What began as a franchise selection issue has escalated into a geopolitical standoff involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The IPL exit and political pressure

In December, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed Rahman for Rs 9.2 crore ($1 million) during the IPL auction held in Abu Dhabi, making him one of the most expensive overseas players at the event. However, on January 3, the BCCI instructed KKR to release Rahman.

The move was influenced by political pressure within India. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised objections to the participation of Bangladeshi players in the IPL following reports of communal violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

These leaders called for a boycott of Bangladeshi products and public figures, with Rahman’s presence in the IPL becoming a focal point of the criticism. In retaliation for the removal, Bangladeshi authorities banned all broadcasts of the IPL within their borders.

Tensions have been high between the South Asian neighbours since former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in 2024.

Escalation to the T20 World Cup

Rahman’s removal soon had implications beyond the IPL. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested that its T20 World Cup matches be moved from India to Sri Lanka, citing "security concerns".

The ICC rejected this request, citing an "absence of any credible security threat". When the BCB failed to confirm its participation within a 24-hour deadline, the ICC removed Bangladesh from the tournament, replacing them with Scotland.

The ICC defended its firm stance by stating it was vital "not to establish 'precedents that could undermine the neutrality and fairness of ICC events'".

Pakistan boycott and financial risks

The situation worsened when Pakistan intervened in support of Bangladesh. The Pakistan government and the PCB accused the ICC of "double standards".

In a significant blow to the tournament’s commercial viability, the Pakistani government ordered its national team not to take the field against India for their scheduled match on 15 February.

This "selective participation" poses a major financial threat to the ICC, as India-Pakistan matches generate significant broadcast and commercial revenue that can attract over 600 million viewers.

The ICC has warned that such actions are "not in the interest of the global game" and called for a "mutually acceptable resolution". Supporting the government's stance, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi stated: "This is the moment for the ICC to lead and prove through decisions, not statements, that it is impartial, independent and fair to every member".

Transition to the Pakistan Super League

Amid the ongoing dispute, Rahman secured a contract in the PSL with the Lahore Qalandars, signing for $230,000. He was one of two players signed directly outside the league’s auction process. This is Rahman’s third stint with the franchise since the PSL began in 2016, where he is viewed as a foundational member of the squad.

Lahore Qalandars owner Sameen Rana publicly backed the player, stating: “Once a Qalandar, always a Qalandar. Mustafizur is not just a player; he’s a brother, a key part of our family who never left”.

Rana added that Rahman’s “talent, experience, and dedication” would be important as the team prepares to defend its title in the upcoming PSL 11 season.

Asia’s vast cultural diversity is seen in its sporting preferences, as revealed in a compelling visual map by The World in Maps, which highlights the most popular sport in each Asian country .

From the football-dominated West to cricket-mad South Asia and niche regional favorites, the continent showcases an eclectic athletic landscape.

Football takes the crown in the majority of Asian nations, particularly in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia .

Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan all list football as their number one sport. The global game's widespread accessibility and international appeal have helped it gain deep roots across the region.

Cricket unsurprisingly emerges as the undisputed favorite in India and Pakistan, where the sport is not just a game but a national obsession.

Neighbouring Afghanistan and Sri Lanka also align with this trend. Despite economic challenges, cricket remains a unifying and celebratory force in these countries.

In China and the Philippines , basketball has carved out a dominant spot. China’s massive investment in professional leagues and the NBA’s popularity have helped solidify its appeal.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, street and school basketball have long been integral to everyday life.

Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan stand out with baseball as their top sport, an influence dating back to American occupation and cultural exchange.

The sport enjoys professional leagues, loyal fanbases, and school-to-pro pipelines, especially in Japan where it's considered a national pastime.

2025 Opening of Zimbabwe International Trade Fair

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo is set to officially open the 2025 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo from April 21 to 26, themed "Industrialisation: Crafting an Integrated Landscape." According to Club of Mozambique , the event is seeing robust preparation with nearly 600 exhibitors registered, including 98 first-time participants, indicating a surge in international interest from 29 countries. The fair will feature various notable events including a Rural Industrialisation Indaba, Connect Africa Symposium, and an International Business Forum. Celebrating its 65th year, ZITF aims to significantly bolster trade, investment, and industrial growth across Zimbabwe and the surrounding region.

Parliament shutdown

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made headlines recently by shutting down Zimbabwe's Parliament, igniting fears of a possible impeachment attempt. The disruption was sparked when the Deputy Speaker suspended a motion, reportedly supported by discontented ZANU-PF legislators and opposition MPs, relating to alleged constitutional violations by the President. The Zimbabwe Mail reports that the chaotic proceedings culminated in Parliament's adjournment until May 2025, prompting opposition leaders to denounce this step as procedural misconduct threatening democratic norms. Following this, protests have emerged, with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association declaring the suspension indicative of excessive executive power. This political upheaval is reflective of mounting tensions within ZANU-PF as the nation faces an economic crisis in anticipation of the 2028 elections. Notably, state media has remained largely quiet amidst rumours of arrests connected to the looming impeachment initiative.

Fuel transport

In a strategic move, Companhia do Pipeline Moçambique-Zimbabwe (CPMZ) has announced plans to enhance the capacity of its Beira corridor pipeline from 3 million to 5 million cubic meters per annum by 2027. This upgrade aims to optimise fuel transport from Mozambique's Port of Beira to Harare, extending to other markets in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana, EnergyCapital & Power reports . The announcement was made by Victor Macuácua in Cape Town, underscoring over four decades of effective transport operations, a critical infrastructure component for regional connectivity and commerce.

Cricket games

Zimbabwe’s cricket team has announced a 15-man squad for their two-Test series against Bangladesh, marking an important return to the subcontinent since 2020. The squad sees veteran all-rounder Sean Williams and captain Craig Ervine returning, alongside the inclusion of wicketkeeper-batter Tafadzwa Tsiga and uncapped leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa, while players such as Joylord Gumbie and Takudzwanashe Kaitano have been omitted. According to the International Cricket Council , Head Coach Justin Sammons expressed optimism regarding the team's development and readiness for the impending challenges, with the first Test set for Sylhet from April 20–24, followed by a second Test in Chattogram from April 28 to May 2.

Efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS

Zimbabwe has demonstrated remarkable advancements in addressing HIV/AIDS, having achieved the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets designed to eliminate AIDS as a public health danger by 2030. Specifically, this entails ensuring that 95% of individuals living with HIV are aware of their status, that 95% of those diagnosed are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and that 95% of those on treatment achieve viral suppression. New Zimbabwe reports that, although the country faces economic challenges, efforts by the government, international organisations, and civil society have amplified access to ART and awareness initiatives. Critical contributions have emerged from village health workers and faith-based initiatives, such as the International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Affected by HIV/AIDS (INERELA+), that tackle stigma and extend support within communities. While these collaborative efforts signify the attainability of progress, officials underscore the necessity of ongoing vigilance to fully eradicate AIDS by 2030.

Rand depreciation

The South African rand has recently shown a decline against the U.S. dollar, settling at 17.81 on December 10, 2023. According to CNBC Africa , market participants are keenly awaiting pivotal economic indicators, featuring forthcoming releases of October's mining production and manufacturing output. These reports, due at 0930 GMT and 1100 GMT respectively, are expected to provide critical insights into the current economic landscape. Moreover, the upcoming November Business Confidence Index will shed light on private sector morale, indicating how businesses perceive their operational environment amidst fluctuating economic conditions. Notably, the stability of South Africa’s 2030 government bond yield, currently at 8.895%, exemplifies a certain level of investor confidence in the nation's long-term financial stability.

Hippo chases tourist vehicle

During a leisure safari in Manyoni Private Game Reserve, tourists encountered a thrilling yet perilous situation when a hippo charged at their vehicle. This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the necessity for experienced guidance during such encounters. Tourist Katherine Gilson and companions, who initially revelled in safari sights, including a cheetah with her cubs, found themselves swiftly reacting to danger. Guided by their expert, Sandiso, they rapidly reversed the vehicle, successfully averting a potential disaster as the hippo finally retreated without causing harm, India Today reports. This experience poignantly highlights the duality of wildlife tourism: the allure of natural encounters coupled with inherent risks.

Cricket

Cricket South Africa has revealed the Proteas Women's squad designed for their imminent one-off Test against England at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein. ICC-Cricket reports that the team, comprising 15 skilled players, sees Tumi Sekhukhune stepping in for Ayabonga Khaka, alongside returning Test players Lara Goodall, Ayanda Hlubi, and Chloé Tryon. Historically, this marks the eighth Test meeting between the two teams; however, South Africa has yet to secure a victory, trailing with England's two wins and five draws. Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi accentuated the significance of red-ball cricket, positing it as a foundational aspect for players to enhance their tactical and technical understanding of the game. Key squad members include Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch, who are pivotal to the team's strategic framework.

 G20 presidency

South Africa commenced its G20 presidency on December 1, with the inaugural Sherpas Meeting taking place in Johannesburg. Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Raymond Lamola, articulated the presidency's core tenets: "Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability." The agenda prioritises crucial matters including disaster resilience, debt alleviation in low-income countries, and a just transition to renewable energy sources, Xinhua News reports. To effectively address these challenges, three temporary task forces have been established, focusing on inclusive economic growth, mitigating inequality, and enhancing food security. Lamola reiterated the necessity for robust multilateral cooperation, advocating alignment of G20 initiatives with the African Union's Agenda 2063. The ongoing discussions from the Sherpas Meeting, which concludes on December 10, are set to pave the way for subsequent Finance and Central Bank Deputies Meetings.

 Business Confidence

A recent survey indicated a significant upswing in South African business confidence, marking the most substantial year-on-year increase in nearly two years. The Business Confidence Index (BCI) climbed to 118.1 in November from 114.2 in October, largely propelled by a surge in tourist arrivals, rising precious metal prices, and strong new vehicle sales. According to U.S News , this newfound optimism towards the coalition government's economic direction also plays a pivotal role in the increase. Nevertheless, this optimistic sentiment contrasts sharply with the unexpected contraction of the country's GDP in the third quarter, attributed to a drought severely impacting agricultural output. Despite this setback, economists anticipate modest growth in the forthcoming quarters, reflecting a cautious but hopeful recovery trajectory for the South African economy.

Zimbabwe on track to set new winter wheat production record

Zimbabwe is on track to set a new winter wheat production record, having already harvested over 490,000 tonnes this season, exceeding last year’s record of 460,000 tonnes. Farmers cultivated 121,900 hectares, the largest area since the 1960s, and achieved an average yield of five tonnes per hectare. Total production could surpass 600,000 tonnes, significantly above the annual requirement of 360,000 tonnes, which is expected to stabilise staple food prices. Collaboration between the government and the private sector, along with dedicated power supplies for farmers, contributed to enhanced productivity. Zimbabwe, alongside Ethiopia, has recently achieved wheat self-sufficiency, a notable feat for the continent.

Collaboration with Eswatini on energy efficiency projects

Zimbabwe is set to collaborate with Eswatini on energy efficiency projects, which are expected to enhance bilateral relations and significantly benefit both nations. During a workshop in Bulawayo, energy expert Mzwandile Thwala highlighted that implementing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for cooling systems could save the region 8 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity by 2040, translating to a savings of around $840 million in electricity costs and a reduction of 6.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Enhancement of mobile connectivity in Zimbabwe’s border areas

The Zimbabwean government is taking steps to enhance mobile connectivity in border areas, as many residents currently rely on foreign service providers. Minister of Information Communication Technology, Dr Tatenda Mavetera, announced that initiatives will focus on underserved rural regions. The initiative is consistent with Zimbabwe's strategic goal of achieving a fully digitized and paperless economy by the year 2030.

Zimbabwe set to launch second satellite

Zimbabwe is set to launch its second earth observation satellite, ZimSat-2, on November 5, contingent on weather conditions. Developed by the Zimbabwe National Geo-Spatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) in collaboration with Southwest State University in Russia, ZimSat-2 features a multispectral camera for high-resolution imaging vital for agriculture, geology, urban planning, and environmental monitoring. Its primary function is to monitor crop health and analyse vegetation using the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI).

Help from China and India

The evolving geopolitical dynamics in Sri Lanka are significantly influenced by the recent election of Marxist-leaning President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Emphasis from India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the necessity for India and China to cooperate in stabilising the region highlights the strategic importance of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. Enhanced Sino-Lankan ties are anticipated, alongside a noteworthy shift in the nation’s foreign policy after the forthcoming elections, particularly the potential lifting of a ban on Chinese research vessels under pressures from India and the US. According to T he Manila Times , Dissanayake’s election reflects a homegrown "colour revolution," diverging from previous foreign-influenced political changes, and suggests a pivot towards China's development model.

 Flooding kills three

Severe flooding in Sri Lanka, attributed to relentless torrential rains, has severely impacted over 134,000 individuals, causing three fatalities and two serious injuries. The districts of Colombo and Gampaha have been significantly affected, with 240 homes reported as damaged and around 7,000 residents forced to evacuate. The Watchers reports that the adverse weather patterns are projected to continue until October 17, significantly disrupting transportation systems with submerged roadways and public transport entanglements. The government has announced a relief package of LKR 50 million (approximately USD 170,000), with military crews actively engaged in rescue missions, as monsoon-related challenges have beset the nation since May.

Pharmaceutical production

In diplomatic developments, the Cuban government is steering its focus towards enhancing pharmaceutical production in Sri Lanka, as articulated by Ambassador Andres Marcelo Gonzalez Garrido during dialogues with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. As reported by the Daily News , the dialogue encompassed the fortification of their 65-year diplomatic bond, resuming mosquito control initiatives supported by Cuba, and extending scholarships in both medical and sports fields. The Prime Minister has acknowledged Cuba’s assistance amid its economic tribulations, extending an invitation for the Cuban Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka. This cooperation is pivotal in ensuring that both nations continue their collaborative journey.

T20 victory

In sports, Dunith Wellalage's T20 debut has marked a dazzling performance, leading Sri Lanka to a considerable 73-run triumph against the West Indies during the second T20 International on October 15, 2024. Wellalage's bowling performance, which included figures of 3/9, greatly contributed to the West Indies' downfall, restricting them to a mere 89 runs in pursuit of a 163-run target. Coupled with supportive spins from Maheesh Theekshana and Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka displayed compelling dominance throughout the match. Batting first, Sri Lanka established an impressive total of 162/5, anchored by Pathum Nissanka's crucial 54 runs. Post-match analyses commended Wellalage's poise and technical prowess, indicating his rising potential in Sri Lankan cricket for forthcoming tournaments, Lanka Sara reports.

Dollar rates

Financially, as of October 16, the Sri Lankan Rupee has displayed stability against the US Dollar within commercial banking institutions. Seylan Bank registered rises in both buying and selling rates, whereas NDB Bank reflected a decline in these rates. Conversely, the Commercial Bank observed decreased rates as well, while Sampath Bank's rates held constant, reports Newswire . The notable currency exchange rates are as follows: Seylan Bank: Buying - Rs. 289.85, Selling - Rs. 297.35; NDB Bank: Buying - Rs. 289.25, Selling - Rs. 297.25; Commercial Bank: Buying - Rs. 287.50, Selling - Rs. 297.25; Sampath Bank: Buying - Rs. 289, Selling - Rs. 298.
