Footage from the event showed protesters marching through the streets carrying Italian flags and lit torches, alongside a large banner reading “Honour to the fallen comrades.”

Some participants were seen raising their hands in a Nazi salute while chanting “Heil Hitler” during the procession.

The gathering later moved to Via Paladini, where attendees paid homage and laid flowers at Sergio Ramelli’s memorial site.

Sergio Ramelli was a 19-year-old militant from the Youth Front, the youth branch of the Italian Social Movement party. He was killed on April 29, 1975, in Milan in a political assassination carried out by militants belonging to the left-wing Workers Vanguard.

Philippines challenges ‘ISIS hotspot’ label following link to Bondi Beach gunmen

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the National Security Council (NSC) found no evidence supporting allegations that a father and son accused in the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney received terrorist training in the Philippines prior to the incident on December 14.

Castro said the President strongly objected to what he described as sweeping and misleading characterisations of the Philippines as an “ISIS training hotspot."

According to the NSC, there is currently no validated information confirming that the suspects underwent any form of extremist training while in the country, despite reports circulating in foreign media.

“The Philippine authorities, in coordination with international partners, continue to verify all available information, but no evidence has been presented to support claims that the country was used for terrorist training,” the NSC said in a statement read by Castro.

This follows reports by overseas outlets that described the Philippines, particularly parts of the south, as an ISIS-linked training hub.

For example, a New York Post report claimed the suspects had spent time in a “Third World ISIS hotspot” before the attack, citing unnamed sources. Separately, the New York Times reported that the suspects had travelled to southern Philippines, where ISIS-linked groups have operated, but said their activities there remained unclear.

The NSC said reports failed to reflect the current security situation in the Philippines, noting that ISIS-affiliated groups have been significantly weakened since the 2017 siege of Marawi.

It cited assessments by the United Nations and the United States government indicating that these groups now operate in a fragmented and diminished capacity, with violence in Mindanao largely driven by long-standing local conflicts and clan feuds rather than organised ISIS operations.

The council said the country’s domestic security environment had seen major improvements in recent years as a result of sustained counterterrorism efforts.

“These developments reflect the continued work of our security forces and the resilience of our communities in promoting peace , order and development across the nation,” the NSC said.

Castro added that Marcos has instructed the Anti-Terrorism Council and other security agencies to remain vigilant against any potential threats and to continue strengthening cooperation with international partners to protect national security.

"Because under the Anti-Mafia Law, all those who participate in a crime, in this case the blood of three homicides, are responsible," the minister said during a press conference in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

So far, nine people have been detained in connection with the murder of Lara Gutierrez, 15, Brenda del Castillo, 20, and Morena Verdi, 20, who were tortured and dismembered during a live broadcast on a social network, for a closed group of 45 people.

The Minister of Security warned that those who watched the video will also be brought to justice . "The 45 who say they saw the video, will all receive the maximum penalty that the highest-ranking member of that organisation will receive," Bullrich stated.

Bullrich also highlighted the cooperation between the police agencies of Bolivia and Peru in detaining some of the alleged perpetrators, including Victor Sotacuro, Matias Agustin Ozorio, and Tony Janzen Valverde Victoriano, known as 'Pequeno J'.

The victims were tortured, murdered and buried in the yard of a house in Florencio Varela, where their bodies were found five days after they disappeared.

Authorities in Argentina classified the case as aggravated homicide, premeditated by two or more individuals, with treachery, cruelty, and gender-based violence.

Argentina shaken by triple femicide as families demand justice and links to narco-violence probed: Video

The killings, which investigators say may be tied to international narcotics networks, were reportedly livestreamed in a closed social media group to dozens of viewers. Forensic reports revealed the victims were tortured before being killed and dismembered. Police later detained at least three suspects, including two found attempting to clean blood from the crime scene. A burnt-out vehicle allegedly used to transport the victims was also discovered nearby, reinforcing suspicions of narco involvement.

The case has triggered nationwide protests, with thousands marching from Plaza de Mayo to the National Congress in Buenos Aires, and rallies also taking place in La Plata, Rosario, Córdoba and Neuquén. Demonstrators carried banners reading “Not one less” and accused the state of complicity through its failure to protect women. Feminist activist Victoria denounced the crime as a “narco-feminicide,” saying this to Viory: “This reveals once again the complicity of the state and the police with the narcos.”

Families of the victims joined the demonstrations, expressing grief and anger. Other relatives of past femicide victims also took to the streets, insisting that systematic gender-based killings remain unpunished in Argentina.

Buenos Aires provincial authorities, while confirming the investigation is ongoing, have not ruled out narco-related motives. Security Minister Javier Alonso acknowledged the atrocity had been broadcast online, calling it one of the most shocking crimes in recent memory. With Argentina facing rising rates of femicide and violence against women, campaigners insist the state must not only investigate the perpetrators but also address the structural failures that allow such crimes to persist.

In a video address recorded in Jerusalem, Netanyahu compared the accusations to propaganda tactics used by Nazi Germany’s Joseph Goebbels. “Somebody has fabricated a monstrous big lie that Israel had something to do with Charlie Kirk's horrific murder. This is insane. It is false. It is outrageous,” he said.

Kirk, 31, was shot dead at a public event in Utah earlier this week, sparking widespread outrage in the United States. The activist, a prominent supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was well known for mobilising young conservatives and for his staunch support of Israel.

Netanyahu praised Kirk as “a century talent who defended freedom,” revealing that the late activist had written him a personal letter months ago. “One of my greatest joys as a Christian, he said, is advocating for Israel and forming alliances with Jews to protect Judeo-Christian civilisation.

He encouraged me to make the case directly to the American people about how vital Israel is to U.S. national security. He told me, ‘The Holy Land is so important to my life it pains me to see support for Israel slip away,’” Netanyahu recounted.

Why South Sudan has charged first Vice-President Machar with murder and treason

The allegations stem primarily from a March assault on a military base in Nasir, Upper Nile State, in which more than 250 soldiers and a general were reportedly killed.

Machar, who has been under house arrest since late March, is accused of being involved with the White Army, a loosely organised militia largely composed of fighters from the Nuer ethnic group, and using “political and military structures” to influence or direct their operations during the attack.

In addition to Machar, seven individuals aligned with his Sudan People ’s Liberation Movement/Army-in Opposition (SPLM-IO) have also been formally charged and suspended from their government posts.

Among them are Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol and Lt. General Gabriel Duop Lam, Deputy Chief of Staff of the army. A further 13 suspects remain at large.

President Salva Kiir, whose political relationship with Machar has been uneasy since the 2018 peace deal ended South Sudan’s five-year civil war, has suspended Machar as first vice president following the charges.

Machar’s spokesperson dismissed the charges as a “political witch-hunt”, arguing that the judicial system in South Sudan is not independent but instead “politically directed courts”. The SPLM-IO has warned that the move threatens to undermine the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement and could risk reigniting armed conflict.

Roads to Machar’s residence in Juba have been blocked by soldiers and tanks, heightening concerns about the potential for escalation. International actors, including the United Nations and the African Union, have urged restraint.

While Kirk was not an elected official, his assassination on Wednesday has heightened fears about rising political violence in the United States.

“People are scared to death in this building,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., who has had police stationed outside his home since a constituent tried to kill him last year, Semafor reports . “Not many of them will say it publicly, but they’re running to [House Speaker Mike Johnson] talking about security.”

Here are a few security measures lawmakers are undertaking to ensure their personal safety:

Cancelled rallies and indoor-only events

Several lawmakers have already begun scaling back their public appearances. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., postponed a planned rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, citing safety concerns.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., also said she will no longer hold outdoor events “anytime soon” after Kirk was killed while speaking outdoors at Utah Valley University.

Arming themselves

Mace revealed she now plans to carry a gun “at all times,” indicating some level of anxiety among elected officials. She is also reconsidering whether to drive her own car and has requested additional security guidance from the House Sergeant at Arms for her Washington office.

“Any elected official across the country, if you are vocal, your life is at risk,” Mace said. “I have to deal with children who think they’re going to be murdered at school; I have to deal with employees right now who are afraid to come to work,” she is quoted.

Police presence and heightened protocols

Police are already visible outside multiple lawmakers’ homes and offices. For some, that has become the new normal. Security protocols, from access checks to staff safety drills, are being tightened. Behind closed doors, members from both sides of the aisle are urging leadership for more resources, surveillance, and protective details.

The shooting happened on Wednesday, September 10, during an outdoor event attended by around 3,000 people . At the time of the incident, Kirk was answering a question on gun violence.

Video footage shows Kirk reaching for his neck and collapsing from his chair, with visible bleeding from his neck. He was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital but died hours later. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the incident as a “political assassination”.

Ongoing manhunt for the sniper

Trump reacts to the killing

Charlie Kirk had played a key role in connecting young voters to Donald Trump’s political base. Trump called the killing an act of “terrorism” and blamed it on radical left-wing rhetoric.

“For years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today. And it must stop right now,” Trump said .

He also ordered that all U.S. government flags be flown at half-staff until Sunday to honour Kirk.

He is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and their two children —a son and a daughter.

Tirop, a celebrated long-distance runner who set a world record in the women’s 10-kilometre road race in Germany and won two World Athletics Championship bronze medals, was found stabbed at her home in Iten, Rift Valley, on October 13, 2021. She was laid to rest on October 23, 2021, the day she would have turned 26.

The main suspect in her murder, her husband Ibrahim Rotich, has failed to appear in court yet again, leaving Tirop’s family devastated and angry over the slow pace of the case.

“I don't know what the court is going to tell us today, and we don't want them to play any games,” said Dinah Tirop, Agnes’s mother. “We want that man to be found and apprehended. That man did us no good, and the court is taking it lightly. Why is the court taking this case lightly, while this man killed my child?,” she shared with Viory.

Kenyan Olympian murder trial postponed as husband and prime suspect fails to attend court

Agnes’s father, Vincent Tirop, echoed the family’s frustration. “Since the year 2021, it's been about five years now, but we have not gotten justice for Agnes. Now we are calling on the government, especially the Judiciary and Chief Justice Martha Koome. We want to see justice for our daughter granted,” he said outside the Eldoret High Court, where family members gathered wearing shirts printed with Agnes’s photo.

High Court Judge Robert Wananda addressed the case, acknowledging updates from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) while emphasizing the sensitivity of ongoing efforts to locate the suspect. “Having heard from Corporal Ndeto from the DCI, who has briefed the court on the progress made… I grant the DCI through Corporal Ndeto more time to proceed and continue with the efforts to trace and apprehend the accused person,” Justice Wananda said.

The judge set the next court mention for September 18, 2025, but assured the family that if Rotich is apprehended earlier, he will be brought before the court immediately.

Moïse was shot 12 times at his residence in Port-au-Prince on July 7, 2021, a killing that stunned the world and exposed Haiti’s growing vulnerability to lawlessness and foreign meddling.

Investigations have been repeatedly derailed by gang violence, death threats to judges, and the resignation of court officials fearing for their lives. To date, not one of the 20 suspects imprisoned in Haiti has faced trial, despite charges being filed.

Several key suspects, including former National Palace security chief Dimitri Hérard, escaped in a mass prison break last year after gangs stormed Haiti’s main jails. Court proceedings now take place in private residences under armed guard, after the capital’s courthouse was seized by criminal groups controlling over 85% of Port-au-Prince, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) .

The case implicates 51 suspects, including 17 former Colombian soldiers, three Haitian officials, and figures linked to a Miami-based security firm. Some detainees maintain they were contracted for infrastructure security and had no role in the murder.

Allegations of torture, forced confessions, and denial of legal rights have been raised by defence lawyers. One Colombian, Jheyner Alberto Carmona Flores, testified that he suffered “psychological and physical torture,” claiming he had no knowledge of Moïse’s whereabouts during the attack.

Despite chaos in Haiti, the United States has prosecuted 11 individuals connected to the plot, with five pleading guilty. Court documents from the U.S. Department of Justice allege that the original plan was to detain Moïse, but it shifted to assassination after logistical failures. The U.S. trial is set for March 2026.

The revived Haitian probe, now overseen by six judges including Claude Jean and Phemond Damicy, is seen as a critical step toward accountability, though many remain sceptical.

“The local investigation has exposed the systemic collapse of justice in Haiti,” said Bruner Ulysse, a Haitian lawyer and historian. “International efforts may help, but true justice still feels out of reach.”

The case has significant global implications, as it reveals the fragility of governance in Haiti, a nation already overwhelmed by criminal networks and political vacuums.

The findings, released this week by Caribe Afirmativo, a specialised NGO that monitors human rights violations, highlight a worsening pattern of hate-fuelled aggression and systemic impunity.

According to the report, 41 LGBTQ+ individuals have been murdered so far in 2025, representing a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The data reflects rising homicide rates but also points to an alarming consistency in the timeline: e very 48 hours, an LGBTQ+ person is killed in Colombia.

“The report presents heartbreaking figures that constitute an urgent call to eradicate the dynamics of prejudice in the country,” said Iris Marín Ortiz, Colombia’s Ombudswoman, at the report’s presentation in Bogotá.

"Every two days, according to this report, one person is murdered, an LGBTQ+ person, and every two days, one person from this population has been a victim of sexual violence. The report presents heartbreaking figures that constitute an urgent call to eradicate the dynamics of prejudice in the country," Iris added.

But homicides are only part of the picture. The NGO also recorded that, on average, an LGBTQ+ person is sexually assaulted every two days, painting a broader picture of entrenched violence, discrimination, and systemic neglect.

Forensic investigators confirmed the identities of the remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition. The discovery followed the arrest of five suspects, three already appeared in court.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, one of the suspects led the police to the location of the bodies, the Star reports.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killings; however, a multi-agency task force is still carrying out investigations.

Ndlovu, founder of Capital Live FM in Mamelodi, was a well-known figure in regional media circles. His death has drawn reactions from government officials and media organisations, highlighting broader concerns over journalist safety in South Africa.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, visited the Ndlovu family on 4 May and announced plans to visit the radio station where Ndlovu worked. He condemned the killings and described them as part of a broader pattern of violence in the country, acknowledging Ndlovu’s commitment to public service through his work in the media.

"Mr. Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public. His loss, along with Ms. Mdhluli’s, is a tragic reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities," Morolong stated.

The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) in South Africa issued statements expressing concern over the deaths.

The discovery was made by Warrior Searchers of Jalisco, a group of families looking for their missing loved ones.

They were tipped off anonymously and called the authorities , who later confirmed the presence of burnt bones and bullet casings. The group believes the remains belong to people who disappeared.

The ranch had already been raided by authorities months ago at which time 10 armed men were arrested, two kidnapped people were rescued, and a body was found.

However, police did not fully search the area. The ovens and bones were hidden under dirt and bricks, making them difficult to find during the first inspection.

The site is believed to have been used by the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal groups.

The cartel is involved in drug and human trafficking and is known for its extreme violence. The ranch had an obstacle course, suggesting it may have been a training ground for new recruits.

When searchers arrived this week, they found clothes, bags, and shoes scattered across the ground. Within hours, they discovered three underground ovens filled with remains. It is still unclear how many people were burned there.

Jalisco has the highest number of missing people in Mexico, with nearly 15,000 reported cases.

Nationwide, over 100,000 people are officially listed as disappeared, but the real number may be even higher since many families are too afraid to report cases.

UAE reaction to Afghan Ministry attack

The recent attack on the Afghan Ministry of Refugees has drawn international condemnation, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, which expressed its sorrow over the assassination of Refugee Minister Khalil Rahman Haqqani. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explicitly denounced the violence, extending condolences to the families of the victims and wishing for a swift recovery for the injured, Dubaieye reports.

Killed minister buried

In a notable escalation of violence attributed to IS-Khorasan (IS-K), Khalil-Ur-Rahman Haqqani's funeral has underscored the attack's significance, marking an alarming challenge for the Taliban’s governance. Haqqani, known for his leadership role in the Haqqani network and with a bounty of $5 million on his head, was targeted in a suicide bombing that inflicted casualties among ministry personnel. According to the VOA , Global entities such as the UN and EU have joined the condemnation, stressing the persistent threat of terrorism in Afghanistan, despite the Taliban’s assertions of weakening IS-K capabilities.

UN condemns minister’s death

The UN has also voiced its disapproval of this heinous act, underscoring that such terrorism undermines the quest for stability in Afghanistan, Barrons reports. The attack that claimed Haqqani’s life took place at the ministry during an official meeting and represents the first assault on a minister since the Taliban's resurgence in 2021, despite a general trend of reduced violence in recent months. Furthermore, Haqqani’s historical ties to the Haqqani network, alongside existing US and UN sanctions against him, highlight the complexities entwined with leadership in the region.

ISIS claims responsibility

Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed Afghanistan’s minister for refugees at his office in Kabul, AFP reports. Taliban authorities had already blamed Isis for the “cowardly attack”, which a government official said had killed minister Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani and a number of his colleagues on Wednesday. The explosion – the first attack targeting a minister since the Taliban returned to power in 2021 – was caused by a suicide blast.

US withdrawal from Afghanistan

Amidst the backdrop of these tragic events, the political landscape surrounding the US withdrawal from Afghanistan remains contentious, CBS News reports. During a recent House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended the administration's decision, arguing that it was essential for reallocating resources and preventing advantages for adversaries like Russia. However, a partisan divide was evident, with Republican lawmakers, spearheaded by Chairman Michael McCaul, criticising the withdrawal's execution and citing the loss of American lives as a harrowing consequence. The current political discourse has become increasingly fragmented, with former President Trump promising accountability for what he characterises as mismanagement of the withdrawal, showcasing the ongoing ramifications of this geopolitical decision across various fronts.

State ordered to pay $24 million for man unlawfully murdered by police

The High Court of Guyana has delivered a landmark ruling, ordering the State to compensate $24 million for the unlawful killing of Quindon Bacchus, a father of one who was shot dead by police in 2022. Investigations revealed serious inconsistencies in the police’s account of events that led to Bacchus being shot six times during an alleged undercover operation involving an unlicensed firearm. This ruling by Justice Nigel Niles not only provides recognition of the breach of Bacchus’s right to life but also aims to advance police accountability in Guyana.

Guyana president says new project to half electricity costs

Guyana President Irfaan Ali has announced a transformative Gas-to-Energy project expected to reduce electricity costs by half within the next year. This 300 MW natural gas-fired plant at Wales, in the disputed Essequibo region will tap into resources from the Stabroek Block, Offshore Guyana and aims for integration into the national grid by 2025. However, the project is encountering delays due to ongoing arbitration, which could see the contractor facing significant financial penalties for these setbacks. In addition to this project, the government is exploring further energy capacity enhancements through additional natural gas plants and renewable energy projects.

Indian PM Modi expected in Guyana

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised for a historic visit to Guyana, marking a notable event as it is the first visit by an Indian PM since 1968. During his three-day visit, agreements on energy and defence are anticipated, alongside meetings with President Ali and speeches to the Guyanese parliament. He will also engage in a Caricom-India Summit focusing on improved collaboration in energy, agriculture, health, and technology.

Guyana the first developing nation to submit climate transparency report

Guyana has become the first developing nation to submit a Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This report details Guyana’s greenhouse gas emissions and national climate strategies in adherence to the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement.

Migrant horrors and violence against transgender women in Guyana

The Inter-American Human Rights Commission has highlighted the challenges faced by migrants, sex workers, and transgender women in Guyana related to gender-based violence. The testimony of activists and government representatives revealed systemic issues that exacerbate vulnerability, including fear of legal repercussions for seeking help among migrant women. The government, led by Minister Gail Teixeira, is reportedly advancing legislative measures to support these vulnerable populations, reaffirming its commitment to uphold the rights of all women in Guyana and to address the scourge of violence against them.

Elevated tariffs

In a detailed report, CareEdge outlines India’s potential advantages stemming from proposed U.S. tariff increases on Chinese imports by Donald Trump, which may reach up to 60%. This could catalyse a shift among U.S. companies toward alternative manufacturing locations, thereby potentially enhancing India's manufacturing capabilities and export economy. However, the report raises concerns about the broader implications of elevated tariffs, including global trade disruptions, inflationary pressures, and a possible deceleration in trade growth, which could negatively impact demand for Indian exports. Mint reports that Trump's agenda includes substantial tariffs on Mexican imports to inhibit Chinese firms from evading U.S. tariffs. India's success in leveraging these dynamics will be contingent upon substantial improvements in its industrial infrastructure and overall business landscape.

Militants murder woman

A tragic event occurred in Manipur's Bishnupur district, where a woman working in paddy fields was shot dead by suspected militants on November 9, 2024. The violent incident transpired in the Saiton area during a routine agricultural activity, igniting local tensions and fostering resentment towards central forces perceived as ineffective. This incident is part of a distressing trend of ethnic violence in Manipur that has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023, the Indian Express reports.

Seaplane demo flight operations

Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has initiated seaplane demo flight operations from Vijayawada to Srisailam, marking a pivotal moment in the state's efforts to boost tourism and create job opportunities. Naidu lauded this move as a leap forward for water-based aviation in Andhra Pradesh, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support. The Union Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu, detailed that the newly introduced seaplane service will drastically cut travel time from eight hours to approximately 45-50 minutes, with comprehensive services anticipated to commence by early 2025. According to The Hindustan Times , this initiative is heralded as a transformative development for the regional economy and tourism sector, particularly following updated guidelines from the DGCA that accommodate seaplane operations in India.

Former MP Prajwal Revanna was denied bail by the Karnataka High Court in two rape cases, prompting him to appeal to the Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear his case. Revanna, who hails from a high-profile political family, faces serious allegations of sexual misconduct linked to several women. The emergence of videos purportedly depicting these incidents just prior to an impending election spurred the establishment of a special inquiry team, according to NDTV . Following an overseas trip to Germany post-allegations, Revanna returned to India, resulting in his arrest on May 31. The fallout from these claims significantly impacted his political career, leading to a loss of over 40,000 votes in the election and subsequent suspension from the Janata Dal Secular (JDS) party.

Canadian study permits for Indian students

In a significant policy shift, Canada has announced the termination of its expedited Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme for international students, primarily due to concerns regarding programme integrity and escalating diplomatic tensions with India. Initially launched in 2018, the SDS was instrumental in expediting visa approvals, particularly for Indian students, with an impressive approval rate of nearly 95%. As of November 8, 2024, all applications for study permits will revert to standard processing channels, which may considerably lengthen waiting periods, Zee News reports. Moreover, Canada has set higher financial prerequisites for prospective study permit candidates and instituted mandatory verification of acceptance letters by educational institutions to enhance programme integrity. These alterations come at a turbulent time in Canada-India relations and could profoundly affect Indian students' desirability to study in Canada, with significant economic implications expected in the educational sector.

Tropical Storm Trami

Tropical Storm Trami has wreaked havoc across the Philippines, causing significant rainfall and resultant floods that have tragically led to fatalities. The adverse weather conditions have necessitated the efforts of rescue workers who are actively engaged in evacuating those in peril, Sky News reports. The storm's trajectory suggests an ongoing threat to the region, raising concerns over disaster preparedness and management protocols in place for future occurrences.

Murder of broadcast journalist

The Philippines has expressed outrage over the murder of broadcast journalist Maria Vilma Rodriguez, aged 56, who was fatally shot in Zamboanga City. The office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for an exhaustive investigation into this grievous act, highlighting it as part of a concerning trend wherein five journalists have lost their lives since Marcos' presidency commenced in June 2022. Notably, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines reported a disconcerting total of 200 journalist fatalities since the restoration of democracy in 1986. According to news agency The Sun , the authorities have apprehended a suspect and are investigating potential familial motives.

Celebrity pastor denies sexual abuse allegations

Adding to the country's tumult, pastor Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church, has vehemently denied fresh allegations of sexual abuse as he testified before a Senate inquiry following his indictment for trafficking and related charges. Quiboloy faces serious accusations from former church members, including grooming minors and compelling followers into labour and sexual acts. He challenged these accusers to advance their claims legally, asserting their allegations to be fabricated, Channel News Asia reports. Victims, such as Teresita Valdehueza, have detailed traumatic experiences involving the pastor, while Yulya Tartova has also alleged coercion into sexual encounters.

Fatalities from the storm

Compounding the situation in the region, Tropical Storm Trami has resulted in 14 confirmed fatalities and compelled thousands of individuals to evacuate their homes. Rescue teams are navigating perilous chest-deep floodwaters to rescue stranded residents from the clutches of torrential rain, which has led to extensive flooding, particularly submerging villages and encasing vehicles in volcanic debris, Daily Journal reported.

Online gambling

In a related context, the Indonesian National Police have successfully repatriated 67 out of 69 citizens who faced arrest in the Philippines for suspected involvement in online gambling and cyber scams. This action followed a crackdown by the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC). According to Indonesian media Jakarta Globe , although two Indonesian nationals remain in custody as suspects, many among the repatriated individuals assert that they were victims of human trafficking. Nevertheless, officials have clarified that a majority identified as participants in both illegal gambling operations and scams. This operation comes in the wake of the Philippines' terminating operations of Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), significantly impacting the workforce across both legitimate and illicit avenues in the sector.

Mass shootings

South Africa is grappling with an alarming increase in mass shootings, highlighted by a recent incident in Lusikisiki that claimed 18 lives. This surge in violence occurs against a backdrop of the nation's high homicide rates, which exceeded 12,000 in just the first half of the year, ENCA reports. Renowned crime expert Mary de Haas offers critical insights into the underlying factors contributing to this escalating crisis.

Murder and crime

In a related case, a man accused of involvement with mass shootings, Siphosoxolo Myekethe faces 18 counts of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Africanews reports that he has opted to waive bail, remaining in custody as legal proceedings unfold. The brutal attacks in Lusikisiki took place across two residences, tragically resulting in the fatalities of 15 women, two men, and a teenage boy, while a two-month-old baby miraculously survived these horrific events. Myekethe was on parole for a prior murder conviction at the time of these incidents, highlighting the complexities surrounding gun violence in South Africa. Despite strict gun laws, the pervasive issue of illegal firearms exacerbates the situation, showcasing the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle this crisis.

Growth among leading grocery retailers

Turning to economic news, South Africa's Trade Intelligence published its bi-annual Corporate Retail Comparative Report (CRCR) for the first half of 2024, revealing stagnation in real growth among the nation's leading grocery retailers. Despite an uptick in turnover, primarily driven by price inflation and an increase in the opening of new stores, major players like Shoprite, Boxer, and Clicks recorded minimal real growth. The report highlighted a concerning trend, with average gross margins sinking to a four-year low of 21.4%, placing pressure on profits and compelling these retailers to invest in technological advancements, supply chain efficiencies, and private label brands. Notably, the competitive landscape is shifting, particularly among high-income consumers, with Checkers showing a marked advantage over Woolworths Food.

Jumia exits SA

On the e-commerce front, Jumia Technologies has announced its exit from South Africa and Tunisia to streamline operations and focus on markets with greater growth potential. The closure will see Jumia cease operations of the online fashion retailer Zando in South Africa, as well as its presence in Tunisia — which together represented a mere 2.7% of total orders and 3% of Gross Merchandise Value in early 2023. CEO Francis Dufay cited challenging macroeconomic conditions and fierce competition as key drivers behind this strategic decision, which will also result in approximately 110 job cuts. The company intends to concentrate on more promising markets, including Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria, where it anticipates enhanced growth opportunities. No plans were disclosed regarding the sale of its discontinued operations, according to Wine.co.za .

Winemaking

In an effort to cultivate talent within the wine sector, South Africa Wine has introduced the 2024 Graduate Placement Programme. This initiative aims to connect skilled tertiary graduates — with a focus on black graduates — to member companies through placement opportunities lasting 6 to 12 months. The programme aspires to widen skills development and create pathways for young South Africans in critical roles spanning viticulture, winemaking, logistics, marketscreener reports. Kachné Ross, the People and Skills Development Manager, underscores the programme's dedication to fostering individual growth while enhancing innovation within the industry. Collaborative efforts with Agrijob will provide recruitment services at no cost to participating member companies, while also offering R5,000 monthly salary contributions for each graduate placed, effectively mitigating hiring expenses. The initiative represents a focused effort to build a diverse workforce, encouraging wine businesses to engage for their mutual benefit.

The demonstration, which has entered its eighth day, has sparked a nationwide outcry, with women demanding justice and accountability. Since the beginning of 2024, 299 women have been killed in Turkey, a nation of 85 million people, the AFP reports.

Chants of "Erdogan assassin! AKP assassin!" echoed through the crowd, directed at Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has been in power since 2002. Protesters accused the government of failing to protect women and turning a blind eye to gender-based violence.

Among the demonstrators was Gulizar Sezer, the mother of femicide victim Sedef Guler. "Where is the state? Where is justice?" Sezer cried out. "The state is as guilty as the criminal who killed my child. I will hold it accountable until the end."

Hülya Gülbahar, a prominent women's rights activist and lawyer, highlighted the shortcomings in enforcing Turkey’s Law No. 6284, which provides protection against domestic violence. “If Law 6284 was properly implemented, thousands of women’s lives would have been saved," Gülbahar said, emphasizing that impunity for perpetrators remains a "systematic state policy."

According to The Monument Counter, a platform that tracks gender-based violence in 2023, the number of femicides reached 416.

Solving human-wildlife conflict

Tanzania is confronting the persistent issue of human-wildlife conflict, particularly with elephants encroaching into agricultural and residential territories. Recent reports from the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) indicate that over 500 elephants have been successfully relocated back to their protected habitats using helicopter assistance from January 2023 to July 2024, reports Big News Network . Key affected areas comprise Lindi, Mara, Kilimanjaro, Morogoro, and Mbeya. In a bid to bolster wildlife conservation and better manage these conflicts, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is set to recruit 1,187 new game rangers over the next two years.

Opposition leader abducted and murdered

In a tragic turn of events, the lifeless body of Ally Kibao, a senior official from Tanzania's opposition CHADEMA party, was discovered on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam following his abduction by armed assailants. His remains exhibited severe injuries, and acid had been inflicted upon his face. This incident potentially jeopardises the reformist reputation of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, particularly as Kibao was kidnapped just a day prior, as reported by Azer News . While a preliminary post-mortem examination has been conducted, a comprehensive autopsy report is anticipated shortly.

Diplomatic ties with Kazakhstan

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has reinforced its diplomatic ties with Tanzania and Mozambique by appointing Yerkin Akhinzhanov as its ambassador to both countries, while he concurrently maintains his ambassadorial role in South Africa. According to KINA , Akhinzhanov brings an extensive diplomatic portfolio, having served as Kazakhstan’s deputy Permanent Representative to the OSCE and the UN, and Minister Counsellor in various missions including those in Norway and the US. He is an alumnus of the Alma-Ata Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

$40 million investment

In a significant economic development, South Korean steel giant POSCO is embarking on a $40 million investment initiative involving Tanzanian enterprise Black Rock Mining, staged over two phases. The initial phase aims to inject $9 million, thereby increasing POSCO's equity in Black Rock Mining from 10.1% to 19.99%. The subsequent funding phase is intended to facilitate the construction of Module 1 of the Mahenge Graphite Project and will confer long-term offtake rights for graphite concentrate produced from Module 2, reports Energy Capital & Power . According to Black Rock Mining CEO John de Vries, this agreement is pivotal for enhancing stakeholder confidence and ensuring funding transparency for the project's production.

Samia reacts to murder of opposition leader

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has publicly expressed her profound grief regarding the murder of opposition CHADEMA leader Mohamed Ali Kibao, urging for a meticulous investigation into the incident. She reinforced the notion that Tanzania is a democracy, where the right to life is paramount, asserting her government's firm stance against acts of violence. CHADEMA Chairman Freeman Mbowe disclosed that Kibao’s body exhibited signs of extreme brutality, including severe beatings and acid burns. The ruling party's Secretary for Ideology, Amos Makalla, extended his condolences and called for thorough police investigations. According to Daily News , this harrowing act has been met with widespread condemnation from various political factions, including ACT Wazalendo, highlighting the pressing concern of political violence in Tanzania. The Police Force is actively pursuing investigations, deploying specialist teams to enhance their investigative capabilities.

A demographic survey conducted by a Kenyan research firm disclosed that at least 11 million women in the country had experienced various forms of physical or sexual violence by their intimate partners. Not only that, from 2016 to 2023, at least 500 women were killed just because of their gender.

Later in March, far away in Latin America, Mexico specifically, a similar protest was replicated when over 180,000 women and allies protested against violence, murder and other forms of vices threatening the lives of women in the country.

Data from the Mexico National Institute of Statistics and Geography revealed an alarming rate of violence perpetrated against women in three years. In 2021, nearly 10 women were murdered in the country every day, culminating in 3427 women that year alone.

Later in 2022, state prosecutors reported that rape and its related violence have reached a peak and were more prevalent amongst girls within the 10-14 age bracket. A total of 4,197 such cases were filed.

The year 2023 was no different. The Secretary of Security and citizens reported that over 2500 women had become victims of homicide and more than 800 of them were femicide victims

These instances are not only limited to Kenya and Mexico. Almost like a plague, it is a phenomenon prevalent in many countries the world over. The recent murder of Rebecca Cheptegei brought a rude reminder of the continued existence of impunity and injustices against women. Without any intentions of invoking emotions, here are some athletes who are victims of femicide.

Agnes Tirop, Kenya

In 2021, the gruesome murder of Agnes Tirop triggered a rave agitation for the protection of women. Her life was snuffed by none other than Ibrahim Rotich, her husband. Tirop’s lifeless body was found in her home with stab wounds. Aside from that, it was reported that her car windows had been smashed. It had only been five weeks after winning the women's 10km marathon in Germany. The Kenyan President at the time, Uhuru Kenyatta, remarked, "It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate, and very sad that we've lost a young and promising athlete. It is even more painful that Agnes, a Kenyan hero by all measures, painfully lost her young life through a criminal act perpetuated by selfish and cowardly people."

Damaris Muthee Mutua, Kenya/Bahrain

A Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete who was a two-time world championship bronze medalist was murdered in 2022. The autopsy report revealed her cause of death as strangulation, allegedly, by her boyfriend Koki Foi, also an athlete with Ethiopian descent. Mutua, a mother of one, held 2 nd place in a 10km race in Angola. “She was an upcoming road runner. People would describe her as someone with very good discipline. Earlier this month, she was third in a very tough half-marathon race in Angola. She was found dead just when her career on the road was picking up," Elias Makori, managing editor for sport at Nation Media Group, told BBC Sport .

Rebecca Cheptegei, Uganda

Cheptegei was set ablaze by her boyfriend following a disagreement. She sustained 75-80% burns on her body and succumbed to her injuries some hours after the incident.
“We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei OLY following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.

The 31-year-old's body was discovered on August 9 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, sparking widespread outrage and demonstrations.

Protesters chanted "We want justice" and held signs reading "No safety, no service." Doctors joined the protests, halting elective services across several states.

The Indian Medical Association has called for a 24-hour nationwide strike starting August 17, urging the implementation of the Central Protection Act to protect healthcare workers.

The victim was found in the hospital's seminar hall, suggesting she was resting during a long shift. An autopsy confirmed sexual assault, and her parents suspect gang rape.

Police have detained a hospital staff member, though there are accusations of mishandling the investigation.

Sexual violence is a major issue in India, with nearly 90 rapes reported daily. This case has drawn comparisons to the 2012 Delhi gang rape, which led to reforms and harsher penalties for rapists.

The skulls were found on July 28 by local children gathering firewood about 40 kilometres (24 miles) west of Kampala.

According to police spokesman Majid Karim, the skulls were located in metallic boxes within a well-constructed underground chamber beneath one of three ruined shrines on a hillside.

"Police swung into action very fast and we got some four, four metallic boxes in a hole that was well built, and we removed them, and brought them to the police station and when we opened them we recovered 17 skulls," Karim told AFP.

The skulls are currently being examined to determine their age, sex, and burial date. Initial examinations revealed that three of the skulls belonged to children.

Karim also mentioned that the search might uncover other body parts, urging locals to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.

Reports suggest that the site may have been used for worship in the past. Police have also linked the suspected owner of the site to the murder of a prominent traditional Baganda leader, Daniel Bbosa, who was killed by hired gunmen in Kampala earlier this year.

"He is a suspect of a murder case of one engineer called Daniel Bossa," Karim said.

The CNE stated that Maduro won re-election with 51.2 percent of the votes.

Rain forecasts

Mexico is experiencing increased rainfall due to a combination of seasonal monsoons, tropical waves, and cyclonic activity. Heavy rain is forecasted for various states, along with strong winds. The country has already surpassed its average rainfall for the year, with reduced drought conditions in many areas. Some states have benefitted more from the rainfall than others. High temperatures are also expected in certain regions, according to Mexico News Daily .

Boxing in Mexico

Female boxers in Mexico, inspired by Olympic contenders like Citlalli Ortiz and Fatima Herrara, are empowering themselves through the sport in a society still grappling with machismo. Traditional gender roles have confined women in the past, but with women like Ortiz making noise in the boxing scene, the mentality is changing. Young girls are looking up to these fighters as role models and are eager to follow in their footsteps. With the legacy of boxing running deep in Mexico, the country is becoming a powerhouse in the sport, particularly in women's boxing, Supersport reports.

Murder

A 12-year-old boy was killed on a Cancun beach by gunmen on jet skis, who were reportedly targeting a rival drug dealer. According to the ABC , the boy, who has not been publicly identified, was not believed to have been the intended target. He and his family were at the beach at the time of the shooting.

Temporary residency

Guatemala has granted temporary residency to 207 Mexican refugees, mostly children, who fled drug violence. They have 30 days of legal status and can request asylum if they choose. The refugees crossed the border into Guatemala to escape cartel violence in their communities. Organizations are providing support and donations to the families. The Mexican government has been urged to protect the communities from cartels. AP News reports that two powerful cartels have been battling for control of smuggling routes in the area, leading to multiple displacements.

“We agree with the prosecution that the way the murder was conducted ‘shocked not only the judicial conscience but even the collective conscience of the society. This case is the rarest of the rare involving a heinous crime. Such cruelty must be stopped. Only Allah would know how they (the deceased's parents) must have been destroyed when they saw that their son was treated that way. Therefore we unanimously decide that there will be only one sentence for all six accused persons, where all of them shall be taken to the gallows where they will be hung to death," Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail, who chaired a three-judge panel during the proceedings said on Tuesday, July 23, according to The Star .

The plan, called the "Digital Wallet," has faced criticism from economists and financing hurdles. The funding will come from the 2024 and 2025 fiscal budgets. The plan has limitations, and exclusion details will be announced soon. The World Bank projected GDP growth of 2.4% for Thailand in 2024. Initially suggested for all Thais 16 and older, the digital wallet payments have been limited to lower-income Thais, Independent.co.uk reports.

Under the leadership of incumbent president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 2024 has been one of the most violent years in the history of Mexico. Dozens of candidates have tragically lost their lives during the lead-up to Mexico's general election.

The most recent bloodshed was the gunning down of a mayoral candidate, Alfredo Cabrera in Guerero on Friday, May 31—just some two days before Sunday's elections.

The latest tragic incident raises the number of candidates who have lost their lives in the 2024 election period to 37. This figure exceeds the total fatalities recorded in the 2021 midterm elections, which stood at 36, according to data from Integralia, a firm specialising in security analysis.

According to a watchdog group, Civic Data, 2023 was the most violent year in Mexico, however, 2024 is taking the crown.

"2023 was the most violent year in our database. And everything suggests that 2024 will be worse," the group said.

These conclude that Mexico's future president's number one job will be to disrupt the works of violence and destruction orchestrated by drug cartels and gangs.

Drug cartel dominance

Gangs and drug cartels happen to run the country, killing and vandalising at the slightest provocation.

In Sunday's elections, which will decide the presidency, nine governorships, and roughly 19,000 local positions, it seems that Mexico's drug cartels and gangs are exerting a greater influence than in previous elections.

In the lead-up to Sunday's elections, there was a noticeable escalation in gang activity, with incidents of shooting at entire campaign gatherings, destruction of ballots, obstruction of polling station establishment, and the display of banners intended to sway voters' decisions.

Julián López, the Citizen Movement party's coordinator in Guerrero, endured a harrowing ordeal when armed assailants kidnapped him and two associates on February 7. The 43-year-old was subjected to physical assault, robbed, forced to kneel by a secluded waste site, and eventually left alone in the dead of night.

According to security expert, David Saucedo, there is a strong possibility of drug gangs attempting to coerce voters into choosing the candidates they endorse, as reported by AP.

“It is reasonable to assume that the cartels will mobilise their support bases during Sunday’s elections,” Saucedo said. “They have loyal voters who they have won over through the distribution of food packages, cash, medicine and infrastructure projects. They will use them to support narco-candidates,” he said.

However, a new dawn seems to be in sight with the tight competition between Claudia Sheinbaum, a former mayor of Mexico City, and Xóchitl Gálvez, also a former mayor of Mexico City's Miguel Hidalgo borough.

Sheinbaum, who focused her campaign on decreasing the homicide rate in Mexico City during her mayoral tenure, may confront significantly more daunting obstacles in replicating this achievement in regions such as Michoacan, where the influence of criminal organisations surpasses anything she faced in the capital.

However, she is unfazed as she promises to lead the country in a way that protects and preserves women and children from violence.

"We're going to make history. I say to the young women, to all the women of Mexico – colleagues, friends, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers – you are not alone," Sheinbaum said during a rally.

Similarly, Xóchitl Gálvez posits that she will be the bravest president ever as she will tackle violence and crime head-on.

"You will have the bravest president, a president who does confront crime," Gálvez added.

Genocide case against Israel

Mexico has joined South Africa's genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice, citing deliberate obstruction of humanitarian assistance and destruction of cultural heritage. Mexico is a signatory to the Genocide Convention and has the right to intervene in cases discussing its interpretation. The move comes as Israel has intensified its attack in the Gaza Strip, leading to protests outside the Israeli embassy in Mexico. The protests were in response to an Israeli strike that killed 45 people in a displacement camp outside Rafah, World Biz reports.

UK ambassador to Mexico dismissed

The UK ambassador to Mexico has been dismissed following allegations that he pointed a gun at a local embassy employee. A video of the incident has been circulating on social media. According to the Financial Times , the video was initially shared on X earlier this week by an anonymous account with the username @subdiplomatic, which was recently created. The footage purportedly shows Jon Benjamin, the UK's ambassador to Mexico, sitting in the passenger seat of a stationary SUV and smiling as he points a gun at someone in the back seat.

Upcoming general elections

Mexico's presidential election is set for Sunday, and a woman is likely to be elected president for the first time. Mexicans living abroad, including those in the Bay Area, will have a voice in this historic election. ABC 7 News reports that they can cast their votes at Mexican consulates, such as those in San Francisco and San Jose. "I think this election is going to be the most historic of all," said Francisco Moreno Castillo, executive director of the Council of Mexican Federations in North America. The two leading candidates are women: Claudia Sheinbaum, supported by current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez. The third candidate is Jorge Álvarez Máynez. This will be the first year that eligible Mexican citizens can vote in a presidential election in person outside of Mexico.

Bloodshed on final day of election campaigns

Mexico's campaign season ended in tragedy as a gunman fatally shot an aspiring mayor at a rally on May 29, just days before the country is expected to elect its first woman president. The Buenos Aires Times reports that this attack raises the number of murdered candidates to at least 24 during an exceptionally violent electoral process in the Latin American nation, according to official figures. However, other sources suggest the number could be higher. Alfredo Cabrera, a mayoral candidate for an opposition coalition, was killed in the southern state of Guerrero, inciting chaos and panic among the rally attendees. The incident was captured on camera, showing Cabrera smiling and surrounded by supporters before being shot multiple times. The state prosecutor's office reported that "the alleged assailant was killed at the scene." Additionally, three people were injured, and two others were detained, according to witnesses.

Church calls for votes

Just eight days before Mexico was set to vote on June 2, the president of the Mexican Bishops’ Conference issued an urgent appeal to priests and bishops. “I respectfully invite all of our country’s priests and bishops to respect the electoral laws and citizens’ free vote,” said conference president Archbishop Rogelio López Cabrera of Monterrey in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Following the archbishop's appeal, the conference released a statement on May 28, emphasizing, “We are convinced that respect for freedom of conscience and electoral laws is essential to build a more just, peaceful, and supportive society.” Mexicans are about to participate in what promises to be a historic election, likely to result in the election of the country's first female president. The frontrunner, Claudia Sheinbaum, would also be Mexico's first Jewish head of state, while her main rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, is Catholic, OSV News reports.

Australian surfers murdered

Australian surfer Callum Robinson, who had ties to Wilmington, was one of three surfers brutally murdered in Mexico. He was known for his passion for lacrosse and spreading the sport to kids. Last week, the bodies of Callum, aged 33, his brother Jake, aged 30, and Jack Carter Rhoad, also 30, were tragically discovered. Investigators have revealed that the Robinson brothers, both Australian nationals, and Rhoad, an American, were victims of gunshot wounds.
Visa requirements for Peruvians

Mexico has implemented visa requirements for Peruvians in response to a surge in migration, closing off the option of flying to a Mexican city near the U.S. border. U.S. officials praised the crackdown on air travel to address illegal migration, but critics believe it will lead to more dangerous choices. As reported by Fox News , the visa requirement was in response to a significant increase in illegal migration from Peru, prompting a response from Peru. The crackdown on air travel from Peru to Mexico has caused migrants to seek alternative, more perilous routes to reach the U.S. and has led to concerns about the safety of migrants.

The upcoming elections on June 2, 2024, which could welcome the Latin nation's first female president feature nearly 20,000 public positions.

However, the lead-up to these elections has been marred by escalating violence. Civic Data, a watchdog group, reported that "2023 was the most violent year in our database. And everything suggests that 2024 will be worse."

Past elections

Mexico's criminal organisations have historically resorted to targeted violence to boost their political influence and safeguard their illicit operations. From 2018 to March 2024, 1,709 attacks, murders, assassinations, and threats have been recorded against individuals involved in politics or government, as well as against government or party facilities.

In past elections, approximately half of the political violence was directly linked to organized crime, with political figures being targeted at a rate of one per week leading up to the 2018 elections. Similarly, in the 2021 nationwide election, around three dozen candidates fell victim to violence.

Build-up to the 2024 elections

The build-up to the 2024 elections has been marked by a disturbing surge in attacks against politicians. More than 170 such incidents have been reported, with two mayoral candidates in Maravatio, Mexico, falling victim to fatal shootings within hours of each other. Over the past year, approximately 30 candidates have been assassinated.

Regionally, the violence is concentrated in the west and centre of the country, with Guerrero, Michoacán, and Morelos bearing the brunt of the attacks. Julian Lopez, a coordinator for the Citizen Movement party in Guerrero, was abducted, beaten, and abandoned.

Since September 2023, reports indicate 300 instances of political violence, involving 399 victims, averaging 1.8 victims per day. With a little over 60 days remaining until the election, the current electoral process spanning 2023-2024 is witnessing the highest levels of violence in Mexico's modern history.

Candidates or aspirants account for 31.8% of the attacks , while 24.1% target current or former public officials and 22.1% are aimed at politicians or former politicians. The remaining victims include family members and collaterals. During this period, 161 murders, 100 threats, and 85 attacks have been recorded . The remaining incidents include kidnappings, disappearances, and various other forms of violence, posing a grave threat to Mexico's democracy.

This assault against the nation's democracy has resulted in candidates withdrawing from races due to personal threats, with estimates suggesting that up to four times as many candidates may have bowed out than officially reported. Additionally, voter turnout may suffer, with studies indicating a 1.3 per cent decrease per attack on a candidate.

The pervasive threat of violence, fueled by organised crime and systemic deficiencies, casts a shadow over the democratic process and raises fears of unprecedented bloodshed in what is expected to be the biggest elections in the nation's history.

Beauty queen shot dead

Ecuadorian influencer Landy Parraga Goyburo was shot and killed at a restaurant. The attackers found her location through her Instagram post in April. According to News 18 , surveillance footage captured two unidentified men barging into the restaurant and firing at Landy. Investigators are still determining the motive behind the murder, with speculations ranging from ties to organised crime to an alleged affair with a late drug lord. No official statement on the motive has, however, been released yet.

Hammerhead shark nursery discovered

Scientists have discovered a possible hammerhead shark nursery in Ecuador's Galapagos archipelago. This finding could help with the conservation of the endangered species. As reported by India TV , the nursery is located in a remote area of the marine reserve and is an important step in understanding and protecting the declining hammerhead shark population. The country's national park authorities also add that the discovery is a "very rare" sighting.

Mexican embassy raid

On Wednesday, May 1, Ecuador justified its raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito last month, asserting to judges at the United Nations’ principal court that the action was necessary to apprehend a "common criminal" – Ecuador’s former vice president – who had sought refuge there. According to AP , Ecuador's legal representatives made this argument during hearings in a case brought by Mexico before the International Court of Justice. Mexico accuses Quito of flagrantly violating international agreements by forcibly entering the embassy to detain former Vice President Jorge Glas. The raid on April 5, occurring shortly after Mexico granted asylum to Glas, escalated existing tensions between the two nations. These tensions had been simmering since Glas, a convicted criminal and fugitive, sought sanctuary at the embassy in December.

$2.3 billion for infrastructure projects

According to reports from World Highways , Ecuador has outlined seven transportation infrastructure projects totalling US$2.3 billion. The government of Ecuador is spearheading this development initiative and is actively seeking international investors to provide financial support. These projects aim to significantly enhance Ecuador's road network. Six of the projects focus on road improvements, including connections between Manta and Quevedo, Pifo and Y de Baeza, Montecristi and La Cadena, Loja and Catamayo, Bahia and Cojimies, as well as Ambato and Puyo. The seventh project involves upgrading the port of Esmeraldas. These endeavours will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with bidding for two of the projects scheduled to commence in 2024.

Security crisis

Early in 2024, Guayaquil, Ecuador's economic hub, experienced a drastic upheaval. On January 9, shocking scenes emerged as a group of armed youths seized journalists during a live TV broadcast, quickly spreading across social media. Concurrently, France24 reports that multiple areas of the city came under attack as local gangs declared open hostility towards Ecuador's institutions and government. Responding swiftly, President Daniel Noboa, inaugurated in 2023, invoked a state of "internal armed conflict" and implemented a state of emergency. This granted the military extensive authority to intervene, particularly in prisons, which had become strongholds for the gangs. Since then, families of detainees have been left in distressing uncertainty, with no updates on their loved ones. The army has assumed control over Guayaquil's prisons, imposing visitation bans akin to those in place across various detention centres.

Mexican presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party was fatally shot during a campaign appearance in Tijuana, a border city in Mexico, south of California on March 23, 1994. Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, the son of the assassinated Mexican presidential candidate, has captured the Latin nation's attention. He is seeking a pardon for his father's convicted killer while pursuing a Senate seat. "I forgive that person, may God bless him, may he be free and leave Mexico, and may he allow us to heal as a nation," Colosio Riojas said . The tragic assassination of his father was the focus of the 2019 Netflix television series "Crime Diaries: The Candidate." The budding politician was just eight when his father was shot in the head. The only person imprisoned for the killing of Murrieta is Mario Aburto, who was sentenced to 45 years in prison. In January, a judge threw out evidence presented by the attorney general's office against an alleged second gunman suspected of having acted with the complicity of a now-defunct government intelligence service.

18 hostages of criminal groups rescued

Mexican authorities conducted a successful rescue operation in Sinaloa, rescuing 18 hostages from criminal groups on March 22. The operation where more than 600 special forces were dispatched to bolster security involved a collaboration between police and military forces, although the perpetrators of the mass kidnappings are still at large. Sinaloa Governor Ruben Roche reported the rescue of nine adults and nine children from mass kidnappings. The governor said that authorities are now working with police and military forces to locate seven more kidnapped individuals. According to media reports , mass kidnappings took place on March 21 in various locations of the La Noria region, outside Sinaloa’s capital city of Culiacan where at least three families were taken hostage by members of criminal organisations.

Concacaf Nations League Final

Mexico faces off against the United States (USMNT) for the Concacaf Nations League (CNL) Final on March 24 at AT&T Stadium. In last year’s CNL semifinal, the USMNT beat the Latin American nation Mexico in a 3-0 victory. The defeat against his archrival cost the then-Mexico coach, Diego Cocca his job after he had only managed seven games for the Mexican team. “This is how I am judged because I am the coach of the Mexican national team, I understand it, but I don’t share it. I have always thought that processes take you to a better place than seeking immediate results,”. said Jamie Lozano current head coach of Mexico in a press conference on March 23. Mexico has not defeated the United States in their last six games.

Land subsidence

Mexico City's metro system has faced challenges due to land subsidence, a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the earth's surface due to the removal of subsurface earth materials. A recent study using satellite radar data and structural engineering analyses identifying areas affected by this phenomenon. The metro's infrastructure has been damaged causing damage to the city's core infrastructure, including the Mexico City Metro, the second largest in North America this has prompted the recommendation for proactive measures to mitigate the risks. “By comparing two or more radar observations from roughly the same location in space, we can detect small changes of the Earth’s surface with centimeter-level accuracy,” said Shimon Wdowinski, FIU geophysics professor and study co-author.

The anti-apartheid activists known as the Cradock Four were Mathew Goniwe, Sparrow MkontoA, Fort Calata and Sicelo Mhlauli.

The four were last seen on June 27, 1985, on their way home to Cradock, a town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Their bodies were found days later, severely burned and covered in multiple stab wounds, the DOJ reported.

According to the statement released by the DOJ, two inquests held in 1987 and 1993 were inconclusive. The establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in 1996 to investigate the atrocities committed following the end of apartheid in 1994 uncovered new evidence.

“The Commission finds that in the late 1980s the South African Police (SAP), and particularly its Security Branch (SB), embarked on a programme of assassinations of political activists. The evidence before the Commission indicates that the resulting deaths and disappearances of activists were part of a systematic pattern of abuse involving premeditated planning by members of the SAP, for which the SAP and the South African government are held responsible,” the TRC stated.

“The privilege of presenting evidence in a democratic South Africa must be exercised. In the previous inquests, the voices of the families and those affected have not been heard. It is time for confidence in the justice system to be restored,” said South African Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola in a statement.

Mathew Goniwe was a teacher, Sparrow Mkonto a railway worker, Fort Calata an educator and Sicelo Mhlauli a headmaster of a local secondary school.
