As food insecurity deepens in Burkina Faso, Africa must rethink its refugee policy beyond foreign aid — Opinion

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)’s statistics map , Burkina Faso hosts approximately 2,062,534 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and nearly 43,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, 94% of whom are from neighbouring Mali. Recent reports indicate growing food insecurity among this vulnerable population, worsened by aid cuts, a challenge for most refugee-hosting countries on the continent.

The ever-raging conflicts are fuelling Africa’s refugee crises, piling pressure on the hosts. Whereas foreign assistance such as India’s rice donation to Burkina Faso projects the contribution of international partners, it raises concerns over Africa’s dependency. If a continent with approximately 65% of the world’s arable land and abundant water and sunshine, is incapable of feeding its refugee population appropriately, it suggests that the available natural resources are being underutilised or mismanaged.

This mismanagement, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), manifests in the persistent conflict over resources, like in the Horn of Africa, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Northern Nigeria, which displaces millions from their homes, dispossessing them of their assets. These events disrupt the agricultural value chain and claim a substantial chunk of the national budget, denying other pressing needs, particularly humanitarian response, of much-needed support.

“Conflict removes able-bodied men from agricultural production and, incidentally, places an extra work burden on women. It also diverts resources, directly and indirectly, from more productive and socially beneficial uses, and tests the willingness of the international community to provide assistance,” notes FAO, highlighting the equally disruptive role of other human-induced situations like drought and population booms and natural hazards, which channel resources away from development activities.

The pressure from foreign aid withdrawal should compel African countries to think more critically about models that are tailored for their local context, those that foster self-sustenance. And indeed, some, like Uganda, are transitioning to an alternative approach: development financing , which requires local government units to assume the role of providing social services to the refugees. However, such shifts are not devoid of limitations, especially with little or no support from stakeholders, most importantly, the refugee and host populations whose commitment contributes significantly to the prospect of peaceful coexistence.

“…the immediate challenge is to shift from a mindset focused on care and maintenance to one promoting development solutions to displacement. More specifically, there needs to be a move to sustainable interventions focused on economic inclusion and the promotion of self-reliance,” analysts urge.

With the biggest portion of Africa’s humanitarian sector foreign-funded, it’s time for the continent to pursue a comprehensive and integrated refugee policy that ensures proper utilisation of its vast natural resources, ensuring equitable distribution. The new framework must align with the African Union’s aspirations, such as fostering unity, and address long-standing issues, especially the inclusion of refugees in national development and self-reliance. The existing frameworks, like the 1969 OAU Convention, need reform. The new framework should capture the shifting dynamics, “including its definition of a refugee, in light of today’s Africa,” writes expert J O Moses Okello, emphasising the need to represent the actual realities.

Speaking at the launch in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, organiser Ezequiel Peressini said the flotilla was being mobilised because, in his words, “Trump’s false peace has brought nothing but the continuation of the genocide,” adding that the aim was to “break the blockade and open a humanitarian corridor.”

Peressini said the group wants to end what it described as the use of hunger as a weapon of war, and accused Israel of trying to “exterminate and expel the Palestinian people.” He also cited a death toll of more than 70,000 Palestinians and alleged massive bombardment, figures and characterisations that could not be independently verified in the announcement.

Another activist, Celeste Fierro, said the mission was a response to what she called a “lie” ceasefire linked to US President Donald Trump , arguing that “the policy of ethnic cleansing and apartheid continue” and that activists therefore needed to keep up pressure through direct action.

In a statement, the US government said it was “deeply concerned” by allegations that Somali authorities demolished a US-funded World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse at Mogadishu port and illegally took food supplies intended for malnourished women and children. Washington said it operates a “zero-tolerance policy” toward the theft, diversion or misuse of life-saving aid.

The State Department said all ongoing US assistance to the Somali federal government has been paused, warning that support will only resume if Somali authorities take accountability and implement corrective measures.

“The State Department has paused all ongoing U.S. assistance programs which benefit the Somali Federal Government. Any resumption of assistance will be dependent upon the Somali Federal Government taking accountability for its unacceptable actions and taking appropriate remedial steps,” an official post read.

The World Food Programme confirmed that the warehouse had been demolished by port authorities and said it contained specialised nutritious food for pregnant and breastfeeding women, girls and young children. A WFP spokesperson further warned that the facility was critical to emergency operations at a time when nearly a quarter of Somalia’s population, about 4.4 million people, is facing crisis levels of hunger or worse.

WFP said it is engaging Somali authorities and partners to address the situation.

Severe funding gaps undermine drought response in Somalia, affecting millions

Local authorities estimate that over 4.6 million people—approximately one-quarter of the Somali population—are currently impacted by drought-related hardships.

"Partners indicate that at least 120,000 people were displaced between September and December, as water prices soar, food becomes increasingly scarce, livestock die, and livelihoods collapse, " OCHA said in the update released on Monday, December 22.

The situation is also disrupting education, with more than 75,000 students having dropped out of school nationwide. OCHA anticipates that the upcoming dry season, spanning January to March, will exacerbate existing drought conditions.

The agency warned of increased water shortages, further livestock deaths, and rising food insecurity across many regions.

"Authorities are appealing for urgent assistance to avert a possible collapse of pastoral and farming livelihoods and to prevent avoidable loss of life. They warn that the next four months will be critical, as the next rainy season is not expected until April 2026," the update stated.

Despite the challenges, OCHA confirmed that the UN and its partners are actively involved in the response. "Support includes assessments, mapping available supply stocks, and coordinating emergency responses across water, food, nutrition, health and shelter sectors."

Humanitarian teams are also delivering cash assistance, distributing animal fodder, rehabilitating boreholes, and conducting field visits to monitor conditions and prepare for early interventions, according to OCHA. However, these operations are severely limited by ongoing financial constraints.

Earlier this month, it was reported that over 680 staff members with UN agencies in Somalia had been laid off since the beginning of 2025, following widespread funding shortages that have disrupted various humanitarian and development programs.

In response to the crisis, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated $10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support immediate needs. OCHA emphasised that "substantially more support is urgently needed."

The Somali NGO Consortium (SNC) also voiced concern over the deteriorating situation.

“The resources required to save lives are shrinking while communities grow more desperate. Somalia cannot afford to reverse the hard-won progress of recent years,” Nimo Hassan, Director of the Somali NGO Consortium, said in a December 14 press release .

With just days before the end of 2025, officials indicate that the humanitarian response plan for Somalia had received only about $370 million of the $1.4 billion required, representing just one-quarter of the total funding target.

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) says it needs $42.1 million by 2026 to support sexual and reproductive health care and assist survivors of gender-based violence. Ethiopia is now among the world’s most underfunded humanitarian crises, with UNFPA ranking it as its eighth-largest global appeal .

According to the agency, chronic underfunding has already led to the scaling back or suspension of key programmes. Many women are being left without safe childbirth services , emergency obstetric care, contraception or protection support. In 2025, UNFPA received only about $4 million of the $38.1 million it requested for Ethiopia.

UNFPA’s Executive Director, Diene Keita, warned that funding cuts are translating into closed clinics and survivors of sexual violence being turned away without help, calling these services “non-negotiable and life-saving.”

The situation is being worsened by overlapping crises, including conflict, climate-driven droughts and floods, and large-scale displacement. Ethiopia is also under additional strain from the war in neighbouring Sudan, as it hosts refugees fleeing violence and collapsing health systems.

UNICEF, on the other hand, says its humanitarian appeal for Ethiopian children remains heavily underfunded, putting essential services such as nutrition, health care and clean water at risk.

Video from the Burundian border area near Bujumbura shows men, women and children gathered around a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) truck as they waited to be transported to designated refugee camps. At several transit points, families remain stranded, exposed to heavy rainfall and poor sanitary conditions while awaiting evacuation.

Humanitarian officials have raised concerns over shortages of food, shelter and other basic supplies. Many of the newly arrived refugees have yet to receive assistance, increasing the risk of disease, especially amid persistent rain.

“Several people were killed, and our soldiers fled. As they were fleeing, they fired shots and people died,” said one woman who fled the violence with her three-month-old son. She described narrowly escaping gunfire as others around her were struck.

The security situation remains volatile, with the M23 group reportedly advancing to within a few kilometres of the Burundi–DRC border. Displaced families, carrying only what they could salvage, continue to wait anxiously for relocation despite difficult terrain and worsening weather conditions.

The decision was driven by severe funding shortages that have disrupted several development and humanitarian operations in the country.

Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that the layoffs included 158 international staff and 522 Somali employees. Key agencies affected include UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Smaller entities such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) also faced staff reductions.

Officials explained that the layoffs resulted from a sharp decline in financial support from international donors.

The drop in funding has stalled ongoing development and humanitarian programmes, including those previously backed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“The diversion of donor resources to crises in Ukraine , South Sudan, and Syria has further strained the funding available for Somalia,” one source said.

The source added that the budget cuts are limiting the UN’s ability to provide essential services and development programmes to vulnerable communities.

Somalia’s 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan is significantly underfunded, with only 23.7% of the required resources secured. The UN reported that the number of people receiving emergency food assistance fell from 1.1 million in August to 350,000 in November.

These reductions are occurring at a time when humanitarian needs in Somalia remain high. The UN estimates that at least 4.4 million people are expected to face acute food insecurity through December.

Additionally, 1.85 million children under the age of five are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition through mid-2026.

According to the head of the aid team, the convoy carried more than 195 tonnes of shelter materials, including 2,250 tents. He said the assistance aims to address the conditions faced by Gazans amid recent cold weather and rainfall, which have increased the need for emergency shelter.

The UAE launched the relief mission in November 2023 under the direction of President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Since the start of the conflict between Hamas and Israel , the initiative has provided continuous humanitarian support to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The activists were welcomed at the airport on Sunday, October 5, by relatives, journalists and supporters waving Palestinian flags and chanting for Palestine’s freedom.

On arrival, several recounted what they described as degrading treatment in Israeli custody.

”There has been humiliating and inhumane treatment throughout. We have been treated like animals,” one activist said.

“When we were shouting and asking for insulin for one of the people , a 75-year-old comrade who had been asking for insulin for three days, one of the soldiers said they didn’t have doctors for animals in prison,” he added. “Another Mexican colleague, who was asking for medicine for her heart condition, said it was urgent, and he said it would only be urgent when her heart stopped, according to another of the people who was there.”

Others expressed relief but also worry about what they described as a continuing genocide in Gaza .

“I am free and I am happy to be free, but my friends are still imprisoned in Israel, and Palestine is still not free. So all we can do is wait until everyone is free, until the genocide is stopped and Palestine is free,” an activist said.

The activists were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a fleet of vessels attempting to break Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza. None of the ships reached the enclave, with the closest being a vessel that had entered Gaza’s territorial waters but was intercepted by Israeli forces minutes away from the shore.

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said he was “proud that flotilla activists are being treated as terrorists,” adding, “Anyone who supports terrorism is a terrorist and deserves the same conditions applied to terrorists.”

Supporters of the flotilla say the mission was peaceful and humanitarian, intended to deliver aid and highlight the ongoing blockade of Gaza.

Footage spread by Israel-linked actors claimed no aid was on board the intercepted ships, an allegation Global Sumud Flotilla organisers have vehemently dismissed as “verifiably false” and a “systematic smear campaign.”

For its part, Israel has denounced the Spaniards’ inhumane treatment allegations as “fake news .”

“As we said, Israel is keen to have all the participants of this provocation deported as quickly as possible, but some of them deliberately chose to prolong the legal deportation process, preferring to linger in Israel,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on social media .

“All the legal rights of the participants in this PR stunt are fully upheld,” it continued. “Don’t believe the fake news they are spreading.”

While the 21 Spaniards are now home, hundreds of other activists from around the world remain in Israeli custody.

At her morning press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said her government had already sent four diplomatic notes to Israel. The letters requested guarantees of safety for the detainees, questioned the reasons for their arrest and pressed for their urgent repatriation.

“What the Israeli authorities are saying is that they are going to take them to a detention centre. Our consulate is there to support them in whatever is needed and demanding the immediate repatriation of our compatriots,” Sheinbaum said.

The president confirmed that the six Mexicans — Sol Gonzalez Eguia y Arlyn; Gabriela Medrano; Carlos Perez Osorio; Diego Vazquez Galindo; Ernesto Ledesma Arronte; and Laura Alejandra Velez Ruiz Gaytan — had been transferred to the port of Ashdod.

Sheinbaum reiterated her government’s opposition to Israel’s blockade of Gaza, calling it a barrier to life-saving aid.

“Humanitarian aid must reach Gaza, and our Mexican brothers and sisters, all of them, but specially our compatriots, must be repatriated immediately because they did not commit any crime ,” she told reporters.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of dozens of vessels from more than 40 countries, was intercepted in international waters earlier this week. Israeli forces detained hundreds of activists, among them climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, South African MP Mandla Mandela and 22 Italians.

Israel maintained that no boats reached Gaza and said the interceptions were necessary to enforce what it described as a lawful blockade. Its Foreign Ministry warned that any remaining ships attempting to approach the enclave would also be stopped.

Organisers of the flotilla said their mission was to deliver humanitarian supplies and highlighted the risks as they entered waters around 150 nautical miles from Gaza.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called Israel’s actions a violation of international law , while flotilla organisers rejected claims that participants had links to Hamas, insisting the mission was peaceful.

Efforts to break the Gaza blockade by sea have been mounted since 2008, most of them intercepted by Israel. The deadliest incident came in 2010, when Israeli forces stormed the Mavi Marmara ship and killed 10 Turkish activists.

One vessel from the Global Sumud Flotilla attempting to break Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza is still sailing, according to tracking data and a live stream.

The Marinette, which had mechanical issues and lagged behind the main armada of more than 40 ships, has not been intercepted and remains about 80 nautical miles from Gaza, Global Sumud Flotilla said.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry warned earlier that if the last ship approaches Gaza, “its attempt to enter an active combat zone and breach the blockade will also be prevented.”

The Marinette is still far from the area where most of the flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces.

According to the flotilla tracker, the closest any ship has come was the Mikeno, which evaded the blockade and was briefly visible from Gaza’s shores.

It claimed “Mikeno made history by becoming the first ship to break Israel's blockade of Gaza since 2009,” adding the vessel “missed Gaza's shore by a few minutes.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla also said a new wave of ships is crossing the Mediterranean, including ten vessels that left Italy five days ago. Among them is the Al-Damir, which is carrying journalists, doctors and activists.

Greta Thunberg says Israeli forces abducted her during Gaza aid flotilla mission: Video

In a video recorded and now circulating online, Thunberg said, “My name is Greta Thunberg. I'm a citizen of Sweden. If you are watching this video, I have been abducted and taken against my will by Israeli forces. Our humanitarian mission was nonviolent and abiding by international law. Please tell my government to demand my and the others' immediate release.”

Thunberg was among activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which said it was attempting to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. The group warned earlier that it was sailing into a “high-risk area” about 150 nautical miles off Gaza before contact was lost.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel ’s interception of the flotilla, calling it a “violation of international law” and urging international pressure for the release of those detained.

Israel, however, described the mission as a “political provocation”, defending the blockade as lawful under international maritime rules and claiming some participants had ties to Hamas, an accusation the organisers strongly denied.

Flotilla missions have repeatedly tried to challenge Israel’s naval blockade since 2008. Most have been intercepted, including the 2010 Mavi Marmara raid, in which ten Turkish activists were killed by Israeli commandos, sparking global outcry.

Thirty-four Malaysians are on board the flotilla , 12 of whom were detained after Israeli forces intercepted at least 13 vessels about 70 nautical miles (130 km) from Gaza’s coast.

Anwar said the move showed Israel’s disregard “not only for the rights of the Palestinian people but also for the conscience of the world.”

“I condemn in the strongest terms Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. These vessels carried unarmed civilians and life-saving humanitarian supplies for Gaza, yet they were met with intimidation and coercion,” he wrote on social media .

He vowed to pursue legal action to free the Malaysians and hold Israel to account.

“Malaysia will use all legitimate and lawful means at our disposal to ensure that Israel is held to account, especially in matters concerning Malaysian citizens,” he said. “The safety and dignity of our people are paramount, and we will not allow them to be compromised with impunity.”

As of writing, 40 boats had been seized by Israel, with only 12 still evading its naval forces.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is described as the largest maritime mission of its kind, with delegates from 44 countries forming the crew. Among them is climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The vessels are carrying humanitarian supplies, including rice, biscuits and milk powder, considered vital as international agencies warn of famine in Gaza.

In September, a United Nations (UN) commission concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza , citing evidence it imposed destructive conditions on the Palestinian people, including blocking food and water.

Anwar’s criticism comes at a time of growing unease in Asia over Israel’s actions. At the UN General Assembly, many countries in the region reiterated support for a two-state solution.

Malaysia has long been one of Israel’s fiercest critics. Anwar has previously said his country’s position has made it a target of Israeli intelligence, and at one point Kuala Lumpur even called for Israel’s expulsion from the UN.

The Malaysian premier vowed his country would continue to stand undeterred against Israel.

“As long as the Palestinian people are denied their fundamental rights and aspirations, Malaysia will stand unflinchingly with them,” he said. “We will not relent in demanding an end to the injustice and dispossession that have plagued Palestine for generations.”

According to ministry spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, Rubio outlined the plan’s key points : halting Israel’s military campaign, releasing hostages, ensuring humanitarian aid flows into Gaza, and preventing annexation or forced displacement of Palestinians.

He praised Egypt’s “leading role” in regional peace efforts and called for deeper U.S.-Egypt coordination.

Abdelatty welcomed the U.S. initiative, calling Trump’s efforts “sincere,” but stressed Egypt’s conditions , which are that humanitarian aid must reach Gaza on a scale, Israeli forces must withdraw, and any attempt to annex the West Bank or displace Palestinians must be rejected.

He reiterated Cairo’s support for a two-state solution, arguing it remains the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The war in Gaza has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians since October 2023, according to Gaza’s health ministry , and displaced over 80% of the enclave’s population. Egypt has played a central role in ceasefire talks and aid delivery through the Rafah crossing, making its stance crucial to any international settlement.

The meeting , held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, gathered heads of state, senior European officials, and representatives from across the Middle East amid worsening concern over the humanitarian toll of Israel’s campaign.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez put forward two proposals: full UN membership for Palestine and immediate steps to halt the bloodshed.“Spain will adopt a plan with measures to halt the genocide in Gaza ,” he said. “History will judge those who perpetrated this barbarity or remained silent. Let us side with rationality, with diplomacy.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the EU’s financial backing for Palestinian institutions.“Europe has been the lifeline of the Palestinian Authority, providing 1.6 billion euros. We will set up a dedicated instrument for Gaza's reconstruction and coordinate with other donors to relaunch the Palestinian economy,” she said.

From the Middle East , Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi warned that the conflict threatens the region far beyond Gaza.“Israel's military campaign targeted several countries, including Qatar, where an attack on Doha killed six civilians and violated international law. We hold the Israeli government fully responsible,” he told the gathering.

The UAE also weighed in, with Minister of State Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar urging a renewed push for Palestinian statehood. He called for a “clear political horizon and binding roadmap for an independent Palestinian state.”

The remarks came as several Western nations — including the UK, France, Canada, and Australia — confirmed they will formally recognise the State of Palestine.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the move, insisting it would endanger Israel’s survival and “reward terrorism.”

The mounting international response comes against a backdrop of severe civilian harm in Gaza. According to Palestinian health authorities , more than 60,000 people have died in the conflict, including a significant portion who are women, children, or the elderly.

Meanwhile, a new report by a UN Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, charging that official statements and ground operations show intent to inflict life-threatening conditions on civilians. Israel has rejected the report as biased.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly opposed recent recognitions of Palestinian statehood. He insists that recognising such a state now would risk Israel’s survival and constitute a reward for terrorism. These recognitions, meanwhile, are seen by many international actors as a symbolic but crucial step to signal shifting norms.

The ongoing debates at UNGA focus on the need for a ceasefire, reconstruction aid, inclusion in governance (excluding Hamas), and setting the conditions for a viable, independent Palestinian state.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was among the activists on board the charity ship that attempted to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the activists had intended to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and later deliver a symbolic amount of aid to the region.

Now, a fresh group of activists called the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is attempting to break through Israel's blockade once more in order to bring aid to Gaza.

They argue Israel's blockade is an "illegal siege on Gaza" as it breaches the 4th Geneva Convention against 'collective punishment' of civilians and the San Remo Manual (1994).

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for the past 18 years. Since October 2023, it has further tightened restrictions, limiting the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) recently stated that Gaza is already experiencing the worst-case scenario of famine. The IPC called for immediate action to end the violence and allow for “unimpeded, large-scale, life-saving humanitarian response” to prevent “catastrophic human suffering”.

However, Israeli officials argue that the blockade is necessary to prevent aid from reaching Hamas. They have labelled the flotilla activists as “terrorists”.

The GSF, made up of dozens of boats and hundreds of activists from 44 countries, left Barcelona, Spain, on September 1. They expect to reach Gaza by mid-September.

In a joint statement released on Tuesday by South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the ministers stressed that the flotilla’s mission aligns with the urgent humanitarian needs of Palestinians and the broader goal of peace in the region.

The GSF, consisting of dozens of boats and hundreds of activists from 44 countries, departed from Barcelona, Spain, on September 1 and is expected to reach Gaza in mid-September. Organisers say the effort is aimed at breaking Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip to deliver food, medicine, and other aid.

The joint statement called on all parties to respect international law and refrain from any unlawful or violent acts against the flotilla. It warned that violations, including attacks in international waters or illegal detentions, would be met with accountability.

“Both objectives, peace and humanitarian aid delivery, together with the respect of international law, including humanitarian law, are shared by our governments,” the statement read.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a coordinated, nonviolent fleet of small vessels sailing from Mediterranean ports in a bid to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. It unites a diverse coalition of international activists, including participants from earlier land and sea initiatives such as the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, and the Global Movement to Gaza.

The flotilla is described as the largest maritime mission of its kind, with delegates from 44 countries forming the crew. Among those taking part is climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The small vessels are carrying humanitarian supplies, including rice, biscuits, and milk powder, which are crucial, especially at a time when international agencies have reported clear signs of famine in Gaza.

Activist Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri said the initiative demonstrates solidarity with civilians in Gaza.

“We are preparing the humanitarian aid. We are bringing on the ships to Gaza to break the siege and feed our children , our brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip,” he said.

“This is a mission that we are going to go together. We are going to go as one strong power.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a coalition of activist groups, including the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, the Global Movement for Gaza, and the Sumud Nusantara.

The ships are expected to travel through Italy and Tunisia before reaching Gaza in mid-September.

Previous flotillas have attempted similar missions. Some succeeded in delivering aid, while others were intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, resulting in fatalities.

A flotilla is a group of vessels organised to transport essential supplies such as food and medicine to areas where conventional delivery routes are blocked or restricted.

Humanitarian flotillas usually operate under international maritime law and with the backing of global organisations.

Israel has repeatedly stated that “unauthorised attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.”

Officials have also previously criticised flotillas bound for Gaza, describing them as “selfie yachts of celebrities,” “stunts,” and “Instagram activism,” and alleging possible links to Hamas.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom intends to formally recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, but only if Israel has not taken “substantive steps” toward peace.

This also translates into Israel agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza, halting annexation plans, allowing aid delivery, and committing to a two‑state solution.

Starmer, on July 29, 2025, described Palestinian statehood as the “inalienable right” of the Palestinian people , emphasising that a ceasefire would pave the way toward recognition and a viable peace process.

The government presented this as a conditional, diplomatic tool to accelerate change rather than a symbolic gesture with no impact.

Domestically, more than 200 MPs, including around 60 Labour MPs, support immediate recognition and have argued that delaying undermines the UK’s stance on a two‑state solution. Civil society groups and a petition demanding statehood plus a ceasefire have also gained traction.

Israel's Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said, "Israel rejects the statement by the prime minister of the United Kingdom. The shift in the British government’s position at this time, following the French move and internal political pressures, constitutes a reward for Hamas and harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages."

Just a few days earlier, on July 24, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France would officially recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September.

He framed the decision as part of France’s historic dedication to a just, sustainable peace, emphasising that ending the war in Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid are priorities ahead of formal statehood recognition.

Macron’s move makes France the first major G7 nation to take this step, joining more than 140 UN member states that already recognise Palestine.

Just like the UK, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned France's move as rewarding terrorism and claimed it would incentivise militants.

The protesters used pots and pans to make noise and draw attention to the situation, calling on French authorities to take action.

Footage from the protest shows participants holding placards that read “Stop the Gaza genocide” and chanting slogans such as “Boycott Israel .” The protest took place at the Invalides metro station in Paris.

“The Americans are the main participants in this war, in this ongoing genocide. They have killed more than 500 Palestinians with their forces as they came seeking humanitarian aid. Today, the American statement saying that they will move on to another plan to recover Israeli prisoners in Gaza means an acceleration of this ongoing genocide,” Salah Hamouri, a Franco-Palestinian lawyer and member of the Emergency Palestine association, stated.

The protest comes after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would officially recognise the State of Palestine in September. If implemented, this would make France the first permanent member of the UN Security Council and the first G7 country to take such a step.

“Because of its position and its ability to influence international policy , but also because of its responsibility to sell arms and help the State of Israel continue to bomb the Gazans in the Gaza Strip,” Ali, one of the protesters, commented on France's role in the conflict. “So France has a great responsibility. Today, we hear talk of recognising the State of Palestine. For me, this is just a way of relieving the pressure felt domestically, but for me it's a responsibility in total,” he added.

According to the World Food Programme (WFP) , the hunger crisis in Gaza has reached critical levels. One-third of the population reportedly goes multiple days without food, and one in five people is facing starvation. The WFP also warns that nearly 100,000 women and children are experiencing severe acute malnutrition and are in urgent need of treatment.

Thousands of desperate residents swarmed the Zikim aid distribution centre in northern Gaza on Tuesday, July 22, searching for flour and other basic supplies amid a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

As food and essentials remain scarce due to ongoing conflict and blockades, some managed to carry home sacks of flour, while others returned empty-handed and exhausted.

Video footage from the area showed men and women trudging along dusty roads with heavy sacks slung over their shoulders. UN-marked vehicles were present at the scene, with children seen clambering onto their roofs in search of assistance or shelter.

Residents say the price of food has skyrocketed beyond reach. “This bag used to cost 25 shekels — now it’s 2,500,” said Ali Abdullah, balancing a sack of flour as he spoke. “That’s $764. I risked my life to get it.” He added that the flour would barely sustain his household of 18 for four days.

Others weren’t so lucky. Wael Abu al-Anzin said he showed up before dawn but left with nothing. “We didn’t take anything,” he said, visibly distraught. “I haven’t eaten in five days. I walked home wondering how I’d feed my children tonight.”

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 15 people , including four children, have died from famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours alone. The overall toll now stands at 101 famine-related deaths, 80 of them minors.

The crisis is hitting children the hardest. The Palestinian News Agency estimates that some 900,000 children in Gaza are going hungry, with 70,000 already diagnosed with malnutrition.

This deepening crisis unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing military operations in the region. The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led attack on Israel killed 1,139 people and took over 200 hostages. Israel launched a large-scale response that continues to this day.

Since the outbreak of war, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports that 59,106 people have been killed and over 142,000 injured in Gaza. A temporary truce and prisoner exchange brought a brief pause in March, but fighting resumed on the 18th of that month and has not stopped since.

As of late April, over 726,000 Sudanese refugees have entered Chad’s eastern provinces, including Wadi Fira and East Ennedi, straining resources and exposing vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls to exploitation, abuse, and food insecurity, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Chad situation report .

Lake Chad province in the west hosts over 268,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), uprooted by armed violence and flooding. Across the regions, access to healthcare, clean water , shelter, and basic protection is deteriorating.

The situation has worsened since the suspension of U.S. funding from USAID and the Bureau of Population, Refugees , and Migration (PRM) support that had sustained much of the lifesaving response.

The report also reveals that the funding halt has forced the closure of maternity wards, suspended mobile clinics, and disrupted the delivery of essential reproductive health supplies to over 80 health facilities.

Despite escalating needs, UNFPA has received less than $1 million of the $27 million it urgently requires for 2025.

In April 2025 alone, the UNFPA undertook the following;

UNFPA is coordinating with partners across Chad to maintain operations, including safety audits in IDP camps, GBV case management, and youth education on reproductive health.

Chad’s crisis is no longer looming, it is here, escalating, and underfunded.

The cost of inaction will be measured in lives lost, dignity denied, and futures cut short.

Sudanese officials and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday, June 3, exchanged blame over an attack on a humanitarian convoy operated by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF in Al-Koma, North Darfur.

According to Sudan Tribune , Ibrahim Khater, Director General of the North Darfur Ministry of Health, said the RSF forces set fire to trucks carrying aid.

"The army has no interest in burning aid or targeting humanitarian convoys. What happened is a crime committed by the militia to choke the residents of El Fasher,” Khater said.

He added that the RSF had blocked the convoy for over 10 days before the attack.

In contrast, the RSF’s humanitarian wing, the Sudanese Agency for Relief and Humanitarian Operations (SARHO), blamed the Sudanese army, accusing it of bombing the convoy with warplanes where the strike killed five WFP workers, injured four others, and destroyed nine trucks.

The RSF called the attack “a blatant breach of international humanitarian law,” claiming it reflects a broader pattern of targeting aid workers.

Darfur regional governor Minni Arko Minawi also blamed the RSF. He said the attack came after convoy officials refused to change course or offload supplies.

“As a result, a number of aid workers were killed, and the militia looted the remaining trucks,” Minawi said. He called the attack a “terrorist act” and accused the RSF of using the army’s strikes as cover to deflect blame.

The Sudanese government in a statement condemned the incident, calling it a deliberate obstruction of humanitarian operations.

This proposal represents a significant evolution from previous Western strategies, which have primarily focused on arming Ukraine without direct troop deployments.

A bloc of countries across Northern, Central, and Southern Europe has expressed willingness to participate.

Nordic States like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway have signalled a strong commitment, aligned with their broader pro-NATO security stance. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, all of which share borders with Russia or Belarus, also see troop participation as a critical component of regional defence.

Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have long been among Ukraine’s staunchest allies. Additionally, Portugal and Italy have shown openness, although domestic political dynamics could influence their final decisions.

Germany, however, remains non-committal. Despite being one of Ukraine’s top arms donors, Berlin is wary of direct troop involvement. Hungary, led by Viktor Orbán, continues to pursue a more Russia-friendly policy , while Neutral countries like Ireland, Austria, and Switzerland are unlikely to join due to constitutional and historical constraints.

Eastern and Southeastern European countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, and the Balkans are similarly absent from the current plan, either undecided or reluctant.

Although this seems like a good start for Ukraine, Russia on Sunday, May 25, launched the largest aerial attack on the former.

This attack comes after pressure from the USA on Russia to end the 3-year-long invasion of Ukraine.

US President called Putin "absolutely crazy" after the attack killed at least 13 people.

“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” the US president wrote on his Truth platform.

What happens next?

Hamas has accused Israel of waging a "hunger war " in Gaza, where the risk of famine continues to grow amid preparations for a wider military offensive.

The remarks, made by senior Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim, came after Israel reportedly approved a military strategy that includes the long-term occupation of the Gaza Strip, according to an Israeli official.

The ongoing conflict , triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents at least once.

A two-month blockade, in place since early March, has significantly deepened the humanitarian crisis.

“There is no point in discussing ceasefire proposals while the hunger and extermination war persists in Gaza,” Naim told AFP.

The animals are caught in nets, butchered, and cooked with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and local spices - one of the few ingredients still found in the empty markets.

“When the war started, there was food shortage. There is no food. So [turtle meat] is an alternative for other sources of protein,” Abdel Halim Qanan, a local fisherman, told the AFP.

Majida Qanan, a 61-year-old displaced resident, described the scarcity, saying, “Crossings are closed and markets are empty. There are only cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. I buy two small bags for 60 or 80 shekels.”

She explained that the turtles, once caught, are shared among neighbours rather than sold for profit. “We distribute it to families, and everyone eats it and shares it. It is not for sale. We catch it and distribute it to those who are willing to eat it.”

For many Gazans, this practice is not entirely new. Abdel Halim Qanan recalls that turtle meat sustained his ancestors when they were displaced from Al-Jura, near Ashkelon, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. “Back then, they suffered from hunger and poverty, and they too consumed turtles,” he recalled.

Israel maintains that Hamas is diverting aid, a claim the militant group denies. Meanwhile, humanitarian corridors remain shut, and aid deliveries have stalled, leaving civilians increasingly cut off from vital resources.

The campaign, targeting migrants from West African nations such as Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Guinea, has sparked outrage across the region.

In Rosso, a Senegalese city bordering Mauritania, deported migrants have shared chilling testimonies of abuse at the hands of Mauritanian authorities. Many describe beatings, arbitrary detentions, and dire conditions in overcrowded detention facilities.

“They beat us up, they took us to prison without telling us anything. After that, they threw us all out at the border," Ismaila Bangoura, a Guinean carpenter who had been working in Mauritania, told the AFP.

Ramatoulaye Camara, another Guinean citizen, described the grim realities of imprisonment in Mauritania. “Currently in Mauritania, it’s not good. We suffered a lot. I was in prison for 10 days, with no food, no help. I am pregnant, and I was there with my daughter. The police tortured the boys, they even tortured me. They took my money, my phone—everything. We endured a lot of suffering,” she said.

Adding that “More than 500-600 people were locked in a cage, with no food and unbearable heat. The Mauritanian police hit me. I don’t even know why—whether it was because of the papers, the residence permit, or something else. They just said, ‘You are leaving our country.’”

Bangoura further lamented that several deportees were left in dire health conditions, suffering from injuries inflicted during their detention. “It’s really deplorable,” said Bangoura. “They beat me up, and I have gastritis. They hit me in the chest, and now I can barely breathe. I can’t even run. I called my sister to send me money just so I could buy some medicine .”

Local humanitarian organizations in Rosso are struggling to assist the growing number of traumatized deportees. Mbaye Diop, President of the local Red Cross committee, confirmed that many of those arriving show visible signs of abuse. “Sometimes we receive people who have been expelled, and you can see the after-effects of physical violence on their bodies. Some even lose their minds upon arrival. We do our best to assist them, but the situation is overwhelming,” said Diop.

Meanwhile, Mauritanian authorities are yet to respond to the allegations.

Zimbabwe’s Health Minister has sounded the alarm over a growing crisis in the country’s healthcare system following significant reductions in aid from the United States .

The cuts, which have impacted key health programs including HIV/AIDS treatment, maternal and child health services, and disease surveillance efforts, have left what the minister described as a "huge gap" in both funding and service delivery.

Speaking at a press briefing in Harare, Health Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora said the funding shortfall has already begun to strain hospitals and clinics across the country, many of which relied heavily on US-backed initiatives to maintain basic service levels.

"Yes, the gap that has been created is huge because we are talking of between 300 and 400 million US dollars and we are working towards covering that gap gradually. It's not like it's today we need 300 million, but up to the end of the year. So we cover it as we go," he said.

Banks are now struggling to get money, leading to dire effects on many people and businesses in the country which depend on the US dollars to survive, local reports say.

The US has been sending money to Zimbabwe to help with food, health, business, and government programs.

Since 1980, it has given more than 3.5 billion dollars. Every year, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) provided over 300 million dollars. Zimbabwe's banks also depended on these funds, with about 10% of bank deposits coming from international aid.

But on January 20, US President Donald Trump signed an order cutting most foreign aid, a decision that has caused panic in Zimbabwe’s financial system.

Banks use foreign money for trade, loans, and reserves. Without enough US dollars, banks may not have enough cash for customers to withdraw. They may also stop giving out loans, which could slow down business and trade.

Economic analyst Kudzanai Sharara warns that with banks struggling, businesses will find it harder to borrow money, making life even more difficult for ordinary people.

Trade and debt payments could also be affected, adding to Zimbabwe’s economic troubles.

Zimbabwe has used the US dollar for years to keep its economy stable.

In the late 2000s, hyperinflation made the local currency almost worthless, forcing people to rely on US dollars instead. Now, with US aid drying up, the country faces another tough financial challenge.

Israel has introduced new conditions for advancing to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, demanding the complete demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the removal of Hamas from the territory. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar emphasised that Israel "will not accept the continued presence of Hamas or any other terrorist groups" in Gaza.

These stipulations were not part of the original ceasefire agreement, which primarily focused on the exchange of hostages and prisoners, increased humanitarian aid, and a partial Israeli troop withdrawal.

The second phase of the truce aims to secure the release of Israeli hostages and address conditions for a potential full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

The ceasefire, initiated on January 19, 2025, has faced challenges, with negotiations for its extension encountering obstacles. Israel has accused Hamas of misusing humanitarian aid and insists on the release of additional hostages as a prerequisite for progressing with the ceasefire.

Indonesia, Apple reach agreement to lift iPhone ban

Apple Inc. has reached an agreement with Indonesia to invest in the country, clearing the way for iPhone 16 sales to resume in Southeast Asia’s largest market. Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced the deal during a media briefing in Jakarta. According to news outlet Kompas , the ministry will now begin the process of issuing Apple a sales permit for its latest smartphone. This agreement ends a five-month standoff that began in October when Indonesia denied Apple a permit due to non-compliance with local manufacturing requirements for smartphones and tablets.

What to know about Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund

President Prabowo Subianto launched the investment management agency Daya Anagata Nusantara (Danantara) on February 24, 2025, to optimise government investments and drive economic growth. Danantara aims to transform Indonesia’s economy by building a global sovereign wealth fund (SWF) and supporting national development. It will initially manage Rp300 trillion (US$20 billion) reallocated from inefficient spending programmes, Antara reports.

President Prabowo launches Indonesia’s first bullion bank services

President Prabowo Subianto officially launched Indonesia’s first bullion bank services in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, highlighting it as a key step in driving economic growth. The services, provided by PT Pegadaian and Bank Syariah Indonesia, will offer gold deposit options and are expected to add IDR 245 trillion to the country's GDP while creating 1.8 million jobs. “Indonesia, which holds the sixth-largest gold reserves in the world, will, for the first time, have a bullion bank. We hope this will accelerate savings and increase our gold reserves,” he said, at the event as reported by Bernama .

$200 million aid for Palestine

Indonesia launched a $200 million humanitarian aid campaign on Wednesday to support Gaza’s rebuilding. A strong supporter of Palestine, Indonesia views Palestinian statehood as a constitutional mandate against colonialism. Titled “Indonesia for Palestine: Solidarity, Real Action, and New Hope,” the campaign is led by the Indonesian Ulema Council, National Alms Agency, and NGOs, with government support. “This is not just a constitutional and religious duty but also a humanitarian emergency,” Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta said, aiming to turn the initiative into a movement for humanitarian diplomacy, Arab News reported.

Sudan’s inflation rate eases to 145.14% in January

Sudan’s inflation rate continued its downward trajectory, falling to 145.14% in January, according to data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Sunday. This marks a significant decline from 187.83% in December 2024. According to Sudan Tribune , the latest figures indicate a sustained easing of inflation over recent months. In November, inflation stood at 198.22%, down from 211.48% in October and 215.52% in September. The trend suggests ongoing stabilization efforts in the country's economy, though inflation remains high. The inflation rate measures the percentage change in the general price level compared to the same month in the previous year, reflecting shifts in purchasing power and economic conditions.

UAE pledges additional $200m Sudan funding

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged an additional $200 million (AED 734 million) in humanitarian assistance to Sudan, raising its total contribution to $3.5 billion. As reported by ARN News , the announcement was made during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan held in Addis Ababa. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the significance of the conference, describing it as the first major humanitarian gathering for Sudan in 2025. The ministry highlighted that the event aims to pave the way for future international conferences focused on providing essential support to the Sudanese people.

UN appeals for $6 billion for Sudan crisis aid in 2025

The United Nations has launched a $6 billion appeal to provide critical aid to 26 million people affected by Sudan’s ongoing war and the millions fleeing dire conditions. Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The war has displaced 12 million people, with 3.5 million seeking refuge abroad, according to OCHA and UNHCR, Arab News reports.

AU calls for immediate ceasefire amid worsening Sudan crisis

The African Union (AU) has urged Sudan’s warring factions to enforce an immediate ceasefire and initiate a political transition amid an escalating humanitarian crisis, AU Commissioner Bankole Adeoye said at the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, calling Sudan’s war the worst humanitarian crisis in Africa and beyond, Adeoye condemned violations, particularly against women and children. The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has killed over 28,700 people and displaced 14 million. Despite Sudan's AU suspension since 2021, Adeoye emphasized that the crisis remains a priority for the AU and global peace efforts, News.AZ reported.

RSF-backed parallel government plans to acquire warplanes

Al-Hadi Idris, a key figure in forming a parallel government in RSF-controlled areas, announced plans to acquire warplanes and weapons to “defend citizens.” The signing of the political charter, initially set for Tuesday, February 18, in Nairobi, has been postponed to Wednesday, February 19, to accommodate more signatories, with constitutional arrangements and government formation to follow. Idris stated the new government aims to create a unified army from various factions, including the RSF, to protect against air and land attacks. Sudan Tribune reports that it will rely on self-sustained resources, opening border crossings and airspace, while welcoming international support. Regarding financial pledges, the UAE committed $200 million, Ethiopia $15 million, and Kenya $1 million for humanitarian aid, earmarked specifically for the peace government.

As the largest single donor funding global aid initiative, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plays a critical role in supporting vulnerable populations.

If USAID funding were paused for a full year, the economic shock would exceed 1% of Gross National Income (GNI) in 23 countries, with eight experiencing losses of 3% or more.

Among the 26 poorest countries, eight—South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia—rely on USAID for over 20% of their assistance. The freeze left these nations struggling to sustain vital programs .

A week into the pause, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a waiver for lifesaving humanitarian aid and medications. However, the damage had already begun.

The impact extended beyond budget cuts. The Trump administration initiated the closure of USAID offices and programs worldwide, severely affecting efforts to combat HIV, polio, mpox, and bird flu.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the freeze on tens of billions of dollars in foreign aid disrupted HIV treatments and health services across 50 countries. Clinics closed, and health workers were placed on leave.

The consequences of the aid freeze have rippled across the globe, threatening lives, livelihoods, and progress in public health and education.

African countries most impacted by USAID suspension

Among the most affected are South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Liberia, Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia - countries that rely heavily on U.S. assistance for humanitarian relief, healthcare, and economic stability.

The U.S. allocates approximately $60 billion each year to nonmilitary humanitarian and development aid - accounting for less than 1% of the federal budget yet surpassing contributions from any other nation.

“A chaotic, unexplained, and abrupt pause with no guidance has left all our partners around the world high and dry and America looking like a severely unreliable actor to do business with,” a USAID official told ProPublica .

The Centre for Global Support indicates that if USAID's funding freeze were to last a year, 23 economies - 16 low-income countries (LICs) and seven lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) - would experience an economic shock of at least 1 percent. Among them, eight nations would suffer a severe impact of 3 percent or more: South Sudan (9 percent), Somalia (9 percent), Afghanistan (7 percent), Liberia (4 percent), Syria (5 percent), the Central African Republic (4 percent), Yemen (4 percent), and Micronesia (3 percent).

South Sudan

South Sudan, one of the world’s youngest nations, faces severe food insecurity and ongoing conflict, making it one of the most aid-dependent countries globally. USAID has been a major provider of emergency food assistance, health services, and peacekeeping efforts.

With the funding freeze, millions are at risk of malnutrition and disease outbreaks, while peace and stability efforts may suffer setbacks.

“I’ve been an infectious disease doctor for 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything that scares me as much as this,” said Dr. Jennifer Furin , a Harvard Medical School physician who received a stop-work order for a program designing treatment plans for people with the most drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis.

Somalia

Somalia, long plagued by terrorism, political instability, and food shortages, relies on USAID for humanitarian aid and famine prevention. The funding halt could worsen an already dire situation, where millions face starvation due to prolonged droughts and ongoing conflict with extremist groups. USAID-backed vaccination and nutrition programs could also be in jeopardy. Amongst others, “through over 450 quick-impact activities worth over $38 million, USAID is helping Somalis demonstrate the benefits of political reconciliation,” a report by the USAID read.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The DRC has endured decades of conflict, poverty, and weak governance, making it one of Africa’s most fragile states. USAID funding has supported healthcare services, refugee assistance, and development projects. Without this aid, displacement camps housing millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) could see a collapse in essential services. The halt could also disrupt efforts to contain disease outbreaks, including Ebola. The U.S. Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which remains closed until further notice, issued a security alert on Tuesday advising U.S. citizens in Kinshasa to "shelter in place" amid ongoing protests. The embassy also urged citizens to "depart safely while commercial travel options remain available," CNN reports .

Liberia

Liberia, still recovering from the devastating Ebola crisis and years of civil war, depends on USAID primarily for healthcare infrastructure and disease control. The country’s health system is weak, and USAID has played a key role in providing medical supplies, training healthcare workers, and funding immunisation programs. The withdrawal of U.S. support could lead to a surge in preventable diseases and a collapse in maternal and child health services. USAID spearheaded the U.S. government’s international response to the Ebola outbreak, ultimately bringing the number of cases to zero. In total, the virus infected over 28,600 people and claimed 11,300 lives.

 Sudan

Sudan is grappling with armed conflicts and a fragile transition to civilian rule, and USAID has been a critical source of emergency food aid and development assistance. For the past 21 months, USAID and State Department staff have worked to reopen aid routes. Despite slow progress, American-supported convoys were finally beginning to reach some of the most severely affected areas. The suspension of funding will increase the risk of famine, especially in conflict-affected regions like Darfur, while also weakening governance and civil society initiatives aimed at stabilising the country.

Uganda

Uganda is one of the few African nations where USAID has heavily invested in population and reproductive health programs. The funding freeze could result in reduced access to contraceptives, family planning, and maternal healthcare, affecting millions of women and children. Additionally, HIV/AIDS programs that depend on U.S. support may see disruptions, reversing years of progress. Flavia Kyomukama, from the National Forum of People Living with HIV/AIDS Networks Uganda (NAFOPHANU), expressed shock over Donald Trump's decision. "We are still struggling to process what has happened - it’s incredibly difficult to comprehend," she said . "There was a memorandum of support between our countries, a clear roadmap toward zero infections, and yet this decision was made in a single day."

 Ethiopia

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, has been dealing with a devastating civil war, widespread hunger, and political instability. USAID has been one of the largest donors in Ethiopia, supporting food security, disaster relief, and healthcare. The aid freeze could worsen the humanitarian crisis, with millions at risk of starvation and displacement, particularly in the conflict-ridden Tigray region. “The pause of U.S. foreign assistance on Ethiopia will affect many areas of development; however, its impact on Ethiopia’s national HIV response is particularly severe,” an update by the UNAIDS read .

Kuwait set to stage a strong rebound

Finally, Kuwait is on the brink of a robust economic rebound, shifting from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one as part of its long-term development strategy. The forecast indicates significant GDP growth of 3.3% this year, following a 2.7% contraction in 2024.

The United Nations has reported a staggering increase in the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Haiti, with the figure now surpassing one million. This marks a threefold increase in displacement over the past year, driven primarily by escalating gang violence and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Haiti has been grappling with severe gang violence, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 has led to a power vacuum, exacerbating the violence and instability. Armed groups now control large swathes of the city, making it difficult for humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

US finds no ‘Havana syndrome’ link to foreign powers

U.S. intelligence has found no evidence directly linking foreign powers to the mysterious "Havana syndrome" suffered by U.S. diplomats and personnel. A review by seven intelligence agencies concluded that it is very unlikely a foreign adversary is responsible for the reported injuries, which include headaches and cognitive issues. However, as highlighted by AP , two agencies suggested the possibility that a foreign power could have developed or deployed a weapon causing these symptoms, though they expressed low confidence in this assessment. The incidents first reported in Cuba in 2016 have prompted calls for further investigation, but officials have yet to identify a definitive cause. The Biden administration emphasised the need for continued research and investigation into the matter.

On Monday, December 2, the United Nations chief Antonio Guterres described the situation in war-torn Gaza as "appalling and apocalyptic," cautioning that the conditions faced by Palestinians might constitute the "gravest international crimes." Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed delivered these statements on his behalf at a Cairo conference focused on boosting humanitarian aid. The UN Secretary-General called on the international community to "build a foundation for sustainable peace in Gaza and across the Middle East."

WFP and US provide crucial aid to over 1 million crisis-affected people in Burkina Faso

Through significant funding from the United States, the WFP has delivered essential aid to more than one million people in 2024. The US government contributed $124 million to support the WFP’s operations in Burkina Faso, accounting for 70% of the agency’s total funding in the country, according to a report released on October 22.

The UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), which is managed by the WFP, has been instrumental in reaching isolated communities. Between January and September 2024, UNHAS transported nearly 15,000 humanitarian workers and delivered over 500 tonnes of relief supplies.

“This unwavering support has been instrumental in enabling WFP to reach populations in need in Burkina Faso’s hard-to-reach locations,” said Sory Ouane, WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso is facing a severe food crisis. Recent data from the "Cadre Harmonisé" Food Security analysis reveals that approximately 2.7 million people in the country required urgent food assistance during the June to August lean season.

Ouane acknowledged the progress made but highlighted the ongoing challenges. “With the continued support of our partners, including BHA, we can ensure that the most vulnerable – particularly displaced women and children – receive the assistance they need to survive and rebuild their lives,” he added.

The humanitarian efforts come at a crucial time for Burkina Faso, which has been grappling with political instability, security challenges, and humanitarian needs. Following military coups in 2022, the country has struggled to maintain control over vast regions. More than half of Burkina Faso is reportedly under the influence of jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Earlier this month, tens of thousands of Burkinabe were reported to have fled to northern Ivory Coast to escape violence from extremist attacks and military abuses.

During her visit, Mohammed met with Sudanese officials, including the Prime Minister and other high-ranking government representatives, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the UN and Sudan.

The talks focused on addressing humanitarian challenges.

Mohammed also engaged with civil society organisations, women's groups, and youth representatives to understand their perspectives on the country's challenges and opportunities.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Thousands of displaced people fled to neighbouring Chad, adding pressure to the impoverished country.

During her visit, she announced an additional $60 million in humanitarian aid to help alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people.

The newly announced $60 million in aid will be provided through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and will focus on addressing immediate needs such as food, water, shelter, and other essential services.

This funding comes in addition to the $105 million previously committed by the United States to support Haiti's humanitarian efforts.

Haiti has been struggling with severe challenges, including widespread gang violence, political instability, and a dire humanitarian situation.

The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 exacerbated the country's turmoil, leading to increased gang control over large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The violence has displaced approximately 580,000 people, with over half of them being children, and has left 4 million people facing food insecurity.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield's visit also included meetings with the Kenyan police force, which is leading a UN-backed security mission in Haiti. This mission aims to support the Haitian National Police in curbing gang violence and restoring order.

The Kenyan police have recently begun patrolling parts of Port-au-Prince, marking a crucial step in stabilising the region.

The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced on Thursday, July 18, nearly $203 million in additional humanitarian assistance to Sudan.

However, she cautioned that the funds are not a "panacea" and called on other nations to honour their financial commitments to what she described as "the world’s worst humanitarian crisis."

World leaders committed over $2.1 billion in humanitarian aid for Sudan at a donors conference in Paris in April. Yet, US envoy Thomas-Greenfield revealed that only about a quarter of the promised funds have been received three months later.

"Three months after the April 15th pledging conference in Paris, only two-thirds of the pledges have been dispersed and only about a quarter of the response has been funded. All the while, the Adre border crossing, one of the most important in terms of humanitarian aid flow, continues to be blocked by the SAF. This obstruction is completely unacceptable," Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated.

Sudan plunged into chaos in April 2023 when tensions between the country’s military and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces erupted into open conflict in Khartoum. The devastating conflict has since spread, particularly affecting western Darfur, resulting in the deaths of more than 14,000 people and injuries to 33,000 others, according to the United Nations. It has also triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 11 million people forced to flee their homes.

The US Mission to the United Nations detailed that the $203 million in assistance includes over $178 million from the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and nearly $25 million through the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
