Norway delivered one of the most dominant performances in Winter Olympic history at the 2026 Winter Games, finishing at the top of the medal table with 18 gold medals, the most by any nation at a single Winter Olympics, and 41 total medals across disciplines.

The 2026 Winter Games, officially titled the XXV Olympic Winter Games, brought together nearly 2,900 elite athletes from over 90 nations in northern Italy. Across 116 medal events in eight core sports, the competition delivered thrilling moments and historic breakthroughs. Norway Leads with Record Golds

Nordic skiing specialists led the charge for Norway, a nation long synonymous with Winter Olympic excellence. With 18 golds, 12 silvers, and 11 bronzes, Norway set new benchmarks for both individual and team success. The tally surpassed its previous Winter Olympic record of 16 golds, first set in 2022.

Highlighting the Norwegian campaign was Johannes Høsflot Klæbo , who delivered an extraordinary series of gold-medal performances, including victories in multiple cross-country events. His remarkable haul helped propel Norway’s overall ranking and carved his name into Winter Olympic lore.

The United States finished second on the final medal table with 12 gold medals and 33 total medals, marking its strongest Winter Olympics in terms of gold medals in more than seven decades. American athletes shone in a variety of competitions, from figure skating to speed skating and ice hockey, the latter sealing a dramatic gold in overtime against Canada on the closing day.

Standout American performances included record-setting outings in both individual and team events, showcasing a depth of talent across alpine, skating, and snow sports.

Several nations delivered memorable performances. The Netherlands and host nation Italy each claimed 10 gold medals, with the Dutch strong in speed skating and Italy setting its own national record for total medals at a Winter Games. Germany, France, Sweden, and Switzerland also posted double-digit medal hauls, illustrating the high level of competition across Europe.

Among historic firsts, Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen captured the country’s first-ever Winter Olympic medal and gold in alpine skiing, a milestone moment for South American winter sports. Georgia and Kazakhstan also reached the Winter Olympic podium for the first time, underlining the expanding global reach of winter athletics.

Latin America sets record presence at 2026 Winter Olympics

The figure surpasses the region’s previous record of 34 participants at the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, signalling a gradual expansion of winter sport participation in a part of the world better known for summer competitions.

Brazil leads the regional contingent with 14 competitors, the largest ever for the South American nation at a Winter Olympics, competing in five sports including alpine skiing, skeleton and bobsleigh. Argentina follows with around eight athletes in events such as alpine and cross-country skiing, luge and more. Mexico is also notable with several competitors, including figure skater Donovan Carrillo, who previously helped break a decades-long absence in Olympic figure skating finals and continues to be a focal point of Latin America’s winter sport narrative.

Smaller delegations from Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay and Puerto Rico round out the Latin American presence, each represented by one or two athletes in sports ranging from skeleton and cross-country skiing to alpine events. Colombia, for example, fields athletes in both cross-country skiing and skeleton, reflecting the broadening base of participation across the region.

For many of these competitors, reaching the Winter Olympics involves extensive preparation abroad, often training in snowy climates far from home while balancing limited local infrastructure and funding. Carrillo’s journey, training in Canada under elite coaching and returning as one of the region’s most visible competitors, illustrates both the challenges and aspirations of Latin American winter athletes.

The record delegation comes as the Games bring together more than 3,500 athletes from 93 nations, competing for medals in 16 disciplines, including figure skating, alpine skiing and luge. Latin America ’s expanded representation, although still modest compared with traditional winter sport powerhouses, reflects increasing ambition and investment in non-traditional sporting arenas.

While no Latin American competitor has yet won a Winter Olympic medal, the milestone of sending a record number of athletes in 2026 carries symbolic significance for the region. It highlights not only personal achievements but also the potential for broader development of winter sports culture across countries historically associated with warm climates. As the Milan-Cortina Games unfold, Latin American athletes continue to capture attention, fostering inspiration for future generations and signalling that ice and snow have a place in the region’s sporting story.

The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) said the move was prompted by the scale of harassment faced by athletes at recent major competitions, including the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where several Japanese competitors were subjected to sustained abuse online.

Japan’s chef de mission, Hidehito Ito, said a new monitoring system would aim to prevent athletes from being exposed to harmful content by having specialists track abusive posts in real time. They will subsequently ask social media platforms to remove the material.

The task force will consist of 22 staff members, with 16 based in Japan and six in Italy, supported by lawyers in both locations. The split setup is intended to ensure 24-hour coverage across time zones.

Ito said the JOC wants to act quickly before abusive messages spread or reach athletes directly, adding that lessons from Paris underscored the need for stronger, more proactive measures.

Japan’s heightened focus on online abuse reflects broader changes at home.

Since the 2020 death of wrestler and reality television star Hana Kimura following cyberbullying, authorities have strengthened penalties for online harassment, including prison terms and fines for platform operators that fail to act promptly.

The push mirrors concerns raised by international sports bodies in recent years.

A study published by World Athletics following the Tokyo 2020 Olympics found widespread abuse directed at athletes on social media, particularly during major competitions.

Conducted with Threat Matrix, the study analysed more than 240,000 tweets linked to 161 Olympic athletes over a four-week period in 2021, using artificial intelligence tools to identify discriminatory language, threats and abusive imagery.

Of the athletes targeted, the vast majority were women, who accounted for 87% of identified abusive posts. Two Black female athletes alone received nearly two-thirds of all detected abuse.

Sexist and racist messages made up more than half of the abuse identified, raising concerns about the psychological toll on athletes and the potential impact on performance during high-pressure events.

World Athletics said the results highlighted gaps in existing safeguards on social media platforms and underscored the need for closer cooperation between sporting bodies and technology companies.

For Japan, those findings reinforce the urgency of intervention.

Officials say the Milan Cortina approach will be adjusted as the Games progress, with regular communication between the JOC and the IOC to respond to emerging risks.

How an Olympic gold medal costs less than a high-end smartphone

The gold inside an Olympic gold medal is worth less than the price of a flagship smartphone. Surprising, right?

According to Reuters , a modern Olympic gold medal contains only around 6 grams of actual gold, with the rest made mostly of silver. Based on recent market prices, the metal content of an Olympic gold medal is valued at about $800.

This, however, has not always been the case, as the gold medals given at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games were made of pure gold .

By contrast, today’s high-end smartphones from Apple, Samsung, and other major brands easily sell for $1,000 to $1,600 depending on features.

The gap goes beyond raw materials: smartphones reflect years of research, advanced chip design, and global supply chains spanning dozens of countries. The true cost is in the technology, not the physical components.

But while a phone may cost more, its value is transactional. An Olympic medal, on the other hand, carries a deeper human meaning, representing discipline, sacrifice, national pride, and personal triumph.

Athletes do not train for years for the $800 worth of metal. They chase something that cannot be priced.

The comparison comes at a time when countries preparing for future Olympic Games are facing increased budget scrutiny and inflation-driven cost adjustments, issues Reuters has also highlighted in recent coverage of global sporting events and government spending.

Pakistan wins U.S. tariff relief

The United States and Pakistan announced a trade deal Thursday, which Islamabad said would boost investment and reduce tariffs, though exact rates weren’t disclosed. Pakistan's finance ministry called it the start of a new era of economic cooperation across sectors like energy, IT, crypto, and mining. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the agreement reflected broader strategic goals beyond trade. Previously facing a possible 29% tariff, Pakistan secured a suspension ahead of the August 1 trade talks deadline, aiming for better terms than regional competitors like Vietnam (20%) and India (threatened with 25%).

Intel says Pakistan is rebuilding terror camps

Pakistan is allegedly reviving terrorism infrastructure with a new approach, an intelligence report reveals. The Pakistan Army, ISI, and other agencies are reportedly aiding major terror groups in reconstructing at least 13 camps and launchpads destroyed in Operation Sindoor, especially near the Line of Control in PoK and the Jammu border. Sites named include Kel, Shardi, Dudhniyal, Lipa Valley, and Jura, among others. Four launchpads near Jammu — Masroor, Chaprar, and a drone hub in Shakargarh — are also being reactivated using advanced techniques and funding from state entities.

Olympian killed in climbing accident

Olympic gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier died after being struck by falling rocks while climbing Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, officials said Wednesday, July 30. Bad weather delayed rescue efforts, and her body has not been recovered. Her partner survived, and local authorities said any recovery attempt would respect her family’s wishes. An Instagram post stated Dahlmeier did not want anyone to risk their life retrieving her body. German President Steinmeier paid tribute, calling her an “exceptional sportswoman” and recalling awarding her the Silver Laurel Leaf in 2018.

Pakistan keeps key rate unchanged to curb inflation

Pakistan’s central bank kept its key rate at 11% on Wednesday, defying expectations of a cut due to worsening inflation driven by higher energy prices. The State Bank cited rising gas costs and a widening trade deficit as key risks, noting that inflation pressures had intensified. All 15 analysts in a Reuters poll had predicted a rate cut. Central Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad said it was prudent to wait rather than risk reversing a premature easing move.

Pakistan repeats claims of 'resounding success' in Operation Sindoor

Pakistan dismissed India’s Operation Sindoor statements in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, July 30, as “baseless and provocative,” accusing New Delhi of spreading disinformation and jingoism. It reiterated claims of military success and warned Indian leaders to acknowledge their losses and third-party roles in the ceasefire. Islamabad also alleged India lacked evidence for the Pahalgam attack and failed to meet strategic goals, while praising its military response as decisive.

Tirop, a celebrated long-distance runner who set a world record in the women’s 10-kilometre road race in Germany and won two World Athletics Championship bronze medals, was found stabbed at her home in Iten, Rift Valley, on October 13, 2021. She was laid to rest on October 23, 2021, the day she would have turned 26.

The main suspect in her murder, her husband Ibrahim Rotich, has failed to appear in court yet again, leaving Tirop’s family devastated and angry over the slow pace of the case.

“I don't know what the court is going to tell us today, and we don't want them to play any games,” said Dinah Tirop, Agnes’s mother. “We want that man to be found and apprehended. That man did us no good, and the court is taking it lightly. Why is the court taking this case lightly, while this man killed my child?,” she shared with Viory.

Kenyan Olympian murder trial postponed as husband and prime suspect fails to attend court

Agnes’s father, Vincent Tirop, echoed the family’s frustration. “Since the year 2021, it's been about five years now, but we have not gotten justice for Agnes. Now we are calling on the government, especially the Judiciary and Chief Justice Martha Koome. We want to see justice for our daughter granted,” he said outside the Eldoret High Court, where family members gathered wearing shirts printed with Agnes’s photo.

High Court Judge Robert Wananda addressed the case, acknowledging updates from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) while emphasizing the sensitivity of ongoing efforts to locate the suspect. “Having heard from Corporal Ndeto from the DCI, who has briefed the court on the progress made… I grant the DCI through Corporal Ndeto more time to proceed and continue with the efforts to trace and apprehend the accused person,” Justice Wananda said.

The judge set the next court mention for September 18, 2025, but assured the family that if Rotich is apprehended earlier, he will be brought before the court immediately.

Female lifters set Olympic milestones for Thailand

In recent months, Thailand has showcased its prowess in weightlifting, particularly highlighting the remarkable achievements of female athletes who have garnered a substantial 14 out of 17 total Olympic medals, including five prestigious golds. According to IWF , this journey began with Khassaraporn Suta's bronze medal win in the 58kg category during the 2000 Olympics, marking the inception of female Olympic participation for Thailand. The success continued with Udomporn Polsak clinching the first gold for a Thai female athlete in the 53kg category at the 2004 Olympics. The momentum carried on until the 2016 Rio Games, where Sinphet Kruaithong made history as the first male Thai lifter to achieve medal success, securing bronze in the 56kg event.

The tranquil Yinyom Beach in Pattaya, Thailand, was disrupted by a tragic event involving a 40-year-old Chinese tourist, Ronghua Qiu, whose lifeless body was discovered on the morning of Saturday, April 5. The examination of the body revealed signs of trauma, specifically abrasions and a notable split wound above the eyebrow, suggesting a violent occurrence before his death. As reported by The Nation , medical experts estimated that Qiu had been deceased for approximately 6 to 12 hours at the time of discovery. Holding a Thailand Privilege Card, Qiu had been residing in the country since early 2023, and a passbook found alongside him indicated a balance of 60,000 baht.

Thailand’s top 10 fake news revealed

Thailand's Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has taken proactive measures to combat misinformation, identifying the top 10 fake news stories that circulated in the past week. The most concerning item on the list was a false tsunami warning affecting Phuket and Samut Prakan provinces stemming from an earthquake. Between March 27 and April 3, the DES's Anti-Fake News Centre diligently monitored over 837,000 social media messages, revealing that 599 required verification due to their potential to mislead the public. The Nation said the prevalent themes of misinformation pertained to natural disasters, government policies, and health-related products. Key examples of fake news included alarming claims of tsunamis, structural failures, and distorted economic forecasts.

From May 1, electronic arrival cards become mandatory for tourists in Thailand

To modernise its travel infrastructure, Thailand has announced a transformative initiative requiring all tourists to complete an electronic arrival card before entering the country, effective from May 1. This digital approach replaces the traditional paper-based system, mandating that travellers register online at least three days before their arrival, providing essential personal and travel details. Azer News reports that the primary objective of this initiative is to enhance the immigration process, bolstering security measures and improving overall data management. This initiative not only reflects Thailand's ambition to evolve as a "smart travel destination" but also aligns with the broader global trend of enhancing travel experiences through technology and innovation.

Known as a high-energy tag sport , kho kho has been played across southern Asia for more than 2,000 years.

Although its rules were formalised in the early 20th century, kho kho has largely remained in cricket’s shadow in India. It was briefly showcased as a demonstration sport at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but failed to gain lasting international attention.

Now, nearly a century later, the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in New Delhi has drawn teams from 23 countries, highlighting the sport's growing global appeal.

Nasreen Shaikh, a 26-year-old player on India's women's team, reflected on the sport’s rising profile. “Whenever we ask people if they’ve played kho kho, they always smile, recalling their childhood days. But now, the platform is gaining global recognition. Playing in a World Cup is the first barrier crossed; the next big step is making it to the Olympics,” she told the AFP.

One of the sport's most significant transformations has been its transition from mud courts to mats, which has made it more accessible to an international audience. "That change revolutionised the game, making it global," said Sudhanshu Mittal, President of the Kho Kho Federation of India. "We are now in 55 countries and aim to reach 90 by the end of this year."

A beauty queen's journey through scandal to an athlete's battle to an Olympic gold amidst fierce scrutiny.

From sports to politics and entertainment, here are the five most inspiring comebacks of the year:

Chidimma Adetshina’s Journey to Miss Universe Glory

Chidimma Adetshina’s rise to the Miss Universe stage was far from conventional. Born in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, Adetshina's multicultural background fuelled her powerful presence. She first gained attention during the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, where her charm, self-assurance, and commitment to social causes made her an early fan favourite. However, her path was marred by controversy. Questions about her citizenship and allegations of identity fraud led to an investigation by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs. Despite these challenges, Adetshina withdrew from the pageant , citing concerns for her safety and well-being. But this setback didn't define her. Embracing her Nigerian roots, she competed in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant and emerged victorious, representing Taraba State. She then went on to place 1st runner-up in the Miss Universe competition, marking the highest ranking ever achieved by a Nigerian contestant. Additionally, she was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, a true testament to her resilience and self-determination.

Imane Khelif: Algerian Boxer’s Olympic Gold

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s journey to Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games was not just a victory in the ring but a powerful statement in the ongoing debate over gender identity in sports. After enduring intense online abuse and scepticism over her womanhood, Khelif emerged as a champion in the women’s welterweight division, defeating Yang Liu of China 5-0 in the final. Her triumph at Roland Garros was the culmination of eight years of hard work, and it was celebrated by fans chanting her name and waving Algerian flags. Khelif’s gold medal not only solidified her place in history but also became a symbol of defiance against unjust scrutiny. Her resilience in the face of criticism and personal attacks made her victory even sweeter, proving that strength comes in many forms.

Donald Trump's Political Comeback

Four years after leaving the White House, Donald Trump secured a remarkable comeback in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Despite facing two assassination attempts and multiple legal battles, including charges related to the Capitol riots, Trump’s message resonated with millions of Americans, especially in key battleground states . The election campaign was one for the history books. With his original opponent, President Joe Biden, dropping out just months before the election, Trump’s victory is seen as a testament to his enduring political appeal. While Trump prepares for his second term, questions remain about the loyalty of his advisers and the potential direction of his presidency.

Simone Biles: The Comeback Queen at the Paris Olympics

Simone Biles faced immense pressure and criticism after her withdrawal from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, with many unfairly labelling her a "quitter." But at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she silenced her doubters with an extraordinary performance, claiming three gold medals and leading Team USA to victory in gymnastics. Biles’ struggles, including trauma from sexual abuse by the former U.S. gymnastics doctor and the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, made her 2021 withdrawal understandable. But her return to the Olympic stage, filled with grace, strength, and focus, reminded the world of her unparalleled talent. In her comeback , she advocated for mental health awareness and proved that resilience isn't just physical but emotional too.

Senegal's President: From Prison to the Palace in 20 Days

Senegal’s president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, made a dramatic and improbable return to power after spending 20 days in prison. Originally scheduled for elections in February, the process was delayed by the previous president, Sali, who accused constitutional judges of interference. Despite the turbulence, the election eventually took place, and the imprisoned candidate triumphed, securing a remarkable comeback from the confines of a prison cell to the presidential palace in just 20 days. In April, Faye was sworn in as president, and he later appointed Ousmane Sonko as the prime minister.

Hundreds gathered at the Kimana Reserve, about 200 kilometers from Nairobi, to witness the "Maasai Olympics," featuring 160 athletes, including 40 young women. The event replaces the traditional "Olamayio," a Maasai rite of passage where young men hunted lions to demonstrate their skills, choose leaders, and attract partners. "Since we started the Maasai Olympics in 2012, there hasn't been a single lion hunt planned by the warriors," said Samuel Kaanki, the event's coordinator. While women currently compete in only the 100 and 1,500 meters, organizers are planning to expand their participation in future editions.

Born with a condition requiring prosthetic legs below the knees, Hugues trains with the intensity of any able-bodied athlete.

"Your hands, Pierre! Hit him in the body!" his trainer shouts as he sharpens his craft.

Invited to the United States by former French heavyweight Christophe Mendy, Hugues arrived in late November for his first U.S. tour to showcase his talent in the world’s boxing capital.

An accomplished amateur boxer, he sees this as an opportunity to secure funding for his career, which has faced financial hurdles in his native France. “I’ve always seen myself as an able-bodied athlete, with the same passion—sometimes greater—to achieve the same result,” Hugues says, his quiet determination evident over the hum of the Harlem gym.

With plans to turn professional within two years, Hugues hopes to make his mark and inspire others on his journey to Olympic greatness.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif prepares legal action over leaked medical report

The controversy erupted after a leaked medical report surfaced this week, claiming that Khelif, who won gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has XY chromosomes, typically associated with males.

According to a report published by Reduxx, medical records accessed by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia indicate that Khelif has "testicles" and an XY chromosome pattern, suggesting a condition related to sexual development.

The report was allegedly compiled in June 2023 through a collaboration between Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers.

IOC who labelled the report as "unverified documents whose origin cannot be confirmed" says that Khelif's legal proceedings will be against those responsible for the leaked report and the subsequent media coverage.

Although she was born female and does not identify as transgender or intersex, her participation in the Olympics sparked widespread controversy. This was especially evident on social media after Italian boxer Angela Carini forfeited their Olympic bout just 46 seconds into the match.

This is not the first legal journey the celebrated boxer is embarking on. Imane Khelif, 25, who received a hero's welcome upon her return to Algeria after her Olympic triumph, has already filed a complaint in France for online harassment.

The lawsuit, filed with French authorities, alleges British author J.K. Rowling, known for the Harry Potter book franchise and SpaceX founder Elon Musk contributed to the cyberbullying she endured during and after the 2024 Olympics through their public comments and social media posts.

The IOC has expressed its support for Khelif, condemning the abuse she has faced and emphasising that all athletes at the Paris 2024 Games complied with the competition's eligibility and medical regulations.

"The IOC is saddened by the abuse that Imane Khelif is currently receiving," a spokesperson said.

Her composed performance during the competition made her an internet sensation, leading to a surge in global attention.

" People now refer to me as 'Shooter Kim Ye-ji,' rather than just 'Kim Ye-ji'," she told the AFP adding, "I want to continue working so that the word 'shooter' will always be associated with me."

Since her Olympic success, Kim, 32, has been overwhelmed with interview requests, modelling offers from luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, and even an invitation to appear in a short film as an assassin alongside Indian actress Anushka Sen. Despite the whirlwind of attention, Kim remains humble, expressing that she plans to continue working hard to maintain or improve her performance. "I don’t think my level will drop," she said confidently.

Kim’s journey into shooting started unexpectedly. At the age of 12, while attending a gym class, her PE teacher, who was also a shooting director, asked students to raise their hands if they wanted to try shooting. When no one volunteered, the director randomly selected names, and Kim was one of them. At that time, she could barely lift the gun, weighing less than 30 kilograms in her first year of middle school. “I didn’t have the strength to hold the gun with one hand,” she recalled.

Though shooting wasn’t her initial goal, watching older students at the range working hard to win first place inspired her. She, too, wanted to stand at the top. Her hard work paid off, and now, she’s not only a national champion but an international sensation.

While she embraces her newfound fame, Kim remains focused on her sport . "I think I could keep shooting until I’m 50," she mused. She also hopes that even when she engages in activities outside of shooting, people will still remember her for her skills on the range.

Mao Ning, the ministry's spokesperson, emphasised China’s "zero-tolerance" attitude towards doping and urged that "sports issues should not be politicised," calling for equal treatment of all athletes and a fair competitive environment.

"On principle, China has always strictly abided by international doping regulations and has a zero-tolerance attitude toward doping. I also want to emphasise that sports issues should not be politicised. All athletes from all countries should be treated equally, and there should be practical safeguards for a fair competition environment," said Ning.

The WADA report, authored by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier, found no evidence of favouritism towards China. However, it highlighted areas where WADA’s anti-doping rules and administrative processes could be improved.

The investigation followed concerns over the participation of 11 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned heart medication ahead of the Paris Olympics. WADA acknowledged the findings and said it would work on strengthening its procedures, the AFP reports.

Despite rainy weather, the event celebrated the end of a memorable summer of sports in Paris, following the Olympics earlier this year.

Tony Estanguet, the chief organiser for Paris 2024, hailed the past six weeks as a "historic summer" for France, noting how the Games helped heal recent political divisions. "This summer will remain etched in people's memories," Estanguet was quoted by AFP.

The ceremony included the extinguishing of the Paralympic flame and a high-energy concert with performances by French electronic music legends Jean-Michel Jarre, Cassius, Busy P, and Kungs. DJ Martin Solveig wrapped up the night with hits like "Hello" and Daft Punk’s "One More Time."

China led the medal standings with 94 gold medals. Great Britain finished second with 49 golds, while the USA secured third place with 36. Ukraine placed seventh with 22 golds, and France ended eighth with 19 golds.

On the final day, Switzerland won both wheelchair marathons, with Catherine Debrunner triumphing in the women’s race and Marcel Hug in the men’s. The Netherlands retained their women’s wheelchair basketball title with a 63-49 win over the USA. The American women, last champions in Rio 2016, will have to wait until Los Angeles 2028 for their next chance.

Angel Zheng, the 24-year-old owner of Isshiki Matcha, is behind the import of these coveted treats, now available in the East Village.

"Hi, I’m Angel, the owner of Isshiki Matcha. We’ve imported a thousand Olympic muffins for everyone to try," Zheng is quoted by the AFP. "It’s not about the recipe; it’s about being part of Olympic history. You might not be an Olympic athlete, and you can’t go to the Olympic Village, but you can have a piece of the Olympics here in New York City," she added.

Zheng detailed the effort behind bringing the muffins stateside, noting the logistical challenges. "As soon as the French cargo was on the plane, it was all up to us. We had to clear customs, go through FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval ourselves, and handle all the ground transportation in New York," she explained. These extra steps contributed to the muffins' price of $10 each.

Despite the cost, the demand for the Olympic muffins has been strong, with many eager to experience a slice of the viral sensation.

During a press conference in Saint Dennis, northern Paris, on September 2, IPC spokesperson Craig Spence expressed the importance of retaining the symbol in the French capital, especially after Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced plans to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower post-Games, as reported by AFP.

"I'd really love us to have a place where the Agitos can remain here in the city, celebrating what I think, by some margin right now, is the most spectacular Paralympic Games in our history," Spence stated.

The IPC official highlighted the impact of previous occasions like the Tokyo Games disclosing that there remain “many Agitos in the Japanese capital”, commemorating the great Games that took place there.

“We shouldn't forget about the Agitos. We shouldn't forget that the Paralympics have also been here (Paris), and are here," he added.

Supporting the success of the ongoing Paralympic Games , Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps shared, "The great news is that the ticket sales are continuing to fly. I can tell you that we have now reached the milestone of 2.3 million tickets sold for the Paralympic Games, so it's a clear success for all of us. The French public is falling in love with these Paralympic Games. We're so happy with this success and more to come."

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which commenced on August 28, will continue until September 8.

The Village, which will host a total of 4,400 athletes competing from August 28 to September 8, welcomed delegations from countries including Chile, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and South Africa.

Now, it is preparing to accommodate approximately 180 Paralympic delegations, starting with the arrival of the chefs de mission early on the morning of Sunday, August 18.

The Village, originally designed with accessibility, required only minimal adjustments to meet the specific needs of Paralympic athletes. Laurent Michaud, the Village director, highlighted that “public spaces, roads, sidewalks, and crosswalks were all created to be navigable by wheelchair users, adhering to universal accessibility standards for new urban developments.”

Michaud added, “We’re adding temporary grab bars in the bathrooms and wheelchairs in the showers to facilitate transfers,” ensuring that all athletes can comfortably and safely navigate their living spaces during the Games.

In the Village apartments, only units with at least one bathroom adapted for people with reduced mobility (PRM) will be used. This adaptation reduces the number of required beds from 14,000 during the Olympics to 9,000 for the Paralympics, allowing for a more efficient use of space.

The race is scheduled to take place in Zurich, Switzerland, on September 4, a day before the city’s Diamond League meet.

Fans and pundits alike are buzzing with curiosity: What happens when two of the biggest names in track and field cross disciplines?

Armand Duplantis, the Swedish pole vault superstar, continues to redefine what’s possible in his sport. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, he broke his own world record for the ninth time, clearing 6.25 metres to claim his second consecutive Olympic gold medal.

The Norwegian Karsten Warholm, the fastest-ever 400-meter hurdler, still holds the world record of 45.94 seconds, which he set during his run at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021. Warholm’s career achievements also include three world championship titles and a recent silver medal from the Paris Games.

The concept of elite athletes from different disciplines competing against each other isn’t entirely new. For years, sports fans have indulged in debates over fantasy matchups, such as whether sprint legend Usain Bolt could have outrun football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo during their prime.

While these hypothetical scenarios never materialised, the upcoming Duplantis-Warholm showdown is a rare opportunity to see such a crossover in real life.

However, this won’t be the first time Duplantis and Warholm have taken on the 100-metre dash. Warholm clocked a time of 10.49 seconds back in 2017, while Duplantis ran 10.57 in 2018.

The Swedish pole vaulter has long expressed a desire to take part in sprint relays for his country.

"I would have loved to do that. And I would love to be part of breaking the Swedish record," he said in a recent interview with Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter. Duplantis revealed that he kept pace with a training partner who ran 10.30 seconds.

Although we never saw the fastest man alive Usain Bolt take on football’s greatest Cristiano Ronaldo, we are sure to witness two of the biggest names in track and field athletics, Duplantis and Warholm face-off in this 100-metre sprint.

The Algerian welterweight champion, who recently clinched gold at the Paris Olympics, took the opportunity to highlight the significant role of Algerian women in her success and society at large.

Imane's journey to Olympic gold has not been without its challenges. She faced intense scrutiny and gender questions from opponents, yet she remained steadfast.

On Friday, August 9, Khelif won the Olympics women's 66kg final against China's Yang Liu in a unanimous points decision, having been the focus of intense scrutiny in the French capital in the past fortnight.

"The answer [to critics] came through the result In every match, I wanted to show the strength and performance of women and Algerian women in particular. As for the fierce campaign I had to face, and you all know what it was like, praise be to God the Algerian people supported me. Praise be to God, we have restored Algeria's reputation and raised the Algerian flag in Paris, which is the most important thing. We brought joy to the Algerian people and restored Algerian women's reputation," Khelif said.

Khelif has also filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment, her lawyer announced on Saturday, August 10.

"The boxer Imane Khelif has decided to begin a new fight, a fight for justice, dignity and honour," Nabil Boudi said in a statement, saying Khelif had filed the complaint for "aggravated online harassment... to Paris prosecutors". He added: "The investigation will determine who was behind this misogynist, racist and sexist campaign, but will also have to concern itself with those who fed the online lynching."

Alongside Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who won the 57kg women's final on Saturday, Khelif was disqualified from last year's world championships due to failing gender eligibility tests. However, both were cleared to compete in Paris.

Paris bid a spectacular farewell to the Olympics on August 11, closing an event that has been hailed as one of the greatest in history.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach praised the Games as “sport at its best” and playfully dubbed them “Seine-sational,” referencing the river featured in the opening ceremony.

The closing ceremony saw around 9,000 athletes celebrated by 270 performers in a tribute to the spirit of sport.

Léon Marchand, the French swimmer who won four gold medals, started the ceremony by collecting the Olympic flame from the Tuileries Gardens and bringing it to the Stade de France. French rugby star Antoine Dupont, who led France to a rugby sevens gold, carried the national flag into the stadium as athletes filled the field.

The ceremony also marked the start of the countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Simone Biles and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass received the Olympic flag, while Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance by abseiling into the stadium and then riding off on a motorbike.

A pre-filmed segment showed Cruise travelling from Paris to Los Angeles, skydiving into the city, and decorating the Hollywood sign with Olympic rings. The event concluded with performances by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Billie Eilish.

The Games, held over 17 days against Paris’s iconic landmarks, ended with the United States finishing at the top of the medal table, just ahead of China. The US women’s basketball team clinched the final gold medal with a 67-66 win over France, giving the USA a total of 126 medals compared to China’s 91.

Airport takeovers

The government of Panama has announced that three international airports will be handed over to a single company for administration under a concession. President Mulino stated that the airports have deteriorated and that the selected company must have experience in airport management and sufficient liquidity. According to BN Americas , interested parties will be given access to a database to obtain all the information they require on the airports to participate in the selection process.

Maduro rejects 'asylum'

Venezuelan President Maduro rejects Panama's offer of safe passage to a third country for a political transition. The Print reports that Panama's President offered safe passage to facilitate Maduro's departure, but Maduro accused Panama of being influenced by the United States. Venezuela's electoral results remain disputed, and several Latin American countries have cut diplomatic ties with Venezuela.

Police give out trauma kits

Panama City Police are equipping schools with mobile rescue units for emergency injuries. The kit's monitor offers instructions for treating various injuries, enabling almost anyone to provide care. “This system is designed to assist the untrained. With that being said, it is colour-coded for every item that is within it. It also comes with an iPad monitor so that you can just follow the prompts,” Panama City Police Captain Billy Carstarphen said as reported by My Pan Handle .

Olympic wins

Panama celebrated its first Olympic medal, won by a woman, as boxer Atheyna Bylon took home the silver in Paris in 2024. The entire country cheered her on as she fought in the heavyweight final. Bylon, a police officer, comes from a humble background and has quickly risen in the world of boxing. Her historic achievement is a significant milestone for Panamanian boxing, reports The Tico Times .

US urged to expedite resources for repatriating migrants

Panama's President has asked the US to expedite aid for repatriating migrants crossing through the dangerous Darien Gap. The US had agreed to fund the repatriation of migrants entering Panama without authorisation. This came after Panama implemented measures to reduce irregular migrant crossings through the Darien. According to Mint , the President expressed concern about a new wave of Venezuelan migrants and announced plans to repatriate Venezuelan migrants to Colombia. The US Embassy did not immediately respond to the request for comment.

Delayed Akon project raises concerns

Akon's $6 billion futuristic African metropolis project in Senegal faces an ultimatum from the government to commence substantial construction work or risk losing the land allocated for the project. The site remains undeveloped after four years, and financial viability concerns have been raised. Akoin cryptocurrency, touted as the project's economic backbone, has also plummeted in value. Newsweek reports that local leaders and residents are now expressing scepticism, and the project manager is awaiting further instructions to proceed with construction. Akon is expected to visit Dakar soon to address concerns and reassure stakeholders of the project's viability.

Preparations for the Youth Olympics

Senegal is preparing to host the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar in 2026. Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour performed at the Africa Station in Paris, showing the country's readiness for the event. The mayor of Île Saint-Denis is also working towards the Youth Olympics and has received requests to visit from other cities hosting future Olympics. According to RFI , N'Dour emphasised the importance of solidarity among African nations in supporting sports and culture and praised the diversity of French champions at the Paris Olympics. He also mentioned his fascination with fencing.

Senegal appoints new judges

Senegal's new leadership is preparing a "witch hunt," claimed the former ruling party, after several judges were replaced. The opposition party APR stated that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's new government, which took office in April, is using the guise of accountability to settle scores, following recent arrests of opposition figures, reports Barron's .

Islamic veil controversy

In Senegal, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has called for schools to allow girls to wear the Islamic veil, sparking controversy among Christians. The Catholic community has expressed indignation and urged schools to update their regulations to prevent conflicts over the issue. This is a recurring debate, with a recent example in 2019. As reported by La Croix International , despite the controversy, Catholic schools in Senegal are highly sought after and attended by political leaders.

Senegalese taxman surpasses expectations

Senegal’s tax authority, DGID, exceeded expectations by collecting 1,309 billion CFA francs (USD2.2 million) in the first half of 2024. This reflects the resilience of the Senegalese economy. According to APA News , the goal for the year is 2,700 billion CFA francs (USD4.5 million), with a focus on property tax. The director is optimistic about meeting and surpassing future targets.

The team was met by jubilant supporters and dignitaries at the airport, followed by a celebratory procession that led them to a stadium where they were honoured with a ceremony featuring traditional dance and musical performances. Among the performers were traditional dancers draped in South Sudanese flags, while political figures joined in chanting and dancing to patriotic songs.

Luol Deng, president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF), addressed the crowd, calling the team’s Olympic journey a breakthrough moment. "When we first started, nobody thought that South Sudan had a place, not only in Africa but in the world, to compete. Now, people are starting to see our potential, and because of you, we are on our way," Deng said.

"For years and years and years, South Sudan has not had the opportunity and has not had the chance to be able to show the rest of the world our talent, to show the rest of the world our unity, and to show the rest of the world what's really in our heart. And right now, South Sudan is the heart of Africa and we will keep on representing it. What I always tell my players and my message to my players is that what makes us so unique is that we are playing for something different than just basketball," he added.

Despite falling short of a medal after group stage defeats by the United States and Serbia, the performance of the Bright Stars in Paris has brought immense pride to South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, and a neighbour to war-torn Sudan.

Many regard the 27-year-old American as the greatest gymnast that ever lived and if there ever were any doubts after she failed to win gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Biles’ performance at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics where she has already clinched 3 gold medals and a silver medal has silenced her critics, who raised eyebrows over her display in 2021.

However, before the historic American was scintillating the world with her acrobatics, a certain “Sparrow from Minsk” captured attention by winning 3 gold medals and a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Games competing for the Soviet Union aged just 17 years old.

Korbut, standing at 4 ft 11 is described on the Olympics website as the one who “ushered in an era of gymnastics dominated by young, lithe women.”

The Eastern European athlete became the standout of the Munich Games. After her breathtaking routine on the uneven parallel bars, Korbut recalled, "It was amazing. One day, I was a nobody, and the next day, I was a star."

Korbut is regarded as one of the female gymnasts who revolutionised the sport. She became the first gymnast to perform a back flip to catch on the uneven bars when she was 17. In her honour, the move has since become known as the Korbut Flip, a recognition of her impact on the sport. She was also the first to do a backward somersault on the beam.

Korbut managed two Olympic appearances during her time: the first being the 1972 Munich Olympics aged 17 and the final being the 1976 Montreal Olympics aged 21.

Despite her short-lived career where she retired in 1977 at the age of 22, the Belarusian gymnast won 4 Olympic gold medals.

She has since settled in the United States with her family mentoring a new generation of gymnasts as a coach after migrating in 1991 from Minsk to New Jersey, fearing the long-term health effects of the nearby Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in Ukraine.

Generally, from 1964 through to 1992, South Africa was banned from all the Olympic games held within that period due to its apartheid regime and racial segregation policies, which sought to discriminate against black South Africans.

1972 Munich Summer Olympics

Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was banned due to international pressure and protests against the country’s racial segregation policies.

2000 Sydney Summer Olympics

Afghanistan banned and could not present athletes due to the ruling Taliban’s stance on women.

2016 Rio Summer Olympics

Kuwait was also suspended by the IOC due to government interference in the country’s Olympic committee during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

North Korea was banned due to its decision to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, citing COVID-19 concerns, which violated the Olympic Charter.

2024 Paris Summer Olympics

Russia and Belarus were banned in January 2023 by the IOC due to Russia's war on Ukraine. The IOC declared “solidarity with Ukraine” and prohibited Russia and its ally Belarus from officially competing. However, individual athletes from these nations can participate on a restricted basis, with 15 Russian and 17 Belarusian athletes competing as neutral athletes.

The International Olympic Committee and World Triathlon, the sport’s governing body, announced on Tuesday that water quality tests conducted in the morning “revealed water quality levels that did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held.”

Olympic organisers are hopeful that the sunny weather and high temperatures will improve the Seine's water quality enough for triathletes to compete.

The men’s event had been rescheduled for Wednesday, to take place after the women's triathlon, which is also set for that day.

Earlier this month, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the Seine to prove the safety of the River. City authorities have announced plans to open three public swimming sites in the river by June next year.

However, rainfall often causes sewer systems to overflow into the Seine, significantly increasing concentrations of infection-causing bacteria like E. coli.

Kenyan athletes like Eliud Kipchoge, Peres Jepchirchir, Kelvin Kiptum, Brigid Kosgei, and Hellen Obiri have consistently upheld their legacy with astounding accomplishments . Hellen Obiri once again brought pride to Kenya on April 15 by clinching victory in the women's category of the Boston Marathon for the second consecutive year. Additionally, defending Olympic champions Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir further elevated the nation's reputation by triumphing in the Kenya London Marathon Double on April 21, honouring the memory of the late marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum.

Hellen's victory came as no surprise due to the positive notion about Kenyans on the track, however, it is worth celebrating. Obiri completed the race in 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 37 seconds, securing her second back-to-back victory in the capital of Massachusetts following her debut marathon triumph in the same city in 2023. Sharon Lokedi, also from Kenya, finished second, just eight seconds behind Obiri.

Isn't there a compelling reason why Kenyans are renowned as the premier long-distance runners? Numerous individuals contribute to this accolade bestowed upon the nation. Let's delve further into the notable figures who have elevated the Kenyan flag in marathons.

He was also the first Kenyan to win the New York City Marathon in 1987, showcasing his versatility and dominance in the sport.

Samuel Wanjiru

This victory also made him the youngest gold medalist in the marathon since 1932. He had previously set records like the world junior record in the 10,000 meters in 2005 and broke the half marathon world record thrice. He tragically fell from the balcony of his home in 2011.

Catherine Ndereba

Catherine Ndereba, also known as "Catherine the Great," is a retired Kenyan marathon runner who has significantly impacted the sport. Ndereba has been a formidable force in marathon running, with a career that includes numerous victories and records. She won the marathon at the World Championships in Athletics twice.
Jemima Jelagat Sumgong

Jemima Jelagat Sumgong won the marathon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic marathon. She has won the London, Rotterdam, and Las Vegas Marathons . Sumgong also finished as the runner-up at the Boston, Chicago, and New York City Marathon in her active days. Sumgong's career faced a setback due to a doping case. She is currently serving an eight-year ban from athletic competitions, which will last until 2027, after testing positive for the banned substance EPO.

Kelvin Kiptum

Kelvin Kiptum was a Kenyan long-distance runner who impacted the marathon world with record-breaking performances. He held the marathon world record with 2:00:35, set at the Chicago Marathon in October 2023. Kiptum won all three marathons he participated in, including two World Marathon Majors. He made a stunning debut at the Valencia Marathon in 2022, running the then fourth-fastest time ever At the London Marathon in April 2023, he ran the second-fastest marathon in history at that time. Tragically, Kelvin Kiptum's life was cut short at the age of 24 in a road accident on February 11, 2024

The retired athlete, Elias Kiptum Maindi was sentenced to one and a half years while Paul Kibet Simbolei was sentenced to a year in jail.

The accused persons were sentenced for fabricating documents that suggest that doping activities were being promoted by several state agencies in the country and sharing the information with foreign media .

According to The Nation , the allegations were intended to have Kenyan athletes including multiple world champions Vivian Cheruiyot, Hellen Obiri, Eunice Jepkoech Sum, Juan Pedro, Amos Kipruto, Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, and Beatrice Chepkoech suspended from participating in the Olympic Games and to tarnish the country’s image in the athletics world.

Kiptum is also said to have written a letter addressed to an athlete Joyce Chepkirui’s manager Gianni Demadonna informing him that Chepkurui had tested positive for Norandrosterone, a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Chepkirui previously participated in 42-kilometre marathons in New York and Boston and has since been banned over the fabricated doping allegations against her.

Maindi and Simbolei are said to have committed the said offences between September 16, 2019, and April 18, 2020.
