In a statement on Tuesday, Russian Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said the agency had launched a case under terrorism-related charges following the attack on the A240 highway.

According to the committee, a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle struck a bus belonging to Rechitsa Youth Sports School No. 2 while it was travelling from Belarus on the Gomel–Gelendzhik route.

The bus was carrying 44 passengers, including 28 young athletes heading to a holiday destination.

“Early reports suggest that one woman was killed. Six people were injured. They have been taken to hospital,” Petrenko said, adding that the number of casualties was still being verified.

The Investigative Committee said experienced investigators, forensic experts and other specialists had been assigned to the case.

“The investigation will establish the type of unmanned aerial vehicle and explosives used, as well as the individuals from the Ukrainian Armed Forces responsible for another inhumane crime against civilian children ,” Petrenko stated.

The committee described the incident as a terrorist act and said it would seek to identify those responsible.

Speaking at a party congress in Budapest, Orban dismissed corruption allegations against his former government and turned his criticism towards Tisza officials, claiming newly released asset declarations revealed significant personal wealth among members of the ruling party.

“The newly published asset declarations have shown the entire country that Tisza Party representatives are wealthy,” Orban said.

“They have also taken the lead in luxury lifestyles. Gifted BMWs are flying around, ministers are being driven in Maseratis, while our representatives can only look on,” he added.

Orban also condemned what he described as politically motivated investigations into his former administration, arguing that the government's actions amounted to an abuse of power.

“The current showcase investigations, politically motivated proceedings, aggressiveness and abuse of power will ultimately work in our favour,” he said. “The government is gradually entering into an abusive relationship with the entire country.”

His remarks came after Hungary's Integrity Authority said senior officials from the Orban era could potentially face prosecution over an estimated €3.5 billion in missing EU funds . While neither Orban nor members of his inner circle have been directly accused, parliament has established five commissions to investigate alleged corruption under his administration.

Despite attacking the government, Orban acknowledged that Fidesz had contributed to its own defeat in April's election . “Our election message did not work, while our opponents' message proved far more attractive,” he said.

Delegates overwhelmingly voted to keep Orban as Fidesz leader, backing him by 729 votes to eight.

The former prime minister's re-election comes as Fidesz seeks to rebuild after losing power to Peter Magyar's Tisza Party, which secured a two-thirds parliamentary majority in April.

Saint Lucia bets on diplomacy and partnerships in a changing world

That approach comes as the government begins a new term following the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s historic electoral victory in December 2025. While the win provided a strong mandate at home, it also coincided with growing challenges abroad.

Speaking to Atlantico , Deputy Prime Minister Ernest Hilaire said:

Hilaire is confident of retaining his island's precious visa-free access to Europe, as a result of upgrades to its Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP). The European Union has taken a tougher stance on citizenship-by-investment schemes, with its latest Visa Suspension Mechanism report arguing that the operation of such programmes could itself become grounds for suspending visa-free access to the Schengen Area. The report specifically highlighted Caribbean countries operating citizenship programmes, including Saint Lucia.

Hilaire says he is working to convince the EU of the importance and justification for retaining their in-depth partnership.

"The dialogue we maintain with Brussels is real, continuous and conducted in good faith," he said in an interview.

The debate is about more than passports. For Saint Lucia, it is also about preserving one of the benefits that have made Caribbean citizenship programmes attractive: visa-free access to Europe. The issue has become even more sensitive after the European Union pointed to Vanuatu as an example of a country that lost its visa-free status over concerns related to investor citizenship schemes.

However, Hilaire argues that Saint Lucia's programme has changed significantly in recent years.

"Following the Caribbean memorandum of understanding signed in early 2024, we have raised the minimum thresholds, strengthened due diligence, harmonised our standards with our four regional partners and introduced, from 2026, a five-year initial passport, a mandatory orientation programme, a thirty-day stay in the country and full biometric registration."

Hilaire, the Deputy Prime Minister responsible for Tourism, Investment and Commerce, among others, says the debate goes beyond technical requirements.

"Saint Lucia is a sovereign democracy of 180,000 people, facing climate vulnerability, debt constraints and limited fiscal space. We are not asking Europe for charity: we are asking for a partnership grounded in facts. The conversation must be about evidence, not only about fears."

Zone of peace

Beyond the debate over investment migration, Saint Lucia is also responding to a changing geopolitical landscape. Increased military activity, diverging positions within CARICOM and competition among global powers have brought renewed attention to the Caribbean.

Hilaire believes the region's traditional approach remains relevant.

"Saint Lucia's position is one of quiet diplomacy. We have always regarded the Caribbean as a zone of peace, and we continue to do so," he said.

He argues that small states can play an important role in an increasingly multipolar world, serving as what he calls "honest brokers" in international affairs.

The government is also looking to strengthen ties with France through Martinique and Guadeloupe. Hilaire describes the relationship as "one of the most underestimated in the Atlantic" and sees opportunities for deeper cooperation on climate resilience, security and culture.

Tourism remains central to Saint Lucia's economy, but the government is seeking new markets. While North America remains the island's largest source of visitors, Hilaire believes France offers untapped potential, particularly through Saint Lucia's shared Creole heritage and creative industries. The key challenge, he says, is improving air connectivity with Europe.

Despite concerns about climate change, debt pressures and shifting global alliances, Hilaire remains optimistic.

"Small states have one underestimated asset: agility," he said. "We can move faster than the major powers on regulation, on partnerships, on positioning."

Hungary's PM Magyar accuses Orban government of hypocrisy on migration policy

Speaking at a press conference in Budapest, Magyar alleged that the previous Fidesz administration had been preparing reception facilities at a former agricultural school complex in Csermajor despite opposing migrant relocation schemes.

He also criticised the handling of Hungary's dispute with the European Union over asylum policy, arguing that the previous government had knowingly exposed the country to substantial financial penalties.

“This daily one million euros, about which the cabinet meeting minutes acknowledge, not that it is justified, but that the previous government did everything to ensure there would be a penalty of this severity,” Magyar said.

In June 2024, the European Court of Justice fined Hungary €200 million and imposed an additional €1 million daily penalty for failing to comply with EU asylum regulations.

Magyar said his government was exploring solutions used elsewhere in Europe to meet EU requirements while avoiding the establishment of migrant camps in Hungary.

“We are working to develop such a regulation so that, on the one hand, there indeed won't be migrant camps in Hungary, and we won't have to continue paying this daily fine of one million euros,” he said.

Asked about the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, which entered into force on Friday, Magyar said Hungary would favour providing technical assistance to other member states rather than accepting relocated asylum seekers.

“There is a third option, for example, which the Orban government also used previously, providing additional technical border protection assistance through Frontex to either Greece or Serbia,” he said.

Magyar argued that the pact includes broader provisions beyond migrant relocation and introduces stricter migration rules than previous EU frameworks.

Brazil received eight red cards in a chaotic 1-0 loss to the United States women's national team in Fortaleza. Coach Arthur Elias and three assistants were sent off during the second half, while players Bia Zaneratto and Tarciane were dismissed late in the match. Kerolin and Ludmila also saw red after the final whistle for dissent. Sophia Wilson scored the game's only goal in the 63rd minute, with Brazil failing to register a shot on target before a crowd of more than 55,000 fans.

Brazil intercepts 108 Cuban migrants as asylum requests surge

Brazilian authorities rescued 108 Cuban migrants from suspected smugglers in Roraima state, marking the largest humanitarian rescue operation ever recorded in the region. Five alleged traffickers were arrested. Officials say the operation reflects a growing wave of Cuban migration through Brazil's northern border with Guyana. Cubans became the leading nationality seeking refugee status in Brazil in 2025, with more than 40,000 applications, driven by Cuba's deepening economic crisis. Roraima and neighbouring Amapá have emerged as key entry points, with authorities warning that migration flows could continue to rise amid worsening conditions on the island.

EU deepens digital ties with Brazil to reduce reliance on US tech

The European Union and Brazil are set to sign a digital partnership covering data , cybersecurity, connectivity and online safety, as Brussels seeks to strengthen ties with trusted partners and reduce dependence on U.S. technology. EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said Brazil will become the bloc's fifth digital partner, joining Canada, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. The move follows the EU-Mercosur trade agreement and comes as Europe works to boost its own tech sovereignty, particularly in cloud services and semiconductor production.

Brazil's Alisson unfazed by World Cup favourites tag

Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker says being labelled a World Cup favourite offers no advantage, insisting what matters is a team's form when the tournament begins. The Liverpool keeper, fully fit for his third World Cup, credited coach Carlo Ancelotti with improving morale after a difficult qualifying campaign. He said Brazil have become more organised defensively under the Italian and is ready for their opening match against Morocco in New Jersey.

Brazilian woman, 38, accused of posing as child in years-long fraud

A 38-year-old Brazilian woman has been arrested for allegedly posing as a 12-year-old girl and deceiving a couple who housed and supported her for more than a year. Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira is accused of fraud and identity offences after reportedly creating a fake identity, convincing the family to cover her expenses and treating her as a child. Prosecutors described the case as an "elaborate fraud scheme" involving emotional manipulation. Authorities say Oliveira has faced similar allegations in other Brazilian states.

Demonstrators outside the Highfield House Hotel carried national flags and banners while chanting slogans including “Send them home” and “Deportation.” The protest later moved into the city centre, where police attempted to restrict access to certain streets before the crowd returned to the hotel.

A counter-demonstration organised by Southampton Stand Up Against Racism also took place. Police maintained a separation between the two groups before the counter-protest dispersed.

The demonstrations followed the sentencing of 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 21 years, for the murder of Henry Nowak in Southampton last December.

The case drew national attention after police bodycam footage emerged showing Nowak telling officers he had been stabbed while being detained at the scene. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has since called for an urgent review of laws governing the carrying of bladed articles for religious and ceremonial purposes, saying mistakes made during the incident should be examined.

Tensions were further heightened by a knife attack in Belfast on Monday in which a man was seriously injured after being slashed in the head and neck. Video of the incident circulated widely on social media .

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as “sickening.” Police arrested a 30-year-old Sudanese national in connection with the Belfast attack and said there was currently no evidence to suggest it was terrorism-related.

According to police, the suspect travelled from Sudan to Paris before entering Ireland through Dublin and later moving to Belfast, where he sought asylum and was granted permission to remain.

From the number of teams involved to the countries hosting it, the 2026 edition will introduce several major changes to football’s biggest competition.

For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations will compete for the trophy, expanding the tournament from its traditional 32-team format. The expansion means more countries, more matches, and more opportunities for teams to make history.

The tournament will also be the first to be hosted by three countries. The United States will stage matches across 11 venues, while Mexico will host games in three cities and Canada in two. The competition will run until 19 July 2026, with the final scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The opening match will see Mexico face South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The expanded tournament will feature 104 matches, a significant increase from the previous 64. Teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing, along with the eight best third-placed teams. Those 32 teams will then move into a newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage.

The list of qualified teams includes some of football’s most successful nations. Former champions Brazil , Argentina, Germany, France, England, Spain and Uruguay are all back. Brazil arrives as the tournament’s most successful nation and is identified as a five-time World Cup winner.

Several countries that have reached World Cup finals without lifting the trophy are also in the field, including Croatia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Czechia.

Among the teams with semifinal appearances in their history are Morocco, the United States, Austria, Belgium, South Korea, Portugal and Türkiye. Morocco enters the tournament as the highest-ranked African team, ranked eighth in the world.

Other nations, including Senegal, Switzerland, Mexico, Colombia , Ghana and Paraguay, will be aiming to improve on previous quarter-final appearances.

The tournament also features a large group of countries that have never gone beyond the quarter-finals. Among them are Japan, Australia, Algeria, Norway, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, South Africa , Egypt, Scotland, Canada, IR Iran, Iraq, DR Congo, Haiti, New Zealand, Panama, Qatar, Côte d'Ivoire, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Some teams are returning after long absences. Scotland is back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, while Iraq returns for the first time since 1986.

Perhaps the biggest stories, however, belong to four nations that will experience the World Cup for the first time. Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan have all secured historic debuts and will be making their first appearances on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking on Saturday after the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Kobyakov pointed to a proposed sanctions bill being developed in the U.S. House of Representatives under the Trump administration.

“Why did Marco Rubio and the US Congress propose to tighten sanctions the day before yesterday?” Kobyakov said. “It became clear to them that the outcome was not in their favour, but in our favour. And now what do they need to do? They need to make our lives as difficult as possible.”

He also criticised Washington's role in peace efforts, alleging that the United States was attempting to distance itself from negotiations after supporting Ukraine throughout the conflict.

“The United States is trying to get out of the negotiations,” Kobyakov said. “The United States ignited the conflict , dragged everyone into it, and now they pretend that they can become mediators.”

His remarks came days after U.S. lawmakers announced plans to develop additional sanctions targeting Russia.

Despite political tensions, Kobyakov said American businesses appeared interested in rebuilding ties with Moscow, citing the presence of a U.S. delegation at this year's forum after years of limited participation.

One of the released servicemen described the hardships of captivity and the hope that sustained many prisoners.

“Every day we woke up wanting to come back, and all the other guys there thought the same,” he said. “We prayed constantly. We all have crosses and icons. Without faith, we wouldn’t have returned or survived.”

Earlier, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced that Moscow and Kyiv had carried out a “185-for-185” prisoner exchange with mediation from the United Arab Emirates.

“On 5 June, 185 Russian servicemen were returned from territory controlled by the Kiev regime. In exchange, 185 prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Armed Forces were handed over,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that the released Russian servicemen were initially transferred to Belarus, where they received medical and psychological assistance before returning home.

According to Russian authorities, the soldiers will now undergo further treatment and rehabilitation at specialised medical facilities in Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed the exchange, saying 185 Ukrainian servicemen and one civilian had been returned from Russian captivity. He thanked those involved in facilitating the swap, including international mediators.

The United Arab Emirates has played a recurring role in brokering prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine,

Footage released by Ukrainian authorities showed emotional scenes as freed soldiers arrived by bus at an undisclosed location, made phone calls to loved ones and embraced relatives after their release.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 185 military personnel and one civilian had been returned in the exchange. “Another 185 Ukrainian defenders are returning home from Russian captivity today. One civilian is also returning alongside the defenders,” Zelensky said in a statement.

He noted that some of the released prisoners had been held by Russia since 2022. “I thank everyone who makes this possible: the team working on prisoner exchanges and our partners,” he added.

Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the swap, saying the returned Russian servicemen were in Belarus, where they were receiving medical and psychological support.

“After receiving the necessary psychological and medical assistance, the Russian servicemen will be transported to the Russian Federation for further treatment and rehabilitation,” the ministry said.

The United Arab Emirates helped facilitate the exchange through humanitarian mediation efforts, according to Russian authorities.

Prisoner swaps have remained one of the few areas of cooperation between Kyiv and Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Wednesday, the ambassador highlighted the growing economic influence of BRICS countries and their importance to developing nations.

“BRICS represents a significant proportion of the Global South countries, and the Global South accounts for around 45 per cent of the world’s population,” da Silva Cunha said.

He argued that the economic weight of BRICS now exceeds that of the Group of Seven ( G7 ) industrialised nations.

“As a member of BRICS, Russia will be able to play a key role in Africa’s economic development,” he added.

The remarks came during the 29th edition of SPIEF, which is being held from June 3 to 6 in St Petersburg.

Organisers expect more than 20,000 participants from around 76 countries to attend the forum, including political leaders, business executives and policymakers.

For the first time in several years, representatives from the United States have also accepted an invitation to attend the event.

Established in 1997, SPIEF has become one of Russia’s flagship international economic gatherings and a platform for discussions on global trade , investment and development. Russian President Vladimir Putin has participated regularly since 2005.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei strongly condemned a reported Ukrainian strike on a girls’ dormitory in Starobilsk that killed 21 people and injured dozens. Speaking in Tehran, he described the attack as a violation of legal and moral standards and labelled it a war crime, calling on European nations to take consistent positions on international humanitarian law.

The incident has further escalated tensions, with Russia denouncing the strike as terrorism and launching retaliatory attacks on Ukrainian military infrastructure. Meanwhile, conflicting claims persist over the intended target of the original strike. Baqaei also addressed broader geopolitical tensions, criticising US actions and noting ongoing but inconclusive diplomatic exchanges between Tehran and Washington.

Germany’s defence chief Carsten Breuer warned that Russia could develop the capability to launch a conventional attack on NATO territory by 2029, stressing the need for urgent military preparedness. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, he said allies must be fully ready for worst-case scenarios, even if such an attack is not certain. He also pointed to longer-term planning, suggesting warfare could undergo a major transformation by the mid-2030s.

Russia has firmly rejected these warnings, with President Vladimir Putin dismissing claims of future aggression against Europe as “a blatant, brazen lie”. The exchange highlights growing tensions between NATO and Moscow, as defence leaders gather at one of Asia’s top security summits to address rising global security risks.

Footage released by the Russian military showed aerial bombardments and first-person drone strike videos targeting buildings, vehicles and troop positions.

According to Moscow, units from the Northern Group of Forces are continuing offensive operations aimed at creating what it described as a “ security buffer zone” in the Sumy and Kharkov regions.

“The enemy attempted to redeploy reserves from elite assault units in order to hold their positions, but these efforts were unsuccessful,” the ministry said in a statement. “The militants suffered losses and were forced to withdraw.”

Ukraine had not commented on the Russian claims at the time of publication.

However, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that air strikes had been recorded in several areas of the Sumy region, including near Tolstodubovo, over the previous 24 hours.

Russia launched its full-scale military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022 following its recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People ’s Republics.

Kyiv condemned the move as an invasion, while Western countries imposed sweeping sanctions on Moscow and increased military support for Ukraine.

Spain tops Europe’s LGBT rights ranking

Main Points

Spain has emerged as Europe’s highest-ranking country for LGBT rights protections in 2025, according to Rainbow Map and Index published by advocacy group ILGA-Europe, highlighting widening differences in equality laws and protections across the continent.

The ranking, visualised by World Visualized using ILGA-Europe’s 2025 data, measures legal and policy standards affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across Europe.

Spain led the index with a score of 88.7%, narrowly ahead of Malta at 87.7%, while Iceland, Belgium and Denmark also ranked among Europe’s strongest performers on LGBT equality protections.

At the opposite end of the scale, Russia recorded the lowest score at just 2% , followed by Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Belarus, reflecting ongoing restrictions on LGBT rights and public expression.

Countries at the top of the ranking generally combine anti-discrimination laws, same-sex marriage recognition, legal gender recognition frameworks and protections against hate crimes.

Spain has expanded LGBT protections significantly over the past two decades and remains one of Europe’s most progressive countries on gender identity and marriage equality laws.

Malta, frequently ranked highly by ILGA-Europe in recent years, has been recognised for broad legal protections covering family rights, gender recognition and anti-discrimination measures.

Nordic countries, including Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, also maintained strong scores, reflecting long-standing support for civil liberties and equality legislation.

Several Eastern European and Caucasus countries continued ranking near the bottom of the index amid growing political and cultural tensions surrounding LGBT rights.

Russia’s low ranking follows years of increasingly restrictive legislation, including laws banning what authorities describe as “LGBT propaganda” and broader crackdowns on LGBT activism.

Türkiye and Belarus also recorded low scores as rights groups raised concerns over restrictions on freedom of assembly, censorship and discrimination protections.

In Georgia, Armenia and parts of Eastern Europe, activists say conservative political movements and religious influence continue slowing progress on LGBT equality reforms.

ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map evaluates countries using criteria including equality laws, family rights, hate crime protections, legal gender recognition and civil society freedoms.

Speaking alongside Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela said the EU proposed increasing funding from €225 million to €530 million.

“Europe has fundamental interests in how the Arctic develops,” Sikela said.

He said the EU’s updated Arctic strategy would focus on investment in energy, education , connectivity and the “responsible development of resources.”

“It will not be written in Brussels and delivered here,” Sikela said. “Greenlandic input at this formative stage is one of the central reasons for my visit.”

Sikela described Greenland as central to Europe’s Arctic strategy, saying the EU wanted to “build with Greenland” rather than simply benefit from its resources.

Prime Minister Nielsen said Greenland was interested in developing a “stronger and better” partnership with the European Union.

Responding to questions about tensions with Washington, Nielsen denied that the meeting was intended as a political message to U.S. President Donald Trump .

“In Greenland, in terms of the United States, we have a working group. We have a dialogue to try to sort things out,” he said.

He added that the strengthening of EU-Greenland ties had been under discussion long before the recent geopolitical tensions surrounding the Arctic island.

The commissioner’s visit coincided with the first official trip to Greenland by Jeff Landry, Trump’s special envoy to the territory.

Trump has repeatedly pushed for the United States to acquire Greenland, arguing that control of the island is important for countering growing Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic.

AFP journalists witnessed drones being launched overnight from a secret location by Ukraine’s unmanned aerial systems forces.

The operation was overseen by Robert Brovdi, known by the call sign “Madyar,” commander of Ukraine’s drone forces.

“The priority remains the constant development of the use of long-range strike capabilities against a wide range of military targets dispersed over the vast territory of the aggressor country,” Brovdi told AFP.

According to Brovdi, fuel and energy facilities across southern Russia, the Urals and Siberia remain key targets, including oil terminals, refineries and gas processing complexes.

He said the facilities help finance Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attacks as a “fully justified” response to ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure .

Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone attacks to strike deep inside Russian territory, targeting sites Kyiv says are linked to Moscow’s military-industrial complex. Russia stated on Sunday that Kyiv bombed its territory with 600 drones, in attacks that caused four deaths.

Lazare died on Thursday, his carer Ophélie Boudol said on Friday.

Although the dog was widely believed to hold the longevity record, Guinness World Records told AFP it could not officially confirm the title because it had not received an application or supporting evidence before Lazare’s death.

Boudol said she was shocked when she first discovered the dog’s age after adopting him.

“One of the volunteers looked up his exact breed,” she said. “That’s when I saw his date of birth, 1995. I was astonished, and even now I still say to myself, ‘How is that possible?’”

Despite his age, Boudol described Lazare as affectionate and energetic.

“We know that from one day to the next he could pass away, because at 30 years old it’s still quite remarkable,” she said. “But he really had such a lovable personality. He was very cuddly despite his age, and quite lively as well.”

Animal welfare officer Anne-Sophie Moyon from the Annecy Marlioz SPA described Lazare’s case as extraordinary.

“We had obviously never seen 30-year-old dogs before,” Moyon said. “If we’ve seen 20-year-old dogs, that’s already remarkable.”

She said staff at the shelter were stunned when they were contacted about a dog believed to be three decades old.

The average lifespan of a papillon or toy spaniel is usually between 12 and 16 years.

The Eurovision Song Contest, widely promoted as a celebration of music and European unity, has repeatedly been disrupted by political tensions, diplomatic disputes and boycotts throughout its nearly 70-year history.

While Eurovision officially bans overt political messaging, historical records from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) show that geopolitical conflicts have frequently spilt into the competition, leading countries to withdraw, boycott or protest participation by rival states.

One of the earliest major controversies occurred in 1969 when Austria declined to participate in the Eurovision contest hosted in Madrid under the dictatorship of Spanish leader Francisco Franco, a move widely viewed by historians and Eurovision researchers as politically motivated.

Regional tensions between Greece and Turkey later became a recurring source of Eurovision disputes. Greece boycotted the 1975 contest following Turkey’s military intervention in Cyprus the previous year. In response, Turkey withdrew from Eurovision in 1976 after Greece returned to the competition with a song referencing the Cyprus conflict.

In 1979, Turkey again withdrew after Israel hosted the contest in Jerusalem following its Eurovision victory the previous year. Morocco later participated only once in Eurovision, in 1980, during a year when Israel did not compete. The North African country never returned to the competition afterwards.

The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict also affected Eurovision participation. Armenia withdrew from the 2012 contest hosted in Baku, citing security concerns amid ongoing tensions between the two countries over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Political scrutiny surrounding Israel’s Eurovision participation has intensified in recent years because of the war in Gaza. Broadcasters and political groups in countries including Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia and the Netherlands have faced growing domestic pressure to oppose or reconsider participation alongside Israel.

However, as of May 2026, no participating broadcaster has officially withdrawn from the contest. Several broadcasters and public figures have instead called on the EBU to review Israel’s eligibility, drawing comparisons with Russia’s suspension from Eurovision following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The EBU has repeatedly defended its position by arguing that Eurovision is a competition between broadcasters rather than governments and that the organisation remains politically neutral.

Russia remains suspended indefinitely from Eurovision after the EBU expelled Russian broadcasters in 2022. Belarus was also excluded after its state broadcaster, BTRC, was suspended by the EBU in 2021 over concerns involving media freedom and contest rule violations.

Political scientists and media researchers have long argued that Eurovision reflects broader European tensions despite its entertainment focus. Studies published in journals including Popular Communication and Nationalities Papers have documented how voting patterns, alliances and withdrawals often mirror diplomatic relationships and regional conflicts.

Despite repeated controversies, Eurovision remains one of the world’s largest live entertainment events, attracting more than 160 million viewers annually, according to EBU figures.

Supporters argue that Eurovision provides a rare cultural platform where countries with strained political relationships can still interact peacefully through music and public voting.

Critics, however, say the competition increasingly struggles to separate entertainment from geopolitics in an era marked by wars, nationalism and social polarisation.

What Eurovision’s long history of withdrawals and political disputes ultimately reveals is that the contest has never existed entirely outside politics. Instead, it has often reflected Europe’s shifting diplomatic tensions, cultural divisions and international rivalries.

In a video address from Budapest on Wednesday, Orbán said Hungary’s economy, employment levels and national assets had improved significantly under his leadership.

“Hungary’s economic growth is now the second highest in the European Union ,” Orbán said. “Thanks to a work-based economic policy, one million more Hungarians are employed today than in 2010.”

He said the minimum wage had risen more than fourfold since 2010, while average salaries had also increased significantly.

Orbán also pointed to the repurchase of key assets, including the airport and energy companies, as well as an increase in Hungary’s gold reserves from three tonnes to more than 100 tonnes.

“This is the point from which the liberal government begins,” he said. “Let’s hope they do not ruin it.”

Orbán also defended his government’s energy policy, saying reduced utility prices and energy security were among its major achievements.

His remarks came days after Péter Magyar was sworn in as Hungary’s new prime minister, ending Orbán’s 16-year rule. Magyar’s centre-right Tisza party won a landslide victory in April, securing a two-thirds parliamentary majority.

In his inauguration speech, Magyar accused the former ruling elite of leaving Hungary politically and economically weakened, and pledged democratic and institutional reforms.

Speaking in Moscow, Putin said the missile has a range of more than 35,000 kilometres and can travel along both ballistic and suborbital trajectories.

“We started working on it in 2011,” Putin said. “It is the most powerful missile system in the world .”

He claimed the Sarmat’s warhead power is more than four times that of any existing Western counterpart, adding that the missile’s flight path gives it greater range and accuracy.

Putin said the system would be placed on combat duty by the end of the year.

Russia also released footage of what it said was the latest successful test launch of the missile.

The Russian leader also said two other nuclear-powered systems, the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle and the Burevestnik global-range cruise missile, are in the final stages of development.

He added that the medium-range Oreshnik missile system is already on combat duty and can also be fitted with nuclear warheads.

The Sarmat, developed by the Makeyev Design Bureau with industry partners, is a fifth-generation intercontinental ballistic missile. Moscow says it can deliver multiple warheads and carry Avangard hypersonic glide vehicles.

The missile’s first successful launch took place on April 20, 2022, at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia’s Arkhangelsk region.

The final passengers disembarked the MV Hondius in Tenerife, marking the end of a quarantine triggered by a hantavirus outbreak that disrupted its voyage. The ship docked at the Port of Granadilla, where passengers left in protective gear after a staged evacuation that began a day earlier, while a small crew remained onboard to sail the vessel to Rotterdam for disinfection. Authorities from 23 countries coordinated what was described as an unprecedented operation, involving medical screenings, contact tracing, and repatriation efforts across multiple continents. According to the World Health Organization , nine cases were identified, including seven confirmed infections and three deaths, after the outbreak—linked to the ship’s South America route—spread internationally through earlier disembarkations.

Speaking in Bratislava on Sunday, Fico said Slovakia had filed a complaint against the European Commission’s decision to end Russian gas imports.

“Our official stance is: let’s diversify the supply options for all fuels, but also keep open the possibility when it comes to Russian oil and gas,” Fico said.

He also criticised what he described as growing U.S. interest in European energy transit infrastructure .

“The Russians will supply the Americans with gas and oil at standard prices, and the Americans will sell it to us with an American high-margin surcharge,” he said. “Are we such idiots already?”

The remarks come as the EU continues to pursue its REPowerEU strategy, aimed at ending reliance on Russian fossil fuels following the escalation of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

Under the plan, Russian liquefied natural gas imports would be phased out by the end of 2026, while pipeline gas imports would end by September 30, 2027, with a possible short extension.

EU member states are also required to outline how they will replace Russian energy supplies.

Fico has repeatedly argued that a rapid break from Russian energy could increase costs for Central European countries that remain heavily dependent on imports.

Residents and dock workers in Tenerife, part of Spain, gathered at the port to protest the expected arrival of the MV Hondius following a deadly hantavirus outbreak on board. Demonstrators warned of a possible wider health crisis, with some drawing comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic and expressing concern over potential lockdowns. Protesters also criticised authorities for allowing the ship to dock, citing fears that local hospitals are already under pressure and may struggle to cope with additional cases. The vessel, carrying 150 people, had previously been held off Cape Verde after disembarkation was refused, before Spain authorised its arrival for quarantine and further checks. According to the World Health Organization , three cases have been confirmed, with five suspected and three deaths reported.

“We stand together. Victory has always been ours, and always will be,” Putin told the crowd. “Glory to the victorious people . Glory to the veterans. Glory to the Russian Armed Forces. Happy Victory Day.”

This year marks the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. Russia and several other former Soviet states mark Victory Day on May 9, while many Western countries observe Victory in Europe Day on May 8 because of the time difference when Germany’s surrender took effect.

The parade was held under tight security and was significantly scaled down, with heavy military hardware absent for the first time in nearly two decades. Russian officials cited security concerns linked to possible Ukrainian attacks.

The event came as Russia and Ukraine began a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to 11, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump . The deal also includes a planned prisoner exchange of 1,000 people from each side.

Zelensky made the remarks after a phone call with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, describing the conversation as positive.

“I just had a good conversation with the Prime Minister of Slovakia. Officially, we appreciate that Slovakia has taken steps to unblock the European support package for Ukraine and the sanctions package against Russia ,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader said both sides agreed on the need to maintain strong bilateral relations despite recent differences. According to Ukraine’s presidential office, Zelensky and Fico also discussed a possible in-person meeting, with their teams expected to work on scheduling details.

Zelensky said Slovakia had reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union. Ukraine’s presidential office said Fico told Zelensky that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s EU membership and is ready to share its own experience of accession.

The comments follow weeks of tensions over EU support for Ukraine, including a €90 billion package and additional sanctions against Moscow. The funding had been held up amid objections from Hungary and Slovakia linked to disputes over Russian oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline, Viory reports.

Ukraine said the pipeline had been damaged by a Russian strike and later repaired it after requests from the European Union. Zelensky said on April 21 that Kyiv had completed “all necessary steps” on its side and expected the EU to deliver on its commitments.

Hungary, under outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, had repeatedly blocked or delayed EU measures in support of Ukraine. Orbán’s Fidesz party lost Hungary’s April 12 election to Péter Magyar’s Tisza party, raising expectations in Kyiv and Brussels that Budapest’s stance on Ukraine could shift.

Orbán had accused Ukraine and the EU of interfering in Hungary’s election campaign, allegations that his opponents denied. The dispute over Ukraine aid, sanctions and energy transit had become a central issue in Hungary’s election campaign and in EU negotiations on support for Kyiv.

Speaking at a PSOE rally in Málaga on Friday, Sánchez said Spain would continue to defend international law and called for the detainee’s immediate release.

“We demand the release of the Spanish citizen who has been unlawfully detained by Netanyahu’s government ,” Sánchez said.

His comments followed the interception of vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led aid mission seeking to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza . Israeli authorities detained activists from the flotilla, including Spanish-Swedish activist Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, according to AP.

The flotilla began its Barcelona departure window in mid-April, with organisers describing it as one of the largest civilian-led maritime missions to Gaza. AP reported that more than 70 boats and over 1,000 activists were involved in the mission, with departures delayed by bad weather .

Israel’s foreign ministry said about 175 activists were detained after Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels. Flotilla organisers accused Israel of carrying out an unlawful seizure in international waters, while several governments criticised the operation. Turkey described the interception as “piracy,” and Italy demanded the release of its nationals.

At the Málaga rally, Sánchez also rejected calls for Spain to raise defence spending to five percent of GDP, a target backed by the United States and discussed within NATO.

“It would mean an extra €3,000 per citizen in Spain, €80 billion more per year,” Sánchez said. “That would mean raising taxes or cutting the welfare state.”

He added that his government would “always stand on the side of the welfare state.”

Sánchez has previously opposed NATO’s proposed five percent defence spending target, calling it unreasonable and incompatible with Spain’s welfare priorities. Spain later secured an agreement with NATO allowing it to avoid the five percent target while raising defence spending to 2.1 percent of GDP.

Footage from Thursday also shows robots with hyper-realistic silicone heads of the Democratic People ’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un, late artists Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, as well as Winkelmann himself.

According to the artist, the robot dogs are programmed to occasionally “poop out” printed images of their surroundings, captured through built-in cameras. These images are processed by artificial intelligence systems, which reinterpret the visuals based on the cultural, artistic, or ideological “style” linked to each figure.

RSF index reveals that press freedom gaps widened globally in 2025

Main Points

Press freedom remains sharply uneven worldwide in 2025, with Nordic countries maintaining their dominance at the top of global rankings, while dozens of nations continue to operate under constrained or reduced media conditions, according to the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The index, which scores countries on a scale from 0 to 100, shows Norway once again leading globally with a score of 93, followed closely by Estonia and the Netherlands at 89, and Sweden at 88. Finland, Denmark and Ireland also rank among the highest performers, each scoring 87, reinforcing Northern Europe’s longstanding position as a stronghold for independent journalism.

European countries dominate the upper tier of the index, with several nations, including Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, and Czechia, scoring in the mid-80s, indicating a broadly stable media environment. The United Kingdom and Canada sit slightly lower at 79, reflecting what RSF describes as “moderate but notable pressures” on press independence.

Despite Europe’s overall strength, the index highlights variations within the region. Countries such as Hungary (63) and Greece (55) fall into lower categories, underscoring concerns about political influence, media concentration and journalist safety.

A large group of countries falls into what RSF classifies as “moderate” or “constrained” press freedom. These include major economies such as the United States (65), Japan (63), and South Korea (64), where structural and political challenges continue to affect journalistic work.

In Africa, the picture is mixed. Ghana (67) and Namibia (75) perform relatively well, while others, such as Zambia (57) and Niger (57), face tighter constraints. Similarly, Latin American countries show divergence, with Uruguay (65) and Costa Rica (73) outperforming regional peers like Bolivia (54) and Ecuador (54).

Asia-Pacific nations also display a broad spectrum. Australia and New Zealand remain in the moderate category, while countries such as Papua New Guinea (58) and Malaysia (56) highlight ongoing struggles with regulatory and political pressures.

At the lower end of the index, countries including Benin, Bolivia, Ecuador and Tanzania all score 54, placing them in the “reduced press freedom” category. Serbia, Brunei, Eswatini, Kosovo and Angola follow closely with scores of 53.

These rankings point to systemic issues such as censorship, legal intimidation, limited access to information and threats to journalists’ safety, factors RSF identifies as key barriers to a free press.

He spoke from Yerevan on Saturday. Gspoyan was drafted into the war at the age of 18 and was first sent to Mozhaisk in the Moscow region. He later joined the 89th Taman Rifle Division, where he rose to become a reconnaissance platoon commander.

The 100-year-old showed his military awards and documents from his time in the Red Army. Serving under Soviet military leader Georgy Zhukov, Gspoyan carried out reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines to collect intelligence. During the Battle of Berlin, he sustained serious injuries from shell fragments to his back.

Doctors removed two fragments but left two near his spine due to the risk of damaging nerve endings. He marked Victory Day in the hospital.

After the war, Gspoyan remained in the military until 1951. His service earned him several honours, including the Order of the Patriotic War II degree, the Medal "For Bravery", and personal recognition from Joseph Stalin for his role in the Battle of Berlin.

Gspoyan is now the last living veteran of the 89th Taman Division. On May 9, 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory, Russian President Vladimir Putin personally congratulated Armenian veterans after the parade on Red Square.

Footage from the event shows crowds walking from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex. Participants carried a large Armenian flag and held lit torches and candles. Some individuals were also seen burning the Turkish flag during the procession.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reportedly condemned the flag-burning, describing it as “provocative and tension-inducing behaviour.”

April 24 has been declared by the European Parliament as the “Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armenian Massacres in the Ottoman Empire.”

The events of 1915–1916, which involved the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians, remain a subject of dispute. Turkey maintains that the events cannot be described as a “genocide” and estimates that around 300,000 people were killed. Armenian sources often place the death toll at about 1.5 million.

Nuclear leads EU power mix as renewables surge and fossil fuels decline

Nuclear energy remains the single largest source of electricity in the European Union. Still, rapid growth in wind and solar is reshaping the bloc’s energy mix, marking a decisive shift toward low-carbon power, according to recent industry and institutional data.

In 2025, nuclear accounted for roughly 23% of EU electricity generation , ahead of wind at about 18% and natural gas at around 17%, based on data compiled by energy analysts and platforms tracking Europe’s power system.

Combined, low-carbon sources, including nuclear, wind, solar and hydropower, now make up the majority of electricity generation across the EU.

This reflects a broader structural shift. According to Ember and European energy data, wind and solar together generated more electricity than fossil fuels in 2025 for the first time, a milestone widely seen as a turning point in Europe’s energy transition.

Solar alone contributed roughly 13% of electricity generation, while wind accounted for close to 17%, supported by sustained investment and policy backing across the bloc.

Despite the growth of renewables, fossil fuels still play a significant role.

Natural gas, coal and oil together accounted for roughly 27% of EU electricity generation, underlining the bloc’s continued reliance on dispatchable power sources to stabilise grids during periods of low renewable output.

Gas remains particularly important for its flexibility, though analysts warn that Europe’s electricity prices remain closely tied to gas markets, exposing the system to geopolitical volatility.

Coal, once a dominant source of European power, has continued its long-term decline, falling below 10% of the electricity mix in recent data.

Renewable energy has expanded rapidly in recent years.

According to Eurostat and industry reports, renewables accounted for around 47% of EU electricity generation in 2024, up sharply from previous years, driven largely by wind and solar expansion.

In 2025, that momentum continued, with record solar installations and strong wind output contributing to further gains.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) notes that renewables are now the fastest-growing sources of electricity globally, with solar leading growth and accounting for a significant share of new energy supply.

But a closer look at where leaders actually come from tells a different story. Across 20 countries spanning Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the West, a geographic mapping of the birthplaces of recent heads of state reveals that the assumption is not accurate.

Where are the leaders from?

Using data from the last ten heads of state (or equivalent leaders) in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa , India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, UK, France, Italy, USA, Japan, and Australia, Global South World categorised their birthplaces into three groups: biggest city, top three major cities; and outside the top three major cities.

Across the dataset, one pattern that stands out is that leaders are more likely to be born outside major urban centres than within them.

Countries such as Brazil, Nigeria, India, Tanzania, and the United States show strong decentralisation, with a majority of leaders originating from smaller cities, towns, or rural regions.

Which leaders are from outside major cities

Nigeria and India show particularly strong patterns, with most leaders born outside the major cities. In Brazil and Australia, leadership emerges from diverse regional bases rather than a single dominant city. The United States, often seen as a hub of elite politics, has presidents born across many different states, far from Washington, D.C.

This suggests that political legitimacy is often built at the grassroots level, with leaders rising through regional structures before entering national politics.

Which leaders are from capital cities

While decentralisation is common, some countries remain heavily capital-centric. Argentina shows a strong concentration around Buenos Aires, reflecting its highly centralised administrative and educational systems.

Mexico exhibits similar patterns, with Mexico City playing an outsized role in political leadership. In Thailand, Bangkok remains the dominant political and elite hub.

These systems often feature centralised bureaucracies, elite educational institutions clustered in capitals, and political networks that are difficult to access from outside

Federal systems contributing to geographic diversity

One of the clearest drivers of geographic diversity in leadership is the structure of the state itself. Federal or highly decentralised systems such as those in India, Brazil and the United States consistently produce leaders from a wide range of regions.

This is because political careers in these countries are often built locally, such as governors, regional leaders, and state officials rising through subnational systems. Also, national leadership becomes the culmination of regional influence, not just central access

Africa’s distinct pattern

African countries in the dataset, particularly Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa, stand out for their highly decentralised leadership origins.

This reflects several dynamics like the need for ethnic and regional balance, strong rural political mobilisation and historical scepticism toward capital-based elites

In many cases, being from outside the capital or a major city is not a disadvantage but a political asset.

Asia accounts for the largest share of the global economy, contributing more than a third of world output, according to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, underscoring the region’s central role in shaping global growth.

The IMF estimates Asia’s nominal GDP at about $42.2 trillion , representing roughly 36% of global economic output. This places it ahead of North America, which contributes around $35.5 trillion, or 30%, and Europe at $29.6 trillion, or 25%.

The region’s leading position reflects the combined weight of major economies such as China, Japan and India, alongside fast-growing Southeast Asian markets. Over the past two decades, Asia has steadily increased its share of global GDP, driven by industrialisation, trade expansion and rising domestic consumption.

IMF data shows that emerging Asian economies continue to outpace global growth averages, reinforcing the region’s long-term economic influence.

Despite Asia’s lead, North America remains a dominant economic force, anchored by the United States, the world’s largest single economy. The region’s 30% share highlights its continued importance in global finance, technology and consumption.

Europe, with a 25% shar e, maintains a significant but comparatively smaller role. Its economy is spread across multiple advanced nations, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, with growth shaped by both integration within the European Union and external trade.

Other regions account for much smaller portions of global output. South America contributes around $4.4 trillion, or 3.8%, while Africa’s total stands at approximately $3 trillion, or 2.6%.

Oceania, led by Australia and New Zealand , represents the smallest share among major regions, with about $2.1 trillion, or 1.8% of global GDP.

Near-final results from the National Election Office show that Orbán’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP alliance suffered a heavy loss in the 199-seat parliament, while opposition challenger Péter Magyar and his TISZA movement secured a commanding lead.

With 98.89% of the vote counted, TISZA won 138 seats, Fidesz-KDNP secured 55 seats, and Mi Hazánk obtained 6 seats.

The outcome marks a major political shift in Hungary, where Orbán had been one of Europe’s most controversial leaders. He was widely seen as the European Union’s most autocratic leader and maintained close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His removal is expected to ease tensions within the EU, where officials have long accused him of undermining democratic systems and taking advantage of institutional weaknesses.

Orbán also faced criticism over his stance on Ukraine. He was accused of supporting actions that helped block €90 billion in European support to Ukraine, raising concerns among European leaders about Hungary’s role in the bloc.

Despite endorsements from Trump and campaign support that included visits from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, the vote appeared to be driven mainly by domestic issues.

Voters were reported to be concerned about Hungary’s economic challenges, as well as allegations of corruption and cronyism linked to Orbán’s administration. The scale of the defeat indicated widespread dissatisfaction, as TISZA was projected to dominate both the national party-list vote and many individual constituencies.

In his speech to supporters, Magyar promised to return Hungary to the main fold of European politics , pledging a pro-European Union and pro-NATO direction for the country.

“My fellow citizens, Hungary will once again be a strong ally in the European Union and NATO. Hungary will once again be a strong ally representing Hungarian interests, because our country's place for a thousand years in Europe was, is, and will be. We will rebuild and strengthen, we will place it on new foundations and expand the cooperation of the Visegrad Four wherever possible,” he said.

The result sparked celebrations in Budapest, where tens of thousands of people took to the streets.

With a projected majority above the threshold required to govern alone, Magyar is expected to form the next government , ending Orbán’s long hold on power and signalling a shift in Hungary’s position within Europe.

20:50 GMT : Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in key parliamentary elections, marking a significant political shift after 16 years in power. Orban lost to his rival, conservative Peter Magyar, a former government insider and political newcomer who has promised “system change.” The election outcome signals a challenge to Orban’s long-standing leadership in the central European country. “The election results, though not yet final, are clear and understandable; for us, they are painful but unambiguous. We have not been entrusted with the responsibility and opportunity to govern. I congratulated the winning party,” Orban said.

19:51 GMT : After 16 years in power, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is on course to lose by a wide margin in Sunday’s vote.
14:42 GMT : Voters in Budapest expressed mixed views on Sunday as they queued outside polling stations for Hungary’s parliamentary elections, following a campaign marked by allegations of foreign interference.

"We have never encountered such a disgusting campaign before," one voter said.

13:52 GMT : Less than 4 hours to go before polls close, and the voter turnout data remains high. According to the National Election Office, more than 4.9 million, representing 66.01% of eligible voters, had already cast their vote at 15:00 (1300 GMT).

Opinion polls suggest that the Tisza party, led by pro-European conservative Peter Magyar, is performing ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party. Magyar, a former government insider, has pledged a “system change,” and analysts say the high turnout could work in his favour.

He stated that “today, there will be a change of system in Hungary.”

09:27 GMT : Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke to journalists at a polling centre as voters went to the polls in Budapest for the parliamentary elections, outlining his position on Hungary’s relationship with the European Union and responding to a question about Ukraine.

He responded to reports that officials in Brussels could challenge the outcome if he secured victory, stating, “To deny? No, they have to accept the intention and the will and express the opinion of the people.”

“We are members of the European Union, and this is the right which belongs to the member states,” he added. “We firmly stand on the basis of the national rights and sovereignty.”

When asked whether he would consider ceding territory to Russia in a hypothetical peace deal if he were leading Ukraine, Orban replied, “I'm lucky enough not to be Zelensky.”

08:37 GMT : Orban cast his ballot on Sunday as he faces his most significant electoral challenge in more than ten years. Footage showed Orban arriving in a van alongside his wife, Anikó Lévai, entering a polling station surrounded by journalists, voting, and then leaving the premises.

06:18 GMT : As at 07:00 local time, the voter turnout recorded was 3.46%, representing 260,556 of registered voters, according to the National Election Office.

06:02 GMT : US Vice President JD Vance accused the EU of interfering in Hungary’s elections, describing it as one of the most serious cases he has seen. Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Orban in Budapest on Tuesday, Vance said the EU had taken actions that negatively affected Hungary.

05:43 GMT : During a final campaign address in Budapest, Orban described the country’s election as a defining moment for national sovereignty, warning of foreign interference and outlining his government’s position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He said Hungary would not support Ukraine with resources or military assistance. “We will not give our children to Ukraine, we will not give our money, and we will not give our weapons,” he said. “Hungary will remain an island of peace and will continue to be the safest country in Europe after the elections.”

05:06 GMT : In the lead-up to the polls, the ruling Fidesz party saturated Hungarian streets with posters that frame the upcoming election as an existential choice between "war or peace" by depicting foreign leaders and the domestic opposition as menacing threats. Prominent billboards feature "harshly lit" and unflattering portraits of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, portraying them as the faces of a "pro-war lobby" in Brussels intent on dragging Hungary into the conflict. At the same time, opposition leader Magyar is branded as an “agent of Brussels”.

04:53 GMT : Magyar, 45, is not a typical opposition figure. He comes from Orbán’s inner circle and broke away after a corruption and pardon scandal. Since then, his Tisza Party has gained momentum. His focus is different. He talks about the economy, corruption, and the rule of law, what he calls everyday issues. He has also promised to unlock between €18 billion and €22.5 billion in frozen EU funds by restoring Hungary’s alignment with European standards. Unlike past challengers, Magyar connects with voters in rural areas through retail politics, and his right-leaning background makes him harder to dismiss. Read more

04:43 GMT : Ahead of Sunday's election, Prime Minister Orbán urged voters to back his ruling Fidesz party, warning that Hungary could lose key achievements on migration, energy protection and its confrontational stance toward Brussels if the opposition prevails.

04:29 GMT : Why Hungary's election could change more than just its government

Hungary heads to the polls in what many are calling its most important election since the end of communism in 1989.

For the first time in 16 years, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is facing a serious challenge not from the usual opposition but from someone who once stood beside him.

That challenger is Péter Magyar, a former Fidesz insider who now leads the Tisza (Respect and Freedom) Party. What looks like a domestic political contest is also being watched closely far beyond Hungary, with implications for the EU, the US, Russia, and Ukraine.

Orbán’s campaign has focused heavily on the idea of “war or peace.” He has positioned himself as Hungary’s protector, warning that “progressive forces” in the West and Ukraine are trying to pull the country into conflict. Read more

04:00 GMT : Polls open in Hungary

Polling stations open at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT) and close at 7 p.m. (1700 GMT), with results expected later in the evening. According to the National Election Office, there are over 8.1 million eligible voters.

What to know about the election and possible outcomes

The election is being hailed as the most pivotal moment for the country since the collapse of communism in 1989. Opinion polls suggest that Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his nationalist Fidesz party could lose power after 16 years to the centre-right, pro-European Union Tisza party, led by former Orban loyalist Peter Magyar.

The Key Players

How the voting works

Exactly 8,114,688 registered voters will elect 199 members of parliament. Of these, 106 are chosen in single-member constituencies under a first-past-the-post system, while 93 are selected from national party and ethnic minority lists.

Since 2010, Orbán has rewritten election laws, including gerrymandering districts and making it easier for Hungarians living abroad to vote. Ethnic Hungarians living abroad have the right to citizenship and can vote on party lists by letter. According to National Election Office data, close to 500,000 such citizens have registered for the 2026 election, and most have traditionally supported Fidesz.

The Tisza Party may need to lead Fidesz by at least six percentage points nationally just to secure a simple majority. Voters with a registered Hungarian address must vote in person, either at polling stations in Hungary or at official representations abroad.

Parties must secure at least 5% of the vote to enter parliament.

What happens after the election

President Tamas Sulyok will convene the new parliament within 30 days of the election, likely in May.

Parliament elects the prime minister by a simple majority vote. The president proposes a candidate, usually from the winning party, and parliament votes on the nomination.

If the proposed candidate is not elected, the president must submit a new proposal within 15 days. If parliament fails again to elect a prime minister, the president can dissolve parliament and call a new election.

Core campaign issues

International and geopolitical stakes

Potential scenarios

In a message released on Friday, Orbán said his government had built a border fence, curbed irregular migration and shielded families from soaring utility costs, presenting Fidesz as the “safe choice” in a high-stakes vote.

Orbán accused the opposition Tisza party of threatening stability and suggested a change of government could pull Hungary closer to Brussels and deeper into external conflicts. The election has increasingly been framed by Orbán as a choice between “peace and war,” with his campaign focusing heavily on immigration, the war in Ukraine and Hungary’s fraught relationship with the European Union .

The vote on April 12 is shaping up to be Orbán’s toughest contest in years. Opposition leader Péter Magyar and his Tisza party have gained momentum by casting the election as a referendum on Hungary’s place in Europe and on Orbán’s 16 years in power, during which critics say democratic standards have eroded and ties with Brussels have deteriorated.

Recent polling has painted a mixed picture, though several independent surveys have shown Tisza ahead among likely voters, while Orbán has retained strong backing in rural areas and among older Hungarians.
