Miguel Díaz-Canel told a United Nations forum that the arrival of 100,000 tonnes of Russian fuel offered temporary relief to a worsening energy crisis, while denouncing the US embargo as a “violation of human rights”. He warned that shortages persist across the island, disrupting essential services such as healthcare, and called for greater international cooperation as Cuba remains heavily dependent on imported energy.

The shipment, delivered aboard the vessel Anatoly Kolodkin, is intended to help alleviate the island’s ongoing energy shortages. Officials said the supply provides temporary relief amid fuel constraints, as the country works to process the crude into usable products. Authorities also highlighted the significance of the delivery in the context of ongoing US restrictions, while expressing gratitude to Russia for the support.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Force, said in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) that Uganda would side with Israel if it comes under existential threat.

“We want the war in the Middle East to end now. The world is tired of it,” Kainerugaba wrote. “But any talk of destroying or defeating Israel will bring us into the war. On the side of Israel.”

Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and a key political figure as chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, framed his stance in religious terms, citing Christian solidarity with Israel.

“We stand with Israel because we are Christians… Jesus Christ [is] the only One who can forgive sins,” he said, quoting a biblical passage to underscore his position.

The remarks come amid heightened global concern that the Middle East conflict could widen, with alliances and ideological ties potentially drawing in actors beyond the region.

Kainerugaba’s statements signal that parts of Africa could be pulled into the crisis if hostilities escalate further, particularly if Israel faces direct threats.

In another post, he warned of broader geopolitical consequences, saying an attack on Cuba by “colonialists and imperialists” would mark “the beginning of World War 3,” amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to “take” the Latin American country.

Kainerugaba also pointed to historical ties between Uganda and Israel, saying Kampala would be prepared to offer assistance if requested.

“Israel stood with us when we were nobodys in the 1980s and 1990s,” he said. “Why wouldn’t we defend her now that our GDP is $100 billion? One of the largest in Africa.”

While the Ugandan government has not issued a formal policy statement echoing his remarks, Kainerugaba’s position is closely watched given his senior military role and political influence.

Amid Trump threats and blackout, Cuba receives 60,000 tonnes of rice from China

The Cuban Embassy in China said the first batch of the donation had set sail for Cuba, describing the shipment as proof that “the solidarity of true friends prevails” in the face of adversity.

The embassy said the aid came from the People ’s Republic of China and framed it as a sign that Cuba was not alone as it faced mounting external and domestic pressures.

The shipment comes as Cuba has been plunged into crisis following a collapse of its national power grid, which left the country of about 10 million people without electricity.

Cuba’s state power utility, Union Nacional Electrica de Cuba, said the country suffered a “ complete shutdown of the national grid ,” while the Ministry of Energy and Mines reported a “complete disconnection” of the national electrical system and said it was investigating the cause.

State media later said power had been restored to about 5% of Havana’s residents, or roughly 42,000 customers, as well as several hospitals, although officials warned that the small circuits restored so far could fail again. It was Cuba’s third major blackout in the past four months.

The blackout unfolded against the backdrop of what Chinese and Cuban officials have described as continued U.S. pressure on the island.

Trump, speaking at the White House on Monday, said he believed he would have “the honour of taking Cuba.”

“Whether I free it, take it — think I could do anything I want with it. You want to know the truth. They’re a very weakened nation right now,” he said.

China has repeatedly said it will continue its “ support and assistance ” to Cuba and has condemned Washington’s pressure, saying it undermines regional peace and stability.

The Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, recently denounced the impact of the U.S. blockade on the Cuban people and said Beijing would continue backing Cuba’s sovereignty and national security while deepening cooperation in areas such as energy and food.

Chinese-backed projects cited by the ambassador included solar parks donated by China, solar energy systems for isolated homes and community centres, and food assistance, including shipments of rice.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the crisis has been driven by Cuba’s inability to import enough fuel, which has invariably triggered an energy emergency that is now hitting hospitals, food distribution and water deliveries.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said hospitals are facing frequent blackouts, shortages of essential medicines and difficulties operating critical equipment, with major disruption to services including oncology care, dialysis, emergency services and maternal and infant care. OCHA said about 16,000 cancer patients need radiotherapy, and more than 12,000 relying on chemotherapy are being affected by power and resource shortages.

Fuel shortages are also limiting ambulance movements and slowing aid operations. OCHA said nearly one million people depend on water delivered by tanker trucks, while more than 80% of water-pumping infrastructure relies on electricity, leading to widespread service disruptions.

The UN said it is engaging member states, including the United States, to ensure humanitarian assistance can be delivered.

Footage showed long lines of vehicles waving Cuban flags and displaying placards with anti-US slogans. Protesters said a tightening of the blockade has worsened fuel shortages in Cuba and put lives at risk, calling the measures illegal under international law and urging global solidarity.

Officials said the people on the boat shot first and injured the captain of the Cuban vessel. The coastguard returned fire, killing four people and arresting the remaining six.

The Cuban government said all 10 people on the boat were Cuban nationals who live in the United States. One of the men killed was identified as Michel Ortega Casanova. Authorities also detained an 11th man on land, who they claim was part of the group. Cuba said the group was planning "an infiltration with terrorist aims".

Officials reported that several weapons and tactical items were found on the boat. These included assault rifles, handguns, homemade bombs, and Molotov cocktails. Bulletproof vests and camouflage uniforms were also recovered. Cuban authorities added that most of the men have "prior records involving criminal and violent activity".

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the incident as "highly unusual". He told reporters that it "was not a US operation" and said no US government personnel were involved. Rubio stated that the US would not rely solely on Cuba’s account and would instead "verify that independently".

“As we gather more information, then we'll be prepared to respond accordingly,” he said.

Rubio, whose parents emigrated to the United States from Cuba in the 1950s, has long criticised the Communist-run government in Havana. On Wednesday, he said that "Cuba's status quo is unacceptable" and "needs to change".

"They need to make dramatic reforms," he said, urging its Communist leadership to "open the space for both economic and eventually political freedom for the people of Cuba".

The shootout happened at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries. The United States has been blocking oil shipments to Cuba, contributing to a severe energy crisis on the island. Shortly before the shooting, however, the US government announced it would allow some oil sales for "commercial and humanitarian use".

Cuba Roundup: US tensions escalate, blackout cinema resilience, Martí remembrance

Cuba denounces new US escalation and vows to defend sovereignty

Cuba’s government condemned what it described as a new aggressive escalation by the United States, reaffirming its determination to defend national sovereignty. Official statements accused Washington of intensifying economic pressure through additional measures that further strain the island’s fragile economy. Authorities framed the latest actions as part of a broader hostile policy aimed at destabilising the country. Havana insisted it will resist external interference and continue defending its political system. The rhetoric underscores renewed diplomatic tension between the two nations.

Open-air cinema offers relief amid prolonged blackouts in Havana

Residents in Havana gathered for an open-air film screening organised by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), creating a rare communal moment amid severe electricity shortages. Using inflatable screens and rechargeable batteries due to fuel scarcity, organisers transformed a darkened street into a temporary cinema. Blackouts now affect more than half of the island during peak hours, worsening after new US measures targeting countries supplying oil to Cuba. President Miguel Díaz-Canel accused Washington of “asphyxiating” the country energetically, while residents described the screenings as a welcome emotional escape. The initiative reflects community resilience in the face of a deepening energy crisis.

Cuba commemorates key milestone in Martí’s political project

Cuban media marked an anniversary described as a decisive moment in the maturation and crystallisation of José Martí’s political vision. The date is portrayed as pivotal in consolidating the ideological foundations of Cuba’s independence movement. Official narratives emphasised Martí’s enduring influence on national identity and revolutionary thought. The commemoration reinforced the symbolic importance of historical memory in contemporary political discourse. Authorities highlighted Martí’s project as a cornerstone of sovereignty and unity.

US Supreme Court to examine issues related to measures against Cuba

Cuba reported that the United States Supreme Court will examine matters linked to the application of aggressive measures against the island. State media framed the review as part of ongoing legal and political disputes surrounding US sanctions policy. The development is seen as significant given the long-standing legal battles connected to economic restrictions. Cuban authorities continue to criticise the broader sanctions regime as unlawful and harmful to the population . The case adds another dimension to bilateral tensions.

Solar kits priced at over 75,000 pesos amid worsening blackouts

The Cuban government is promoting the sale of solar panel kits as power outages across the country frequently exceed 12 to 16 hours per day. According to the state electricity company, an 800-watt module costs 75,200 Cuban pesos and includes a solar panel, cables, connectors and a battery with 1,200-watt output. While the system can power basic appliances such as a refrigerator, rice cooker or television, it does not fully cover the needs of an average household. The programme is partly aimed at recognised “Heroes and Heroines of Labour”, with more than 130 modules already installed under a broader plan targeting over 10,000 workers. However, the price equals more than 20 average monthly state salaries, making it largely inaccessible without remittances or external support. Although authorities announced tariff exemptions and tax incentives for renewable energy investment, the high upfront cost highlights the economic constraints facing most Cuban families amid the ongoing energy crisis.

Donations were collected in the Zócalo, as organisers cited worsening fuel shortages on the island following measures announced in January by Donald Trump, including tariffs targeting countries that export oil to Cuba.

Olivia Garza, Vice President of the Association of Cubans Residing in Mexico “José Martí”, said the campaign aims to promote regional unity. She argued that “defending Cuba is defending all of Latin America ”, accusing Washington of seeking to impose a “Monroe Doctrine 2.0” to assert control over the region’s resources. Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has stated that her government will continue sending humanitarian aid to Havana and has criticised the US measures as unfair.

Speaking in Mexico City, Sheinbaum confirmed that commercial flights between the two countries remain active and noted that Cuban aircraft are able to refuel in Mexico. Her remarks came a day after Mexico dispatched two ships carrying more than 800 tonnes of food and essential goods to the island.

Cuba’s energy shortages have intensified in recent weeks, with Díaz-Canel accusing Washington of imposing an “energy blockade”. The strain follows an executive order signed by Donald Trump allowing additional US tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba, a move that has further complicated the island’s access to fuel.

Kamil Zayas and Ernesto R. Medina were remanded in custody on accusations of “propaganda against the constitutional order”, according to reports from independent media and civil society groups.

The charge is linked to provisions in Cuba’s penal code that criminalise actions deemed to undermine the state’s constitutional system. Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific content or actions that led to the decision, but both individuals are known online for sharing commentary critical of official policies and the country’s political direction.

Human rights organisations have described the move as part of an escalating pattern of legal action against activists, journalists and digital content creators in recent years. Cuban officials, however, have consistently defended the application of such laws as necessary to protect national sovereignty and public order.

The case comes at a time of heightened economic strain and social tension on the island, with dissent increasingly expressed through social media platforms. The decision to impose provisional detention means both influencers will remain in custody while investigations continue and the legal process moves forward.

Speaking at a press conference in Havana, Díaz-Canel said Cuba is open to discussing any issue on an equal footing, provided its sovereignty, independence and right to self-determination are respected.

He emphasised that Cuba does not view the American people as adversaries and highlighted past areas of cooperation between the two countries, including in science, culture, health, sports and religion. According to Díaz-Canel, previous exchanges have shown that there are shared interests where both sides can work together when conditions allow.

The Cuban leader also criticised recent US measures, including tariffs authorised by President Donald Trump on countries supplying oil to Cuba, describing them as an effective energy blockade with serious economic consequences. His comments come after Washington announced new restrictions in January, amid growing tensions and renewed rhetoric over Cuba’s economic crisis and energy shortages.

Mexico sends 85,000 barrels of oil to Cuba amid regional energy shifts

A tanker carrying 85,000 barrels of Mexican crude oil arrived in Havana, continuing ongoing exports to Cuba amid Venezuela’s deepening energy crisis and shifting regional dynamics. The government confirmed the shipments are part of sustained contracts or humanitarian aid, and that Mexico has become a significant supplier to Cuba as Venezuelan output declines. Data shows Mexico exported an average of over 12,000 bpd to Cuba in 2025, surpassing Venezuela’s deliveries, although President Claudia Sheinbaum insists levels remain within historical norms. Critics, including opposition figures, argue the exports lack transparency and represent a financial contribution to Cuba’s government without clear public accounting. The move occurs against rising geopolitical tension with the United States over Cuba and Venezuela policy.

Sheinbaum orders foreign affairs talks after Trump’s cartel claims

President Claudia Sheinbaum instructed Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss security cooperation after US President Donald Trump announced plans to “start attacking the cartels on the ground.” Sheinbaum said the talks aim to “strengthen communication” and share information on seized drug laboratories and coordinated efforts. She also spoke to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to reaffirm a shared understanding of security issues, describing Trump’s rhetoric as part of his communication style. The diplomatic move reflects efforts to balance cooperation with the US and Mexico’s sovereignty amid heightened cross-border security concerns.

Experts warn of potential terrorism risk ahead of 2026 World Cup

Security specialists have flagged a potential terrorism risk in Mexico during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that the heightened global profile of the event could attract threats. At a security panel, they urged stronger coordination among Mexico, the United States and Canada to improve screening and border security, and highlighted vulnerabilities such as gaps in shared traveller-vetting systems. Former Mexican ambassador Arturo Sarukhán emphasised the need for integrated security strategies to prevent incidents tied to organised crime or extremist actors during the tournament. The warning reflects broader concerns about public safety and international cooperation in the run-up to one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Government ups its bet on voluntary disarmament to curb violence

Mexico’s federal government is increasing cash incentives for the voluntary surrender of firearms under its “Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz” programme, part of a broader strategy to reduce violence and illegal gun circulation. The new scale of payments offers higher amounts for surrendering machine guns, military-grade rifles and other weapons compared with last year, alongside protections for participants’ anonymity. The initiative, coordinated by the Secretariat of the Interior and backed by the army for the secure destruction of collected arms, is intended to tackle structural causes of violent crime by removing firearms from circulation. Officials say the programme boosts community safety while encouraging peaceful engagement.

National forest policy updated with new zoning framework

The government published a national forest zoning agreement under the General Law of Sustainable Forest Development, creating a unified, technical framework to manage Mexico’s forests. The zoning categorises forested areas by natural vocation, from conservation and restoration to sustainable production zones, using geospatial data and ecological inventories to guide planning and protect biodiversity. Authorities say the policy aims to improve coordination across government levels, promote conservation and support sustainable resource use while safeguarding soil, water and ecosystem services . The move responds to long-standing calls for more strategic, science-based forest governance and environmental planning.

The official mourning period began early Monday, January 5, and will run until the end of Tuesday, January 6, marking one of Cuba’s most serious overseas military losses in recent years.

In the decree announcing the mourning period, Díaz-Canel said the personnel were carrying out missions on behalf of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and Ministry of the Interior, at the request of Venezuelan institutions. He stated that those killed died either in direct combat or as a result of bombardments on facilities, describing their actions as a reflection of Cuba’s longstanding policy of international solidarity.

Venezuelan authorities said the Cuban personnel were operating within the framework of cooperation between sovereign states, performing institutional protection and defence duties. Media reports indicate that the wider US attacks in the Venezuelan states of Miranda, La Guaira and Aragua have left at least 80 people dead, including both civilians and military personnel, further intensifying regional and international scrutiny of the operation.

Amid this ongoing crisis, authorities recently suggested that 2026 could mark a turning point for the national electrical network, aiming to restore stability after a cascade of blackouts that left large parts of the country in darkness.

However, just days ago, a partial collapse of the grid once again plunged Havana and large swathes of western Cuba into darkness. A transmission-line failure severed the connection between the capital and the country’s largest power plant in Matanzas, the latest in a string of outages underlining how fragile the system remains. Even though officials reported a gradual restoration of power, the blackout reinforced doubts among citizens about whether promises of recovery are realistic.

In recent years, the government has announced plans to diversify energy production by investing in renewable sources, including solar, wind and biomass projects and to gradually reduce reliance on fossil-fuel thermal plants. But experts warn that these measures alone may not be enough. With effective generation capacity reportedly far below national demand, and a legacy of deferred maintenance and substandard fuel quality, the grid remains highly vulnerable to further failures unless major structural reforms are implemented.

For ordinary Cubans, the unreliability of electricity has become a daily reality, with long power cuts, unpredictable outages, and uncertainty over essential services from water pumping to food preservation. While 2026 is being billed by authorities as a year for possible recovery, the recent collapse illustrates how fragile hope remains, and how much work still lies ahead if the island hopes to restore a stable, reliable power supply.

Between January and October 2025, the island’s crude and refined fuel imports declined by around 35% compared to the same period in 2024.

The reduction has especially hurt supplies of fuel oil, one of the most important inputs for Cuba’s ageing thermoelectric power plants. Deliveries from Mexico fell by approximately 73%, while imports from Venezuela, historically Cuba’s most significant energy partner, dropped by nearly 15%.

As a result, Cuba has been forced to shut down significant portions of its electricity generation capacity. According to the national electrical union, nearly 900 megawatts, almost a third of daily demand, are now offline due to a lack of fuel and lubricants. In Havana, residents report unplanned blackouts of up to nine hours, while more remote provinces sometimes receive only two to four hours of electricity each day.

Cuban officials have attributed the crisis to a combination of external and internal factors, including the steep reduction in shipments from allies, payment difficulties, and a shortage of vessels capable of transporting fuel across the Caribbean. Meanwhile, longstanding US sanctions , economic instability and damage to infrastructure from Hurricane Melissa are also compounding the problem.

The situation has renewed international attention on Cuba’s energy vulnerability and geopolitical isolation. As global allies recalibrate their own energy strategies, Havana’s ability to maintain stable electricity access and avoid further social disruption may depend on forging new partnerships or accelerating its transition to renewable energy .

The Communist Party prepares for its 11th Plenum

The Communist Party of Cuba has officially convened its 11th Plenary Session of the Central Committee, marking another key moment in the island’s political calendar. This session reflects the country’s continuing effort to maintain centralised political coordination while addressing emerging national concerns. The announcement signals that the party leadership aims to evaluate ongoing national priorities and reinforce political alignment among its members. The decision to convene the 11th plenum underscores the CCP’s ongoing strategy of maintaining stable leadership structures amid evolving domestic and international conditions.

Party leadership outlines central committee agenda for the upcoming session

The 11th Plenary Session will bring together the Central Committee of the Communist Party, with the agenda reportedly focused on several internal and national issues. The explicit convening of the session indicates that party leadership intends to oversee critical aspects of governance, evaluate the political performance of institutions, and discuss the nation’s immediate priorities. This move continues a pattern in which the Central Committee meets to recalibrate strategies in response to changing socioeconomic pressures on the island.

Economic plan, hurricane damages, and “important issues” dominate PCC agenda

Among the detailed topics expected to be addressed at the plenary are Cuba’s national economic plan, the damages caused by Melissa, and other unspecified but “important issues.” This reflects the country’s need to manage multiple crises at once, economic stagnation, infrastructure challenges following natural disasters, and the broader strain on state resources. The reference to Melissa’s damages suggests a push to coordinate governmental response efforts and reinforce recovery initiatives. At the same time, highlighting “important issues” signals the party’s recognition that a wide range of political, economic, and social concerns now require attention at the highest levels of decision-making.

Government to conduct national review of its programme to correct distortions and boost the economy

A study and analysis of the Government Program will be carried out across Cuba with the intention of correcting distortions and implementing measures to boost the national economy. This initiative reflects an acknowledgement that structural problems and inefficiencies persist within the Cuban system and that a comprehensive review is necessary to stabilise conditions. The nationwide assessment indicates that authorities aim not only to diagnose the roots of the distortions but also to develop solutions that can strengthen the economic framework. This process is expected to engage officials at various administrative levels to ensure that corrections are implemented consistently across the nation.

Debate intensifies over the impact of U.S. unilateral sanctions

The question “Are the USA’s Unilateral Sanctions on Cuba a Good Thing?” reflects the ongoing debate, both domestically and internationally, about the real impact of U.S. restrictions on the island. The discussion continues to shape public discourse, as policymakers, analysts, and citizens evaluate whether the sanctions are causing undue suffering for the population, effectively pressuring the government, or creating new geopolitical tensions. By raising the issue at this moment, the roundup shows that sanctions remain central to Cuba’s economic difficulties and political narrative. The debate also highlights the growing pressure on policymakers to either negotiate relief mechanisms or adjust internal strategies to mitigate the effects of sanctions.

In a statement shared on the social platform X, Rodríguez Parrilla urged the European Parliament to respect United Nations Resolution 2758 (1971), which recognises the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of the Chinese people.

His remarks followed a diplomatic protest by the Mission of China to the European Union , which accused the European Parliament of hosting individuals advocating Taiwan’s independence—an act Beijing described as a serious violation of China’s sovereignty.

Cuba’s declaration reflects its longstanding alignment with Beijing’s foreign policy and underscores the continuing global resonance of the “One China” principle. The position also points to the growing influence of China’s diplomatic reach, as countries and institutions around the world navigate their stances on the Taiwan issue.

Viewed in a broader international context, this episode highlights how tensions surrounding Taiwan extend well beyond East Asia , involving states such as Cuba and regional bodies like the European Parliament. It also illustrates how modern diplomacy increasingly unfolds in the digital space, where public statements and social-media messages serve as tools of foreign policy.

UN votes to end U.S. embargo on Cuba

In the latest United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote on October 29, 2025, 165 countries supported a resolution calling for an end to the decades-long U.S. embargo on Cuba. In contrast, only seven voted against and twelve abstained. It’s the 33rd time the UN has called for the embargo to be lifted, yet the United States remains firm in its position.

According to Reuters , the countries opposing the motion were the United States, Israel, Ukraine, Hungary, Paraguay, Argentina, and North Macedonia, a small group standing against near-universal consensus.

This year’s vote reflects a slight uptick in support for Washington, compared with last year’s 187-2 outcome, but the global message remains unmistakable: the world rejects the embargo.

The embargo, first imposed in 1960 and expanded in the early 1960s, restricts nearly all trade, financial transactions, and travel between the United States and Cuba.

The map accompanying the vote — dominated by green for “in favour” — shows how isolated Washington’s position is. Nearly every nation across Latin America , Africa, Asia, and Europe supported ending the embargo.

Even U.S. allies like Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom voted for the resolution. Only a handful of countries, including Argentina this year, broke ranks.

The United States last abstained on the resolution in 2016 during the Obama administration, but since then, successive governments have reinstated their opposition.

This year’s slight shift, with five more nations joining the “against” camp, reflects evolving geopolitical alignments. Ukraine’s vote , for instance, was influenced by its growing tensions with Havana after reports emerged of Cuban nationals allegedly fighting for Russia in the ongoing war. Meanwhile, Argentina’s decision marks a notable departure from Latin America’s traditionally unified stance against the embargo.

Still, the resolution is non-binding, which means it carries moral and political weight but no legal force. The embargo can only be lifted by the U.S. Congress, where opposition remains strong.

The motion, backed by the Conservatives and Reformists group and other political blocs, signals a significant change in Brussels’ approach to Havana.

If adopted into the EU’s 2026 budget, the policy would mark the first time in decades that European funds to Cuba are categorically placed under review, placing the country in an unprecedented position of diplomatic isolation. The recommendation still needs ratification by the Council of the European Union and other institutional steps before it becomes binding.

This development has broader global implications. By tying aid to human-rights performance and geopolitical alignment, Brussels is amplifying a shift seen across many Western capitals: aid is increasingly conditional. For Cuba, this means not just a potential financial loss, but a symbolic setback in its relations with Europe at a time when the island’s economy is under severe strain.

The move also reflects growing trans-Atlantic alignment on how overseas aid is used amid new global tensions. EU resources, once seen as flexible, have now become strategic tools in diplomacy, especially in the Ukraine-Russia rivalry and US-China competition. For Cuba, the decision is not just about money—it marks a possible turning point in how lesser-pressured states of the Global South may be treated when their international partnerships clash with Western strategic interests.

The organisation announced the decision after Paz’s team signalled plans to distance Bolivia from left-wing governments in the region, calling for a foreign policy shift towards democratic and market-oriented partners.

ALBA-TCP was created in 2004 by Cuba and Venezuela as an alternative to US-influenced trade and political blocs, aiming to strengthen cooperation among left-leaning Latin American countries. Bolivia, a key member for years under previous administrations, had already left and re-entered the bloc in past political cycles. The new government’s stance — seen as a break with the legacy of Evo Morales — prompted ALBA to declare Bolivia’s position “incompatible” with its founding principles.

Analysts say the suspension underscores the waning influence of ideological alliances formed during Latin America ’s early-2000s “pink tide.” As governments across the region pursue more pragmatic or centrist approaches, the continent’s once-unified leftist front appears increasingly fragmented.

On that day, John F. Kennedy announced to the American people that the Cuban Missile Crisis was underway, an explosive revelation that the Soviet Union had secretly deployed nuclear-armed missiles on the island of Cuba, only 90 miles from the U.S. mainland.

The map above captures the gravity of that confrontation: Soviet intermediate-range ballistic missile bases in Cuba, U.S. naval and air “quarantine” (blockade) zones around the island and the looming threat circle stretching deep into the continental United States .

This wasn’t just another Cold War standoff. It was arguably the moment when nuclear war crept into real possibility, when world leaders and citizens alike recognised that missteps might have unleashed catastrophe.

The roots of the crisis lay in a series of strategic moves: the United States had placed medium-range nuclear missiles in Turkey and Italy, threatening Soviet territory, while the Soviet leadership under Nikita Khrushchev responded by emplacing nuclear missiles in Cuba to counter U.S. dominance and protect the regime of Fidel Castro.

Kennedy’s October 22 speech declared that any nuclear attack launched from Cuba would be met with full retaliatory response. Through a naval “quarantine” announced publicly, the U.S. effectively blocked further Soviet shipments to the island.

Within two weeks, the tension subsided, but only after a secret agreement: the Soviets would remove the missiles from Cuba, and the U.S. would privately agree to remove certain missiles from Turkey and Italy. The parties also established a direct communication link, the famed “hotline”, to avoid being so perilously close again.

Speaking in Havana on Wednesday, Rodríguez said the Cuban government had “reliable information” indicating that US officials were pressuring several countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe, to oppose or abstain from the annual UN resolution calling for an end to the blockade. He described the alleged actions as “another example of the coercive diplomacy that isolates Washington, not Cuba.”

The US embargo, first imposed in the 1960s, remains one of the world ’s longest-standing economic sanctions. While the Obama administration made limited moves towards normalisation, President Donald Trump reversed those policies and re-added Cuba to the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. The Biden administration has so far maintained most of those restrictions.

Cuba’s resolution condemning the blockade has been presented annually at the UN General Assembly since 1992, consistently receiving overwhelming support. In the most recent vote, 187 countries backed the motion, with only the United States and Israel opposing it. The next debate and vote are scheduled for 28 October.

For Havana, the resolution serves as both a diplomatic reaffirmation and a political weapon, a way to highlight Washington’s isolation on the global stage. For the United States, however, the vote remains largely symbolic, underscoring a standoff that has lasted for more than six decades and shows little sign of easing.

Responding to critics who accuse his government of aligning with leftist regimes, Lula declared, “Everyone says we’re going to turn Brazil into Venezuela. But Brazil will never be Venezuela, and Venezuela will never be Brazil, each country will be itself.” He emphasised that “the Venezuelan people are the ones who must decide their own destiny,” rejecting the idea that any foreign leader has the right to dictate how nations such as Venezuela or Cuba should govern themselves.

The Brazilian president also came to Cuba’s defence, calling it “a nation of dignity” and pushing back against claims that the island supports terrorism. “Cuba is not a country that exports terrorists,” Lula stated, as attendees applauded and chanted his name.

Lula’s remarks come amid renewed geopolitical tensions in the region, as Brazil seeks to position itself as a mediator rather than a follower of Washington’s or Caracas’s agendas. His comments reflect a broader effort to assert Latin American autonomy on the global stage while reinforcing Brazil’s traditional foreign policy principle of non-intervention.

The event, attended by party members and supporters, underscored Lula’s ongoing attempt to unite Brazil’s left-wing base ahead of a challenging economic and political year, balancing domestic priorities with a message of regional solidarity.

The accolade was presented during the World Conservation Congress held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to the Cuban ambassador, Norberto Carlos Escalona Carrillo.

The award celebrates the excellence of Cuba’s National Biodiversity Programme through 2030, developed under the supervision of Cuba’s Ministry of Science , Technology and Environment (CITMA). Its strategy emphasises science-based measures, citizen participation, and concrete conservation actions.

Cuba was among 26 countries selected worldwide for their outstanding commitment to biodiversity. These nations were honoured for their national biodiversity strategies (EPANB), which align with global goals under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

In Cuba’s case, the EPANB is integrated with the country’s broader environmental and climate policy framework — including the Tarea Vida (Life Task) programme and Cuba’s National Development Plan to 2030 — reflecting a systemic approach to conservation and sustainability.

The awarding body, the International Reverse the Red Coalition, is led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners. It honours countries that craft and implement biodiversity action plans with scientific rigour, transparency, stakeholder inclusion and alignment with global standards.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez used his address at the 80th UN General Assembly to denounce what he described as an “extraordinary” and “unjustifiable” US military deployment in the Caribbean, warning that it posed a looming threat of war and undermined regional peace .

“In the Caribbean Sea, today looms the threat of war with an extraordinary naval and aerial deployment of an offensive nature. Absolutely unjustifiable, with missiles, landing and assault craft, and nuclear submarines. Ballistic missiles with nuclear capacity are being launched as tests. The United States uses the pretext of fighting crime and drug trafficking, a myth that no one in this room believes”, Rodríguez told delegates in New York.

He reaffirmed Havana’s “total support” for Venezuela and President Nicolás Maduro, condemned Washington’s actions as violations of international law, and expressed “firm solidarity” with the Palestinian people, accusing Israel of carrying out genocide in Gaza with US backing.

Rodríguez also reiterated Cuba’s rejection of unilateral sanctions against countries such as Belarus, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Iran and Russia , while stressing that the US embargo on Cuba remains a “prolonged economic war” aimed at depriving its citizens of basic means of livelihood.

ALBA-TCP rejects U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean

On September 25, 2025, the Political Council of ALBA-TCP rejected what it called an “unjustified” U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean, denouncing the interception of the Venezuela n vessel Carmen Rosa by a U.S. Navy destroyer. The bloc reaffirmed support for President Nicolás Maduro and dismissed U.S. reports labelling Venezuela a drug transit country as “false narratives” aimed at regime change.

Díaz-Canel promises stability at Renté thermoelectric plant

During a September 25 visit to the Antonio Maceo (Renté) thermoelectric plant in Santiago de Cuba, President Miguel Díaz-Canel pledged that the facility would reach “stability” before the end of 2025. His statement came despite continuous outages, technical failures and even fatal accidents at the plant. Díaz-Canel blamed U.S. sanctions for hampering maintenance and argued that the government’s combined strategy of repairs and new solar projects would improve supply. However, electricity deficits of more than 1,700 MW continue to trigger blackouts lasting over 20 hours in some provinces, deepening public frustration.

Cuban foreign minister denounces U.S. blockade at UNGA

At the 80th UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla denounced the U.S. economic blockade and its severe effects on Cuba’s access to food, medicine, transport and energy development. He also criticised U.S. military actions in the Caribbean and accused Washington of supporting Israel’s “genocide” against Palestinians. Rodríguez stressed the need for unity among developing nations under the G77 and China, condemned Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, and warned that the blockade undermines climate action projects such as Cuba’s national solar energy plan.

Council of State evaluates economic and legislative measures

On September 25, the Cuban Council of State, led by Esteban Lazo Hernández, reviewed progress on economic recovery programmes and municipal development strategies. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz reported on preparations for the 2026 economic plan, updates to the government’s programme to “correct distortions”, and legislative advances, including food and fisheries regulations. The session also approved a decree law on honorary titles and decorations, while lawmakers examined compliance with measures under the Ministry of Food Industry and the national fisheries law.

Prosecutors seek nine-year sentences for protesters

Cuban prosecutors have requested sentences of up to nine years in prison for six men accused of participating in a peaceful “cacerolazo” protest against power outages in Encrucijada, Villa Clara, in November 2024. Among them is independent journalist José Gabriel Barrenechea. Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights, denounced the trial as an attempt to criminalise dissent. Activists also reported the detention of opposition figure Guillermo “Coco” Fariñas while trying to attend the hearing. The case follows similar trials in 2024, highlighting the government’s hard line on public demonstrations.

During a meeting in Caracas with Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s president, Roberto Morales Ojeda — secretary of organisation of Cuba’s Communist Party — pledged Havana’s solidarity and confirmed that “millions of Cubans” would endorse the Cuban government’s recent declaration of support for Venezuela. The campaign is also framed as a broader call to the international community, particularly members of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Maduro emphasised the need for joint efforts with global impact, describing Cuba and Venezuela as carrying forward the vision of Simón Bolívar, José Martí, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez. “We must elevate our project to a higher level”, he said, urging coordinated action to defend both nations’ positions on the world stage.

The initiative comes as Havana and Caracas deepen their cooperation under agreements signed in 2023 between the Communist Party of Cuba and Venezuela’s ruling Socialist Party. Morales Ojeda also held talks with Jorge Rodríguez, head of Venezuela’s National Assembly, and Rander Peña, executive secretary of ALBA, stressing the importance of legislative, political and regional coordination to counter what both governments describe as “imperialist aggression”.

Despite Cuba’s worsening economic crisis under tightened US sanctions , Morales Ojeda said solidarity with Venezuela remains a priority: “We share not what we have left over, but what we have”.

US sanctions key Cuban officials

The US government has imposed sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and other top officials, marking the anniversary of the July 2021 protests. According to the US Department of State, the sanctions include visa restrictions for officials associated with the regime's violent response to the protests, which resulted in widespread detentions and abuses. The US continues to advocate for human rights in Cuba and prohibits funding to properties linked to the regime.

Human rights abuses identified in Cuban prisons

Human Rights Watch reports significant abuses against protesters detained following the July 2021 demonstrations in Cuba. The organisation highlights arbitrary arrests and deplorable prison conditions, including overcrowding and lack of medical care. Former detainees have reported brutal treatment and punitive measures against those who complained. HRW calls for international support for human rights promotion in Cuba amidst an ongoing economic crisis.

Cuban national arrested for driving offence

Yordano Herrera, a 34-year-old native of Cuba, was arrested for driving with a suspended licence, following a DUI conviction. Law enforcement officials in Sumter County discovered his vehicle registration was expired, leading to a check of his driving history, which revealed multiple suspensions. He was charged with expired registration and driving on a suspended licence. Herrera was later released on bail after his arrest.

OFAC fines U.S. firm $600,000 for Cuba shipments

Key Holding, LLC, a Delaware-based logistics firm, will pay a $608,825 fine to the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC for potential violations of Cuba sanctions . Between Jan 2022 and Jul 2023, its Colombian subsidiary coordinated 36 shipments to Cuba worth over $3 million. OFAC found 33 shipments unauthorised under its rules, including food, machinery parts, and goods bound for Cuban state-owned entities. At the time, neither Key Holding nor its subsidiary had an OFAC compliance program in place, leading to unintentional breaches of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations.

Cuba intensifies push for renewable energy

As reported by the Cuban news agency ACN on June 11, the United Nations Development Organisation (UNIDO) in collaboration with experts, has initiated a project aimed at decarbonising key sectors within Cuba through innovative climate solutions. UNIDO's project associate Ivette Tortosa reported that a two-million-dollar grant from the Global Environment Facility would facilitate the implementation of projects targeting the reduction of greenhouse gases, focusing on households, tourist facilities, and industries. Advocate José Antonio la Cal Herrera emphasised the role of bioenergy as a crucial tool for Cuba's energy transition, enhancing security and supply across the island.

Cuban students oppose economic dollarisation

According to AFP, Cuban students have organised a movement against the rising dollarisation within the country, triggered by an increase in mobile internet tariffs effective May 30. The new tariff structure by state telecom company Etecsa pushed rates drastically higher for Cuban peso users while favouring dollar-based top-ups. Students from various universities have initiated class boycotts and issued statements challenging the inequality that dollarisation represents. Despite government efforts to address the discontent, including dialogue forums, student opposition remains strong, indicating a significant plea for equality and policy change.

Mayor of Cuba found in ethics violation

Target 7 reports on Mayor Denny Herrera of Cuba, N.M., who was found in violation of the Government Conduct Act following an investigation by the State Ethics Commission. The probe revealed that Herrera profited illicitly from city orders directing employees to refuel at his gas station, leading to financial misconduct. Although Herrara argues that the directive predated his election, he has settled to pay $3,500 in total and was required to disclose his ownership of the station. Former Fire Chief Rick Romero's actions in filing a complaint resulted in his demotion, raising suspicions of retaliatory conduct pending legal review.

Cuban students' digital protest and economic woes

Cuban students, frustrated by increased internet service prices, have organised protests demanding both accountability and resignations from educational and governmental administrations, according to l ocal correspondence . With mobile data pricing now anchored heavily in US currency, students argue this approach magnifies existing socio-economic divides. State-run Etecsa’s President Tania Velázquez cited a dire lack of foreign currency as a reason for the hikes. Yet, students urge for a broadened discourse, questioning Cuba's increasing departure from socialist principles, and criticising the government's positioning amidst the decades-long US embargo.

Guyana redefines role of Cuban health workers

The Guyana government plans to redefine employment terms for Cuban health professionals amid broader international recruitment efforts for upcoming hospitals, according to CNW Network. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo outlined the intent to comply with US restrictions concerning allegations of 'forced labour' within Cuba’s medical missions. The Guyana administration is actively engaging with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's concerns by requesting evidence of malpractice, while emphasising a balance between local and foreign healthcare personnel contributions to meet growing service demand as new medical facilities launch.

The measure, published on the ministry’s official X account (formerly Twitter), aims to strengthen security and immigration control.

According to the statement, Ecuador “will request transit visas from those nationals in transit from countries that currently require visas to enter the country and from those determined by the human mobility authority.”

Although the effective date and application process have not been detailed, the ministry clarified that the requirement is part of broader efforts to combat transnational organised crime, particularly human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Ecuador currently requires entry visas from citizens of 45 countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, China, Afghanistan, Iran, and several African and Asian states.

Under the new policy , citizens of these nations will also need a transit visa, even if they are not staying in Ecuador.

A new report by the Cuban Observatory of Currencies and Finance (OMFi) shows that more businesses are now operating mainly in dollars, marking what it says is a clear policy shift by the government.

The report says the current trend is no longer a reaction to market forces but a deliberate step toward dollarisation.

At the end of April, the average monthly salary in Cuba was 5,839 pesos. At the informal exchange rate of 370 pesos to the dollar, that is worth just $15.78, sharply reducing the purchasing power of most workers.

For pensioners, the situation is even worse , with the minimum pension now worth about $4.13.

The report warns that the growing use of foreign currency, including digital ones like the MLC, is widening the gap between Cubans who have access to dollars and those who do not.

State companies in select industries such as tourism and biotechnology are allowed to keep part of their foreign currency earnings, while others and most ordinary citizens are still stuck with the weakening peso.

Meanwhile, the Cuban government reported a budget surplus in March 2025, a rare occurrence in recent years.

However, the surplus came after cutting spending in areas like social services and raising prices on basic goods such as fuel and electricity, moves that may hurt low-income households.

Experts say more people are leaving the island, especially young workers, while fewer babies are being born and the number of elderly people keeps growing.

New figures show that by the end of 2024, Cuba had about 9.7 million people. That’s a drop of over 300,000 in just one year. The number of people living in Cuba has been falling fast over the last decade, especially since the economy started to struggle.

In 2012, Cuba had around 11.2 million people. Since then, the country has lost about 13 percent of its population.

Many Cubans, especially young adults, are leaving the island in search of better jobs and living conditions and leaving behind the older population.

Today, one in four Cubans is aged 60 or above.

“A quarter of the island's population is aged 60 and over, and it is the only demographic category that has grown in recent years,” said Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, a top official at Cuba’s National Office of Statistics.

The number of births in 2024 hit a new low since the Cuban revolution in 1959. There were only 71,000 babies born, compared to 90,000 in 2023.

In addition, more people are dying each year, adding to the population drop.

The decrease in population is raising huge concerns for Cubans.

The president of the Latin American nation made this known during a high-profile meeting at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana with Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO).

“We ratify once again Cuba's unwavering commitment to peace, to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and to the non-performance of nuclear tests,” Díaz-Canel said during the meeting.

The Cuban leader praised the long-standing relationship between Cuba and the CTBTO, and expressed gratitude for the organization's support in developing the country's scientific and institutional capabilities in nuclear monitoring and disarmament efforts.

Díaz-Canel also commended Floyd’s personal dedication to building what he described as a “robust, armored, effective, and efficient verification system” for nuclear weapons testing, Granma reports.

He also acknowledged the CTBTO's support in training Cuban experts, facilitating access to international data, and enhancing Cuba’s scientific programs and comparative studies related to nuclear monitoring and policy .

Reflecting on global nuclear tensions, Floyd noted the continued relevance of Cuba’s role, especially in light of its early commitment to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Cuba was among the first five nations to ratify the treaty, doing so in January 2018—just months after signing it at the UN in September 2017.

“Even in these dark times for global disarmament efforts, our organisation remains a flame,” Floyd said.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons officially entered into force on January 22, 2021, as part of global efforts to eliminate nuclear arms.

Michael, a 40-year-old math teacher in Havana, recently experienced this firsthand while shopping with his son. As they entered a newly opened store located on the ground floor of a luxury hotel in the upscale Miramar neighborhood, they were immediately informed that purchases could only be made in U.S. dollars.

"We had barely set foot inside when they told me payment was in dollars," Michael told AFP, declining to provide his last name.

The state-owned supermarket, which opened in January, is the first of several planned dollar-denominated stores aimed at reviving Cuba’s struggling economy . While officials see these stores as a means to attract much-needed foreign currency, their existence highlights growing inequality, as many Cubans who earn in the local peso find themselves unable to shop in these exclusive outlets.

Cuban electricity mostly restored

Cuba’s electricity issues have mostly been resolved, with much of Havana reconnected by Sunday night, Reuters reports. A blackout that began Friday night—caused by a substation short—left over 10 million people without power, highlighting the strain on Cuba’s ageing, oil-dependent grid. It was the country’s fourth major grid collapse since October 2024. According to Travel Pulse Canada , Canada’s travel advisory warns visitors of ongoing power shortages, noting that while resorts have generators, outages may still affect service.

Project on climate change adaptation makes strides in Cuba

The “Mi Costa” project, led by Cuba’s Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment with support from national and international partners, aims to boost climate resilience along 1,300 km of Cuba’s southern coast through ecosystem-based adaptation. ACN reports that over an eight-year implementation period and 22-year operation, it covers 24 municipalities across seven provinces, offering training and workshops for officials and communities. The project focuses on climate adaptation, water and soil management, coastal ecosystems, and blue carbon initiatives in mangroves, seagrasses, peatlands, and more.

Trump wants 30,000 migrants held at U.S. Base in Cuba

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a controversial proposal to detain up to 30,000 migrants at the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay, reigniting debate over the use of the remote military facility for immigration enforcement. According to reporting by CNN’s Patrick Oppmann , the plan would represent a dramatic expansion of the base's role in U.S. immigration policy. While Guantánamo Bay is most often associated with its detention facility for terror suspects, it has also been used in the past to house migrants — most notably during the 1990s Haitian and Cuban migration crises, when thousands were temporarily held at the base.

Thousands of supporters gathered to commemorate the occasion under the theme of renewal and survival.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is both the leader of the ANC and the head of state, addressed the crowd, reaffirming the party's commitment to its founding principles while acknowledging the challenges faced in the wake of the 2024 election results.

Ramaphosa assured attendees that the ANC’s core values remain intact despite recent political setbacks.

“The false notion that the character and strategy of the ANC have now been redefined by a single tactic of forming a broad inclusive government of national unity is really a distortion of the realities our movement faces and should be dismissed out of hand,” Ramaphosa stated during his speech.

The president emphasised that the party has taken the election outcome as an opportunity for introspection and tactical renewal, seeking to strengthen its position and reconnect with its grassroots base.

Global Solidarity and Peace Calls

In addition to addressing domestic issues, Ramaphosa used the platform to reiterate South Africa’s solidarity with international struggles for justice and peace. He called for the lifting of the decades-long U.S. economic blockade on Cuba and urged for the removal of Cuba from the list of terrorist states.

“Our support for the people of Palestine continues unabated, particularly as we continue with the case in the International Court of Justice to support the struggle of the Palestinians,” Ramaphosa said.

Evacuees from recent explosions in eastern Cuba are returning home as authorities deem their residences no longer at risk. The Ministry of the Interior (MINFAR) noted that while specialised actions continue near the incident site, access remains restricted due to ongoing explosions. According to Prensa Latina , Major Leonar Palma Matos, Major Carlos Carreño del Río, and several soldiers are still reported missing following the January 7 incident at a construction site storing war materials. MINFAR is maintaining contact with relatives of the missing and will provide updates as conditions change.

India sends humanitarian aid in medicines to Cuba

India has sent humanitarian aid to Cuba, including antibiotics, antipyretics, analgesics, oral solutions, and muscle relaxants, as confirmed by the Indian Foreign Ministry. This aid highlights the close ties between the two nations, which are celebrating 65 years of diplomatic relations. In June 2024, India previously sent 90 tons of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to Cuba to produce essential medicines. As reported by Prensa Latina , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that this assistance reaffirms India's commitment to its historic friendship with Cuba and its role as the "Pharmacy of the World."

US finds no ‘Havana syndrome’ link to foreign powers

U.S. intelligence has found no evidence directly linking foreign powers to the mysterious "Havana syndrome" suffered by U.S. diplomats and personnel. A review by seven intelligence agencies concluded that it is very unlikely a foreign adversary is responsible for the reported injuries, which include headaches and cognitive issues. However, as highlighted by AP , two agencies suggested the possibility that a foreign power could have developed or deployed a weapon causing these symptoms, though they expressed low confidence in this assessment. The incidents first reported in Cuba in 2016 have prompted calls for further investigation, but officials have yet to identify a definitive cause. The Biden administration emphasised the need for continued research and investigation into the matter.

German donation benefits pediatric cancer patients in Cuba

A Germany-based humanitarian project called “Caricias,” led by Cuban Jorge Garcia, made a significant donation to a paediatric cancer ward at a hospital in Santa Clara, Cuba. The donation included medical supplies and technology, such as binocular microscopes and blood cell counters. Since 2018, “Caricias” has been supporting the Jose Luis Miranda paediatric hospital, providing various resources to improve the quality of life for children with cancer, amidst challenges posed by the US blockade. On average, 400 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer annually in Cuba, making it a leading cause of death in young children, ACN reports.

According to María Cristina Lara Bastanzuri, the national director for Medical Technology and Medications, the lack of financing and resources has accounted for the problem.

She added that this has been worsened by the long-standing US economic blockade against Cuba.

Speaking to the Parliament’s Health Commission , Lara Bastanzuri explained that 80% of Cuba’s medicines are produced locally. However, only 24% of both common and essential medications are currently available in drugstores.

Difficulties in the transportation of raw materials and finished drugs, as well as a shortage of containers, according to her, have also contributed to the problem.

Production of natural medicines has also been disrupted due to a lack of key items like vegetables, refined sugar, and alcohol, she added.

Following her submissions, Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martinez called for urgent action to address the crisis, urging officials to focus on alternative medicines and improve the working conditions and facilities of drugstores.

Meanwhile, Cuba’s Parliament commissions are working on these issues ahead of the National Assembly’s fourth session, which begins on December 18. The government is seeking ways to ease the shortages and improve access to essential medicines.

The US embargo , first imposed in 1962, has been a contentious issue for over six decades. Initially enacted in response to the nationalisation of American-owned properties in Cuba, the embargo has evolved into a comprehensive set of economic, commercial, and financial restrictions.

Despite numerous calls from the international community to lift the embargo, it remains firmly in place, significantly affecting Cuba's economy and its people.

During a press conference on Thursday, September 13, The foreign affairs minister of the country, Bruno Rodriguez, explained that "From March 1, 2023, to February 29 of this year, the blockade caused material damage and losses to Cuba amounting to 5.056 billion dollars."

In response, he urged the current US President, Joe Biden, to ease the sanctions in the remaining months of his tenure.

"The only honest, responsible, and serious thing the current occupant of the White House (President Joe Biden) could do would be to modify, in the remaining period of his term, the blockade policies he inherited earlier but has applied intensely and strictly."

The island nation's efforts to get the sanctions off its back is reflected in its unrelenting submission of documents of dissolution to the United Nations General Assembly for almost three decades.

In a recent document presented to the assembly, the country stated “It is not permissible, legal or ethical, that for decades a small country be subjected to a criminal policy of suffocation, with economic damages that exceed 164.,141.1 billion dollars at current prices.”
