From sudden flash floods to slow-onset famines, this year revealed how climate-driven disasters are becoming more frequent, more intense and harder to recover from. Governments and aid agencies were repeatedly forced into emergency mode, while long-term resilience remained out of reach for many of the most exposed regions.

Philippines — Super typhoons and flooding | Southeast Asia

In 2025, the Philippines endured another punishing typhoon season as warmer ocean waters intensified storms across the western Pacific. Several super typhoons made landfall within months, unleashing torrential rains, storm surges and widespread flooding. Coastal and low-lying communities were repeatedly displaced, while damage to crops, homes and transport networks accumulated with each successive storm. Authorities warned that recovery time between disasters is shrinking, leaving millions more exposed. Climate scientists continue to link the growing intensity of typhoons to rising sea surface temperatures driven by global warming.

Mexico — Floods and landslides | Latin America

Severe flooding and landslides struck parts of Mexico in late 2025 after days of relentless rainfall overwhelmed rivers and hillsides. Entire neighbourhoods were submerged as infrastructure collapsed, particularly in regions already affected by deforestation and rapid urban expansion. Emergency services struggled to reach isolated communities as roads and bridges were washed away. The disaster once again highlighted how climate change is amplifying rainfall extremes across Latin America. For many vulnerable communities, the impacts were worsened by long-standing social and economic inequalities.

Nigeria — Flash floods | West Africa

In late May, torrential rains along the Kaduna River triggered devastating flash floods in Nigeria’s Niger State. Villages around Mokwa and Minna were inundated within minutes, killing at least 151 people and displacing thousands more. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, while farmland and transport links were severely damaged. Beyond the immediate death toll, the floods wiped out crops during a critical agricultural period, threatening local food supplies. Relief agencies described the disaster as one of the worst flooding events Nigeria has seen in decades.

Nepal — Glacial lake outburst flood | South Asia

A sudden glacial lake outburst on the Nepal–China border in July sent a wall of water down the Bhote Koshi river, devastating border communities. The flood destroyed major bridges and hydropower facilities, killing dozens and leaving others missing on both sides of the frontier. Nearly eight per cent of Nepal’s electricity generation capacity was knocked offline overnight. Scientists pointed to accelerating glacial melt in the Himalayas as a key driver of the disaster. The event underscored the growing risks climate change poses to high-mountain regions.

India — Monsoon floods and landslides | South Asia

India’s northeastern states faced deadly floods and landslides in June as unusually intense monsoon rains overwhelmed rivers and unstable terrain. Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya were among the worst affected, with dozens killed and thousands forced into shelters. Entire districts were cut off as roads collapsed and communication lines failed. While monsoons are a seasonal reality, experts warned that climate change is making rainfall more erratic and destructive. The disaster exposed the fragile infrastructure of one of India’s most climate-vulnerable regions.

South Africa — Unseasonal flooding | Southern Africa

In May, heavy rainfall from an unseasonal cold-front system triggered deadly flooding in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Rivers burst their banks, sweeping away homes, schools and vehicles. At least 49 people were killed, including schoolchildren whose bus was caught in floodwaters near Mthatha. Authorities declared a national disaster as emergency crews struggled to reach submerged communities. Climate specialists noted that shifting weather patterns are making extreme rainfall events more frequent, even outside traditional wet seasons.

Brazil — Wildfires in the Amazon | South America

The Amazon basin experienced a surge in wildfires during 2025 as prolonged drought and record temperatures dried out vast stretches of rainforest. Fires spread rapidly across Brazil ’s northern states, destroying ecosystems, displacing Indigenous communities and releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Smoke from the blazes darkened skies hundreds of kilometres away, triggering health warnings in major cities. Scientists warned that climate change, combined with deforestation, is pushing the rainforest closer to a tipping point. The fires reinforced fears that the Amazon is losing its ability to act as a global carbon sink.

Argentina and Chile — Drought-driven fires | South America

Across the Southern Cone, extended drought conditions fuelled one of the most severe wildfire seasons in recent years. In Argentina and Chile, parched grasslands and forests ignited easily, allowing fires to spread across millions of hectares. Rural communities were forced to evacuate as livestock, crops and infrastructure were destroyed. Air pollution from the fires also affected urban centres, compounding public health risks. Climate change has lengthened fire seasons in the region, leaving authorities struggling to keep pace.

Horn of Africa — Drought and hunger | East Africa

In the Horn of Africa, prolonged drought conditions continued to drive severe food insecurity throughout 2025. Successive failed rainy seasons in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya devastated harvests and livestock, eroding livelihoods across rural areas. Millions faced crisis-level hunger as water sources dried up and food prices surged. While not always officially declared as a famine, humanitarian agencies warned that conditions resembled past hunger emergencies. Climate change has intensified drought cycles in the region, magnifying the risks for already vulnerable populations.

Southern Africa — Crop failures and food stress | Southern Africa

Large parts of Southern Africa entered 2025 grappling with the aftershocks of drought and extreme heat that reduced crop yields and strained water supplies. Countries such as Zambia and Malawi reported poor maize harvests, pushing more households towards food assistance. Climate-driven heat stress disrupted planting cycles and reduced agricultural productivity. As rural incomes fell, food insecurity deepened across the region. The crisis illustrated how climate change can quietly undermine food systems long before famine is officially declared.

The blaze broke out at around 8:27 p.m. on September 13, starting in Buildings 7 and 8 along Road 10, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). The fire quickly spread through the neighbourhood, where most homes were made of light materials.

At least 28 fire trucks were deployed as the fire reached Task Force Bravo at 10:53 p.m. The blaze was declared under control at 2:46 a.m. Sunday and was fully extinguished by 6:01 a.m., authorities said.

No fatalities were reported, but three people were injured in the incident. Damage to property was initially pegged at around P1.5 million ($26,000).

“It’s painful for me to lose our house, and we haven’t saved any of our things because the fire spread quickly, but we are thankful my family is safe,” said Josefa Gidayawan, a resident who lost her home.

A firefighter at the scene said the flames were intensified by the presence of junk shops in the area, causing the fire to spread rapidly.

“It makes me really tearful because I know how much everybody is suffering. This is our fifth fire in less than two years, so nearly everyone in this community has been burned, and now I feel so emotional,” said Jane Walker, CEO of the Upskills+ Foundation.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. City officials have since started distributing aid to the thousands of affected families as relief operations continue in the gutted neighbourhood.

The coastal city of Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv, was among the hardest hit—six people died and nearly 180 were injured when a residential building collapsed under the force of the blasts. Rescuers continued to search through the debris for at least seven people believed to be trapped.

In northern Israel, four women were killed late Saturday, June 14, when a missile brought down a three-storey home in Tamra, raising the total Israeli death toll to 13 since the conflict reignited on Friday , June 13.

Meanwhile, Israel responded with a massive aerial offensive, targeting what it described as key military and nuclear sites inside Iran. Among the sites hit were fuel depots near Tehran, the defence ministry headquarters, and facilities linked to the Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND).

A large fire was seen at a depot in Shahran, while explosions echoed across Iran’s capital in the early hours of Sunday.

The Iranian government confirmed that 78 people had died and over 320 were wounded during the initial wave of Israeli strikes. While no updated figures were provided on Sunday, Tehran claimed the attacks had killed high-ranking officials, including top military commanders and nuclear scientists. Among them were General Mohammad Bagheri and Revolutionary Guard leader Hossein Salami.

Tensions soared further as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of breaching international law by attacking nuclear facilities and claimed Tehran had “conclusive evidence” of U.S. involvement. Washington, however, distanced itself from the hostilities.

President Donald Trump stated the U.S. had “nothing to do” with Israel’s bombing campaign but warned Iran of severe consequences if U.S. interests were harmed.

As fuel shortages loomed, Iranians queued at gas stations across the country, fearing broader economic fallout. The Iranian oil ministry confirmed Israeli strikes on two fuel storage sites.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed continued retaliation, pledging to strike “every pillar of the ayatollah regime.” In turn, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned of an even more forceful counterattack should Israeli aggression persist.

Amid international appeals for restraint, Israeli forces urged Iranian civilians to evacuate areas near suspected weapons facilities. The conflict, rooted in decades of hostility and proxy warfare, has now entered a volatile new phase, raising fears of a regional war that could engulf the broader Middle East.

Samuel Amoah, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, described the situation as “heartbreaking” while speaking to local media outlets .

According to him, the fire may not have been an accident but a planned attack.

While investigations have been launched, outgoing and incoming governments have been urged to help rebuild the market.

Many traders have lost both their homes and livelihoods as a result of the fire and have since begun clearing the debris and rebuilding stalls.

Former Vice president dies

Former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko of Zimbabwe has died at the age of 84 while undergoing treatment in India for an undisclosed illness. Zim Live reports that his death was confirmed by presidential spokesperson George Charamba. Mphoko served as vice president from 2014 to 2017 and held various diplomatic positions since 1987. He was a former ZPRA commander and played a role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle. Colleagues remembered him as a selfless national hero and a compassionate leader committed to promoting peace and reconciliation in the country.

Power outage

Zimbabwe's Parliament experienced a power outage during the budget discussion, causing outrage among opposition members. According to the First Post , the Finance Minister was concluding his speech when the lights went out, highlighting ongoing issues with power shortages due to low water levels at the Kariba Dam. Citizens face limited electricity access, averaging only seven hours per day. The country is exploring alternative power sources alongside Zambia to alleviate these outages.

Trade deficit

Zimbabwe's trade deficit narrowed to US$137.7 million in October 2024, a 34.3% decrease from US$209.5 million in September. This improvement results from a 21.4% rise in exports, reaching US$698.1 million, while imports increased by 6.6% to US$835.8 million. Key exports included semi-manufactured gold (42.4%), tobacco (17.5%), and nickel mattes (12.2%), while mineral fuels (21%) were the largest import category, Bulawayo24 reports. This trend highlights Zimbabwe's efforts to enhance the visibility of local products in global markets, supported by initiatives from President Mnangagwa and ZimTrade's export promotion campaigns, which aim to diversify export portfolios and strengthen economic growth through improved external trade.

Fire outbreak

A mysterious fire destroyed 12 huts belonging to the Chimbudzi family in Mwenezi District's Chimbudzi Village, leaving them homeless and without crucial supplies during the rainy season. The fire began unexpectedly in the kitchen of Judith Chimbudzi's homestead, engulfing two huts before returning five days later to finish the last remaining structure. The Zimbabwe Mail reports that villagers feared the fire could continue and declined to offer shelter. The disaster affected multiple family members across five homesteads, resulting in the loss of clothing and school uniforms. Mike Chimbudzi described the panic and community bewilderment over the unexplained incidents, while Chief Mawarire reported that they are seeking assistance from local authorities. The family has only received minimal aid so far.

Seizure of illicit goods

A joint operation targeting smuggling and unethical business practices resulted in the impounding of numerous vehicles, including buses and trucks, along with the seizure of illicit goods like foodstuffs and second-hand clothes. Spearheaded by a Cabinet-established task force led by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the crackdown aims to protect local industries and consumer welfare amidst a surge of smuggled goods affecting the economy. Multiple agencies, including the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) and law enforcement, are conducting inspections at roadblocks and retail outlets to ensure compliance with regulations, The Zimbabwe Mail has said. The initiative will intensify during the festive season when smuggling often peaks, particularly with returning expatriates bringing goods that evade customs. Officials emphasize that business malpractices, including currency manipulation and selling counterfeit goods, threaten local manufacturers and employment. The government warns that non-compliance may lead to fines and seizure of goods, stating the urgent need to restore order in the market and curb smuggling's detrimental impact on public health and local production.

The victims were returning from a school trip when their bus blew a tire, crashed into a highway barrier just north of Bangkok, and caught fire.

Families gathered at the school in Uthai Thani province, where the children studied. As a marching band played in the rain, royal palace staff carried the coffins on traditional funerary carriages, while parents dressed in black placed portraits and toys beside them.

“I hoped it wasn't my son,” said Wichan Suebsaichan, father of nine-year-old Reutthawat, who dreamed of being a football player.

“Now the house just seems too quiet. I can't handle it. May he rest in peace," Bantima Tuadchampa, who lost her six-year-old grandson was quoted by AFP.

Monks chanted as the 23 caskets were placed in individual cremation furnaces, ending a week of ceremonies. About 5,000 people attended the mass cremation, including community members and government officials.

In the wake of the tragedy, Thai police arrested the bus driver, Samarn Chanput, 48, who faces charges including reckless driving causing death. The incident has raised public concern about vehicle safety, prompting the transport ministry to recall over 13,000 gas-fueled buses for checks.

Families, dressed in black gathered to console each other and lay flowers, toys, and food offerings on the coffins of the children, along with three teachers who also died in the tragedy.

The fire broke out after the bus, which was carrying 39 students and six teachers, crashed on a highway north of Bangkok on Tuesday. Investigators believe a burst tyre caused the vehicle to hit a barrier, sparking a fire that spread too quickly for many passengers to escape.

Police have arrested the driver on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and authorities are investigating whether the bus's compressed gas tanks played a role in the fire. The government has ordered checks on more than 13,000 gas-fueled buses, as some relatives call for a ban on their use, AFP reports.

The formal funeral prayers began on October 3 and will continue until a mass cremation scheduled for October 8, with King Maha Vajiralongkorn represented by the head of Thailand's Privy Council.

Wildfires

Fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest surged in September 2023, reaching the highest number of hotspots for that month since 2010, with 41,463 detected. This increase is attributed to prolonged drought conditions linked to climate change. The first nine months of 2023 saw the worst fire activity since 2007. In the state of Para, which recorded its highest number of hotspots since 2007, smoke covered vast areas, and low water levels in the Amazon basin were evident. Fires, typically set for land clearance, are exploited by criminals aiming to profit from the land. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the fires as criminal, while federal police are intensifying efforts against environmental crimes. Channelnewsasia reports that fires in the Amazon typically peak in August and September, correlating with the region's dry season.

Repatriation from Lebanon

Brazil's Foreign Affairs Ministry has announced plans to repatriate Brazilian nationals from Lebanon following Israeli airstrikes in Beirut. Coordination will take place with the Defense Ministry and the Brazilian embassy, with a repatriation date to be determined based on safety conditions, according to the Brazilian Report . The urgency of the operation has increased as Israeli ground operations began in southern Lebanon. Approximately 22,000 Brazilians reside in Lebanon and Israel, highlighting the importance of this action.

Sports betting

A recent study by DataSenado reveals that over 22 million Brazilians (13% of adults aged 16+) placed sports bets in the past 30 days. The majority of bettors (56%) are aged 16 to 29. The findings highlight a male-dominated demographic, with 62% identifying as male and 38% as female. Betters also tend to be educated, with 40% having completed secondary education, and 68% employed. Sports betting regulations will take effect in Brazil on January 1 next year, prompting discussions on advertising policies.

Emergency plane landing

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's plane experienced a technical issue, forcing it to circle Mexico City for hours before landing safely after his official visit for President Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration. The aircraft, a 20-year-old Airbus A319, burned off fuel to make a safe landing. TBS News reports that Lula was expected to change planes in Mexico City before returning to Brasilia.

Unblocking of X in Brazil

A Brazilian judge has ordered the unblocking of Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) bank accounts, allowing the platform to settle over $5 million in fines and possibly resume operations in Brazil after being suspended since August 31 due to a dispute over disinformation. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had previously shut down X after Musk failed to comply with court orders, including the removal of certain accounts and appointing a legal representative. X has begun to meet the court's conditions in hopes of reinstatement, while Musk has publicly criticized de Moraes, local reports say. Before the ban, X had over 22 million users in Brazil.

Reports of child labour

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Labor reveals troubling connections between child labour and the mining of zinc in Bolivia, which is used in the production of indium in South Korea. The report meticulously documents hazardous working conditions for children in mines, particularly in the regions of Potosi and Oruro. The Korea Times reports that in 2022 alone, South Korea imported more than $385 million worth of zinc concentrate from Bolivia, significantly impacting the supply chain of indium. Notably, South Korea is a major global player in indium production, contributing to 22.2% of the world's supply. The findings of this report raise critical alarms regarding the presence of child labour across various products derived from zinc and indium, especially in the electronics and solar panel industries.

National emergency due to fires

Bolivia faces a national emergency due to unprecedented forest fires, as declared by Defence Minister Edmundo Novillo. The intense fires have already consumed over three million hectares, marking the worst wildfire season since 2010, intensified by earlier fire outbreaks linked to drought conditions. According to The Star , Bolivia's firefighting capabilities are under strain, prompting indigenous volunteers to step in to protect their lands amid widespread evacuations. The situation is further complicated as Brazil witnesses similar disastrous wildfires, exacerbated by record-breaking drought conditions in the Amazon rainforest.

Bilateral ties with Egypt

To fortify bilateral relations, Egypt and Bolivia are actively pursuing collaboration in tourism and cultural initiatives. Egyptian Foreign Minister Nashar has articulated a vision to enhance tourism and invest in site infrastructure, while Bolivia’s representatives laud Egypt’s development efforts. Egypt Today reports mutual discussions encompass joint tourism campaigns and agreements focused on safeguarding cultural heritage, curbing illegal artefact trafficking, and improving archaeological cooperation. Plans are in motion to exhibit replicas of Egyptian artefacts in Bolivia to promote Egyptian culture within the region.

Heavy rains call for a state of emergency

Catastrophic heavy rains in La Paz have necessitated a state of emergency declaration by local authorities, following severe flooding that has obliterated numerous homes. President Luis Arce has announced the mobilisation of heavy machinery and the deployment of 3,000 troops to alleviate subsequent damages. As reported by Nasdaq , the flooding has critically disrupted vital services across several districts, resulting in one fatality over the weekend, and contributing to an alarming total of nearly 50 deaths throughout the country since the onset of the rainy season in January.

Inflation soars

Bolivia's inflation rate escalated to 5.19% in August, reaching the highest point in nearly a decade with a noteworthy monthly surge of 1.58%. This increase significantly surpasses the central bank’s annual target of 3.6%. Cumulative inflation figures for the first eight months of 2023 stand at 4.61%, markedly higher than the mere 0.39% recorded in August of the previous year. According to Investing.com , the price increase trend is predominantly observed in essential commodities such as rice, chicken, and tomatoes, while sectors such as education and transport have reported price declines. Simultaneously, Bolivia grapples with the dual challenges of rampant wildfires and fuel shortages, following a 2022 annual inflation rate of 2.12%.

Action against corrupt construction mafias

The South African Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is initiating thorough investigations into a staggering number of leases, alongside a significant R300 million (about $17 million) IT security breach. All Africa reports Minister Dean Macpherson is prioritising the lawful execution of leases and adherence to market-related pricing in a bid to combat corruption within the sector, targeting construction mafias through legal action, including a lawsuit against Kroucamp Plumbers over unlawful tenders.

Eastern Cape Game Reserve fires

Recently, intense wildfires wreaked havoc in the Lawrence de Lange Game Reserve, devastating more than half of its grazing land. Fortunately, the fire was contained without any reported injuries to wildlife. According to News24 , local municipalities, however, felt the brunt of the disaster, exacerbated by prevailing dry weather conditions and powerful winds, highlighting the vulnerability of the region’s ecosystems.

Durban drug busts

In a major crackdown on drug-related crimes, two suspects were apprehended in Durban with a substantial cache of illegal drugs, valued at over R3 million (over $170,000). One individual was found in possession of 900 heroin capsules, prompting further investigations that led to additional drug seizures at other locations. As reported by News24 , one individual also faced charges related to illegal residency, showcasing the multifaceted nature of crime in the area.

Battle for Africa's richest title

In notable financial news, South Africa's Johann Rupert has surpassed Nigeria's Aliko Dangote to become Africa's richest man, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Africa.com highlights that Rupert's net worth surged by $1.9 billion to reach $14.3 billion, while Dangote experienced a decline of $1.7 billion to a net worth of $13.4 billion, as a result of Nigeria's current economic challenges. Despite maintaining the title of Africa's richest according to Forbes for an impressive 13 consecutive years, Dangote now finds himself in second position on Bloomberg's list, with other prominent billionaires such as Nicky Oppenheimer, Nassef Sawiris, and Natie Kirsh ranking third, fourth, and fifth respectively.

Corruption allegations aimed at Justice Minister

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has formally requested Justice Minister Thembi Simelane to address escalating corruption allegations relating to her involvement in a $130 million banking scandal with VBS Mutual Bank. Under scrutiny, Simelane is alleged to have received an illegal loan exceeding 500,000 rands during her tenure as mayor of Polokwane. As calls for her resignation intensify, opposition parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), are questioning her integrity and leadership abilities. According to News Central , appointed only in June, Simelane’s credibility faces significant challenges given the history of corruption associated with several high-ranking ANC officials and the VBS scandal's detrimental impact on impoverished rural depositors.

Construction Week reports that planned expansions feature a 400-room hotel and a mosque. Infrastructure improvements include the completion of Nasiriyah International Airport and enhanced electricity supply, with over 2,400 MW of power projects underway. Al-Sudani's recent visit is part of ongoing efforts to improve local development and reconstruction in the region.

Fire outbreak

A fire at the Parvez Khan border crossing between Iraq and Iran killed one person and injured 17, including 12 civilians and four security and health personnel. The fire, which broke out on Monday evening, destroyed 15 trucks and involved several oil tankers. According to Rudaw , the injured were treated at Shahid Hazhar Emergency Hospital and are in stable condition. This crossing is a vital route for oil exports to Iran and other goods entering the region.

Foreign travels

Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected president of Iran, will make Iraq his first foreign destination, emphasising the importance of Iran-Iraq relations, Tehran Times reports. His visit, in response to an invitation from Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, is scheduled before his attendance at the United Nations meetings in New York. The trip follows a recent press conference in Baghdad where Iran's former foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, called for an end to violence in Gaza and highlighted the shared commitment of Iran and Iraq to support the Palestinian population amid regional tensions.

Automotive market

Toyota led the Iraqi automotive market in the first half of 2024, with sales reaching 19,629 units. Car sales overall increased by 26.4% compared to the same period in 2023, totalling 69,072 vehicles sold. June marked the eighteenth consecutive month of rising sales, with 11,022 cars registered that month. According to Iraqi News , Kia followed Toyota with 17,986 sales, and Hyundai ranked third with 7,980 units sold. The Iraqi market, which faced declines between 2014 and 2016 due to the ISIS conflict, has seen significant growth since 2017, with 2022 showing a 26.7% rise in annual sales to 107,990 vehicles.

Fire in Southern Mexico

Mexico entered peak fire season in March 2024 with over 100 active blazes, fueled by dry and warm conditions. A total of 120 fires affected more than 7,000 hectares across 19 states. According to NASA Earth Observatory , the fire season is expected to continue through May, with increased fire activity and potential in all Mexican mountain ranges.

Mexican Cartel

Mexican cartel CJNG is targeting unsuspecting tourists in a timeshare scam, defrauding victims of millions of dollars. The U.S. government has warned timeshare owners and sanctioned companies tied to the cartel. The scam involves call centres posing as legitimate sales representatives and demanding upfront fees before disappearing with victims' money. CJNG uses extreme violence and intimidation to control the timeshare network, often targeting older U.S. citizens, reports media agency The Week . The cartel's operation has been linked to multiple deaths, and the U.S. government is working to stop the scam.

Mayoral candidate shot to death

Candidate for mayor of a violent city in Mexico, Bertha Gaytán, was shot to death as she began campaigning. This is the latest killing in the run-up to Mexico's June 2 elections, with at least 14 candidates killed so far. Guanajuato, where the killing occurred, has the highest number of homicides in Mexico and is known for violent turf battles between drug cartels, according to reports from ABC News . This violence against politicians is widespread in Mexico.

Crude oil exports

Mexico's Pemex will halt some crude oil exports, cutting supply in the global market and driving up oil prices. The move comes as the country aims to increase domestic fuel production and revamp its refining sector. The export cut primarily affects its flagship Maya crude, with US refiners likely to be impacted the most, reports media agency The Star. The halt is expected to support prices of medium-sour Mars Blend produced in the Gulf of Mexico.

Maya Train accident

The Mexican government blames a contractor for a loose clamp causing a Maya Train derailment. Critics see the $20 billion railway project as wasteful and damaging to the environment, which prompted President López Obrador to finish it by Sept. 30. The railway switch involved in the accident is supposed to be automated, but manual operations were being used prematurely. The project has caused damage to sensitive limestone caves, despite promises to preserve them, CTV news reported. The Defense Secretary mentioned that the companies involved are analysing the damage.

400 trucks ready to curb fuel crisis

Efforts of solidarity are intensifying to address the fuel crisis stemming from the recent fire at Guinea's primary oil depot. Hydrocarbon carriers, playing a crucial role in the supply chain, have mobilized at least 400 trucks, prepared for immediate deployment to help curb the fuel crisis in the country. “We, in the hydrocarbon transport sector, have gathered all our logistics to make it available to the State. Fortunately, the friendly countries have extended us a hand of fraternity to help us so that this crisis does not have enough negative impacts on the functioning of our country. That's why we put vehicles. SONAP, too, is making all the arrangements. Had it not been for this incident, there would not have been all this problem. Because the government, through the Sonap, has imported enough fuel,” Elhadj Nana Télico, the leader of the employers' section for oil tankers, told African Guinee .

Conakry's fire: Government creates six technical commissions

In response to the fire at Conakry's largest fuel depot, the Guinean government has created six technical commissions to effectively manage the crisis. These commissions include the Health, Safety, and Environment Committee; the Victim Support Committee; the Energy, Transport, and Logistics Committee; the Communication and Awareness Committee; the Evaluation and Compensation Committee; and the Economy, Finance, and Partner Relations Committee. Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Bachir Diallo, announced this development on Saturday, December 23, 2023, in a decree , Guinee Matin reports. Each commission is tasked with specific missions and responsibilities, and their operational budgets are sourced from the crisis management budget designated for the aftermath of the Kaloum hydrocarbon depot fire.

National team squad for Africa Cup of Nations

Guinea's national coach, Kaba Diawara, has unveiled the 25-man squad that will represent the country in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The team comprises three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, and six attackers, Guineelive reports. The full list includes; Goalkeepers: Aly Keita, Moussa Camara, Ibrahim Koné; Defenders: Antoine Conté, Ibrahima Diakité, Issiagha Sylla, Sékou Oumar Sylla, Mouctar Diakhaby, Julien Janvier, Saidou Sow, Mohamed Aly Camara; Midfielders: Amadou Diawara, Seydouba Cissé, Aguibou Camara, Naby Keita, Aboudoulaye Touré, Mory Konaté, Moriba Kourouma, Karim Cissé; Attackers: Guilavogui Morgan, Serhou Guirassy, François Kamano, Mohamed Bayo, Facinet Conté, José Martinez Kanté. From the list, Fascinet Conté who currently plays for Bastia in the French League 2 is the only new addition to the team.

Conakry fire finally extinguished

The civil protection services, assisted by teams from Senegal, France, Ivory Coast, and other substitutes, successfully extinguished the catastrophic fire that ravaged Guinea's primary hydrocarbon depot on the night of December 17 to 18, 2023, after six days of battle, Africa Guinee reports. "The coordination was exceptional. The operation was well coordinated under the leadership of General Bachir Diallo. Huge efforts have been made. There have been many difficulties but the objective has been achieved, it is the main thing. We have an effective fire service because even before the arrival of foreign support, we had been able to organize ourselves and circumscribe the fire" Director General of Civil Protection, Colonel Mohamed Camara said. He added "When we are in extinguishing operations, we use emulsifiers prepared from chemicals. They are mixed with water to make the foaming solution to extinguish this fire. This solution was up on three firefighters, they were slightly affected. Apart from these cases, we have caused zero victims," says the Director General of Civil Protection.

ECOWAS sympathizes with Guinea

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed sympathy with Guinea following the December 17th explosion at the country's major fuel depot. In an official statement, the sub-regional institution conveyed its condolences to the families of the victims and extended sympathy to the Government and People of Guinea, ActuGuinee reports. The leadership of the organisation has further member states and the international community to provide support to Guinea during these challenging times.
