Activists from the Justicialist Party filled the streets, chanting and cheering as Fernández appeared briefly on her balcony to wave and applaud them. Many held banners and repeated calls for her freedom, framing her confinement as part of a wider political struggle.

“She gave dignity to the people ”, said Raul Atronito, one of the demonstrators, recalling that his father only received a pension during Fernández’s presidency. Another supporter, Vanesa Queyffer, argued that her release was vital to “reverse the disastrous political moment our country is going through”.

Fernández is serving a six-year house arrest sentence after Argentina’s Supreme Court upheld her conviction for fraudulent administration linked to public works contracts. The ruling also bars her permanently from holding office. Her detention has become a rallying point for the opposition, intensifying tensions ahead of the October 26 congressional elections , where President Javier Milei’s government faces a key test in both chambers of Congress.

“She was arrested for serious acts, including her recent public appearance inciting the military to rebellion,” a police source told AFP. Local media reported that security forces detained Gnakadé at her home in the capital, Lomé.

The arrest comes amid weeks of protests that have shaken the West African nation. Demonstrators have called for Gnassingbé, in power since 2005 after succeeding his father’s 38-year rule, to step down. Anger intensified earlier this year after a controversial constitutional change allowed Gnassingbé to transition into a new role as President of the Council of Ministers — the most powerful office in the executive branch, with no term limits.

Gnakadé, widow of the president’s late elder brother Ernest Gnassingbé, served as defence minister between 2020 and 2022, one of the first women to hold the post. In recent months, she had published scathing articles urging the president to resign in favour of what she called a “peaceful, inclusive, and national transition.” Her outspoken stance marked a rare public break within the ruling family.

News of her detention quickly went viral on social media, with opposition parties and civil society groups denouncing what they described as a politically motivated crackdown. The coalition Touche Pas A Ma Constitution (“Don’t Touch My Constitution”) accused security forces of arresting her without a warrant. “Once again, this is an abuse of power that characterises the regime’s retrograde practices. The aim is to silence a dissenting voice,” the group said in a statement, demanding her unconditional release.

A youth-led movement known as M66 also issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the authorities, threatening nationwide demonstrations if Gnakadé is not freed.

Judiciary sources said she is being questioned over alleged ties to exiled opposition figures and claims she sought to incite disobedience within the armed forces. If convicted, she could face between 10 and 20 years in prison.

In June, civil rights groups reported at least seven deaths during a crackdown on anti-government protests, with bodies recovered from rivers in Lomé. The government denied the fatalities were linked to demonstrations.

The coming days are expected to bring clarity on the charges against Gnakadé, but her arrest has already deepened tensions in a country grappling with protests, political repression, and anger at a regime that has ruled for nearly 60 years.

Barbadillo: Inside the prison that holds Peru’s fallen Presidents

Barbadillo was not originally built to house a string of ex-heads of state. Managed by Peru’s National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), it was intended as a secure facility with capacity for a handful of inmates. Over time, however, it evolved into the detention site for presidents accused or convicted of corruption, abuse of power, or even attempted coups.

Who’s behind bars?

In recent years, Barbadillo has housed four former presidents in all. Alberto Fujimori (president 1990–2000) was its first occupant. Extradited from Chile, Fujimori was convicted in 2009 of authorising death-squad killings and other abuses and sentenced to 25 years. He then spent 16 years at Barbadillo. As he aged and fell ill, critics fought his 2017 pardon, but a 2023 court ultimately ordered his release on humanitarian grounds. On December 7, 2023, Barbadillo’s gates opened for Fujimori – now 85 – when Peru’s highest court restored his pardon.

Ollanta Humala (2011–2016) was also jailed at Barbadillo, but only briefly. In 2017, Peru built the facility for Fujimori, then transferred Humala there under guard when he faced a money-laundering probe tied to Odebrecht. Humala’s cell was kept separate from Fujimori’s, but both had similar quarters – a bedroom, office and a courtyard for gardening. (Humala and his wife were later freed on appeal.) Martín Vizcarra (2018–2020) spent just 22 days in Barbadillo in 2022 under pre-trial detention on graft allegations as a regional governor before a court ordered his release.

Pedro Castillo was whisked to Barbadillo immediately after his dramatic ouster and arrest in December 2022. Castillo, a former schoolteacher, had declared a self-coup attempt by announcing the dissolution of Congress, triggering his impeachment on charges of “rebellion and conspiracy”. He has been held on a preventive detention order – initially seven days, later extended to 36 months – while facing a trial for these charges. (He also faces separate graft investigations from his time in office.)

Alejandro Toledo arrived at Barbadillo in April 2023 after a lengthy extradition from the U.S. Reuters reports note he was ordered to serve 18 months of pre-trial detention in the Lima police base. Toledo is accused of taking up to $35 million in bribes from Brazil’s Odebrecht for public works (Interoceanica Sur highway). He has denied wrongdoing, but in October 2024, a court convicted him of accepting bribes and sentenced him to 20.5 years, and in September 2025, a second conviction (money laundering) added 13 years. He is now formally serving those terms concurrently in Barbadillo’s Lima police-base prison .

What life inside looks like

Compared to overcrowded Peruvian prisons, Barbadillo offers relatively privileged conditions: a small number of cells, personal bathrooms, study areas, and even garden access. While these amenities have raised debates about whether ex-presidents are being treated too leniently, the facility remains far from luxurious.

Built originally for former President Alberto Fujimori upon his 2007 extradition, Barbadillo sits inside a fenced special-operations police base, and its official capacity is only two (later expanded to three) inmates

In practice , it has become Peru’s “presidential prison,” quietly holding a parade of ex-leaders. Despite its upgraded quarters, Barbadillo is not gilded: authorities stress it has no secret luxuries, only slightly roomier cells than the country’s overcrowded jails.

Each bedroom in Barbadillo is roughly 4×4 meters and comes with basic furniture, including a bed, a couch, and a table, but no bars on the windows.

Wilfredo Pedraza, former head of Peru’s National Penitentiary Institute and now Ollanta Humala’s lawyer, described Barbadillo as “a prison without the usual barred windows.”

For many Peruvians, Barbadillo is both a symbol of justice catching up with corrupt leaders and a reminder of the country’s ongoing governance crisis.

The 47-year-old, identified only by his surname Meng, was detained in Zaoyang on Thursday for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a common criminal charge in China.

According to Xiangyang’s cyber police, Meng made “slanderous and derogatory remarks” on social media about the event, provoking anger online.

Police said his comments “insulted them and spread rumours, provoking strong anger among netizens,” but did not specify what he had written.

They added that his remarks had “hurt people’s patriotic sentiments and caused severe negative social impact”.

“The great spirit of the war of resistance serves as the spiritual backbone of our nation,” Xiangyang cyber police said, referring to China’s fight against Japanese forces during the Second World War.

“Any attempts to distort or smear the history, defame military personnel taking part in commemorating events or harm patriotic sentiments will be severely punished by public security authorities.”

Trump calls parade with Kim, Putin a ‘conspiracy’

The parade marked the anniversaries of the Second World War and the Second Sino-Japanese War. It was China’s largest military display in decades, lasting 70 minutes, and featured advanced weapons, tanks, missiles, fighter jets and domestically-built aircraft.

Leaders from 26 countries attended, with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un joining President Xi Jinping on Tiananmen Gate as guests of honour.

Other attendees included Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Absent from the ceremony were leaders from the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Poland and the Czech Republic. Poland and the Czech Republic, who attended in 2015, were replaced this year by Serbia and Slovakia.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticised the event, accusing Xi, Putin and Kim of conspiring against Washington.

“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you conspire against the United States of America ,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He also pointed to American sacrifices in the war: “Many Americans died in China’s quest for Victory and Glory. I hope that they are rightfully Honoured and Remembered for their Bravery and Sacrifice!”

Despite his criticism of the parade, Trump dismissed concerns that closer ties between China, Russia and North Korea could threaten Washington, saying they would not form a coalition against the U.S. because “China needs us.”

According to Puji Lestari from BRIN, Indonesians are adopting Spirulina spp. as an effective low-cost feed supplement for livestock, improving the nutrition and growth of animals. Spirulina is nutrient-rich and resilient, thriving in extreme environments while helping combat climate change. Researchers note that supplementing Spirulina at just 1% of an animal's body weight can significantly enhance livestock productivity.

Accelerated rollout of free meals programme in Indonesia

In a recent virtual meeting, Indonesia’s leaders, led by Karnavian, were urged to expedite the rollout of the MBG programme, aimed at improving child nutrition and creating jobs.

This comes as the country intensifies efforts to crack down on online crime.

The arrests were part of a sweeping operation launched after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet warned security forces and the military to act swiftly against cybercriminal networks or risk losing their jobs.

Between June 14 and 15, police raided two buildings in the capital, Phnom Penh, arresting 149 Vietnamese nationals, three Chinese citizens, and 85 Cambodians.

In a separate operation in Sihanoukville, a coastal city known as a hotspot for scam centres, officers detained another 63 Vietnamese and seized over 50 computers.

The raids come amid growing concerns over Southeast Asia’s role in the global scam industry. The United Nations has described the region as "ground zero" for internet scam operations, which are estimated to defraud social media users of up to US$40 billion a year.

Many of the workers in these centres are believed to be victims themselves, trafficked or tricked into taking the jobs under false promises.

Human rights groups say they are often held against their will, forced to work long hours and denied basic freedoms.

The Prime Minister’s directive, released publicly this week, made clear that any officer failing to take action would face dismissal.

Cambodia has previously deported foreign nationals caught in similar operations.

In March, the government sent home 119 Thais who were among 230 people arrested during cyber scam raids near the Thai border.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime warned earlier this year that the scam industry is no longer limited to Southeast Asia .

It said organised criminal groups have started building similar operations in other parts of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, South America, and some Pacific islands .

US sanctions key Cuban officials

The US government has imposed sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and other top officials, marking the anniversary of the July 2021 protests. According to the US Department of State, the sanctions include visa restrictions for officials associated with the regime's violent response to the protests, which resulted in widespread detentions and abuses. The US continues to advocate for human rights in Cuba and prohibits funding to properties linked to the regime.

Human rights abuses identified in Cuban prisons

Human Rights Watch reports significant abuses against protesters detained following the July 2021 demonstrations in Cuba. The organisation highlights arbitrary arrests and deplorable prison conditions, including overcrowding and lack of medical care. Former detainees have reported brutal treatment and punitive measures against those who complained. HRW calls for international support for human rights promotion in Cuba amidst an ongoing economic crisis.

Cuban national arrested for driving offence

Yordano Herrera, a 34-year-old native of Cuba, was arrested for driving with a suspended licence, following a DUI conviction. Law enforcement officials in Sumter County discovered his vehicle registration was expired, leading to a check of his driving history, which revealed multiple suspensions. He was charged with expired registration and driving on a suspended licence. Herrera was later released on bail after his arrest.

OFAC fines U.S. firm $600,000 for Cuba shipments

Key Holding, LLC, a Delaware-based logistics firm, will pay a $608,825 fine to the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC for potential violations of Cuba sanctions . Between Jan 2022 and Jul 2023, its Colombian subsidiary coordinated 36 shipments to Cuba worth over $3 million. OFAC found 33 shipments unauthorised under its rules, including food, machinery parts, and goods bound for Cuban state-owned entities. At the time, neither Key Holding nor its subsidiary had an OFAC compliance program in place, leading to unintentional breaches of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations.

Kenyan blogger Albert Ojwang's death was caused by blunt force trauma , which means he was struck on the head, pathologists have revealed.

"The head, the whole head, was full of blood, the whole head. On top of the head, normally we call it the scalp, it was full of blood. And then when we checked inside that blood, it went inside his brain. So the cause of death of Albert is because of a head injury caused by blunt trauma, and he had signs of neck compression," Geoffrey Mutuma, a pathologist, said.

This revelation defeats the police report, which states that the deceased died from repeatedly hitting his head against the wall of the police cell.

"While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall," a police statement said. "He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival."

Ojwang was arrested on Friday, June 6, in Homa Bay, a town in western Kenya.

He was detained in connection with a post on X that was allegedly critical of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

He was later transferred to Nairobi on Sunday, June 8, where the police claim he was found unconscious from self-inflicted injuries.

Ojwang's death sparked public outcry as activists and protesters swarmed Nairobi to demonstrate for justice.

To 'salvage' the situation, the country's police chief, Douglas Kanja, on Monday, June 9, suspended the station head and all police officers who were on duty the day Ojwang died for independent investigations.

Colombian politician shot at rally

South Florida lawmakers condemned the shooting of Colombian senator Miguel Uribe Turbay at a campaign rally in Bogota. The 39-year-old politician, who is in critical condition after surgery, was attacked on Saturday, raising concerns about political violence in Colombia. Senator Uribe, associated with a prominent political family, is a candidate for the upcoming presidential election in May 2026. Statements from U.S. representatives highlighted the incident as a threat to democracy, calling for accountability and an end to inflammatory government rhetoric.

Miracle needed for shot Candidate's survival

Miguel Uribe Turbay's health remains critical following a shooting incident at a campaign rally, with doctors stating he requires a 'miracle' for recovery. The 39-year-old senator, who was shot twice, underwent surgery but has shown little response to treatment. A 15-year-old suspect has been arrested, with police revealing the weapon used was legally purchased. Uribe is the grandson of a former president and has a history of advocacy against violence, making this attack particularly significant against the backdrop of Colombia's political landscape.

South Florida man arrested for drug trafficking

Chip Ervin, 46, was arrested at Miami International Airport after arriving from Colombia with nearly 3,000 hydrocodone pills in his baggage. The man was apprehended during a secondary inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Ervin, who claimed to be in Colombia for dental work, now faces serious drug trafficking charges following the discovery of the controlled substances in his luggage.

Mompox, rich in colonial history without the presence of major commercial chains, provides a serene setting where visitors can enjoy riverfront views and local gastronomy. This less-explored destination appeals to those seeking an authentic cultural experience away from commercialisation, capturing the essence of Colombia's heritage.

Nicaragua arrests ex-mayors and ex-military in Ortega’s latest crackdown

Between 15 and 20 people—including former mayors and military officers—were arrested over the weekend in northern Nicaragua in what opposition groups call politically motivated raids. Among the detained are ex-mayors from the banned Citizens for Liberty party and a former military intelligence chief. The arrests follow a pattern of repression by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo since the 2018 protests, which left over 300 dead. Opposition media and exile outlets linked the raids to the recent detention of retired General Álvaro Baltodano, a former Ortega ally.

Legislature votes to end dual citizenship

Nicaragua’s National Assembly approved a constitutional amendment Friday to ban dual citizenship, potentially affecting thousands, including government critics. The reform, which must pass again in 2026 to take effect, was unanimously backed by the Sandinista-controlled legislature. Under the proposal, Nicaraguans who acquire another nationality would lose their citizenship, while most foreigners seeking Nicaraguan citizenship must renounce theirs, except Central Americans. The move follows the Ortega regime’s revocation of citizenship for over 400 people, including 222 deported to the U.S. in 2023.

$50b Panama Canal replacement

Elon Musk is reportedly backing a $50 billion canal project in Nicaragua aimed at creating a high-tech alternative to the Panama Canal. The proposed waterway, supported by a global investor consortium, reflects Musk’s push for futuristic infrastructure to ease global trade. Why rethink the Panama Canal? Despite its historic role since 1914, the canal struggles with congestion and can't accommodate the largest modern ships, even after expansions. Musk's vision: a more efficient, scalable route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The forum also explored co-production models, infrastructure, and technological advancements, reinforcing the role of creative industries in economic growth.

Journalist abducted by Somali police

The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) is deeply concerned about the abduction of journalist Ibrahim Mohamed Mayow, who was kidnapped on Monday, March 24, in Afgooye, about 30km from Mogadishu, while reporting on an Al-Shabaab attack. According to Horn Observer , Mayow, a reporter for Dalsan TV, was allegedly summoned by armed officers linked to Banadir Regional Police Commissioner Mahdi Omar Muumin (aka Moalim Mahdi) after the outlet published footage of the mortar strike's aftermath. He disappeared shortly after, and his location remains unknown. Local journalists say Moalim Mahdi, a former Al-Shabaab defector now serving as Mogadishu’s police chief, was in Afgooye during the attack. Police in Afgooye denied holding Mayow or knowing about his arrest.

Somalia government repatriates 145 citizens from Libya

On Monday, March 24, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs repatriated 145 citizens from Tripoli and Sebha, Libya, to Mogadishu and Hargeisa. The operation, carried out with support from the IOM and the EU’s Migrant Protection and Reintegration program, focused on youth who had been stranded and subjected to abuse and trafficking in Libya. As reported by the Jurist , this effort is part of Somalia’s ongoing commitment to tackling migration challenges. The EU-IOM Joint Initiative facilitated the repatriation, which supports voluntary return and reintegration for migrants in North Africa, helping them rebuild their lives back home.

Somalia launches first national instant payment system

Somalia has launched its first Instant Payment System with QR support through the Somalia Payment Switch (SPS), powered by BPC’s SmartVista platform. Led by the Central Bank of Somalia, TechAfrica News reports that the move aims to modernise the country’s payment infrastructure, boost financial inclusion, and reduce reliance on cash. Despite recent growth in the financial sector, many Somalis remain unbanked. The new system, featuring the SOMQR standard and managed by SPS, seeks to enable secure, fast, and interoperable digital payments nationwide.

Somalia joins Afreximbank to boost intra-African trade, economic growth

Somalia has officially joined the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) as its 53rd member, aiming to boost intra-African trade and economic growth. By acceding to the bank’s establishment agreement, Somalia gains access to financial resources for infrastructure, trade, and capacity building. State Minister Hirsi Jama Ganni called the move a commitment to advancing regional and continental development through trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area, The Star reports.

What it’s like to be a TB patient in Somalia

As the medical coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Somalia, I witness daily how conflict and poverty harm lives. One major challenge is tuberculosis (TB), especially in children. At Mudug Regional Hospital, I met 5-year-old Ahmed, who showed classic TB symptoms—cough, fever, and weight loss. With 246 TB cases per 100,000 people and 68 deaths per 100,000, Somalia faces a high burden. Diagnosing TB in children is tough, as they often can’t provide sputum samples. In our low-resource setting, we rely on clinical exams, X-rays, and skin tests because waiting for ideal conditions, Reliefweb reports.

Zimbabwe journalist still in custody after case adjourned

A High Court judge in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, March 12 adjourned the case of journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has been in custody since Feb. 24 over alleged incitement linked to interviews with a war veteran-turned-politician critical of the president. According to VOA , Mhlanga’s lawyers requested bail, but Justice Gibson Mandaza said more time was needed to review the case. His lawyer, Chris Mhike, said they await the court's next move, adding it would be “improper” to comment while proceedings are ongoing.

Hanke ranks Zimbabwe’s ZIG second worst in the world

Renowned economist Steve Hanke has ranked Zimbabwe’s ZiG currency as the second worst after Venezuela’s Bolivar. His analysis shows the ZiG lost 50% of its value against the US dollar over the past 10 months, largely due to inflation and lack of public trust. As reported by the New Zimbabwe , Though initially pegged at US$1: ZiG2.50, it now trades between ZiG33 and ZiG40 on the black market, far from the official US$1: ZiG26 rate. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe insists the currency remains viable, despite limited use in key sectors like fuel and passport payments.

Thousands jobless as Trump cuts $522 million aid to Zimbabwe

Thousands of Zimbabwean NGO and civil society workers have lost their jobs after major U.S. funding cuts under the Trump administration. Key sectors affected include HIV programmes, the arts, and humanitarian aid. The U.S. slashed 83% of USAID’s global budget, ending around 5,200 projects. In Zimbabwe alone, $388 million in ongoing USAID-funded initiatives have been abruptly halted, excluding indirect support from agencies like the World Food Programme, Zimeye reports.

Zimbabwe supply chain compromised by coerced cross-border drivers

Zimbabwean authorities are cracking down on truck drivers coerced by smugglers to transport contraband inland, putting transporters at risk of being penalized for carrying illegal goods. Freight News reports Mike Fitzmaurice of the Transit Assistance Bureau said smuggling often occurs at border points like Beitbridge, where drivers are bribed, and goods are sometimes brought in by people crossing the river on foot. He noted that while buses were once used for smuggling, authorities have since tightened controls.

Zimbabwe records 49 human-crocodile conflicts in two months, 9 killed, 11 injured

At least nine people have died and 11 others were injured in a surge of crocodile attacks over the past two months, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). The agency also reported the loss of 44 cattle and 60 goats in 49 cases of human-crocodile conflict. ZimParks has urged communities to stay vigilant near water bodies, especially during the rainy season, reports the New Zimbabwe .

In Kano, a state where Islamic law is enforced, officials say fasting is mandatory for Muslims from dawn to sunset.

The Hisbah, or Islamic police, said 20 people were detained for eating and drinking in public, while five others were arrested for selling food during fasting hours. Officials say the crackdown will continue throughout the holy month.

Mujahid Aminudeen, a senior officer of the Hisbah, said the arrests were necessary to uphold respect for Ramadan.

“It’s heartbreaking that in such a holy month meant for fasting, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly. We won’t condone that, and that’s why we went out to make arrests,” he was quoted by Newscentral .

The arrested individuals were taken to a Sharia court, where they could face punishment.

Last year, those caught were released after promising to observe the fast. But this year, authorities are taking a stricter approach by ensuring offenders face legal action.

Aminudeen said that many arrests happen after tip-offs from the public.

“We do get calls from people who are enraged after seeing people eating in public, and we act fast by going to the area to make arrests,” he explained .

Kano is one of 12 northern Nigerian states that enforce Sharia law alongside the country’s secular legal system. The law applies to Muslims but does not affect Christians living in these areas.

The Hisbah is also known for arresting people for reasons beyond Ramadan, such as wearing certain hairstyles, dressing in shorts, or allowing men and women to sit together in public transport.

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam. Muslims believe it was when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, meaning it is a core religious duty.

This year’s Ramadan will last 29 or 30 days, ending on March 30. Authorities in Kano say they will continue to monitor and arrest Muslims who break the fast in public.

China committed to supporting Venezuela

In recent developments, China has reiterated its commitment to supporting Venezuela's sovereignty and its economic development. During a meeting at the UN Summit of the Future, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed the significance of the solid strategic partnership between the two nations while applauding the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, Bastille Post reported. This partnership is seen as crucial in advancing mutual interests between China and Venezuela as they navigate through current global challenges.

Maduro on wanted list

The atmosphere surrounding the Venezuelan government has darkened, as an Argentine court has placed President Nicolás Maduro on Interpol's international wanted list due to accusations of human rights violations. This ruling came on the heels of a complaint lodged by the NGO "Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy", which cited Maduro's alleged crimes against humanity. According to Top Buzz Times , the court's claim of universal jurisdiction raises significant implications, particularly regarding the potential extradition of Maduro and his Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. Moreover, Argentina continues to back a complaint against Maduro at the International Criminal Court, which was initially filed in 2017 during Venezuela's violent protests.

New financial system

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, while addressing the UN summit, underscored the urgent need for reform within the international financial system. He argued that existing structures foster dependency and domination, calling for a cessation of unilateral sanctions to encourage global development. Gil advocated for a balanced approach to peace, human rights, and development, asserting that development should be a central tenet in international discourses aimed at improvement and prosperity, Social News XYZ reported

Allegations against former opposition candidate

On another front, Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez has made serious allegations against former opposition candidate Edmundo González, accusing him of breaching exile agreements after being spotted at social gatherings in Spain with political leaders. According to Top Buzz Times , Rodriguez insinuated that González's actions were orchestrated to undermine the Venezuelan government, linking them to an internal rift within the opposition. Notably, González had signed a document recognising Maduro's victory, claiming this was done under duress, prompting Maduro to urge González to confront his moral failings.

Spain faces allegation of aiding Maduro

The Spanish government faces accusations of complicity in aiding Maduro's regime by permitting intimidation tactics against González. After fleeing to the Spanish embassy in Caracas in the wake of the election, González alleged that Maduro's operatives coerced him into signing a document that compromised the integrity of the electoral process. While Spain has denied these allegations of intimidation, WLRN reports that scrutiny remains high as Venezuelan opposition factions urge the U.S. to revoke oil company licenses as leverage against Maduro's government.

Concerns about his health and well-being have been raised by supporters and rights groups, who claim his detention violates international law, the AFP reports.

Coordinator of the Committee for the Release of Jorge Glas, Sacha Llorenti expressed deep concern over Glas’s condition.

"We have already sent several notes expressing our concern and unease about Jorge Glas’s health, including to the United Nations system, such as the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, in addition to a series of awareness actions about what is happening with Jorge Glas," Llorenti said.

Llorenti further stated that the responsibility for Glas’s safety lies with Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa. "President Noboa is responsible for the ongoing violation of international law and for Glas’s current condition in prison."

Supporters of Glas argue that his detention is politically motivated and violates international legal standards.

Suppressing dissent

The Nicaraguan government is undertaking an extensive campaign to suppress dissent by revoking the legal status of 1,500 nonprofit organisations, primarily targeting evangelical churches that do not align with the authoritarian regime. This move forms part of a broader strategy to control civil society and eliminate opposition, AAS reports.

VP Rosario Murillo supports RT amid US sanctions

Vice President Rosario Murillo voiced her support for Margarita Simonyan of RT following the US sanctions imposed on prominent Russian media figures, accusing them of orchestrating a disinformation campaign that aims to impact the upcoming US elections. According to Intellinews , in her communication, Murillo reframed these sanctions as an acknowledgement of their work in promoting “Justice, Truth, Peace, and Love,” thereby attempting to portray the punitive measures as politically motivated rather than justified. Despite facing bans in other regions, RT has expanded its influence within Latin America, forming strategic partnerships with nations like Nicaragua. However, this growth occurs amidst escalating repression of independent journalism, resulting in the flight of many Nicaraguan journalists, which further strengthens the Ortega regime's grip over media representation.

Dissolution of Episcopal Diocese of Nicaragua

In a continuation of the regime's crackdown on religious institutions, the Nicaraguan government announced the dissolution of the Episcopal Diocese of Nicaragua along with the confiscation of its assets. This announcement follows the cancellation of legal status for over 5,500 civil society organisations since 2018, including numerous religious entities. The Episcopal Diocese, established in 1742, has historically provided educational and social support services. The repressive actions have drawn criticism from various organisations, notably Christian Solidarity Worldwide, which highlights concerns regarding the ramifications for community services and religious freedoms, reports Anglican Ink .

135 political prisoners released

The plight of 135 Nicaraguans, exiled to Guatemala after enduring brutal incarceration under the Ortega-Murillo rule, illustrates the regime's oppressive practices. Former prisoners recounted experiences of both physical and psychological torture, substandard living conditions, and threats directed at their families. Notably, Jose Enrique Sanchez detailed his 17-month ordeal in La Modelo prison, characterised by violence and intimidation, while others, such as Jared Ramirez and Oscar Parrilla, corroborated stories of severe mistreatment and mental strain during their captivity. Exiled individuals like Adriana Zapata and Isaias Ruiz reflected on the ongoing effects of their traumatic experiences and the lack of basic rights during detention while expressing understandable concerns for the safety of their loved ones remaining in Nicaragua. The narrative highlights not only the immediate consequences of state violence but also the enduring psychological toll on those who escape its grasp as reported by Confidencial .

New foreign minister

In a significant political reshuffle, Valdrack Jaentschke has been appointed as Nicaragua's new Foreign Minister, taking over from Denis Moncada, who is vacating the position due to health issues but will continue to serve as a presidential advisor on international affairs. Havana Times reports that Jaentschke's previous experience includes key diplomatic roles, thus continuing the pattern of loyalty within the Ortega administration, as this marks the third recent change in the position since 2007.

The warrant comes after Gonzalez Urrutia claimed victory in the July elections, which were officially awarded to incumbent President Nicolás Maduro. According to the prosecutor's office, the warrant is for "serious crimes," including charges related to the opposition's allegations of election fraud.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner of a third six-year term. This decision has been disputed by the opposition and several international actors, including the United States and the European Union, who have demanded detailed election results.

The CNE has stated that hackers corrupted the data, preventing the release of results, although there is scepticism about this claim, AFP reported.

Gonzalez Urrutia, a retired diplomat who replaced María Corina Machado as the opposition candidate, has been in hiding since the election. Maduro has called for both Gonzalez Urrutia and Machado's imprisonment. Machado, who was barred from running on charges many see as fabricated, has been leading protests against Maduro while also staying out of sight.

This legal action may lead other tech executives to reconsider their European engagements.

Durov, originally from Russia, is charged with failing to prevent the spread of illegal content on Telegram, including illicit transactions and child exploitation images. The platform, which has more than 900 million users, is at the centre of this case.

French legal experts have noted that it is unusual for an individual to be held criminally responsible for the actions of users on a tech platform.

"In the context of the implementation of this text, the Digital Services Act must really serve as a wake-up call for technology companies providing this type of service, so that they really understand that from now on, there will be less and less tolerance for illegal activities and illegal content online." Florence G'sell, visiting professor at Stanford told AFP.

"The arrest of Pavel Durov has certainly come as a surprise, but it's important to note that law enforcement agencies have been closely monitoring Telegram for some time. The platform has been under scrutiny due to allegations of its use by terrorist organisations, drug traffickers, and extremist groups," Streeter explained.

She highlighted the growing global concern among regulators about the role of social media platforms in facilitating the activities of extremist groups. "There has been heightened concern among regulators worldwide about the use of social networks by extremist groups, and that's why Telegram has been under the spotlight. However, it's not the first platform to face such scrutiny over the spread of extremist content."

Streeter noted that while the arrest of Durov is an unexpected international development, it also emphasises the increasing pressure on social media giants to address the misuse of their platforms.

"The arrest of the CEO is certainly a big and unexpected move, signalling the seriousness with which authorities are now addressing these issues," she added.

The Russian-born billionaire and founder of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday evening. He was taken into custody shortly after landing on a private jet.

Stock market diversities

Zimbabwe will introduce commodities trading on its dollar-based Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX) in the final quarter of 2024. This initiative aims to leverage the country's natural resources, including gold, diamonds, lithium, platinum, and coal. According to African Markets , the new trading will follow recently published guidelines requiring all activities to be licensed. These regulations, released by the government on Friday, outline the framework for mineral commodities trading on VFEX, managed by the Harare-based Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE).

Ban on alluvial and riverbed mining

The Zimbabwean government has renewed its ban on alluvial and riverbed mining to curb environmental degradation. Initially announced in 2020, the ban has had little effect. Minister Jenfan Muswere highlighted that large-scale alluvial mining has caused water pollution, siltation, and ecosystem disruption. Mining Zimbabwe reports that rivers like Nyagadzi, Mazowe, Munyati, Insiza, Save, Mutare, and Angwa have been severely affected, reports The Zimbabwean .

Opposition political activists denied bail

Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume and his alleged accomplice Kelvin Gonde have been denied bail by Harare magistrate Farai Gwitima. They are accused of disorderly conduct and participating in an unlawful gathering. The State claims they were among CCC activists arrested in June at an unsanctioned meeting. Gwitima stated that the prosecution had valid reasons for their continued detention awaiting trial. “It is critical to mention that a bail court can only deny bail where compelling reasons have been shown. While it is appreciated from the evidence before the court that the two are of fixed abode with no previous convictions, it is this court’s view that there is reasonable suspicion that calls for the continued detention of the accused pending trial," the magistrate rues as reported by New Zimbabwe .

$200,000 invested in a cultural village

A diaspora businessman, Takudzva Mutepfa, has invested over US$200,000 to establish the Lanyula Cultural Village in Hwange, Zimbabwe, aimed at promoting rural tourism. The project, which started seven years ago, is nearly complete and will feature six chalets, a sky-view lodge, and a campsite, all designed to showcase the diverse cultures of Zimbabwe. Located near Hwange National Park, it seeks to create job opportunities and improve local livelihoods while aligning with the government's rural industrialisation agenda. As reported by the Chronicle , government officials, including President Mnangagwa’s representatives, have recognized the project's significance in fostering community tourism and cultural integration. Mutepfa emphasized the goal of sustainable rural tourism, utilising local resources and promoting traditional cuisine.

SADC saves $330 million

Zimbabwe's recent infrastructure development initiatives, particularly the upgrade of the Beitbridge border post, have saved the Southern African Development Community (SADC) over US$330 million in costs related to trade delays. President Mnangagwa has prioritised infrastructure as a central aspect of Zimbabwe's growth strategy, enhancing the country’s role as a regional trading hub. The improvements have streamlined trade and travel along the North-South Corridor and bolstered revenue flow into the national treasury. Despite facing sanctions, Zimbabwe has made significant strides in upgrading its infrastructure using local resources and public-private partnerships, reports the Chronicle .

The breakout occurred at a Nairobi police station on August 12, where Jumaisi was held alongside 12 undocumented Eritrean migrants, according to police authorities.

The escape was discovered during a routine check at around 5:00 AM (02:00 GMT) when officers arrived to serve breakfast to the detainees. “On opening the cell door, they found that 13 prisoners had escaped by cutting the wire mesh in the basking bay,” the police said in a statement, referring to the area where detainees get access to fresh air, as reported by Al Jazeera .

Jumaisi, 33, described by authorities as a "vampire, a psychopath," was initially arrested on July 15 after the discovery of mutilated bodies in a garbage dump within a Nairobi slum.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the killings of 42 women since 2022, including his wife. Police investigations are now underway to recapture the fugitive and return him to custody, AFP reported.

Central Bank Governor suspended

Liberian President Joseph Boakai has suspended the Central Bank Governor and appointed an acting successor following a compliance audit implicating several former officials in financial impropriety. The government has made several arrests and launched an audit of the previous administration, causing tension. Former officials have described the audit as a witch-hunt. President Boakai has also reactivated the government's Economic Management Team to ensure coordination of fiscal and monetary policy and propose solutions to tackle economic uncertainties. According to AllAfrica , the suspended Governor holds a tenured position but may be removed based on cause. The former president has accused the government of weaponising the judiciary to target his officials, while the government maintains it has sufficient evidence to prove its charges against the accused persons.

Police on manhunt for wife killer

Police in Nimba County are searching for a man who shot and killed his wife in the town of Gbapa. The motive for the murder is unknown. In a similar incident, a man from Mali killed his Liberian girlfriend in Guinea. He is awaiting trial in Guinea, Daily Observer reports .

Weah's allies released on bail

Three former officials of the George Weah Government in Liberia were released on bail after being imprisoned on charges of economic sabotage and theft. They were granted bail by a Resident Circuit Court Judge after intervention from their lawyers. Two of the defendants are still missing since the arrest warrant was issued. The FrontPageAfrica reports that the defendants obtained a criminal insurance bond worth $12 million from an insurance company in Monrovia. There were reported threats against judges by the Legal Advisor to President Joseph Nyumah Boakai regarding the release of the former officials.

Arrests

Former Liberian finance minister Samuel Tweah and four other officials have been arrested for defrauding the government. George Weah has vowed to resist any attempts to indict them, claiming it's a political move by the current administration. Former president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf emphasized the importance of due process. The government denies accusations of witch-hunting and promises a fair audit of corruption, according to The Africa Report . President Boakai's suspension of the Central Bank governor is criticized as a violation of the rule of law. Independent analysts support the arrests and call for accountability to address the culture of impunity.

Pest infestations cause havoc

Pest infestations are threatening agricultural livelihoods in Kpaymue, Liberia. Farmers are experiencing crop losses and struggling to support their families. The infestations are attributed to climate change and lack of knowledge about pest management practices. The New Dawn Liberia reports that experts are working on proposals to support farmers and address the issue. Similar pest infestations are being reported across the African continent.

Ngombe, a 23-year-old hairdresser and social media influencer with over 12,000 followers on TikTok, was arrested in Douala on July 24 after posting videos advocating for democratic reforms ahead of the 2025 presidential election in the country.

Ngombe's arrest and subsequent detention at the State Defence Secretariat (SED) in Yaoundé drew widespread criticism from human rights organisations and advocates for freedom of expression.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) highlighted the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and association in Cameroon and called on the government to listen to peaceful demands for reform instead of stifling dissent.

“Cameroonian authorities should listen to peaceful demands for reform instead of stifling freedom of expression,” HRW said in a statement on Monday, July 29.

The young activist's videos encouraged Cameroonians to register to vote in the February 2025 presidential election and questioned the authorities' intolerance of criticism. In one of his videos, Ngombe expressed doubts about the electoral process's fairness, even if many youths registered to vote.

“I know many of you have not yet registered for the presidential election -- no worries, I know you will,” Ngombe says in French. “I have already enrolled on the electoral list, but I know that, even if millions of us register massively, the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement … will still do everything possible to win.”

Ngombe's lawyer, Barrister Akere Muna, confirmed that the activist had been granted bail and that no charges had yet been filed against him. Muna, who is also an opposition politician, stated that "authorities might decide to either drop the case or press charges after further investigation."

The release of Ngombe has been welcomed by human rights advocates, who continue to call for all charges against him to be dropped. Ilaria Allegrozzi, a senior Sahel researcher at HRW, emphasised that Ngombe should never have been arrested in the first place and that his place is not in prison.

“His place is not in prison,” she posted on X . “He should have never been arrested."

This incident comes amid heightened tensions in Cameroon, where President Paul Biya's government has faced criticism for handling dissent and efforts to extend his four-decade rule.

The recent warning by the Minister of Communication, René Emmanuel Sadi, against using "irreverent or offensive" language towards President Biya underlines the government's sensitivity to criticism.

On Friday, July 26, the South African police raided a farm in White River, uncovering what they described as an "illegal" military camp. The operation led to the arrest of 95 Libyan nationals who were allegedly receiving military training.

The police found military tents, licensed firearms, and other military equipment at the site. The detainees had reportedly entered South Africa on study visas, claiming they were training to become security guards.

The news of the arrests left many locals in shock. "It's alarming to think that something like this was happening right under our noses," said Sarah Mkhize, a resident of White River. "We always thought of our town as a peaceful place."

Others expressed concerns about the potential implications for local security. "If they were training for military purposes, what were they planning to do?" questioned Thabo Ndlovu, another resident. "It's scary to think about."

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe assured the public that there was no immediate threat to community safety.

"We take any threat to the security and stability of our province and country very seriously," said Mathe. The police are currently investigating whether there are more such camps in other parts of the country.

The incident has raised questions about South Africa's border security and the effectiveness of its immigration controls.

"This situation highlights the need for stricter monitoring of foreign nationals entering the country," said local government official Jackie Macie.

As investigations continue, the local community remains on edge, waiting for more information about the detainees and their intentions.

"We hope the authorities get to the bottom of this quickly," said Mkhize. "We need to know that our town is safe."

What they said

"Imran Khan and Bibi Sahiba are acquitted," Khan's lawyer, Naeem Panjutha, posted on X . Earlier this month, a United Nations panel of experts deemed Khan’s detention arbitrary and stated it “had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office. Thus, from the outset, that prosecution was not grounded in law and was reportedly instrumentalised for a political purpose.”

The 24-year-old portrait artist found himself at the centre of a legal storm after burning a picture of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The act he recorded and shared on social media was deemed a violation of the country's cybercrime laws, specifically spreading false information and cyber-harassment.

The video, which went viral, showed Chaula expressing strong words against the president, an action that led to his arrest and subsequent charge. The court decided to sentence him to two years in prison or pay a fine of 5 million shillings ($1,884).

The case sparked widespread debate over the boundaries of artistic expression and freedom of speech . Some lawyers argued that Chaula's actions did not break any law, while others contended that the sentence was too harsh, especially considering the artist's admission of the crime.

In response to Chaula's plight, users of social media platforms, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), rallied together to raise the necessary funds. Within six hours, they collected over $2,000 to pay the fine and secure Chaula's freedom.

According to the BBC, the remaining amount has been given to Chaula to support his artwork, as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement for his future endeavours.

"Thank you very much fellow Tanzanians for coming to my rescue," Mr Chaula told journalists shortly after his release on Monday, July 8.

There is a history of legal consequences for disrespectful comments towards African heads of state. For instance, in May 2024, Sainani Nkhoma faced arrest after manipulating an image to depict President Lazarus Chakwera's face on a cartoon character dancing oddly, along with offensive remarks about the president.

In a related case, Raphael Okoe Ankrah, aged 40, was detained by police in Ghana due to his disparaging comments about President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which he shared via a social media video in May 2023.

Honda streamlines Thai operations

Honda has announced plans to consolidate vehicle production in Thailand by focusing on its Prachinburi plant and repurposing the Ayutthaya facility for parts manufacturing. This decision comes as Honda faces increasing competition from Chinese brands and growing demand for electric vehicles in the Thai market. The restructuring aims to address declining production and sales, improve efficiency, and align manufacturing output with market demand. It also reflects a cautious approach to future investments in the country. The shift towards electric vehicles and the entry of new competitors are forcing established players like Honda to reassess their strategies and operational structures in the Southeast Asian automotive industry, WION reports.

Woman barred from flying home to London

Yoga teacher Rosie Viscomi was prevented from boarding her flight back to London from Thailand due to a tear in her passport. Despite extending her visa and securing the necessary documents, airline officials refused to let her board, leaving her stranded and facing additional expenses. She was also accused of staying in Thailand illegally. According to the Mirror , the dance and yoga instructor, residing in Norfolk, had made the Thai island of Koh Pha-ngan her home since April, following the completion of her yoga certification in India. During her stay, Rosie deepened her understanding of yoga and engaged in volunteer activities, before deciding to return to the UK.

Police investigate a Chinese couple for having intercourse in a car park

Authorities in Thailand are investigating an incident involving a Chinese couple allegedly engaging in intimate behaviour in a public car park at a popular tourist destination. The incident, which took place at Chiang Mai University, a well-known spot among international visitors, was reported to the police after bystanders witnessed the couple's behaviour and took photos, which subsequently circulated on social media. According to eyewitnesses, the couple had ordered food from a nearby vendor before the incident occurred, Independent reports.

ADB launches climate finance initiative

ADB has launched a climate finance program in Thailand to boost climate finance and support the country's net-zero emissions target. The programme includes developing innovative finance tools and strategic partnerships with organisations like Thailand’s DCCE and Agence française de développement. ESG News highlights that ADB is committed to enhancing climate-focused activities in Thailand and helping the country achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Chinese toy trend in Southeast Asia

Chinese toy brand Pop Mart's character Labubu has become extremely popular in Southeast Asia, with Thailand using the fluffy monster in a tourism campaign. Celebrity endorsements, such as K-pop star Blackpink's Lisa, have also contributed to the character's popularity. However, the surge in demand has also led to scams and fraudulent sales, causing the Thai government to warn the public, reports CNA . The success of Labubu in Thailand has also prompted the country to facilitate travel for Chinese tourists. The brand's success has also led to competitors entering the market in Southeast Asia.

Over a month later, he remains in Kasangati prison, depressed , partly due to the forced removal of his dreadlocks, which were a significant part of his Rasta identity.

He is "depressed", his lawyer George Musisi told BBC News, and having to cut off the dreadlocks he spent 17 years growing is one of the main reasons.

Haircuts are standard procedure for all inmates in Uganda but Mr Madoi's locs were key to his Rasta identity, Mr Musisi says.

Opposition leader Bobi Wine, for whom Madoi designed signature red overalls, visited him and expressed solidarity on social media, questioning the arrest since the same overalls are worn publicly by Wine himself.

Critics suggest Madoi's arrest is linked to his association with Wine. Police claim they found illegal military garments at Madoi's school, but his lawyer disputes this, noting a lack of evidence.

Madoi, a renowned designer with several African fashion awards, has also designed for celebrities like Lucky Dube and Busy Signal. The "#FreeLatif" campaign is gaining traction on social media.

Citizens vote for constitutional change

In Vanuatu's inaugural referendum, the electorate affirmed two constitutional amendments designed to stabilize the nation's volatile political landscape. The government's objective is to halt the practice of party-switching and compel independent politicians to affiliate with established parties, with the populace casting the decisive vote. This comes on the heels of numerous no-confidence motions and a trio of governmental turnovers in 2023. Article 17A garnered the approval of 59.28 percent of the voters, which equates to 53,809 individuals. This provision mandates the automatic relinquishment of a parliamentary seat by members who resign or are dismissed due to withdrawing their support from a political party, reports Scoop .

Teachers end strike

Schools in Vanuatu have resumed classes following the suspension of a countrywide teachers' strike. The strike was called off after the Vanuatu Teacher’s Union settled with the government. The protest, which saw over 1,000 educators, predominantly from state schools, abandon their posts, was sparked by postponed payments of dues, according to ABC . Johnathan Yona, the Secretary General of the Vanuatu Teachers Union, stated that the accord necessitates a governmental blueprint for the disbursement of these entitlements. "Within 14 days, the Government will plan when and how much to pay the outstanding claims," said Mr Yona. "I hope the message is clear to the government...worker's rights are very important and should be considered whenever Government implements policy."

Chinese disguised as Vanuatuan arrested

Vigilant immigration officials at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) apprehended a man suspected of being a Chinese national impersonating a Vanuatuan during the past weekend, just as he was about to embark on a Thai Airways journey to Bangkok. The individual, identified by Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco on Sunday as 43-year-old Alex Cooper, a Vanuatu passport holder, has been taken into custody. As reported by The Manila Times , Cooper is currently held at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) detention centre in Taguig City, facing an investigation over his dubious identity, which could lead to his deportation.

Grounded carrier Air Vanuatu eyes potential investors for revival

The appointed liquidators representing the now-defunct airline Air Vanuatu have disclosed that multiple parties have shown interest in acquiring the airline. On May 9, 2024, Air Vanuatu ceased operations, grounding its aircraft and nullifying all scheduled flights, while designating the advisory company EY to manage its liquidation. The abrupt halt in Air Vanuatu's operations resulted in numerous travellers from Australia and New Zealand being marooned in the South Pacific, necessitating the arrangement of alternate flights with different carriers in the vicinity, reports Aerotime Hub . “We have received interest from a range of parties seeking to resume Air Vanuatu’s operations,” says Morgan Kelly, Partner in Strategy & Transactions at EY. “We’re reviewing these offers and will be working toward a resolution as soon as possible.”

Citizenship controversy

The Citizenship Commission of Vanuatu has confirmed that an Australian businessman, despite his conviction, passed all required screenings before being awarded citizenship and a Vanuatu passport. Andrew Spira received his citizenship several months post his arrest on charges of fraud and narcotics in Australia, yet prior to his conviction. This incident has once again spotlighted the debate surrounding Vanuatu's citizenship-by-investment program. Moreover, it coincides with the European Commission's contemplation to revoke Vanuatu's visa exemption status within the EU, as ABC has reported. Allan Liki, the secretary general of Vanuatu's Citizenship Commission, stated that Spira underwent multiple vetting processes, including checks by INTERPOL and Vanuatu's Financial Intelligence Unit. "We received from Interpol at the Vanuatu police force, they have given an offence against Mr Spira but it was specifically on his passport, that his passport was either lost or stolen, which to us is not categorised as a criminal offence or any other activity as such," said Liki.

Tourist arrivals to increase

Zimbabwe's tourism industry is expected to strengthen over 2024, building on a gradual recovery from the pandemic. Despite increasing over 2024, arrivals are expected to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels in 2025. Over the medium term (2025-2028), arrivals will continue expanding, with growth underpinned by diversification in Zimbabwe's key source markets and the country's wide range of travel and tourism offerings. Over 2024, Zimbabwe's tourist arrivals are projected to increase to 2.0 million, up from 1.6 million in 2023, and growing by 27.4% year-on-year. However, they will be lower than the pre-pandemic level in 2019, with a fully recovering period in 2025.

Opposition leader and 80 youths arrested

Zimbabwean police have detained opposition leader Jameson Timba and 80 youths for participating in an unauthorised political gathering. Timba, who recently became interim leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change, alleges the party was co-opted by the ruling ZANU-PF party. The arrests are expected to result in charges of violations of public order laws, the Zimbabwe Mail reports.

Zimbabwean jailed in the UK for removing condom during sex

A Zimbabwean man based in the UK, Guy Mukendi, has been jailed for over four years for removing a condom during sex. The offence, known as "stealthing," is classified as rape. Mukendi claimed he did it because he had not had sex in a long time. The victim contacted police in May 2023 after realising the incident. The Sexual Offences Act 2003 states that someone did not consent to sex if the other person tricked them about the nature of the sex. In April 2024, Mukendi was convicted guilty of rape. A five-year restraining order has been given to the victim, according to local publication The Chronicle .

ZiG currency shows stability

Zimbabwe's Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency has shown stability, trading at 13.5 against the US dollar slightly above its initial launch price, according to the central bank. The central bank maintains this stability through strict actions against street traders and fines for transacting outside the official exchange rate. The government has also removed the 180-day holding rule for stock market transactions. However, concerns remain about the long-term viability of the ZiG currency due to Zimbabwe's history of currency collapses and the sustainability of the currency peg, the Zimbabwe Mail reports.

Wheat surplus

Zimbabwe has planted 121,769 hectares of wheat, 34% above last year, ensuring an even greater surplus over normal consumption and allowing more wheat processed foods to be manufactured and sold. The expected harvest of over 600,000 tonnes will not only meet the ordinary requirements of 360,000 tonnes but will allow a far greater range of wheat products to be manufactured and eaten, according to local media The Herald . The expected surplus of 240,000 tonnes will contribute to the Strategic Grain Reserve, which currently stands at about 400,000 tonnes, to ensure food security.

President visits Iran

President Kais Saied of Tunisia has embarked on a historic visit to Tehran, marking the first instance of a Tunisian leader visiting Iran. According to the Tehran Times , the unexpected journey was motivated by President Saied's intention to honour the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who tragically perished in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran on Sunday. Previously, President Saied had met with his Iranian counterpart during various summits, where they agreed to enhance cooperation and strengthen the relationship between Iran and Tunisia.

Support for Saied amid lawyers' strike

Tunisia protestors rallied in support of President Kais Saied amid a lawyers' strike prompted by the violent arrest of lawyer Sonia Dahmani. International organisations and foreign authorities have expressed concerns over the arrests, with President Saied speaking out against foreign interference. The strike and protests were in response to the raid of the Bar Association offices in Tunis and the arrest of Dahmani, who was charged with distributing false information and disrupting public order as reported by Jurist News . The protestors gathered in front of the Municipal Theatre of Tunis carrying banners condemning foreign interference, and the presence of migrants, and affirming Tunisia’s independence and sovereignty.

Journalist arrested over social media posts

Tunisian journalist Houssem Hajlaoui, co-founder of the independent news website Inkyfada, was arrested over old social media posts from 2020-2023. The Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for his immediate and unconditional release, citing concerns over the government's targeting of journalists and civil society figures. Hajlaoui's arrest is part of a wider crackdown on independent media and civil society in Tunisia.

Foreign investments soar

Foreign direct investments (FDI) in Tunisia reached 516.8 million dinars during the period, marking a 27.7 percent increase year-on-year. However, portfolio investments fell by 98 percent, totalling just 600,000 dinars, reports Azad News Agency . By sector, FDI in manufacturing led with 250.5 million dinars, followed by the energy sector with 176.9 million dinars, the services sector with 84.5 million dinars, and the agricultural sector with 4.9 million dinars, according to FIPA.

IMARS load training exercise

The U.S. Air Force and Army conducted a joint training exercise with the Tunisian Air Force to practice loading the M142 HIMARS rocket system onto a C-130J Super Hercules. The exercise took place at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, involving Tunisian and U.S. Air Force loadmasters and U.S. Army HIMARS personnel. According to Dvids , the training aimed to ensure precision and safety in the loading process, as the HIMARS system can be transported aboard aircraft for rapid deployment. The exercise was part of the larger African Lion exercise, which focuses on strengthening readiness and interoperability among participating nations.

Identified as Sainani Nkhoma, he was reported to have superimposed the president's face onto an animated figure performing bizarre dance moves accompanied by insulting comments directed at the president.

Convicted on May 17, Nkhoma was arrested after the video, which quickly circulated on social media, was reported to the ruling Malawi Congress Party and the police by members of a community WhatsApp group where he posted the content to mock the president, Africanews reports.

Presiding Judge Talakwanji Mndala who is expected to hand down a verdict next week also warned that Nkhoma faces a potential fine of approximately $3,500 or a six-year prison sentence.

Despite public uproar concerning the court's decision, Malawian President Chakwera who has governed the nation since 2020 has yet to respond.

His presidency followed a historic win in a 2019 rerun election, where he defeated the incumbent Peter Mutharika with 58.57% of the votes. His victory was significant as it marked the first time in Africa that an election was repealed due to irregularities and led to the opposition candidate winning the subsequent rerun.

There have been precedents to arrests trailing insults targeted at heads of state in Africa. Over the past decade in Zimbabwe, more than 70 people have been arrested for insulting former President Robert Mugabe. Additionally, 40-year-old Raphael Okoe Ankrah was remanded into police custody in Ghana after he insulted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a video posted to social media in May 2023.

Burkinabé activist Kambou Ollo Mathias was arrested for insulting junta leader Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba on September 5, 2022, according to reports . Plainclothes police officers apprehended Mathias as he was leaving a local radio programme, where he had commented on the State of the Nation address given by the military leader.

AMLO’s approval rate

According to the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA), since he began his six-year term in December 2018, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has been described as the “Teflon president,” due to his high popularity despite numerous scandals and controversial remarks. A quick review of popularity polls conducted by AS/COA shows that about two-thirds of Mexicans approve of AMLO and his administration. The current President outperforms three of his predecessors and matches the popularity levels of Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000). About 55% of Mexicans think the country is on a good or very good path, and 52% think AMLO’s government has been successful. López Obrador remains very popular among people over 50 years old (69% approval rate).

Minimum wage increase

El Universal reports that on January 1, a 20% increase in minimum wages came into effect in Mexico. This means that workers with this income should be paid 248.93 pesos daily (about US$14.60). The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) plans to monitor compliance with the new increase through its annual inspection program, focusing on economic obligations. Workers not receiving the proper payment can report irregularities to the STPS. With this increase, the minimum wage will cover the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy's (Coneval) Poverty Line by 1.73 times.

420 massacres in 2023

According to CNN , an armed attack in the municipality of Cajeme, Sonora, in northwest Mexico, resulted in at least six dead and 26 injured, as reported by Mexican authorities on December 29th. The Sonora Prosecutor's Office stated that the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time on Thursday when three armed individuals stormed "a gathering with several attendees". Gustavo Salas Sánchez, Sonora's prosecutor, mentioned that one of the six deceased had five arrest warrants for charges including homicide, femicide, illegal deprivation of liberty, and criminal association. Authorities suspected he might have been the target of the attack. Causa en Común , a human rights organization, registered over 420 massacres in Mexico in 2023.

Indigenous communities' influence

Three decades after the Zapatista uprising, Mexico's indigenous communities have no place in the country's political or cultural landscapes, according to Raúl Romero, a sociologist interviewed by Revista Proceso . On January 1st, 1994 the Zapatista Army for National Liberation coordinated a 12-day uprising in the state of Chiapas, Mexico in protest of the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement. According to Romero, the Zapatista movement exposed the shortcomings of the Mexican cultural and political system, revealing the semi-colonial conditions in which indigenous communities lived. However, not much has changed since then, says Romero. While some elected officials come from indigenous communities, he laments that real autonomy is an illusion.

Businessman with ties to drug cartels arrested in Madrid

According to Revista Proceso , on December 31st, businessman Jonathan Alexis Weinberg Pinto was arrested in Madrid, accused of being a frontman and a key accomplice of Genaro García Luna, Mexico's former Security minister accused of taking bribes from a drug cartel. The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) reported that Weinberg Pinto is now subject to extradition. Last year, the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), Pablo Gómez, exposed the "corrupt network" that García Luna operated for 20 years and allowed him and his accomplices to acquire properties and luxury cars in the United States. Businessman Weinberg Pinto is accused of organized crime, money laundering, and embezzlement.

The incident

The AfDB Group reported on October 31 2023 that two of its employees had been the victims of illegitimate arrest, physical abuse, and involuntary incarceration by Ethiopian security personnel. According to the group, there was no official explanation for the episode, which resulted in a major diplomatic crisis.

“This is a very serious diplomatic incident, and the African Development Bank has since lodged a formal complaint with the Ethiopian authorities. For their part, the government has formally acknowledged our complaint, recognised the gravity of the incident, and reassured us that all those involved in breaking the law will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice, ensuring transparency and full accountability,” the AfDB said in a statement .

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed intervened, leading to the release of the employees.

“We are pleased that the Prime Minister of Ethiopia immediately acted when he learnt of the incident, ordered the immediate release of the affected staff and promised to order an immediate investigation into the incident,” the AfDB group said.

Withdrawal decision

According to the President of AfDB Akinwumi Adesina, the bank on November 22 2023 sent a delegation to engage with senior Ethiopian authorities and its staff in Addis Ababa to assess the situation.

“The assessment from the Bank's delegation indicates that the situation is still not yet resolved in a satisfactory manner. It also does not provide full confidence that all the African Development Bank’s employees feel safe and secure to carry out their duties and move around the country without fear of harassment,” the AfDB president said .

Despite diplomatic efforts, the AfDB Group on December 20 2023 decided to withdraw all of its international staff from the East African nation.

“The October incident continues to cause much anxiety across the African Development Bank Group and especially among staff at the Ethiopia country office… the Bank’s international staff in Ethiopia will work remotely outside the country,” the Bank said in a statement.

AfDB-Ethiopia relations

While expressing appreciation for the longstanding positive relations with Ethiopia, the AfDB stated that it remains committed to supporting the country's socioeconomic development. However, it emphasized that the incident's full resolution is crucial to maintaining its operations and future presence in Ethiopia.

“The Bank appreciates the excellent relations it has with Ethiopia until this egregious incident, its continued operations and future presence in the country could be negatively affected if the incident is not fully resolved,” Adesina said.

The AfDB's current portfolio in Ethiopia consists of 22 projects valued at $1.24 billion as of September 30, 2023.
