Speaking on Monday, February 16, Tusk made clear that Poland would not deploy troops to Gaza under any circumstances.

“Poland certainly does not intend to send Polish soldiers to the Gaza Strip. We have our own security challenges,” he said.

The prime minister added that the government does not foresee formal participation in the Peace Council initiative. Any Polish presence, he said, would be strictly observational.

Tusk also dismissed the idea of financing reconstruction or development projects in Gaza, saying Poland must prioritise investment in its own cities and domestic needs.

Amandi, a former chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in Enugu State, was arrested in September 2025, but his alleged role in the suspected coup attempt is only now coming to light.

Investigators say Amandi was allegedly recruited by the coup suspects to act as a propagandist, helping promote or support the plot, which reportedly involved plans to assassinate senior government officials.

Sources briefed on the matter said President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas were among those allegedly marked for elimination.

Military confirms coup investigation

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters confirmed that officers had been investigated for attempting to remove the government illegally. In a statement, the military said the inquiry was “comprehensive” and had been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with existing regulations.

It said the findings identified “a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” calling such actions inconsistent with the professional ethics of the armed forces.

The accused officers are expected to be arraigned before military judicial panels.

Premium Times first reported in October that at least 16 officers were being investigated, although the army initially described the case as involving “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”

Since then, more officers and civilians have reportedly been arrested as investigators expanded the probe.

Military suspects are expected to face court-martial proceedings first, while civilians implicated, including Amandi, would be tried in civil courts.

Background to the alleged plot

Sources cited by Premium Times said the plot was allegedly masterminded by a colonel identified as Alhassan Ma’aji. The coup was initially planned for May 29, 2023, during Tinubu’s inauguration, but was reportedly postponed due to funding and logistical challenges. Investigators say the plan was revived in 2025, with claims that former Bayelsa State governor Timipre Sylva helped bankroll the effort through nearly N1 billion transferred in multiple tranches. Sylva was later declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and his home was reportedly raided during investigations.

Stanley Amandi is known in Nollywood as an actor, director and production manager. His works include The Album, Tiger King (2008), Cornerstone (2019), and Once Upon a Dream (2024).

Speaking in Canberra, Albanese said the Office of National Intelligence had identified a “regular online video feed from ISIS” linked to the suspects, indicating the attack was ideologically motivated as well as tactically planned.

“We must consider both motivation and method,” the prime minister said. “We’ve been informed that the Office of National Intelligence has identified material that reinforces this was an ISIS-inspired attack.”

The shooting, described by authorities as Australia’s worst mass casualty attack since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, left 15 people dead, including one of the gunmen, and injured more than 40 others. Those killed included Rabbi Eli Schlanger and a Holocaust survivor, according to community leaders.

Police said the attackers were identified as father and son Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son was arrested and remains in custody.

In response, Albanese unveiled a national gun buyback scheme, calling it the most significant firearms reform since the sweeping changes introduced after Port Arthur, where 35 people were killed.

“The terrible events at Bondi show we need to get more guns off our streets,” he said.

Under the proposal, the federal government will partner with states and territories to buy back surplus, newly banned and illegal firearms, with costs shared equally. Albanese noted that Australia now has more than four million firearms in circulation—more than at the time of the Port Arthur tragedy nearly three decades ago.

The government also plans to cap the number of firearms an individual can own, tighten licensing requirements, restrict the types of guns that can be legally owned, require Australian citizenship for firearm licences and fast-track the creation of a National Firearms Register.

“Australians are rightly proud of our gun laws,” Albanese said. “We are not home to the constant carnage we see in some countries, and we intend to keep it that way.”

Trump, speaking alongside grieving families, praised Beckstrom as “a magnificent person” and said he had spoken with her parents. “One is no longer with us… She’s looking down, and she’s so proud of her country,” he said. “It’s an honour to be your president. We’re going to do a great job.”

Authorities have charged an Afghan national in connection with Wednesday’s shooting, which has escalated political tensions around national security and migration.

In response, Trump confirmed a newly announced “pause” on immigration from what he called “third-world countries,” saying the administration would conduct a broader review of U.S. entry policies following the attack.

The shooting has sparked widespread grief and renewed debate over security, immigration , and the protection of service members stationed in the capital.

What to know about Indonesia’s new ‘global citizenship’ policy

The new Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI) programme offers permanent, unlimited residency without requiring applicants to abandon their existing nationality.

The move marks a significant shift in a country that maintains a strict ban on dual citizenship. For decades, those with mixed heritage or long-term family connections to Indonesia have been forced to choose between legal status and emotional belonging, often leaving many feeling distanced from the country despite deep roots.

The policy is aimed particularly at former Indonesian nationals and members of the Indonesian diaspora who have either lost or never held Indonesian citizenship. It also addresses long-standing challenges faced by foreigners married to Indonesian citizens, who have historically been restricted by complex residency rules.

Announcing the programme, Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs Agus Andrianto said the GCI was designed to resolve the longstanding debate around dual nationality.

“GCI is a solution to answer the dual citizenship policy with the broad right to stay for foreign nationals (WNA) who have strong ties with Indonesia, without changing their citizenship status and without violating the rules of other nations,” he said.

He added that the new policy demonstrates Indonesia’s capacity to keep pace with global migration trends.

“GCI is a solution addressing the polemic of dual nationality by granting extensive residency rights to foreigners closely connected to Indonesia, without changing their foreign citizenship status and without violating national regulations,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Immigration, eligible individuals include former Indonesian citizens; their descendants up to the second generation; spouses of Indonesians or former Indonesians; and children born to a legally recognised mixed-nationality marriage.

The programme will not be universally available. Those excluded include applicants from countries once within Indonesia’s territorial borders, foreign military personnel, intelligence officers and individuals involved in separatist movements.

The GCI sits alongside Indonesia’s existing visa categories, including the much-publicised Golden Visa, which targets major investors and highly skilled professionals and offers residency for five to ten years. For tourists or short-stay visitors—particularly in popular destinations such as Bali—the 30-day e-Visa on Arrival remains the standard option and can be extended once.

Minister Andrianto said the ministry would ensure that the GCI offers legal clarity, administrative simplicity and international competitiveness.

He pointed to similar schemes overseas, such as India’s Overseas Citizenship of India programme, as evidence that such policies can succeed without compromising sovereignty.

For Andrianto, this reform signalled a shift in Indonesia’s immigration philosophy.

“Indonesian Immigration will always respond to global needs and challenges. GCI is proof that our immigration policy is not static, but will continue to transform following the development of the times,” he said.

“Two years ago, we embarked on a campaign and retaliated against our enemies,” Netanyahu said in a national address from Jerusalem. “Thanks to your resilience and unity, citizens of Israel, we withstood difficult tests. We achieved tremendous victories — victories that are changing the face of the Middle East.”

“But,” he continued, “as the Chief of Staff said, the campaign is not yet finished. Great challenges still lie ahead of us, but also opportunities.”

The prime minister said he had faced “tremendous pressure from home and abroad” to halt the war, naming specific operations that drew international criticism, including the Israeli military's entry into Rafah and seizure of the Philadelphi Route. He also cited broader calls to withdraw from Gaza while regional threats remained.

“I firmly rejected all these pressures,” Netanyahu said, “because I had one and only one consideration in mind, the security of Israel.”

Netanyahu added that his military ops had 'trapped' Hamas: "We corner it from all sides in preparation for the next stages of the plan where Hamas will be disarmed and then dismantled.

Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino said that the aircraft, first reported by a commercial airline to air traffic controllers, came within 75 kilometres of Venezuelan shores.

Speaking on state television, he described the flyover as “a threat to national security” and warned that Venezuela would mobilise its forces if attacked.

The incident comes amid a significant U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean. In September, Washington deployed 10 F-35 fighter jets, eight warships, and a nuclear submarine to Puerto Rico under what it says is an operation to disrupt narcotics trafficking.

U.S. forces have since sunk several boats allegedly linked to drug smugglers, leaving at least 14 people dead, according to official reports.

President Nicolás Maduro has denounced the U.S. operations as a cover for regime change and an attempt to control Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. In response, Caracas has staged military drills involving warships, helicopters, and 2,500 troops, and Maduro has said he is preparing a decree to declare a “state of external unrest.”

The confrontation underscores escalating tensions in the wider Caribbean, where Washington’s efforts to counter drug trafficking intersect with Maduro’s campaign to rally domestic support against what he portrays as U.S. aggression.

65 years on – is Nigeria a failed state?

Economy under strain

Nigeria’s economic reforms, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, were intended to stabilise public finances and attract investment. Instead, they have fueled hardship. Inflation hit 34.2% in 2024, the highest in 28 years, while food inflation surged to 40.7% ( National Bureau of Statistics, 2024 ). With one in two Nigerians now living in multidimensional poverty, the country’s vast oil wealth has yet to translate into broad-based development.

Persistent insecurity

Armed groups remain a major destabilising force. Boko Haram, its offshoot ISWAP, and Ansaru continue to wage violence in northern Nigeria. The August 2025 arrest of Ansaru leaders Mahmud Muhammad Usman and Mahmud al-Nigeri was hailed as a turning point, but experts caution that extremist networks are resilient and prone to retaliatory attacks. Kidnapping-for-ransom and farmer-herder clashes further compound insecurity, undermining state authority in vast swathes of the country.

Democratic fragility

Since its return to civilian rule in 1999, Nigeria has struggled with electoral credibility. Nearly every presidential election has ended in legal disputes. Analysts warn that unless the 2027 general elections improve on the contested 2023 polls, Nigeria risks eroding public trust in democracy. Political scientists say this could embolden other West African regimes, already plagued by coups and authoritarian backsliding, to manipulate their own electoral processes.

Fragile social systems

Nigeria’s health and education systems expose the cost of weak governance. The country has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates, with 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births ( WHO, 2023 ). In education, millions of out-of-school children, estimated at 20 million by UNICEF, threaten the future of a youthful population.

Energy and infrastructure gap

Despite its oil reserves, Nigeria’s power sector is one of the least reliable in Africa. Over 85 million people, that is 43% of the population, lack access to grid electricity ( African Development Bank, 2024 ). Power generation averages 4,500 MW for a nation of 228 million, constraining industrialisation and job creation.

A nation at crossroads

Nigeria’s strategic weight is undeniable since it is Africa’s largest economy, the continent’s biggest democracy, and a key security partner to Western powers. Yet its internal crises, rising poverty, governance deficits, and insecurity raise questions about its long-term stability. With over 70% of Nigerians under 30, the country faces a stark choice: either to harness its demographic dividend for growth or allow frustration to fuel instability and unrest.

As Nigeria turns 65, it teeters between resilience and fragility. Whether it tips one way or the other will depend on the government’s ability to turn ambitious reforms into real improvements for ordinary citizens.

Haiti gang crisis ‘not Mission Impossible,’ says Kenyan leader as he urges global support at UNGA

“The situation in Haiti can be solved. It is not Mission Impossible,” Ruto said on September 22 at a high-level meeting on Haiti during the United Nations General Assembly.

The Kenyan leader emphasised that the greatest obstacles to the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) were not the gangs themselves, but the logistical shortcomings that hampered operations.

“The biggest challenge and impediment was logistics, transport, support,” he said. “If that remains unpredictable, I'm afraid the next mission may suffer the same as MSS, and therefore it is very important that, as we create that transition, we make sure that resources, resourcing the new mission becomes at the heart of the transition.”

Ruto credited the United States with trying to fill some of those gaps. But he also underlined how inadequate resources placed personnel at risk, pointing to the consequences of being supplied with unreliable equipment.

“They did make available logistics, vehicles, but unfortunately, most of the vehicles were secondhand vehicles, and therefore they broke down a lot, many times, and in fact, it put our personnel in great danger when they broke down in very dangerous places,” he said. “But at least they stepped up. We didn't, however, get any useful support from any other quarter.”

Turning to the Haitian gangs themselves, Ruto downplayed their strength, insisting they retreat quickly when challenged. He suggested that their tactics showed vulnerability rather than strength.

“The gangs, in my very honest opinion, are cowards,” he said. “With very minimal intervention, they have literally gone into hiding, occasionally showing up. Some guerrilla warfare of some sort."

The president also defended the performance of the MSS.

“The achievements of the MSS are too often understated,” he said. “When the first contingent arrived in Port au Prince few could have imagined that a Boeing 787 one day, would land at the local airport without a risk of being brought down.”

Ruto also reiterated his message: that the international community had the means to turn the tide in Haiti, provided it acted with urgency and provided adequate support.

“Therefore, I thought I would use this meeting moving to the attention of the international community that the situation in Haiti can and must be solved.”

Speaking in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects, Modi cautioned that external dependence weakens India’s future.

“We have no big enemies in the world in the true sense. If we have any enemy, it is our dependence on other countries. This is our biggest enemy,” he said. “The enemy must be defeated. We always have to repeat this. The more foreign dependence, the greater the failure of the country.”

He urged collective action to reduce this vulnerability, framing self-reliance as a pillar of national strength rather than merely an economic plan. Modi’s remarks come at a tense moment in India–U.S. relations, with trade and energy policies at the centre of dispute.

Washington recently imposed a 25% reciprocal duty on Indian goods from August 7, followed by an additional 25% penalty tariff beginning August 27 — a direct response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.

New Delhi has defended its stance, insisting that it will secure the “best deal” on oil to protect its citizens’ interests. Indian officials have accused Washington of double standards, pointing to ongoing U.S. imports of Russian chemicals and fertilisers, allegations rejected by President Donald Trump .

The three-month operation, dubbed Serengeti 2.0, recovered USD 97.4 million, dismantled more than 11,000 malicious infrastructures, and underscored the urgent need for cross-border cooperation in fighting online crime.

Here’s a breakdown of actions taken:

Angola

In Angola, authorities dismantled 25 cryptocurrency mining centres run by 60 Chinese nationals. The crackdown also uncovered 45 illicit power stations, confiscating mining equipment and IT assets worth more than USD 37 million, which the government now plans to redirect to support power distribution in vulnerable areas.

Zambia

In Zambia, the FBI reported that authorities broke up a massive online investment fraud scheme that had lured 65,000 victims into fake cryptocurrency ventures through aggressive advertising campaigns. The fraud caused losses estimated at USD 300 million. Police arrested 15 suspects, seizing domains, mobile numbers, and bank accounts linked to the scam. In a separate case, investigators uncovered a scam centre suspected of ties to human trafficking, confiscating 372 forged passports from seven countries in joint operations with the Immigration Department in Lusaka.

Côte d’Ivoire

Côte d’Ivoire authorities dismantled a transnational inheritance scam with roots in Germany, arresting the main suspect and seizing electronics, jewellery, cash, vehicles, and documents. The scam, which tricked victims into paying fees for fake inheritances, caused losses of USD 1.6 million.

Other countries involved

Operation Serengeti 2.0 was carried out under the umbrella of the African Joint Operation against Cybercrime in other countries including; Benin, Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and the United Kingdom.

Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza praised the results, saying, “Each Interpol-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing and developing investigative skills across member countries. This global network is stronger than ever, delivering real outcomes and safeguarding victims.”

The operation ran from June to August 2025 and brought together investigators from across Africa and the United Kingdom to tackle high-impact cybercrimes such as ransomware, online scams, and business email compromise (BEC).

Iran Roundup: Oil exports surge, Iran insists on US compensation before talks, slow acceptance of free speech

Free speech sees rare win in Iran

Iran has withdrawn a proposed internet censorship bill after political and public backlash. Introduced after a brief conflict with Israel, the bill aimed to penalise "false" online content but drew criticism for threatening civil liberties and expanding censorship. The move underscores tensions in Iran between national security and digital rights, with critics warning the bill's vague terms could worsen repression in one of the world’s most restrictive online environments.

Iran’s oil exports surge

Despite sanctions and military strikes, Iran’s oil exports soared in the first half of 2025, reaching nearly 1.7 million barrels per day in June, totalling over $3.6 billion in revenue, according to Tankertrackers. This marks a 30–37% increase compared to January 2025 levels, outpacing export figures at the end of the Biden administration. The rise challenges U.S. goals to curb Tehran’s oil revenue, which funds domestic repression and regional threats. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s pledge to cut exports to near zero remains unmet.

Iran slams US sanctions on Indian firms as ‘modern economic imperialism’

Iran's Embassy in India condemned U.S. tariffs on Indian imports and sanctions on six Indian firms trading Iranian petrochemicals, calling it “modern economic imperialism.” Tehran accused Washington of weaponising sanctions to pressure independent nations like Iran and India. The embassy urged resistance to such policies, framing it as support for a stronger Global South. Iran's foreign ministry also called the sanctions a “malicious act” against its economic development.

Iran insists on US compensation before talks

Iran reaffirmed its commitment to uranium enrichment and ruled out resuming nuclear talks unless the U.S. compensates for damages from its recent conflict with Israel, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Financial Times. Araghchi cited deep mistrust of the Trump administration and strong domestic opposition to negotiations. He reiterated Iran’s stance on a peaceful nuclear program, referencing a longstanding fatwa banning nuclear weapons, and confirmed message exchanges with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff during and after the conflict.

Russia voices concern over threat of new strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities

Following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Russia called for renewed dialogue to resolve the nuclear issue. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed concern over further strikes and stressed that a deal with Tehran remains possible through diplomacy. The strikes came during a 12-day Iran-Israel conflict sparked by Israel’s June 13 aerial attack. The violence, which caused casualties on both sides, ended with a ceasefire on June 24. The US joined the conflict, targeting Iranian nuclear sites on June 22.

The move forms part of a national plan to rebuild the country’s law enforcement capacity in the face of the ongoing gang violence and institutional breakdowns.

In an interview, Fritz Alphonse Jean, president of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council, emphasised the urgent need for both institutional readiness and public safety to hold credible elections .

"For elections to happen, two conditions must be met: institutional readiness, which we are currently working on, and a secure environment,” Jean said. “When we speak of a wartime budget, it is precisely to ensure that law enforcement can operate effectively and maintain public safety,” he told Viory.

Jean confirmed that international partners, including Brazil, Mexico , and Colombia, are backing Haiti’s security plans. In addition to sending officers abroad, the government is bringing in international instructors to train larger groups of officers on the ground.

"The support we are receiving from countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Colombia is aimed at ensuring we have law enforcement forces capable of meeting the security challenges we are facing," he said.

The first group of military recruits is already in Mexico undergoing an eight-week specialised training course, with a second cohort expected to follow soon.

'Gun for hire': How Kenya’s police are being weaponised against dissenters

But after he was picked up from his home by police officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, he never came back. What followed was a tragic death in custody, a damning autopsy, and an eruption of public outcry.

Kenyan journalist Kioko Nyamasyo laid bare the grim realities of police violence in a country where he says, “the police are still in the colonial mentality... more, for lack of a better word, gun for hire.”

According to Nyamasyo, the police aren’t seen as protectors of public safety, but rather as tools of intimidation.

“If you are a minister, your cabinet secretary, you can order police around... So, you find in this political climate, police officers are now being used to intimidate opponents, and they can also be brought in to control the situation. And at the end of the day, they violate human rights,” he told Global South World.

Ojwang's arrest was reportedly linked to a post he made about the Deputy Inspector General of Police. “What happened is now, the Deputy Inspector General of Police made a complaint and police officers from the DCI went to take Ojwang from his home and to interrogate him.

Initial statements from authorities claimed Ojwang was taken to the hospital, and that's where he died.

An autopsy later confirmed Ojwang died while in police hands, and there were signs of head trauma, neck compression and bruises and lacerations across the body.

On June 25, widespread demonstrations rocked Kenya, and the police response was brutal.

“Normally, during protests, chaos will happen. Some shops will be broken into, tyres will be lit across the road, causing a traffic jam... So now, ideally and obviously, police must come in to contain the situation... But due to the nature of their training, their first reaction is to beat the people,” Nyamasyo said.

“The government has largely supported violence. The police are being used as a tool for power and control... The police department is under the Ministry of Interior, so it's directly under the presidency... It should be independent, but it's not.”

Reuters reported on July 9 that Kenya's President William Ruto said the police should shoot protesters who vandalise businesses in the leg to incapacitate them, two days after 31 people were killed during nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

He pointed out that opposition activists, bloggers, and dissenting voices are frequently arrested at the state’s direction. “So the police are just acting on orders of the government.”

Nyamasyo also highlighted a disturbing comment from Kenya’s Interior Minister: “The Minister for Interior Security said police should kill anyone who comes near the police post. But then he later retracted that and said, ‘No, I did not mean that. I meant that police should use any means to defend themselves.’ That's semantics.”

According to Nyamasyo, this pattern of abuse is not new and transcends political parties.

“In 2021, the current president, President William Ruto, was the deputy president, and he had a falling out... and former President Kenyatta used the police to intimidate his deputy. He even had his security withdrawn... He was kicked out by the same police.”

Ironically, when Ruto became president, the same tactics were allegedly used against his own deputy.

“It's easy when you are in a position to say, ‘This is bad.’ But now, when they get into power, they realise, ‘Oh, yeah, it's bad, but now it's working for me. Let me just continue.”

“You find, yeah, it's wrong, but really there's no law that you can prosecute them because they’re just acting wrong, but within the loopholes... For example, if you say a police officer, when his life is in danger, must do everything to protect himself, he's acting within the law. And then he shoots you. Then when he goes to court, he just says, ‘My life was in danger.’”

Czech Republic on July 17, 2025, amended its criminal code to equate the promotion of communism with Nazism. The updated law, signed by President Petr Pavel, enforces penalties of up to five years in prison for promoting totalitarian ideologies, including communist ones.

This places the country among a cluster of nations that now formally criminalise communist ideology, symbols, or parties.

The newly enacted amendment underscores a symbolic reckoning with the country's 20th-century past. The Czech Republic, once part of communist Czechoslovakia until the Velvet Revolution of 1989, has long wrestled with the legacy of communist oppression.

The new law bans the public promotion of communist ideologies, equates it legally with Nazism, which has long been criminalised under European post-WWII jurisprudence and penalises support for any totalitarian regime with up to five years in prison.

This legislative decision mirrors similar laws passed in the region over the last two decades, particularly in Eastern and Central Europe, where countries seek to distance themselves from their Soviet past.

The Czech Republic joins a growing list of countries that have already banned or restricted communist ideology, including Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, and the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia).

Each of these countries has laws criminalising the public display of communist symbols or the promotion of communism, often justified by historical trauma and national security concerns.

Georgia and South Korea also cited ideological threats from the past or ongoing geopolitical tensions as grounds for their bans. Indonesia also implements strict censorship and legal penalties on communist ideology since the 1965 anti-communist purge.

Countries such as Croatia and Slovakia also enforce similar legislation, while Germany, the United States, and others formerly banned such symbols but now generally allow them under protected free speech.

But at its core lies a major imbalance: just five countries — the United States , the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China- hold permanent seats and veto power.

These countries were granted this privilege after they emerged as victors of World War II. But the world has changed drastically since then — economically, politically, and demographically. Many argue it’s time the UNSC reflected that.

With over 50% of the world’s population living in Asia and Africa, why don’t these regions have a permanent voice at the table? Should countries like India be given a seat based on their population, or Pakistan based on military power, or regional influence? And what happens when permanent members are the very ones involved in the conflicts the UN is supposed to address?

According to officials, this is a major step towards the country's digital transformation.

The smart ID cards will feature embedded chips storing biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs, to offer a secure and unified way for individuals to verify their identity across multiple services.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security says the rollout will help tackle identity fraud, reduce duplication in public records and simplify access to essential services such as healthcare, banking, education, voting and employment .

Authorities also say the initiative is especially crucial for people living in remote communities, where people have to travel long hours to access government offices.

Mobile registration units will be dispatched to rural areas to ensure no one is excluded.

Speaking to local media , Executive Director Etienne Maritz called the project more than just a card update.

He described it as a foundation for digital inclusion, ensuring that all Namibians have a trusted, secure and consistent way of identifying themselves in both public and private sector transactions.

He also emphasised that the e-ID forms part of a larger national strategy to modernise state systems and improve integration with other Southern African countries.

To prepare the public for the shift, a national awareness campaign has been launched, beginning in the Khomas region.

One of its key events, an “Un-Conference on Digital Legal Identity,” will take place in Windhoek on 26 June 2025.

The event, among other things, will be open and informal than traditional conferences, to give residents a chance to ask questions directly and receive clear answers.

Over 500 participants, including local leaders and senior officials, are expected to attend the gathering.

Many people have complained that their nicknames are missing from their NID. Others have asked for their names to be added as second wives. These issues have led to many correction requests.

The director general of the National Identity Registration Division, ASM Humayun Kabir, said the EC has talked about adding a nickname section to the NID application form.

He also indicated that some women want to be listed as second wives on their husband's NID.

"In a meeting, we considered adding a nickname field to Form 2 of the NID, which could aid in accurate identification," he was quoted by The Business Standard .

However, the EC awaits the approval of higher authorities including the Election Commission and the Secretariat to make these changes.

Where is TikTok banned in 2025 and why?

As of February 2025, TikTok, the popular short-form video-sharing app owned by China's ByteDance, is banned or restricted in several countries due to concerns over data privacy, national security, and content moderation.

In April 2024, former US President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), mandating ByteDance to divest its U.S. TikTok operations by January 19, 2025, or face a nationwide ban.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld this law in January 2025, leading to TikTok's suspension in the country. However, President Donald Trump, inaugurated on January 20, 2025, issued an executive order granting a 75-day reprieve to explore potential solutions, including a sale to U.S. entities.

Although the app was not restored in the U.S. until February 13, it risks a complete ban if it is not sold after 90 days.

Beyond the US-TikTok brouhaha, TikTok has been unavailable in India for a little over two years now. Along with 58 other Chinese apps, the country cited national security threats as its primary reason.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban government on the other hand banned TikTok in 2022, stating that the platform's content was misleading the younger generation and did not align with Islamic laws. Iran followed suit in 2022, along with other social media platforms, due to concerns over the spread of misinformation and anti-government content.

Although China is the birth country, the international version of TikTok is not allowed. Users are rather encouraged to use Douyin, the local version which is believed to protect Chinese users from inappropriate or politically motivated content.

2024 was Turkey's hottest-year on record

Turkey has faced a dual challenge in 2024, marked by significant environmental and social developments. Firstly, the National Weather Agency announced that Turkey recorded its hottest year on record, with an average temperature soaring to 15.6°C, exceeding the previous record set in 2010. This rise further signifies a global trend, with other nations also reporting extreme temperatures. Consequently, concerns regarding climate change have intensified, particularly with the UN's World Meteorological Organisation categorising 2024 as the hottest year globally. Drought conditions have worsened, particularly in regions like the Aegean coast where rainfall was notably below normal levels, Barron's reports.

Reviewing attendance for rehearsals (If it is time, day or people)

In a notable domestic security development, Turkey's National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) apprehended Muhammed Dib Korali, an alleged mastermind behind the 2013 Reyhanlı bombings which resulted in the tragic loss of 53 lives. The operation, conducted in Syria, reflects Turkey's ongoing struggle against terrorism and its proactive measures to ensure national security. As reported by DuvaR , this significant arrest follows previous efforts, including the capture of another suspect in 2018, underscoring the persistence of these operations in response to past atrocities.

Skull found identified as 11-year-old boy, not Cleopatra's sister Arsinoë IV

Turning to historical matters, a recent examination of a skull previously thought to belong to Cleopatra's half-sister, Arsinoë IV, has revealed it belonged to an 11-year-old boy. Through advanced methodologies such as CT scans and DNA analyses, researchers confirmed the age and gender of the remains, elucidating their physical anomalies indicative of Treacher-Collins syndrome. This discovery raises intriguing questions about the identity and final resting place of Arsinoë IV, contributing to the mysteries surrounding ancient history, Gadgets 360 reports.

Turkey's Erdogan launches 'Year of the Family' with an attack on the LGBTQ+ community

In socio-political news, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the "Year of the Family," a campaign intertwined with his controversial viewpoints on societal structures. His discourse positioned the LGBTQ+ community as a perceived threat to traditional family values, prompting measures intended to bolster birth rates through various financial incentives. This declaration highlights the ongoing tensions between governmental frameworks and minority rights in Turkey, as the government maintains a recoil against criticisms and stringent measures against the LGBTQ+ demographic, as reported by ABC News .

Turkey stocks lower at close of trade; BIST 100 down 1.79%

Turkey's stock market experienced a decline, with the BIST 100 index down by 1.79%. This downturn was reflected across various sectors, particularly Wood, Paper & Printing, as well as Holdings & Investments. Conversely, Investing.com reports that some stocks managed to gain, while commodities reflected a mixed outlook with declines in gold futures and an increase in crude oil prices. The fluctuating valuation of the Turkish lira against the dollar adds another layer of complexity to the economic landscape, as investors navigate these changes.

This initiative encourages citizens to voluntarily surrender their firearms in exchange for financial incentives, reducing the number of illegal weapons in circulation and promoting public safety.

The programme, which began on January 10, 2025, offers substantial monetary rewards for various firearms. For instance, individuals can receive up to $1,300 for turning in machine guns and assault rifles.

The collection points are strategically located in the lobbies of churches and other religious institutions, ensuring accessibility and anonymity for participants.

President Claudia Sheinbaum during the launch emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader national security strategy. The strategy addresses the root causes of violence, consolidates the National Guard, strengthens intelligence and investigation efforts, and enhances coordination with federal entities.

"This programme consists of households surrendering firearms without any investigation. In exchange, they receive economic resources, and the weapon is destroyed. The goal of this program is disarmament—ensuring there are no firearms in our country," she explained.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has been a vocal advocate for the programme, urging citizens to participate without fear of legal repercussions. She highlighted the success of a similar initiative during her tenure as mayor of Mexico City, which significantly reduced the number of firearms in the capital.

Cambodia pardons jailed surrogate Philippine mothers

Cambodia has taken the significant step of pardoning and repatriating 13 Philippine women who were imprisoned for participating in a prohibited surrogacy scheme, which was deemed as attempted human trafficking. Initially detained in September, these women received four-year prison sentences in December, and upon their return to Manila, they were accompanied by three babies, with ten of the women still pregnant. Arab News reports that the Cambodian court highlighted substantial evidence indicating the intent to commercialise the babies, reflecting the complexities surrounding surrogacy laws. In Cambodia, surrogacy is illegal, while the Philippines lacks explicit legislation on the subject, leading to a legal grey area. Despite the prohibition, the demand for surrogacy continues to surge, particularly from Chinese couples seeking options.

Typhon missile to be deployed to boost PH deterrence capabilities

Philippine National Security Adviser Eduardo Año has declared that the deployment of the Typhon missile system is aimed at fortifying the country's defence capabilities, asserting it is not meant to threaten any other nation. He affirmed the Philippines' entitlement to enhance its national security and sovereignty without instigating conflict. In light of criticism from China, which warned that the missile deployment might trigger an arms race, Año described such assertions as unfounded speculation. According to GMA News , Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. echoed this sentiment, justifying the deployment as legal and necessary. The Typhon system, known as the Strategic Mid-range Fires System, is a versatile U.S. Army launcher with the capability to fire advanced missiles and has already participated in joint exercises with allied forces in 2024.

Philippines' online gambling ban prompts foreign worker exodus

In a notable policy shift, the Philippine government has announced a ban on online casinos catering to overseas customers, a decision that will come into effect by the end of the year. As reported by Nikkei Asia , this mandate, issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stems from rising concerns over criminal activities associated with the online gambling industry, which has led to the anticipated departure of approximately 24,000 foreign workers from the Philippines as a direct consequence of the new regulation.

The United States faces growing threats to its critical infrastructure as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Security Agency (NSA), and FBI jointly warn of cyberattacks orchestrated by Chinese state-sponsored actors. These attacks, targeting vital sectors such as Communications, Energy, Transportation Systems, and Water and Wastewater Systems, have raised alarms over potential future disruptions to national security.

European Repository of Cyber Incidents (EuRepoC) reveals that Volt Typhoon—also known as Vanguard Panda—has been identified as a key perpetrator in infiltrating critical systems. The group’s activities suggest a long-term strategy of positioning themselves for potential disruptive cyberattacks, underscoring the increasing sophistication and persistence of state-sponsored cyber threats.

The scope of the global cyber threat is vast. Between 2000 and 2023, the European Repository of Cyber Incidents (EuRepoC) recorded more than 2,500 politically motivated cyberattacks. Among these, 679 actors or groups were identified, revealing a complex web of international cyber aggression.

China has been implicated in 12% of these attacks, followed closely by Russia at 11.6%. Other major players include Iran (5.3%) and North Korea (4.7%). Yet, the covert nature of cyber warfare means that 45% of these attacks remain unattributed, leaving a significant portion of the threat landscape in the shadows.

Critical infrastructure remains a primary target, with nearly 20% of cyberattacks directed at systems vital to public safety and national stability. From power grids to water systems and transportation networks, these attacks threaten to disrupt essential services, creating vulnerabilities that could have catastrophic consequences.

This latest warning highlights the urgent need for heightened cybersecurity measures to protect against state-sponsored threats. As cyberattacks grow more frequent and complex, safeguarding critical infrastructure has become a priority for both national defence and global security. The ongoing challenge lies in uncovering and mitigating these covert threats before they escalate into full-scale disruptions.

$10bn power investment

Nigeria is embarking on a robust initiative to attract an ambitious $10 billion in private sector investment within a timeframe of five to ten years, primarily aimed at revamping its power sector. This strategic move addresses a notable funding gap identified in the infrastructural framework of the nation. Notably, discussions led by the Director General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) alongside the Minister of Power underline the critical role Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) will play in ensuring a reliable 24-hour power supply. According to Pulse Nigeria , the ICRC is dedicating efforts to streamline processes conducive to private investments while concurrently implementing stringent regulatory measures to guarantee accountability and effective project delivery.

Finance Minister Wale Edun unveiled plans to commence payment of pension arrears next week during an event orchestrated by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS) in Abuja. Minister Edun assured that the complications leading to payment delays have been thoroughly resolved, and a special committee has been formed to ensure that payments are fully completed by the end of this year. Reflecting on the challenges faced by pensioners, NUPCPS National Chairman Sylva Nwaiwu emphasized the pressing need for immediate government intervention, notably pointing out the lack of adjustments in benefits in the face of rising living costs, as reported by Pulse Nigeria .

Millions go hungry due to floods

An alarming hunger crisis is unfolding in Nigeria, severely accentuated by catastrophic flooding in northeastern Borno State. The recent dam collapse in September has had devastating repercussions, displacing numerous individuals and obliterating agricultural land. In addition to ongoing economic hardships and price surges attributable to a pervasive insurgency and poor infrastructure, millions in Nigeria are now reliant on aid, all while facing violent risks when seeking to work on local farms. As reported by DH , the World Bank’s alarming statistics reveal that around 40% of Nigeria's populace lives below the international poverty line, with a staggering 25 million individuals currently grappling with acute food insecurity—a figure projected to escalate to 33 million by mid-2024. Unfortunately, international aid efforts remain inadequate as attention is diverted to other pressing global crises.

13 college students suspended for bullying

Addressing incidents of violence and bullying in educational institutions, the Nigerian federal government has taken decisive action by suspending 13 students from the Federal Government College in Enugu State for six weeks. This suspension, decreed by Education Minister Tunji Alausa, comes in the wake of a disturbing viral video showcasing the bullying of a fellow SS1 student on November 7. A disciplinary committee has been constituted to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Concurrently, Premium Times adds that the Ministry is bolstering security measures at the school premises and providing counselling services for impacted students. Minister Alausa reiterated the commitment to fostering a secure learning environment within federal schools across Nigeria.

US insists no records on President Tinubu

In a concerning legal development, the U.S. government has asserted in a recent court filing that Nigerians possess "no right" to access President Bola Tinubu's historical records, alleging that he remains an active CIA asset. Sahara Reporters says agencies such as the CIA, FBI, and DEA have expressed that the confirmation or denial of records relating to Tinubu could jeopardise U.S. national security interests. The DEA has further stated that while it is important for Nigerians to be informed regarding their government, they inherently lack the entitlement to knowledge about the activities of their president. This stance comes on the heels of a prior court ruling which denied an emergency application for the disclosure of Tinubu's drug trafficking investigation records.

Islamabad High Court to hear Nawaz Sharif's appeal in Al-Azizia reference on merit

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is set to review Nawaz Sharif's appeal challenging his Al-Azizia reference conviction on its substantive merits. The division bench, led by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, will scrutinize key elements, including charges and evidence. This follows the same bench's acquittal of Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield reference on November 29. The Al-Azizia case, which led to a seven-year jail term and fines in 2018, revolves around Sharif's role in establishing Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment (HME) in Saudi Arabia. Sharif, returning to Pakistan in October after medical treatment in London, had his appeals revived by the IHC on October 24. The upcoming hearing will delve into the case's intricacies and assess the merits of Sharif's appeal.

Death toll rises to five in Karachi building fire tragedy

The death toll in the Karachi building fire near Ayesha Manzil has reached five, according to local police reports on Thursday. The fire originated in a mattress shop and was controlled with the efforts of 12 fire engines. Victims, aged 20 to 40, were identified, and two individuals sustained burn injuries. The Sindh Chief Minister has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. This marks the second major fire in Karachi within two weeks, following the Rashid Minhas Road building fire on Nov 25, which claimed 11 lives. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the Ayesha Manzil fire.

Pakistan's Army Chief says repatriation of illegal foreigners vital for national security

Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, stated on Thursday that the government's initiative to repatriate illegal foreigners, primarily undocumented Afghan migrants, is essential for national security and economic stability. General Munir, during his visit to Peshawar, highlighted that the repatriation process is being carried out with compassion and dignity, adhering to established norms. According to reports from local media, The News, the ongoing repatriation has seen over 255,000 individuals returning to Afghanistan from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, facilitated by major border crossings such as Torkham, Angor Ada, and Kharlachi. This decision is closely linked to the rise in terror attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, and the growing tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban administration in Kabul.

ADB approves $659 Million for inclusive growth projects in Pakistan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved $659 million for three distinct projects in collaboration with the federal government of Pakistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The objective of these initiatives, as reported by Dawn, is to promote inclusive and sustainable growth and development in Pakistan. The projects include measures to enhance domestic resource mobilization, rebuild schools damaged by the 2022 floods, and improve agricultural productivity to bolster food security. This funding aligns with ADB's strategy to support Pakistan's economic recovery from the cost-of-living crisis and floods, with an overarching goal of fostering long-term sustainable development. The approved projects consist of a $300 million loan for the Improved Resource Mobilization and Utilization Reform Program, $275 million for the Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project, and an $80 million concessional loan for the Food Security Support Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Accused of "conspiracy to commit subversion" for organizing an unofficial primary election in 2020, the activists argue it was part of Hong Kong's political landscape, while prosecutors claim it was a "massive scheme" against the government, potentially leading to life imprisonment upon conviction.

The trial, emblematic of Beijing's crackdown after imposing the national security law in 2020, marks a turning point in Hong Kong's political landscape.

Despite the city's partial democracy, the fate of the "Hong Kong 47" exemplifies how dissent has been curtailed, even in once-permitted channels.

The trial has garnered international attention, with critics condemning the impact of the national security law on political activism.

The accused, including politicians, protest leaders, academics, and journalists, come from diverse backgrounds and generations.

The trial, underway since February, has witnessed 31 guilty pleas, a strategy in Hong Kong that could lead to reduced sentences. If convicted, the defendants could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment.

The charges stem from a primary election held in 2020, aiming to select candidates for Legislative Council elections. The trial provides insights into how the national security law has altered Hong Kong's legal system, deviating from common law traditions.

It is being heard without a jury, and bail has been denied for most defendants, showcasing the law's impact on legal precedents.

As Hong Kong navigates these legal changes, the trial's verdict, expected in three to four months, holds significance not only for the "Hong Kong 47" but also for the city's future political landscape.

The broader impact of the national security law on judicial independence remains a subject of global scrutiny, shaping the narrative of Hong Kong's democratic aspirations.

The coalition deal, concluding almost six weeks of intensive negotiations after the October 14 general election, will result in Christopher Luxon assuming the role of prime minister as his conservative National Party secured the largest proportion of votes at 38%, according to a report from Associated Press.

Luxon expressed gratitude for the public's patience, noting policy compromises made by each party. The government aims to alleviate the cost of living, provide tax relief, enhance prosperity, and enhance law and order for the safety of citizens.

The leaders have committed to public service cuts, the training of 500 additional police within two years, and a shift in the Reserve Bank's mandate to focus solely on maintaining low inflation.

The deputy prime minister position will be shared between Winston Peters of the New Zealand First Party and David Seymour of the ACT Party, with Peters holding the role for the initial 18 months before passing it to Seymour. Peters, known for his contentious relationship with the media, criticized certain reporters.

“Look, please don’t start off this government with your antagonistic attitude,” he said, grinning, in response to one reporter’s question. “You’ve lost. You lost. Right?” said Peters, explaining that he does not anticipate any alterations to New Zealand's existing foreign policy regarding China.

While New Zealand relies on China for the purchase of a significant portion of its agricultural exports, it has also voiced escalating apprehension about China's heightened assertiveness in the Pacific region.

Seymour, set to assume the newly established position of regulation minister, expressed the view that the nation had been heading in an unfavorable direction under the preceding liberal government. He cited increasing prices, crime rates, and societal divisions as key concerns.

“We must now draw a line under that and work to ensure New Zealanders have hope that a government can, indeed, deliver better public services and return for their hard-earned taxes,” Seymour said.

In New Zealand's proportional voting system, alliances are typically necessary for parties to secure a governing majority.

Initially, on election night, the closely aligned National and ACT parties had just enough votes for governance. However, a final count, incorporating special votes, altered the landscape and led to more challenging three-way negotiations.

Chris Hipkins, the outgoing Prime Minister, had already conceded to Luxon on election night after deciding not to work with Winston Peters. Hipkins, who heads the liberal Labour Party, held the top position for a mere nine months, succeeding Jacinda Ardern, who unexpectedly stepped down in January, citing insufficient energy to fulfill the role adequately.

Ardern had won the previous election in a landslide, but her popularity declined as fatigue with COVID-19 restrictions grew, and inflation posed a threat to the economy.

Mangue further indicates that construction is slated to commence in February 2024 and will be under the supervision of a control company.

Protection of minors

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has signed a decree by which measures aimed at safeguarding the welfare of minors will be adopted in the country. Mbasogo emphasized that the purpose of Decree number 141/2023 is to bridge the gap in the country concerning the need for the relevant institutions to intensify their efforts to meet all existing demands for enhanced protection of minors in Equatorial Guinea, Real Equatorial Guinea reported. The president was in the company of the first lady, Mrs. Constancia Mangué Nsue Okomo.
