Yemen’s Defence Minister, Major General Taher Al-Aqili, has warned that the country will respond to what he described as repeated violations of its airspace. In a statement addressed to both military personnel and the public, he said diplomatic efforts had failed to resolve the issue, accusing Iran and Houthi forces of escalating actions that challenge international norms.

Al-Aqili said Yemen would take action using all available means to defend its sovereignty, stressing that patience had been exhausted. He added that the response would aim to deter further incidents and reaffirm the country’s ability to protect its territory across land, sea and air.

Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters, Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations , Amir Saeid Iravani, said Tehran would only remain committed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as long as the United States fulfilled its obligations.

"Should the United States continue to violate its obligations under the MoU, Iran will no longer be bound to fulfil its obligations under the MoU," Iravani said.

He accused Washington of violating the agreement by carrying out military strikes on Iranian territory, including attacks on southern cities and several islands in the Persian Gulf on July 7 and 8.

"The United States bears full international responsibility for all legal and political consequences arising from its unlawful action," he said.

Addressing the Strait of Hormuz, Iravani said responsibility for reopening the strategic waterway and conducting demining operations rested solely with Iran under the memorandum. He warned that any attempts by external powers to establish separate arrangements would breach the agreement, delay the resumption of commercial shipping and increase regional tensions.

The United States has said its latest strikes were carried out in response to attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strait. Tehran has not claimed responsibility for those attacks, Viory reports.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Meloni said Italy had maintained the same position since the conflict began. "We would not participate in attacks on Iran, and we are not participating in attacks on Iran, and we will not participate in attacks on Iran," she said.

Responding to questions about the use of Italian military bases, Meloni said the government's position had remained unchanged.

"As far as the bases are concerned, it is not that we made decisions or choices in such a way, one day doing one thing and another day doing something else. We have had a very clear line from the beginning of the conflict in Iran, and we maintain that line," she said.

Her remarks came after US President Donald Trump criticised Italy's refusal to support US military action against Iran.

On Tuesday, Trump described Meloni as "a nice person" but said her decision not to become involved had affected their relationship.

"She refused to get involved, so it soured my relationship with her a little bit...I think she made a mistake," Trump told reporters in Turkey. Meloni also voiced concern over the worsening security situation in the Middle East, warning that further escalation could destabilise the wider region.

"I am obviously very concerned about what is happening in Iran," she said. "We cannot rule out that this might also spread to other areas of this delicate region." The Italian prime minister argued that military action had failed to produce lasting results and said diplomacy remained the best path toward resolving the crisis.

On NATO, Meloni said discussions with allies had not included any plans to reduce US troop deployments in Europe. She added, however, that Washington had long called on European allies to assume a greater share of the alliance's defence responsibilities.

Footage from the overnight gathering showed crowds filling the Grand Mosalla, with mourners holding portraits of Khamenei, praying and weeping as they honoured the late leader.

Among those attending was Reyhaneh Abdi, who spoke of her grief during the ceremony.

"I loved my leader with all my soul, and my greatest wish was to sacrifice my life for him, but it didn't happen. Now, I am deeply ashamed before my leader that I survived, while my leader was martyred, by the most wicked creatures and the lowest of people ," she said.

Another mourner, Saeid Khane-Baz, said Khamenei's death would not weaken the Islamic Republic.

"They are so weak to think that by martyring the high official, the commander-in-chief, the Supreme Leader, the country will be destroyed. No, they are mistaken. They have trained many soldiers. I am also a soldier. We are all soldiers, and we will remain soldiers of this country," he said.

Iranian authorities have introduced extensive arrangements to accommodate the large crowds, converting mosques, parks and stadiums into temporary facilities and setting up camps for mourners.

A public funeral procession is scheduled to take place on July 6 before ceremonies move to the holy city of Qom on July 7.

The funeral observances are expected to conclude in Mashhad, where Khamenei is due to be buried at the Imam Reza shrine on July 9.

Speaking after the agreement was announced, Netanyahu said Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah and Iran had paved the way for the deal.

"We are breaking the Iranian terror axis here, but we are also breaking the Iranian political axis. We managed to reach these understandings for a simple reason: because we hit Hezbollah hard. Hezbollah, which relied on assistance from Iran, did not receive that assistance because we hit Iran hard," he said.

The agreement, signed in Washington after five rounds of direct talks, outlines a phased process under which the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) will assume control of designated areas in southern Lebanon, replacing Hezbollah as Israeli troops withdraw in stages.

Netanyahu said Israel was not a party to the separate negotiations between the United States and Iran but stressed that Israeli security interests would remain a priority.

"From the start, we said we were not a party to the agreement between the United States and Iran, but that does not mean we do not have interests. We have interests, and we will make them clear. On the main issue, which is the nuclear issue, I intend to send a delegation to Washington to present Israel's interests. I insist on Israel's interests at our border. We will not leave the security zone," he said.

The deal places significant responsibility on the Lebanese government, which is expected to deploy additional troops to the south, dismantle Hezbollah's military infrastructure and prevent the group's return. The United States has pledged continued military assistance to the LAF.

In a video, Netanyahu said Iran was attempting to pressure Israel into withdrawing from southern Lebanon, but that the agreement sent a clear message that Tehran had no role to play.

“Iran is trying to force us to withdraw by force from southern Lebanon, and basically Israel, Lebanon, and the United States are telling them, ‘It is none of your business .’ You have no role in Lebanon, neither you, nor Hezbollah, nor any terrorist organisation,” he said.

Netanyahu said the 14-point framework allows Israeli troops to remain in southern Lebanon for as long as Hezbollah remains armed and continues to pose a threat to Israel.

“We have been conducting negotiations in Washington between representatives of Israel, Lebanon, and the United States, a prolonged negotiation, and today it has borne fruit. The most important thing is, first of all, that Israel remains in the security zone in southern Lebanon. This is a great achievement,” he added.

Under the framework, the Lebanese Armed Forces are expected to “restore effective sovereignty over all Lebanese territory,” while non-state armed groups would be disarmed and their military infrastructure dismantled.

Netanyahu said the agreement would allow the Lebanese army to begin organising its deployment in selected areas.

“We are allowing the Lebanese army to begin organising to take up territory. We are establishing two pilot areas, both recommended by the IDF; one is completely outside the security zone and south of the Litani, and the other is north of the Litani,” he said.

The agreement was signed at the US State Department in Washington on Friday, following four days of talks mediated by the Trump administration. As part of the agreement, Washington pledged $100 million in humanitarian assistance, as well as more than $30 million in support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, Viory reports.

US President Donald Trump declared that the Middle East was entering a new era of peace, claiming the region was experiencing its first real opportunity for stability in 3,000 years.

Speaking at the opening of the Great American State Fair in Washington DC on Wednesday, Trump described the recent agreement with Iran as a historic breakthrough.

"Last week, we signed a historic agreement to end the conflict with Iran, fully open the Strait of Hormuz, and accomplish what no president has ever been able to accomplish before. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. That's done," Trump said.

He claimed the agreement had removed a long-standing regional threat.

"Their leadership has been obliterated. And for the first time in 3,000 years, we are finally going to have peace in the Middle East. We're going to have peace in the Middle East," he added.

Trump also praised the US military's recent operations in Iran and Venezuela , suggesting Washington remained prepared to take further action if necessary.

"How good is our military ? One week, Iran was essentially finished. In one hour, Venezuela was finished. And I guess we have other things in store, but we don't want to get carried away," he said.

The remarks came as Trump launched the Freedom 250 celebrations on the National Mall during a rally marking the opening of the Great American State Fair.

The event opens to the public on June 25 and runs until July 10, featuring exhibitions, performances, food, attractions and cultural displays representing all 50 US states and six territories.

The celebrations will culminate on July 4, marking 250 years since the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended Israel's expanded military operations across Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, saying the campaigns have strengthened the country's security despite international criticism.

Speaking on Monday, Netanyahu said Israel acted without seeking approval from its allies and maintained that military action prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

"I did not ask for permission; I simply informed him [Trump] of our plans. And I was pleased that he also joined toward the end, which was very important [...] We will not sit and watch while Iran comes and destroys our cities, destroys our citizens, and thousands—if not tens of thousands—die," said Netanyahu.

The Israeli leader said stopping Iran's nuclear programme remained the government's top security objective.

"As long as I am prime minister, Iran will not have nuclear weapons. And another thing: as long as I am prime minister, we will maintain the security zone south of Lebanon for as long as necessary to safeguard the security of Israel's north," he added.

Netanyahu also argued that Israel's operations had weakened Iran's military capabilities.

"The greatest achievement is that if we had not acted when we did, and if we had not struck them forcefully, Iran would already have had nuclear bombs intended for our destruction. We pushed that threat away," he argued.

On defence policy , Netanyahu announced plans to increase Israel's defence spending by 350 billion shekels over the next decade, saying the investment would strengthen domestic weapons production while preserving international partnerships.

"I want the State of Israel to be independent. Because I want an independent domestic defence industry, as self-sufficient as possible," he said.

"We will also expand our alliances. We will preserve our existing alliances and broaden them, but first and foremost, we must be self-reliant," Netanyahu stated.

The remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military tensions. High-level talks between the United States and Iran were held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on June 21, with Pakistan and Qatar acting as mediators to discuss implementation of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.

Lebanon and Israel also began a new round of direct talks in Washington on Tuesday, despite Iran's efforts to include Lebanon in its agreement with the United States.

US and Iran agree on a 60-day roadmap toward a final deal

Developments dominating regional attention include a breakthrough in negotiations between the United States and Iran, which concluded high-level talks at the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock with an agreement to pursue a final settlement within 60 days. The negotiations were conducted under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, with mediation from Qatar and Pakistan. US Vice President JD Vance led the American delegation, while senior Iranian officials represented Tehran. According to the joint statement issued after the talks, both sides agreed on a roadmap covering nuclear issues, regional security, sanctions relief, and confidence-building measures. Mediators described the discussions as “positive and constructive”, although officials acknowledged that substantial differences remain. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later described the negotiations as having made “major progress”, particularly regarding oil exports, financial restrictions, and future economic cooperation. For Syria, the talks are significant because any broader US-Iran understanding could directly affect regional conflict dynamics, sanctions regimes, and the balance of power involving Iran-backed groups operating across the Levant.

Washington and Tehran establish a direct Hormuz communication channel

One of the most important outcomes of the Swiss negotiations was the establishment of a direct communication mechanism between the United States and Iran to protect shipping through the Strait of Hormuz , one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints. Mediators said the hotline was designed to avoid “incidents and miscommunication” as maritime traffic gradually resumes following months of disruption. The agreement comes after prolonged instability in the waterway, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies normally pass. Qatar and Pakistan argued that direct communication is essential to prevent accidental escalation, false alarms, or interference by non-state actors. The move reflects growing recognition that maritime security has become inseparable from broader diplomatic negotiations. For Syria and the wider Middle East, uninterrupted shipping through Hormuz remains critical because energy prices, trade flows, and regional economic stability are heavily influenced by developments in the Gulf.

Massive explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas hub raises energy security concerns

Regional energy markets were shaken by a major explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the world's largest liquefied natural gas processing and export facilities. The blast occurred on 21 June 2026 during restart operations at the Barzan gas facility, one of Qatar’s most strategically important energy sites. Qatari authorities reported that at least 13 people were killed, 66 were injured, and 18 were missing after the explosion. Emergency crews launched extensive rescue operations while investigators worked to determine the cause of the incident. QatarEnergy stated that exports continued, but the accident nevertheless sparked concern across global energy markets because of Ras Laffan’s central role in international LNG supply chains. The incident highlights the vulnerability of regional energy infrastructure at a time when Middle Eastern stability remains closely linked to global energy security. Any disruption to Gulf gas exports has the potential to affect energy prices, industrial supply chains, and economic recovery efforts across multiple continents.

Lebanon ceasefire and Hormuz reopening dominate first round of Swiss talks

Beyond the nuclear file, discussions in Switzerland focused heavily on regional security issues, particularly the situation in Lebanon and the future status of the Strait of Hormuz . According to reports from the negotiations, both sides explored mechanisms to reduce tensions involving Iran-backed groups and prevent the expansion of regional conflict. Negotiators reportedly discussed ceasefire arrangements linked to Lebanon, maritime security guarantees, and measures intended to prevent future confrontations between regional actors. The talks reflected a growing understanding that any durable agreement between Washington and Tehran must address interconnected regional conflicts rather than focusing solely on nuclear issues. For Syria, these discussions are particularly relevant because developments in Lebanon, Iran, and the Gulf often have direct implications for regional military alignments, refugee movements, border security, and economic conditions.

Regional foreign ministers meet in Cairo as diplomacy intensifies

Diplomatic activity continued with a quadrilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo, where regional leaders discussed security coordination, conflict de-escalation , and the evolving diplomatic landscape following the US-Iran negotiations. The gathering reflected increasing efforts by Middle Eastern governments to shape outcomes through diplomacy rather than military confrontation. The meeting comes at a pivotal moment as governments across the region seek to stabilise trade routes, protect energy infrastructure, and prevent further escalation after months of heightened tensions. Officials focused on strengthening regional dialogue mechanisms and supporting initiatives aimed at reducing conflict risks. For Syria, the Cairo consultations underscore how regional diplomacy is becoming increasingly interconnected. Negotiations involving Iran, the Gulf states, Lebanon, Egypt, and international powers are likely to influence the broader political environment in which Syria's future security and reconstruction challenges will be addressed.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in Tehran that giving up uranium enrichment would go against Iran’s national rights, warning the United States and Israel that such a move was not negotiable. He called on Iran’s negotiating team to continue discussions with “strength and resolve”, stressing that the country would not accept pressure, humiliation, or any denial of its nuclear rights. Pezeshkian added that Iran would not “bow to force, oppression, or humiliation” and insisted its enrichment rights must be recognised.

He also claimed US President Donald Trump had shifted his position on Iran’s nuclear programme, saying Washington had moved from demanding unconditional surrender to acknowledging Iran’s rights. His remarks come as Qatar announced the start of the Lake Lucerne Summit, bringing together US and Iranian representatives with mediation from Qatar and Pakistan. Talks are expected to address a regional ceasefire, navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s nuclear programme, alongside a 14-point memorandum outlining de-escalation measures and a 60-day window for broader negotiations.

Footage from the rally showed demonstrators waving Israeli flags and carrying signs critical of Netanyahu, including one reading: "Bibi nominating him again for the Nobel?"

Among the speakers was former Israeli Air Force fighter pilot and technology entrepreneur Jacob "Kobi" Richter, who delivered a scathing criticism of the prime minister's leadership.

Richter accused Netanyahu of leading Israel through "a thousand days of fighting, fraught with cost and dead, with absolute failure at their end."

"Your decisive contribution to the country you were elected to lead amounts to the incitement in Zion Square and the Ra'anana intersection," Richter said. "The October 7 massacre. Abandoning the hostages and returning their bodies instead of their living bodies. The abandonment and liquidation of the north of the country."

He also accused the government of neglecting Arab communities and weakening public institutions. "Abandoning the Arab society , a fifth of your citizens, to murderous crime. The destruction of the public sector and the appointment of your ass-kissers instead of professionals," Richter continued.

He further criticised the recent US-Iran agreement, claiming it had undermined Israel's position internationally.

"The US-Iran agreement that threw you and us with you under the wheels of the bus. Turning Israel into a leper in the eyes of the enlightened nations," he said.

Similar anti-government demonstrations were reported in other Israeli cities, including Jerusalem. The protests come as Israel moves closer to a national election, with the next Knesset vote currently required to be held no later than October 27.

Speaking locally, residents argued the deal places pressure on Israel to cease fighting and potentially withdraw from Lebanon, without imposing equivalent obligations on Hezbollah. Some expressed concern that the agreement overlooks the broader regional security situation.

Others criticised the reliability of the agreement and the US position, suggesting shifting policies could undermine trust. The memorandum of understanding, signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire framework, steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted calls for withdrawal from Lebanon.

In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Khamenei is quoted to have said he agreed to the deal after receiving assurances from President Masoud Pezeshkian and members of the Supreme National Security Council that it would protect "the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front."

“In principle, I held a different view, but because of the commitment the honourable president, as the head of the Supreme National Security Council, gave me on his own behalf and on behalf of other members to safeguard the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front, and because he explicitly accepted responsibility for it, I granted permission for it,” the statement said.

Khamenei added that Pezeshkian had assured him Iran “will not submit” if the United States makes what he described as excessive demands during the next stage of negotiations.

He stressed that engaging in direct talks with Washington did not amount to “accepting the enemy's views.”

The supreme leader also praised Iranian officials for their efforts in advancing the negotiations and claimed that US President Donald Trump had used “various levers” in an attempt to secure the agreement.

The agreement follows months of fighting that disrupted regional security, shipping routes and energy markets .

Speaking at a press briefing in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said any step towards peace is positive, noting that oil prices have already dropped to around $80 per barrel after previously exceeding $100. She emphasised that lower energy costs are particularly significant for Mexico, as the government is currently subsidising petrol and diesel by partially waiving the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS), putting pressure on federal revenues.

The agreement, expected to be signed in Geneva, would see Iran commit to renouncing the development or acquisition of nuclear weapons in exchange for support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. The deal follows nearly four months of conflict involving the US and Israel, which has resulted in over 7,000 deaths, according to official figures, and has raised concerns over regional stability and energy markets .

Residents of Tehran gathered in cafes and public spaces to watch Iran’s opening World Cup match, where the team secured a 2–2 draw against New Zealand after twice coming from behind. Fans expressed hope that the result would lift spirits amid recent tensions, celebrating the team’s resilience and backing them to progress from the group stage.

The match saw Iran respond to two goals from New Zealand’s Elijah Just, with strikes from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi earning a point. The result leaves all teams in Group G level, while Iran’s participation has been overshadowed by visa issues that forced changes to their tournament preparations.

Speaking about the proposed memorandum of understanding being negotiated between the two sides, Araghchi said the agreement would include provisions for the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad and commitments against the use of force.

“Iran's blocked assets will also be released according to the memorandum of understanding that will be signed,” he said.

Araghchi also indicated that the framework would address broader regional issues, including the conflict in Lebanon, as part of efforts to reduce tensions across the Middle East.

The foreign minister warned that opponents of the negotiations were attempting to derail the process, singling out Israel as the main adversary of the proposed agreement.

“I must explicitly state that this agreement has enemies, at the forefront of which is the Zionist regime, and they are looking for pretexts to disrupt this agreement,” he said.

He stressed that pressure and threats would not change Iran's position and could instead undermine diplomatic progress.

“In these circumstances, threats are not only ineffective but also set back a potential agreement; threats must stop, and we must speak with the language of respect in order for us to reach an agreement,” Araghchi said.

His comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a deal with Iran could be signed “this weekend” and suggested a formal signing ceremony could take place in Europe.

Trump also said he had cancelled a planned military strike on Iran following recent exchanges of attacks between the two countries, including incidents linked to a U.S. Apache helicopter crash that Washington blamed on an Iranian drone.

In an interview, Azizi said the United States emerged from the 40-day war without meaningful gains despite incurring significant costs.

“Of course, it is natural for the US President to make such remarks because he has gained nothing,” Azizi said. “He did not achieve anything in the 40-day war, nor in these times. Now, because he has an empty track record and empty hands, and has incurred very heavy costs in this war that have brought no gains for the Americans, while also causing numerous economic problems for the world and the Americans, he is forced to make these threats.”

His comments came amid continued tensions between Tehran and Washington despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a broader agreement following the conflict.

Azizi warned that any future military action against Iran would be met with a stronger response from Tehran.

“However, he should know that this is Iran. This is a united front with a firm ideology based on the principles and ideals of Islam ,” he said.

“Just as our nation and our armed forces stood united during the Ramadan war, should he take any uncalculated action, he will definitely receive a more regretful, more painful, and undoubtedly more decisive response.”

The remarks follow recent warnings from Trump, who has suggested that further military action against Iran remains an option if negotiations fail or if Tehran resumes activities Washington views as threatening regional security .

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the deal was awaiting final documentation and could be signed in Europe .

“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we're going to be subject to finalisation of documents,” Trump said. “We should get done over the next few days. Probably have a signing maybe in Europe.”

The announcement came after Trump said he had cancelled planned military strikes against Iran following an exchange of attacks between the two sides. Tensions had also escalated earlier in the week after the crash of a US Apache helicopter, which Washington blamed on an Iranian drone.

Iran has carried out strikes against US military assets in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait during the conflict. Trump said the agreement would ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon, describing it as the central objective of the negotiations.

“Most importantly, we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this,” he said.

The president also said he had spoken with leaders across the Middle East, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as officials from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Turkey.

Trump claimed regional leaders welcomed the breakthrough and said the agreement could pave the way for improved relations across the region.

“The whole Middle East is happy,” he said. Iran had not publicly commented on Trump's announcement at the time of publication.

From the number of teams involved to the countries hosting it, the 2026 edition will introduce several major changes to football’s biggest competition.

For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations will compete for the trophy, expanding the tournament from its traditional 32-team format. The expansion means more countries, more matches, and more opportunities for teams to make history.

The tournament will also be the first to be hosted by three countries. The United States will stage matches across 11 venues, while Mexico will host games in three cities and Canada in two. The competition will run until 19 July 2026, with the final scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The opening match will see Mexico face South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The expanded tournament will feature 104 matches, a significant increase from the previous 64. Teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing, along with the eight best third-placed teams. Those 32 teams will then move into a newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage.

The list of qualified teams includes some of football’s most successful nations. Former champions Brazil , Argentina, Germany, France, England, Spain and Uruguay are all back. Brazil arrives as the tournament’s most successful nation and is identified as a five-time World Cup winner.

Several countries that have reached World Cup finals without lifting the trophy are also in the field, including Croatia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Czechia.

Among the teams with semifinal appearances in their history are Morocco, the United States, Austria, Belgium, South Korea, Portugal and Türkiye. Morocco enters the tournament as the highest-ranked African team, ranked eighth in the world.

Other nations, including Senegal, Switzerland, Mexico, Colombia , Ghana and Paraguay, will be aiming to improve on previous quarter-final appearances.

The tournament also features a large group of countries that have never gone beyond the quarter-finals. Among them are Japan, Australia, Algeria, Norway, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, South Africa , Egypt, Scotland, Canada, IR Iran, Iraq, DR Congo, Haiti, New Zealand, Panama, Qatar, Côte d'Ivoire, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Some teams are returning after long absences. Scotland is back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, while Iraq returns for the first time since 1986.

Perhaps the biggest stories, however, belong to four nations that will experience the World Cup for the first time. Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan have all secured historic debuts and will be making their first appearances on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking at a press conference in Tijuana, Pasandideh said most of those affected were senior officials and technical staff from the Iranian Football Federation.

“There are 15 people and most are team managers, part of the technical staff as well,” he said. “If they do not show up, it will be a challenge for our team.”

Despite the setback, the ambassador said Iran remained determined to participate in the tournament and would continue efforts to secure the necessary travel documents.

Pasandideh described the World Cup as an opportunity to showcase Iranian talent and promote international understanding through sport.

“The presence of the Iranian national football team in the World Cup is an opportunity to showcase the sporting capabilities of Iranian youth and, at the same time, strengthen friendship and understanding between peoples,” he said.

He stressed that sporting events should remain separate from political disputes. “We believe that sports should be a bridge to bring people together and not a tool to impose restrictions or exclusions. Sports should unite nations, not separate them,” he added.

The ambassador called on FIFA to engage with the relevant authorities to ensure the full participation of Iran's delegation in matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle.

The visa dispute comes on the back of ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington and could complicate preparations for Iran's opening World Cup match against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles.

Speaking at an event with government officials and local leaders on Thursday, Netanyahu said the strategy was built on two priorities, economic development and security .

“There are two components here. One component is development and investment, and the second component is security, deterrence, and prevention,” he said. “We are very determined to carry this out.”

Netanyahu said the initiative was designed to ensure long-term stability and prosperity for northern communities while promoting coexistence among the region’s diverse populations.

“As we say to Jews, Druze, Circassians, and Muslims - we all live together in the same package, and I am committed to that,” he said.

The prime minister described the programme as a major milestone and expressed confidence that northern Israel would undergo a transformation similar to what he said had been achieved in the south.

The remarks come days after the Israeli government approved a 13 billion shekel ($4.5 billion) plan proposed by Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to strengthen towns near the Lebanese border.

The package includes the construction of 1,800 new public bomb shelters, subsidies for safe rooms in homes located within nine kilometres of the border, and a five-year development programme aimed at attracting 100,000 new residents.

Combined with previously approved funding, the total investment in the initiative is expected to reach 20 billion shekels ($6.9 billion).

Netanyahu called the announcement “a day of celebration” and thanked local leaders and government officials involved in advancing the project.

According to the broadcast, the IRGC said it targeted a vessel identified as “Panaya” in response to the incident.

“In response to this aggression and violation of the Strait of Hormuz regulations, the enemy’s American-Zionist vessel named Panaya was targeted by missiles from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy,” the report stated.

The broadcaster also said the United States had carried out another strike on Iranian infrastructure.

“It is mentioned that the American enemy, in another act of aggression, targeted a telecommunications tower of the Corps in the south of Qeshm Island,” it added.

Iran said it responded by targeting US-linked military sites in the region.

“In response to this aggression, their airbase and helicopter base located in one of the countries in the region, as well as the headquarters of the Fifth Fleet, were subjected to missile and drone attacks by the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the report said.

Kuwait’s military said drones struck its international airport, causing “significant” damage. However, US Central Command (CENTCOM) appeared to dispute the extent of the attack.

“Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart en route, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by US and Bahrain air defence forces,” CENTCOM said.

US media reported that President Donald Trump had requested changes to the framework of a potential agreement after talks with aides, including issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, the removal of enriched uranium, and negotiations on Iran’s nuclear deal.

Tehran said on Monday, June 1, that the United States was “constantly changing its views and putting forward new or contradictory demands.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei strongly condemned a reported Ukrainian strike on a girls’ dormitory in Starobilsk that killed 21 people and injured dozens. Speaking in Tehran, he described the attack as a violation of legal and moral standards and labelled it a war crime, calling on European nations to take consistent positions on international humanitarian law.

The incident has further escalated tensions, with Russia denouncing the strike as terrorism and launching retaliatory attacks on Ukrainian military infrastructure. Meanwhile, conflicting claims persist over the intended target of the original strike. Baqaei also addressed broader geopolitical tensions, criticising US actions and noting ongoing but inconclusive diplomatic exchanges between Tehran and Washington.

In a video address on Sunday, Netanyahu said Israeli forces had secured key positions overlooking southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

“The Beaufort is a dramatic step. It is a dramatic shift in the policy we are leading,” he said. “We have returned united, determined and stronger than ever.”

The remarks came after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched extensive strikes on what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure in the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Saluki areas. The military said one Israeli soldier was killed during the operation.

Netanyahu said he had instructed the military to expand its operations in Lebanon and confirmed that Israeli troops had crossed the Litani River.

“They seized commanding areas, they conquered the Beaufort Ridge, and now my directive is to deepen and expand our hold in places that were under Hezbollah's occupation,” he said.

The prime minister added that Israeli forces were operating simultaneously in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon, and claimed Israel had established a security zone beyond its borders.

“We will restore security to the residents of the north, just as we did for the residents of the south,” Netanyahu said. “It will take time, but we will complete the mission.”

Israel previously controlled Beaufort Castle from 1982 until its withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 following the First Lebanon War.

The latest escalation follows Netanyahu’s announcement last week that he had ordered intensified strikes against Hezbollah and an expansion of ground operations aimed at securing what he described as strategic areas.

The fighting comes despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon first announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 15 and later extended several times following talks hosted by Washington.

“We have never been stronger,” Netanyahu said. “But we still face, first and foremost, the weakened Iranian regime. The nuclear threat is still there.”

He said Israel’s campaign against Iran was not yet complete and revealed he remains in frequent contact with U.S. President Donald Trump .

“We still need to complete the mission. I speak with President Trump about this every day - almost every day, every two days. We still have work to finish,” he said.

Netanyahu also highlighted the growing threat posed by drones, citing Iran’s Shahed drones and more advanced systems under development.

“I have no doubt that here too we will become the first country in the world to truly deliver a solution,” he said, referring to drone defence capabilities.

Turning to the war in Gaza, Netanyahu claimed Israeli forces had expanded their control over the territory.

He said the Israel Defense Forces now control about 60 percent of Gaza, up from 50 percent, and that he had instructed the military to increase that figure to 70 percent.

“We are squeezing them from every direction. We will deal with the remnants,” he said, referring to Hamas.

Netanyahu also outlined a broader vision for Israel’s role in regional energy networks, predicting that future oil and gas routes would increasingly connect the Gulf to the Mediterranean through Israel.

“We can further strengthen Israel’s power and truly turn ourselves into a global player,” he said.

On domestic policy , the prime minister said he had instructed officials to establish new communities as part of efforts to expand settlement and development projects across what he described as the Land of Israel.

Footage showed worshippers streaming into the mosque compound from the early hours of the morning, while children handed out sweets and families posed for photos in the courtyards ahead of prayers.

Many worshippers described the return to Al-Aqsa as emotional after restrictions prevented access during key religious celebrations earlier this year.

“We cannot live without Al-Aqsa Mosque. We must pray there every day,” worshipper Abu Mutaz Al-Salima said.

He recalled the difficulties faced during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, when worshippers were prevented from entering the site.

Israel closed the mosque after the outbreak of the joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran on February 28. The shutdown lasted 40 days and coincided with Eid al-Fitr in March, marking the first time since 1967 that the site was entirely closed to the public during the holiday.

Another worshipper, Nidal Najm, said the atmosphere this year contrasted sharply with previous restrictions.

“Unlike last year, when Al-Aqsa Mosque was closed and it was not possible to reach it or pray there, thank God now there are large crowds and a very strong turnout,” he said.

Last year’s Eid al-Adha celebrations were also affected by heavy security measures, including checkpoints and identity checks that restricted access for many Palestinians.

Eid al-Adha is one of the holiest occasions in Islam and coincides with the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

Speaking on Iranian television on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baqaei said Tehran was drafting a 14-point framework agreement focused on ending the conflict and easing tensions in the region.

“Our plan is first to draft a memorandum of understanding, a framework agreement consisting of 14 articles,” Baqaei said.

He said the proposed document would address issues including the end of what Iran describes as a U.S. naval blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

“The end of US naval aggression… along with issues related to the release of Iran’s frozen assets, are the main topics addressed by this memorandum,” he added.

Baqaei said the nuclear issue would not be dealt with in detail at this stage, despite repeated U.S. demands for it to remain central to negotiations.

“The nuclear issue was a pretext for two aggressive wars against the Iranian people ,” he said.

He added that Tehran was prioritising efforts to end the conflict “on all fronts, including Lebanon.”

Baqaei thanked Pakistan for mediating talks between Tehran and Washington, with support from regional actors including Qatar, and said detailed discussions could continue for between 30 and 60 days.

The comments come amid ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has restricted access for what it calls “unfriendly” countries while the United States maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Earlier this week, Baqaei said Iran was coordinating with Oman and other regional parties on a mechanism governing navigation through the strategic waterway.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington wanted the Strait of Hormuz to remain “free” and insisted that “no fees should be imposed.”

Trump also claimed the U.S. had “full control” over the strait and described the naval blockade on Iran as “100% effective.”

The release came as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said Tehran was prepared to help restore stability and normal maritime traffic through the strategic waterway if military escalation ends and the maritime blockade is lifted.

“We declare very clearly that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its global economic consequences are solely the responsibility of the initiators of the war against Iran,” Iravani said on Saturday.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world ’s most important oil shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global energy supplies.

The latest tensions follow months of conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump described the ceasefire with Iran as being on “massive life support” and rejected Tehran’s latest proposal as “garbage,” “stupid” and “unacceptable.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry defended the proposal, calling it “generous” and saying it included demands for an end to the war, the lifting of what it described as “maritime piracy,” and the release of Iranian assets frozen under U.S. pressure.

The United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and announced that his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, would succeed him.

Tehran responded with missile strikes targeting Israel and several countries in the region.

On April 8, Trump announced a two-week truce to allow negotiations aimed at ending the crisis. The ceasefire was later extended indefinitely pending further Iranian proposals.

Pakistan hosted a first round of talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Islamabad on April 11, but the negotiations ended without a breakthrough. A second round of talks has yet to take place.

“One of our problems is that the Americans frequently make contradictory statements, conflicting messages, and unreasonable exaggerations,” Araghchi said on Friday. He added that such remarks run counter to “any path of negotiation or diplomacy .”

Araghchi made the comments on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, held on May 14 and 15 under India ’s chairmanship. The gathering was overshadowed by divisions over the Iran conflict and ended without a joint statement.

Despite the impasse, Araghchi said Tehran had received messages indicating Washington was willing to continue talks.

His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest response, calling it “totally unacceptable” and warning that the ceasefire was on “life support.”

During a visit to China, Trump said he discussed the conflict with Chinese President Xi Jinping, claiming Beijing supported efforts to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

In an interview, Trump said China remained interested in buying Iranian oil but wanted the Strait of Hormuz reopened to shipping.

“He said he’s not going to give military equipment. That’s a big statement,” Trump said, referring to Xi.

Trump added that Xi “would like to see Hormuz Strait opened,” amid ongoing tensions over the key oil transit route. Recent reports said Trump and Xi discussed Iran, energy stability and the Strait of Hormuz during their meeting in Beijing.

Trump also said the talks covered trade , claiming Xi had agreed to order 200 Boeing aircraft.

“Boeing wanted 150. He got 200,” Trump said, describing the reported order as a major boost for U.S. jobs.

The remarks come as Washington continues efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, while tensions with Iran remain high. China has publicly supported reopening the waterway and has denied allegations that it is supplying weapons to Tehran.

Women in Dinajpur are wading through polluted water near the Barapukuria Coal Mine to collect coal dust, driven by economic hardship worsened by rising global fuel prices. Working in shifts, they spend hours in hazardous conditions , facing storms, contaminated water, and dangerous animals while earning small amounts that often fail to cover basic living costs. Many report long-term health problems, including skin and respiratory issues, yet continue due to a lack of alternative income. The mine, operated by a subsidiary of the state-owned Petrobangla, is the country’s only active underground coal facility. The situation is compounded by global energy supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East, particularly affecting routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned that disruptions to energy supply chains caused by tensions in the Middle East could have a prolonged “domino effect” on ASEAN economies, even if the situation stabilises. Speaking during a regional meeting in Cebu, he highlighted concerns over energy security, food stability, and the welfare of citizens abroad, noting that damage to infrastructure and trust in global systems may persist for years. Marcos also called for peace among the United States , Israel, and Iran, urging all sides to cease hostilities. The Philippines, like many in Southeast Asia, remains highly dependent on Middle Eastern energy supplies, with a significant portion passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The maps that show why Iran is how it is

Iran has been at the centre of the world's attention, but it is little understood.

Whether you are a geography geek or a US president, maps are a good place to start.

From the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, and the Caucasus, Iran borders seven countries on land and six more across water.

It is also one of the world ’s oldest continuous civilisations, with a history that spans more than 4,000 years.

Today, with nearly 90 million people and a landmass exceeding 1.6 million square kilometres, Iran stands as one of the Middle East’s largest and most consequential states.

Iran’s terrain is defined by mountains and arid expanses, with little continuous flat land. The Zagros and Alborz mountain ranges dominate much of the landscape, while the Iranian Plateau forms its core.

To the east, vast deserts such as the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut stretch across large swathes of the country. These physical features are not just geographic, but they also shape settlement patterns, climate conditions and the development of infrastructure.

Historically, Iran was the centre of powerful empires that influenced language, trade, science and culture far beyond its borders. That legacy still runs through modern Iran, visible in its identity and regional reach. Despite invasions by Greeks, Ottomans, Russians and the British, the country has maintained a strong sense of sovereignty and identity.

Iran is far more complex, both from the inside and the outside. Farsi remains the dominant language, but the country is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including Azeris, Kurds, Baloch and Arabs, all of whom contribute to its cultural and political fabric.

As an energy giant, Iran sits on some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves , holding roughly 10% of global oil and 15% of natural gas resources.

That alone makes it a major player in global energy markets. Despite heavy international sanctions, Iran continues to export large volumes of oil, primarily to China, demonstrating its resilience and continued relevance in global supply chains.

Its economy, valued at over $400 billion, blends state control with private enterprise, anchored by energy, manufacturing and a growing technology sector.

Modern Iran, however, cannot be understood without the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It overthrew a Western-backed monarchy and replaced it with a theocratic system that still defines the country today.

And since the Revolution, Iran has pursued an independent and often confrontational foreign policy , positioning itself as a regional power and a counterweight to Western influence.

Its network of regional alliances, often referred to as the “Axis of Resistance”, extends its influence beyond its borders, reaching into Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Many of these connections relate to Iran's position as the dominant power of the Shia sect of Islam. In other cases, allies were drawn to Tehran by a mutual hatred of Israel.

The country is also enduring one of its worst environmental crises in decades, after more than five consecutive years of drought have pushed it toward what experts describe as “water bankruptcy.” Reservoirs are drying up, major cities are nearing “day zero” water shortages, and as many as 28 million people now face unreliable access to water.

Even geography beyond its borders carries political weight.

The body of water to its south has been known in Iran and elsewhere for over 2,500 years as the “Persian Gulf.” Still, some Arab states refer to it as the “Arabian Gulf,” creating an ongoing geopolitical dispute.

For Iran, the name is not just symbolic; it is tied to history, identity and sovereignty.

At the edge of Iran’s southern coastline lies its most powerful strategic asset: the Strait of Hormuz.

This narrow waterway connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and carries more than 20% of the world’s oil supply.

It is one of the most critical chokepoints in global trade. Iran controls the northern side as well as a series of islands, and that gives it enormous leverage.

Over the decades, Tehran has repeatedly threatened to disrupt traffic through the strait during times of conflict.

And in 2026, those threats became reality, sending shocks through global energy markets.

At the same time, geopolitical tensions have sharply intensified. Following Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites in February 2026, the United States joined the conflict with direct attacks, triggering a broader regional confrontation that continued for days.

The situation has since escalated into a wider crisis affecting global energy routes. Iran has launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit chokepoint, have sent shocks through global markets.

In an interaction with Viory, Alavi said the president of a World Cup host nation should be offering assurances to participating teams, not raising doubts about their safety.

“The president of the host country for the World Cup, rather than offering a welcome or saying that everything is ready here, declares that they are not prepared to host or ensure the safety of one team,” Alavi said.

He added that the tournament had become “completely intertwined with politicisation” despite FIFA’s efforts to keep football separate from political tensions.

“It is FIFA’s duty, as the institution responsible for legislation, supervision, and enforcement, to prevent this phenomenon from becoming even more political,” Alavi said.

His remarks followed Trump’s March 12 post on Truth Social, in which he said Iran’s national team was welcome at the World Cup but questioned whether it was appropriate for them to participate “for their own life and safety.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, but Iran are scheduled to play all three of their Group G matches in the United States. The team will face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles before playing Egypt in Seattle.

Alavi said seeking alternative venues for Iran’s matches was “not possible” under FIFA protocols.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington had no objection to Iranian athletes taking part in the tournament, but suggested that members of Iran’s delegation with links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps could face restrictions.

Araghchi said the discussions covered the war, efforts to end the conflict, ongoing negotiations, Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme, sanctions , bilateral relations, and the Strait of Hormuz.

“The issue of the Strait of Hormuz was one of our serious topics of discussion,” Araghchi said.

He added that Chinese officials believe Iran’s position has changed since the war .

“Our Chinese friends also believe that Iran after the war is different from Iran before the war,” he said, adding that a new phase of cooperation between Iran and other countries lies ahead.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Beijing supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty and national security , while welcoming Tehran’s willingness to pursue a political solution through diplomacy.

The talks came as media reports suggested the United States and Iran could be moving closer to a deal. Araghchi arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for diplomatic consultations ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump ’s planned visit to China on May 14.

Trump on Wednesday threatened to resume bombing Iran at a “much higher level and intensity” if Tehran fails to agree to a deal.

Earlier, he announced a pause in “Project Freedom,” a U.S. operation aimed at escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz, to allow time to assess whether an agreement with Iran can be finalised. However, Trump said the U.S. naval blockade would remain in “full force.”

“Although we have kept in touch through phone calls and various other means, since the United States and Israel launched their illegal war against Iran, a war that has been ongoing, our stance remains adhering to the principle of peaceful coexistence,” Wang said.

Araghchi reportedly thanked China for its support during the conflict and said cooperation between the two countries would deepen.

“Iran appreciates China's firm stance and especially the condemnation of the United States and Israel... China is a close friend of Iran, and in the current circumstances, our cooperation will be even stronger. Iran will only accept a just and comprehensive agreement,” he said.

Araghchi arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for diplomatic consultations expected to focus on bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.

The meeting came amid continued tensions in the Strait of Hormuz following the conflict between the US and Iran.

“The operation is over. Epic Fury is... the President notified Congress. We're done with that stage of it. We're now on to this project of freedom,” Rubio said.

His remarks came as tensions continued in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route affected by the conflict between the United States and Iran.

Later on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced a “pause” in what he called “Project Freedom,” a plan aimed at guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, Trump warned that Iran would be “blown off the face of the earth” if it attacked US vessels.

The United States and Iran have given conflicting accounts regarding recent incidents in the Strait. Washington claimed that two vessels had passed through the waterway, while Iran denied the claim.

Around 2,000 ships remain stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran blocking passage for what it describes as “unfriendly” vessels, while the US continues restrictions on Iranian ports.

Working from his studio in Varamin, Keshavarz crafts intricate sculptures by reimagining the shapes and forms of salvaged metal pieces. He says his creative process begins with observing scrap materials and identifying familiar patterns.

“The ideas I get for sculptures mostly start with me looking at pieces of scrap,” he explained. “I pay close attention to see what animal or human form they resemble, then visualise and transform them into a sculpture.”

Footage from his workshop shows a range of large-scale creations, including towering human figures, oversized faces, and imaginative alien forms—all assembled from repurposed metal.

Abolfazl Zohrevand, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the approach undermines national sovereignty and reflects unequal power dynamics.

Zohrevand compared the negotiation model to the 2020 killing of George Floyd in the United States.

“In their view, negotiation is like one side being the American police and the other side like Mr. George Floyd’s neck under the policeman's knee. We do not accept such an equation at all. We are a powerful country, and we strongly stand by and defend our national security interests,” he added.

George Floyd, an African American man, died in 2020 after US police officers knelt on his neck for several minutes in Minneapolis. The incident led to widespread protests across the United States against police violence.

On April 8, Trump announced a two-week truce with Iran to allow negotiations aimed at resolving the crisis. The truce was later extended “until Tehran submits its proposals,” without a specified deadline.

A round of negotiations between the US and Iran, mediated by Pakistan, took place in Islamabad on April 11 but did not produce an agreement. A second round has not yet been scheduled.

The demonstration in Jerusalem saw protesters accusing the government of Benjamin Netanyahu of fuelling in security through prolonged conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Marchers chanted slogans, held signs demanding an end to the war, and called for political change, with some former soldiers reportedly refusing service in protest. The rally is part of a broader wave of unrest across Israel, driven by criticism of the government’s handling of security, military strategy and the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, as well as demands for new elections and greater accountability.

Footage from the scene showed collapsed buildings, debris scattered along roadsides, and heavy machinery clearing wreckage after the strikes, Viory reports.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said Israeli attacks on Habbouch and Al-Zarariyeh killed eight people , including a child and two women, and wounded 21 others.

The Israeli army had earlier issued evacuation warnings to residents of several towns and villages in southern Lebanon, including Habbouch. It later said it had carried out strikes on Hezbollah targets in the south, claiming to have killed fighters and destroyed about 50 Hezbollah-linked infrastructure sites.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said the death toll from Israeli military operations since March 2 had reached 2,618 by May 1, with 8,094 people injured.

The strikes come despite a U.S.-announced ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that took effect on April 17 and was later extended by three weeks. Both Israel and Hezbollah have continued to accuse each other of violating the truce.

Israel has also maintained what it calls a “yellow line” in southern Lebanon, a buffer zone where residents have been warned not to return. The Israeli military says its presence is aimed at countering Hezbollah activity, while Lebanese residents and officials have accused Israel of preventing displaced civilians from going back to their homes.

“Mossad has become a highly effective offensive and defensive organisation,” Barnea stated on Tuesday, April 28, highlighting coordination with the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in both defensive and offensive actions.

“We worked shoulder to shoulder alongside the IDF, [...] exerting influence based on relative advantages and a true partnership in striking targets in the heart of Tehran, thwarting senior officials [and] achieving air superiority,” he said.

Barnea said the agency’s activities this year in Lebanon and Iran “broke boundaries” and extended its operational reach.

“We obtained strategic and tactical intelligence at the core of the enemy's secrets. We demonstrated new and groundbreaking operational capabilities in the target countries,” he asserted.

He added that the operations have “strengthened” Israel’s position and emphasised continued readiness and intelligence efforts.

“We are committed to operational intelligence audacity and we are committed to the principle of action. We will not rest on our laurels when facing a threat. We will act with full force,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference in Herzliya on Sunday, April 26, Bennett described the move as a national effort.

"I am happy to announce to you that tonight, together with my friend Yair Lapid, I am doing the most Zionist and most patriotic act we have ever done for our country," Bennett said.

Bennett stated that if he returns to office, he will establish a state commission to investigate the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, a step he said the current government has not taken.

“On the first day of a new government led by me, we will establish a state commission of inquiry into the October massacre to bring truth to the families and answers to all the people of Israel." He also said his administration would introduce a limit of eight years for a prime minister’s tenure.

Lapid, who currently leads the opposition, said Bennett would head the new party and described him as capable of leading the country.

He added that a unified opposition could defeat the current government, referencing Peter Magyar's landslide win against Viktor Orban in the recent elections in Hungary.

"After 16 years in power, Orban lost. It happened because people believed change was possible. They united behind a single candidate, fought for their country, and won. That's why Bennett and I are here."

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has faced criticism over his handling of regional conflicts and allegations that he has avoided accountability for failures during his time in office.

Bennett and Lapid previously formed a coalition that removed Netanyahu from power in 2021, ending his 12-year rule. The coalition lasted 18 months before Netanyahu returned to office in November 2022.
