic rhetoric, while stating they did not blame local residents who felt threatened by the controversy.

Bangkok warns of higher PM2.5 pollution risk over New Year period

Bangkok’s Air Quality Information Centre has warned of an increased risk of PM2.5 pollution buildup between December 28 and January 1 due to weakening air ventilation. According to the updated outlook covering December 26, 2025, to January 3, 2026, air circulation is expected to be relatively good on December 26–27, before deteriorating from December 28–30 and remaining poor through New Year’s Day. Authorities said heavy traffic and outdoor activities could worsen pollution levels, particularly between 6:00 pm and 9:00 am in inner-city and downwind areas. Conditions are expected to improve from January 2–3. Residents, especially children and older people, were advised to limit outdoor activities during high-risk periods and monitor air quality.

Public access adjusted for New Year’s Day royal rites at Grand Palace

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announced that public access to pay final respects to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, at Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall will be suspended on January 1. Members of the public will instead be able to sign the book of condolences and pay respects in front of her portrait at the Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion from 8 am to 5 pm. Ticket sales for full tours of the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will be cancelled on New Year’s Day, though access to the Emerald Buddha Temple will remain open via a designated gate. Authorities said nearly 395,000 people have paid their respects since October 27.

While the agreement raised hopes of de-escalation, lingering mistrust shaped public sentiment.

Footage captured by Viory in Bangkok showed traffic flowing normally as people moved through the city, passing shopping centres and convenience stores, suggesting a return to everyday life even as uncertainty over the ceasefire lingered.

Several locals questioned whether the ceasefire would hold, citing previous breakdowns in relations between the two neighbours. Some expressed hope that the agreement would hold, while others voiced doubts rooted in past experience.

Visitors also weighed in on the development, with some stressing that any effort to end the fighting was positive. A visitor from South Korea described the ceasefire as a necessary first step towards peace , noting that conflict brings harm to all sides.

Thailand and Cambodia signed the ceasefire on Saturday after delegations met at a border checkpoint in Thailand’s Chanthaburi Province. The agreement followed weeks of escalating violence along the border, during which both countries reported military and civilian casualties.

The agreement was signed by Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and his Cambodian counterpart, with footage from the meeting showing the two officials exchanging the joint statement at the venue.

According to a statement released by Cambodia’s defence ministry, both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire effective from 12:00 p.m. local time (05:00 GMT) on December 27, 2025. The truce covers all types of weapons and prohibits attacks on civilians, civilian facilities and infrastructure, as well as military targets, across all affected areas.

The statement also said the two countries committed to maintaining their current troop positions, with no further movement by either side.

Tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border escalated earlier this month, leading to deadly clashes and mass displacement. Thailand reported that several soldiers and civilians were killed during evacuation efforts, while Cambodian authorities said at least 15 civilians were killed and 76 others injured. More than 422,000 people have been displaced by the violence , according to Cambodian figures.

The latest ceasefire follows a previous truce brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump , which was signed on October 26 after an earlier border crisis. Both governments later accused each other of violating that agreement, raising concerns about the fragility of efforts to restore lasting calm along the disputed border.

Police said the 46-year-old man was detained on Tuesday in Surin, a north-eastern province that hosts key military installations and lies close to the Thai-Cambodian frontier.

He was identified as Joshua Bryan, a US citizen, after hours of questioning by police, immigration and military intelligence officers.

According to security officials, Bryan was seen taking photographs near a military airport used as an operational base. Witnesses reported that he lingered along the perimeter, repeatedly using his mobile phone and focusing on sensitive areas of the facility.

When officers approached, police said the man attempted to evade them by fleeing into a nearby public park and hiding inside a public toilet. He was surrounded and later escorted to Surin City Police Station for questioning.

Investigators said Bryan refused to allow officers to examine his mobile phone, despite repeated requests. Police said he deflected questions and physically prevented access to the device, complicating efforts to establish what images or data had been recorded.

Senior officers, including the provincial police commander, led a multi-agency interrogation that stretched for several hours on Tuesday evening. Immigration officials and military intelligence officers were also present, reflecting the sensitivity of the case.

Authorities confirmed that Bryan had checked into a hotel in Surin one day earlier, though details of his travel route, length of stay and movements in Thailand were not disclosed. Police said they were not convinced by his initial claim that he was travelling alone.

The detention comes amid tightened security nationwide after Thai authorities warned of potential threats involving foreign nationals during the current border standoff with Cambodia. Police have increased surveillance around military sites and urged the public to report suspicious behaviour.

Immigration checks have also been stepped up at airports and land crossings, with closer coordination between police, the military and border agencies. Officials say the measures are intended to prevent espionage and other security-related offences.

By early evening, police said Bryan remained in custody as questioning continued. Authorities have not announced any formal charges, but indicated the investigation would hinge on determining his activities near the military airport and the contents of his phone.

Speaking from Phnom Penh on Sunday, ministry spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata accused Thailand of breaching a joint declaration and engaging in what she called war crimes and unlawful activities.

Socheata said Cambodia was calling on Thailand to immediately halt all hostile actions and withdraw its forces from Cambodian territory. She added that while some frontlines remained calm, Cambodian forces were on high alert due to continued Thai military activity near the Preah Vihear Temple and other surrounding areas. According to her statement, Thai forces initiated tank and infantry assaults in the area with artillery support, including what she described as the use of toxic gas and cluster bombs.

The spokesperson also stressed that Cambodia has consistently upheld its obligations under international law, particularly international humanitarian law. Her remarks came a day after Thailand’s Ministry of Defence said its forces had struck Cambodian positions in retaliation for attacks on Thai territory.

The renewed clashes follow rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border last week. Thailand reported nine soldiers killed and four civilian deaths during evacuations, while Cambodia said 11 civilians were killed and 74 were injured. The current ceasefire was originally brokered by US President Donald Trump and signed on 26 October after a previous border crisis, with both sides blaming each other for the latest outbreak of violence.

While Machado was recognised for her years of democratic advocacy, two high-profile agreements Trump brokered — between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and between Thailand and Cambodia — have unravelled almost as quickly as they were announced.

DR Congo and Rwanda

In Washington, Trump hosted a summit where the leaders of DR Congo and Rwanda signed what he hailed as a “historic” peace accord. But analysts quickly noted the document merely endorsed a June agreement that had already failed to halt the conflict.

Clashes were intensifying even ahead of the ceremony, with M23 rebels expanding their control in eastern DR Congo. Both Kinshasa and Kigali accused each other of violating ceasefire terms, and there was no public handshake between Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame, whose tense relations underscored the deal’s fragility.

Within days, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe refused to commit to any troop withdrawal, insisting Rwanda had none in DR Congo. This, despite UN experts saying Rwandan forces were effectively directing M23 operations.

On the ground , M23 seized major cities, artillery pounded eastern provinces, and residents fled into Burundi. Even as Trump praised the summit as “a great day,” rebel advances continued, and regional officials warned the deal’s collapse was a humiliation for Washington.

Thailand and Cambodia

A similar pattern emerged in Southeast Asia .

In July, Trump pushed Thailand and Cambodia into a border ceasefire . Bangkok agreed reluctantly; Phnom Penh openly welcomed US involvement.

But the truce unraveled within months. Clashes erupted after a Thai engineering team came under fire. Since then, Thai and Cambodian forces have traded artillery, rockets and air strikes along the border, prompting repeated evacuations of communities.

Thailand accused Cambodia of laying new landmines that maimed several soldiers, while refusing to release troops captured during the July clashes. Cambodia, meanwhile, portrayed itself as the aggrieved party and sought international support.

Domestic politics amplified tensions. Thailand’s military was given free rein to “finish the job,” while Cambodia’s leadership took actions that deepened mistrust, including leaking a sensitive phone call that toppled Thailand’s Shinawatra government.

With both sides showing no signs of stopping, it has become apparent that Trump-brokered ceasefire never addressed the root disputes.

Bangkok repeatedly said it was not ready for new diplomacy until Cambodia showed “sincerity,” leaving the agreement effectively dead.

Taken together, the DR Congo–Rwanda and Thai-Cambodian cases show a consistent pattern: Trump secured highly publicised signing ceremonies, but the underlying conflicts continued almost immediately.

It also raised questions about whether Trump’s rushed deals ever had a genuine chance at peace.

Analyst: Thailand-Cambodia clash alarming but unlikely to escalate

However, for political analyst Antonio Contreras, a former professor who also writes a column for a prominent newspaper in the Philippines, the situation is “worrying” but unlikely to escalate into a full-scale war.

“Thailand’s reported air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia sound alarming, and they are,” he said, noting that such confrontations between ASEAN neighbours are rare and increase the risk of miscalculation. He insisted, however, that “a full-scale regional war is still very unlikely.”

Contreras’ statement comes after Thailand confirmed on Monday that it had carried out air strikes on Cambodian positions after accusing Phnom Penh of breaching a ceasefire brokered earlier this year.

One Thai soldier was killed and eight others wounded, prompting the Air Force to deploy aircraft “to deter and reduce Cambodia's military capabilities,” according to a Thai army statement.

Cambodia rejected the accusations and said Thailand launched dawn attacks at two locations following “provocative actions.” Its defence ministry insisted Cambodian forces had “not responded,” even as three civilians were reported seriously wounded. Former leader Hun Sen called Thailand the “aggressors” and urged Cambodian troops to exercise restraint.

Contreras stressed that the clashes remain geographically limited. “The conflict is localized,” he said, explaining that the fighting is confined to long-contested border areas with a history of flare-ups. “There is no sign of nationwide mobilization from either side.”

He also pointed out limitations of both Thailand's and Cambodia’s militaries and economies.

“Neither military is built for prolonged interstate war,” he said. Both armies are primarily oriented toward internal security and border defence, making extended conflict “neither feasible nor desirable.”

“Economies, especially Thailand’s, can’t afford escalation,” he added, noting that tourism is a vital component of Thailand’s economy and that reports of “air strikes” alone can alarm visitors.

Regional and international actors are also likely to act to prevent escalation. Contreras noted incentives for the United States , China, and neighbouring governments to pressure both sides into dialogue. ASEAN Chair Anwar Ibrahim has already urged “maximum restraint.”

Contreras said urgent diplomatic intervention is needed, but the risk of a full-scale regional war remains low.

“This is concerning and needs quick diplomatic intervention, but a debilitating Thailand–Cambodia war that destabilizes the region is still highly unlikely. Economic pressure, ASEAN dynamics, and political reality all point toward de-escalation rather than war,” he said.

Border crossings shut as clashes intensify in Myanmar’s Karen State

Thailand has closed several border crossings in Tak province after heavy fighting escalated on November 30 between the Karen National Union’s Brigade 6 and Myanmar military forces in Myawaddy, opposite Mae Sot. Both sides exchanged sustained 60mm and 120mm mortar fire and drone-dropped explosives through the night. Five mortar rounds landed in Thailand, injuring two Myanmar nationals, though no direct damage to Thai communities was reported. The Naresuan Task Force ordered a seven-day shutdown of crossing points, with only the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 1 remaining open. Thai troops and border police have been deployed and warned they will retaliate if further fire crosses into Thailand.

Anutin confirms House dissolution by January 31

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Monday that Parliament will be dissolved by January 31, 2026, reaffirming the government’s timeline and denying rumours of delaying tactics tied to a no-confidence motion. He dismissed claims of mismanagement over the Hat Yai floods, saying the government acted decisively to assist affected communities and criticism was based on misinformation. Anutin said politics should pause during the recovery effort and warned that dissolving the House amid an emergency would hinder aid. Responding to a NIDA poll showing his support at 15% in the South, he said he was satisfied with the figure and not competing with Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva.

PM2.5 hits hazardous levels in 48 Bangkok districts

Bangkok recorded hazardous air pollution levels on Monday morning, with PM2.5 concentrations in the red zone across 48 districts, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency. Data from its Check Foon app at 6 a.m. showed five provinces nationwide in the red category and 41 in the orange level, where pollution begins to affect vulnerable groups. A three-hour forecast predicts persistent red and orange conditions. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported an average PM2.5 reading of 45 µg/m³ at 7am, above the national safety limit of 37.5 µg/m³. Authorities warned dust levels may worsen and urged residents to wear protective masks.

Anutin sets two-week deadline to restore Hat Yai after flood crisis

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Hat Yai has entered its post-flood recovery phase, with power, water and clean-up operations being accelerated to enable residents to return home quickly. After meeting business leaders on November 30, he said utilities are being restored and solid waste removal mobilised with support from military, government and private machinery. The Provincial Electricity Authority has been ordered to fix household electrical damage urgently. Anutin set a target of seven days for residents to move back and 14 days to fully clean the city, adding that officials have the authority to hire contractors to speed debris removal.

Second Army to sue over fake claims of Cambodian troop incursion

The Second Army Area has denied social-media rumours that Cambodian soldiers crossed into Thai territory and seized land around In Sri cliff in Ban Kruat district, Buri Ram, saying field checks found no evidence of any incursion. Border Patrol Police Company 216 and local officials inspected the remote site on Monday and reported no troop movements, terrain changes or construction activity. Satellite imagery also showed no sign of Cambodian military presence. Authorities said the area remains dense forest and poses no threat to border communities. The army is preparing legal action under the Computer Crime Act against those who posted the false claims.

Cambodia starts withdrawing heavy weapons from Thai border after peace deal

Cambodia has begun pulling back heavy weapons from its border with Thailand, marking the first phase of implementing the peace agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Defence Ministry spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said the withdrawal began late on October 26, with ASEAN observers inspecting returning armoured vehicles in Siem Reap the following morning. The move follows the joint declaration signed by Prime Ministers Hun Manet and Anutin Charnvirakul, witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian leader Anwar Ibrahim.

General suspended for pistol-whipping woman in traffic dispute

Cambodia’s National Military Police have suspended Brigadier General Chhim Chhem and referred his case to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court after he pistol-whipped a woman during a traffic altercation. Chhem is charged with “intentional acts of violence” under Article 217 of the Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of six months to three years. Authorities said Chhem attacked 20-year-old Pen Sokna after she blocked his car and demanded $5 in compensation for damage to her motorcycle. He has admitted guilt and pledged to compensate the victim.

Cambodia to scrap all tariffs on US goods under landmark trade deal

Cambodia will remove all tariffs on US industrial and agricultural products under a new trade agreement announced by the White House, granting American exporters unprecedented market access. The deal, signed alongside the ASEAN Summit, commits Cambodia to eliminate duties on US food, machinery and manufactured goods, while Washington will maintain a 19% reciprocal tariff, except for certain products that will face none. Phnom Penh also pledged to cut non-tariff barriers, recognise US safety and agricultural standards, and bolster labour, environmental and intellectual property protections. President Trump hailed the pact as “a forward-looking and tough trade deal” benefiting American workers and farmers.

Four foreigners arrested in Siem Reap over online ‘love scam’

Cambodian authorities have arrested four foreign nationals in Siem Reap for allegedly running a cryptocurrency “love scam” targeting victims abroad. The joint operation, carried out on October 24 by provincial police and prosecutors, led to the arrest of three Chinese men — Xiao Song, Han Jiajia and Qin Cilong — and a Vietnamese woman, Luong Thi Que, at a rented villa in Sala Kanseng Village. Officers seized computers, phones and other evidence. The suspects admitted to posing as online romantics to defraud victims. Officials said the arrests form part of Cambodia’s wider crackdown on technology-based crime.

Cop killed in Kampong Thom drug raid

A police officer was killed and another seriously injured after a drug dealer opened fire with an AK-47 during a crackdown in Kampong Thom province on October 23. The shooting occurred in Bek Chan village, Taing Kork district, when suspect Thorn Dina, 29, and an accomplice opened fire on officers, killing Lieutenant Colonel Huon Saway and injuring Lieutenant Colonel Tim Channy. The suspects fled on a motorbike toward Kampong Cham province. Police have launched a manhunt.

Thailand and Cambodia sign border ‘peace deal’ brokered by Trump

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to halt border hostilities and release 18 detained soldiers under a “peace deal” signed on Sunday and witnessed by US President Donald Trump at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Trump hailed the accord, signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian leader Hun Manet, as “an incredible job for humanity.” The joint declaration commits both nations to withdraw heavy weapons, remove landmines and resolve disputes peacefully. Trump, who credited US mediation for averting further conflict, also announced upcoming trade and minerals agreements with the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

Thailand begins year-long funeral for former queen Sirikit

Thailand began a year-long funeral for former queen Sirikit on Sunday, as mourners gathered in Bangkok to pay respects to the “Mother of the Nation.” The 93-year-old royal, mother of King Vajiralongkorn and wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, died on Friday after years of illness. Her body was moved from Chulalongkorn Hospital to the Grand Palace, where it will lie in state for a year before cremation. Citizens have been asked to wear muted colours and suspend celebrations for 90 days. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul delayed his ASEAN trip to attend the initial ceremonies.

Anutin asserts authority to dissolve parliament early

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reaffirmed his right to dissolve Parliament at any time, hinting that he could do so before the agreed January deadline. Speculation has mounted that Anutin may call an early election to pre-empt a possible censure motion against his minority coalition. While the constitutional amendment process has advanced past its first reading, Anutin said, “If that day comes, let the people decide.”

Pheu Thai may choose non-Shinawatra leader after Paetongtarn’s exit

The opposition Pheu Thai Party will hold a general assembly on October 31 to elect a new leader following Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s resignation amid a credibility slump tied to her leaked phone call with Cambodian leader Hun Sen. Party elections director Suriya Juangroongruangkit said the next leader “may not be a Shinawatra,” but denied rumours he would take the post, saying he is “too old” and prefers new-generation leadership. He dismissed reports that his family pressured Paetongtarn to quit, calling them “completely untrue,” and vowed to restore the party’s strength ahead of the next general election.

Thailand urges regional action on online scams at ASEAN Summit

Thailand is calling for stronger regional cooperation to combat online scams and cybercrime , as well as to deepen economic ties, ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28. Bolbongse Vangphaen, the director-general of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, said Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and fellow leaders will reaffirm their commitment to peace, digital growth and sustainability amid global instability. Thailand, which chairs ASEAN’s digital economy negotiations, is pushing the “Bangkok Declaration Against Online Scams” and a joint declaration on cybercrime.

He presented himself as the visionary behind the Prince Holding Group, a sprawling conglomerate with interests in luxury real estate, finance, and consumer goods.

His portfolio included high-end hotels, ambitious property developments, and a collection of London estates reportedly worth over $130 million. To the public, Chen was a symbol of modern Asian entrepreneurship and a man who built billions through luxury and innovation.

But that narrative has collapsed.

In October 2025, the United States and the United Kingdom jointly launched one of the largest cybercrime crackdowns in history, accusing Chen and his associates of running a transnational criminal network that profited from human trafficking, online scams, and crypto fraud.

More than 146 individuals and companies were sanctioned, and assets worth billions, including real estate and digital currencies , were frozen. Investigators traced the flow of money from fake job ads, romance scams, and crypto schemes back to Chen’s network in Cambodia and beyond.

Authorities allege that behind the façade of luxury developments and high-finance operations lies a vast web of “scam compounds” across Southeast Asia. Trafficked workers from across the region were forced to run online fraud under threats of violence, generating billions of dollars in illicit profits.

Job hunt turns manhunt: Dozens of South Koreans missing in Cambodia amid job scam

Officials say around 80 South Koreans remain unaccounted for, part of a larger group of 330 who went missing or were allegedly held against their will in Cambodia this year.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that it is still unable to verify the whereabouts of those 80 people and is comparing its records with police data to ensure accuracy. A team led by the second vice-foreign minister is being sent to Cambodia this week to coordinate search and rescue efforts with local authorities.

The disappearances mark a sharp escalation in cases involving South Koreans in Cambodia. Parliamentary data shows that only a handful of incidents were recorded in 2023, but the number surged tenfold in 2024 and grew even further this year.

Lawmakers say the majority of victims were misled by online job postings offering unusually high salaries, only to be coerced into fraudulent work after arrival.

Many victims are believed to have been taken to compounds run by organised criminal groups. Once inside, they are forced to run online scams targeting foreign victims, sometimes including fellow South Koreans. Those who refuse to cooperate are often subjected to violence , confinement, or extortion, according to officials familiar with the cases.

The issue drew national outrage after the death of a young South Korean student in Cambodia, who investigators say was kidnapped and tortured before he died. His case has fuelled demands for stronger government protection and more decisive action against criminal operations abroad.

President Lee Jae Myung has ordered urgent measures to safeguard citizens, describing the situation as deeply distressing and warning that the number of victims is “not small.” He told ministers that the government must act quickly to reunite families and prevent further incidents.

South Korean authorities say they are also seeking the release of about 60 nationals currently detained by Cambodian police and are believed to have been forced to participate in illegal schemes run by larger criminal networks.

In response, the Foreign Ministry is tightening travel restrictions to parts of Cambodia known for scam activity. Officials are also considering raising the country’s travel warning and urging job seekers to be wary of overseas offers that appear unusually generous.

The crisis comes amid a regional surge in online fraud operations, many of them based in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Thousands of people from across Asia have been trafficked into such compounds, where they are compelled to work under harsh conditions .

Why agriculture still matters in Southeast Asia and where it’s heading

In Southeast Asia, agriculture, forestry, and fishing remain foundational to national economies, contributing 8% to 16.6% of GDP in 2024, depending on the country, even as their shares have declined in recent years.

The data in the image shows Cambodia at 16.6%, Vietnam at 11.9%, Myanmar at 20.8%, the Philippines at 9.1%, Indonesia at 12.6%, Thailand at 8.7%, and Malaysia at 8.2%. Some of these figures represent decreases from 2021; for example, Cambodia saw a drop of 6.2 percentage points, and Vietnam declined by 3.0 points.

These numbers come in line with World Bank data on the broader measure of agriculture, forestry, and fishing’s share of GDP globally.

As Southeast Asian economies grow and diversify, the share of agriculture in GDP often falls. That’s natural in development: the industry and services sectors tend to expand faster than farming. The image confirms that trend: many countries show declines between 2021 and 2024.

This doesn’t mean agriculture is unimportant, far from it. It remains vital for food security, rural employment, and exports. What the shrinking share often signals is that productivity improvements in nonfarm sectors are outpacing gains in agriculture.

A report from ISEAS notes that despite agriculture’s role in regional food systems and exports, it faces increasing pressures from trade volatility, land use change, and climate stress.

Climate change adds urgency to the picture. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), in Southeast Asia, more than 100 million smallholder farmers depend on farming, yet they face increased heat, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather.

Between 2008 and 2018, natural disasters and climate extremes caused roughly USD 21 billion in production losses across the region.

These environmental pressures may further erode agriculture’s share of GDP if farmers can’t adapt, threatening livelihoods and food supply.

The World Bank is responding to these pressures by directing more financing to agribusiness and agriculture. In 2024, it announced it would double its agri-finance and agribusiness commitments to USD 9 billion annually by 2030.

This pivot aims to support technology, infrastructure , climate resilience, and better value chains in food systems.

One real-world example of agriculture’s power: In the Philippines, the sector rebounded sharply in 2025, driving the country’s fastest annual growth in some time. According to Reuters, the Philippines posted 5.5% year-on-year growth in Q2 2025, largely led by a 7% increase in agricultural output.

What led to Thailand's indefinite border closure with Cambodia

The unanimous decision , announced on September 26 by the chiefs of Thailand’s armed forces, also includes building fences and reinforcing patrols along the 817-kilometre frontier. General Songwit Noonphukdi, Chief of Defence Forces, said the closure would remain until Cambodia is “no longer deemed a threat to national security.”

The move follows violent confrontations earlier this month in which Thai forces clashed with Cambodian demonstrators near Sa Kaeo province.

Cambodian officials said at least 23 of their nationals were injured, while Thailand reported injuries to five of its officers. Phnom Penh has accused Bangkok of violating its territory, escalating tensions despite a fragile ceasefire brokered in July.

The shutdown threatens $3 billion in annual cross-border trade and leaves tens of thousands of Cambodian migrant workers stranded. It also risks destabilising ASEAN’s efforts to mediate, with both the United States and China urging restraint.

Pressure is rising from outside as well. The UN Security Council called an emergency meeting in July, with all 15 members calling for restraint. Norway, Pakistan, and Russia issued new pleas, and ASEAN’s General Border Committee will meet in October with hopes of finding a way forward. However, with Cambodia reaching out to the ICJ and Thailand pushing for direct talks instead, any solution still feels far off.

Border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia, rooted in century-old territorial ambiguities near temple sites such as Preah Vihear, have flared repeatedly, most recently between 2008 and 2011.

GDP forecast revised downward

Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) forecast has been revised downward , with growth expected to remain below 5% next year. The adjustment reflects both global and domestic economic challenges, particularly those affecting exports. Analysts caution that these pressures may pose additional hurdles for the Thai economy, which is still recovering from the effects of the pandemic. According to a report from the news outlet เดลินิวส์ (Daily News), economic authorities are closely monitoring the situation and preparing measures to support growth.

Malaysia facilitates Thailand-Cambodia border talks

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ruled out armed conflict over the Ambalat Block dispute with Indonesia, assuring it will be resolved diplomatically. Speaking in Jakarta on July 29, 2025, he said he had discussed the matter with President Prabowo Subianto, stressing peaceful resolution over war. His comments come amid rising regional tensions after the recent Thailand-Cambodia border clashes. Despite opposition pressure for a tougher stance, Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to negotiation.

Thailand aids farmers in selling surplus longan

Facing a projected surplus of over 1 million tonnes of longan in 2025, the Thai government is collaborating with the private sector to support farmers amid declining prices. The Ministry of Commerce is managing 151,000 tonnes through exports, domestic sales, and processing. Initiatives include exporting 15,000 tonnes, promoting local consumption via the Thai Fruit Festival, CSR-driven purchases, subsidised shipping, vending machine sales, and global outreach through 58 trade offices.

Two storms approaching northeast

Northeast Thailand is preparing for two storms expected to hit the region this September, according to weather forecasts. Local authorities have begun implementing emergency measures to protect residents and reduce potential damage. The storms are forecasted to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, raising the risk of floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. Communities have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official guidance.

Thailand’s green tourism sets sustainability standard

On July 29, 2025, Thailand unveiled the Green Tourism Collections , featuring 20 eco-friendly travel routes across 10 designated Green Cities, including Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Bangkok. Developed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the initiative aims to align with European sustainability standards and cater to growing demand for low-impact travel, especially from EU and U.S. tourists. The routes promote environmental responsibility, cultural authenticity, and support for local businesses. Spanning both urban and rural areas, they encourage sustainable tourism practices while preserving Thailand’s natural and cultural heritage, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Tourism Goals.

Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol has praised U.S. President Donald Trump as the “President of Peace,” calling for him to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize following his intervention in the ongoing border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand .

The two Southeast Asian nations agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday, July 29, after five days of deadly clashes along their shared border, which left at least 43 people dead on both sides and displaced hundreds.

The breakthrough came during high-level talks brokered in Malaysia, where President Trump reportedly played a central mediating role. Both Thailand and Cambodia had been actively courting the U.S. leader as they sought to secure favourable trade agreements and avoid steep tariffs threatened by Washington.

The truce marks a significant de-escalation in a conflict that had threatened to spiral into a wider regional crisis. Details of the ceasefire agreement have not been fully disclosed, but observers say it includes a withdrawal of troops from contested areas and the establishment of a joint monitoring mechanism.

The U.S. and Qatar will finalise a deal next week for Qatar to donate a Boeing 747-8 jet to the U.S. Air Force for future use as Air Force One, according to the Washington Post .
Qatar, though small, has become a major diplomatic force, dubbed the “diplomatic capital of the world” by The Guardian ’s Nesrine Malik.
“We have seen very positive development and results that would augur well for Cambodia and Thailand,” Anwar said as he stood alongside the two leaders. He added, “This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security.” Hun Manet said he had “a very good meeting and very good result that we hope to stop immediately the fighting that have caused many lives lost.” He also praised Trump’s “decisive” role in facilitating the talks and expressed hope that the agreement would lead to the “rebuilding of trust and confidence” between the two nations.

The clashes, involving small arms fire, artillery exchanges, and reported Thai airstrikes, erupted near the disputed Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple along the border.

By Saturday, July 26, around 3,000 Thai evacuees had sought refuge at Surindra Rajabhat University in Surin. Evacuees were seen resting on the floors of the university hall as volunteers and uniformed officers distributed food and provided support.

"We had to evacuate our people for their safety. This formula is the only centre that welcomes people in Phanom Drak District. All assistance is going well. Just now I was satisfied with the help. As for the shortages, we will follow up later," Samat, a volunteer from the evacuation team, said.

"My house is located on the border. Between the border and my house, the distance is only 3 kilometres, so I had to come here. I feel homesick, and I am worried about my family because my father is still at home," Ratana, a resident, shared concerns.

The conflict stems from a territorial dispute dating back to the 1900s. In response to the latest escalation, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), proposed a ceasefire on Friday, July 25. On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the leaders of both countries had agreed to work toward a ceasefire.

Malaysia’s foreign minister confirmed on Sunday that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed for Malaysia to serve as a mediator in the dispute.

Earlier in July, Thailand’s Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra following allegations of ethical violations. A leaked phone call between Paetongtarn and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, in which she reportedly discussed the border conflict and expressed personal support, raised questions regarding propriety and national interest.

This comes as the country intensifies efforts to crack down on online crime.

The arrests were part of a sweeping operation launched after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet warned security forces and the military to act swiftly against cybercriminal networks or risk losing their jobs.

Between June 14 and 15, police raided two buildings in the capital, Phnom Penh, arresting 149 Vietnamese nationals, three Chinese citizens, and 85 Cambodians.

In a separate operation in Sihanoukville, a coastal city known as a hotspot for scam centres, officers detained another 63 Vietnamese and seized over 50 computers.

The raids come amid growing concerns over Southeast Asia’s role in the global scam industry. The United Nations has described the region as "ground zero" for internet scam operations, which are estimated to defraud social media users of up to US$40 billion a year.

Many of the workers in these centres are believed to be victims themselves, trafficked or tricked into taking the jobs under false promises.

Human rights groups say they are often held against their will, forced to work long hours and denied basic freedoms.

The Prime Minister’s directive, released publicly this week, made clear that any officer failing to take action would face dismissal.

Cambodia has previously deported foreign nationals caught in similar operations.

In March, the government sent home 119 Thais who were among 230 people arrested during cyber scam raids near the Thai border.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime warned earlier this year that the scam industry is no longer limited to Southeast Asia .

It said organised criminal groups have started building similar operations in other parts of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, South America, and some Pacific islands .

Whitehouse, in an exclusive interview with Global South World, warned that African youth, particularly English-speaking job seekers, are being increasingly targeted by traffickers linked to scam compounds.

He revealed that his long-standing engagement with Cambodia began over a decade ago through his collaboration with exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

“I helped him to write his English-language autobiography, which was published in 2013,” Whitehouse said. “Sam Rainsy is a former finance minister of Cambodia in the 1990s."

Whitehouse, now a freelance journalist with a special focus on Southeast Asia, believes Cambodia’s cybercrime industry represents a new phase of long-standing state corruption. “Back in the 1990s, corruption took the form primarily of illegal logging,” he says. “These days, it’s more about cyber scams being more profitable and far less labour-intensive, which, it's fair to say, make money much faster, in much larger quantities,” he noted.

“There is a large body of evidence that the same ruling elite is now being supported by the receipts of cybercrime,” he added.

Whitehouse traced the rapid rise of scam compounds to the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted tourism and left Chinese-run casinos in Cambodia idle.

“COVID-19 made it impossible for these casinos to operate. So what happened is that those casinos were repurposed… into what today are cyber scam compounds,” he explained. “This process has been quite well documented.”

He cited reports from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, as well as a recent Amnesty International publication, both detailing how these facilities have transformed into heavily guarded centres where trafficked victims are forced to defraud people online.

According to reports by Reuters , Human rights group Amnesty International accused Cambodia’s government on Thursday, June 26, of "deliberately ignoring" abuses by cybercrime gangs that have trafficked people from across the world, including children, into slavery at brutal scam compounds.

Amnesty said its findings revealed a "pattern of state failures" that allowed the billion-dollar industry to flourish, including failures to investigate human rights abuses, identify and assist victims, and regulate security companies and tools of torture.

“They are almost without exception sealed. You can’t walk in and out — especially you can’t walk out. They often use barbed wire and electric fences to keep people in,” Whitehouse said.

Africa in the crosshairs

Initially, the scam networks exploited Chinese-speaking victims. But as operations expanded, traffickers sought English speakers — and began targeting Africa.

“Now [they] include pretty much anywhere where there are English-speaking people,” said Whitehouse. “That certainly includes the English-speaking countries of Africa. If there are young people who need a job… those are the type of people the scammers are looking to recruit.”

He identified East African countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Mozambique as particularly vulnerable, citing logistical ease of travel and the influence of nearby trafficking hubs such as Dubai.

Francophone summit raises questions

Whitehouse also criticised the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) for choosing Cambodia to host its next summit.

“The danger with inviting a host of leaders from the Francophone world is that it legitimises the location as a safe, secure, legitimate place to do business and to work,” he warned. “That’s a dangerous signal for people in Africa… who may be tempted to take up job offers there, which may not be real.”

He emphasised that African governments attending the summit should be fully briefed on Cambodia’s cybercrime problem to avoid inadvertently endorsing a country linked to human trafficking and financial scams.

“There should be space for civil society in Cambodia to be represented at the summit,” he said. “Otherwise, you're simply going to get the government narrative.”

Although the U.S. has sanctioned entities like Huione, a conglomerate allegedly linked to the Cambodian government, Whitehouse believes the global response remains piecemeal.

“There’s obviously some awareness of the issue, and some actions have been taken, but they are quite piecemeal. There’s a lot more that needs to be done,” he said.

That includes raising awareness at home. “Governments everywhere, and certainly including African governments, need to do more to warn people about the dangers of travelling to Southeast Asia to take up a job that you don't really know about.”

Why Thailand is cutting off Cambodia’s internet

The directive, issued by Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), aims to disrupt cross-border scam networks exploiting Thai citizens, CTN News reports.

The move follows rising concern over online fraud schemes operated from Poipet, a Cambodian town bordering Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province.

“This is a big step to protect Thai citizens from scammers,” said NBTC Deputy Secretary-General Trairat Viriyasirikul at a press conference.

Under the new regulations, telecom companies have been directed to terminate all data and voice services within 15 days in border areas, particularly near the Khlong Luek crossing. Internet access will be restricted in inland towns, with telcos also required to submit SIM card sales data every 15 days and justify any cross-border services with detailed documentation.

The decision comes in response to the growing threat of transnational cybercrime, which Thai police say has declined slightly since enforcement began. Officials, however, note limited cooperation from Cambodian authorities. “We have identified major scam hubs in Poipet, but Cambodia has done little to intervene,” said Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, inspector-general of the Royal Thai Police.

International concerns over Cambodia’s role

An Amnesty International report released on June 26 accuses Cambodia of allowing its territory to become a haven for organised cybercrime. The 18-month investigation revealed that many scam centres, of which 53 were identified in the country, operate like detention facilities, guarded with razor wire and armed personnel, with many victims trafficked from abroad, who have faced forced labour, torture, and abuse.

“Cambodia is allowing a billion-dollar shadow economy to flourish,” said Amnesty Secretary-General Agnes Callamard. The report estimates that Cambodia’s scam industry generates over $12.5 billion annually, nearly half of the country’s GDP.

One survivor, an 18-year-old Thai woman named Lisa, was promised a hotel job but instead was trafficked to Phnom Penh and beaten for trying to escape. “They told me they’d keep beating me until I stopped screaming,” she recalled.

Diplomatic fallout

Cambodia has remained silent on both Amnesty’s findings and Thailand’s internet shutdown. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Hun Manet set up a cybercrime task force, but its actions have been limited. Critics say powerful elites, including Cambodian politicians, are complicit in or benefit from the scam economy.

With over 200,000 people believed to be trafficked into scam networks across Myanmar and Cambodia, international pressure is mounting. The U.S. and China have both urged Phnom Penh to act, but few arrests or closures have followed.

The move, which began on June 23, comes as both countries take measures in response to a dispute over a contested area where a Cambodian soldier was killed in May.

According to Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, only people with essential needs, including students, patients, and traders, will be allowed to cross land borders.

She added that the restrictions aim to stop travellers heading to Cambodian casinos but are expected to affect all tourist traffic.

“We must protect our country’s interests and prevent any activities that could be used against us,” Paetongtarn said.

The Thai military confirmed that the restrictions apply at all land border points in five provinces bordering Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Cambodia has cut some Thai internet services and stopped importing fuel and electricity from Thailand.

The country previously relied on Thailand for about a third of its fuel supply.

Thailand is also looking into broader sanctions to target cybercrime networks allegedly operating from Cambodia.

Paetongtarn said Thailand may block exports linked to scam centres and will work with other countries to clamp down on criminal activity in the region.

Earlier this year, Thailand took similar steps against scam operations in Myanmar.

The dogs, trained by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), will work with a Special Intervention Unit based in the capital, Phnom Penh, to support police operations targeting illegal drugs.

The move comes as Cambodian authorities face growing challenges linked to drug crime, both within the country and across the region.

Lieutenant General Khoeng Sarath, head of the Anti-Drug Department, observed the dogs in action on June 18 and urged handlers to ensure the animals are kept healthy, well-fed and regularly trained.

The five dogs currently deployed are part of a larger program launched earlier this year.

In June, 20 national police officers completed a canine training course at CMAC’s institute in Kampong Chhnang province, qualifying them as official handlers. CMAC then donated ten trained dogs to the National Police.

The project is supported by a memorandum of understanding between the National Police and CMAC, signed in January, which also covers training in demining and explosive detection.

Officials say the programme will improve public safety and strengthen Cambodia’s capacity to address drug trafficking.

CMAC, which has previously trained dogs for mine detection and peacekeeping, now aims to use its expertise to support domestic law enforcement and international cooperation.

In the first five months of 2025, Cambodian authorities reported more than 4,100 drug cases and seized over two tonnes of narcotics . More than 10,000 people have been arrested in connection with these offences.

The Cambodian government has described drug crime as a serious national concern and says it is committed to using every available tool, including trained dogs, to disrupt illegal networks.

Her main coalition partner has quit, and calls are mounting for her to resign or announce an election, throwing the kingdom into a fresh round of political instability as it seeks to boost its spluttering economy and avoid US President Donald Trump's swingeing trade tariffs.

The conservative Bhumjaithai party pulled out on Wednesday, saying Paetongtarn's conduct in the leaked call had wounded the country and the army's dignity. As pressure grew on Thursday, Paetongtarn, the daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's most influential but controversial modern politician, apologised at a press conference alongside military chiefs and senior figures from her Pheu Thai party.

"I would like to apologise for the leaked audio of my conversation with a Cambodian leader, which has caused public resentment," Paetongtarn told reporters.

In the call, Paetongtarn is heard discussing an ongoing border dispute with Hun Sen, who stepped down as Cambodian prime minister in 2023 after four decades but still wields considerable influence.

She addresses the veteran leader as "uncle" and refers to the Thai army commander in the country's northeast as her opponent, a remark that sparked fierce criticism on social media .

The loss of Bhumjaithai's 69 MPs left Paetongtarn with barely enough votes to scrape a majority in parliament, and a snap election looks a clear possibility barely two years after the last one in May 2023. Two other coalition parties, the United Thai Nation and the Democrat Party, will hold meetings to discuss the situation later on Thursday.

Paetongtarn will be hoping her apology and show of unity with the military are enough to persuade them to stay on board. Losing either would likely mean the end of Paetongtarn's government , and either an election or a bid by other parties to stitch together a new coalition.

Under the new guidelines, employees may work extra hours during busy periods or for special tasks, but only if they agree to do so voluntarily.

Forced overtime or threats of punishment are not allowed under the new directive.

Although the regulations do not set a maximum for overtime hours, the Labour Law limits total working hours to 10 per day, unless there is a disaster.

Workers asked to work on public holidays must also agree voluntarily, and they are still entitled to their regular pay for the day.

In cases of emergency repairs or urgent work, employers can suspend employees’ weekly days off for up to two days per month.

The same rule applies to weather-related disruptions, but affected workers must receive alternative days off within 30 days.

These measures apply to sectors like agriculture, construction, street cleaning, and inland water transport, especially those operating in open-air environments.

The new rules also confirm pay rates for overtime: 1.5 times the regular wage during the day and double the rate at night or on rest days.

Employees working at night must be provided with transport or suitable housing after work.

Employers must get approval from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training before scheduling any overtime, holiday work, or rest day suspensions.

They must submit full details, including reasons, staff numbers, and signed consent from a majority of the workers.

Failing to meet these conditions can lead to fines of up to $840 per offence.

The world has slowly grown to pay attention to only two religions: Christianity and Islam. These two religions have 2.3 billion and 1.9 billion followers, respectively, globally.

Yet, the Buddhist population seems to be catching up quickly. The religion boasts a global population of about 500 million followers and it's the fourth largest religion in the world.

China ranks number 1 in total number of Buddhists — over 254 million — which represents only 18.3% of its population. This is due to China’s vast population base and the presence of many other religious and philosophical traditions, including Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Islam.

Nonetheless, China is home to a rich history of Mahayana Buddhism, which deeply influences its temples, art , and monastic practices.

In contrast, Thailand (66.1 million, 92.6%) and Cambodia (15.7 million, 96.8%) rank as the most intensely Buddhist societies in the world by proportion.

In these nations, Theravāda Buddhism is not just a religion — it's a central part of national identity, education, and daily life. Monastic life remains highly respected, and many young men enter monasteries temporarily as a rite of passage.

Japan (41.4 million Buddhists) and South Korea (10.9 million) reflect a more syncretic approach. In both countries, Buddhism coexists with Shintoism (in Japan) and Christianity (in Korea). Many individuals participate in Buddhist rituals while identifying culturally rather than exclusively religiously.

Though Buddhism originated in India in the 6th century BCE, it now accounts for just 0.7% of India’s population. Still, India remains spiritually significant, home to sacred pilgrimage sites such as Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar. The modern resurgence of Buddhism in India has been driven in part by the Dalit Buddhist movement, influenced by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Cambodia has turned to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to help resolve four border disputes with Thailand, after talks between the two countries ended without agreement.

The announcement followed a two-day meeting in Phnom Penh of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), a body set up to negotiate border issues.

Cambodian officials said they would take the disputes regarding the Emerald Triangle and three ancient temples, Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Toch, and Ta Kwai, to the UN’s top court, even though Thailand has objected to this approach.

Cambodia's Minister in charge of Border Affairs, Lam Chea, told the Thai side that the decision was based on a desire for a fair and lasting legal solution.

According to him, the move would no longer allow the four contested areas to be discussed in future JBC meetings.

Despite the disagreement, both sides said the meeting had been held in a friendly atmosphere and agreed to continue working together on other parts of the 800-kilometre border.

This includes placing boundary markers and carrying out joint land surveys in areas not under dispute.

Cambodia says its claims are based on maps drawn at a 1:200,000 scale in line with treaties signed with France and Siam (now Thailand) in the early 1900s.

It has rejected any alternative maps used by Thailand, saying they are the root cause of repeated tensions.

Thailand has not accepted the ICJ’s role in the matter and says the issue should be solved through existing bilateral mechanisms.

The two countries agreed to meet again in September 2025, with Thailand hosting the next JBC session. Both sides also continue to work together through military and security committees to reduce tensions and manage cross-border cooperation.

The border issue has been sensitive for decades, with past disputes occasionally sparking armed clashes.

The closures followed a military clash last week in the disputed Emerald Triangle region, where the borders of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos meet.

On May 28, a Cambodian soldier was killed in a skirmish near the contested border area.

The incident has revived long-standing tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations, which have seen periodic confrontations along their 800-kilometre frontier.

Border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia date back decades, fuelled by conflicting territorial claims and historical grievances.

Talks were held over the weekend in an effort to de-escalate the situation, and both countries agreed to reposition troops away from areas of confrontation to avoid further conflict.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed on social media that discussions with Cambodian officials had produced what she called a “positive conclusion” and that both sides had pledged to reduce military tensions by adjusting their deployments.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Defence also echoed that message, saying military commanders had reached an agreement to move their forces to more neutral positions.

Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who remains a powerful voice in the country’s politics, praised the talks and urged both sides to prioritise diplomacy over confrontation.

Despite this temporary agreement, the situation remains fragile.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on Monday, June 9, that his government would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the latest border dispute.

While the ICJ ruled in 2013 that the area around the Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia, Thailand has never formally accepted the court’s jurisdiction in the matter.

The Thai border closures have had an immediate impact on local economies and cross-border communities.

With many travellers caught off guard by the shutdown, border towns are now seeing large numbers of stranded tourists and disrupted trade .

Further talks are expected to take place on June 14, but for now, uncertainty continues to grip the region as both governments try to contain tensions that have proven difficult to resolve for over a decade.

The Thai government has announced its intention to resolve a border dispute with Cambodia through peaceful and bilateral means as it remains committed to defending national sovereignty, the Bangkok Post reports.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page , the government emphasised its position: “The Thai force had to defend itself and the area of Thai sovereignty. The action complied with the principles of international law.”

The announcement referred to the May 28 skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province.

Following the incident, both governments engaged in discussions at multiple levels, including between prime ministers. They agreed to cooperate in restoring normalcy and use established bilateral mechanisms, notably the Joint Boundary Committee, which is scheduled to meet in Cambodia on June 14.

The government concluded by stating that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border is stable and expressed confidence that both countries can reach a mutual resolution.

The bridge, known as Bridge No. 28, was officially opened to the public on May 15, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. It sits along National Road No. 10 in Pursat province and was built by a Chinese company.

Phan Rim, a spokesperson for the ministry, told Xinhua News that the project was now fully complete and ready for use.

He said the bridge would help cut travel times and lower transport costs for local communities and businesses.

The structure stands 80 metres high and stretches 530 metres across the Russey Chrum river valley in Osom commune, Veal Veng district.

It is 10 metres wide and offers space for vehicles as well as areas for people to stop and enjoy views of the nearby forest.

Officials hope the bridge will support economic development in the area by improving road access in this mountainous region.

The bridge stands 90 metres high and is located in Pursat province, along National Road 10. It opened at 6 am on April 11 and will stay open each day from 6 am to 6 pm until April 17.

Only cars and motorbikes are allowed to use the bridge during this time.

Trucks and other large vehicles must take the old road.

People are also not allowed to stop on the bridge, even to take pictures, as part of efforts to keep traffic moving safely.

Phorn Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the rules are there to protect people.

“To ensure public safety, vehicles are strictly prohibited from stopping on the bridge,” he was quoted by The Phnom Penh Post .

The bridge is 538 metres long and 10 metres wide. It crosses the Russey Chrum stream in a village called Chhay Louk, in O'Som commune.

It is one of 32 bridges being built along National Road 10. This one is the tallest and is almost finished, with 98% of the work done.

People can take photos from special viewing spots built on the bridge.

Because the view is so popular, the government asked the Chinese company building the bridge to make the viewing area wider. It will now be 2.5 metres bigger.

The bridge will close again after April 17 so workers can finish the last parts, like painting road signs and adding safety lines. The full opening is planned for early May.

Sun Chanthol, the first vice-president of Cambodia’s development council, said the bridge will only open for full-time use when all safety work is done.

He asked everyone to drive carefully during the holidays, saying, “Let’s not turn a joyful day into a day of sorrow.

The full road project started in late 2019 and is expected to be finished in June of this year.

Over 540 Indian nationals to be repatriated

Over 540 Indian nationals employed in fraudulent "scam farms" in Cambodia will be repatriated to India on Monday in a major operation assisted by the Indian Air Force. According to Dynamite News , the individuals were lured under pretenses and forced to work in online scam operations involving phishing and fraud. Many faced harsh conditions, threats, and even violence.

National anthem event 'banned' at Ta Muen Thom

The New Alternative Party, led by Rachen Trakulwiang, planned a Thai national anthem event at Ta Muen Thom Temple on Sunday, March 9, 2025. However, the military requested a venue change to Ban Phluang Temple due to concerns over potential clashes with Cambodian crowds. The party caravan travelled to Surin Province, with members departing from Nonthaburi early Sunday morning, according to The Nation . Despite earlier military and Ministry of Defense warnings about border tensions, the party insisted on holding the event, citing prior arrangements with the public.

Cambodia's new cashew plant boosts local jobs and exports to China

Va Sokchea, once a garment worker in Phnom Penh, now earns $300 a month sorting and shelling cashew nuts at a local processing plant in central Cambodia. The facility, launched in early 2024 by Kampu Nuts Agro Product Co. Ltd., offers stable jobs close to home, reducing living costs and improving livelihoods. Another worker, So Suos, shifted from rice farming to the plant for better income. Fresh Plaza reports that the factory employs about 200 people and exports 3,000–4,000 tonnes of cashew nuts annually, with 95% sold to China, according to managing director Hout Hyhhaikeang.

The trailblazing female Cambodian tuk tuk group driving change

In a profession long dominated by men, a group of pioneering Cambodian women is reshaping norms by becoming tuk tuk drivers — challenging gender roles and driving social change one ride at a time. As per Inkl , these women, often the sole breadwinners for their families, are breaking barriers in Phnom Penh and beyond by steering tuk tuks, a job once seen as unsuitable for women. Many joined the profession to secure financial independence and escape low-paying, labour-intensive jobs in factories or markets.

Unveiling the plan on X, she credited Finance Minister and Deputy PM Pichai Chunhavajira, who developed it after consultations with five key economic agencies. According to The Nation , the plan includes accelerating the disbursement of over 100 billion baht in pending state funds, improving budget efficiency, and supporting structural economic reforms.
Thailand condemned for ‘shameful’ mass deportation of Uyghur refugees to China

The family of a Uyghur man feared to have been forcibly deported from Thailand to China has condemned the move as “shameful.” The deportations occurred despite UN warnings that those sent back faced a “real risk of torture.” Ignoring protests from the UN refugee agency, the EU, and the US, Thailand deported 40 Uyghurs who had been detained for a decade, claiming they returned voluntarily to their families. However, speaking to The Guardian , the family of one deportee insisted it was “impossible” that the men would willingly go back to China as reported by The Guardian .

The two-wheel EV tractors aim at cutting farming costs, reducing pollution, and making work easier, especially for women and young people.

Farmers currently spend a lot on labour and growing crops like corn or potatoes.

The EV tractors which run on electricity will solve this problem by replacing manual labour with modern technology.

They will also reduce pollution and protect the environment as they do not require fuel to run.

Kiripost also reports that these tractors will also be smart with cameras to check crops for pests and fertilizer needs, helping farmers avoid using too many chemicals.

With this technology, farmers will soon be able to control activities on their farms using a smartphone from up to 200 metres away.

Rather than selling EV tractors to individual farmers, the project plans to have service providers own them. One owner will be able to help 100 to 300 farmers in a community. The project is also working with banks and private companies to support the production of these tractors in Cambodia.

Testing is still ongoing on the tractors with the first trials scheduled to take place in S'ang district in Kandal province and Malai district in Banteay Meanchey province, focusing on vegetable, corn, and potato farming.

The project is backed by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), which is investing $6 million over five years.

Australian researchers from the University of Sydney and Murdoch University are working with Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture to ensure the tractors are suitable for local farmers.

ACIAR’s CEO, Professor Wendy Umberger, said the goal is to help Cambodian farmers use modern technology while protecting the land for the future.

The app, called BAKONG, works with VISA cards, letting visitors transfer money from their accounts to the app. Payments can then be made by scanning QR codes at shops and other locations.

Chea Serey, the governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said the app is designed to make travelling in Cambodia easier by reducing the need to carry cash.

She said it works at four million retail points across the country and improves payment efficiency for tourists.

The BAKONG app was first launched in 2024 and later added support for Mastercard.

It is part of Cambodia’s push to encourage cashless payments.

Millions of people in Cambodia already use digital apps like Grab, Foodpanda, and banking services on their smartphones.

Some tourists faced issues with the app when it first came out. Users said it sometimes took several attempts to scan QR codes, and poor internet signals made payments difficult in some areas. However, the Ministry of Tourism says the system has improved a lot in recent months.

While Cambodia is promoting cashless payments, most everyday transactions are still made with cash.

Many businesses display prices in both US dollars and the local currency, the Cambodian riel. The government wants to encourage more use of the riel, but it cannot be used outside the country.

Support for rice farmers

The Cambodian government has taken proactive steps to support rice farmers and stabilise prices in light of potential demand declines during the upcoming festive seasons observed in China and Vietnam. A significant US$150 million credit guarantee mechanism is set to empower rice mills by securing loans for the purchase of rice directly from farmers, supplementing this with an additional US$40 million dedicated to working capital. According to The Star , the government has allocated US$30 million to further bolster agricultural purchases and prevent the issue of unsold crops, in preparation for the festive period. Prime Minister Hun Manet has underscored the critical nature of these measures, along with considerations for tax waivers on agricultural lands and imports of farming equipment, aiming to modernise farming practices and promote local rice varieties. These initiatives collectively seek to enhance farmers' profitability and reduce dependency on imported rice.

New species discovered

A comprehensive biodiversity survey conducted within Virachey National Park in Cambodia has unveiled the presence of nine species for the first time, notably including the critically endangered large-antlered muntjac alongside various reptiles, bats, and flora. Led by Fauna & Flora in coordination with the Cambodian Ministry of Environment, this survey sheds light on the park's substantial biodiversity, reaffirming the imperative for its protection. Given its location in the Annamite Mountain range, Virachey is under constant threat from hunting and habitat degradation, Discover Wildlife says. The data collected during this survey is envisaged to inform and guide conservation strategies that will benefit both wildlife and the Indigenous communities relying on the park's resources.

Arrests over cocaine smuggling

In a significant law enforcement breakthrough, a Thai woman named Chamaiporn Singthong, 30, was apprehended at the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint while attempting to smuggle 6 kilograms of cocaine, estimated at a value of 16 million baht, back into Thailand from Cambodia. Her identification as a wanted suspect was made possible through advanced facial recognition technology. The illegal narcotics were ingeniously concealed in 656 individual small packages, ingeniously hidden within large rag dolls situated in her suitcase. Under interrogation, Chamaiporn revealed that her Nigerian spouse had compensated her with 100,000 baht to facilitate the transportation of the drugs, earmarked for distribution in Bangkok. According to Bangkok Post , this incident represents the largest drug seizure recorded at this checkpoint, prompting an expansive investigation by officers from Narcotics Board Region 2.

Garment export

Cambodia's garment export industry has experienced a substantial 24% growth in 2024, marking a significant upswing in this vital sector of the economy, according to Fibre2fashion .

Bribery, abuse of power

Sok Songha, the former head of the Anti-Drug Crime Office in Takeo, Cambodia, has been charged with corruption, facing allegations of bribery and abuse of power spanning from 2023 to 2024. He is at risk of facing a prison sentence of 7 to 15 years in accordance with Article 594 of the Penal Code, The Star reports. Co-accused Sok Kea remains in custody, although the specifics of his charges and their relation to drug-related activities remain unclear. Analysts and experts view this case as a pivotal moment that could instil deterrent effects against corruption within law enforcement; however, there is an overarching call for rigorous investigations into similar yet undisclosed cases that potentially link corruption to the pervasive drug trade in the region.

Poultry export

Thailand's poultry exports reached a record 320,000 metric tons in Q3 2024, marking an 11% increase from the previous year, according to the Rabobank Global Poultry Quarterly 2025 report . Total exports for the first three months of 2024 were 920,000 metric tons, up 6% year-over-year. Processed poultry exports particularly thrived, hitting 505,000 metric tons (14% increase) due to strong demand from Europe and Singapore, while raw/salted chicken trade showed weakness.

Rescue operation

A Hong Kong task force, led by Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk, received a positive response from Thailand regarding the rescue of 12 Hong Kong detainees at scam centres near the Thai-Myanmar and Myanmar-Laos borders. Cheuk noted that while the Thai government is committed to the issue, the chaotic conditions in these areas make any rescue operations challenging, and there is no set timeline for their efforts.

Deportation of 48 Uyghurs to China

A human rights group has urged Thailand not to deport 48 Uyghurs to China, where they face persecution. The men have been detained since 2014 after fleeing Xinjiang. Reports of coercion by Thai authorities to prepare for their deportation have heightened concerns for their safety. Justice for All emphasized the need to uphold international human rights standards and the non-refoulement principle, which protects individuals from being returned to places where they risk serious violations.

Greenlight for casino and gambling

Thailand's cabinet has approved a bill to legalize casino gambling, which will be reviewed by the Council of State before debating in parliament. The draft bill permits gambling only in integrated resorts that include various non-gaming facilities. Companies like Melco, Galaxy Entertainment, and MGM Resorts have expressed interest in operating these resorts. The move is seen as beneficial for domestic tourism and the economy, aligning Thailand with other regional markets that offer regulated gambling options, such as Singapore and Vietnam.

Killing of Cambodian government critic Lim Kimya

Thai police have charged Aekaluck Paenoi, a former navy officer and motorcycle taxi driver, with premeditated murder in the killing of Cambodian government critic Lim Kimya in Bangkok on January 7. Lim, 74, an outspoken opponent of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, was shot dead in broad daylight. Aekaluck was arrested in Cambodia and returned to Thailand, where he faces additional charges related to illegal weapon possession. Authorities are searching for a second suspect, identified as Pich Kimsrin, believed to have acted as a spotter.

Cambodia pardons jailed surrogate Philippine mothers

Cambodia has taken the significant step of pardoning and repatriating 13 Philippine women who were imprisoned for participating in a prohibited surrogacy scheme, which was deemed as attempted human trafficking. Initially detained in September, these women received four-year prison sentences in December, and upon their return to Manila, they were accompanied by three babies, with ten of the women still pregnant. Arab News reports that the Cambodian court highlighted substantial evidence indicating the intent to commercialise the babies, reflecting the complexities surrounding surrogacy laws. In Cambodia, surrogacy is illegal, while the Philippines lacks explicit legislation on the subject, leading to a legal grey area. Despite the prohibition, the demand for surrogacy continues to surge, particularly from Chinese couples seeking options.

Typhon missile to be deployed to boost PH deterrence capabilities

Philippine National Security Adviser Eduardo Año has declared that the deployment of the Typhon missile system is aimed at fortifying the country's defence capabilities, asserting it is not meant to threaten any other nation. He affirmed the Philippines' entitlement to enhance its national security and sovereignty without instigating conflict. In light of criticism from China, which warned that the missile deployment might trigger an arms race, Año described such assertions as unfounded speculation. According to GMA News , Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. echoed this sentiment, justifying the deployment as legal and necessary. The Typhon system, known as the Strategic Mid-range Fires System, is a versatile U.S. Army launcher with the capability to fire advanced missiles and has already participated in joint exercises with allied forces in 2024.

In addition, popular television series like "The Bear" and "Nobody Wants This" are contending for top accolades, marking an exciting year for the Globes, which will showcase a total of 27 award categories.

Fil-Am jailed for ‘murder’ of family members the day after Christmas

A 23-year-old Filipino American individual has been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing deaths of three family members—8-year-old Mia Chantelle Narvaez, 16-year-old Paul Sebastian Manangan, and 44-year-old Rona Nate—in Baldwin Park, California, on December 26. Eyewitnesses reported the sounds of screams and pleas for assistance before law enforcement intervened to discover all three victims deceased at the scene. The investigation is active, and authorities are appealing for public assistance in gathering information regarding the incident, CDN reports.

Philippines' online gambling ban prompts foreign worker exodus

In a notable policy shift, the Philippine government has announced a ban on online casinos catering to overseas customers, a decision that will come into effect by the end of the year. As reported by Nikkei Asia , this mandate, issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stems from rising concerns over criminal activities associated with the online gambling industry, which has led to the anticipated departure of approximately 24,000 foreign workers from the Philippines as a direct consequence of the new regulation.

Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the launch on Monday in Phnom Penh, calling it a big step in the National Strategy for Informal Economy Development 2023-2028.

According to him, the platform would recognise and support millions of informal workers across the country.

A survey shows that Cambodia has 7.9 million workers out of which only 1.7 million are in the formal sector. The other 6.2 million are in the informal economy, where they are more vulnerable to economic shocks and lack basic support

The platform aims to give workers access to job training, social protection, and financial services and is voluntary and free, targeting small businesses, self-employed individuals, and seasonal workers.

Prime Minister Manet expressed optimism that the platform will improve living standards, create new opportunities and also make it easier to respond during crises.

By collecting more data on informal workers, people who often miss out on important services like healthcare and loans will also be noticed and catered for.

The government hopes the new platform will help informal workers live better and have stronger protection in the future.

The docking of the USS Savannah in Sihanoukville is significant as the first American military visit to the country in eight years.

The warship docked just 30 kilometres from a Chinese-renovated naval base that has raised concerns in Washington.

The ship’s commanding officer, Daniel A. Sledz, said it was “great to be back” and hoped the visit would strengthen ties between the two nations. Cambodian officials welcomed the US crew and said the visit aimed to promote friendship and cooperation. This comes after years of deteriorating relations between Phnom Penh and Washington.

Meanwhile, China has been funding upgrades to Cambodia’s Ream naval base, which the US fears could be used for Beijing’s military. Cambodian leaders have denied these claims, but China’s presence in the region remains a concern.

The women were part of 24 foreign nationals arrested in Kandal province in September.

The court said the women intended to sell the babies for money, calling it "an act of human trafficking."

Two years of their sentences have been suspended, but authorities have not shared what will happen to the babies after they are born.

A Cambodian woman who cooked meals for the group was also jailed for two months and one day.

Seven other Filipino women and four Vietnamese women, who were not pregnant, have also been deported.

Cambodia banned commercial surrogacy in 2016 but remains a hub for the illegal practice. Many surrogacy clients come from China, where demand is high due to eased childbearing policies.

In recent years, dozens of Cambodian women have been arrested for surrogacy. Most were released after agreeing to keep the children.

An Australian nurse was jailed in 2018 for running a surrogacy clinic in Cambodia.

Dara, known for his courageous reporting on cyber scams and human trafficking, revealed that his arrest and subsequent imprisonment have left him without the courage to continue his work.

Mech Dara was arrested on September 30, 2024, on charges of inciting social disorder.

His arrest was linked to several social media posts that authorities claimed contained false information and were harmful to Cambodia and its leaders.

During his detention, Dara was subjected to intense interrogation and was reportedly forced to apologise publicly.

On October 23, 2024, a pro-government media outlet released a video of Dara in prison, where he apologised to former Prime Minister Hun Sen and his son, current Prime Minister Hun Manet.

In the video, Dara admitted to posting false information and promised not to do so in the future.

This experience, he said, has severely impacted his spirit and resolve.

"After my experience from the arrest -from the questioning and then being in the prison- it really , really crushed my soul, the soul that is always with me like no matter what is happening, I continue to report. But the spirit or soul is not with me anymore," Dara told AFP

Mech Dara's reporting has been instrumental in uncovering cyber scams and human trafficking operations in Cambodia.

His work has appeared in various international news outlets, and he was previously associated with the independent Voice of Democracy in Cambodia, which was shut down by authorities in February 2023.

In 2023, he received a Hero Award from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his investigations into human trafficking and forced criminality. This recognition highlighted the significant impact of his reporting on improving government responses to these issues.

Cambodia's constitution and the 1995 Press Law theoretically protect press freedom. However, these protections are often undermined by other laws and practices that restrict journalistic activities.

The application of criminal laws against journalists, including charges of defamation, incitement, and spreading false information, has created an environment of fear and self-censorship.

Media ownership in Cambodia is highly concentrated, with many outlets owned or controlled by individuals with close ties to the government.

This lack of media pluralism limits the diversity of viewpoints available to the public and often results in biased reporting that favours the government.
