The artist, whose real name is Tewodros Kassahun, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential cultural figures, with a history of music that often touches on national identity, unity and political themes. Early reactions from listeners suggest that Etorika reflects the current national mood, as the government continues to emphasise stability, reconciliation and dialogue following years of internal tensions. The release has resonated strongly with fans both Ethiopia and within the diaspora.

At the same time, some reports cited by the outlet Borkinna have claimed that more than 100 young people were allegedly arrested in connection with listening to the new music. Additional allegations suggest that state media may have avoided airing the songs and that a planned press event was cancelled shortly before release. These developments have led some diaspora groups and activists to raise concerns online about freedom of expression, while others frame the moment as part of a broader conversation about the role of art in public discourse.

Sade Adu is being inducted into the Performer Category , which honours artists whose recordings and careers have directly shaped the course of popular music.

Fela Kuti, meanwhile, is receiving the Early Influence Award, a distinction reserved for pioneers whose sound and ideas laid the groundwork for entire genres and movements.

In short, Sade is recognised for her body of work as a recording artist, while Fela is honoured for creating a musical blueprint (Afrobeats) that others have built on.

The induction ceremony will take place on November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, with global broadcasts on ABC and Disney+.

Alongside names like Phil Collins, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, and Luther Vandross, the inclusion of Sade and Fela signals a shift in perspective.

Sade Adu

Born Helen Folasade Adu in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1959, Sade’s life has always sat between worlds. She moved to the UK as a child, grew up in Essex, and later immersed herself in London’s creative scene. Fashion student, model, backup singer, but none of it quite fit until she formed Sade, the band that would carry her name and define a sound.

What sets her apart is control. Her voice doesn’t reach for drama; it pulls you in quietly. That restraint became her signature.

Her debut album, Diamond Life (1984), introduced a new kind of pop sophistication. Smooth Operator and Your Love Is King weren’t loud statements but were precise, polished, and emotionally contained. Follow-up projects like Promise , Stronger Than Pride and The Sweetest Taboo doubled down on that formula, blending jazz, soul, and minimalism into her own touch.

As a Grammy-winning artist with global sales in the tens of millions, Sade’s influence runs deep.

Her induction in the Performer Category recognises a career built not on volume, but precision, by refining how emotion is delivered in sound.

Fela Kuti

Where Sade is measured, Fela Kuti was uncompromising.

Born in 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, into a politically active family, Fela inherited a strong sense of resistance early on. His mother was a leading anti-colonial activist, and that spirit carried directly into his work.

After studying music in London and later encountering the Black Power movement in the US, Fela returned to Nigeria with a clear direction. The result was Afrobeat, a genre he didn’t just pioneer, but fully engineered.

Afrobeat fused jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional West African rhythms into long, groove-driven compositions layered with horns, percussion, and politically charged lyrics. Songs like Zombie and Sorrow , Tears and Blood weren’t just records, but confrontations with authority.

He built the Kalakuta Republic , a commune that doubled as a creative and political base. The Nigerian government responded with force. Raids, arrests, violence, yet Fela absorbed it all and kept recording.

His music wasn’t escapism. It was resistance.

Receiving the Early Influence Award, Fela’s impact is now formally acknowledged at a global level. His legacy runs through modern African stars like Wizkid and Burna Boy.

Iran’s Culture Minister Seyed Abbas Salehi said: “In terms of quantity and quality, with clear, attractive expressions and noteworthy events, a considerable number of artists, step by step over these forty days, came forward and participated,” adding that those who did not attend were “traitors”.

Science Minister Hossein Simaei Saraf described Khamenei as unmatched, saying: “I can say that the characteristics you see in our dear, martyred leader are unparalleled traits that have come together in one person.”

Japanese premier Takaichi meets her rock ‘god’

“You are my god,” a visibly delighted Takaichi told drummer Ian Paice, handing him a pair of made-in-Japan drumsticks she had signed herself.

The meeting , which included a brief photo session with frontman Ian Gillan and other members, offered a rare reprieve for a leader facing mounting geopolitical and economic pressures.

Since taking office in October 2025 as Japan’s first female prime minister, Takaichi has contended with diplomatic tensions with China, a weakening yen, rising prices, and the risk of an energy crunch linked to instability in the Middle East.

For a moment, however, the demands of office gave way to something more personal: a lifelong fan meeting the band that shaped her musical identity.

Takaichi’s deep roots in music

Takaichi’s connection to hard rock and heavy metal runs deep. She told the band she first bought their landmark album Machine Head as a grade school student, drawn to signature tracks such as Smoke on the Water and Highway Star.

In her earlier years, the premier played keyboard in a Deep Purple tribute band in middle school before switching to drums at university, a transition that cemented her as an amateur drummer. Even today, she has joked about turning to the drums to relieve stress, quipping that she plays “Burn” after arguments at home.

Her tastes extend across the genre, with Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden also among her cited influences.

This musical background has occasionally crossed into diplomacy. In January, Takaichi shared a lighthearted drum session with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung following a bilateral summit in Nara, where the two leaders played K-pop tracks side by side and exchanged signed drumsticks in a symbolic gesture of cooperation.

Who are Deep Purple?

Formed in 1968 , Deep Purple is widely regarded as a cornerstone of hard rock and early heavy metal, helping define a heavier, more experimental sound that would shape generations of musicians.

Their relationship with Japan is particularly significant. The 1972 double live album Made in Japan, recorded during their first tour of the country, is often cited among the greatest live rock recordings — cementing their reputation as a formidable live act.

More than five decades later, that bond endures. The band is set to kick off its 2026 Japan tour on April 11 at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan.

For Takaichi, the visit was both symbolic and personal.

“I have the deepest respect for the way you continue to make rock history,” she told the group.

Eurovision heads to Asia with Bangkok as inaugural host

The inaugural grand final is scheduled for November 14, marking the first time the 70-year-old competition will stage a multi-country contest outside Europe.

Ten countries have confirmed participation, including the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, alongside Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Nepal. More countries may join in the coming months, organisers said.

As part of the process, each participating country will hold its own national selection to choose an entry before the Bangkok final,

This move coincides with Eurovision’s 70th anniversary, which organisers say provided a natural inflection point for expansion.

Martin Green, director of the contest at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), described Asia as “rich in culture , creativity and talent,” adding that the timing was “especially meaningful” for opening a new chapter.

Celebration of pop music

The Asia edition will follow the core format of the original contest, where performers present original songs and are judged by a mix of expert panels and public voting. While final rules are yet to be confirmed, organisers said the event would be “a celebration of original pop music” where “every vote will count.”

The expansion reflects growing commercial and cultural interest in Asia’s music industry, driven by rising incomes, social media reach and the globalisation of regional genres such as K-pop and Thailand’s T-Wind.

Bangkok was selected as host city partly for its position as a regional cultural hub. Thai tourism official Chuwit Sirivajjakul said the capital “has always been a place where cultures come together, where music fills the air, and where celebration is part of everyday life.”

Notably absent from the initial line-up are major markets such as China, Japan and India, though organisers have indicated that participation remains open.

The Asia launch follows previous attempts to expand the Eurovision format beyond Europe, including the American Song Contest in 2022, which was not renewed after one season.

With more than 600 million people represented by the initial participating countries, organisers are positioning Eurovision Asia as a potential flagship platform for cross-border pop music in the region.

Nepal’s new prime minister made his first address — in a rap song

Balendra Shah, better known as Balen, released a rap track hours after being sworn in as a lawmaker and a day before he is set to become Nepal’s next prime minister, using music to deliver his first message after a landslide election victory.

“The strength of unity is my national power,” he raps in the song, urging a fractured nation to come together. “Undivided Nepali, this time, history is being made.”

The track, titled Jai Mahakali, blends campaign footage with nationalist imagery, echoing themes that propelled his rise from Kathmandu mayor to national leader. Originally recorded more than a decade ago and remastered for release, the song leans heavily on calls for unity and renewal at a time of political upheaval.

“My heart is full of courage, my red blood is boiling; my brothers stand with me, this time we will rise,” Shah declares in another verse. “May my breath not run out, I will run like a leopard.”

The release marks Shah’s first public statement since his Rastriya Swatantra Party secured a sweeping victory in the March 5 election, the first since a deadly youth-led uprising in September 2025 toppled the previous government. At least 77 people were killed in protests initially triggered by a brief social media ban but fuelled by deeper anger over corruption and economic hardship.

At 35, Shah has emerged as a symbol of youth-driven political change in the Himalayan republic, maintaining the persona that first built his following: a sharply dressed rapper in dark sunglasses whose appeal cuts across a generation disillusioned with traditional politics .

The timing of the release appears deliberate. Endorsed as parliamentary party leader only hours earlier, Shah used the track to signal that his political identity will remain intertwined with his artistic roots — and that music will continue to be part of how he communicates with the public.

Sources close to him say two more songs are expected in the coming weeks, suggesting that even as he assumes the country’s highest office, he intends to keep speaking through rhythm as much as policy.

Outgoing interim prime minister Sushila Karki welcomed the transition, saying Nepal’s future lay with a younger generation that could “end corruption… [and] create jobs… [and deliver] economic development and social justice.”

For Shah, the message is already set — not from a podium, but from a verse.

President Lee Jae-myung on Tuesday urged officials to prioritise safety and readiness, including contingency plans for possible “terror” incidents, during a cabinet meeting broadcast live.

The concert, spanning Gwanghwamun Square to City Hall, is projected to draw as many as 260,000 people . While only about 22,000 attendees hold tickets, large crowds are anticipated to gather in surrounding public areas, raising concerns over crowd control and emergency response.

To contain this mammoth crowd, authorities plan to deploy around 4,800 police officers alongside 3,400 city officials and support staff. Measures include managing pedestrian flow, reinforcing emergency services , and tightening counterterrorism monitoring.

Beyond physical attendance, the event will also be streamed live to 190 countries, amplifying its global profile — and the pressure on organisers to ensure safety.

The heightened vigilance reflects lingering sensitivities in South Korea over large-scale crowd risks, with officials keen to avoid any repeat of past incidents, such as the 2022 Halloween tragedy in Seoul, where 159 people were killed.

The performance coincides with the release of BTS’s new album, Arirang, on March 20 — their first in more than three years — and marks the group’s return to the stage as a complete unit following members’ military service commitments.

A global tour is set to follow in April.

Around the venue, anticipation is mixed with uncertainty. Some local businesses are preparing for an influx of international fans, extending operating hours and adopting BTS-themed promotions.

Despite the festive mood surrounding BTS’s return, officials have made clear that the scale of the event demands caution. As Seoul prepares to host a global audience, the focus remains firmly on ensuring that the long-awaited comeback unfolds without incident.

Japanese pop phenomenon AKB48 leads a list of bands with the largest number of members in music history, having featured 292 performers over the course of its existence, according to data compiled by Far Out Magazine .

The list highlights how some music groups have experienced dramatic line-up changes over the years, with dozens, and in some cases hundreds, of musicians passing through their ranks.

AKB48’s figure stands far above any other group, reflecting the band’s unusual structure. Unlike traditional bands, the Japanese idol group operates with rotating members and multiple teams , allowing performers to “graduate” and be replaced by recruits while the brand continues.

Formed in Tokyo in 2005 by producer Yasushi Akimoto, AKB48 was designed around the concept of accessibility and constant renewal. The group performs regularly at its dedicated theatre in Tokyo’s Akihabara district and has inspired several sister groups across Asia.

Because of its rotating membership system, the group has accumulated nearly 300 members throughout its history , making it by far the largest band by total membership ever recorded.

Far Out Magazine ’s compilation also reveals several Western bands that have undergone extensive personnel changes over decades of activity.

The American jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears ranks second, with 183 musicians having performed in the group at different points since its formation in 1967.

The Irish folk-rock group The Waterboys has had 76 members over its long and evolving career.

Other bands on the list include:

Frequent member changes are not unusual in long-running music groups. Creative differences, touring demands, and evolving musical styles often lead to musicians leaving and being replaced.

Some bands, such as The Fall, became known for their revolving line-ups under the leadership of a central figure, in that case, frontman Mark E. Smith, who led the group for more than four decades.

Similarly, Santana, founded by guitarist Carlos Santana, has seen dozens of musicians contribute to the band’s recordings and live performances since the late 1960s.

In 2025, songs performed in 16 languages reached Spotify’s Global Top 50, more than double the number recorded in 2020, according to new data released by the streaming platform in its annual Loud & Clear report.

This shift reflects a broader change in listening habits. Where global hits were once dominated by English-language pop, audiences are increasingly embracing music from regional scenes across Latin America, Asia and other emerging markets.

Some of the fastest-growing genres are closely tied to non-English markets. Among music styles generating more than $100 million in Spotify royalties, the biggest gains came from Brazilian funk, which grew 36%, followed by K-pop (31%), Latin trap (29%), Latin urban (27%) and reggaeton (24%).

Over the past decade, Latin pop and Korean music have produced worldwide hits, mainly from boy groups such as BTS, and recently, from Puerto Rican star Bad Buny. But the new data indicate that the diversity of international sounds reaching mainstream listeners is continuing to expand.

Shift away from U.S.

Spotify’s report also highlights the widening geographic spread of successful artists. Eighty-five per cent of artists earning at least $100,000 annually on the platform are based outside the United States, reflecting the increasingly global nature of the streaming economy.

Streaming has helped accelerate this change by making music instantly accessible worldwide. Spotify said more than half of the royalties artists earn on the platform now come from listeners outside their home country, underscoring how international discovery is driving the industry.

Artists generating significant income are also emerging from a broader range of countries. In 2025, performers earning more than $500,000 on Spotify came from 75 countries, while artists making at least $10,000 annually represented more than 150 countries.

Streaming platforms argue that this global reach has helped expand the music business overall. Spotify said it paid more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025, bringing total lifetime payouts from the platform to nearly $70 billion.

The company also highlighted the rise of a growing “middle class” of musicians. More than 13,800 artists earned at least $100,000 from Spotify last year, while over 1,500 generated more than $1 million.

But the widening mix of languages on the global charts may be the clearest sign of how listening is changing. As streaming connects audiences across borders, the world ’s biggest hits are increasingly coming from many more languages than ever before.

From the Grammy Awards to major music industry honours, performers from regions including Africa and Latin America have delivered some of the year’s most notable moments so far.

Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny made headlines at the 2026 Grammy Awards after winning Album of the Year for Debí Tirar Más Fotos. The victory marked a historic moment for Latin music, with the project becoming one of the most prominent Spanish-language albums ever recognised in the ceremony’s top category.

He continued to host the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime show, which went on to become the most-watched and streamed since Michael Jackson's Super Bowl performance in 1993.

African artists also had a strong showing at the Grammys.

South African singer Tyla also won Best African Music Performance for her single Push 2 Start, adding to the global momentum of African genres such as Afrobeats and Amapiano. To add to her winning catalogue, she won the 57th NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding International Song of the Year with her hit single, "Is It".

The awards also paid tribute to one of Africa’s most influential musicians. Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African artist to be honoured in that category.

Latin and African artists have increasingly moved beyond regional success to become mainstream global figures.

Additionally, Nigerian sensation Tems became the first African female artist to record seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February 2026. She reached that mark after her song “What You Need” debuted at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total number of songs on the chart to seven.

With this total, Tems ties the record for the most Hot 100 appearances by any African act, alongside Burna Boy and South African band Seether.

Streaming platforms and social media have accelerated this shift, allowing audiences around the world to discover genres such as reggaeton, Afrobeats and Amapiano.

As a result, music from the Global South now regularly competes in major international categories rather than being confined to specialised genre awards.

The influence of Global South artists has also been visible across other international ceremonies in early 2026.

On February 28, Spanish star Rosalía , known for blending flamenco with contemporary pop and urban sounds, was among the artists recognised at the BRIT Awards, where she received the International Artist of the Year award.

The win reflects the broader diversification of global pop music, with non-English language artists increasingly recognised at traditionally Western-dominated ceremonies.

Their latest entries came from features on J. Cole’s album "The Fall-Off". "Bunce Road Blues" featuring Tems and Future, debuted at number 34, and "Only You" with Burna Boy entered at number 78. That pushed both of them past the South African band Seether, which previously held the African record with seven entries.

Tems has been especially prolific in 2026, racking up three Hot 100 entries this year alone, a pace no other African artist has matched so far.

Tems has been especially prolific in 2026, racking up three Hot 100 entries this year alone, a pace no other African artist has matched so far.

The entries include "Raindance", her collaboration with British rapper Dave, which charted on the Hot 100 early in the year and "What You Need", her solo single.

Burna Boy, on the other hand, became the first African artist to chart a Hot 100 song in six consecutive years from 2021 through 2026.

Who else has charted?

Billboard Hot 100 entries for African artists aren’t just a recent thing. Over the past few years, several track appearances have punched through, with a show of growing global influence:

These milestones reflect a shift in how global audiences consume music. Afrobeats and related genres no longer register only as niche or regional sounds; they enter mainstream conversation and sometimes dominate it.

How Europe would translate Bad Bunny: A fun linguistic map highlights the artist’s global reach

Bad Bunny may be one of the most recognisable names in music today, and a new illustrated map is showing something even more interesting than streaming numbers: how his name would be translated across Europe ’s many languages.

The map breaks down the phrase “Bad Bunny” into local equivalents, often translating both “bad” and “rabbit” directly.

Some standout examples include:

The variations are more than just translations. They show how different cultures express the idea of “bad” with words ranging from mischievous to cheeky, rather than simply evil.

Europe is home to over 200 languages and dialects, and translation is part of everyday life across the continent. Linguists have long noted that names and phrases often shift meaning when adapted into new cultural contexts.

As the British Council explains, translation is never purely word-for-word. It involves tone, cultural framing, and local expression, which is exactly what makes the above map so entertaining.

“Bad” becomes:

And “bunny” becomes everything from conejito to kouneláki .

Bad Bunny is not just a Latin music star anymore. He has become one of the most listened-to artists on the planet.

According to Spotify, Bad Bunny was the platform’s most-streamed artist globally for three consecutive years between 2020 and 2022 and then 2025, marking a historic breakthrough for Spanish-language music in the mainstream.

His albums, including Un Verano Sin Ti, have topped charts far beyond Latin America , proving that language is no barrier in the streaming era.

Billboard has also credited Bad Bunny with helping push reggaeton and Latin trap into a new commercial and cultural space worldwide, with sold-out tours across the US and Europe.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican singer, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, headlined a 14-minute set that celebrated Puerto Rican culture while promoting unity across the Americas.

The performance included guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, as well as cameos from Pedro Pascal, Cardi B, Karol G, and Jessica Alba.

It was a celebration-cum-show that featured a mix of music, dance, and visual storytelling, including a traditional Puerto Rican casita, national flags from across North, Central and South America.

One billboard read, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.” At the end of the performance, Bad Bunny held a football with the English slogan “Together, We Are America.”

Trump, who did not attend the game, criticized the set on Truth Social, calling it “an affront to the Greatness of America” and accusing viewers of being unable to understand the lyrics. He also claimed the dancing was “disgusting, especially for young children.”

However, data contradicts Trump’s claim as the U.S. holds the title of the second-largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world.

According to Forbes , about 13 percent of the American population speaks Spanish at home.

This makes the U.S. the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, with about 65.5 million Spanish speakers, after Mexico, which has about 138.1 million.

The number of Spanish speakers in the U.S. is expected to rise further, with projections indicating that one in three Americans could speak Spanish by 2050, including bilingual individuals.

Other countries with large Spanish-speaking populations include Colombia (53.1 million), Spain (48.9 million) and Argentina (47.5 million), according to 2025 data from the World Population Review .

Spanish is the second-most spoken language globally, with over 559 million speakers, including 460 million native speakers.

Ergo, data show that millions of Americans could follow and understand Bad Bunny’s performance, directly contradicting Trump’s claim that “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.”

Bad Bunny rarely sings in English, a deliberate choice that reflects his commitment to preserving Puerto Rican identity in his music. The singer has previously rejected industry pressures to translate or soften his songs to appeal to wider audiences.

His decision to perform in Spanish on the Super Bowl stage has brought Latino culture to millions of Americans and reflects broader shifts in U.S. media and entertainment, where Spanish-language music continues to gain ground.

After winning the award for Best Música Urbana Album for DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS , he began his acceptance speech by urging “ICE out”, in reference to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. He then rejected dehumanising language, telling the audience “we’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans”.

Bad Bunny’s use of the word “Americans” reflects a broader cultural and geographic identity that includes people across the entire American continent, not just citizens of the United States . In many parts of Latin America, “America” is understood as the landmass stretching from Canada to Argentina and Chile, a perspective that sees Latinos and others from the hemisphere as part of a shared continental identity. This contrasts with the narrower US usage of “American” to mean citizens of the United States .

His remarks resonated at a time when immigration, identity and national belonging are central issues in political and public debate in the United States. Discussions around border enforcement, deportations and the treatment of migrant communities have intensified in recent years, often accompanied by polarising language. By stressing shared humanity and a broader, continental sense of belonging, Bad Bunny positioned his message against narratives that frame immigrants as outsiders.

His appeal to love over hatred, which he described as the most powerful response to division, reflected an attempt to shift the conversation away from fear and confrontation towards empathy and inclusion.

The moment gained widespread attention not only because it was part of a historic night for Latin music, with a Spanish-language album winning major awards, but also because it highlighted how cultural platforms can intersect with social and political issues. For many viewers in Latin America and beyond, his words underscored a sense of belonging that transcends national borders and reflects deep historical and cultural connections across the Americas.

Reorganisation of port operations after Supreme Court annulment

Panama’s Supreme Court ruled that the long-standing concession allowing Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison subsidiary Panama Ports Company (PPC) to operate major terminals at the Balboa and Cristóbal ports near the Panama Canal was unconstitutional, citing irregularities in the contract and legal framework. President José Raúl Mulino said port operations will continue during a transition, with temporary management by another firm and plans for a new concession process. The decision is seen within the broader geopolitical context of US-China competition over control and influence in strategic infrastructure . China criticised the ruling and vowed to protect its companies’ rights, while Panama affirmed uninterrupted service at the canal’s logistics hubs.

Copa Airlines restores ticket sales between the United States and Venezuela

Copa Airlines announced it has resumed ticket sales for flights linking the United States and Venezuela via Panama, following a US government decision to reopen commercial airspace over Venezuela. The move allows passengers to purchase single itineraries such as Caracas–Panama–Miami with through check-in and simplified travel procedures. This restart follows previous suspensions of services to Venezuelan destinations, part of broader shifts in aviation ties in the region. Copa’s restored sales are expected to ease travel for travellers between the Americas and strengthen Panama’s role as a regional hub.

Panama hosts record-breaking International Economic Forum with 70 countries

The Foro Económico Internacional América Latina y el Caribe 2026, organised by CAF and the Government of Panama in Panama City, concluded with historic participation from more than 6,500 leaders, officials and decision-makers from 70 countries, including presidents, prime ministers, investors and Nobel economists. The event featured over 50 high-level panels and more than 400 bilateral meetings that addressed key regional challenges such as economic integration, sustainable development, energy transition and technological innovation. Attendees included the presidents of Panama, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Bolivia, as well as the prime minister of Jamaica and Chile’s president-elect. The forum consolidated Panama’s role as a regional hub for economic and policy dialogue, while fostering opportunities for cooperation and investment across Latin America and the Caribbean. Experts highlighted the strategic importance of collective action on globalisation pressures, infrastructure and climate priorities. The high turnout marks one of the largest gatherings of political and business leadership in the region in recent years.

Nuclear energy interest rises amid growing power demand

Officials and experts at a recent international forum highlighted growing regional interest in nuclear energy, including in Panama, as a complement to renewable sources to meet rising electricity demand and ensure energy security. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that Panama, along with other Latin American countries, is exploring nuclear as a reliable energy option alongside solar and wind. Delegates noted that nuclear could support stable baseload power and help transition to low-emission energy systems as part of long-term planning. Multilateral financial institutions expressed willingness to back nuclear projects to enhance regional energy portfolios.

K-pop diplomacy: Mexico’s Sheinbaum asks Lee for more BTS shows

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Sheinbaum said her letter requested more shows beyond the three scheduled at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on May 7, 9 and 10.

“Around 1 million young people want to buy tickets, but there are only 150,000 available,” she said.

While seemingly innocuous, the appeal has sparked debate within the K-pop industry.

Some insiders noted that the request should have been directed to Hybe, BTS’ management company, rather than the South Korean president. One official noted that world tours are carefully planned based on market research, venue availability and artist schedules, leaving little room for last-minute additions.

BTS has previously added extra shows in cities such as Tampa, Stanford and Las Vegas in response to strong ticket demand, and additional dates in Japan and the Middle East are expected.

Ticket sales probed

The controversy coincides with frustration among Mexican fans, many of whom failed to secure tickets during the initial global sale.

The Mexican consumer watchdog has opened an investigation into Ticketmaster and is probing resale platforms such as StubHub and Viagogo for “abusive and disloyal practices.”

Original tickets ranged from roughly 1,800 to 17,800 pesos ($100–$1,030), while resale prices soared to as much as 92,100 pesos ($5,300).

Why is K-pop big in Mexico?

Mexico is one of the world’s most passionate K-pop markets , with over 14 million fans on Spotify alone. Streaming of Korean pop music has grown more than 500% in five years, and fandom culture thrives through social media, fan art, themed events and community initiatives.

“K-Pop artists connect with fans by being real and speaking openly about their feelings, which really resonates with young listeners in Mexico,” said Alejandro Grageda, head of music at Spotify Mexico.

“They also promote an optimistic vision of the world—something that inspires fans to dream, believe in something better, and build strong, supportive communities together,” Grageda added.

The “ 2025 Korea National Image Survey ” found that 82.3% of respondents across 26 countries held a favourable view of South Korea, the highest score since the poll began in 2018 and up 3.3 percentage points from a year earlier.

The survey, conducted in October, questioned about 13,000 people worldwide.

What’s behind the rise?

Cultural content emerged as the single biggest driver of that rise.

Nearly half of respondents cited Korean pop culture — including K-pop, dramas and films — as the main factor shaping their positive view of the country, far ahead of economic performance or political influence. The impact was strongest among younger audiences, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Favourability was highest in the Middle East and parts of Asia, led by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and the Philippines. The UK also recorded one of the largest year-on-year gains, becoming the only European country to score above the global average, the culture ministry said.

The findings reflect the expanding reach of Korea’s cultural exports, which now shape how millions encounter the country for the first time — largely through video platforms and social media . Global stars such as BTS, Blackpink, footballer Son Heung-min and actor Lee Min-ho were named as among the figures most associated with Korea’s positive image.

Korea’s president, Lee Jae Myung, trailed these cultural stars.

In August 2025, another Korean cultural export made global headlines when the animated film “K-Pop Demon Hunters” became Netflix’s top-grossing film , racking up more than 236 million views at the time.

The film’s namesake soundtrack also claimed four simultaneous spots in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Culture over politics

For Korea, its international perceptions has now broadened beyond security tensions on the peninsula or idol culture alone, with growing interest in its economy, society and political system.

At the same time, the survey noted a gap between how Korea is viewed abroad and how Koreans see their own country, as well as lingering concerns about social inclusiveness.

Still, the message from abroad was clear: Korea’s cultural soft power has become one of the most effective image-building tools in the world — turning music, drama and film into a global calling card that continues to reshape how the country is seen.

Who is boycotting the Eurovision Song Contest?

A growing number of countries have announced they will withdraw in protest over the participation of Israel in the 2026 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

At least five nations, including Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands, have formally declared their intention to boycott the competition if Israel remains in, following the decision by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to allow its participation.

Their protest echoes mounting criticism and concern over Israel’s role amid the ongoing war in Gaza, raising pressing questions about human rights , media freedom, and the integrity of cultural institutions.

For decades, Eurovision has branded itself as apolitical, a festival of music, unity, and cultural exchange. Official rules prohibit political content, statements, or propaganda from the performances. But as global events intensify, so too do the tensions around the contest’s principles.

The withdrawal of Spain and other countries threatens to erode the financial base of the contest, since some boycotting nations contribute heavily to Eurovision’s budget, and could also depress overall interest and participation.

What this means for Eurovision 2026

Despite the controversy, the EBU says it will “respect any boycott decisions” by member broadcasters. For now, the contest is scheduled to go ahead in Vienna, as planned, but not without risks.

Host broadcaster ORF, which is organising the 2026 edition, acknowledges potential financial setbacks, especially if multiple prominent countries stay out, but insists the show itself can carry on without major damage.

Still, many fear the boycott could mark a turning point: a moment when Eurovision, once a unifying pop-culture spectacle, becomes another arena for global political fault lines, music no longer insulated from war, protest, and moral reckoning.

Is AI making better music? Why artists say they are losing the streaming war

The reason is that AI-generated songs go viral, rack up millions of streams and even sometimes impersonate real musicians, without any form of accountability.

In Canada

In Canada, a mysterious new band named the Velvet Sundown emerged on streaming platforms earlier this year. Within a short period, the band gathered more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify. With vibrant rock tracks, retro album covers and seemingly authentic band photos, many listeners believed they had discovered a real up-and-coming group.

However, a few weeks later, it was reported that the entire project, including the music, vocals, visuals, and photos, was AI-generated. The group’s spokesperson was reported by CBC to have said that the project was an “artistic provocation” designed to test whether AI-created content could pass undetected in the streaming ecosystem.

On the back of this, musicians and unions say that such projects risk diverting already limited streaming royalties away from human artists.

The Director of Canadian Affairs for the American Federation of Musicians said, “It’s obviously a challenge in the industry. Technology gets created and used before there are guardrails in place to protect musicians.”

The union argues that musicians should have to consent before their work is used to train AI systems and should be compensated if they choose to allow it.

In the United States

Further on, the Artist Rights Alliance, a US-based non-profit advocacy group, issued an open letter demanding that AI companies, developers and music platforms stop using artificial intelligence to “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”

“This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem,” the letter read in part.

The statement was signed by more than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj and Arkells.

In Africa

Meanwhile, in Africa, some musicians are choosing to engage with AI instead of rejecting it outright. Nigerian Afropop singer FAVE decided to officially release an AI-generated version of Intentions, a song which, according to the singer, was originally made by Urban Chords, which had gone viral earlier this year after convincingly imitating her voice.

“ People kept tagging me and saying the song felt like something I would sing,” she said.

“I saw how excited people were, and I didn’t want that excitement to die. If fans already believed in the song, why not make it real?”

Fave re-recorded the track herself, intentionally keeping the AI-created choir vocals. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “My song ‘INTENTIONS’ is on the very short list of songs that I wrote about myself, becoming an adult and realising that you can never be in control all the time. I struggled with accepting the things I could not change, and in the face of change, I staggered too. So when my Mum and my friends told me about an AI version of my song being on the net and my fans began asking me to release it, I struggled sooo hard to accept that. But that’s the old me. It’s happening, so why fight it?”

Congo’s cultural power play: How Kinshasa took over Paris

More than just music, the event became a case study in how nations of the Global South can leverage culture as a tool of soft power.

A full house—and a political message

Over 20,000 attendees packed the arena, with thousands more outside unable to enter. They were draped in Congolese flags, chanting and singing. On stage, more than thirty top artists—Fally Ipupa, Gims, Dadju, Youssoupha, and Soolking—performed without fees. The goal was to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC and reframe the country’s global image.

A deliberate soft power strategy

The event aligned with a broader strategy by Congolese leadership to reposition the country internationally. President Félix Tshisekedi, whose name was cheered from the stands, is emerging as a promoter of Congo’s cultural diplomacy. Key to the initiative was Chantal Chambu Mwavita, Minister of Human Rights , who was decisive in organising the event. Her presence reflected more than political support—it signalled the state’s understanding that soft power can be a strategic asset.

Why Paris matters

Staging the event in Paris - both a global diplomatic capital and home to a large African diaspora - gave Congo maximum exposure. The symbolism was powerful: an African nation using one of the West’s most prestigious stages not to beg, but to perform, to assert, to unite.

A model for the Global South

The success of the concert shows how countries in the global south can reclaim the narrative, not through formal summits or reactive diplomacy, but by creating emotional resonance. Where many countries still passively endure their media image, the DRC has shown that cultural pride, backed by institutional intent, can actively shape it.

The power of symbols

Diplomacy is increasingly emotional. The most influential moments today are those that resonate across screens, borders, and hearts. A concert, when carefully orchestrated, can move minds more effectively than a press release. On that April night in Paris, the Congo sang. But more importantly, it was heard.

For over two decades, Ilu Oba De Min has stood as a symbol of resistance, particularly for Black women. "This bloco represents more than just music—it’s about the ongoing fight and resilience of Black women in Brazil," Sergio Eduardo, a carnival enthusiast told the AFP.

The event is more than just a party; it’s a powerful statement of identity and unity. "For us Black people in Brazil, carnival is a time to celebrate, to sing, to dance, and to reaffirm our fight for survival," said Lêda Leal, a pedagogue.

The timeless bond between Christmas songs and iconic films

Christmas songs have an unparalleled ability to transport us to a world of nostalgia, joy, and warmth. Many of these beloved tunes owe their enduring popularity to tradition and their inclusion in iconic films that have become an essential part of holiday celebrations.

FiveThirtyEight reveals the latest popular music in the film. Take Jingle Bells , for instance. It was never meant to be a Christmas song written in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont and originally titled One Horse Open Sleigh . Intended as a Thanksgiving tune, it wasn’t until decades later that it became a quintessential holiday classic. Its cheerful melody has since found a home in countless films, cementing its place in the hearts of audiences worldwide.

The hauntingly beautiful Silent Night has a more sombre origin. Composed during the “Year Without a Summer” in 1816—a time of great hardship following volcanic eruptions—this Austrian carol carries a poignant reminder of resilience and hope. Its cinematic appearances have only added to its emotional resonance during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Auld Lang Syne , with its 18th-century Scottish roots penned by Robert Burns, has become a staple of New Year’s Eve scenes in movies, evoking a sense of reflection and connection. Its inclusion in films has made it a powerful anthem for bidding farewell to the past and welcoming new beginnings.

Other classics, like We Wish You a Merry Christmas , trace their origins back to 16th-century England. These timeless songs have seamlessly blended history with modern storytelling, becoming the soundtrack to our collective holiday memories.

Films and Christmas songs share a unique symbiosis, with movies amplifying the emotional impact of these melodies while the songs themselves create unforgettable cinematic moments.

Founded by Armand Diangenda in 1994, the orchestra now boasts 200 members and has performed on international stages, including in front of the British Royal Family in London.

Recounting the orchestra’s journey, Diangenda described the challenges faced in its early years. "When we started, finding violins was our first challenge. We only had a few, so each musician played for 15 minutes before passing the instrument to the next person,” he said. Over time, however, the orchestra gathered enough resources to build a more sustainable ensemble.

Violinist Pauleth Massamba, who joined after extensive classical training, expressed pride in being part of this cultural landmark. "Being in the Kimbanguist Symphony Orchestra is a great achievement in my life. This isn’t something easy; joining the orchestra requires rigorous training and commitment,” she said.

Dedicated fan Oscar Sukami urged government support to ensure the orchestra’s growth, emphasising the need for better resources to match international standards. “The government must step in to equip the orchestra with everything it needs, just as orchestras in Europe have,” he said.

In honour of its 30th anniversary, the orchestra is planning a commemorative concert, performing pieces from across its storied history - a tribute to its perseverance and accomplishments on the world stage.

In nations with complex or formal writing systems, such as China (3.5%) and Japan (4.7%), the proportion of left-handers is notably lower.

This is often due to cultural norms that encourage right-handedness from a young age, especially for tasks requiring intricate handwriting. In these regions, left-handed children are more likely to be taught to write with their right hand.

Interestingly, generational factors also play a role in left-handedness. For example, an estimated 6-8% of the older population worldwide may have been naturally left-handed but were trained to use their right hand instead. This was due to past stigmas associated with left-handedness, which was sometimes viewed as unfavourable.

However, left-handed individuals are not just unique in their numbers; they often exhibit fascinating strengths. Some studies suggest that left-handers may excel in creativity and holistic thinking due to unique brain functions.

The idea that left-handed people are more intelligent than right-handers has been discussed boardly. However, according to BBC, this may not be the case. In competitive fields like sports, left-handers make up around 40% of top tennis players, with stars like Rafael Nadal and Martina Navratilova showcasing their skills.

In the music world, legendary left-handed guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney have used their natural orientation to create unforgettable music, proving that left-handers leave a lasting impact across various fields.

The 54-year-old music mogul appeared in a Manhattan courtroom, where he was ordered to remain in custody until his trial.

The indictment accuses Combs of engaging in decades of sexual abuse and operating a "criminal enterprise" involved in serious crimes, including sex trafficking and forced labour. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams noted that Combs is currently the only individual indicted, but the investigation is ongoing.

According to the charges, Combs allegedly coerced women to participate in "Freak Offs," extended sexual performances with male sex workers that were often filmed and involved narcotics.

The judge denied a request for bail, citing concerns about potential witness intimidation.

Combs's legal issues escalated after singer Cassie filed a lawsuit alleging years of coercive abuse, including rape. Although that case was settled, it led to further allegations against him.

Thailand Roundup: Calls for peace, untapped music industry, travel scam

Calls for peace

NGOs in Southern Thailand are urging the new government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to prioritise regional peace. Civil Society Council chairman Lamai Manakarn expressed concern over the ongoing security issues and the stalled peace negotiation process, which has been ineffective since its initiation. As reported by the Sun The council, representing over 40 NGOs, plans to submit an open letter requesting the government's focus on resolving the conflict that has resulted in over 7,000 deaths since 2004. Paetongtarn, the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history, is expected to outline her policies soon, including addressing these pressing issues.

Corruption threats

The Democrat Party of Thailand, represented by Secretary-General Dech-it Khaothong, has pledged to withdraw from the coalition government if corruption occurs within the administration. Speaking on his first day as deputy public health minister, Dech-it reinforced the party's anti-corruption stance and stated that if the government remains graft-free, they will serve their full term. Despite claims of strong local support for joining the coalition, a recent survey revealed that 54% of respondents oppose the party's participation, with only 12% strongly supporting it. Dech-it indicated the party would evaluate its coalition performance monthly, Bangkok Post reports .

Thai-Chinese high-speed train project

Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote is seeking Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's approval to sign a construction contract for a 13.3-kilometre segment of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train project, which has faced delays. The contract has been awarded but is held up due to concerns about the proximity of Ayutthaya Station to the UNESCO World Heritage site. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) completed a Heritage Impact Assessment and submitted it to UNESCO, agreeing to lower the elevated track's height from 19 to 17 metres, Bangkok Post reported. However, relocating the route is not feasible due to budget and time constraints. The SRT aims to finalise the contract by October and proceed with the project irrespective of UNESCO's final recommendation.

Untapped music industry

Experts from Thailand's Creative Economy Agency emphasise the country's potential in the global music industry, bolstered by the government's soft power promotion policy. The IFPI's Global Music Report 2024 noted that the global music market generated $28.6 billion in 2023, with a significant contribution from streaming (67.3% of total revenue). Countries like South Korea, China, and India are driving this growth, particularly through the popularity of K-pop. According to The Star , Thai music revenue reached $126 million in 2023, up 18.6% thanks to government initiatives like the Music Exchange project promoting Thai artists internationally. Innovations in technology, such as virtual reality and AI, continue to transform the music experience and engage global audiences.

Travel scam

A fraudulent tour company in Thailand has scammed over 150 victims, accumulating around 20 million baht. The scammers, identified by authorities as two individuals, operated by falsely advertising overseas employment and travel packages, mainly via social media. Victims recounted paying significant amounts for tours, only to lose contact with the company as departure dates approached. Investigations are ongoing, with victims gathering evidence to assist authorities. Concerns arise that the suspects may have fled the country, complicating recovery efforts for the defrauded funds, as reported by Asean Now .

The Iconic musician embraced the West African nation as his new homeland in a ceremony that took place on May 13 within the halls of the Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential palace.

Wonder after the fulfilment of a nearly 50-year-old dream said his decision to become a citizen of Ghana was down to his “respect and admiration” for the nation's history, culture, and values.

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo after fulfilling the 25-time Grammy winner’s lifelong dream said “In conferring Ghanaian citizenship upon Stevie Wonder, we not only extend our warmest embrace to a beloved son of Africa, but also reaffirm our belief in the enduring spirit of Pan-Africanism and the global African family, and the boundless potential of our continent and all its descendants.”

The 74-year-old recounted his longtime admiration of the country in a conversation with Oprah Winfrey in February 2021, when he expressed his desire to move permanently to Ghana away from the racial injustice in the United States.

“I wanna see this nation smile again. And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana because I’m going to do that… I don't want to see my children's children's children have to say, Oh, please like me,” he said.

Wonder is part of a list of global icons that have an affinity with the Gold Coast nation. Maya Angelou, a celebrated writer, spent part of her youth in Ghana, W.E.B du Bois, a renowned scholar also found a home in Ghana and is buried in the country, while Rita Marley, the wife of legendary Jamaican musician Bob Marley has a home in the eastern part of the nation.

Church services and carols, an African Christmas tradition

As of 2023, there are approximately 650 million Christians in Sub-Saharan Africa which is expected to grow over a billion by 2050. Many of these Christians attend church services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as other days leading up to and following the holiday.

One of the most popular and distinctive features of African Christmas celebrations is the singing of carols, which are often performed in local languages and styles.

Some of the carols are adaptations of European or American tunes, while others are original compositions that reflect the culture and history of the region.

In Nigeria, one of the most widely sung carols is "Betelehemu" , which means "Bethlehem" in Yoruba. The song praises Jesus as the king of kings and the lord of lords and expresses gratitude for his birth.

One of the most beloved carols in South Africa is "Indodana" , which means "The Son" in Xhosa. The song tells the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection, and emphasizes his role as the savior of humanity.

The tradition of singing carols in Africa dates back to the colonial era when missionaries introduced Christianity to various parts of the continent. However, over time, Africans have adapted and transformed the carols to suit their own musical tastes and religious expressions.

Some of the carols incorporate elements of African folk music, such as drums, rattles, flutes and xylophones. Others use modern instruments, such as guitars, keyboards and saxophones. Some of the carols are sung in acapella or choral arrangements, while others are accompanied by dancing and clapping.

The church services and carols that mark Christmas in Africa are not only a way of celebrating the birth of Jesus, but also a way of affirming the identity and diversity of African Christianity.

Africans have steadily ascended to international prominence, headlining global stages and dominating global music charts. Those who have won the coveted Grammy award have been hailed as standard-bearers in their respective countries.

This has cast a shadow over the achievements of those who have been recognised by Pan-African music awards and other global awards, simply because they haven't secured a Grammy.

Ghana's Sarkodie, one of Africa's most celebrated rappers, has won international awards like the BET and MOBO. Yet, these accomplishments have been unfairly diminished by critics in his homeland, because a Grammy award eludes him.

Nigerian Afrobeats artist, Davido, has been a dominant force in African music over the past decade. Despite his significant contributions, debates about his status as one of Africa's greatest music exports persist, often hinging on his lack of a Grammy award.

However, this year marks a turning point for Davido. He has earned his first-ever nomination at the Grammy Awards, a milestone that could potentially shift the debate surrounding his legacy.

Beninese-French artist Angélique Kidjo stands as a trailblazer, having clinched five Grammy Awards in various categories.

Burna Boy from Nigeria secured the 'Best World Music Album' at the 2021 Grammy Awards, marking a significant win for African music.

South African artist Tyla, a first-time Grammy nominee, will hope to join Black Coffee, Miriam Makeba and others as the South Africans to have secured the Grammy nod. Her song "Water" has gained popularity on platforms like Spotify, boasting over a thousand monthly listeners.

The introduction of the "Best African Performance" category in 2024 signals a departure from the traditional practice where African artists competed with musicians from other continents in global music categories or as featured artists.

Wizkid and Tems from Nigeria have tasted Grammy success, however, their wins came as featured artists on Western projects. The new category opens doors for these artists to be recognised on their merit.
