Home to nearly 4.8 billion people, Asia must meet energy demand projected to double by 2050 while advancing net zero commitments. Yet fossil fuels still account for around 80% of the region’s energy mix, and Asia produces nearly half of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The imbalance is especially stark in Southeast Asia, one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets .

Worse off in Southeast Asia

Although the subregion accounts for roughly half of global energy consumption growth, it attracted just 2% of global clean energy investment in 2023, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said at the Energy Asia 2025 conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Over the past decade, Southeast Asia’s overall energy demand has increased by more than 35%, while electricity demand has risen by over 60%. Electricity access rates improved by 12%, reflecting rapid urbanisation, industrial expansion and rising incomes.

Investment trends, however, show continued reliance on fossil fuels. They accounted for 60% of total energy investment in the past decade. Coal alone attracted $110 billion since 2015, expanding its share of the regional energy mix from 20% to 30%.

The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates Southeast Asia needs average annual investment of $210 billion to meet its net-zero targets. Achieving the 1.5°C climate goal would require an additional $2 trillion in annual public and private investment by 2030 across emerging and developing economies.

Not a lost cause

Still, there are remaining bright spots for Southeast Asia’s prospects of clean energy.

Clean energy investment in Southeast Asia rose to $47 billion in 2025 from $30 billion in 2015. Yet financing constraints remain. More than 75% of clean energy projects rely on commercial finance, rising above 85% in clean power, fuels and battery storage.

By contrast, grid infrastructure, storage and transmission depend heavily on public funding, which accounts for around 40% of capital.

“Despite wide disparities in economic development, resource endowments and market maturity, energy security is a common priority for the region,” the Paris-based International Energy Agency said in a report.

At the conference, Tengku Muhammad Taufik, president and group chief executive of Petronas, called for “region-specific strategies” and stronger cross-border cooperation to build resilient energy systems.

Southeast Asia is also strengthening its position in clean energy supply chains. In 2023, Viet Nam, Thailand and Malaysia ranked among the world’s largest solar photovoltaic manufacturers after China, reinforcing the region’s growing role in global panel production.

With its scale and growth trajectory, Asia “stands at the forefront of a transformative shift in energy landscapes,” the Global Energy Alliance said. Whether that momentum translates into concrete commitments at the 31st UN Climate Change Conference in November remains uncertain.

Africa is gaining global attention across fashion, food, music , tourism, and culture. The continent is increasingly visible in international markets, prompting renewed discussions about investment opportunities.

Some multinational brands have exited parts of Africa in recent years. However, this does not automatically mean the continent is unprofitable. It reflects a period of transition. Many of those companies were structured for mature Western markets with heavy infrastructure , import-dependent systems, and slower adaptation cycles. Africa’s current business environment rewards different models.

“Our MASSIVE Trade Deal with Japan has just launched,” Trump wrote on Truth Social , saying Japan was “officially, and financially, moving forward” with the first set of investments under its commitment.

Trump said the projects would “revitalise the industrial base”, create “hundreds of thousands of great American jobs”, and strengthen the U.S. national and economic security “like never before.”

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce , three major energy and industrial projects have been confirmed as part of the opening wave of investment.

Where Japan’s money will go

The largest is a $33 billion natural gas power facility near Portsmouth, Ohio. With a planned capacity of 9.2 gigawatts, the Portsmouth Powered Land project would rank among the biggest gas-fired generation developments in the world.

The plant will be operated by SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank. The project is designed to provide large-scale, dispatchable electricity to support industrial expansion and grid reliability.

Trump highlighted the Ohio development in his post, describing it as the largest gas power plant “in history” and crediting tariffs as central to unlocking projects of such scale.

In Texas, a separate $2.1 billion deepwater crude oil export terminal is planned in Brazoria County and the Gulf of America. The Texas GulfLink facility will be operated by Sentinel Midstream.

At full capacity, the terminal is expected to generate between $20 billion and $30 billion in annual US crude exports, potentially totalling $400 billion to $600 billion over 20 years, the Commerce Department said.

The third investment is an approximately $600 million high-pressure, high-temperature synthetic diamond grit facility in Georgia, to be operated by Element Six.

Diamond grit and powder are essential in semiconductor, automotive and oil and gas manufacturing, valued for their extreme hardness and durability. US officials say boosting domestic supply is strategically important for advanced manufacturing and national security .

Together, the projects signal Japan’s financial commitment to anchoring capital in key American energy and industrial sectors, as Washington and Tokyo — and Takaichi and Trump — deepen ties.

Ethiopia and Rwanda are redefining Africa’s air travel future with two major airport projects

On one side, Ethiopia is building what could become the largest airport in African history, a massive new hub designed to take pressure off Addis Ababa’s fast-growing air traffic. On the other hand, Rwanda is developing a modern international gateway aimed at strengthening its position in East African aviation, backed by a major global airline partner.

Together, these two projects are set to reshape how Africa connects within itself — and with the rest of the world.

Ethiopia’s Bishoftu is a mega hub in the making

Construction has officially begun on Bishoftu International Airport, a project aimed at addressing a significant issue: Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is expected to reach its capacity limit within two to three years.

Instead of trying to squeeze more out of an airport nearing its operational ceiling, Ethiopia is building a whole new one.

Bishoftu is being developed about 40–45 km southeast of Addis Ababa, and it’s not just an airport — it’s a full-blown $12.5 billion) “Airport City” project and everything about it is huge.

A scale Africa hasn’t seen before

The biggest headline is capacity. Bishoftu is designed to handle 110 million passengers annually, which is far beyond what any airport on the continent currently manages.

To put that in perspective, Africa’s busiest airport right now is O.R. Tambo International Airport in South Africa , and it handles over 20 million passengers. Bishoftu’s planned capacity completely changes the scale of what “Africa’s biggest airport” even means.

Built like a global transit powerhouse

The infrastructure is equally ambitious. The plan includes:

That aircraft parking capacity is more than quadruple what the existing Bole hub can handle.

The development includes a 38 km high-speed railway that will connect Bishoftu to Addis Ababa in just 25 minutes — a big deal for an airport located outside the capital.

Rwanda’s Bugesera is smaller, but very strategic

While Ethiopia is going for a continent-changing mega hub, Rwanda’s approach is different: high-standard growth with a clear strategic focus.

Rwanda is developing Bugesera International Airport , valued at about $2 billion, through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and Qatar Airways, which holds a 60% stake.

That partnership signals just how seriously Rwanda is treating this project — not only as national infrastructure, but as a major aviation investment.

Built to grow in phases

Bugesera is being developed with a step-by-step plan:

It’s not trying to be the biggest in the world — but it’s clearly being built to scale up over time.

Designed to strengthen Rwanda’s regional role

Bugesera is also tied directly to Rwanda’s aviation ambitions.

The airport is expected to boost RwandAir, Rwanda’s state carrier, supporting its expansion into new markets — including the USA and various African nations.

In other words, the airport isn’t just a new building. It’s meant to help Rwanda compete harder in international aviation.

Africa’s aviation hierarchy

Currently, the largest airports in Africa are led by O.R. Tambo (South Africa), Cairo International (Egypt), with roughly 17 million passengers, and Addis Ababa Bole (Ethiopia) with approximately 12 to 25 million passengers.

The new projects in Ethiopia and Rwanda will stand out by significantly raising the ceiling for African aviation.

Zimbabwe clears key hurdle for energy project

Zimbabwe’s energy sector has reached a major milestone following the successful completion of the Petroleum Production Sharing Agreement (PPSA) process for the Cabora Bassa Project, led by Invictus Energy. Formal execution of the agreement is expected in January 2026, providing a clear legal and fiscal framework to advance oil and gas exploration and development. Planned next steps include appraisal of the Mukuyu Gas Field and drilling of the Musuma-1 exploration well. The African Energy Chamber welcomed the development, noting that the Mukuyu Gas Field could hold up to 20 trillion cubic feet of gas. In August 2025, Qatar-based Al Mansour Holdings acquired a 19.9% stake in Invictus Energy and committed up to $500 million in conditional funding to support commercialisation.

South Africa steps up border patrols near Zimbabwe

South Africa has intensified efforts to curb cross-border smuggling along the Limpopo River near the Zimbabwean border by deploying armoured, all-terrain vehicles and additional personnel. The Border Management Authority confirmed that three specialised vehicles, including one capable of operating in water, are now patrolling the river corridor. Authorities say the area remains a hotspot for smuggling activities involving fuel, food, cigarettes, stolen vehicles and undocumented migrants.

China backs irrigation upgrades to boost Zimbabwe agriculture

China and Zimbabwe on December 19, signed letters of exchange on the upgrading and maintenance of China-aided irrigation schemes across the country. The project will renovate nine irrigation facilities in six provinces, aiming to strengthen agricultural productivity and climate resilience. Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said the initiative will support rural farmers, expand irrigated land and help climate-proof agriculture against droughts and erratic rainfall. Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding described the project as another milestone in bilateral cooperation focused on improving livelihoods and modernising agriculture.

Zimbabwe to roll out long-acting HIV prevention injection

Zimbabwe will begin administering the long-acting HIV prevention drug Lenacapavir to at least 46,500 people in early 2026, health authorities announced on December 15. The twice-yearly injectable, which provides six months of protection, will be rolled out initially in districts with high HIV incidence, including Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare. Officials said rollout sites have been prepared and staff trained, with the first shipment expected in January. The programme will prioritise adolescent girls, young women and other high-risk groups.

Zimbabwe return to AFCON stage against Egypt

Zimbabwe are preparing for their sixth Africa Cup of Nations appearance, returning to the tournament after missing the 2023 edition due to a FIFA suspension. They will face Egypt in their opening match at the Morocco-hosted tournament. Egypt, the most successful AFCON nation, holds a strong historical record against Zimbabwe, having won eight of their 14 meetings. Zimbabwe last defeated Egypt in 1994 during World Cup qualifying and will be seeking to make an impact on their return to continental competition.

What Dangote's $1 billion investment means for Zimbabwe

The investment agreement was formalised following a meeting in Harare with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and senior government officials on Wednesday, November 12.

The deal marks a revival of earlier efforts as Dangote had visited Zimbabwe in 2015 and explored similar plans in 2018, but those did not advance.

He said the investment package will span a cement plant, a coal mine (or coal supply arrangement), power-generation capacity and a petroleum product pipeline that aligns with Dangote Group’s broader plans for its oil-refining and downstream business.

"We have just signed an agreement between Zimbabwe and the Dangote Group to do various investments in various sectors, some of which are, of course, cement, power generation and a pipeline to bring petroleum products," Dangote said.

Why Zimbabwe now

Dangote commented that the current environment in Zimbabwe shows improved governance , transparency and policy stability compared with his visit a decade ago and cites those as reasons for proceeding now.

From the Zimbabwean side, government officials affirmed that attracting high-impact foreign direct investment is strategic to achieving the nation’s industrialisation goals. The deal aligns with the government’s “Vision 2030” ambition to become a modern, upper‐middle-income industrial economy .

Additionally, the project could generate thousands of jobs, both directly (in the cement plant, mine and power station) and indirectly (in logistics, services and local supply chains). It also helps Zimbabwe reduce its reliance on imports of cement, energy, and potentially petroleum products, thereby breaking supply bottlenecks.

For Zimbabwe, which has, over recent years, suffered from electricity shortages, high industrial import dependence and weak external investment flows, the Dangote commitment represents one of the largest privately-led foreign investment pledges in over a decade.

What Panama’s legal victory over Spain’s Sacyr means for investors

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) tribunal rejected Sacyr’s $2.3 billion claim over cost overruns in the Panama Canal expansion, one of the world ’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The case revolved around the Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) consortium, led by Sacyr alongside Italy’s Salini Impregilo and Belgium’s Jan de Nul, which accused the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) of design errors that inflated costs. The ICC, however, ruled that the contractors assumed those risks when signing the 2009 contract, confirming the ACP’s stance.

For investors, the ruling reinforces Panama’s reputation as a country where the rule of law prevails in complex international disputes — a reassuring sign in a region often criticised for legal uncertainty. It highlights the ACP’s professional management of the canal, a strategic asset that generates around 6% of the country’s GDP and continues to attract global trade and private investment.

The verdict also sets a precedent for other states engaged in large infrastructure projects: it shows that governments can successfully defend themselves against corporate claims when contracts are clear and institutions remain firm.

For Sacyr, the loss represents not only a financial setback but also reputational damage in future tenders. For Panama, it consolidates its image as a dependable and sovereign player in global infrastructure and a reminder to investors that the canal remains a stable, well-governed engine of trade.

65 years on – is Nigeria a failed state?

Economy under strain

Nigeria’s economic reforms, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, were intended to stabilise public finances and attract investment. Instead, they have fueled hardship. Inflation hit 34.2% in 2024, the highest in 28 years, while food inflation surged to 40.7% ( National Bureau of Statistics, 2024 ). With one in two Nigerians now living in multidimensional poverty, the country’s vast oil wealth has yet to translate into broad-based development.

Persistent insecurity

Armed groups remain a major destabilising force. Boko Haram, its offshoot ISWAP, and Ansaru continue to wage violence in northern Nigeria. The August 2025 arrest of Ansaru leaders Mahmud Muhammad Usman and Mahmud al-Nigeri was hailed as a turning point, but experts caution that extremist networks are resilient and prone to retaliatory attacks. Kidnapping-for-ransom and farmer-herder clashes further compound insecurity, undermining state authority in vast swathes of the country.

Democratic fragility

Since its return to civilian rule in 1999, Nigeria has struggled with electoral credibility. Nearly every presidential election has ended in legal disputes. Analysts warn that unless the 2027 general elections improve on the contested 2023 polls, Nigeria risks eroding public trust in democracy. Political scientists say this could embolden other West African regimes, already plagued by coups and authoritarian backsliding, to manipulate their own electoral processes.

Fragile social systems

Nigeria’s health and education systems expose the cost of weak governance. The country has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates, with 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births ( WHO, 2023 ). In education, millions of out-of-school children, estimated at 20 million by UNICEF, threaten the future of a youthful population.

Energy and infrastructure gap

Despite its oil reserves, Nigeria’s power sector is one of the least reliable in Africa. Over 85 million people, that is 43% of the population, lack access to grid electricity ( African Development Bank, 2024 ). Power generation averages 4,500 MW for a nation of 228 million, constraining industrialisation and job creation.

A nation at crossroads

Nigeria’s strategic weight is undeniable since it is Africa’s largest economy, the continent’s biggest democracy, and a key security partner to Western powers. Yet its internal crises, rising poverty, governance deficits, and insecurity raise questions about its long-term stability. With over 70% of Nigerians under 30, the country faces a stark choice: either to harness its demographic dividend for growth or allow frustration to fuel instability and unrest.

As Nigeria turns 65, it teeters between resilience and fragility. Whether it tips one way or the other will depend on the government’s ability to turn ambitious reforms into real improvements for ordinary citizens.

Colombia’s president condemns US airstrikes in the Caribbean

President Gustavo Petro has denounced recent US airstrikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean as an “act of tyranny,” warning that criminal proceedings could follow if Colombians were among the 17 reported dead. Speaking to the BBC in New York, Petro argued that stopping vessels does not require lethal force and accused Washington of humiliating South Americans. President Donald Trump defended the strikes as necessary to curb fentanyl smuggling, while Democratic lawmakers and UN experts have questioned their legality, calling them possible extrajudicial executions.

US delegation walks out of Petro’s UN speech

The United States delegation left the hall during Petro’s address at the United Nations, where he criticised the Trump administration for decertifying Colombia’s anti-narcotics record and for the Caribbean bombings. The Colombian leader accused Washington of spreading “lies” about drug seizures, stressing that his government extradited over 700 traffickers without resorting to missile strikes. The State Department responded briefly, saying its delegation’s actions “spoke for themselves”.

Peace talks with Clan del Golfo begin in Qatar

Colombia has opened peace negotiations with the Clan del Golfo, a powerful criminal group with roots in paramilitarism. The talks, held in Qatar, focus on disarmament in exchange for judicial benefits. Chief negotiator Álvaro Jiménez said the group’s main income now comes from illegal gold mining and stressed that leaders recognise they are at their “peak” and risk decline. The cartel, with 6,000–7,000 members, has already suffered major setbacks, including the arrest and extradition of former commander “Otoniel” in 2022.

Earthquake shakes Venezuela and Colombia

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck western Venezuela late Wednesday, September 24, rattling Colombian border cities including Cúcuta and Bucaramanga. The Colombian Geological Service confirmed the epicentre was in Mene Grande, Venezuela. No casualties or damages have been reported, and authorities ruled out tsunami risk for the Colombian coast. Residents across both countries reported alarm, though tremors are common in the region due to tectonic activity.

US investment in Colombia declines

Foreign direct investment (FDI) from the United States into Colombia has fallen for the second year in a row, reflecting strained relations and economic uncertainty. Central Bank figures show US investment dropped 15% in the first half of 2025, from US$2.66 billion to US$2.26 billion. While the United States remains Colombia’s top investor, accounting for 34.5% of inflows, the decline forms part of a broader 15.2% fall in total FDI last year, hitting mining, oil, and manufacturing sectors hardest.

Officials say the country now intends to turn those contracts into concrete projects, hoping to cement its role as a regional investment hub.

On Wednesday, Omar Rakash, director of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, met with investors who had signed agreements with African partners. The discussions focused on fast-tracking the transformation of contracts into on-the-ground projects across sectors such as energy, renewable fuels, food industries, and steel. Algeria alone accounted for more than $11 billion in signed deals, including $5 billion dedicated specifically to investment contracts.

Rakash stressed that Algeria’s objective goes beyond trade volumes. He said the government is determined to use these deals to deepen South-South cooperation and support balanced development across the continent. “These contracts must translate into real projects that contribute to Africa’s growth and integration,” he noted.

To facilitate this, the Investment Promotion Agency has launched a digital platform where investors can present projects, track progress, and access resources to meet regulatory requirements. Officials believe this will help bridge the gap between promises made at the trade fair and actual implementation on the ground.

Morocco emerges as Africa’s first host of a battery gigafactory in $5.6 billion China-backed deal

This facility will produce essential components for electric vehicle batteries, including cathodes and anodes. It aims to supply European automakers, Morocco’s local automotive sector, and the renewable energy storage markets across Africa and the Middle East.

The project is designed to significantly boost employment, with the initial development phase expected to generate 2,300 jobs. Across its full five-phase plan, the gigafactory is projected to create up to 10,000 jobs. The first phase alone is expected to result in 17,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2026 with an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which is expected to scale up to 100 GWh.

What this means

Unlike many other plants that rely on imported materials, this facility will manufacture the core materials required for battery production. By producing electrode materials such as cathodes and anodes on-site, the factory offers Morocco enhanced supply chain security and cost competitiveness. This vertical integration reduces reliance on foreign imports and strengthens Morocco’s autonomy in the high-tech manufacturing space .

Around 85% of the batteries produced at the site will be exported to the European Union. This helps reduce Europe’s dependence on Asian markets and shortens supply chains for the automotive sector. Morocco is shifting from being an assembly point to a key manufacturing hub serving one of the largest consumer markets globally.

The gigafactory’s development will follow a modular roadmap. It will commence with a first stage in 2026 and expand progressively as contracts and funding are secured. This approach is designed to allow flexibility and scalability in response to evolving energy market dynamics.

Local production of essential battery components will help Morocco reduce its import dependency. The project's vertical integration is expected to stabilise regional supply chains and strengthen Morocco's competitive position amid growing global demand for battery technology.

This initiative also marks a strategic shift for Africa. By building manufacturing capabilities on the continent, the project offers a model for transitioning from raw material exportation to high-value industrial production. It allows African countries to gain more economic value from their natural resources.

China-Morocco partnership

China remains Morocco’s third-largest global trading partner and its largest in Asia. In 2024, bilateral trade amounted to $9.04 billion, with China exporting $7.74 billion and importing $1.3 billion from Morocco, China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry reported.

The partnership reflects China's expanding economic involvement in Africa. It aligns with China’s strategy of combining infrastructure investment with industrial development in the clean energy sector.

For Morocco, the gigafactory represents a step forward into high-tech manufacturing, economic diversification, and a strengthened role as a strategic link between Africa, Asia, and Europe in the global green economy.

China's broader investment strategy in Africa

In May, China pledged to increase its investment across Africa.

Shen Xiang, Director of the West Asia and Africa Department at China’s Ministry of Commerce, stated , “African countries have seen steady economic development in recent years, with the overall business environment continuing to improve and the willingness of Chinese firms to invest in the continent significantly growing.”

According to Shen, annual direct investment from Chinese firms in Africa has exceeded $3 billion over the past five years, covering a variety of sectors.

The findings were presented during a hybrid forum titled “Derisking CSME Imports: Examining the Scope for Goods Market Fulfilment from Non-Traditional Sources,” hosted in collaboration with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) in St Kitts and Nevis.

Currently, nearly 70 percent of CARICOM’s final imported goods, valued at US$7.7 billion, come from the United States, making the region Washington’s third-largest import partner. While this reliance has long provided stability, it has also deepened CARICOM’s trade imbalance with the U.S., particularly as reciprocal tariffs drive up costs.

CPSO’s study revealed that the goods trade deficit between CARICOM and the United States grew by about US$200 million from 2022 to 2023, followed by an additional US$300 million in 2024.

Dr. Patrick Antoine, CEO and technical director of the CPSO, argued that rebalancing trade through non-traditional import sources could help buffer CARICOM economies from mounting U.S.-linked costs. Exploring markets in Asia, Latin America , and Africa would not only reduce dependence on a single partner but also strengthen food and goods security across the region.

“By diversifying supply chains, CARICOM states can cut costs, reduce vulnerabilities, and capture new opportunities for regional integration,” Antoine told the forum.

Projections indicate the deficit could expand by another US$500 million by 2025, even before factoring in tariff hikes.

Ethiopian media association condemns journalist abductions

The Ethiopian Media Professionals Association (EMPA) has called for accountability following the abduction of two journalists earlier this month. Abdulsemed Mohammed, host of Saturday Market on Ahadu FM 94.3, was held for 12 days, while Reporter senior editor Yonas Amare was detained for 10 days. EMPA described their disappearance as “an illegal act” and urged authorities to ensure justice. The group also stressed that abducting and harassing journalists undermines media freedom and the public’s right to information. Reports indicate that Amare was taken from his home in Sheger City on August 13 by masked individuals, while Mohammed was abducted in Addis Ababa on August 11.

Registration drive for 7.4 million students

The Amhara Regional State Education Bureau in northern Ethiopia has opened registration for the 2025/2026 academic year, aiming to enrol over 7.4 million students despite ongoing security challenges. Mulunesh Dessie (PhD), Coordinator of the Social Sector and Bureau Head, said registration will run from August 25 to September 5, with classes beginning September 16. She noted a steep decline in enrollment, with 4.4 million children missing school last year—the highest in Ethiopia, according to UNICEF. Persistent conflict, drought, floods, and instability have severely disrupted education in the region.

Colombia’s Vice President arrives in Addis Ababa

Colombian Vice President Francia Elena Márquez Mina has begun an official working visit to Ethiopia. She was welcomed at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba and State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye. Márquez is expected to hold discussions with senior Ethiopian officials during her stay.

Capital Market Authority proposes new investment directive

The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has issued a draft directive on collective investment schemes (CIS) for public review, one month after the launch of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange. The framework, based on the Capital Market Proclamation No. 1248/2021, outlines registration, operation, and supervision of pooled investment funds. ECMA said the directive aims to mobilise capital, promote financial innovation, and protect investors while ensuring market integrity and efficiency.

Ethiopia steps up campaign to reclaim looted heritage

Ethiopia has accelerated efforts to repatriate cultural artefacts looted during the colonial era, submitting a comprehensive inventory to UNESCO to block illegal auctions and strengthen international cooperation. Recent recoveries include “Tsehay,” Ethiopia’s first home-built aircraft, as well as relics such as the mantle of Ras Desta Damtew, the Ethiopian Order of the Star, and the armour of Emperor Tewodros II. The government is also preparing new UNESCO nominations, including Al-Nejashi Mosque, Ethiopian coffee traditions, and staple crop onset, highlighting cultural sustainability as a core national development pillar.

Trans-Africa tourism and trade drive

Ghana has launched the Trans-Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign in Accra, an initiative to remove visa barriers and make travel across Africa visa-free within five years. The campaign aims to boost tourism, ease trade, and tap into Africa’s $3.4 trillion economy. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah stressed that stronger African ties depend on lifting visa restrictions. He said that easier travel would raise tourist numbers and open new trade and business paths. The campaign’s goal is a borderless Africa in the next five years, creating a continent that is a single destination for tourists and companies. The aim is to tackle the current travel rules that fragment the market, the initiative aims to build a more connected and thriving Africa.

“Let’s not kid ourselves about investments,” Mahama warns

President John Dramani Mahama urged African leaders to adopt reforms to attract sustainable investment. Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama he noted that, “the world’s largest economy, which should be the driver of global trade and investments, has become more insular and transactional in its relationship with the rest of the world.” Adding, “Africa is open for business. We wish to partner with any nation in the world on a win-win basis. But let’s not kid ourselves, trade and investments will not come to Africa because we wish for it,” he cautioned. Mahama added , “That is why we must silence the guns and stop the fighting. That is why we must reform our economies and make them more stable and predictable. This is why we must reform our governance and make public service accountable and corruption-free.”

Ghana aims to become medical innovation hub

The Mahama administration has pledged to establish Ghana as West Africa’s centre for medical technology. Addressing the 2025 China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry Expo, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah outlined the plan, “Looking ahead, our vision is to position Ghana as the medical technology hub of West Africa. By attracting investment, encouraging innovation, and building world-class facilities here in Accra and across our regions, we can ensure Ghana serves as a centre of excellence for the entire sub-region,” MyJoyOnline quotes. The event drew policymakers, investors, and health experts from Africa and China. It was organised by the Health Community of West Africa Association (HCOWA) and the Ghana Health Service.

FBI commends Ghana in $100m cyber fraud case

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has praised Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) for its role in dismantling a $100 million fraud network involving Isaac Oduro Boateng, also known as Kofi Boat. According to the FBI, the CSA’s technical guidance, investigative support, and coordination efforts were instrumental in tracking digital footprints, preserving electronic evidence, and ensuring that the perpetrators were held accountable, MyJoyOnline reports.

Guterres hails Ghana as pillar of African stability

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described Ghana as “a fundamental pillar not only in the construction of West Africa but also of the African continent.” Speaking with President John Dramani Mahama on the sidelines of TICAD, Guterres said his work with ECOWAS deepened his appreciation of Ghana’s stabilising role in Africa. “I have to say that since my time in government, I have had close relations with ECOWAS in solving some challenges within the region. Since that time, I have always considered Ghana a fundamental pillar not only in the construction of West Africa but also of the African continent,” he stated. The discussion focused on partnerships for Africa’s peace and development, Citinewsroom reports.

Ntoudi Mouyelo, promoting the upcoming SportsBiz Africa Forum 2025 in Kigali, highlighted the event’s goal of connecting global investors with “investment-ready” African sports projects. He encouraged Qatari investors to explore Rwanda’s modern infrastructure and success stories firsthand. The forum, scheduled for September 9-10, follows renewed agreements between the Kigali International Financial Centre and the Qatar Financial Centre.

Roblox becomes inaccessible in Qatar

Roblox, the popular online gaming and creation platform, is no longer accessible in Qatar amid growing child safety concerns. While still downloadable from app stores, the platform now displays a “No Network” error on launch, and its web version is unreachable. Nonprofit monitoring tool Ooni detected access anomalies starting August 13. No official government confirmation has been issued, but social media discussions show mixed reactions, with some parents welcoming the potential ban as a way to protect children from online risks.

Stroke awareness and medication gaps

A study published in the Qatar Medical Journal reveals moderate stroke awareness and low medication adherence among high-risk patients in Qatar. Only half of the participants correctly understood that a stroke results from a blocked blood supply to the brain, and fewer than a third could identify a transient ischemic attack. While most recognised high blood pressure and smoking as key risks, awareness of factors like diabetes and obesity was lower. Researchers urge targeted public health campaigns, noting that improved education could significantly reduce stroke-related deaths in the country.

Bolivia’s bonds surge ahead of election

Bolivia’s international bonds have rallied strongly ahead of the August 17 presidential election, gaining over 30% since the start of 2025 and outperforming the 7% return in JPMorgan’s emerging markets bond index. Investor optimism is driven by hopes that a political shift could pave the way for economic reforms and an IMF program, amid the country’s worst economic crisis in four decades, with soaring inflation, dwindling reserves, and tough fiscal trade-offs.

Election front-runners signal political change

Right-wing candidate Jorge Quiroga, a former president, said on August 8 that Bolivia was set for “radical change” after 20 years of socialist rule. He trails centre-right business magnate Samuel Doria Medina in first-round polls, while the ruling Movement towards Socialism (MAS) — founded by former president Evo Morales — faces record-low support over its crisis management.

Indigenous support for MAS erodes

The MAS party is experiencing a sharp decline in backing from its traditional Aymara and Quechua base, as economic hardship and unmet social promises overshadow identity politics. Influencers and community voices say priorities have shifted toward jobs, education, and healthcare. Morales, elected in 2006 as Bolivia’s first Indigenous president, once symbolised empowerment, but corruption allegations and internal rifts have eroded that legacy.

Violence mars football match in La Paz

A 3-2 victory for The Strongest over Blooming at Hernando Siles Stadium was overshadowed by a serious incident involving supporters, who threw fireworks onto the pitch. Paraguayan forward Juan Godoy was struck, sustaining a first-degree burn and a testicular hematoma, prompting medical attention and ongoing monitoring.

Business leader calls for openness

Bolivian entrepreneur Marcelo Claure, Group Vice Chairman of Shein, urged renewed openness to global markets and greater economic opportunity ahead of the election. Claure expressed optimism that effective governance could unlock the country’s economic potential.

Small nation, big diplomatic power

Qatar, though small, has become a major diplomatic force, dubbed the “diplomatic capital of the world” by The Guardian ’s Nesrine Malik. Amid tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S., Qatar’s role as a mediator has grown, driven by its wealth from natural gas, independence from Saudi influence, and the global reach of Al Jazeera. Since the 1990s, strategic reforms and high-profile moves like hosting the 2022 World Cup have made Qatar a sought-after neutral broker, with multiple mediation requests in just one month.

Qatar Chamber and ICCI aim to boost trade and investment ties

Rwanda announced on Saturday, June 7, that it is withdrawing from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), accusing the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) of manipulating the bloc with support from some member states. The decision was made at the 26th ECCAS summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, attended by Rwandan Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente. Rwanda criticised the summit for denying it the rotating chairmanship and excluding it from the 2023 summit in Kinshasa under the DRC's leadership. He also cautioned about increased malaria risk, advising the elimination of mosquito breeding sites. The WHO urged countries to remain vigilant and continue risk-based COVID-19 management.

Rwanda eyes carbon credits to attract green investment

As Rwanda aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 , it is exploring using carbon credits as collateral to boost green investments. Companies like DelAgua Rwanda already generate tradable carbon credits, which could help manufacturers raise funds independently of banks, according to Country Director Monica Keza.

Rwanda is among African nations leading a record-breaking tourism boom

Matola coal terminal to boost capacity 50% with $80m Grindrod investment

South African firm Grindrod will invest $80 million over two years to expand the Matola Coal Terminal at Maputo Port from 8 million to 12 million tonnes annually. President Daniel Chapo, at the launch of new administrative facilities, emphasised prioritising rail over road to boost efficiency and regional competitiveness. The investment aims to create 800 direct jobs by 2027 and enhance sustainable development through integrated logistics.

Jihadist attacks in Mozambique as Total plans gas project restart

Islamic State-linked militants have renewed attacks in northern Mozambique, including deadly raids on military posts and a wildlife reserve, as TotalEnergies prepares to restart its major gas project. Analysts link the violence to recent announcements, including $4.7 billion in new funding from the US.

Mozambique keeps key interest rate steady at 18% in June

Mozambique’s benchmark interest rate for credit will remain at 18% in June, according to the Mozambican Banking Association (AMB). The rate has fallen steadily from 24.1% in January 2024, with a 0.5 percentage point cut in May and earlier in March. The AMB kept it steady at 19% in February and April. This decline follows reductions in the central bank’s monetary policy interest rate (MIMO rate), which dropped from 12.25% in January to 11.75% in March, reflecting continued low inflation expectations despite fiscal risks. Meanwhile, credit to the economy rose slightly in March to nearly 285 billion meticais (€3.99 billion), after a notable drop in February.

Over half of the €47.3 million in unpaid debt was owed to Portugal. Payment delays had been blamed on post-election unrest and budget shortfalls. The report warns of added fiscal pressure in 2025 due to residual obligations and debt management system limitations.

Chapo wants fewer trucks, more trains to the port of Maputo

Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo has called the growing use of road transport for coal and magnetite to the Matola Coal Terminal “unacceptable,” urging a return to boost efficiency and competitiveness. Speaking at the inauguration of Grindrod’s new office and the launch of an $80 million expansion, Chapo stressed that Matola’s infrastructure was built for rail. He also highlighted the $160 million container terminal project and the broader port expansion under the 25-year extension of the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) concession, which includes $600 million in planned investments. MPDC aims to modernise facilities, reduce logistics costs, and create new jobs, reinforcing Mozambique’s role as a logistics hub in southern Africa.

The scheme is expected to begin by late 2025 or early 2026 and will require a minimum investment of $500,000 in industries such as technology , agribusiness, energy or tourism.

The move will offer a faster path to citizenship compared to Argentina’s current rules, which require two years of permanent residency before applying.

Instead, the investment programme will give eligible applicants direct access to Argentine citizenship, according to Nomad Capitalist , a firm that advises international investors.

“The focus is on job-generating contributions, not real estate or donations,” Isabela Schrotke, a researcher at the firm said.

According to her, government is working on two legal decrees to ensure the programme is built on a solid foundation and can withstand legal challenges.

Supporters of the new programme say it comes at a time of major change in Argentina.

President Javier Milei, who took office in December 2023, has introduced tough reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s economy.

Inflation has started to slow, and Argentina has reported a budget surplus for the first time in years.

The citizenship opportunity will allow foreigners who have an Argentine passport to travel visa-free to 172 destinations and give them the right to live and work in other Mercosur nations, including Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.

However, the proposal has drawn some criticism.

Experts warn that Argentina’s political history and long distance from global business hubs may make it less attractive to some investors.

Some legal issues have also been raised, including the fact that citizens will be considered under local law , which could have tax or legal consequences depending on the person’s other nationality.

Brazil turns to China for green development support

Brazil is increasingly partnering with China to advance renewable energy and digital infrastructure. During President Lula’s recent state visit to China, he announced key agreements, including a $1 billion deal with Envision Group to produce sustainable aviation fuel and a partnership with Windey Energy to launch a renewable energy R&D centre. China also pledged $4.76 billion in additional investment. Lula highlighted the growing trade between the two nations, which has risen from $6.6 billion in 2003 to $160 billion today. As founding members of BRICS, Brazil and China continue to deepen their strategic ties.

Brazil renews tariffs and quotas on steel products

Brazil has renewed 25% tariffs on 19 steel products and extended the measure to four more, effective for another 12 months, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. The quota system on steel imports remains in place. Initially imposed in April 2023 to counter a surge of cheap steel, mainly from China, the tariffs exclude imports under trade agreements or special regimes.

Brazil mid-May consumer prices rise below expectations

Brazil’s consumer prices rose less than expected in mid-May, easing to 0.44%—below the 0.48% forecast—despite recent floods, IBGE reported. Annual inflation slowed to 3.70%, the lowest mid-month reading since October 2020, staying within the central bank’s target range. Food inflation was milder than feared, rising 0.26%, down from 0.61% in April. Analysts say the data support a continued rate-cutting cycle, although flood-related price pressures may still emerge in the coming months.

Argentina sends troops to secure crime-plagued border with Brazil

On May 26, 2025, Argentina launched Operation Guaçurarí , a six-month security campaign targeting a 25-km border stretch with Brazil plagued by drug trafficking and violence. The effort focuses on dismantling criminal networks, including Brazil’s PCC and Comando Vermelho gangs. The move follows a 400% rise in drug seizures and seven contract killings in 2023. Despite Brazil not being consulted, local mayors support the initiative. Federal forces will work with Misiones and Santa Catarina authorities, using drones and surveillance to monitor key routes. The operation is part of the wider Plan Roca military deployment across northern Argentina.

Brazil's budget missteps continue to unsettle investors

For the second time in six months, a Brazilian government plan to ease investor concerns backfired, sparking a market selloff and renewed doubts about President Lula’s commitment to fiscal discipline. A proposed tax hike on financial transactions, including a controversial 3.5% levy on offshore investments, triggered the backlash. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad quickly scrapped the offshore tax, denying any move toward capital controls. The episode revealed growing tension between markets and Lula’s administration, with investors questioning fiscal credibility despite a larger-than-expected budget freeze. Haddad, once seen as a stabilising force, moved ahead without central bank input, deepening the disconnect.

Speaking at the EU-Zimbabwe Business Forum in Harare, RBZ Deputy Governor Dr. Innocent Matshe emphasised that registered investments through the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) face no restrictions on repatriating profits, dividends, or disinvestment proceeds.

“This is a regulated, transparent system. Once an investment is registered, there are no obstacles in remitting profits, dividends, or disinvestment proceeds. Regulatory compliance is crucial for seamless operations in Zimbabwe’s financial landscape,” Herald Online quotes Dr. Matshe.

The assurance is in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s “Open for Business” policy , which has been in place since 2018. Zimbabwe has introduced a range of incentives, including tax breaks, duty exemptions, and capital allowances, to attract foreign capital and foster economic growth.

NMB Bank CEO Gerald Gore reinforced RBZ’s message, confirming that repatriations have been processed efficiently for registered investments. “As authorised dealers, we facilitate remittances on behalf of our clients, and the system has been working well,” Gore said.

However, the forum also highlighted challenges. Dr. Sibongile Moyo, Vice President of the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe, warned that unresolved legacy debts, particularly from previously blocked funds , continue to weigh heavily on the financial sector.

Eldric Ko, 51, founder of Premium Liquid Assets (PLASG), misappropriated approximately $12.67 million through a fake wine investment scheme launched with alleged accomplice Koo Han Jet, who remains at large after fleeing Singapore in 2011.

The fraudulent scheme, known as “En Primeur” (EP), falsely promised investors ownership of premium wines supposedly sourced from French suppliers. However, no such wines were ever procured. Instead, Ko and Koo funnelled investor funds through a shell company, Grand Millesimes Limited (GML), incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, with fake invoices to simulate transactions.

A report by Straits Times indicated that Ko laundered funds through a Swiss bank account and later into a third account in Singapore, deliberately layering transfers to avoid detection. Court documents revealed he kept S$8 million for personal use and distributed Koo’s share through underground channels and cash payments.

More than 240 police reports were filed from May 2011, leading to an investigation. Both men left Singapore that same month. Ko’s Swiss account was closed later that year, and he remained abroad until his arrest in May 2024 upon returning to Singapore. No restitution has been made.

Ko pleaded guilty to one count of criminal breach of trust involving over $10 million and two counts of dealing with criminal proceeds. Twelve other charges were considered in sentencing.

Nigeria unveils $500 million climate investment platform to drive green growth

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Nigerian Climate Investment Platform (NCIP) to mobilise up to $500 million for climate-resilient infrastructure, adaptation, and innovation projects nationwide. Jointly developed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), the platform was unveiled after a high-level stakeholder meeting in Abuja. Finance Minister Wale Edun highlighted NCIP as a strategic tool for inclusive growth, export competitiveness, and sectoral transformation. He praised the NSIA’s capacity to lead the initiative and urged Nigeria to tap into global climate finance to drive economic diversification and resilience.

Nigeria’s digital economy attracted $191 million in foreign direct investment in Q1 2024

The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s communications and digital economy sector attracted $191 million in foreign direct investment in Q1 2024—a 900% increase from $22 million in Q1 2023. Minister Bosun Tijani credited the surge to reforms under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, and a new $2 billion fund to roll out 90,000 km of fibre optic infrastructure by Q4 2025. He said these efforts are positioning Nigeria as a global digital economy leader.

Dangote Refinery pledges to stabilise and lower petrol prices in Nigeria

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has pledged to maintain stable petrol prices despite global crude oil fluctuations. In a statement on Monday, spokesperson Anthony Chiejiena said the 650,000 bpd refinery remains committed to easing fuel costs for Nigerians, with prices locally ranging between N910 and N930 per litre. The move aligns with President Tinubu’s recently approved Nigeria First Policy and aims to support the economy while ensuring affordable, high-quality fuel.

Cannes director says Nigeria needs more good fathers

Akinola Davies Jr., who made history as the first Nigerian director to compete at Cannes, lost his father at age two and says he's been "collecting father figures" ever since. His debut film, My Father’s Shadow , in the running for the Caméra d’Or, explores this theme against the backdrop of Nigeria’s 1993 military coup. Set in Lagos, the film follows a father and his two sons as the country’s hopes for democracy are crushed. Davies contrasts harsh, authoritarian figures like General Sani Abacha with a gentler, more nurturing father figure portrayed by Sope Dirisu. “This film is about accountability—how sons learn from their father's strengths and flaws,” Davies told AFP , adding that Nigeria, too, has long been searching for a true father figure to guide it.

ADC says APC’s misrule has brought Nigeria to its knees

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the ruling APC for Nigeria’s worsening economic decline since 2015. Speaking in Abuja, ADC’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Mani Ahmed, highlighted rising poverty—about five million Nigerians fall into poverty yearly despite the country’s resources. He called for competent leadership and good governance, saying ADC remains committed to driving meaningful change in Nigeria.

When Europe has nothing left, it will be reliant on Africa: George Forrest’s warning

This is part of a message from African agricultural titan George Forrest, who predicts that within three decades the continent will become the breadbasket of the world .

“When you look at the global backdrop and what happened with the war in Ukraine and, given my first-hand experience, I said to myself that Africa is too reliant on other countries, on Europe, on Asia and that Africa has the potential to feed the world,” Forrest said in an interview for Global South World.

Forrest, whose businesses cultivate tens of thousands of hectares of land in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has turned author for a new book called: Africa Can Feed the World. He says his experiences in the fertile, untapped landscapes of his homeland have convinced him that a tipping point, first towards self-sufficiency and then towards agri-exports, is far nearer than people realise.

Africa holds 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, according to the World Bank, yet contributes less than 10% of global agricultural output. This paradox is not due to poor soil or climate — in fact, regions such as the Guinea Savannah and the Congolese Plateau offer fertile soils, reliable rainfall, and abundant water reserves. Rather, the gap stems from decades of underinvestment in rural infrastructure, poor access to markets and finance, and minimal technological input.

Forrest points to the example of Brazil. Between the 1970s and early 2000s, Brazil transformed its Cerrado region - a once-dismissed savannah - into one of the world’s most productive agricultural zones. This was achieved through a combination of state research institutions, incentives for private sector investment, and the development of infrastructure like rural roads and silos. Today, Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of soybeans, beef, and poultry.

As climate change threatens traditional breadbaskets like the American Midwest, Australia, and parts of India due to extreme weather events and soil degradation, some parts of sub-Saharan Africa may be able to make up the deficit.

However, he is scathing about the attitude of external players, and Europe in particular. As European policymakers riding a nationalist populist wave seek to close borders and cut development funding, Forrest warns that they may one day regret treating Africa as a threat.

‘Broken ties’

“The day when Europe has nothing, it will be dependent on others. And it will depend on whom? That’s what I’m saying. That in 2050, if we are not careful, it’s Europe which will be migrating to Africa…. So we need to maintain the ties that we have broken. That is what I am asking. That Europe comes to its senses and considers Africa rather as a partner, not to exploit but for win-win relations.”

In particular, Forrest is critical of policies which prevent younger generations of Africans from travelling to Europe to study - a decision which pushes them towards Russia, China and India, where they will develop relationships and sympathies for the future. By 2050, Africa’s population is projected to exceed 2.5 billion people, with over 60% under the age of 25.

Forrest’s criticisms extend to the international justice system, which he sees as unfairly focused on Africa.

“When you look at cases around illicitly obtained assets, who gets prosecuted? Only Africans. What about the Middle East? Have we seen asset appropriation there? Did we prosecute people from China or elsewhere? No. Let’s be fair, we can’t have two standards, two tiers, let’s be evenhanded.”

Indeed, Forrest sees the fight against corruption waged upon Africa as being counterproductive, because it drives away the investment which is needed to improve the situation. Non-governmental organisations that come with lectures and impose standards bring nothing but drive away business investment, he claims.

“The more you have investors, the more you have promising projects. The more the government and the authorities are forced to keep rules and structures, the more you will have a better justice system because corruption will gradually disappear. It’s true that it is a curse, but let’s be realistic.”

Dare to dream

But for Forrest, everything comes back to agriculture, which has the potential both to supercharge African economies and remove the curse of hunger and poor nutrition from their populations.

The African Development Bank estimates that agriculture could be worth $1 trillion to the continent’s economy by 2030. But the scale of investment required is also significant - estimated at $80 billion per year.

While the scale of the ambition requires industrial methods, Forrest remains convinced that there can still be a place for smaller family farms. And he insists that increasing food production will not threaten the ecological marvels of the tropical forests of Congo or other nations.

“It’s not a question of replacing the forests. We don’t need to touch the forests. There’s plenty of available space, even in the Savannah.”

Forrest is an optimist, but also a pragmatist. He believes greater use of science and technology is essential to achieving his vision. His giant agri-food business GoCongo, uses extensive soil testing to determine which crops are best suited to each area. This choice needs to be informed by study, not habit, he states. As an example, he highlights French efforts to impose rice cultivation in the country to replace stocks lost after the demise of IndoChina, which were often poorly located and resulted in low yields.

But with science, human effort and natural bounty, Forrest is confident Africa’s detractors will be proved wrong and his 2050 vision will come to pass.

“In order to do something, first you need a dream. When you dream, you have a goal in mind. This is what you do to achieve it.”

This was contained in a report by the Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) reviewed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

The reforms align with the country’s State Ownership Policy Document, which aims to shift Egypt toward a private sector-led growth model.

It focuses on six main areas, monetary policy, competition, industrial development, investment climate, legal frameworks, and state ownership. Of the total, 64.6% targeted investment and industrial sector support. In 2024 alone, 321 reforms were implemented, according to Osama El-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and Head of IDSC, Daily News Egypt reports.

Key measures included a shift by the Central Bank of Egypt to a flexible inflation-targeting regime, expected to reduce inflation to 7% by 2026. This move, along with exchange rate flexibility, helped boost foreign direct investment to $46.1 billion in FY 2023/2024, with an additional $14.5 billion in portfolio inflows.

Efforts to enhance industrial output saw 134 reforms, contributing to a 14% increase in non-oil exports to $40.8 billion in 2024. Industrial zones secured 218 new project contracts worth over $5.1 billion.

Mexico’s Sheinbaum rejects Trump's offer to send troops to fight drug trafficking

On Saturday, May 3, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she had turned down an offer from U.S. President Donald Trump to send American troops to Mexico to fight drug trafficking because "sovereignty is not for sale." Sheinbaum's remarks were in response to enquiries over a May 2 Wall Street Journal article claiming that Trump was putting pressure on Mexico to permit further U.S. military engagement against drug cartels in order to fight trafficking across the shared border.

Migrant children face ongoing risks crossing Mexico

A joint report by Save the Children and Plan International, released Monday, May 5, highlights high levels of violence, exclusion, and uncertainty experienced by migrant children travelling through Mexico toward the United States. Based on 155 interviews conducted between November 2024 and February 2025, the study found that children fleeing violence in their home countries often encounter continued rights violations rather than receiving protection. Interviewees, aged 7 to 16, originated primarily from Mexico, Honduras, and Venezuela, with others from Colombia, Guatemala, Afghanistan, and Haiti.

Thousands of Venezuelan migrants stranded in southern Mexico

At least 3,000 Venezuelan nationals are currently stranded in Tapachula, a city near Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala. Under intense heat, large crowds have gathered at immigration offices seeking flights out of the area. Unlike earlier migration patterns aimed at reaching the United States, many are now attempting to return to Venezuela or leave Tapachula by any possible means. A lack of passports, documentation, and financial resources continues to hinder their departure. Tapachula, once a primary entry point for migrants from Central America, has seen a sharp increase in displaced individuals overwhelming local shelters and public spaces.

Unilever to invest $1.5 billion in Mexico to boost production

The plan, disclosed during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference, includes the creation of 1,200 jobs. The investment allocates 8 billion pesos ($408.3 million USD) to build a new factory in Nuevo León, northeastern Mexico, focused on beauty and personal care products.

Algeria-Mali Tensions Escalate Post-Drone Incident

Tensions between Algeria and Mali intensified after Algerian forces downed a Malian drone, leading to diplomatic expulsions and the closure of airspace between the two nations. According to The New Arab , observers note that this incident reflects deepening strategic disagreements and a failure of previous mediation efforts, particularly following Mali's withdrawal from a critical peace agreement with Algeria. As reported by various experts, Algeria's concerns over the security vacuum along its borders have been exacerbated by Mali's growing military alliances, including ties with Russian forces.

France Expels Algerian Diplomats Amid Bilateral Strain

In a significant diplomatic move, France expelled 12 Algerian diplomats and recalled its ambassador, amidst escalating tensions attributed to Algeria's condemnation of perceived internal interference by France. MENAFN reports that this action follows Algeria's earlier expulsion of French embassy staff, with both governments entangled in disputes over past grievances, military relations, and recent arrests involving Algerian officials. The deteriorating relationship persists despite prior attempts at dialogue between leaders from both nations.

Algeria Seeks Turkish Investment in Renewable Energy

Algeria has formally invited Turkey to invest in its renewable energy sector, aiming to enhance bilateral trade, which reached a record high of nearly $6 billion in 2024. As reported by Zawya , the two nations discussed ambitions to increase this figure to $10 billion, highlighting Turkey's significant role as a foreign investor in Algeria across various industries, including energy and textiles. The Algerian Foreign Minister expressed potential for increased cooperation in renewable energy projects, aligning with the global push for sustainable energy sources.

Mass Expulsions of Migrants from Algeria to Niger

Algerian authorities expelled over 1,000 migrants to northern Niger, prompting concerns from local NGOs regarding the treatment of these individuals. Reports indicate the migrants, from 17 different countries, were abandoned without food or water in harsh desert conditions. Organisations like Alarme Phone Sahara report that such deportations have intensified, raising alarm over humanitarian conditions and violations of international law, particularly concerning migrants with valid documentation, Info Migrants reports.

Algeria Enacts New Law on General Mobilisation

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over a cabinet meeting, during which a draft law on general mobilisation was adopted, guided by Article 99 of the Constitution. According to Constitution Net , this law outlines the procedures for mobilisation in response to national security threats, signifying a formal framework that includes prior declarations of a state of emergency or war. This legislative move reflects Algeria's strategic preparedness and aligns with constitutional stipulations regarding national defence.

Potential layoffs due to US tariffs

Following the announcement of a 32% tariff on Indonesian exports by the US, up to 50,000 Indonesian workers may face layoffs, prompting President Prabowo to instruct cabinet members to explore employment measures urgently. According to VN Express , this assessment was shared by Vice Chair of Indonesia’s National Economic Council, Mari Elka Pangestu, highlighting ongoing negotiations and various initiatives to mitigate impacts on the labour-intensive textile and shrimp processing industries.

Concerns over military role in governance

Amid concerns about Indonesia regressing to authoritarianism reminiscent of Suharto's regime, critics are alarmed at President Prabowo's moves to expand the military's role in governance. Human rights advocates emphasise a collective trauma over past abuses as public protests arise against new legislation, as reported by the Economic Times . Despite this, Prabowo maintains that limitations are in place, while fears of media suppression and intimidation grow due to recent incidents involving local journalists.

Withdrawal from $7.7 billion EV battery project

A South Korean consortium led by LG has decided to withdraw its $7.7 billion electric vehicle battery supply chain project in Indonesia, citing changes in the industrial landscape and reduced global EV demand. Despite this exit, LG Energy Solution plans to maintain its existing operations in Indonesia, including a joint venture with Hyundai for battery production, reports Social News XYZ .

Rising cocaine use reported in Indonesia

Tempo reports that the Indonesian National Police reported a rising trend in cocaine use, evidenced by a recent seizure of 25 kilogrammes of cocaine in Aceh and North Sumatra. The increase reflects the activity of an international drug distribution network. Despite cocaine's limited distribution due to high costs, arrests in this case indicate growing concerns regarding drug abuse in the country.

First ministerial ‘2+2’ dialogue between Indonesia and China

Indonesia and China are set to hold their first-ever 2+2 ministerial dialogue on April 21 in Beijing, marking a significant step in bilateral relations.

Safer, cleaner cooking methods

Uganda is transitioning to safer and cleaner cooking solutions in schools by introducing Shell Gas, following the Ministry of Energy’s directive to phase out traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve health outcomes for students and staff, Pulse Uganda reports. The Shell Gas package includes gas tanks, cookers, safety equipment, and free training for staff on safe usage. King’s College Budo is the first school to integrate Shell Gas, with its headmaster highlighting the importance of this transition for health, safety, and environmental sustainability.

Ugandan shilling

The Ugandan shilling remained stable on March 31, 2025, due to low dollar demand across all sectors. As of 0955 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 3,655/3,665, unchanged from the previous close, according to CNBC Africa .

Power distribution

Umeme Ltd has officially handed over power distribution to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) after its 30-year concession ended. CEO Selestino Babungi warned that Uganda could face a power deficit in three years if current demand, outpacing supply, is not addressed. Without intervention, projections indicate shortages by 2028. Pulse Uganda reports that while Uganda's electricity consumption is anticipated to grow by 14% annually, the government is exploring new generation projects, including a feasibility study for the 400 MW Kiba hydropower plant. During Umeme's tenure, significant infrastructure improvements were made, increasing customer connections and reducing energy losses, but the network is currently under strain from rising demand.

Oil refinery investment

Uganda has signed an agreement with UAE-based Alpha MBM Investments for a 60 percent stake in a $4 billion crude oil refinery in Kabaale, Hoima District, with Uganda's state-run Uganda National Oil Company retaining the remaining 40 percent. The Arabian Gulf Business Insight reports that this 60,000-barrel-per-day facility is crucial for Uganda's emerging hydrocarbons sector. The agreement follows earlier negotiations that commenced on January 16. Additionally, Uganda and UAE investors finalised five other agreements in various sectors.

Hike in Mpox cases

Uganda has reported a total of 4,810 confirmed Mpox cases and 37 deaths since the outbreak began eight months ago, according to the Ministry of Health. In the past 24 hours, there were 13 new infections and six deaths. The majority of cases are among young adults aged 25-29 in urban areas, Azernews reports. The World Health Organisation has stated that Uganda has the highest number of community-transmitted Mpox cases globally, prompting health authorities to enhance surveillance and awareness efforts. Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is spread through close contact and exhibits symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and skin rash.

Venezuela’s Chavista government confirmed on Thursday the resumption of repatriation flights for Venezuelan migrants deported from the United States, as part of the ongoing “Return to the Homeland” Plan. The announcement follows a renewed bilateral agreement reached with U.S. Special Envoy Richard Grenell. Merco Press reports that the initiative was formally announced by National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez, who attributed previous delays to Washington, citing the revocation of Chevron’s operating license in Venezuela by President Donald Trump as a contributing factor.

Chevron contractors still operating in Venezuela despite Trump ultimatum

Venezuelan gov't appeals for foreign investment ahead of oil sanctions deadline

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is seeking international investment as the country braces for a new wave of U.S. sanctions targeting the oil sector. In a televised meeting on Tuesday, Maduro declared Venezuela open to foreign investment in oil, gas, petrochemicals, and refining, urging global partners to "produce and make profits." Despite offering incentives, Venezuela’s oil industry continues to struggle with underinvestment, poor maintenance, and U.S. sanctions, which have deterred even non-U.S. firms. Maduro also reviewed key national projects and called for plans focused on production, domestic supply, and exports, reports Venezuelanalysis .

American Kitesurfer detained for months in Venezuela

People reports that Lucas Hunter, 37, was motorcycling and kitesurfing along Colombia’s northern coast when he sent a chilling voice note to his sister Sophie: he had been seized by Venezuelan military forces after accidentally approaching the border. "They took me across the border. I’m being held in Venezuela, help me," he said. Sophie, 30, who lives in Switzerland, says she immediately feared the worst. "He was trying not to scare me, but I could tell he was terrified," she recalls. The siblings had planned to travel together, but after Sophie fell ill, Lucas went ahead alone with his non-refundable ticket and passion for kitesurfing.

Namibia's indoor hockey women's team achieved a significant milestone by securing their spot in the World Cup after a dominant 4-1 victory over Croatia, resulting in a comprehensive 2-0 series win. Coach Shayne Cormack noted that the team's performance showcased marked improvement and effective teamwork, especially in the wake of a previous disappointing draw. As they prepare for their opening match against Australia, the team expresses confidence despite Australia’s superior ranking. Key player Kiana Cormack highlights the substantial growth among team members, conveying optimism about their prospects for advancement in the tournament. The team's strategy includes adapting to a more physical style of play, as demonstrated in their series against Croatia, Namibian reports.

Educational investments

In a moving development, the National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) has allocated a significant sum of N$1,526,032.70 (around $80,000) in bursaries to 36 promising students, underscoring its commitment to nurturing the nation’s artistic and cultural landscape. Among the 116 applications received, selected students will benefit from financial assistance to pursue studies in various fields, including game design, digital art, graphic design, and arts management. According to Musicinafrica , this initiative is part of NACN's broader mission to enhance educational avenues and cultivate a skilled workforce that aligns with Namibia's sustainable development objectives. The funding emanates from the National Arts Fund, aimed at bolstering both contemporary and traditional arts, particularly within underrepresented communities.

Closure of roads

In infrastructure news, Namibia's Roads Authority has enacted a temporary closure of District Road 3522 (Namalubi–Kalumba) within the Zambezi Region owing to extensive damage inflicted by heavy rainfall, with no immediate timeline established for reopening. Other routes—DR3510, DR3512, and DR3572—are reportedly navigable but present hazardous conditions due to adverse weather, Attatravel reports. Stakeholders, including travellers and tourism operators, are urged to monitor updates actively, reconsider their travel plans for safety, and ensure adequate insurance coverage during these ongoing wet conditions. Future reports are anticipated as repair initiatives are undertaken.

Women’s recognition

On an international scale, Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, the CEO of Merck Foundation and the pioneering force behind the "More Than a Mother" campaign, has been accoladed for the sixth successive year as one of the 100 Most Influential African Women in 2024 by Avance Media. Her recognition stems from her impactful leadership in advancing women's empowerment, education, and reforming healthcare across the African continent. Dr. Kelej prioritises collaborative efforts with African governments and First Ladies to champion women's rights and combat infertility stigma, Socialnews reports. With over 2,100 scholarships provided for critical medical studies, her interactive community engagement promotes both health awareness and local initiatives. Dr. Kelej’s active leadership style earns her high regard among African leaders, healthcare professionals, and youth, serving as an inspiration for upcoming generations of women and change agents.

Unemployment rate

The 2023 Labour Force Survey in Namibia has unveiled pressing issues related to unemployment and income inequality. The report indicates that merely 46.2% of the working-age population is engaged in the labour market, revealing a concerning gender disparity (51.1% for men compared to 41.9% for women) and elevated youth unemployment rates, with 41.9% identified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). The unemployment rate stands at 36.9% based on the 2023 definitions, escalating to 54.8% when applying the broader criteria used in 2018. This illustrates a high prevalence of underemployment and individuals who have become discouraged in their job search. Furthermore, a notable 55.4% of those employed earn less than N$5,000 monthly, with a mere 2.6% exceeding earnings of N$40,000. Namibian reports that the data highlights low participation in the labour force (46.2%), particularly in rural locales (33.4%), entwined with a predominant reliance on wage employment (84.7% of the workforce). Significant regional disparities persist, with Kavango East and West exhibiting the highest unemployment rates, surpassing 52%. The findings point to a mismatch between educational qualifications and job availability, thus fostering worker discouragement. There is an urgent need for targeted strategies to stimulate job creation and bridge the skills gap, thereby fostering economic growth and stability.

Technology advancement

Vietnam is poised to become a regional manufacturing tech hub in 2024, with foreign direct investment (FDI) reaching nearly $31.4 billion in the first 11 months, up 7.1% from 2023. VN Express reports that the northern province of Bac Ninh led in investment, registering $5.04 billion, while Singapore was the top investor, contributing over $9.14 billion. FDI is increasingly directed towards high-value sectors, including electronics and green technology, with significant agreements made with companies like NVIDIA and SpaceX.

Investment

Đông Triều City, recently elevated to city status in Quảng Ninh Province, is emerging as a key investment destination in northern Vietnam. It boasts strong infrastructure, including completed transport projects like Triều Bridge and connections to National Highway No.18A. The city attracted over VNĐ1 trillion (US$39.23 million) in non-state investment last year, with various projects underway, including an industrial waste facility and new industrial parks. Local businesses recognise Đông Triều's strategic location and modern infrastructure as major advantages. Officials advocate for policy reforms and improved business environments to boost investment and economic growth in the city, according to Viet Nam News .

Most polluted city

Hanoi has been ranked as the world’s most polluted city, with PM2.5 levels 13.2 times above the World Health Organisation's annual guideline. Philippine News Agency reports that the air quality index (AQI) reached 309, categorising it as "unhealthy." Authorities recommend that residents avoid outdoor exercise, keep windows closed, and wear masks.

Education

Vietnam aims to have five universities in the world's top 500 and the top 200 in Asia by 2030, as part of its Education Development Strategy approved last December. Currently, only Duy Tan University ranks in the top 500 globally according to QS, while four universities are in the top 200 in Asia. The country also targets an increase in university enrollment, raising the number to 260 students per 10,000 people, enhancing the proportion of lecturers with doctoral degrees to 40%, and achieving a 35% enrollment in STEM fields. Plans include attracting foreign experts, training more doctoral faculty, and focusing on digital transformation and international integration in education, VN Express reports.

Historical artifacts

Vietnam has recognised four royal antiques from Hue City as national treasures in a recent decision by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, increasing the total to 33 recognised artifacts. The newly designated treasures include: Ngo Mon Bell (1822) - A bronze bell used for administrative ceremonies, displayed at the Meridian Gate in the Hue Imperial City, Stone Relief (1829) - The only marble artifact bearing King Minh Mang's inscriptions, displayed at Long An Palace, King Duy Tan's Throne - Created for the young king's coronation in the early 20th century, also preserved at Long An Palace, Dragon Statue (1842) - A significant bronze casting artifact symbolising imperial authority, displayed at Thai Hoa Palace. These items highlight the artistic and historical significance of the Nguyen Dynasty, local news reports indicate.

Unprecedented surge in franchise registrations

Saudi Arabia has seen an unprecedented surge in franchise registrations, marking an astonishing 866% increase to 1,788 by Q3 2024 from just 185 in 2021. The rise is primarily attributed to the Franchise Law implemented in October 2019 and subsequent regulatory enhancements that provide greater clarity for franchisors and franchisees. The accommodation and food services sector stands out with 1,232 registrations, followed by wholesale and retail with 689, and transportation with 257. Particularly, Riyadh leads the nation with 647 franchises, reflecting the country's strategic commitment to economic diversification and entrepreneurship aligned with Vision 2030.

Over 1,200 foreign investors awarded premium residency

Saudi Arabia has awarded premium residency to 1,238 foreign investors. This initiative, highlighted by Minister of Investment Khalid Al Falih during the World Investment Conference in Riyadh, is designed to attract global talent in alignment with the Vision 2030 reform agenda. As a result, the country has observed a 70% growth in its GDP, now reaching $1.1 trillion, with non-oil sectors now comprising 53% of the economy. The new residence status, effective January 2024 under the Expatriate Residency Law, provides significant benefits such as property ownership, independent business operations, and visa-free travel. Applicants can choose between a renewable one-year permit or an unlimited-term option depending on their eligibility.

28th World Investment Conference

Saudi Arabia has kicked off the 28th World Investment Conference (WIC), taking place in Riyadh from November 25-27 led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and is poised to address vital topics for the future. Organised by the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies and Invest Saudi, this year’s theme, "Harnessing Digital Transformation and Sustainable Growth: Scaling Investment Opportunities," prioritises the Kingdom’s strategic vision and global partnerships aimed at sustainable economic growth.

US Senators oppose FIFA’s selection of Saudi Arabia as World Cup host

Two US Senators, Ron Wyden and Dick Durbin, have publicly opposed FIFA's selection of Saudi Arabia as a potential host for the 2034 World Cup, citing serious human rights violations. Their letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino draws attention to severe issues including the torture of political dissidents, extrajudicial killings, systemic discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, and widespread labour rights infringements. The senators argue that the approval of Saudi Arabia's bid, which is the only candidate following a fast-track nomination, would contradict FIFA's own human rights commitments. They have urged FIFA to reconsider the bid comprehensively before an expected endorsement in December.

Upgraded Moody’s credit rating

Rating agency Moody’s has upgraded Saudi Arabia’s sovereign credit rating to Aa3, recognising robust fiscal management and ongoing efforts in economic diversification. This upgrade signals strong confidence in the kingdom's capability to handle anticipated annual deficits ranging between 2% and 3% through 2030 while maintaining a projected low debt-to-GDP ratio, expected to rise to 35% by that year. The country's strategic investments in sectors such as tourism and electric vehicles herald significant economic prospects, although the pace of project implementation could face challenges due to resource limitations.

India-Indonesia ties

During a bilateral meeting at the G20 Summit, Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto requested India's assistance in enhancing health education by welcoming Indian professors and doctors to Indonesian universities. Indonesia faces a shortage of 160,000 doctors, prompting Prabowo to propose cooperation in the health and education sectors. He also expressed interest in Indian investment in Indonesia's pharmaceutical industry and hospitals, and highlighted the importance of increasing Indonesian students studying in India. According to The Star , Prabowo noted Indonesia's intention to import rice from India and appreciated India's support during his presidential inauguration. The two leaders emphasised the long-standing and harmonious relationship between their countries.

Export growth target

Indonesia aims for a 9.6% growth in exports by 2029 to support President Prabowo Subianto's economic growth target of up to 8%. For 2025, the export growth target is set at 7.1%. As of September 2024, Indonesia recorded an export value of USD 192.85 billion, a 0.32% increase year-on-year, and a trade surplus of USD 3.26 billion. The Ministry of Trade is optimistic about achieving these goals through trade contracts with partners and market diversification, especially with countries under free trade agreements, Antaranews reports.

Woman café in Indonesia

Qurrata Ayuni operates Morning Mama, the only woman-run cafe in Banda Aceh, Indonesia's conservative province. Opened to provide a comfortable space for women, it offers an alternative to male-dominated coffee shops. Despite Aceh's strict adherence to Sharia law, which impacts women's career opportunities, Qurrata aims to empower women through her business. The Hindu reports that she employs both women and men, serves a mostly female clientele, and includes children's books and menstrual products. After surviving the 2004 tsunami, which claimed her parents, she is motivated to help other women find resilience and challenge societal norms. Qurrata believes in women's potential as leaders and innovators, encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite societal constraints.

Apple investments

Apple Inc. is set to invest approximately $100 million in Indonesia over the next two years, following a government ban on the sale of its iPhone 16 model. Initially, Apple planned a $10 million investment for accessory and component production in Bandung. The increased investment responds to Indonesia's industry ministry's emphasis on local smartphone research and development, Techinasia reports.

Development

During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia emphasised the country's commitment to combating hunger and poverty, highlighting these issues as critical for the fourth-largest population globally. He outlined a national strategy prioritising education and social programs, including free meals for students, to alleviate poverty. Prabowo aims to achieve food and energy security within the next few years and stressed the interconnectedness of global economic challenges and geopolitical dynamics. He called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza to foster peace and stability necessary for addressing poverty and hunger effectively, according to Antaranews .

The launch event took place in Lusaka on November 12, where Zambia's Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, highlighted the significant role this association will play in advancing the nation’s copper production goals, as reported by local news outlet ZNBC .

“The association will contribute to Zambia’s three million tonnes copper production strategy,” said Kabuswe in a speech delivered on his behalf by Tobias Musonda, Director of Planning and Communication.

The new association, CMEAZ, will also function as a collaboration platform, supporting Chinese mining companies operating in Zambia to deepen their partnerships and cooperative efforts with the country.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing, emphasised the longstanding relationship between Zambia and Chinese enterprises. "Companies from China have made significant investments of over $3.5 billion over the past 25 years," he stated.

Zambia’s mining sector remains critical to the national economy, producing copper and other essential minerals. The Ministry of Finance and National Planning reports that in the first quarter of 2024, mining contributed 15.6% to Zambia’s total economic output, maintaining its position as the second-largest contributor to the nation’s GDP for both 2023 and early 2024.

The Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No 4) Bill, 2024, which was tabled in Parliament on Friday, November 8, proposes changes to the Immigration Act and the Land Act to accommodate Tanzanians who have acquired citizenship in other countries.

The proposed amendments, the Citizen Tanzania reports, will enable Tanzanians abroad to own property, including land, in Tanzania and grant them the right to transfer or inherit such assets. Additionally, Tanzanians holding foreign passports would be exempt from the rigorous visa procedures applied to other foreign nationals.

To formalise these changes, the Immigration Act will introduce a 'Diaspora Tanzanite Card' for non-citizen Tanzanians who obtain special status. "A card issued in terms of this Act shall be valid for ten years and may be renewed," states the Bill in part. The Diaspora Tanzanite Card will grant former Tanzanians and their descendants a special status, allowing them to enter, reside, and participate in Tanzania's economic and social activities without needing Tanzanian citizenship.

With a population exceeding 67 million, Tanzania has a relatively small diaspora community —about 320,000 as of 2020—compared to neighbouring Kenya, which has approximately 3 million Kenyans living abroad.

Tanzania’s government hopes the ‘special status’ initiative will drive an increase in diaspora remittances, which play a crucial role in the national economy, from $751 million in 2023 to a projected $1.5 billion by 2028. This upward trend marks significant growth from the $430 million recorded in 2018.

Tragically, drone strikes in Ethiopia's Amhara region have resulted in the deaths of at least 18 civilians, including vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. The attacks targeted the Fano forces and have been attributed to directives from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, though independent verification remains absent. Local reports say the government has refrained from commenting but asserts military achievements against the Fano. Mixed messages from military officials indicate ongoing strife, with the reported death toll among government troops suggesting significant losses. Notably, the reliance on drone warfare has increased amid inefficiencies in traditional military confrontations.

Ethiopian sports legend dies

The Ethiopian football community mourns the passing of legendary player and coach Asrat Haile, affectionately known as "Goradew," who died at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness. His interment took place in Addis Ababa, drawing widespread expressions of sympathy from fans and the Ethiopian Football Federation, Borkena reports. Over a remarkable 53-year career, Haile secured multiple accolades with St. George Club and held the coaching role for the Ethiopian National Team, Walia, on three occasions between 2001 and 2004. He is survived by his wife and five children, leaving behind a formidable legacy in Ethiopian sports.

Investment licensing

In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Ethiopia’s Investment Commission (EIC) granted 108 new investment licences, contributing to the country's economic liberalisation efforts. Of the issued licences, 65 were allocated to foreign investors, with the remaining to joint ventures and domestic enterprises. This trend reflects Ethiopia's commitment to attracting both local and international investment following recent trading reforms, which have drawn interest from 78 international firms. According to TV Brics , the EIC is also advancing its initiative to convert industrial parks into Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to boost export-oriented activities. In this quarter, the nation achieved over US$131 million in industrial exports, with SEZs contributing more than US$23 million, indicating a positive trajectory in economic development.

Swordfish kills surfer

The recent surfing tragedy that claimed the life of Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini has raised awareness about the unpredictable dangers of ocean sports. Surfing off Masokut Island in Indonesia, Manfrini was fatally injured when a swordfish impaled her in a freak accident. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries, causing an outpouring of grief and tributes from her community in Italy, Fox News reported.

New state investment firm

In the realm of Indonesian politics, President Prabowo Subianto's recent initiatives mark a significant shift in the country's investment landscape. He is set to introduce the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency, inspired by Singapore's Temasek. This agency aims to consolidate state investments across various sectors, enhancing the government's oversight and potentially boosting investor confidence, Tuoitre News reported. Prabowo's appointment of Muliaman Hadad to lead this new agency reflects a strategic move towards policy continuity with the previous administration.

Prabowo swears in large cabinet

Furthermore, President Prabowo's cabinet has expanded, incorporating over ten new ministers compared to his predecessor's administration. This coalition, involving 12 political parties, holds a significant majority in parliament, which could streamline legislative processes. The new structure introduces 48 portfolios, enhancing the government's capacity to address various sectors effectively. According to news agency NHK World , observers note that this adjustment could serve to consolidate Prabowo's authority and accelerate the implementation of his policies.

Bilateral trade

On the economic front, Indonesia and Vietnam are set to enhance bilateral trade, aiming for a target of $18 billion. The focus will be on sectors such as the Halal industry, the digital economy, and the promotion of electric vehicle development, VOV World reported. Conversations between the two nations' leaders underscore the importance of robust cooperation in trade, agriculture, and regional security, all under the banner of ASEAN unity.

Earthquake

Lastly, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake rattled Tapat Island, affecting approximately 50,000 residents. Fortunately, the earthquake did not cause injuries or property damage, and a tsunami was ruled out. However, the event serves as a reminder of Indonesia's geological volatility, as the country frequently experiences seismic activity, evidenced by a spate of quakes on the same day, according to the Daily Mail's report.

Southeast Asia needs $190 billion in clean energy investments by 2035 to meet climate goals, IEA says

The report emphasised that increasing energy investments need to go hand-in-hand with strategies aimed at reducing emissions from the region's relatively young coal-fired power plants, which currently dominate its energy landscape. The challenge is compounded by the rapid economic growth in Southeast Asia, which threatens both energy security and climate objectives.

However, efforts to accelerate the closure of coal plants in emerging markets, a key initiative backed by wealthy Western nations, have hit delays. A deadline in July for an agreement on the early closure of an Indonesian pilot project passed without resolution, as reported by Reuters.

Electricity demand across Southeast Asia is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4% in the coming years. Clean energy sources—including wind, solar, modern bioenergy, and geothermal—are forecast to meet more than a third of the rising demand by 2035, the IEA report notes.

Still, the projected increase in clean energy won't be sufficient to significantly curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The region’s energy-related CO2 emissions are expected to rise by 35% between now and the mid-21st century.

"Clean energy technologies are not expanding quickly enough, and the continued heavy reliance on fossil fuel imports is leaving countries highly exposed to future risks," said Fatih Birol, the IEA's executive director.

Despite Southeast Asia's status as an economic powerhouse, attracting just 2% of global clean energy investments, the region accounts for 6% of global GDP, 5% of global energy demand, and is home to 9% of the world's population, according to the IEA.

To support the expansion of renewable energy, particularly variable sources like wind and solar, the region will need to modernise its power grids. This modernisation will require annual investments to double to nearly $30 billion by 2035, the report concludes.
