Thousands of people packed Hoa Lu Old Town in Ninh Binh on Tuesday as celebrations gathered pace for Vietnam's 81st National Day.

Crowds lined the waterfront for fireworks, flyboard displays and cultural performances ahead of the September 2 celebration.

Visitors also took boat rides on traditional lantern-adorned vessels and watched performances highlighting the history of Hoa Lu, Vietnam's ancient capital.

"Everyone here is very cheerful and friendly. In particular, the performances such as fireworks, water shows, and flyboard shows are very lively and make everyone who comes here feel happy," said a visitor from Hung Yen Province.

The celebrations also attracted international tourists.

"I think there's a lot going on, but I'm really thrilled. It's really beautiful, and I like the town. I'm definitely coming back," a German tourist shared.

Ninh Binh has recorded a surge in visitors during the five-day National Day holiday. The province expects nearly 777,000 tourist visits and tourism revenue of more than one trillion dong.

Authorities have increased safety controls on high-risk tourism activities, including flyboarding, following an accident involving an instructor and a tourist in Hoa Lu Ward in May.

Additional inspections of water-based activities have also been carried out at tourist destinations, including Hoa Lu Old Town, during the holiday period.

Vietnam marks its 81st National Day on September 2, commemorating the country's declaration of independence from French colonial rule in 1945. Celebrations are taking place across the country.
