Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the Lebanese group would confront what he called the “aggression” by Washington and Israel. “We will undertake our duty of confronting the aggression,” Qassem said, adding that Hezbollah would not leave “the field of honour and resistance.”

In Gaza, Hamas announced it was mourning Khamenei, calling him a key backer of the Palestinian militant group. “We in Hamas mourn the passing of Ali Khamenei,” it said, adding that he provided “political, diplomatic and military support” to its cause.

Hamas also condemned the US-Israeli attack on Iran as a “heinous” act with serious consequences for the region.

Khamenei’s death has deepened uncertainty over Iran’s next steps and leadership succession, as countries and international bodies urged restraint amid ongoing military exchanges across the Middle East.

Speaking in an interview , Mardawi said Hamas had received no such information from mediators after comments by Israeli Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs suggesting a deadline could begin with a planned “Board of Peace” conference backed by Donald Trump.

Israel has said reconstruction of the Gaza Strip cannot proceed until Hamas disarms. A senior aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Fuchs said the proposed two-month period was requested by the United States administration.

“We will evaluate it,” Fuchs said, adding that if the plan fails, the Israel Defence Forces would “complete the mission.”

Mardawi warned that any renewed military action would have “serious repercussions for the region,” saying Palestinians would not surrender their weapons while Israel maintains its military presence.

Talks over a second phase of a ceasefire began in mid-January, with Washington seeking progress on Hamas disarmament and the possible deployment of an international peacekeeping force. Hamas leaders, including Khaled Meshaal, have rejected calls to disarm while the conflict continues.

Health authorities in Gaza say tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed since fighting escalated in October 2023, though the figures cannot be independently verified. Israel says it targets Hamas militants and blames the group for operating in civilian areas.

Negotiations mediated by regional partners are ongoing, with both sides accusing each other of violating ceasefire terms as humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain dire.

At a joint press conference in Ankara, Merz defended Israel ’s actions, asserting that Hamas bore responsibility for the casualties.

“Israel has exercised its right to self-defence and it would have required only a single decision to also avoid the countless unnecessary victims. Hamas should have released the hostages earlier and laid down their arms… Then this war would have ended immediately,” Merz said.

Referring to civilian suffering, Merz added that “the children in Gaza , whose fate has personally affected me deeply, are victims of a situation created by the terrorist organisation Hamas.”

Erdogan sharply rejected the German leader’s assessment.“ Unfortunately, I cannot agree with one remark of the Chancellor,” he said, noting that “more than 60,000 children , women and elderly people have been killed.”

“Hamas does not have bombs. Hamas does not possess nuclear weapons. But all those weapons are in Israel’s hands,” Erdogan continued, accusing Israel of using heavy weaponry in recent strikes.

The Turkish president also criticised Germany’s stance.“Are you not seeing these things as Germany? Are you not following them as Germany? By striking Gaza — and more than that, by subjecting it to starvation and what amounts to extermination as a means of pressure — they have sought and continue to seek this,” he said.

Asked for his reaction to the latest Israeli strike, which followed an attack that Israel says killed an Israeli soldier, Trump said Israel had the right to respond.

“They took out, they killed an Israeli soldier, so the Israelis hit back and they should hit back. When that happens, they should,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Trump added that “nothing” will jeopardise the ceasefire in Gaza .

Israeli forces said they struck dozens of terror targets and terrorists in retaliation for what they described as violations of the ceasefire.

Israel’s defence minister accused Hamas of an attack that killed an Israeli soldier and of breaching terms on the return of deceased hostages. Hamas denied involvement, saying it had no connection to the attack and accusing Israel of trying to undermine the truce.

The Gaza health ministry reported at least 104 Palestinians killed in the strikes on Tuesday night, a toll that underlined how fragile the ceasefire remains.

Trump characterised Hamas as a narrow but deadly force.

“Hamas is a very small part of peace in the Middle East and they have to behave,” he said, adding that “if they're not good, they're going to be terminated. Their lives will be terminated.”

Trump also suggested broader international backing for enforcement of the accord, noting that “we have many countries that are willing to do that.”

“You know, we have many countries, even Japan today, said we'd love to be involved in the Middle East.”

“We made a deal with Hamas that they’re going to be very good. They’re going to behave. They’re going to be nice. And if they’re not, we’re going to go and we’re going to eradicate them, if we have to. They’ll be eradicated, and they know that,” Trump said.

The remarks come as the ceasefire implemented earlier this month as phase one of a wider peace plan signed in Sharm El-Sheikh has been strained by fresh exchanges of fire, with both Israel and Hamas accusing the other of violating the truce.

US and regional diplomats have been urgently trying to shore up the agreement.

Netanyahu said the new designation reflects Israel’s recovery and response following the October 7 attacks, which he described as a national catastrophe that the country has overcome with resolve.

“We rose from the terrible disaster of October 7th. We rose with strength and delivered a fierce battle to our enemies,” he said. “This is the War of Revival of our people , a direct continuation of the War of Independence.”

Netanyahu argued that the conflict is not only a military campaign but part of a larger effort to eliminate existential threats, particularly from Iran and its allied groups, Viory reports.

“We removed the existential threat of the Iranian axis from above us,” he stated. “We established the national revival project in the land of Israel, in our strong and thriving state.”

Referencing the operation against Iran, With the Strength of a Lion’ against Iran, he invoked a traditional ethos, “a people like a lion will rise.”

The Prime Minister also revealed that bravery medals and commendations for Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers and commanders will include the new official war name. “As in previous military campaigns, the awards of this campaign will bear the official name of the War of Revival,” he added.

The Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, following Hamas attacks that killed 1,139 people, mostly Israeli civilians and captured over 200 hostages. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths at the time of publication.

Ramaphosa stressed that while the ceasefire and prisoner exchanges are positive steps, they cannot substitute justice for the Palestinian people .

“The peace deal… will have no bearing on the case that is before the International Court of Justice ,” he said. “Israel must respond to our pleadings by January next year. The court will then set a date for evidence to be presented,” he added.

South Africa launched the case in late 2023, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention through its military operations in Gaza . According to Ramaphosa, accountability remains essential despite diplomatic progress.

“We cannot go forward without the healing that needs to take place,” he said, noting reports of over 67,000 deaths and widespread destruction in Gaza.

Ramaphosa welcomed the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners as a “confidence-building measure,” saying it should strengthen the ceasefire and open the door to renewed peace negotiations.

However, he insisted the ultimate goal must remain clear:

“Real peace means Palestine as an independent state, living side by side with Israel, both enjoying sovereignty and self-determination. That is what international law demands.”

So far, 20 living Hamas hostages have been exchanged for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners under phase one of the peace deal.

He’s also expected to meet the families of hostages before heading to Egypt for the formal signing of a peace agreement.

While addressing the Knesset on Monday, October 13, Trump shared a light moment about Netanyahu’s frequent requests for military equipment.

“Bibi would call me so many times, can you get me this weapon, that weapon, that weapon? Some of them I never heard of, Bibi, and I made them. But we'd get them here, wouldn't we?” he said.

Earlier, the final group of twenty living hostages held by Hamas was handed over to the Red Cross. Alongside this, the remains of 28 deceased hostages are also expected to be returned. In return, Israel will release about 1,700 Palestinians who have been detained in Gaza since October 2023, as well as 250 others serving life sentences.

The current peace deal, which Israel and Hamas agreed to last week, is unfolding in stages. The first phase includes a ceasefire, exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the 'yellow line' in Gaza.

Later phases will look at how Gaza will be governed, the role of Hamas going forward, and plans for rebuilding the region.

On October 9, 2025, Israel began withdrawing forces from parts of the Gaza Strip under the first phase of a new ceasefire and hostage-release agreement, retaining control over roughly 53 % of the territory.

The map released in connection with the deal shows Israeli-held zones along coastal areas and key border regions, while portions of Gaza City, Khan Yunis, Deir el-Balah, and North Gaza revert to Palestinian control.

The partial pullback comes as part of the Trump-brokered 20-point peace plan signed that same day in Sharm el-Sheikh. Under that agreement, Israel’s forces are to reposition within 24 hours, and Hamas is expected to return all living hostages and the remains of deceased ones within 72 hours.

Israel’s decision to retain over half of Gaza highlights the delicate balance struck in the ceasefire: a withdrawal significant enough to signal de-escalation, yet limited enough to maintain leverage. The held zones include buffer strips along the coast and border crossings, likely critical for security, monitoring, and aid control.

The new arrangement takes effect amid bleak humanitarian conditions. Gaza’s population faces severe food insecurity, and United Nations agencies are poised to escalate aid deliveries, contingent on continued troop pullbacks. Broader Stakes & Unresolved Questions

This pause in hostilities brings cautious relief. Earlier in the day, the Israeli cabinet approved the agreement, formalising a ceasefire and setting in motion plans to free hostages and swap hundreds of prisoners.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed his vow to disarm Hamas and warned of renewed military options if violations occur. Hamas, meanwhile, agreed to the terms but faces internal pressures over governance, disarmament, and long-term stability.

International oversight will play a pivotal role. The first phase calls for a joint task force involving the U.S., Egypt , Qatar, Turkey, and others to monitor compliance. The Rafah crossing (Egypt–Gaza) is also slated to reopen under EU monitoring, a symbolic and functional milestone for civilian movement and aid flows.

For now, the world watches to see if this withdrawal will become the start of a sustained peace or a temporary lull in a longer struggle.

The agreement, announced on 9 October 2025, includes a complete ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s in the Agreement?

According to news agency Reuters, the deal , negotiated with strong U.S. involvement, includes several core components:

Why now?

The war, which began in October 2023, has led to the deaths of over 67,000 Palestinians and more than 1,200 Israelis, according to international observers. Efforts at de-escalation had repeatedly failed until recent weeks, when diplomatic momentum increased due to a combination of U.S. pressure, mounting international outcry, and shifts in political dynamics inside Israel and Gaza.

What Are the Phases of the Deal?

The deal is structured in three phases :

Who brokered the deal?

The deal was brokered primarily by the United States, with former President Donald Trump playing a direct diplomatic role. According to AP , Trump is expected to visit Israel in the coming weeks to address the Knesset and push for continued progress on post-war arrangements.

What’s the reaction?

In Jerusalem, residents expressed cautious optimism. “We’re very happy to hear that. It’s about time. After two years, we want our people back,” said one resident in footage aired by local broadcasters. The hostage releases are especially significant to Israeli public opinion, which has remained fixated on their return.

Palestinian factions have issued mixed responses. While Hamas has agreed to the terms, some factions have criticised the deal for not including clearer terms on lifting the full blockade of Gaza.

International reaction has been largely positive, with France, the UK, Egypt, Qatar, and the UN issuing statements of support for the ceasefire and urging both sides to adhere to its terms.

What Comes Next?

Even if fully implemented, the agreement leaves several major questions unresolved:

Experts warn that while the deal is a diplomatic breakthrough, lasting peace will require broader negotiations, including a potential return to talks on a two-state solution.

“My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, we are on the verge of a very major achievement,” Netanyahu said in a televised address ahead of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. “It is not yet final. We are working diligently on it, and I hope, with God’s help, that in the coming days … I will be able to announce to you the return of all our captives, both the living and the fallen, in one action, with the IDF remaining in the depths of the strip and in the areas controlling it,” he added.

The prime minister revealed that several weeks ago, he ordered the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to enter Gaza City, described as Hamas’s most significant stronghold, to increase military pressure. At the same time, Netanyahu met with former U.S. President Donald Trump and his team, seeking a diplomatic breakthrough. “Instead of Israel being isolated, Hamas is isolated,” he said. “As a result of the intensified military and diplomatic pressure, Hamas was pressed to agree to the plan we brought.”

Under the proposed deal, Netanyahu said, Hamas would release all 48 remaining hostages in the first stage, while Israeli forces would redeploy but maintain control of key areas deep inside Gaza to ensure security and prevent Hamas from reestablishing its strongholds.

Breaking from typical diplomatic rhetoric, Netanyahu opened his speech with a “pop quiz” for delegates.

“Let’s do something else for the first time at the UN. Let’s do a pop quiz. Who shouts, ‘Death to America ’?," he queried the Assembly while pulling out a placard. "Is it A. Iran, B. Hamas, C. Hezbollah, D. the Houthis, or E. all of the above? Correct, all of the above. Second question: Who has murdered Americans and Europeans in cold blood? A. Al-Qaeda, B. Hamas, C. Hezbollah, D. Iran, or E. all of the above? Correct again.”

The Israeli leader used the exercise to argue that Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis, threaten not just Israel but the entire modern world.

“Our enemies hate all of us with equal venom,” Netanyahu warned. “They want to drag the modern world back to the past, to a dark age of violence, fanaticism, and terror. You know deep down that Israel is fighting your fight.”

Netanyahu claimed that despite public criticism, many world leaders privately thank Israel for its intelligence, which he said has repeatedly prevented terrorist attacks in foreign capitals.

“Behind closed doors, many of the leaders who publicly condemn us, privately thank us,” he said. “They tell me how much they value Israel’s superb intelligence services that have prevented, time and again, terrorist attacks in their capitals, saving countless lives.”

He cited comments by former U.S. Air Force intelligence chief General George Keegan, who once said the U.S. would need “five CIAs” to match Israel’s intelligence capabilities, and noted that German Chancellor Merz admitted Israel was “doing the dirty work for all of us” after Israel struck Iranian nuclear sites in June.

Netanyahu also praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for showing Iran that there is “a price to pay” for targeting Americans.

Since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, Israel’s military campaign has stretched far beyond Gaza, marking one of the most expansive regional operations in decades.

A map highlights the countries struck by Israeli forces: Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Oman, illustrating how the conflict has become a regional confrontation rather than a strictly local war.

Israeli operations have hit multiple fronts. In Yemen, airstrikes targeted Houthi command centres and military depots in Sanaa and al-Jawf, leaving at least 46 dead and 165 wounded. The Houthis, who have launched drone and missile attacks toward Israel, vowed retaliation, further heightening tensions.

In Syria, strikes have focused on Iranian-backed militia networks and weapons convoys, with analysts noting a sharp increase in frequency and precision since October 7.

Israel has also carried out targeted operations inside Iraq and Iran, hitting militia and drone facilities tied to Tehran. These attacks have sparked fears that the conflict could spill over into a confrontation with Iran, a scenario that would have profound consequences for the region.

The impact of these strikes is being felt well beyond the battlefield. Oil prices have spiked repeatedly on news of Israeli attacks against Iranian and Houthi targets, reflecting fears of disruption to shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

European diesel prices have also risen as the conflict threatens critical energy flows. Investors are flocking to gold and U.S. Treasuries as safe-haven assets, while Gulf stock markets have dipped on days of heavy strikes.

Economists warn that if the conflict continues to expand, global growth projections could be downgraded, and inflationary pressures could persist longer than expected. For businesses and governments alike, the stakes are high: any escalation risks disrupting energy supplies, shipping routes, and trade flows that connect Asia, Europe, and Africa.

The map of countries targeted by Israel is no longer just a visual of military strikes; it is a warning sign of a region edging toward a broader conflict with potentially global economic consequences. Whether diplomacy can catch up to the pace of escalation will determine how deep and far-reaching the next phase of this crisis becomes.

The United Nations voted 142 in favour, 10 against, and 12 abstaining on a resolution calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state, signalling broad international support for a two-state solution.

A map shared by The World in Maps visually captures the moment: a sea of green stretches across much of the globe, with nations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America largely backing the resolution. Only a handful of countries, including the United States, Israel, and Argentina, voted against.

A small cluster abstained or did not vote, underscoring how isolated the opposition has become.

The resolution is ambitious. Drafted by France and Saudi Arabia, it calls for “timebound, tangible, irreversible steps” toward Palestinian statehood alongside Israel.

It condemns the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, demands the release of hostages, and urges an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The text also envisions reforms to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and limit Hamas’s role in governance .

Several Western countries, including Belgium, France, Canada, and Australia, have announced plans to formally recognise Palestine in the coming months. Germany publicly backed the resolution, calling it “a step toward lasting peace".

The vote has also rippled through global markets. Oil prices have ticked upward as traders weigh the potential for renewed instability in the region, and safe-haven assets such as gold and U.S. Treasuries are seeing increased demand.

Emerging market currencies in the Middle East have faced pressure, as investors brace for potential sanctions, new aid flows, or shifts in trade routes. Defence and security stocks have climbed on expectations of heightened security spending.

What happens next could be decisive. A high-level UN General Assembly meeting scheduled for later this month is expected to bring more nations to the table, with some potentially formalising recognition of Palestine.

Whether these moves lead to meaningful negotiations or further polarisation will shape not just Middle Eastern politics but also energy markets, global supply chains, and diplomatic alliances.

Israel strikes Hamas leadership in Doha

Israel launched an airstrike on Hamas’ political leadership headquarters in Qatar on Tuesday, September 9, as top officials convened to discuss a U.S. ceasefire proposal for Gaza. The strike on the soil of a U.S. ally marked a major escalation, angering Qatar, which condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation of all international laws and norms.” Hamas claimed its senior leaders survived but confirmed the death of five members, including the son of Gaza chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. The United States said it was notified before the strike but distanced itself, with President Donald Trump calling the incident “unfortunate” and unhelpful to peace efforts.

U.S. think tank warns on Qatar LNG reliance

The Foundation for Defence of Democracies has urged Taiwan to reduce reliance on Qatar for liquefied natural gas (LNG), warning of Beijing’s potential influence over energy supplies. In a tabletop exercise, the group highlighted Taiwan’s dependence on LNG imports, with nearly 30% coming from Qatar under a 27-year supply deal. The report cautioned that China could exploit this reliance through economic pressure, cyberattacks, or maritime blockades, putting Taiwan’s energy security and semiconductor industry at risk. The think tank advised diversification, increased U.S. energy cooperation, and renewable investments.

Qatar firms recognised among Asia’s best workplaces

Great Place to Work named its 2025 Best Workplaces in Asia, with multiple Qatar-based companies making the list. The rankings, drawn from surveys of nearly 7.5 million employees, recognised firms such as Hilton, DHL Express, Marriott International, Cisco, IHG Hotels & Resorts, and Chalhoub Group. Jules Youssef, Managing Director for Qatar and the Gulf, said the recognition reflected strong workplace cultures, employee well-being initiatives, and innovative management practices that highlight Qatar’s expanding business ecosystem.

Qatar denounces Israeli ‘crimes’ at UN rights council

At the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Qatar’s Permanent Representative Dr. Hend bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. She condemned the targeting of Hamas political bureau residences in Doha, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the killing of journalists and aid workers. Dr. Al Muftah called for urgent international action to hold Israel accountable and to support the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Banking sector posts steady growth in July

Qatar’s banking sector recorded a 4.5% year-to-date rise in public sector loans to QR1,406.9bn in July 2025, according to QNB Financial Services. While private sector loans remained flat, the loan-to-deposit ratio rose to 134.3% from 132 in June, as loan growth outpaced deposits. Total banking assets stood at QR2.117 trillion, up 3.4% compared to year-end 2024. Analysts noted that public sector deposits rose modestly, led by increases in government and semi-government segments, while liquid assets represented a healthy 31% of total assets.

Türkiye and Iran's reaction to Israeli air strikes on targets in Doha will determine how the next phase of the middle east conflict evolves, according to a briefing note from security analysts. US president Donald Trump has said he is disappointed with the development and that Washington was not given sufficient notice to warn Qatar. However, the response of regional powers remains to be seen. A lack of response may embolden Israel to go after further targets in neighbouring nations, the report from Amana-ai suggested.

Around 10 Israeli jets are believed to have been involved in the attacks which were described as targeted in order to avoid collateral damage. Senior figures including Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's leader in Gaza and Khaled Mashaal, its leader abroad, were among the targets, according to Israeli media. Qatar described the strike as "cowardly" and a violation of international law.

Amana's report indicated that regional responses were expected to be limited, given Israel's military strength and the damage done to groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas itself, which might once have been expected to extract revenge.

The implications for ceasefire talks which have been brokered by Qatar is significant, as it has previously tried to take a neutral position in the conflict .

[This article was updated to clarify that the US said it was not given advanced notice of the Israeli strikes.]

Speaking at an event with Amnesty International, Guterres called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access.

“We see attacks on the International Criminal Court . Attacks on the international human rights system and its representatives. And flagrant violations of international law. From the horrors in Sudan and beyond to Russia's invasion in Ukraine, where we need a just and lasting peace based on the UN charter, international law and the UN resolutions. And of course, the relentless Israeli onslaught on Gaza,” Guterres said.

He highlighted the disproportionate level of violence in Gaza, adding, “I have repeatedly condemned the horrific 7th October terror attacks by Hamas. But nothing can justify the explosion of death and destruction since. The scale and scope is beyond anything we have seen in recent times,” Viory quotes.

He added, “ Children , speaking of wanting to go to heaven because, at least they say there is food there. We hold video calls with our own humanitarians who are starving before our eyes. And this is not just a humanitarian crisis, it's a moral crisis that challenges the global conscience. We will continue to speak out at every opportunity, but words don't feed hungry children."

Background on Gaza Conflict

Israeli military operations in Gaza, launched following the October 7 Hamas attacks, have reportedly killed over 59,219 Palestinians and injured more than 143,045, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health. The conflict has devastated civilian infrastructure and pushed millions to the brink of famine.

“Let me repeat, 1000 people killed, not in combat, but in desperation, while the entire population starves. We need action,” Guterres urged. “At the same time, we need urgent, concrete and irreversible steps towards the two-state solution.”

Guterres called on global leaders not to “turn a blind eye” to their obligations, describing the crisis as not only humanitarian but also a test of international justice and morality.

According to UNICEF, over 2.4 million people , including 1.1 million children, are at risk of starvation due to the closure of crossings and the lack of food and nutritional supplies.

Susan Mohammed Marouf, a nutritionist at the Patients’ Friends Society, warned of the dire situation. “We currently have four child patients in the Therapeutic Nutrition Department, all of whom are suffering from severe malnutrition. This is due to a lack of nutritional supplements and basic foods necessary for maintaining health,” she said.

Marouf explained to Viory that the shortage of essential foods including proteins, vegetables, and fruits, has led to widespread malnutrition, worsening the condition of the most vulnerable.

“Malnutrition is affecting all age groups, particularly children, who are the most vulnerable in society. Their condition has worsened since the ban on aid and supplements,” she noted, adding that even medical staff are struggling to perform their duties due to food scarcity.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that 10 more people died from famine-related causes on Wednesday, bringing the death toll from hunger to 111. The health system has nearly collapsed, with 38 hospitals reportedly destroyed.

“Today, most people suffer from malnutrition, including medical staff, who are unable to perform their duties properly. Doctors are so fatigued due to a lack of food that they cannot treat patients properly, not to mention children, who are the most vulnerable. Their conditions are even more severe,” Marouf added.

The World Health Organisation has described the situation as “mass starvation caused by a blockade preventing the entry of food and medical aid.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has labelled it a “horror show.”

Israel, however, has denied responsibility, with government spokesperson David Minster claiming that the shortages are “man-made,” blaming Hamas for the crisis.

Thousands of desperate residents swarmed the Zikim aid distribution centre in northern Gaza on Tuesday, July 22, searching for flour and other basic supplies amid a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

As food and essentials remain scarce due to ongoing conflict and blockades, some managed to carry home sacks of flour, while others returned empty-handed and exhausted.

Video footage from the area showed men and women trudging along dusty roads with heavy sacks slung over their shoulders. UN-marked vehicles were present at the scene, with children seen clambering onto their roofs in search of assistance or shelter.

Residents say the price of food has skyrocketed beyond reach. “This bag used to cost 25 shekels — now it’s 2,500,” said Ali Abdullah, balancing a sack of flour as he spoke. “That’s $764. I risked my life to get it.” He added that the flour would barely sustain his household of 18 for four days.

Others weren’t so lucky. Wael Abu al-Anzin said he showed up before dawn but left with nothing. “We didn’t take anything,” he said, visibly distraught. “I haven’t eaten in five days. I walked home wondering how I’d feed my children tonight.”

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 15 people , including four children, have died from famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours alone. The overall toll now stands at 101 famine-related deaths, 80 of them minors.

The crisis is hitting children the hardest. The Palestinian News Agency estimates that some 900,000 children in Gaza are going hungry, with 70,000 already diagnosed with malnutrition.

This deepening crisis unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing military operations in the region. The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led attack on Israel killed 1,139 people and took over 200 hostages. Israel launched a large-scale response that continues to this day.

Since the outbreak of war, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports that 59,106 people have been killed and over 142,000 injured in Gaza. A temporary truce and prisoner exchange brought a brief pause in March, but fighting resumed on the 18th of that month and has not stopped since.

Heatwave sweeping across the Gaza Strip is worsening an already dire humanitarian emergency, intensifying the struggles of more than 1.7 million displaced Palestinians.

Amid extreme temperatures, critical shortages of water, food, and medical care are pushing public health systems to the brink.

Sanitation systems are collapsing, clean water is increasingly scarce, and overcrowded shelters offer little protection from the oppressive heat. Medical workers report that the soaring temperatures are aggravating the conditions of vulnerable patients, many of whom are packed into makeshift tent camps with minimal access to treatment or cooling.

The crisis is especially critical for thousands of injured individuals, including burn victims and those in need of continuous care, who now face increased risks due to inadequate medical infrastructure and relentless heat.

U.S. President Donal Trump is making waves again but this time, as Noble Peace Prize nominee.

In a letter to the Noble Peace Committee, Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said Trump, who is currently involved in a peace negotiation between Israel and Hamas had "demonstrated steadfast and exceptional dedication to promoting peace, security and stability around the world."

This nomination adds to Trump's previous considerations for the award, including a recent nomination from Pakistan for his role in facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

The Nobel Peace Prize, established by Alfred Nobel, honours individuals or organisations that have significantly advanced international peace.

Nominations are submitted by qualified individuals such as government officials, academics, and former laureates, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee responsible for the final selection.

The 2025 laureate will be announced on October 10, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10 in Oslo.

If awarded, Trump would become the fifth U.S. president to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, joining Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama.

Qatar urges Gaza deal, and Israeli political gridlock

Qatar is pressuring Hamas to agree to a hostage deal, but internal disagreements within the group are hindering progress. At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a political dilemma: pursuing a deal could endanger his fragile coalition.

Virgin Australia to launch direct Doha flights

Virgin Australia will begin operating direct flights to Doha from Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Melbourne on June 12, 2025, through a strategic partnership with Qatar Airways. The agreement marks Virgin Australia's return to the long-haul market using Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and crew. It enables Virgin to re-enter widebody operations nearly five years after retiring its previous twin-aisle fleet.

Documents reveal Qatar’s financial support for Hamas

Israeli military operations in Gaza have uncovered documents detailing extensive collaboration between Hamas, Iran, and Qatar, according to Israel’s Channel 12. The files reveal that in May 2021, following Operation Guardian of the Walls, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh informed Yahya Sinwar, then-leader in Gaza, that Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani had pledged $11 million in discreet financial support for Hamas’s “resistance” efforts.

Qatar’s Islamic finance assets reach $187.6 billion in 2024

Qatar’s Islamic finance assets grew by 4.1% year-on-year to QR 683 billion ($187.6 billion) in 2024, according to the Islamic Finance Report by Bait Al Mashura Financial Consulting. Deposits in Islamic banks increased by 8.2% to QR 339.1 billion ($93 billion), with the private sector contributing 57%. This growth highlights Qatar’s strengthening position in global Islamic finance, a sector projected to reach $4.9 trillion by 2025.

World’s largest 3D construction printer begins at Doha

The world’s largest 3D construction printer, the BODXL, has been installed at a school construction site in Doha, Qatar. Developed by COBOD International and operated in partnership with UCC Holding, the printer was unveiled at a VIP event this week. A second BODXL unit is scheduled to arrive later this month. Together, the two printers will construct the world’s largest 3D printed building—a multi-thousand square meter school for Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal.

Qatar-Libya partnership to fight financial crimes

Qatar’s Financial Information Unit (QFIU) and the Libyan Financial Information Unit have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral ties and boost international cooperation in combating financial crimes. The agreement aims to enhance collaboration and facilitate the exchange of financial intelligence, reflecting both countries' commitment to international standards, especially the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.

Hamas support

At The Jerusalem Post Annual Conference, Florida Senator Rick Scott stated that U.S. President Donald Trump is committed to "doing everything he can to expand peace and build relationships not just for America but for Israel." Addressing concerns over Trump’s trip to Qatar, Scott expressed strong distrust toward the Gulf nation, condemning its hosting of Hamas leaders as "despicable." He also revealed that he pushed for a review last year, while serving on the House Committee on Armed Services, of the reasons behind the continued presence of a U.S. military base in Qatar.

' State sponsor of terrorism'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party has submitted a bill to the Knesset aiming to designate Qatar as a “state sponsor of terrorism,” effectively barring it from mediating in any negotiations involving Israel. Introduced by Likud Knesset Member Moshe Saada, the bill specifically targets Qatar’s role in talks with Hamas and would prohibit countries labelled as terrorism supporters from donating to or trading with Israel. The draft legislation accuses Qatar of being “the world’s largest investor in terrorism,” alleging its support for groups including the Taliban, Islamic State, Hamas, and Hezbollah, and describes the Gulf state as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Travel and tourism

Qatar’s Travel & Tourism sector is experiencing strong growth, with projections indicating it will contribute QR124.2 billion to the national economy in 2025, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). This figure is expected to rise to QR166.6 billion by 2035, positioning the sector as a key driver of economic development. International visitors currently account for nearly 90% of travel spending, with over 75% of trips made for leisure, underscoring Qatar’s appeal as a global tourist destination. The sector is also poised to support over 350,000 jobs in 2025, growing to more than 487,000 by 2035.

Qatar Economic Forum

The fifth edition of the Qatar Economic Forum will be held in Doha from May 20–22 under the theme "The Road to 2030: Transforming the Global Economy." Organised in collaboration with Media City Qatar, the Forum will gather global leaders and top CEOs to examine the major shifts redefining the economic landscape. This year’s agenda centres on the evolving dynamics of global capital flows, with particular focus on the Gulf region’s emergence as a key financial hub. With bold economic reforms and increasingly influential sovereign wealth funds, the Gulf is transitioning from an energy powerhouse to a major driver of global finance and foreign direct investment.

The demonstration comes amid growing public frustration over the government’s handling of the war that began after Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023. Of the 251 individuals taken hostage during that attack, Israeli authorities report that 57 remain in captivity in Gaza, including 34 confirmed dead by the military.

“589 days of hell since the October 7 massacre, and instead of bringing them all home by agreeing to the deal that is on the table, Netanyahu is dragging us into a needless political war that will lead to the death of the hostages and soldiers,” said Zahiro Shahar Mor, the nephew of slain hostage Avraham Munder, addressing the crowd of protesters.

Another demonstrator, speaking to AFP, expressed a complete lack of faith in the government . “My first hope is to see this government fall. Because I have no trust in them whatsoever, I would love the hostages to come back as fast as possible, but I cannot really trust them. So my first hope and my first message is, let's take this government down,” he said.

The protests coincided with a significant escalation in military activity. Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that Israeli air strikes on Sunday, May 18, resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people, with more than half identified as children .

In a statement, the Israeli military said the expansion of its operations is aimed at "achieving all the war's objectives," which include the release of hostages and "the defeat of Hamas."

Israel's military said he was back inside Israel to be "reunited with his family". Flag-waving crowds gathered to greet the convoy carrying Alexander, and in Tenafly, New Jersey, where he grew up, large crowds celebrated his release.

Close friends and family chanted his name and applauded at the news that Alexander had been freed, footage released by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum showed. The Israeli army later said he was being taken by helicopter to a hospital where he would "receive medical treatment" and "be reunited with other members of his family".

Hamas has accused Israel of waging a "hunger war " in Gaza, where the risk of famine continues to grow amid preparations for a wider military offensive.

The remarks, made by senior Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim, came after Israel reportedly approved a military strategy that includes the long-term occupation of the Gaza Strip, according to an Israeli official.

The ongoing conflict , triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents at least once.

A two-month blockade, in place since early March, has significantly deepened the humanitarian crisis.

“There is no point in discussing ceasefire proposals while the hunger and extermination war persists in Gaza,” Naim told AFP.

The animals are caught in nets, butchered, and cooked with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and local spices - one of the few ingredients still found in the empty markets.

“When the war started, there was food shortage. There is no food. So [turtle meat] is an alternative for other sources of protein,” Abdel Halim Qanan, a local fisherman, told the AFP.

Majida Qanan, a 61-year-old displaced resident, described the scarcity, saying, “Crossings are closed and markets are empty. There are only cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. I buy two small bags for 60 or 80 shekels.”

She explained that the turtles, once caught, are shared among neighbours rather than sold for profit. “We distribute it to families, and everyone eats it and shares it. It is not for sale. We catch it and distribute it to those who are willing to eat it.”

For many Gazans, this practice is not entirely new. Abdel Halim Qanan recalls that turtle meat sustained his ancestors when they were displaced from Al-Jura, near Ashkelon, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. “Back then, they suffered from hunger and poverty, and they too consumed turtles,” he recalled.

Israel maintains that Hamas is diverting aid, a claim the militant group denies. Meanwhile, humanitarian corridors remain shut, and aid deliveries have stalled, leaving civilians increasingly cut off from vital resources.

Israel has introduced new conditions for advancing to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, demanding the complete demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the removal of Hamas from the territory. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar emphasised that Israel "will not accept the continued presence of Hamas or any other terrorist groups" in Gaza.

These stipulations were not part of the original ceasefire agreement, which primarily focused on the exchange of hostages and prisoners, increased humanitarian aid, and a partial Israeli troop withdrawal.

The second phase of the truce aims to secure the release of Israeli hostages and address conditions for a potential full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

The ceasefire, initiated on January 19, 2025, has faced challenges, with negotiations for its extension encountering obstacles. Israel has accused Hamas of misusing humanitarian aid and insists on the release of additional hostages as a prerequisite for progressing with the ceasefire.

During a press conference, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei emphasised that the international community should support Palestinians in securing their right to self-determination, rather than pushing for relocation.

"Again, I think the international community, as part of their legal and moral responsibility to help Palestinians secure their right to self-determination, has to help them in this way, rather than pushing for other ideas that would be tantamount to ethnic cleansing and a sort of genocide by other means," Esmaeil said.

This isn't the first time concerns about ethnic cleansing have been raised.

A UN human rights expert, Francesca Albanese, warned in October 2023 that Palestinians are in grave danger of mass ethnic cleansing, calling for urgent international mediation to cease hostilities between Hamas and Israeli occupation forces.

The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel has indeed reached a critical point, with the international community urged to take action to prevent further escalation.

In Deir al-Balah's bustling central market, security forces were seen monitoring pedestrians and traffic, a sight that brought relief to some residents. “You used to walk down the street and find your phone stolen, find your money stolen, and find anything stolen from you. Today you are walking down the street saying it casually because there is safety and security in this country,” one pedestrian shared with AFP.

The ceasefire, which began on Sunday, January 19, also included an agreement for hostage releases and has allowed some displaced residents to return home. However, according to the United Nations , hundreds of thousands of people across the Gaza Strip remain dependent on humanitarian aid.

UN spokesperson Farhan Haq, addressing journalists during a press briefing on January 21, stated that over 90% of housing units in Gaza had been either damaged or destroyed during the conflict.

The deal, which aims to end 15 months of intense conflict and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, has been met with both relief and scepticism.

Many Israelis are relieved by the prospect of peace and the return of hostages. Families of those held captive have expressed overwhelming joy and hope that their loved ones will soon be home. "This is a significant step forward that brings us closer to seeing all hostages return," said a spokesperson for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters.

The emotional toll of waiting for news about the hostages has been immense, and the ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for their safe return.

However, not all reactions have been positive. Some Israelis are sceptical about the ceasefire's longevity and effectiveness. Concerns about the potential for the agreement to fall apart are prevalent. "Deep anxiety and concerns accompany us regarding the possibility that the agreement might not be fully implemented, leaving hostages behind," the spokesperson added.

The fear that the ceasefire might be temporary and that hostilities could resume at any moment looms large.

Politically, the ceasefire has also generated mixed opinions. Some view it as a necessary step towards peace, while others see it as a concession to Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to confirm the finalisation of the deal, adding to the uncertainty. The agreement's terms, which include the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages, have been a point of contention.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has emphasised Israel's commitment to supporting a truce deal with Hamas in Gaza. Sa'ar's comments come amid ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

"I believe that if we will achieve this hostage deal, we will have a majority in the government that will support the agreement. So, this is the simple answer. I believe, I know, there is a true willingness from our side to reach an agreement.," Sa'ar stated during a press conference in Rome alongside Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

The negotiations, facilitated by mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, have reached an advanced stage. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken indicated that a final proposal is on the table, awaiting Hamas's acceptance.

His comments come on the back of the ICC issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials, which has triggered a debate within the EU about compliance and consistency in upholding international law.

At a G7 foreign ministers meeting near Rome, Borrell emphasised on Tuesday, November 26, the importance of EU member states adhering to their commitments under the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.

He pointed out the inconsistency in applauding the ICC's actions against Russian President Vladimir Putin while hesitating to support similar actions against Israeli officials.

"All member states of the European Union have signed the Rome Convention. And it is not something that you can pick and choose. You cannot applaud when the court goes against Putin and remain silent when the court goes against Netanyahu," Borell told reporters. "Like it or not, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a court, as powerful as any national court. And if the Europeans don't support the International Criminal Court, then there will not be any hope for justice."

The ICC on Thursday, November 21, issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former defence chief Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict.

However, Hungary has expressed dissatisfaction with the ICC's ruling, suggesting it will not implement it.

According to Euronews , the country's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called the warrants "outrageously impudent” and “cynical”. He further announced he would rather invite Israel's Netanyahu to travel to Budapest.

The strikes , which occurred over the weekend, targeted military installations in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam, resulting in the deaths of four Iranian soldiers.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched the strikes in response to what they described as "months of continuous attacks" from Iran and its regional allies.

The IDF's operation, which involved three waves of precise strikes, was completed within a few hours, targeting key military sites but avoiding nuclear facilities and oil fields.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei during a weekly televised news conference emphasised that Iran would use "all available means" to respond to the Israeli aggression.

He stated that Iran's response would be proportionate to the nature of the Israeli attacks and aimed at defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"I emphasise that our position is clear, we are using all available means to respond firmly and effectively to the aggression of the Zionist regime. Basically, the nature of our response will depend on the nature of the attack," Esmaeil Baghaei said.

Iran, as a supporter of Hezbollah fighters, has been a target of Israel for several months.

Hezbollah, which is engaged in heavy fighting with Israeli forces in Lebanon, and also the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is battling Israel in the Gaza Strip.

This announcement came alongside the confirmation of the death of Yahya Sinwar, the group's leader, as stated by Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya in a video message.

Al-Hayya described Sinwar as a "great leader" and emphasized that the hostages would only return when hostilities cease, Israel withdraws from Gaza, and Palestinian prisoners are released.

Sinwar was instrumental in orchestrating the deadly attack that left over 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians. Since then, Hamas has held 251 individuals hostage, with 97 still unaccounted for, including 34 confirmed dead by Israeli officials.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Sinwar's death a significant development in the fight against Hamas, although many in Gaza doubt it will lead to an end to the violence.

Abiad commended the hospitals' quick response to the crisis, stating, "The hospitals did a great job yesterday. A lot of them, including this one, cancelled surgeries to provide care for the patients. The patients, as I see today, are receiving the best medical care."

Joel Khadrajit, an ER doctor at Hotel-Dieu, described the severity of the injuries: "The injuries were mainly to the eyes and hands, which caused finger amputations, shrapnel in the eyes—some people lost their sight."

She added that the hospital received 80 injured patients. "About twenty of them were admitted to the ICU immediately and were put on ventilators to prevent suffocation due to swelling in their faces. The rest are going one after the other to the operating room. Today, we have 55 surgeries."

The explosions overwhelmed hospitals in areas controlled by Hezbollah, with dozens of casualties reported. According to Health Minister Abiad, the death toll has reached at least a dozen, including children, while nearly 300 others remain critically injured.

In the aftermath of the explosions, Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel, although Israel has yet to comment on the incident. Earlier, Israel had announced plans to expand its military objectives in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, as AFP reported.

This annual event is a significant religious observance for the group worldwide, symbolising the struggle against injustice and tyranny.

Imam Hussein's death in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD is a pivotal event in Islamic history. His martyrdom is seen as a symbol of resistance against oppression, and it plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of the Shiite community. The Shiite or Shia community consists of Muslims who believe that Hussein’s descendants were the rightful successors to lead the Islamic faith after his death.

In Lebanon, the commemoration of Ashura involves various rituals and activities. Participants often wear black to signify mourning and set up black funeral tents. They carry red flags symbolising Hussein's blood and listen to clerics recount the story of his martyrdom. The atmosphere is sombre, with many participants crying and beating their chests in a display of grief and solidarity.

This year's commemoration also paid tribute to Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has heightened tensions in the region. Hezbollah, a prominent Shiite militant group in Lebanon, has been actively involved in the conflict, launching attacks against Israel and facing retaliatory strikes.

The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Israel's war on Gaza, the possible confrontation between China and the West because of Taiwan , the Houthis anger with Israel , and the recent decision by Iran and Israel to launch missiles and drones against each other has further intensified tensions.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has said World War III is coming and has warned of a shift from a post-war to a pre-war world, predicting potential wars involving China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran within the next five years. "A combination of Russia, China and Iran must be seen as very strong vis-à-vis the West,” Shapps said.

Typically, a world war involves armed conflicts between global powers with advanced military capabilities, across multiple regions. With the United States, China, and Russia among the prominent global powers, any conflict involving these nations could escalate to a world war scenario.

Why we might be heading to WWIII

Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned in March 2024 against the dire consequences of a direct conflict between Russia and the US-led NATO alliance, suggesting it could precipitate World War III.

Lucas Moyon, an expert from the College of Charleston, says he fears World War III will happen soon and its consequences could be very disruptive citing the potential devastation of a conflict with China, particularly highlighting concerns over cyber and space warfare capabilities. Moyon warns that China's advancements in antisatellite technology pose a significant threat to global infrastructure, including telecommunications and financial systems.

“Toughness on China has enduring and broad political appeal in the U.S., and Xi Jinping has grown increasingly aggressive toward Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. If China attacks the territory of our Pacific allies, the U.S. is sure to intervene,” Moyon explains .

A survey from January 2024 showed that 53% of Britons think it is likely there will be another world war in the next 5 to 10 years.

Meanwhile, in a March 2022 poll , 69% of Americans stated that they are concerned that the invasion of Ukraine could lead to a nuclear war and fear that we are at the beginning stages of World War III.

Germany’s defence minister Boris Pistorius has expressed concerns that Vladimir Putin may launch an attack on NATO within the next five to eight years. Pistorius said the frequent threats from the Kremlin indicate the need for vigilance regarding the possibility of a future attack on a NATO country by Putin's regime.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Bauer, echoed these sentiments. He said peace is not guaranteed and that NATO forces are actively preparing for a potential conflict with Russia.

He cautioned that in the event of a wider war in Europe , a mobilisation of civilians would be necessary, and governments should begin recruiting much larger reserve forces immediately.

Pandor revealed that she had requested an increase in her security from the country's police chief after she and her children had become targets on social media. She expressed these concerns while speaking to the media at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation’s Address, The Citizen reports.

“I spoke to Minister Cele because of the various messages I was getting, and I felt it would be better if we had extra security. What I am more concerned about is my family because in some of the social media messages, my children are mentioned, and so on,” said Pandor.

Adding that, despite the threats and intimidation, South Africa remains resolute in following through on the course. “This is part of the course; the Israeli agent’s intelligence services are how they behave, and they seek to intimidate you. So, we must not be intimidated; there is a course that is underway. The people of the world and Palestine didn’t draw back when the apartheid state was at its worst.”

“They stood with the liberation movement, so we can’t stand back now, we must be with them, and I think one of the things we must not allow is a failure of courage. It’s extremely important we continue with this, we talk to the South African people, and they understand why it is that we have taken up this moral course,” Pandor said.

South Africa approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) seeking a series of orders against Israel. The requests included an immediate suspension of Israel's offensive attacks in Gaza, a cessation of forced displacement, facilitation of humanitarian access for thousands of displaced Palestinians, and the preservation of evidence related to the conflict.

What we know

What they said

South Africa has expressed strong opposition to Israeli military operations in Gaza, particularly in the context of the case it has brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The country's allegations of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza underscore its condemnation of Israel's actions, contributing to the ongoing international debate and legal proceedings surrounding the conflict. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa explained that "our opposition to the ongoing slaughter of the people of Gaza has driven us as a country to approach the ICJ... As a people who once tasted the bitter fruits of dispossession, discrimination, racism, and state-sponsored violence, we are clear that we will stand on the right side of history," he is quoted by the BBC. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the UK Prime Minister said Rishi Sunak believed South Africa's case was "completely unjustified and wrong." He thus states, "This legal action does not serve the court of peace. The UK government stands by Israel's clear right to defend itself within the framework of international law." An advocate of the High Court of South Africa, Adila Hassim, argued that "South Africa contends that Israel has transgressed Article Two of the (Genocide) Convention, committing acts that fall within the definition of genocide. The actions show a systematic pattern of conduct from which genocide can be inferred.” In a response to South Africa’s case, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reported to have said, "Israel is accused of genocide while it is fighting against genocide... Israel is fighting murderous terrorists who carried out crimes against humanity: They slaughtered, they raped, they burned, they dismembered, they beheaded—children, women, the elderly, young men, and women.”

What they said

In a statement, Gay wrote, “After consultation with members of the Harvard Corporation, it has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual... It has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigour-two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am-and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fuelled by racial animus.” The Harvard Corporation said in a statement that Dr. Gay would resume her faculty position after resigning. "While President Gay has acknowledged missteps and has taken responsibility for them, it is also true that she has shown remarkable resilience in the face of deeply personal and sustained attacks. While some of this has played out in the public domain, much of it has taken the form of repugnant and, in some cases, racist vitriol directed at her through disgraceful emails and phone calls. We condemn such attacks in the strongest possible terms," the statement read.

CNN reports that the Emirate of Qatar has not ceased financial aid to Gaza and that aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip continues.

Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khalifi, the Minister of Interior of Qatar, in a conversation with CNN in the Middle East , emphasized that Qatar continues to donate a lot of cash to support the residents of the Gaza Strip and will continue to do so as it did during previous years.

Al-Khalifi stated that "Qatar is not going to change its mission towards the Palestinian nation."

According to the Qatari official, Doha's duty is to "continually help and support Palestinian brothers and sisters". He emphasized that this emirate continues to provide financial aid to Gaza "in a systematic way" as has happened in previous years.

The continuation of Qatar's aid to the Gaza Strip is amid the United States and Israel’s rebuke arguing that this area is run by the Hamas militia, and financial aid to Hamas is aid to terrorism.

After the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israeli territory, Tel Aviv authorities have repeatedly accused some Gulf countries, including Qatar, of providing financial support to Hamas.

According to Independent Persian, Israel said Qatari diplomats "enter the Gaza Strip every month with suitcases containing millions of dollars in cash."

However, Doha's first official financial aid to the Gaza administration came with the agreement of Israel in 2018. At that time, due to the lack of funds of the Hamas government in Gaza, Doha took over the cost of paying the salaries of the employees and workers living in Gaza.

At that time, Benjamin Netanyahu, the then and current Prime Minister of Israel, welcomed this Qatari initiative and action.

Some of Benjamin Netanyahu's critics consider his initial support for authorizing financial aid to the administration of the Gaza Strip to be the Israeli prime minister's biggest mistake.

According to these critics, Hamas used these funds to prepare for attacks such as the events of October 7, Reuters reports. The Israeli government announced at least 1,200 Israeli citizens were killed during the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Amos Gilad, the retired major general of the Israeli army who has been a staunch opponent of Qatar's financial aid to Hamas, in a CNN interview on Sunday, December 10, compared the financial aid to Hamas to "oxygen, which is a factor of survival and stability for this group.”

UN warns humanitarian aid operations in Gaza becoming unviable amid ongoing challenges

Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, expressed concern over the viability of aid programs in Gaza. He highlighted the challenges, including the lack of safe zones and the potential risks to aid delivery, making it increasingly difficult for humanitarian operations to function effectively. The UN official emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure like hospitals and water purifiers in Gaza, as the region faces dual threats of conflict and disease, further exacerbated by the current challenges.

UN Security Council to vote on immediate ceasefire in Gaza following rare move by Secretary-General

The UN Security Council is set to convene on Friday for a crucial vote on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The United Arab Emirates has crafted a draft resolution, slated for consideration, following UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' unprecedented activation of Article 99 of the UN Charter. This rare move signals the gravity of the situation and allows the Secretary-General to bring critical issues threatening international peace and security to the Council's attention. This marks the fifth attempt to garner Council support for a unified stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, with previous drafts facing rejection.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed support for the U.S. decision to ban visas for Israeli extremist settlers, according to a report by Axios on December 6.
