Top Latin American celebrities deep in philanthropy

1. Shakira

Shakira is one of the most recognisable singers in the world, and she’s also spent years investing in education and children’s rights. She founded the Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), which builds and supports schools for underprivileged children in Colombia, providing meals, parent training, and wider community help. She also co-founded ALAS, a regional initiative focused on improving early childhood policies across Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, she serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador , working on global education and social justice efforts.

2. Marc Anthony

Marc Anthony has combined global musical success with sustained humanitarian work, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. He co-founded the Maestro Cares Foundation in 2012, which supports disadvantaged children and communities across Latin America and the United States. The foundation funds and builds orphanages, schools and community homes in countries including the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia. Its focus is on creating safe housing, access to education and long-term stability for vulnerable children. Anthony has also been active in disaster relief, particularly following hurricanes in Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean. He has organised and participated in benefit concerts and fundraising efforts to support rebuilding and humanitarian aid.

Davido's custody battle

The legal team of Sophia Momodu, the estranged lover of Nigeria's top musician, Davido, has publicly warned the singer and his fans against intimidating or harassing the lawyer handling her child's custody case. The firm, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors, criticised inciting posts on social media directed at their partner, Ebelechukwu Enedah, saying the matter is before the court and should be decided there, not online. They said threats or intimidation of legal practitioners undermine justice and should not be tolerated. The warning comes after Davido’s social-media posts expressing frustration with the lawyer’s conduct during a recent hearing, including comments he described as insensitive regarding his late son, which drew strong reactions from his followers. He later clarified that he was seeking joint custody of their daughter, Imade, and not full custody. He wrote in a social media post, "Like I said in the courtroom, I pray you never go through what me and my wife have gone through ever, and you were still smiling, smirking. You are a wicked human being. You are the worst lawyer ever. I beat you in court. You are not learned.”

In the 300-seat National Assembly, a growing number of politicians are using the video-sharing platform to bypass traditional media and cultivate large online followings. For many, subscriber counts have become a new measure of political clout.

As of early February, at least 25 lawmakers had surpassed 100,000 subscribers, the threshold required to receive YouTube’s “silver play button.” It has become an unlikely status symbol in politics , in the country and a way to appeal to the grassroots.

Most of the lawmakers with silver play buttons are from liberal or left-leaning parties, though several conservatives have also built sizable audiences. Subscriber numbers appear to depend less on seniority and more on timing, messaging style and online engagement.

YouTube allows politicians to communicate unfiltered, respond quickly to controversies and mobilise younger voters who consume news primarily online. Lawmakers can livestream debates, post commentary and shape narratives without relying on mainstream broadcasters.

However, politicians have been cautioned that online popularity does not always reflect public support or voting .

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticised the Grammys as “virtually unwatchable” and attacked Noah’s performance as host.

Trump accused the South African comedian of making a false statement that he and former President Bill Clinton had spent time on “Epstein Island.” “WRONG!!! I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close,” Trump wrote, denying ever being associated with the location.

Trump said he had never previously been accused of visiting the island, “not even by the Fake News Media ,” and described Noah’s comment as “false and defamatory.”

He went on to threaten to send lawyers after the comedian, calling him “talentless” and warning that he would sue for significant damages.

“It looks like I'll be sending my lawyers to sue,” Trump wrote. “Get ready, Noah, I'm going to have some fun with you!”

The initiative, unveiled at the 1 Billion Followers Summit in Dubai, drew more than 177,000 submissions from creators worldwide, with only ten selected to take part in the mission. These creators, alongside a group of well-known global influencers, will travel to Ghana to help develop a community aimed at meeting long-term needs such as education, clean water and basic infrastructure.

MrBeast, whose content reaches more than one billion followers across platforms, said the project is designed to turn online influence into tangible impact. Rather than focusing on follower numbers alone, participants were chosen for their commitment to social good and community-driven ideas.

The country has become increasingly visible on the global stage, attracting international attention for projects that combine philanthropy, storytelling and youth engagement. Local creators, including Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya, have been invited to participate.

The village project will be fully documented and shared across MrBeast’s platforms.

118 new animal species introduced to Giza Zoo

Egypt’s Giza Zoo and Orman Botanical Garden are undergoing their most ambitious transformation in decades, with 118 new animal species being introduced as part of a sweeping biodiversity expansion plan. Mohammed Kamel, Chairman of Hadayek Company, said the newly integrated zoo-garden ecosystem, spanning 114 acres, will feature four lions, three tigers, and 362 newly imported animals, all housed in redesigned open habitats aligned with international standards. Kamel emphasized that the project preserves the zoo’s historic character while elevating it to a regional and global recreational and educational landmark, noting that an African Union delegation has confirmed the development plan’s compliance with international best practices.

180 appeals over parliamentary election results

Egypt’s Supreme Administrative Court has now received 180 appeals contesting the results of the first round of the second phase of parliamentary elections. Appeals have been filed across ten governorates, including Cairo, Dakahlia, Sharqia, Gharbia, North Sinai, and Menoufia. The court’s First Circuit will begin examining each appeal ahead of its December 7 hearing, with the law requiring decisions to be issued within 10 days of filing. The National Elections Authority will continue accepting appeals until December 4, extending work hours until 9 p.m. to meet constitutional deadlines. Losing candidates have 48 hours after results are announced to file objections.

Film controversy

A major cultural and religious backlash erupted after screenwriter Ahmed Mourad said during a Marrakech Film Festival seminar that making a film about the Prophet would be “easier” than making one about legendary singer Umm Kulthum. Prominent preacher Mazhar Shaheen blasted the comment as “recklessness and a lack of modesty towards the master of all creation,” insisting that the Prophet’s status should never be subject to comparison. Mourad’s script for the upcoming film “Al-Sit (The Lady)”, starring Mona Zaki as Umm Kulthum and directed by Marwan Hamed, has drawn intense attention . Mona Zaki reportedly arrives five hours early every shooting day to undergo extensive makeup transformations with a foreign crew.

Cairo governor wins Arab Government Excellence Award

Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber has been named Best Governor in the Arab World at the Arab Government Excellence Award (2024 - 2025), the region’s highest recognition for administrative and governmental innovation. The award , presented under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, honours exemplary governance practices across the Arab world. Saber received the honour from Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, during a ceremony attended by ministers, ambassadors, and governors. The program aims to modernise government institutions, promote innovation, and highlight successful public-sector models capable of driving future-ready governance.

Agriculture Ministry launches nationwide poultry biosecurity campaign

Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture has launched a national awareness campaign targeting poultry farmers to strengthen biosecurity measures, especially during the winter season when respiratory and viral diseases are more prevalent. Over the past two weeks, veterinary teams conducted 610 field visits to farms and held 451 home-breeding seminars across governorates. Dr. Hamed Al-Aqnas, head of the General Authority for Veterinary Services, said the campaign trains breeders on proper disinfection procedures, controlling worker movement inside farms, preventing wild-bird entry, safe disposal of dead birds and waste and early identification of diseases requiring immediate reporting. He confirmed that the epidemiological situation is stable, with rapid-response teams on standby. The ministry plans to intensify outreach throughout high-density poultry regions during the winter.

Is AI making better music? Why artists say they are losing the streaming war

The reason is that AI-generated songs go viral, rack up millions of streams and even sometimes impersonate real musicians, without any form of accountability.

In Canada

In Canada, a mysterious new band named the Velvet Sundown emerged on streaming platforms earlier this year. Within a short period, the band gathered more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify. With vibrant rock tracks, retro album covers and seemingly authentic band photos, many listeners believed they had discovered a real up-and-coming group.

However, a few weeks later, it was reported that the entire project, including the music, vocals, visuals, and photos, was AI-generated. The group’s spokesperson was reported by CBC to have said that the project was an “artistic provocation” designed to test whether AI-created content could pass undetected in the streaming ecosystem.

On the back of this, musicians and unions say that such projects risk diverting already limited streaming royalties away from human artists.

The Director of Canadian Affairs for the American Federation of Musicians said, “It’s obviously a challenge in the industry. Technology gets created and used before there are guardrails in place to protect musicians.”

The union argues that musicians should have to consent before their work is used to train AI systems and should be compensated if they choose to allow it.

In the United States

Further on, the Artist Rights Alliance, a US-based non-profit advocacy group, issued an open letter demanding that AI companies, developers and music platforms stop using artificial intelligence to “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”

“This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem,” the letter read in part.

The statement was signed by more than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj and Arkells.

In Africa

Meanwhile, in Africa, some musicians are choosing to engage with AI instead of rejecting it outright. Nigerian Afropop singer FAVE decided to officially release an AI-generated version of Intentions, a song which, according to the singer, was originally made by Urban Chords, which had gone viral earlier this year after convincingly imitating her voice.

“ People kept tagging me and saying the song felt like something I would sing,” she said.

“I saw how excited people were, and I didn’t want that excitement to die. If fans already believed in the song, why not make it real?”

Fave re-recorded the track herself, intentionally keeping the AI-created choir vocals. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “My song ‘INTENTIONS’ is on the very short list of songs that I wrote about myself, becoming an adult and realising that you can never be in control all the time. I struggled with accepting the things I could not change, and in the face of change, I staggered too. So when my Mum and my friends told me about an AI version of my song being on the net and my fans began asking me to release it, I struggled sooo hard to accept that. But that’s the old me. It’s happening, so why fight it?”

Why the mental health stats of Indonesia's capital don’t match its global happiness ranking

According to the Ministry of Health , 1.5% of Jakarta residents aged 15 and above experience depression, slightly higher than the national average of 1.4%. Other mental-health disorders also rank as the second most common health condition in Indonesia, with 2.2% of Jakarta’s population affected, again above the national average of 2%.

These figures appear to contrast with Jakarta’s placement in a Time Out survey, in which the London-based lifestyle publication interviewed more than 18,000 residents world wide for its report, “The Happiest Cities in the World 2025.” Jakarta ranked 18th globally and was celebrated for its food scene, culture, and social vibrancy.

But Jakarta’s Deputy Governor Rano Karno insists the numbers don’t tell a contradictory story.

“Jakarta is a happy city,” he said at City Hall. “There’s no such thing as a ‘depressed city.’ Depression occurs in certain regions or groups, not the entire population. We have to survey it.”

How can a ‘happy city’ still have rising depression?

The country’s public-health specialists say global “happiness indexes” often measure lifestyle satisfaction, such as access to entertainment, restaurants, culture, community spirit, and public transportation , not mental-health outcomes. Therefore, a city may offer a lively environment that residents enjoy while still grappling with pressures that worsen mental health, such as long working hours, heavy traffic and long commutes, high living costs, limited access to mental-health services and urban isolation.

The Ministry of Health added that urban centres tend to show higher mental-health burdens precisely because of these stress factors.

The data shows that mental-health challenges vary across Indonesia. West Java recorded the highest rate, with 4.4% of residents experiencing mental-health issues, more than double the national average.

In the build-up to the grand finale, a series of incidents raised questions about contestant treatment and the competition’s transparency.

The event this year initially drew attention after footage emerged of Thai pageant organiser Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly reprimanding Miss Mexico during a pre-pageant engagement in Thailand . In the video, he accuses her of failing to participate in a promotional shoot, reportedly calling her a “dumbhead.”

The confrontation prompted several contestants, including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig, to walk out in protest .

The Miss Universe Organisation later distanced itself from the episode, calling the treatment of delegates “unacceptable.” The organisation said Itsaragrisil’s role in this year’s competition had been curtailed. Itsaragrisil later apologised and mended his relations with Miss Mexico on stage.

Following this, another controversy surfaced when two judges at this year’s event, Omar Harfouch and Claude Makélélé, and the president of the selection committee, Princess Camilla di Borbone delle Due Sicilie, resigned days before the finale.

While the series of resignations had begun drawing criticisms, the Miss Universe Organisation moved to douse to controversy with a statement, part of which read, “The Miss Universe Organisation reiterates that all judging procedures for the 74th Miss Universe competition remain official, transparent, and fully governed by MUO protocols. The Beyond the Crown Program operates independently and is not part of the competition’s evaluation process. We encourage all audiences to refer exclusively to verified MUO communications and to continue supporting the delegates who embody the values of Miss Universe.”

Fátima Bosch ultimately secured the Miss Universe 2025 crown on November 20, 2025, Mexico’s fourth win, but the unfolding row has overshadowed the pageant’s reputation. While supporters acclaimed her victory as a triumph over the initial setback, others said the surrounding controversies had undermined confidence in the event.

A few hours after the grand finale, Harfouch has, in a series of Instagram posts and interviews, alleged amongst others that the list of finalists and winner had been predetermined and there was

“I Omar Harfouch declared yesterday exclusively on the American HBO, 24 hours before the Miss Universe final, that Miss Mexico would win - because Miss Universe owner Raúl Rocha is in business with Fatima Bosch’s father. All details will be showed in May 2026 on HBO. Raul Rocha and his son urged me, week ago in Dubai, to vote for #Fatima Bosh because they need her to win “because it will be good for our business,” they said to me,” he said in an Instagram post.

Aside Harfouch, former title holder, Natalie Glebova who served as a judge this year took to her Instagram to name Miss Thailand as her winner and stated that she will not be participating as a judge in the competition again until organisers adopt more transparent methods.

She wrote, “As a judge this year I can only speak for myself when I cast my votes. Please remember that each person has their own opinion and not one single person can influence the result. However, this must be said…when I competed in 2005 and years prior, I recall there was always an auditor that came on stage with sealed results from accounting firm. I’d like to bring that back, please. Until then I don’t think I will be participating as a judge again.”

Social media reactions

The result also triggered a wave of criticism online, with many users arguing that Miss Côte d’Ivoire, Olivia Yacé, had been unfairly overlooked.

One user wrote that the outcome showed “as a Black woman you have to work a hundred times harder than others, and even that is not enough,” adding that “Olivia, you are the people ’s Miss Universe 2025.” Another post praising Yacé read, “Look at her! That’s the true Miss Universe 2025!”

Others pointed to Yacé’s performance in the final question round, calling it the “winning answer” and arguing she should have secured the crown.

Several users framed the result as part of a wider pattern of bias in global beauty competitions. “This is another case of a Black woman being robbed so their token light-skinned woman can be platformed,” one commenter wrote, insisting “the real Miss Universe is Olivia Yacé.”

Here are a few reactions on X;

In a 24-hour effort, which was stalled by a severe storm and power outages, the 29-year-old star of Big Brother Naija and MTV’s The Challenge successfully completed 82 makeovers in eight hours, setting the record for the most cosmetic makeovers in 8 hours (individual). She didn’t stop there, by the end of the day, she had completed a total of 144 makeovers, also earning the record for the most cosmetic makeovers in 24 hours (individual).

“The idea of daring to be different drove me,” Tacha told the Guinness World Records team. “Makeup has always been my safe space, it’s how I express myself.”

Each makeover followed strict criteria, participants received full facial treatments, including foundation, concealer, blush, two eyeshadows, mascara, lip liner and gloss, finishing powder, and eyebrow styling. Tacha’s accomplishment surpassed the previous 24-hour record of 100 makeovers, held by Mary Yongai of Sierra Leone.

Tacha recalled her childhood fascination with makeup, often clashing with her mother, a devout church worker who disapproved of her passion.

“She’d throw my products away, and I’d save up to buy them again,” she said. “That pattern taught me persistence to keep fighting for what I love.”

Tacha says it’s a message of resilience, creativity, and empowerment for African women.

“This record was born from that same spirit, resilience and the courage to stand out. I wanted to show that Nigerian women can achieve anything they put their minds to, that creativity is powerful, and that African women deserve global recognition,” she said.

Tacha now joins the over 40 Nigerian Guinness World Record holders, making history in various fields.

Surpassing the previous 61-hour benchmark set by Norwegian players, Onakoya’s feat is not just a triumph of endurance but also a powerful act of purpose.

The chess marathon began on April 17, alongside U.S. National Master Shawn Martinez.

“For all the dreamers! We’ve officially BROKEN THE RECORD,” Onakoya shared in a jubilant post on X (formerly Twitter).

Adding, “Every move, every hour, a love letter to children who’ve never known the luxury of a second chance.”

Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, had the aim of raising $1 million toward building a free school for homeless and underserved children in Nigeria.

“If you had 70 hours to change the world , what would you do? Not for applause. Not for records. But for the quiet dreamers who need to see someone leap - so they know it’s possible to fly,” he wrote.

This record-setting is yet another milestone for the 29-year-old who, in 2024, played chess for 60 hours straight in a personal challenge.

Equipped only with smartphones, these women have created three short documentaries highlighting themes of education, independence, and community resilience.

The initiative, launched by filmmaker Mohamed Fawi, aims to nurture Sudan’s first filmmaking community while empowering women to share untold stories. “After the war began, I felt compelled to contribute from within Sudan,” Fawi said.

“The most fitting approach was to create a project for women, as many workshop participants focused on women’s issues.”

One participant, Zeinab Alfadel, explained the process: “We were trained in filming, scriptwriting, and directing. Afterwards, we moved on to production and editing, culminating in the release of our films.”

For Eithar Khairy, another filmmaker, the experience was transformative. “It was challenging but rewarding. The idea came from Miss Bakhita, who suggested making a documentary during the ‘Cinema by Women Workshop.’”

The "Women's Cinema Project," as it’s called, has trained 11 women so far, creating a platform for voices long overlooked in Sudan.

Rhode, who now resides in Berlin, Germany, says Johannesburg's worn-out and abandoned structures continue to motivate his work.

"The rough Johannesburg canvas serves as an inspiration for me," Rhode explained to the AFP. "It motivates me to come back and inject energy, life, and a new narrative into these decayed spaces. It’s calling for regeneration," he remarked.

During his recent visit to South Africa, Rhode was deeply affected by the collapse of many once-thriving structures. This experience has driven him to use his art as both a form of revitalisation and a critique of the political systems he believes have failed the city.

"Seeing these collapsing structures had a profound impact on me," Rhode said. "It’s motivated me to come back and allow my art to function as a critique of the political systems that are also collapsing."

One of the key pieces in his new collection, titled Block of Flats, which he says mirrors the urban decay found in Johannesburg’s neighbourhoods.

Thailand Roundup: Calls for peace, untapped music industry, travel scam

Calls for peace

NGOs in Southern Thailand are urging the new government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to prioritise regional peace. Civil Society Council chairman Lamai Manakarn expressed concern over the ongoing security issues and the stalled peace negotiation process, which has been ineffective since its initiation. As reported by the Sun The council, representing over 40 NGOs, plans to submit an open letter requesting the government's focus on resolving the conflict that has resulted in over 7,000 deaths since 2004. Paetongtarn, the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history, is expected to outline her policies soon, including addressing these pressing issues.

Corruption threats

The Democrat Party of Thailand, represented by Secretary-General Dech-it Khaothong, has pledged to withdraw from the coalition government if corruption occurs within the administration. Speaking on his first day as deputy public health minister, Dech-it reinforced the party's anti-corruption stance and stated that if the government remains graft-free, they will serve their full term. Despite claims of strong local support for joining the coalition, a recent survey revealed that 54% of respondents oppose the party's participation, with only 12% strongly supporting it. Dech-it indicated the party would evaluate its coalition performance monthly, Bangkok Post reports .

Thai-Chinese high-speed train project

Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote is seeking Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's approval to sign a construction contract for a 13.3-kilometre segment of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train project, which has faced delays. The contract has been awarded but is held up due to concerns about the proximity of Ayutthaya Station to the UNESCO World Heritage site. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) completed a Heritage Impact Assessment and submitted it to UNESCO, agreeing to lower the elevated track's height from 19 to 17 metres, Bangkok Post reported. However, relocating the route is not feasible due to budget and time constraints. The SRT aims to finalise the contract by October and proceed with the project irrespective of UNESCO's final recommendation.

Untapped music industry

Experts from Thailand's Creative Economy Agency emphasise the country's potential in the global music industry, bolstered by the government's soft power promotion policy. The IFPI's Global Music Report 2024 noted that the global music market generated $28.6 billion in 2023, with a significant contribution from streaming (67.3% of total revenue). Countries like South Korea, China, and India are driving this growth, particularly through the popularity of K-pop. According to The Star , Thai music revenue reached $126 million in 2023, up 18.6% thanks to government initiatives like the Music Exchange project promoting Thai artists internationally. Innovations in technology, such as virtual reality and AI, continue to transform the music experience and engage global audiences.

Travel scam

A fraudulent tour company in Thailand has scammed over 150 victims, accumulating around 20 million baht. The scammers, identified by authorities as two individuals, operated by falsely advertising overseas employment and travel packages, mainly via social media. Victims recounted paying significant amounts for tours, only to lose contact with the company as departure dates approached. Investigations are ongoing, with victims gathering evidence to assist authorities. Concerns arise that the suspects may have fled the country, complicating recovery efforts for the defrauded funds, as reported by Asean Now .

National Arts Festival

The vibrant fabric of Zambia's cultural landscape was prominently displayed during the 2024 National Arts Festival in Lusaka. Organised meticulously by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Art and the Zambia National Arts Council, this festival served as a nexus for artistic expression, bringing together artists from various backgrounds. The News Diggers reports that through a series of captivating performances and fashion shows, this event underscored the emotional resonance of art while fostering a communal spirit, culminating in a celebration of creativity that reaffirmed the vital role of art in mirroring the nation's socio-cultural essence.

Google to build an AI centre

In a significant technological advancement, Google has announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence at the University of Zambia. This initiative comes after a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Technology and Science. As articulated by Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati, this AI centre marks a pioneering effort as the first of its kind in Southern Africa, strategically situated at the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN). As reported by TechAfrica News , the primary objective of this centre is to empower young innovators, equipping them with the necessary tools to devise solutions for local challenges. Furthermore, ZAMREN's noteworthy achievement of connecting 150 institutions to high-speed internet is instrumental in broadening student access, thereby fostering an environment conducive to innovation.

Tanzania-Zambia Railway to be rejuvenated

The regional cooperation between China, Tanzania, and Zambia is set to rejuvenate the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), which was initially established in the 1970s to enhance Zambia’s accessibility. This collaborative agreement, formalised during the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, signals a public-private partnership aimed at the rehabilitation of this critical transport artery. According to Globely News , the revival of TAZARA is especially pertinent given Zambia's current financial challenges, as this renewed focus by China is also an effort to counterbalance the strategic movements surrounding the U.S.-backed Lobito Corridor project which connects Zambia to Angola’s Atlantic port. Concurrently, Tanzania is undertaking its railway network expansion, with aspirations to position Dar es Salaam as a pivotal trade hub in the region.

Huawei donates telecom towers

Huawei has donated equipment for 25 communication towers to enhance national communication services. The donation, including wireless and transmission technology power systems, was formalized during President Hakainde Hichilema’s visit to China in September 2023 and solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Technology and Science in June 2024. Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati announced that Zamtel will oversee the construction of these towers in remote areas with limited phone service access, as reported by Telecompaper .

De-dollarisation strategy in progress

Zambia's central bank is actively engaging in a de-dollarisation strategy to mitigate the depreciation of the kwacha, which has faced a staggering 22% decline against the dollar over the past year. Governor Denny Kalyalya disclosed that this initiative, first announced in June, is designed to curtail the use of foreign currency in local transactions, thereby augmenting the effectiveness of monetary policy. Bitcoinnews.com reports this plan, however, has encountered criticism as Zambia grapples with the challenges of recovering from a debt default coupled with an extensive power crisis that restricts electricity supply to households. Despite the limited usage of foreign currency in everyday transactions, certain sectors, notably real estate and automotive sales, continue to engage in dollar-based pricing. The central bank remains in consultation with various stakeholders, and a timeline for the implementation of this de-dollarisation strategy has yet to be established.

The "Taylor Swift | Songbook Trail" exhibition includes 13 installations spread across the museum's galleries. Each installation represents a different chapter of Swift's career, offering fans a unique glimpse into her artistic journey.

Among the items on display are:

• Cowbow boots worn by Swift during her early career as a country musician.

• Ukulele played on the "Speak Now" world tour.

• Fisherman cap featured on the "Red (Taylor's Version)" album cover.

"It's been a really fast-moving project, where I got to select works from the collection," said Bailey. "I wanted to make sure that we were able to showcase costumes, but also musical instruments, objects that kind of convey her whole career and creativity."

The exhibition is designed as a journey through the museum, with each installation carefully placed to connect with significant moments in Swift's career.

Known for his comedic genius in films like "Anchorman," Ferrell, along with Turteltaub, made their first appearance in Kigali on Tuesday, July 23.

The event provided a platform for local artists and filmmakers to interact with and learn from the Hollywood veterans, The Times Rwanda reports.

Ferrell shared valuable advice with the attendees, emphasizing the importance of confidence, especially in comedy. “Confidence matters, especially in comedy. You just have to not fear anything and stay focused on camera,” he said.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by aspiring artists in Africa, Ferrell noted, “I learnt that when someone aspires to be an artist in Africa, their parents end up disappointed, yet there are many talents on the continent that can thrive. I believe that there is potential in Rwandan creatives to change this narrative.”

While this marks Ferrell's first visit to Africa, Turteltaub is no stranger to the continent. He has previously shot films in various African countries, including Rwanda, collaborating with local filmmakers such as Eric Kabera, the founder of Kwetu Films.

Turteltaub highlighted their interest in the arts, culture, and the creative economy . “What interests us is actually the arts and culture, the creative economy. And Jon has been here before and he has been interested in just connecting people to people and having all kinds of conversations,” he explained.

One Rwandan creative shared her experience from the session, expressing gratitude for the encouragement she received. “I just got a new film , and they were very supportive by just telling me to trust myself. There's a reason why I was chosen for the role in the first place, and for me to just immerse myself in the character. It's not that I didn't know, but to hear from a great actor makes me realize that I am doing the right thing and I'm on the correct path,” she said.

SAG-AFTRA, a union representing around 160,000 entertainment and media professionals globally, has supported Scarlett Johansson after the American actress raised concerns about the voice feature of OpenAI's new system, claiming it sounded "eerily similar" to her own.

OpenAI recently unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4o, which includes an audio-interacting persona named "Sky." Johansson revealed on May 20 that she had previously declined a request from OpenAI to use her voice for this system.

In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman clarified that the voice in question belonged to a different professional actress and announced that Sky's voice would be removed from the company's products.

"We thank Ms. Johansson for speaking out on this issue of crucial importance to all SAG-AFTRA members. We share in her concerns and fully support her right to have clarity and transparency regarding the voice used," a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson stated.

SAG-AFTRA has been instrumental in securing agreements from Hollywood studios for better pay and protections against the use of AI for actors.

The debate over actors' rights to their voices and images has become a central issue in Hollywood as studios explore AI's potential for creating new entertainment. This concern grows more pressing as computer-generated images and sounds become increasingly indistinguishable from human ones.

SAG-AFTRA emphasised that it is "strongly championing federal legislation that would protect their voices and likenesses" and will continue to engage with OpenAI and other stakeholders "to enshrine transparent and resilient protections for all of us."

The announcement was made through a post on the official Guinness World Records platform, responding to an inquiry seeking clarification on the outcome of the singing marathon.

Afua Asantewaa Aduonum had undertaken a remarkable challenge to break the existing record for the longest continuous singing marathon, a feat requiring significant endurance and vocal prowess. Despite her efforts, the official confirmation from Guinness World Records indicates that the attempt did not meet the criteria for a successful record-breaking achievement.

Before the disqualification, Afua Asantewaa revealed to local media Joy News that she paid $750 to expedite the priority review process with Guinness World Records. In an interview, Asantewaa explained that the standard review process typically takes up to twelve weeks, but by making the payment, she was able to fast-track the process and receive results within five days.

“I have an account with them [GWR], so right after the record attempt, they requested our files because we were putting everything together. They reached out to us and requested our videos. I think after two weeks of waiting, we decided to go in for a priority review,” Afua said. “The normal review takes not less or more than twelve weeks, but if you want it quick, you pay an amount of money, and they review your file within five working days, and that is what we paid for. Officially, it is $650, but if you are going to pay into an account, you have to pay some transaction fees. So totally, we paid around $750,” she added.

Afua’s singing marathon began at midnight on December 24 and ended on December 29, 2023.

Here are a few reactions on social media following the announcement.
