The roll-on/roll-off ship Changzhou , designed to carry up to 7,000 vehicles, unloaded around 5,800 cars destined for the Argentine market, according to BYD’s local representative, Stephen Deng.

The shipment aligns with Argentina’s policy of opening imports of electrified vehicles, which allows up to 50,000 electric and hybrid cars per year to enter the country without the standard 35 per cent extra-zone tariff if technical requirements are met. Economy Minister Luis Caputo said the move aims to boost competition, lower vehicle prices and widen consumer access, as Argentina’s electric and hybrid market continues rapid growth, with registrations rising sharply over the past two years.

China's BYD becomes world’s top electric vehicle seller surpassing Tesla

Tesla reported on Friday that it sold 1.64 million vehicles globally in 2025, a decline of nearly 9% from the previous year and its second straight annual drop in deliveries. The figures place Tesla behind BYD, which announced a day earlier that its battery-electric vehicle sales surged by almost 28% last year to more than 2.25 million units.

The downturn reflects a challenging year for Tesla, shaped by a lukewarm response to new models, growing unease among some consumers and investors over Elon Musk’s political involvement, and intensifying competition from lower-priced Chinese rivals. Tesla’s sales fell sharply toward the end of the year, dropping 16% in the final quarter of 2025.

Part of that decline followed the repeal of a US government subsidy that had reduced the cost of certain electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by up to $7,500, weakening demand. In response to softer sales, Tesla launched lower-priced versions of its two best-selling models in the US in October in an effort to regain momentum.

Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, Geely and MG, have steadily gained ground by offering electric vehicles at prices below those of many established Western brands.

Despite losing its top spot in sales volume, Tesla has remained more profitable than BYD in recent quarters. Still, investors are closely watching how Musk steers the company through the next phase of its growth.

Under a pay deal approved by shareholders in November, Musk stands to receive a record-breaking compensation package that could be worth up to $1 trillion over the next decade, provided Tesla meets ambitious targets for sales growth and market value. The agreement also requires Tesla to sell one million humanoid robots over the next ten years, tied to heavy investment in its “Optimus” robot and self-driving “robotaxi” technology .

Analysts say Tesla’s planned rollout of self-driving services and robotaxis in 2026 will be critical to its future performance. While questions remain over the feasibility and regulation of full autonomy, some remain bullish.

Meanwhile, BYD’s rapid rise has not been without challenges. Its sales growth slowed in 2025 to the weakest pace in five years, partly due to fierce competition within China. Yet the Shenzhen-based company continues to expand aggressively overseas, particularly in Latin America , Southeast Asia and Europe, even as several countries impose steep tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

In October, BYD said the UK had become its largest market outside China, with sales in Britain jumping 880% in the year to the end of September. The surge was driven largely by strong demand for the plug-in hybrid version of its Seal U sports utility vehicle.

Fraud claims against digital banks surge

Scam and fraud claims against Singapore’s digital banks have more than doubled in 2025, with 94 cases reported in the first eight months, up from 42 in all of 2024. The Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre (Fidrec) said these cases, worth S$2.5 million, mainly involved compromised credentials and impersonation scams, Straits Times reports. Victims were often deceived by phishing or scammers posing as officials. Fidrec added that claims against digital banks rose from 2.1% of total cases in 2023 to 8.7% in 2025, signalling a worrying trend as online banking expands.

Two Singaporeans arrested in Cambodia-based scam ring

Two Singaporean men, Wayne Soh You Chen and Brian Sie Eng Fa, have been deported and arrested for their alleged roles in a Cambodia-based scam syndicate accused of running government official impersonation scams. The syndicate, believed to be led by fugitive Ng Wei Liang, allegedly defrauded victims in at least 438 cases, costing S$41 million. Straits Times reports both men were captured abroad after months on the run, while 32 other members, including 25 Singaporeans and 7 Malaysians, remain at large.

Autonomous vehicle testing

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has greenlit Grab and WeRide to conduct autonomous vehicle testing for their Ai.R fleet in Punggol. The trial will pave the way for Singapore’s first public autonomous shuttle service by early 2026. The service will link residents to key areas such as Punggol Coast MRT, bus interchanges, and shopping malls, Business Times reports. The AVs, trained to navigate local road conditions and weather, will gather real-world data to enhance their AI driving models. The programme will see test runs increase fourfold by year-end.

Study links heavy social media use to mental distress

A national mental health study by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) has found that young people who spend over three hours daily on social media are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and stress. Based on interviews with 2,600 respondents aged 15 - 35, the research showed that 30.6% reported severe symptoms, while cyberbullying and body image issues were strong contributing factors. IMH noted that youth with higher resilience and social support were less likely to suffer mental health strain. The study was conducted with the Ministry of Health and NUS’s Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, Today Online reports.

5.5% - 7.5% pay rise for low-wage workers

The National Wages Council (NWC) has urged employers to grant built-in wage increases of 5.5% to 7.5% for workers earning up to S$2,700 a month from December 2025 to November 2026. Firms performing well should raise pay at the higher end of the range or by at least S$105 - S$125. The move, which covers about 57,600 workers, comes amid modest GDP growth of 1.5% - 2.5% for 2025 and persistent cost pressures. The council also announced higher pay floors for administrators and drivers under the Occupational Progressive Wages scheme, set to take effect in July 2026.

Spiro, which has deployed 65,000 electric motorbikes across six African countries and built hundreds of swap stations, has raised US $100 million to scale up production and create thousands of new jobs while cutting carbon emissions across the continent’s fastest-growing transport sector.

In an interview with Global South World, the CEO of Spiro, Kaushik Burman, explained how the African company has found not just a market, but a mission.

“I love Africa,” he said. “I’ve already converted myself to Africa. I love the spirit of Africa.”

The African company is behind what is now Africa’s largest-ever investment in electric mobility. In October 2025, Spiro closed a US$100 million funding round .

Spiro began not in a boardroom, but in a field. Its founder, Gagan Gupta, who also leads the Equitane and Arise groups, was visiting an agricultural site in rural Togo when he witnessed how costly and difficult gasoline transport had become. The realisation sparked an idea: if the continent could leapfrog to mobile banking, why not leapfrog to electric mobility?

By 2022, Spiro had launched its first fleets in Benin and Togo, two West African neighbours whose bustling motorcycle taxi networks are the lifeblood of local economies. In less than three years, the company has expanded into six countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Benin and Togo and is preparing to enter its seventh, Cameroon.

The overall African two-wheeler market is estimated at US $9.15 billion in 2025, and projected to reach US $11.11 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 4.97%.

65,000 electric motorbikes have been deployed, nearly 2,000 battery-swap stations already operating, 20 million battery swaps and a target to double that to 4,000 by year’s end. Each station works like a miniature power hub. Riders pull in, exchange their depleted batteries for fully charged ones in under five minutes, and ride off.

“Think of it like filling up gas,” Burman explains. “Except this time, you’re filling up with clean power.”

Riders pay only for the energy they consume, eliminating the up-front battery cost that often makes EVs unaffordable.

According to Burman, a typical rider saves between US$1.50 and $2 a day compared to petrol bikes, a small figure that translates into life-changing relief for many in Africa’s informal transport sector.

“That’s school fees. That’s food on the table,” Burman said.

Spiro has already created over 10,000 jobs across its six markets, from factory workers and engineers to sales teams and swap-station operators. Its Spiro Academy, launched last year, trains local youth and women in assembly, servicing, and maintenance. Nearly 45 percent of the company’s workforce is made up of women.

“It’s not just about mobility,” Burman insists. “It’s about dignity. It’s about creating pathways into the financial ecosystem for people who were left out.”

Every Spiro bike on the road saves about two tonnes of CO₂ per year compared with a petrol motorcycle.

The environmental argument is matched by a macroeconomic one. Many African nations spend billions of dollars importing fuel each year. By reducing dependence on petrol, Spiro’s model helps conserve foreign exchange and stabilise local currencies.

Across the continent, electric mobility is accelerating. The Africa E-Mobility Alliance reports that electric two- and three-wheelers grew by 38 percent year-on-year in 2025. Research firm Mordor Intelligence projects Africa’s two-wheeler market to reach US $11 billion by 2029, with electric models leading growth.

For Spiro, the next phase is growth — in capital, markets, and impact. The company plans to raise more funds to scale its manufacturing footprint and extend its swap network. But the vision is long-term.

In a world too used to seeing Africa as a consumer of technology , Spiro is flipping the script — turning the Global South into the stage for the next industrial revolution.

From July to September, BYD’s profit plummeted by 33% to 7.92 billion yuan ($1.1 billion). Its total revenue absorbed a softer 3% drop to 194.98 billion yuan ($27.3 billion), though this stilled missed the 216 billion yuan ($30.30 billion) estimate.

Here are some factors behind the slump

With global expansion accelerating and high-end models on the horizon, BYD’s next growth phase is expected to depend on whether it can stabilise margins and outpace China’s fierce EV rivalry.

What’s behind China’s manganese rush in Gabon?

Roughly 90% of global manganese consumption goes into steelmaking, according to the US Geological Survey, 2024 , and China produces more than half of the world’s steel.

Beyond steel , manganese is vital in nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and lithium-manganese oxide (LMO) batteries, technologies central to China’s EV sector. Ensuring steady, high-grade supplies has therefore become essential to Beijing’s industrial strategy.

Gabon is the world’s second-largest producer of manganese, with reserves estimated at 250 million tonnes, concentrated in the Moanda region. Its ore, often exceeding 46% manganese content, is among the highest quality globally.

Until now, Gabon largely exported raw ore, with limited local processing. But that model is changing as Libreville has announced a ban on raw manganese exports from 2029, requiring foreign companies to invest in domestic processing. Mines Minister Gilles Nembé has described the policy as a step to make Gabon “a competitive industrial hub in the mining sector.”

In September, a delegation of seven Chinese firms met Gabonese authorities to propose building an integrated industrial zone for manganese processing. Companies such as Inner Mongolia Xinchuan Metallurgy pledged to transfer smelting technology and establish facilities for alloys and battery-grade products. This approach goes beyond mining, embedding China deeper into Gabon’s value chain.

China’s push comes amid rising competition from Japanese investors, who also signalled plans in July 2025 to invest in Gabon’s processing industry, seeking to secure supplies for steelmaking and EV technologies while diversifying away from Chinese dominance.

For Gabon, these rival bids offer leverage with foreign competition accelerating investment, expanding job creation, and boosting value-added industries. For China, securing processed manganese in Gabon reduces reliance on volatile global markets while tightening control over critical mineral supply chains.

As the 2029 export ban nears, Gabon’s manganese could become a flashpoint in the global race for battery metals, shaping Africa ’s role in the green energy transition and testing how far China’s industrial strategy can reach.

This facility will produce essential components for electric vehicle batteries, including cathodes and anodes. It aims to supply European automakers, Morocco’s local automotive sector, and the renewable energy storage markets across Africa and the Middle East.

The project is designed to significantly boost employment, with the initial development phase expected to generate 2,300 jobs. Across its full five-phase plan, the gigafactory is projected to create up to 10,000 jobs. The first phase alone is expected to result in 17,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2026 with an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which is expected to scale up to 100 GWh.

What this means

Unlike many other plants that rely on imported materials, this facility will manufacture the core materials required for battery production. By producing electrode materials such as cathodes and anodes on-site, the factory offers Morocco enhanced supply chain security and cost competitiveness. This vertical integration reduces reliance on foreign imports and strengthens Morocco’s autonomy in the high-tech manufacturing space .

Around 85% of the batteries produced at the site will be exported to the European Union. This helps reduce Europe’s dependence on Asian markets and shortens supply chains for the automotive sector. Morocco is shifting from being an assembly point to a key manufacturing hub serving one of the largest consumer markets globally.

The gigafactory’s development will follow a modular roadmap. It will commence with a first stage in 2026 and expand progressively as contracts and funding are secured. This approach is designed to allow flexibility and scalability in response to evolving energy market dynamics.

Local production of essential battery components will help Morocco reduce its import dependency. The project's vertical integration is expected to stabilise regional supply chains and strengthen Morocco's competitive position amid growing global demand for battery technology.

This initiative also marks a strategic shift for Africa. By building manufacturing capabilities on the continent, the project offers a model for transitioning from raw material exportation to high-value industrial production. It allows African countries to gain more economic value from their natural resources.

China-Morocco partnership

China remains Morocco’s third-largest global trading partner and its largest in Asia. In 2024, bilateral trade amounted to $9.04 billion, with China exporting $7.74 billion and importing $1.3 billion from Morocco, China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry reported.

The partnership reflects China's expanding economic involvement in Africa. It aligns with China’s strategy of combining infrastructure investment with industrial development in the clean energy sector.

For Morocco, the gigafactory represents a step forward into high-tech manufacturing, economic diversification, and a strengthened role as a strategic link between Africa, Asia, and Europe in the global green economy.

China's broader investment strategy in Africa

In May, China pledged to increase its investment across Africa.

Shen Xiang, Director of the West Asia and Africa Department at China’s Ministry of Commerce, stated , “African countries have seen steady economic development in recent years, with the overall business environment continuing to improve and the willingness of Chinese firms to invest in the continent significantly growing.”

According to Shen, annual direct investment from Chinese firms in Africa has exceeded $3 billion over the past five years, covering a variety of sectors.

Deputy Trade Minister Zuko Godlimpi told lawmakers this week that the country is encouraging Chinese companies to invest directly in hybrid and electric vehicle production, to tap into global demand, Semafor reports.

“We are asking them to invest in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles because that is the market that they are servicing globally,” Godlimpi said.

Chinese brands such as Chery and Haval have grown their footprint in South Africa by offering cheaper internal-combustion engine cars than their American and Japanese rivals.

Shenzhen-based BYD, one of China’s largest electric vehicle makers, is also expanding rapidly, planning to raise its number of dealerships in South Africa from 13 to at least 30 by next year.

The government plans to raise import taxes so that cheap foreign cars do not undercut local manufacturing, creating pressure on Chinese companies to consider assembling vehicles in South Africa.

By urging Chinese firms to build factories locally, South Africa hopes to protect its domestic auto sector, which remains one of the continent’s most industrialised.

The certification was issued on Wednesday in Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate, during a ceremony attended by top officials, including Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, and Zhang Yiming, China’s ambassador to the UAE.

The permit was formally presented to Zhao Deli, founder of XPENG AEROHT, who praised the UAE’s “open innovation environment” as an ideal testbed for validating flying car technology.

UAE officials say they envision a strategic use of the vehicle to transform public services, including government transport, that is, fast, flexible mobility for official delegations and inter-emirate travel; tourism, offering visitors scenic aerial experiences that merge luxury with futuristic tech; and emergency rescue, rapid deployment in medical evacuations or disaster response, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

At the event, they signed a memorandum of understanding with XPENG AEROHT to collaborate on flight testing certification and real-world applications.

“This partnership enhances the UAE’s global position in smart mobility and low-carbon transport. It also serves as a demonstration for the wider Middle East,” said Esmaeel Al Blooshi, the director general of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority.

Though at the testing and demo phase, the flying car is a fully electric aircraft designed for urban use with key features including an intelligent large display and single-stick control system; automatic and manual modes for ease of operation; an advanced flight control system to boost safety; low noise levels; and an environmentally friendly design.

The global automotive industry continues to be defined by concentration, and the latest production statistics from the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers ( OICA ) underscore just how uneven the landscape has become.

In 2024, the world built 92.5 million motor vehicles (passenger cars and commercial vehicles combined). A visualisation of OICA’s data from the World in Maps divides this total into three equal segments of roughly 33.3 % each and shows that a single country, China, accounts for an entire third of global vehicle output on its own.

China assembled 27,476,886 passenger cars and 3,804,706 commercial vehicles in 2024, bringing its total production to 31,281,592 vehicles. That figure represents about 34% of all cars and trucks built worldwide, far more than any other country. China’s output has been kept afloat by large domestic demand and aggressive expansion in electric vehicles; it recorded a 4% increase over the previous year.

After China, the next tier of manufacturers is led by Japan, the United States, India, Mexico and South Korea. In 2024, Japan produced 8,234,681 vehicles, while the United States built 10,562,188 units (including 9,129,573 commercial vehicles).

India’s factories rolled out 6,014,691 vehicles, reflecting steady growth in one of the world ’s fastest‑expanding auto markets. Mexico and South Korea each manufactured just over 4 million vehicles. Combined, these five nations accounted for roughly another third of global production.

The remaining third came from dozens of other countries. Major European producers included Germany (about 4.07 million cars)and Spain (2.38 million vehicles). Brazil produced 2.55 million vehicles, posting a 10 % year‑on‑year increase. Russia rebounded strongly with 982,665 vehicles produced, up 35 % after a sharp decline the previous year.

Smaller but still significant contributions came from Thailand, Turkey, Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy, among others. Overall, world production fell by about 1 % in 2023, reflecting weaker demand in some markets and supply‑chain adjustments.

"It takes away from automakers and their Brazilian workers all the potential they otherwise would have," said Anfavea president, Igor Calvet, who also warned BYD to begin local production without further delays. "The main objective of the tariffs is to stimulate local production, promoting a gradual nationalisation of the country’s own supply chain for electromobility,” said Edgar Barassa, a researcher of electromobility and public policy at the University of Campinas in São Paulo.

The initiative , led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from Japan and support from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, will target schools, hospitals, kindergartens, and public transport.

The project responds to frequent energy crises caused by extreme weather, aiming to make the country’s systems more climate-resilient. Public buildings will be upgraded with insulation, energy-efficient windows, solar panels, and heat pumps, with measures expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve comfort year-round.

In parallel, clean transport pilots will introduce electric vehicles, charging stations, and real-time air quality monitoring.

Japan is contributing advanced technology and financing through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) , which allows for emissions reduction cooperation under the Paris Agreement.

The initiative is part of Uzbekistan’s national goal to cut emissions by 35% and raise clean energy to 25% by 2030.

Beyond emissions, the project promises practical benefits like lower energy bills, improved public health, and more stable indoor climates during extreme heat or cold.

“This project is not just about the environment. It’s about comfort, health, and a sustainable future,” UNDP and the national Agency for Energy Efficiency noted.

Other countries are advancing with decarbonization efforts, with China leading the way, where one of its cities, Shenzhen, became the world’s first city to fully electrify its bus network, deploying 16,000 electric buses by late 2017. This shift cuts fuel use by 345,000 barrels and reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.35 million tonnes annually. The city also built 8,000 charging points and 510 charging stations to support the fleet. Other countries include Chile, Russia, Denmark, Norway and South Africa.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) leads various global decarbonization initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development with key efforts including, Carbon Payments for Development (CP4D) Facility , launched in 2021, to help developing countries access carbon markets and implement emission-reducing projects, Greening Moonshot initiative to reduce carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 through energy-efficient upgrades, saving millions while cutting emissions by over 3,500 tonnes annually.

BYD surpasses Tesla in European EV sales for the first time

Chinese automaker BYD outsold Tesla in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales across 28 European countries last month, marking its first lead over the U.S. firm in the region. According to data released Thursday by research firm JATO Dynamics, BYD sold 7,231 BEVs in April, narrowly surpassing Tesla’s 7,165 units. Despite the slim margin, analysts view the development as significant for Europe’s car market. JATO analyst Felipe Munoz described it as a “watershed moment,” reflecting growing European acceptance of Chinese EVs. BYD’s April sales rose nearly 170% year-over-year, far exceeding the overall EV market growth of 17%. The brand’s price advantage, despite existing EU tariffs, continues to appeal to cost-conscious buyers.

China urges investigation after Israeli troops fire on diplomatic delegation

China has called for a full investigation into an incident in which Israeli soldiers fired on a diplomatic delegation in Jenin, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned actions endangering diplomatic personnel and urged steps to prevent recurrence. Spokesperson Mao Ning emphasised the need for all parties, especially Israel, to avoid actions that could escalate regional tensions.

China says Taiwan is not a country

China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday, May 22, rejected comments by Taiwan’s foreign minister, stating that it is "arrogant and ignorant" to call Taiwan a country. Spokesperson Mao Ning asserted that Taiwan has never been a state and reaffirmed that its future can only be determined by China's 1.4 billion people. China considers Taiwan a province with no right to statehood and has increased military and political pressure to reinforce this stance. The statement followed remarks by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, who said China lacks the authority to decide Taiwan’s status and expressed openness to dialogue with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Bill introduced to curb China’s tariff evasion through offshore production

U.S. representative for Texas and House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington introduced the Axing Nonmarket Tariff Evasion (ANTE) Act on Thursday, which targets Chinese state-backed and subsidised entities that establish production in third countries to bypass U.S. tariffs. Arrington stated the legislation addresses long-standing unfair trade practices that have negatively impacted the U.S. economy and employment. "For far too long, adversaries like China have engaged in unfair trade practices, cheated the American economy, and cost the U.S. millions of jobs," Arrington said in a statement to Fox News .

China-Philippines maritime clash escalates tensions

The Philippines has accused China of dangerously ramming and using a water cannon against its coast guard vessel near Sandy Cay in the South China Sea. Video evidence confirms a Chinese ship’s aggressive actions, which caused significant damage. China’s foreign ministry denied knowledge of the incident, while Philippine officials labelled it a “serious violation”. Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned that the country will not tolerate threats to its sovereignty. The incident has drawn international concern amid growing tensions in the disputed waters.

Potential layoffs due to US tariffs

Following the announcement of a 32% tariff on Indonesian exports by the US, up to 50,000 Indonesian workers may face layoffs, prompting President Prabowo to instruct cabinet members to explore employment measures urgently. According to VN Express , this assessment was shared by Vice Chair of Indonesia’s National Economic Council, Mari Elka Pangestu, highlighting ongoing negotiations and various initiatives to mitigate impacts on the labour-intensive textile and shrimp processing industries.

Concerns over military role in governance

Amid concerns about Indonesia regressing to authoritarianism reminiscent of Suharto's regime, critics are alarmed at President Prabowo's moves to expand the military's role in governance. Human rights advocates emphasise a collective trauma over past abuses as public protests arise against new legislation, as reported by the Economic Times . Despite this, Prabowo maintains that limitations are in place, while fears of media suppression and intimidation grow due to recent incidents involving local journalists.

Withdrawal from $7.7 billion EV battery project

A South Korean consortium led by LG has decided to withdraw its $7.7 billion electric vehicle battery supply chain project in Indonesia, citing changes in the industrial landscape and reduced global EV demand. Despite this exit, LG Energy Solution plans to maintain its existing operations in Indonesia, including a joint venture with Hyundai for battery production, reports Social News XYZ .

Rising cocaine use reported in Indonesia

Tempo reports that the Indonesian National Police reported a rising trend in cocaine use, evidenced by a recent seizure of 25 kilogrammes of cocaine in Aceh and North Sumatra. The increase reflects the activity of an international drug distribution network. Despite cocaine's limited distribution due to high costs, arrests in this case indicate growing concerns regarding drug abuse in the country.

First ministerial ‘2+2’ dialogue between Indonesia and China

Indonesia and China are set to hold their first-ever 2+2 ministerial dialogue on April 21 in Beijing, marking a significant step in bilateral relations. This dialogue, which underscores strategic cooperation, follows previous meetings between President Xi Jinping and President Prabowo. The meeting aims to discuss security, political cooperation, and regional collaboration, further solidifying the nations' 75-year diplomatic relationship, reports Antara .

You could argue about the prices all you want, but for car owners, long-term maintenance costs can be the difference between a budget-friendly ride and a financial headache.

Thanks to data compiled by Consumer Reports' 2024 Annual Auto Survey , we now have a clear picture of which brands are the most economical over time.

From EVs to everyday sedans, here’s how the top car brands stack up when it comes to maintenance and repair costs over 10 years—and the key reasons why.

Tesla: ($5,050 Total)

1 to 5 Years: $730

5 to 10 Years: $4,320

Tesla leads with the lowest overall maintenance costs—a result of its electric drivetrain, which has far fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines. Consumer Reports confirms that Teslas need less routine maintenance (no oil changes, fewer brake issues due to regenerative braking), and remote diagnostics have reduced service visits. However, after 5 years, costs rise due to out-of-warranty battery and electronics repairs, which can be pricey if needed.

Honda: ($6,130 Total)

1 to 5 Years: $1,545

5 to 10 Years: $4,585

Known for their bulletproof reliability, Honda vehicles continue to perform well in long-term cost rankings. Parts are affordable, engines are durable, and they're easy to service globally. High reliability scores in Consumer Reports’ surveys reflect fewer major repairs and consistent satisfaction among owners.

Chevrolet and Ford

Chevrolet: $6,050 | Ford: $5,950

These American brands have made strides in quality and cost-efficiency, especially with newer models. Both have accessible service networks and relatively low parts costs. However, their 5–10 year maintenance jumps are notable, often related to drivetrain or suspension repairs as vehicles age.

Mazda & Toyota

Mazda: $6,020 | Toyota: $5,300

Toyota remains a favourite for low-cost ownership. It combines rock-solid engineering with an industry-leading hybrid program, which helps keep repairs low. Mazda scores points for being highly reliable without a luxury price tag, though its sportier vehicles tend to need more care in the later years.

Hyundai, Nissan, Buick, and Lincoln

Hyundai: $5,680 | Nissan: $5,935

Buick: $5,300 | Lincoln: $5,200

Hyundai and Nissan offer good value early on, but repairs in years 6–10 can stack up, especially with ageing CVTs (continuously variable transmissions). Buick and Lincoln, known for comfort, have lower-than-average service costs thanks to long warranties and accessible parts networks.

Why these rankings matter

According to Consumer Reports, maintenance costs can account for 7–10% of total car ownership expenses over a decade. As inflation continues to affect car prices and repair labor, choosing a brand with low lifetime service costs is more crucial than ever.

Additionally, EVs like Tesla are changing the game, with lower early maintenance offset by steeper post-warranty costs. On the other hand, Japanese automakers continue to win on long-term affordability, with Toyota and Honda consistently leading.

Morocco plans to build electric cars from scratch, boost green transport

According to Industry and Trade Minister, Ryad Mezzour, Morocco wants to be one of the few countries in the world that can fully build electric cars—from mining raw materials to making batteries and assembling vehicles.

Speaking at a green energy event in Casablanca, Mezzour said this is not a distant goal.

He stressed that the process has already started and will move quickly, making Morocco the only country in the Euro-African region with the ability to manufacture electric vehicles from start to finish.

This includes mining key materials like phosphate and cobalt, making battery components, and assembling the final product.

The government expects this plan to help triple Morocco’s exports by 2030.

Alongside car production, Morocco is also investing in cleaner public transport.

The government has started buying electric buses and aims to add 7,000 to the country’s transport system.

The first batch of 1,300 buses has already been ordered, and at least half of the remaining 6,000 will also be electric.

Officials say Morocco is working on producing high-powered electric buses locally, which currently cost between $180,000 and $200,000 each.

With the 2030 FIFA World Cup approaching, Morocco sees this green transition as part of a bigger effort to modernise its transport system and reduce pollution. The minister said these moves align with Morocco’s goal of achieving zero carbon emissions in the future.

Over the last few years, the world has shifted towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future, thus, copper is emerging as a critical component in the transition.

This reddish-orange metal, often overlooked in favour of more captivating resources like gold or lithium, is ready to play a vital role in powering the modern world.

According to an IMF projection, 39.1 million tonnes of copper will be demanded by 2040 against 25.9 million tonnes in 2023.

Oil on the other is expected to see a sharp decline by 2040 with 66 million barrels per day against the 101.9 million barrels produced every day in 2023.

Why Copper?

Copper is a crucial component in electrical wiring, circuits, and motors. As the world transitions to electric vehicles and renewable energy sources, copper demand is expected to surge.

Copper is extensively used in solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable energy technologies. As these technologies become increasingly prevalent, copper will play a vital role in their development and deployment.

This is the first time the country has produced its own car, marking a major step forward in technology and industry.

The electric car can travel up to 330 kilometres on a single charge, and it takes only 30 minutes to recharge. This makes it suitable for travelling both in cities and rural areas.

The move aims at reducing the country’s reliance on imported vehicles.

The car is expected to create many jobs in areas such as manufacturing, sales, and maintenance. It will also promote the use of renewable energy, helping Burkina Faso reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

By building cars locally, Burkina Faso can save money, lower its carbon emissions, and possibly create a product for export in the future.

Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz and President of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), has emphasised the importance of the European Union (EU) taking proactive measures to avoid a potential trade conflict with the United States.

The automotive sector, a significant contributor to the EU's economy, is currently navigating a complex landscape marked by global competition and the transition to electric and hydrogen zero-emission vehicles.

Källenius highlighted that the industry faces unprecedented challenges, including the need to comply with stringent CO2 targets and the potential imposition of new tariffs by the US.

He further urged EU leaders to seek a "grand bargain" with the US to prevent a trade war that could have detrimental effects on both economies. He pointed out that European automakers export tens of billions of dollars worth of cars to the US annually, and the threat of high tariffs could disrupt this vital trade relationship.

Inflation Stabilises at 5.20%

Colombia's inflation rate closed in 2024 at 5.20%, marking a significant drop from 2023’s 9.28%. According to Colombia’s National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), inflation has been on a steady decline since peaking at 13.34% in November 2022, Colombia One reports. However, the disinflation process has slowed due to the rising costs of electricity, food, and goods. The lowest inflation rate since November 2021 still far exceeds the 1.16% recorded in December 2020. Sectors like education, restaurants, and utilities continue to see the highest inflation, while entertainment and communication costs have declined.

Colombia rejects Maduro’s election results

Colombia's government has reiterated its stance against recognising the results of Venezuela’s contested July 2024 elections. This came ahead of President Nicolás Maduro's third-term inauguration. Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo emphasised that the elections lacked transparency and failed to meet democratic standards. “Colombia has adopted a consistent and prudent stance. The past electoral process did not provide guarantees to the participants, nor was it carried out in a transparent manner in accordance with the provisions of the laws and the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," El Colombiano quoted Murillo. Despite sending an ambassador to Venezuela, President Gustavo Petro declined to attend the swearing-in ceremony, aligning with international criticism of the electoral process.

Plane crash in Antioquia

All 10 passengers aboard a Cessna 402 aircraft that crashed in Urrao, Antioquia, have been confirmed dead. Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián expressed deep sorrow and pledged continued efforts to recover the victims. Relief agencies and the Colombian Air Force are working on-site to transfer the bodies.

5.3 Earthquake Hits Pacific Coast

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia's Pacific coast near Chocó on January 10. The tremor, recorded at a depth of under 30 km, was felt in cities such as Medellín, Quibdó, and Bahía Solano.

Start-ups like Windrose are taking advantage of China's strong supply chain to produce affordable electric trucks.

However, challenges like shorter battery ranges and concerns about quality are still posing a challenge, especially in markets like Europe and the United States.

Windrose, a Chinese electric truck start-up, says its trucks can run up to 670 kilometres on a single charge. Founder Wen Han believes there is a growing demand for cleaner trucks worldwide that could improve cost savings and environmental goals.

Companies like BYD and other Chinese firms have already sent trucks to countries such as Italy, Mexico, and Poland, while also opening assembly plants abroad.

But rising tariffs from countries like the United States and the European Union could slow down China’s plans to dominate global EV truck markets. These tariffs aim to protect local businesses from cheaper Chinese vehicles.

Businesses in Vietnam face over 8,000 cyberattacks daily

Vietnamese businesses encountered significant vulnerabilities in cyberspace, with over 1.44 million cyberattacks reported in the first half of 2024, translating to more than 8,000 incidents daily, as per findings from Kaspersky. Within Southeast Asia, a staggering 26 million web threats were detected and thwarted during this timeframe, with Malaysia being particularly hard hit, registering over 19.6 million individual attacks. The escalating digital transformation in the region has been identified as a catalyst for increasing cyber risks, posing potential disruptions to critical sectors such as supply chains and healthcare, Tuoi Tre News reports .

PM says incentive mechanisms needed for semiconductor industry

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính underscored the urgency for robust incentive mechanisms and strategic policies to bolster Vietnam's semiconductor industry during the inaugural meeting of the National Steering Committee for Semiconductor Industry Development on December 14, 2024. He celebrated the strategic significance of the semiconductor sector and called for holistic engagement from government entities, commercial enterprises, and international partners. According to Vietnam News , proposed initiatives entail the establishment of an investment support fund, revisions to tax and fee policies, as well as a comprehensive human resources development plan aimed for implementation by 2030. Specific responsibilities were designated to various ministries; the Ministry of Planning and Investment is charged with overseeing the investment fund and human resource strategies, while the Ministry of Information and Communications will focus on the progression of specialised chips.

Việt Nam needs $14 billion to develop EV charging stations

On the forefront of sustainable development, Vietnam is poised to secure approximately $14 billion in investments to establish a comprehensive network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, integral to its aspirations for a green transport system and achieving net-zero emissions. Vietnam News reports that this strategic investment is paramount for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, stimulating economic growth, and generating employment opportunities amidst the burgeoning demand for EVs. Projections from the World Bank reveal that $2.2 billion will be requisite by 2030, escalating to $13.9 billion by 2040, and $32.6 billion by 2050 to adequately address the EV demand trajectory. Leading manufacturers, such as VinFast, are spearheading this initiative by investing in and adopting a franchise model aimed at broadening the charging network's reach.

Vietnam becomes top banana supplier to China

In the agricultural sector, Vietnam has emerged as China's leading supplier of bananas, marked by a remarkable 19.6% increase in imports from Vietnam, juxtaposed with a 39.2% decline in imports from the Philippines. This shift has been largely attributed to adverse weather conditions and diseases impacting banana production in the Philippines, leading to price hikes. Major Chinese retailers, including Aeon supermarkets, have made a strategic decision to stock exclusively Vietnamese bananas, which are recognised for their consistent quality and competitive pricing. Nonetheless, Vietnamese exporters as reported by vnExpress grapple with various challenges, such as price volatility during harvest periods and stringent Chinese quarantine regulations that must be adhered to.

Vietnam's e-commerce revenue to surpass a record US$25bil in 2025

Lastly, the e-commerce landscape in Vietnam is on a trajectory of rapid growth, with projections indicating that revenue could surpass US$25 billion by 2025. The B2C market is anticipated to experience growth rates of 18-20% in early 2024. The electronic portal established for foreign suppliers has recorded 116 registrations, contributing significantly to Vietnam's revenue, amounting to 19.8 trillion VND (approximately US$779.4 million). Notably, direct revenues generated through this portal reached 8.7 trillion VND (about US$342.4 million), showcasing a substantial increase of 26% from the previous year, The Star reports.

Starting January 1, 2025, import duties on EVs will drop from 40% to 25%. The move aims to encourage the adoption of green mobility solutions in the country.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced the proposal during his presentation of the 2025 national budget in Parliament on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

"Cognisant of the need to promote the use of eco-friendly vehicles, which will result in reduced carbon emissions, I propose to reduce customs duty on electric motor vehicles, with effect from 1 January 2025," Ncube said.

Ncube also proposed duty rebates on equipment used to establish solar-powered EV charging stations. These rebates will apply to equipment imported by approved operators, signalling the government’s commitment to supporting sustainable energy solutions.

The minister underscored the importance of addressing climate change through innovative approaches. "We must leverage our natural resources to combat climate-related challenges effectively," he emphasised.

Zimbabwe’s push for EV adoption aligns with its ambitious goal of achieving 33% market penetration for electric vehicles by 2030. As the largest lithium producer in Africa and ranking fifth globally, Zimbabwe holds significant potential in the production of lithium-ion batteries—the core technology powering EVs.

The country’s vast lithium reserves could position Zimbabwe as a leader in Africa’s green energy transition, bolstering its economy and aligning with the government’s National Development Strategy (NDS1) to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030.

Minister announces 15% reduction in import duty on electric vehicles

Zimbabwe's Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced a 15% reduction in import duty on electric vehicles (EVs), lowering it from 40% to 25%, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative is geared towards enhancing market penetration of EVs, with a goal of achieving 33% by 2030, while also facilitating the establishment of solar-powered EV charging stations through extended duty rebates for necessary equipment. Importantly, this effort aligns with Zimbabwe's commitment to combat climate change, leveraging its lithium resources for battery manufacturing.

Power cut during parliamentary budget speech

A sudden power cut occurred during a recent parliamentary budget speech while Finance Minister Ncube was concluding his speech. Opposition MPS swiftly leveraged this incident, characterising it as a stark representation of the ongoing challenges faced by the nation, highlighting the unreliable energy infrastructure Zimbabwe is grappling with.

Zimbabweans are among the top immigrants in the UK

The migration of Zimbabweans to the United Kingdom has shown a notable increase over the past year, reaching 36,000, which places Zimbabwe among the top five non-EU nations contributing to long-term immigration. This surge , up from 32,000 in 2023, is primarily driven by the demand for skilled professionals in the UK, particularly in healthcare. The migration of Zimbabwean healthcare professionals, such as nurses and doctors, indicates a trend towards seeking better career opportunities and living conditions abroad, raising concerns regarding a brain drain that exacerbates the challenges faced by Zimbabwe’s own healthcare system.

China-Zimbabwe trade exceeds $3 billion in 2024

Trade relations between China and Zimbabwe exceeded $3 billion in 2024, highlighting the strong economic relations between the two nations. The Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, revealed a $10 million humanitarian food aid package designed to support Zimbabweans affected by drought. The event, attended by key Zimbabwean officials, reiterated historical cooperation and explored avenues for further collaboration in trade and human resource development, illustrating the potential benefits of continued bilateral relations.

Zimbabweans abroad remitted $1.9 billion by September 2024

Zimbabweans living abroad sent $1.9 billion in remittances during the first nine months of 2024. This figure, representing approximately 16% of Zimbabwe’s foreign currency inflows and exhibiting a 16.5% increase from the previous year, reflects ongoing financial support for the home economy. International reserves saw a substantial rise from $285 million in April to $540 million by October 2024, attributed to increased currency and gold holdings. Despite stable inflation post the introduction of Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), challenges persist, notably from parallel market activities, prompting the Monetary Policy Committee to respond with adjustments to the bank policy rate and currency withdrawal limits, evidencing Zimbabwe's ongoing efforts to stabilise its economy in the face of global economic pressures.

Uzbekistan and China intend to liberalise visa regime

Uzbekistan and China are reinforcing their diplomatic and economic relations through various initiatives, including the liberalisation of visa regimes and enhanced consular cooperation. On November 24, 2024, high-level discussions in Beijing aimed to simplify these visa processes while ensuring the rights of citizens are upheld. A multifaceted approach was adopted, addressing critical areas such as tourism, entrepreneurship, and investment opportunities. Uzbekistan's government is undertaking substantial reforms to facilitate travel, which has garnered recognition and support from Chinese officials, Daryo reports.

Car production boost

Uzbekistan's automotive sector is experiencing impressive growth, with vehicle production reaching 338,000 units and export revenues hitting $455 million from January to October 2024. The country has set ambitious targets to escalate production to 450,000 vehicles and boost export income to $700 million by 2025. Collaborations with international brands, notably Chevrolet, as well as manufacturers from South Korea and China, are pivotal to this sector's growth. According to The Times of Central Asia, a significant development is the new BYD electric vehicle plant located in Jizzakh, which is currently producing 50,000 electric vehicles annually, with aspirations to extend its capacity up to 500,000 vehicles per year.

Population growth

As of November 27, 2024, Uzbekistan's population has surpassed 37.5 million, now recorded at 37,504,338. This demographic growth will undoubtedly influence the country's economic planning and development initiatives, as a larger population can lead to increased demand for goods and services, reports Akipress .

Raising GDP to $200bn

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has set forth a strategic goal to elevate Uzbekistan's GDP to $200 billion by the year 2030. Ongoing reforms in the railway and aviation sectors reflect this ambition, with significant enhancements aimed at improving economic efficiency and transportation services. As reported by Daryo , the establishment of six independent enterprises within the railway sector and the introduction of new cargo wagons have dramatically reduced domestic transport times. Furthermore, digitalisation initiatives have streamlined cargo ordering processes, resulting in significant reductions in processing times.

UnionPay cards of Gazprombank stopped

UnionPay cards issued by Gazprombank have been suspended in Uzbekistan due to recent U.S. Treasury sanctions on the bank and other Russian financial institutions. These sanctions have disrupted UnionPay card services, impacting users' access to cash and payments. According to Daryo , this marks the first time Gazprombank's core activities have been directly affected by sanctions, previously targeting only high-ranking officials. The sanctions aim to limit Russia's financial activities, particularly in energy exports, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

As they aim to expand into the European market, these companies face increased tariffs imposed by the European Union on Chinese EV imports.

Xpeng’s founder and CEO, He Xiaopeng, is optimistic about the opportunities in Europe. He told AFP on the sidelines of the Paris Motor Show that European businesses "don't need to worry" about Chinese competitors.

“I think all policies are reasonable as long as they are stable and they treat all companies equal. Now we are searching for possibilities to work with local plants or have our own plants (in Europe)," he elaborated.

He Xiaopeng also emphasised the potential for collaboration with local European partners, stating, “We would like to work with other local partners in order to use our own complementary advantages or comparative advantage."

Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo, highlighted the importance of learning from the competition. Speaking at the show, he said, “How we engage with China will also be crucial. There's an opportunity that we have no right to miss: learning from our competitors and imitating them when they do better than us. This is what the Europeans - the Fiats, the Citroens, the Renaults - did a century ago in the United States when Ford revolutionised manufacturing with the production line. That's what the Chinese have also done more recently with us."

Xpeng’s long-term ambitions extend beyond traditional EVs. The company is exploring the possibility of introducing flying cars to Europe, contingent on regulatory approval. "If the law in Europe allows, we want to launch flying cars," He Xiaopeng revealed.

Meanwhile, Tesla, a key competitor in the EV space and owned by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has unveiled its self-driving vehicle, the "Cybercab." Set for production by 2027, the Cybercab is expected to revolutionise urban transportation with a starting price under $30,000 and an operating cost of just $0.40 per mile.

However, Tesla shares dropped by 9% on Friday, October 11, after the new vehicle's reveal failed to meet investor expectations.

This forms part of efforts to reduce emissions and tackle climate change in the country.

The move is also expected to rival imported EVs from countries including India and China.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum has already secured prototypes for this compact electric vehicle.

Sheinbaum who is also a former energy researcher hopes to develop Mexico’s supply chains and reduce reliance on imports through this.

“We are going to generate supply chains so that everything that is in the electric car is manufactured in the country and we import as little as possible,” Sheinbaum was quoted as having said during a press briefing.

The vehicles will resemble small alternatives to motorcycles and Indian mini cars produced in China and India and will be facilitated by Mexican manufacturers of motors and researchers.

“There are companies in Mexico that have been making electric motors for a long time, so the idea is to bring them together with Mexican researchers so that they can assemble this electric vehicle,” she said .

The president further noted that the local production of these vehicles will develop the country’s copper and lithium industries and make roadways safer.

This comes as countries around the world make efforts to move towards the use of electric vehicles to promote sustainable energy and reduce the effects of climate change through carbon reduction.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 21, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning condemned the EU’s decision as protectionist and politically motivated.

“Regarding EU tariffs, I want to stress that this investigation is a typical protectionist and politically-driven act. It ignores objective facts, disregards WTO rules, goes against the historical trend, and damages the EU's green transformation process and global efforts to address climate change. With this decision, the EU will only harm itself,” Mao Ning said.

She further urged the EU to reconsider its stance. “We urge the EU to correct immediately its erroneous practices, stop politicising, instrumentalizing, and weaponizing economic and trade issues, show sincerity and work towards the same direction as China, accelerate the exploration of appropriate solutions, avoid the escalation of trade frictions, and avoid affecting mutual trust and cooperation between China and the EU. China will take all necessary measures to defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies resolutely," she added.

In response to the EU’s import decision, Beijing launched its own investigation into European subsidies for certain dairy products imported into China.

The probe targets key aspects of the EU’s framework, including the common agricultural policy and national subsidy programs in countries like Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Croatia, Finland, Romania, and the Czech Republic, as AFP reports.

The European brandy and pork exports were previously under investigation by the Chinese Commerce Ministry during different phases of the EU's inquiry into Chinese subsidies for electric vehicles. These reciprocal investigations have caused worries about increasing trade tensions between the EU and China.

The plant, launched on July 3, is a joint venture between South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution (LGES), is situated in the West Javan town of Karawang and boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 10 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery cells, which is expected to power about 50, 000 of Hyundai’s Kona Electric SUVs every year.

President Joko Widodo, speaking at the facility's inauguration, declared the EV plant a milestone in Indonesia's economic evolution. He further highlighted that Indonesia's transition from a raw material exporter to a value-added manufacturer is a move that will solidify its position in the global EV supply chain.

"We have abundant natural resources, but for decades we only exported it in the form of raw materials without added value. But now with smelters and the electric vehicle battery cell being built, we will become an important global player in the global supply chain for electric vehicles," he said.

The establishment of this plant is part of a larger $9.8 billion EV battery deal signed between Indonesia and LG in 2020. With plans to expand the plant's capacity to 20 GWh through an additional investment of $2 billion, the future of Indonesia's EV industry looks promising.

Hyundai Motor Group's executive chairman, Euisun Chung also expressed optimism about the country's rich mineral resources, such as iron and nickel to be crucial components for the batteries that will drive millions of EVs in Indonesia.

"The mineral resources in this country, such as iron and nickel, are important components of the battery that will mobilise millions of electric vehicles in Indonesia," Euisun Chung said.

Indonesia in 2020 banned the exportation of raw nickel with the intent of encouraging investments into domestic processing. Now, with the launch of the EV battery plant, the country is poised to become a formidable force in the EV arena.

Climate crisis is pushing the world to seek cleaner air and more sustainable modes of transportation and EVs have proven to be a more climate-friendly alternative compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars.

Earth Justice highlights that "Over its lifetime, the average new electric vehicle produces about half the greenhouse gas emissions of an equivalent vehicle burning gasoline or diesel."

Gajibo, a young Nigerian innovator, is addressing urban mass transit challenges in Nigeria in an environmentally friendly way.

The Nigerian has been building electric cars in his home country since 2017 after dropping out of his engineering studies at the University of Maiduguri.

In 2023, Gajibo partnered with the Borno State government to deploy electric taxis in the city that would tackle the high cost of transportation, create jobs and reduce carbon emissions.

“In partnership with Borno State government, we are set to deploy 50 electric taxis in Maiduguri metropolis to create jobs, reduce cost of transportation and carbon emissions, Maiduguri is set to become the city with lowest carbon emissions in Africa,” he announced on social media.

He built from scratch a fully electric 12-seater bus using some locally sourced materials. The bus is fully airconditioned, has a voice command system, and can be charged using a solar-powered system that is built into the back.

The Nigerian stated that switching to electric versions of frequently used city cars with internal combustion engines was the first step in his journey. He concentrated on two vehicle types that locals frequently pay to ride, which are motorised tricycles known as kekes and 7-seater minibuses.

He introduced a 7-seater minibus which can be charged using solar panels and electricity for intra-city travel in 2023.

AI-generated porn clips

Royal Thai police have found evidence of criminals utilising images of singers, actors, and ordinary people to fabricate fake pornographic videos using artificial intelligence. A spokesman claimed that after that, the perpetrators sold or distributed the videos, seriously harming the reputations of the people whose pictures were featured. People involved in AI-generated fake porno clips can face up to at least six counts of offences that can lead to a jail term and a fine, the Nation Thailand reported.

Surrogacy for gay couples

The head of Thailand's health department, Atchara Nithiapinyasakul is pushing for changes to the Surrogacy Act that would permit gay couples to adopt a child through a surrogate mother. This action according to Atchara is a part of her suggestions to address Thailand's declining birth rate, as the country now has more deaths than births every year. Thailand is facing a labour shortage among its people as well as fierce competition from other nations for migrant workers. The law as it stands now prohibits commercial surrogacy and restricts heterosexual couples who have been married for at least 3 years to using a female relative who, out of pure charity, is prepared to carry and birth the child, local media Pattaya Mail reports.

Growth of electronic vehicles

In 2023, Thailand saw a 700% increase in electric vehicle (EV) registrations, with over 76,366 vehicles registered, according to local media the Post Today . This trend is set to continue in 2024 as the private sector adjusts to the Thai government's initiatives to support EV 3.5, a four-year policy between 2024 and 2027 that aims to support the ongoing expansion of the EV industry and create investment opportunities in Thailand's EV manufacturing. Chinese car manufacturers Great Wall Motor, SAIC Motor, and Chang'an have all signed contracts to be eligible for EV 3.5 initiatives. The managing director of Great Wall Motor, Thailand, Narong Sitalayon intends to make investments to build factories and develop into a hub for regional production. The company intends to provide a range of electric car alternatives, such as battery-powered vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, the Post reported.

Factory act amendment

Thailand's Ministry of Industry wants to change the regulations relating to the establishment of fireworks factories in the wake of a fatal explosion that occurred in Suphan Buri, a region in west-central Thailand, the Bangkok Post reported. Somsak Thepsutin, the deputy prime minister of Thailand, has directed the government to update industrial legislation to handle small factories that endanger the communities around them. A committee will be established to revise Thailand's 1992 Factory Act and other safety and environmental standards. The group will also research laws and rules aimed at preventing mishaps that endanger citizens, manufacturing workers, and the environment, the Bangkok Post reports.

International standard hospitals

Thailand’s Office of the Board of Investment (BOI) has reported that the Asian nation has the potential to develop into a global centre for healthcare, with 60 facilities that satisfy the standards of the Joint Commission International (JCI), a nonprofit organisation that establishes the benchmark for patient safety and healthcare quality worldwide. Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the BOI Office said that direct investments in Thailand's manufacturing of medical tools and supplements have come from investors in China, Japan, the US, and Europe. Proposals totalling 16 billion baht ($448 million) for 65 medical and health industry projects were received by the BOI last year, the Nation reported.

Government advised on Electric Vehicles

Energy expert Boniface Zulu has advised the Zambian government to invest in charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a broader initiative to transition to a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system. Such an investment could reduce transport costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and oil imports, the Lusaka Times reports. “The benefits of electric vehicles in Zambia include environmental, economic, and social aspects. The adoption of electric vehicles can lead to a lower carbon footprint, reduced emissions of local pollutants, lower fuel and maintenance costs, reduced dependence on oil imports, increased energy efficiency, and potential for job creation and innovation . The adoption of electric vehicles presents a promising option for Zambia to address its transport and energy challenges , ” Zulu said.
