The session, convened by Paul Biya, brings together members of both legislative chambers to consider the proposal. The draft would allow the president to appoint and dismiss a vice president, sparking debate over political succession. While some lawmakers say the process will reflect the will of the people , opposition figures have raised concerns about its potential impact on national unity and the balance of power.

Footage from Wednesday shows 30-year-old Samara Martínez preparing her daily medication, counting supplies for her hemodialysis sessions and browsing the Ley Trasciende website, the citizen-led proposal she promotes to reform Mexico’s General Health Law and Federal Penal Code.

Drawing directly from her experience as a chronic patient, Martínez argues that Mexico must establish a regulated framework for euthanasia and assisted suicide for adults facing terminal, degenerative, or irreversible illnesses. She explains that the draft legislation “specifies to legalise and decriminalise euthanasia for people over 18 years of age who have an incurable, chronic, degenerative, or terminal stage disease, or some disabling or health-threatening condition.” The proposal also prioritises medical verification and patient autonomy, requiring confirmation from two doctors and repeated consent from the applicant.

Martínez’s advocacy reflects the profound physical and emotional toll of her condition. She undergoes long and demanding hemodialysis sessions due to chronic renal failure, further complicated by lupus. For her, the push for legislative reform is deeply personal, grounded in what she sees as a fundamental right to self-determination: “When such a strong disease comes into your life and after many years of battling it, I think it is dignified to empower yourself over your own death,” she says.

On 28 October, Martínez presented the Ley Trasciende proposal before Mexico’s Senate, noting broad openness across parliamentary groups and meetings with health committees aimed at securing a public debate in the next legislative period. While Mexico currently criminalises assisted death as “homicide out of pity”, the growing visibility of cases like hers is reshaping public discussion over whether the country should allow patients living with irreversible suffering to choose a dignified end to life.

Xu, known for creating the hit online game Fantasy Westward Journey and founding Duoyi Network, is currently locked in a legal dispute with his ex-partner, Tang Jing, over 300 million yuan ($42 million). The pair lived together for 14 years but were never legally married.

Xu alleged that Tang still owes him the money after he transferred large sums to her between 2012 and 2018. He says she has returned part of the funds but not the full amount, prompting him to file a lawsuit this year.

Tang has rejected the accusations, stating that the money was used to support what she called their “big family of 300 children.” She claimed on social media that the vast majority of the funds were spent on living costs and childcare expenses.

When questioned online, Tang insisted the number was not exaggerated, saying it could even be under-reported. She also said many of the children lack official household registration documents.

Tang further claimed that a recent court hearing ended in her favour, dismissing Xu’s demand for repayment. She said she is now raising 11 children said to have been fathered by Xu and is fighting for custody of their two daughters.

Duoyi Network responded with a public statement, accusing an unnamed individual of spreading false information and urging social media platforms to remove damaging posts.

The controversy has rekindled criticism of Xu, who has previously faced accusations of promoting misogynistic and polygamous views. He once publicly stated his ambition to father at least 50 “high-quality sons.”

The claims have sparked widespread anger online, with many users questioning the ethical and legal implications if the allegations are true.

The case continues to dominate Chinese social media, where calls are growing for authorities to investigate the extraordinary claims surrounding the tech entrepreneur.

Advocates say the reform could significantly reduce maternal deaths linked to unsafe abortions, which account for an estimated 10% of pregnancy-related fatalities in the country.

President Julius Maada Bio has introduced the Safe Motherhood Bill, which would legalise abortion up to 14 weeks into pregnancy. The move aligns with global shifts in reproductive rights, particularly following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to roll back abortion protections.

Currently, an estimated 90,000 abortions occur annually in Sierra Leone, contributing to a high maternal mortality rate of 717 deaths per 100,000 births.

Healthcare professionals argue that restrictive laws force women to seek unsafe procedures, leading to severe medical complications.

Nurse Hawanatu Samura described cases where women suffered life-threatening infections and injuries due to illegal abortion attempts. Medical workers stress that legalizing abortion would ensure safer options for those in need.

However, the bill faces opposition from religious leaders and conservative groups. Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles has condemned the legislation as "ungodly" and accused supporters of exaggerating abortion statistics to push an agenda. Opponents also claim foreign influence is driving the reform, though the U.S. embassy in Sierra Leone has denied any involvement.

Women’s rights groups continue to push for the bill’s passage, arguing that it is a necessary step toward improving healthcare and gender equality. Last year’s ban on child marriage demonstrated progress in advancing women’s rights, but the fate of the Safe Motherhood Bill remains uncertain as debates intensify in parliament.
