Iran has accused the United States of undermining global nuclear non-proliferation efforts following unverified claims that Washington could be preparing a nuclear strike against Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the US as the "biggest threat to the nuclear non-proliferation regime" on Monday, warning that threats involving nuclear weapons could encourage countries to disregard international agreements.

His comments followed claims by American journalist Tucker Carlson that President Donald Trump was considering a nuclear attack on Iran, allegedly under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Threatening a country, even implicitly, with the possible use of a particular weapon is in itself a form of encouragement to violate the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," Baghaei said.

Despite his criticism of Washington, Baghaei maintained that Tehran remained committed to its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"We remain a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and as long as Iran remains a party to this treaty, it considers itself bound by the commitments set out in that document and obliged to comply with them," he added.

Carlson had earlier claimed on X that the Trump administration could make a decision on using nuclear weapons against Iran within days.

"Under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran," he wrote. "Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7."

However, Carlson provided no independently verifiable evidence to support his allegations, and neither Washington nor Israel has confirmed the claims.

Speaking at a campaign rally on Sunday, Trump also warned of possible further military action against Iran, saying the US could shut the country down.

Beyond the nuclear concerns, Baghaei addressed ongoing indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, insisting that any agreement would require the US to end its naval blockade and respect Iran's demands.

"The ball is now in America's court because we have clearly and transparently expressed our demands. Our demands are reasonable and logical. No final agreement can be reached, nor can the Strait of Hormuz be reopened or its security guaranteed, unless the US naval blockade ends and Iran's demands are respected," he said.

Baghaei also called for the removal of sanctions imposed after what he described as a violation of the Islamabad Agreement, alongside the release of frozen Iranian assets.

His remarks came after Iranian negotiators concluded three days of consultations with Qatari mediators in Doha.

The Iranian delegation departed on Sunday following discussions aimed at reaching an agreement with Washington to end the war and reduce regional tensions.
