Prabowo says Indonesia never pledged $1 billion to Trump’s Board of Peace

In a statement issued on Sunday, Prabowo said the Board of Peace had only asked whether Indonesia would be willing to contribute peacekeeping forces, not make a financial commitment.

He said Indonesia had “never committed to contributing financially at all” and was not present at the founding donors’ meeting in Washington on February 19, where several countries made funding pledges.

Foreign Minister Sugiono had already moved to clarify the issue on March 17, saying the $1 billion figure was not a mandatory membership fee and that Indonesia’s participation in the board was not tied to any fixed financial contribution.

The Board of Peace is a 28-country coalition backing a US plan for post-war Gaza.

Earlier reports said donors at the Washington meeting had pledged an initial $17 billion for reconstruction, emergency relief and security stabilisation, including $10 billion from the United States and $7 billion from nine other countries.

Prabowo said Indonesia’s main contribution would instead be the possible deployment of peacekeeping troops, adding that Jakarta could take on a larger role once reconstruction begins. He pointed to Indonesia’s earlier humanitarian support for Palestine, including assistance channelled through the National Alms Agency and the construction of a hospital.

He also said Indonesia joined the board because it saw a pathway towards Palestinian statehood, citing parts of a 21-point US proposal that refer to statehood and dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians. Those provisions, he said, were in line with Indonesia’s long-standing support for a two-state solution.

The clarification comes as Indonesia’s support for the board faces sharper questions following the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The conflict has complicated Jakarta’s earlier enthusiasm for the US-backed initiative and raised pressure at home over how closely it should align itself with Washington on Middle East policy.

Indonesia was all in on the Board of Peace. Then came the Iran War.

Before the conflict erupted, President Prabowo Subianto’s administration had embraced the initiative championed by US President Donald Trump, positioning Jakarta as a key player in efforts to stabilise post-war Gaza.

Indonesia not only joined the board — a coalition of 28 countries backing a US plan to rebuild the Palestinian enclave — but also pledged to contribute 8,000 troops to the proposed International Stabilisation Force tasked with eventually replacing Israeli forces in the territory.

It was one of the most proactive foreign policy decisions by Jakarta in the Middle East in years, reflecting Prabowo’s push to expand Indonesia’s diplomatic footprint and deepen ties with Washington.

Indonesian officials argued that joining the board would allow the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation to defend Palestinian interests from within the forum, particularly as Israel was also part of the initiative while Palestinians themselves were not represented.

But this confidence has been shaken by the sudden escalation of war between the U.S., Israel and Iran, which not only disrupted regional stability but also pushed Indonesia to reassess the geopolitical implications of its alignment with a US-led platform.

This shift became evident this week during a rare high-level meeting convened by Prabowo at the State Palace in Jakarta, where the president gathered an unusually broad group of political and economic figures to discuss the crisis.

Among those present were former presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo, former vice presidents Jusuf Kalla, Ma’ruf Amin and Boediono, senior political party leaders and prominent business figures.

‘Recalculation’

For nearly four hours, these high-level people discussed Indonesia’s strategic posture amid escalating tensions and the potential fallout from disruptions to global energy and food supply chains.

And, of course, they also debated Indonesia’s position within the Board of Peace, particularly whether the Iran war could undermine the credibility and purpose of the U.S.-led initiative.

Former foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda warned Jakarta may need to “recalculate” its role.

“We discussed the board, particularly in light of the latest developments, including whether the war unfolding in Iran could undermine the platform’s position and mandate,” Hassan said.

Foreign Minister Sugiono has already indicated that discussions within the Board of Peace have effectively been suspended as attention shifts to the escalating conflict.

This uncertainty in stance reflects both strategic and domestic pressures Indonesia faces.

Indonesia has more than 519,000 citizens living across the Middle East, according to government data, many working or studying in the region. Ensuring their safety has become a pressing priority as the conflict spreads.

The government began evacuating Indonesians from Iran on March 6, with dozens of citizens — most of them students in the city of Qom — expected to return home in the coming days.

At the same time, Jakarta faces pressure at home to distance itself from initiatives associated with Washington while the United States is engaged in military action against Iran.

Will Indonesia withdraw from the Board?

Several Indonesian political and religious groups have criticised the Board of Peace, arguing that participation could undermine the country’s longstanding support for Palestinian independence and entangle it in a US-led geopolitical project.

The sensitivities are heightened by Indonesia’s identity as a Muslim-majority nation and its historical sympathy toward countries in the broader Islamic world, including Iran.

Prabowo has attempted to balance those pressures by signalling that Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace is conditional.

During a meeting with Islamic organisations this week, he reportedly assured leaders that Jakarta would withdraw from the forum if it ceased to benefit Palestinian interests or align with Indonesia’s national priorities.

For now, however, the Iran war has injected a new layer of uncertainty into Jakarta’s foreign policy — raising questions not only about the future of the Board of Peace but also about how far Indonesia is willing to align itself with Washington in an increasingly volatile Middle East.

This target comes under a collaboration agreement signed this week in London between local tech firm Danantara and U.K.-based Arm Limited, a global leader in semiconductor design for automotive, data center, and artificial intelligence applications.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the initiative seeks to accelerate capacity building and national independence in strategic technologies, with the government allocating an initial $150 million to the partnership.

It will develop six national chip designs covering automotive technology, the Internet of Things, data centers, home appliances, and futuristic areas such as autonomous vehicles and quantum computing. Indonesia will retain intellectual property rights for these designs.

The focus on chip design reflects a strategic choice , as Indonesia’s semiconductor ambitions have long been constrained by a shortage of skilled engineers.

The country produced 30 to 60 million mobile phones annually and is projected to import 1.57 million laptops in 2026. Imports of semiconductors surged to $4.87 billion in 2021, nearly doubling from 2020.

In the automotive sector, which assembled over 800,000 vehicles last year, electric and hybrid models consume roughly three times more chips per unit than conventional vehicles.

This also forms part of the global response to broader chip demand, with the market growing 23% from $407.9 billion in 2017 to $501.3 billion in 2021, driven by electrification, digitalization, and AI expansion.

For Indonesia, building domestic design capacity is seen as the most feasible entry point before moving to capital-intensive fabrication.

Universities including ITB, UGM, and the University of Indonesia will help develop the talent pipeline. Engineers will receive training directly from Arm’s ecosystem.

“The collaboration will continue to develop the next generation of semiconductors or chips, so that Indonesia has capabilities in the semiconductor and design fields,” said Airlangga Hartarto, Malaysia’s coordinating minister for economic affairs.

Why Indonesia was chosen Deputy Commander of the Gaza peacekeeping force

This announcement came at the first Board of Peace meeting in Washington, D.C., where U.S. President Donald Trump and ISF commander Major General Jasper Jeffers confirmed Indonesia’s role in the mission.

Jeffers said the deployment aims to provide “the security Gaza needs for a future of prosperity and enduring peace.”

Number of troops

President Prabowo Subianto, attending the meeting, said Indonesia would deploy troops within two months, starting with an advance team to assess risks and plan operations. The country has pledged up to 8,000 troops, the largest contingent of any ISF member.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono explained that the deputy commander role reflects both the size of the Indonesian contingent and the military’s extensive peacekeeping experience.

“Indonesian troops are also the largest there, this deputy commander for operations is also something that honors and appreciates Indonesia's track record," Sugiono said.

The ISF will operate under a U.S.-led Board of Peace. Indonesia’s forces will be deployed across Gaza’s five sectors — Rafah, Khan Yunis, Deir el-Balah, Gaza City, and Northern Gaza — with an initial focus on Rafah.

Humanitarian focus, not combat

While Indonesia leads the largest deployment after the U.S., its troops are assigned strictly to humanitarian and stabilization tasks, not combat. The government has warned it will withdraw if the ISF deviates from agreed mandates.

Other countries contributing troops include Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania, while Egypt and Jordan will train Gaza’s local police. The ISF’s long-term plan calls for 20,000 troops and 12,000 police officers on the ground.

The Board of Peace also aims to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and demilitarization, a plan opposed by Hamas, which has rejected foreign intervention and disarmament.

Trump highlighted Indonesia’s role during the meeting, praising Prabowo for his commitment and leadership. Members of the board pledged $7 billion toward Gaza relief, a fraction of the estimated $70 billion needed to rebuild after years of conflict.

The agreement was finalised during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Washington. It maintains a 19% tariff rate on Indonesian goods, reduced from the initial 32% proposed last year.

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, described the deal as a ”‘win-win’ for both countries” that “respects the sovereignty of both countries.”

Under the agreement, several Indonesian exports, including coffee, chocolate, natural rubber, and spices, will enter the U.S. market tariff-free.

Indonesia is also seeking exemptions for an additional 1,700 commodities, including palm oil. In return, Indonesia will remove tariff barriers on most U.S. products and align its domestic standards with U.S. regulations covering vehicle safety, emissions, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

President Prabowo and U.S. President Donald Trump also signed a document titled “Implementation of the Agreement Toward a NEW GOLDEN AGE for the US-Indonesian Alliance.” The framework follows the signing of private-sector and government agreements earlier in the week, valued at US$38.4 billion.

“We have been negotiating very intensively over the past few months, and I believe we have reached a solid agreement on many issues,” President Prabowo said during a meeting with business leaders.

The visit also included discussions on security cooperation. At the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace (BoP), President Prabowo pledged up to 8,000 troops to support an International Stabilisation Force for Gaza.

“We are fully committed to this plan and that is why we joined the Board of Peace,” Prabowo said. He added, “We know there will be a lot of obstacles… but we are very optimistic with the leadership of President Trump, this vision of real peace will be achieved.”

The Indonesian military has indicated that an advance team of 1,000 personnel could be ready by April, with the full contingent prepared by June.

The trade agreement will take effect 90 days after both countries complete the required legal procedures. Indonesia will also facilitate U.S. investment in critical minerals and energy resources under terms similar to those offered to domestic investors.

“We are fully committed to this plan and that is why we joined the Board of Peace ,” Prabowo said. “We are committed to its success. We know there will be a lot of obstacles, there will be a lot of difficulties, but we are very optimistic with the leadership of President Trump, this vision of real peace will be achieved.”

Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s readiness to contribute significantly to the international stabilization effort.

“There will be problems, but we will prevail. We will achieve our dream of peace in Palestine , a lasting and peaceful solution for the Palestinian problem and in Gaza,” he said.

At the landmark meeting, Prabowo also reiterated that Indonesia is prepared to provide up to 8,000 troops to the International Stabilization Force, stating, “We are prepared to contribute the troops to take part actively … to make this peace work.”

The announcement aligns with statements from the Indonesian military, which said up to 8,000 personnel could be ready for deployment by June, with an advance team of roughly 1,000 prepared by April.

The Indonesian National Armed Forces, known as TNI, have finalized the troop structure and a timeline, though actual deployment requires presidential approval and adherence to international mechanisms.

Indonesia’s participation would mark the first formal troop commitment to the U.S.-led Board of Peace stabilization effort in Gaza . The country has long supported Palestinian statehood, provided humanitarian aid, and participated in global peacekeeping.

Prabowo framed the move as both a humanitarian and strategic mission: “The achievements of the ceasefire are real, we commend this and therefore we reaffirm our commitment.”

Financial market reforms accelerate amid leadership changes at OJK

Indonesia’s financial regulatory environment is undergoing renewed scrutiny following leadership changes at the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The issue centres on how regulatory continuity will be maintained while advancing reforms aimed at improving market stability and investor confidence. The discussion reflects broader concerns about governance, oversight capacity, and the pace at which Indonesia’s financial system can adapt to domestic and global pressures. The topic has become a focal point for policymakers and market observers alike as Indonesia positions itself within regional and global financial markets.

President Prabowo outlines strategic direction at national coordination meeting

At a National Coordination Meeting, President Prabowo Subianto set out strategic directions for government ministries and state institutions. The meeting emphasised alignment across sectors, signalling the administration’s intent to consolidate authority and streamline execution of national priorities. While the briefing does not enumerate specific policy instruments, the framing highlights coordination as a central governance challenge and a defining feature of Prabowo’s early leadership approach.

Prabowo engages former KPK chair Abraham Samad on corruption eradication

Corruption eradication re-entered the political spotlight following dialogue between President Prabowo and Abraham Samad, former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The engagement underscores persistent public and institutional concern over the effectiveness of Indonesia’s anti-corruption framework. The discussion reflects tensions between political power, enforcement independence, and public trust, all of which remain unresolved structural issues in Indonesian governance .

International spotlight on Riza Chalid as red notice is issued

Indonesia’s anti-corruption efforts extended beyond its borders with the issuance of a red notice for Riza Chalid , marking a significant international dimension to a domestic corruption case. The development positions Indonesia within global law enforcement cooperation mechanisms and raises questions about accountability for high-profile individuals. The case has drawn attention due to its cross-border implications and its symbolic weight in demonstrating the state’s willingness to pursue suspects internationally.

Electoral system under review as parliamentary threshold debate intensifies

Indonesia’s electoral framework is under renewed debate, particularly around the parliamentary threshold and broader electoral reforms. Lawmakers and political stakeholders are questioning whether current thresholds fairly balance political representation with governability. This debate unfolds alongside concerns over money politics and election integrity in regions such as Kalimantan, indicating systemic challenges that extend beyond legal thresholds to enforcement and political culture.

Indonesia chooses peace over chaos - Prabowo Subianto at Davos 2026

“ History teaches us that peace and stability are the most valuable assets a nation can have, and without them there will be no growth, no prosperity and no long-term progress,” he told delegates.

He argued that Indonesia ’s steady growth, which is above 5% annually over the past decade, inflation at around 2%, and a deficit below 3% of GDP, reflects deliberate choices.

“Peace and stability in my country did not happen by chance or by luck; it happened because we chose unity over fragmentation and collaboration over confrontation,” he said.

$1 trillion sovereign wealth bet

A major highlight of his speech was the launch of Danantara Indonesia, a sovereign wealth fund with $1 trillion in assets under management. “Danantara means the energy to power the future of Indonesia, and it is designed to finance and co-finance the industries of the future that will transform our economy,” Prabowo explained.

He pledged to overhaul the country’s vast network of state-owned enterprises to meet the highest international standards, adding that foreign professionals would be allowed to lead firms where necessary to attract “the best brains and the best minds in the world.”

Framing Indonesia as a co-investment partner rather than a passive recipient of capital, he declared: “With Danantara, Indonesia can now stand before you as an equal partner, ready to grow with you and create shared prosperity.”

Social policy as economic strategy

Prabowo described Indonesia’s large-scale social programmes as economic investments rather than political gestures. On the nationwide free nutritious meals programme serving nearly 60 million people daily, he said: “This is not a populist programme. It is a rational productivity programme that strengthens our children, supports our small enterprises and improves the long-term health of our nation.”

The initiative has incorporated more than 61,000 micro, small and medium enterprises into its supply chain. “By strengthening human capital and empowering our small businesses, we are laying the foundation for growth that is inclusive and sustainable,” he said.

On education, he underscored efforts to break generational poverty through new boarding schools and digital upgrades. “I am determined to cut the chain of poverty so that the son of a poor farmer or street vendor will not be condemned to the same fate, but will have equal opportunity to rise,” Prabowo stated.

Rule of law and anti-corruption drive

He also argued that legal certainty is central to investor confidence. “There is no investment climate without the certainty of equitable rule of law, because no serious investor will commit capital in a country where laws are ignored or selectively applied,” he said.

In his first year, the government confiscated millions of hectares of illegal plantations and mines and shut down around 1,000 illegal mining operations. Describing entrenched corruption as “greedonomics,” he said: “We cannot allow the economics of greed and rapacious practices to undermine our democracy , our environment and the future of our children.”

He added a direct warning to corrupt actors: “I challenge anyone who believes that Indonesian officials can be bought to test that assumption under my administration, because they will find that we are serious about clean government.”

Trade, integration and the Global South

Prabowo rejected protectionism and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to fair trade integration. “We do not pursue trade agreements because they are fashionable, but because we believe fair integration into the global economy is a tool for prosperity and not a threat to sovereignty,” he said.

On Indonesia’s foreign policy posture, he said: “Indonesia chooses peace over chaos, friendship over enmity, and we believe that one thousand friends are too few while one enemy is one too many.”

Indonesia is preparing to host an Ocean Impact Summit in Bali, and Prabowo was confident that Indonesia aims to play a more assertive role from within the Global South.

Indonesia to ban rice, sugar, and corn imports in 2026

The Indonesian government has announced a total ban on the import of rice, table sugar, and corn starting in 2026, citing rising domestic production and a push toward national food self-sufficiency. Senior official at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, Tatang Yuliono, said the decision follows a review of the 2026 National Commodity Balance, which shows the country has achieved self-reliance in these key staples for household consumption. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the policy was directed by President Prabowo Subianto to protect local farmers and breeders. The ban also includes industrial-grade rice imports, aimed at forcing businesses to source raw materials locally. The government projects table sugar production of 3 million tonnes and corn output of 18 million tonnes in 2026, both exceeding national demand, providing a buffer for price stability and food security.

Prabowo orders faster recovery of schools and hospitals after Sumatra disasters

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed his cabinet to prioritise the restoration of schools, hospitals, and community health centres damaged by flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Speaking during a limited meeting in Aceh Tamiang, he also urged officials to accelerate the construction of shelters for evacuees. The disasters, which struck on November 25, 2025, killed more than a thousand people and caused widespread destruction of homes and public infrastructure. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that as of December 29, 87 affected hospitals have resumed operations, while most of the 867 damaged community health centres are functional, with eight still unable to operate normally. Efforts are also ongoing to clean and restore schools, with support from military personnel.

Alert level raised for Mount Bur Ni Telong volcano in Aceh

Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level for Mount Bur Ni Telong in Aceh to the second-highest level following increased seismic activity. Acting head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, said the volcano recorded multiple shallow and deep volcanic earthquakes, alongside tectonic quakes, prompting scientists to raise the alert on December 31. She warned of possible phreatic eruptions and dangerous volcanic gases near fumarole and solfatara zones. Residents and visitors have been advised to stay at least four kilometres away from the crater. The heightened alert comes as the region continues to recover from recent floods and landslides that killed more than 1,100 people across Sumatra.

Expansion of renewable energy investment in Indonesia

Abu Dhabi-based clean energy company Masdar has pledged to increase its investment in Indonesia’s renewable energy sector. The commitment was conveyed during a meeting in Abu Dhabi between Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly Eddy Soeparno and senior Masdar executives on December 27. Eddy said Indonesia, under President Prabowo Subianto, is accelerating its energy transition to achieve energy sovereignty while maintaining environmental sustainability. Masdar, already a key investor in the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant in West Java, expressed support for Indonesia’s ambition to reach 100 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity. Indonesian lawmakers said several bills, including the Renewable Energy Bill and Climate Change Management Bill, are being prioritised to support the transition.

Indonesia records zero terrorist attacks in 2025

Indonesia has recorded zero terrorist attacks throughout 2025, marking the third consecutive year without an attack, according to the National Police. Criminal Investigation Agency chief Syahardiantono said the achievement was driven by proactive operations by the counterterrorism unit Densus 88. Police arrested 51 terror-related suspects in 2025, down from previous years, and foiled four planned attacks by the Jamaah Anshor Daulah group. Authorities also uncovered online radicalisation targeting children, affecting 110 minors across 23 provinces. During the Christmas and New Year security operation, seven additional suspects were arrested, while police said they intervened in cases involving children exposed to violent far-right ideologies.

Indonesia targets 400,000 families for poverty ‘graduation’ in 2026

Indonesia’s Social Affairs Ministry plans to help at least 400,000 families achieve economic independence in 2026, a major increase from the 77,000 households that “graduated” from social assistance programmes this year. Minister Saifullah Yusuf said the expansion is supported by a larger 2025 budget and aims to break long-term poverty cycles by combining capital support, training, and business mentoring. Families exiting schemes such as PKH and basic food aid will continue to receive guidance to prevent them from slipping back into poverty, with further empowerment overseen by the new Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment. The initiative targets structural, sustainable poverty reduction.

Prabowo to visit Pakistan to mark 75 years of Indonesia-Pakistan ties

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will visit Pakistan on December 8 to 9 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking his first trip there since taking office in 2024 and coinciding with 75 years of Indonesia-Pakistan diplomatic ties. Prabowo is expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and senior military officials, with both sides set to discuss expanding cooperation in trade, defence, investment, health, IT, climate, education, and culture. Several agreements are likely to be signed. Reports say Prabowo departed from Aceh after inspecting disaster-hit areas, though the Presidential Palace has yet to confirm his travel.

Indonesia to extend free meal program to disabled in 2026

Indonesia will deliver free breakfast and lunch to 36,000 people with disabilities starting in 2026, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf announced. Meals will be prepared by community groups and delivered directly to recipients’ homes by village cadres, who will also provide emotional and social support. The program will expand to 100,000 elderly beneficiaries and is guided by Presidential Instruction No. 4, ensuring accurate targeting through detailed national data. Launched in January 2025, the wider meal initiative already serves 49 million Indonesians daily, with a nationwide expansion planned to reach 82.9 million people by March 2026.

Prabowo doubles aid to Rp4 billion as Sumatra disaster toll climbs

President Prabowo Subianto has doubled emergency funding to Rp4 billion ($239,000) for each of the 52 districts and cities hit by floods and landslides in Sumatra, after Home Minister Tito Karnavian requested half that amount. Prabowo also ordered an additional Rp20 billion ($1.19 million) for the worst-affected province and pledged full central government support. Regional contingency funds are reportedly running low, with some areas left with only Rp75 million ($4,493). A separate pooling scheme has gathered Rp34 billion ($2.03 million) for redistribution. According to BNPB, the disasters have killed 929 people, left 274 missing, and affected millions across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Indonesia to repatriate two elderly Dutch drug convicts

Indonesia and the Netherlands have agreed to repatriate two elderly Dutch drug convicts — one on death row — after a humanitarian request from The Hague. Siegfried Mets, 74, sentenced to death in 2008 for smuggling 600,000 ecstasy pills, and Ali Tokman, 65, whose death sentence for MDMA smuggling was later reduced to life imprisonment, will be flown to Amsterdam on December 8. Indonesian minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said President Prabowo approved the request, noting Mets’ deteriorating health. Dutch officials welcomed the move, saying it would allow both men to be closer to their families and reflected strong bilateral ties.

Over 500 killed as Cyclone Senyar triggers catastrophic flooding across Asia

More than 500 people have died , and hundreds more have been injured after devastating floods caused by rare cyclonic rains swept through Indonesia early last week. Rescue teams are still struggling to reach the worst-affected areas on the island of Sumatra, where thousands of residents remain cut off without access to essential supplies. Cyclone Senyar, described as an exceptionally rare tropical storm, triggered massive landslides and submerged thousands of homes and buildings. The effects of torrential rain extended beyond Indonesia, with Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka also hit by severe storms. Across Asia, more than 900 people have died this month as extreme weather continues to impact millions.

Indonesia posts smaller October trade surplus amid weak Chinese demand

Indonesia recorded a smaller-than-expected trade surplus in October as exports fell unexpectedly due to softer demand from China and reduced shipments of mining products, according to official data released Monday. The surplus stood at USD 2.4 billion, well below economists’ forecasts of USD 3.72 billion and down from September’s USD 4.34 billion, marking the smallest monthly surplus since April. Exports dropped 2.31% year-on-year to USD 24.24 billion, driven by lower coal and copper shipments. Analysts noted that exporters had accelerated shipments to the United States earlier in the year, ahead of tariff measures introduced in August. Operations at Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg mine were also temporarily halted following a fatal mud-flow disaster in September, adding to the export slowdown.

Bank Indonesia warns of dim global outlook as protectionism reshapes trade

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo has cautioned that global economic uncertainty remains high, driven largely by protectionist policies in the United States, which he said are reshaping the global economic landscape. Speaking at the 2025 Bank Indonesia Annual Meeting, Warjiyo projected a “dim” economic outlook for 2026 and 2027, citing declining world trade, weakened multilateralism, slowing growth in major economies, and persistent inflation complicating monetary policy. He highlighted additional risks, including high government debt in developed countries, rising financial system vulnerabilities, and the rapid growth of private-sector cryptocurrencies amid limited regulation. Warjiyo stressed the need for strong policy responses to maintain stability, strengthen economic resilience, and promote sustainable growth.

Prabowo targets renovation of 60,000 schools next year

President Prabowo Subianto has announced a government plan to renovate at least 60,000 schools across Indonesia next year as part of a nationwide effort to improve education quality. Speaking at the 2025 National Teachers Day event on November 28, he noted that the current pace of upgrades, including the ongoing renovation of 16,000 schools this year, remains insufficient. He instructed the finance ministry to explore possibilities for expanding the programme’s budget beyond the current ceiling of Rp20 trillion (USD 1.2 billion). The government is also advancing its tuition-free Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) initiative for underprivileged children, with 166 schools established so far, serving approximately 16,000 students. Both initiatives form part of the administration’s long-term strategy to strengthen human resources ahead of Indonesia’s 2045 national vision.

Indonesia re-elected to International Maritime Organisation Council

Indonesia has been re-elected as a Category C member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term during the body’s thirty-fourth session in London. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, who led the national delegation, confirmed that Indonesia secured 138 votes, placing fifth among 26 candidates. Category C includes states with significant interests in maritime transport and ensures balanced geographical representation. Purwagandhi said the result reflects Indonesia’s growing role as a global maritime hub and supports President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita mission, prioritising maritime development. He reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, promoting sustainable port development, protecting the marine environment, and supporting seafarers’ welfare as part of global efforts to build a more resilient shipping sector.

But we must also recognise, we must also respect, and we must also guarantee the safety and security of Israel. Only then can we have real peace, no longer hate, suspicion. The only solution is this two-state solution. Two descendants of Abraham must live in reconciliation, peace, and harmony.”

Cabinet shakeup sees four Jokowi-era ministers exit

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conducted a cabinet reshuffle on September 8, replacing five ministers, four of whom previously served under former president Joko Widodo. The ministers removed include Legal and Security Affairs Minister Budi Gunawan, Minister of Cooperatives Budi Arie, Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani. In addition, Abdul Kadir Karding, who formerly held the role of Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, has now joined the Red and White cabinet. Reports suggest his appointment was made with the recommendation of Widodo.

Reshuffle aimed at strengthening Prabowo gov’t, secretary says

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has said that the Cabinet overhaul was made after “various developments, input, and continuous evaluations” carried out by President Prabowo Subianto and his team. Prasetyo said the reshuffle aimed to strengthen the government in meeting its goals. “Hopefully this decision will bring goodness to the nation, state and society,” Prasetyo said. The changes affected six ministries, with five ministers replaced and one new ministry created. The Ministry of Hajj was established to replace the Hajj Organising Agency (BPH) following revisions to the Hajj and Umrah Law.

Prabowo criticises double standards in international law at BRICS meeting

President Prabowo Subianto addressed a virtual BRICS leaders’ meeting on September 8, criticising what he called “double, even triple, standards” and ignorance of international law. The meeting was also attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. Prabowo described the bloc as a pillar of strength, stability and hope, and pledged Indonesia’s support for its growth. He expressed full backing for closer cooperation, praising Xi’s proposals and Brazil’s leadership under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Rupiah drops 1.16% after Prabowo replaces finance minister

The Indonesian rupiah fell 1.16% to Rp16,498 per US dollar ($1.01) in spot market trading on September 10. The currency weakened by 188 points following President Prabowo Subianto’s replacement of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani with Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. Analyst Lukman Leong said the rupiah’s fall was linked to the cabinet change, noting the US dollar index remains under pressure due to expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut.

Indonesia’s youngest minister hit by Cabinet revamp

The Ministry of Youth and Sports was among five ministries reshuffled by President Prabowo Subianto on September 8. Dito Ariotedjo , who previously held the post, was removed from the Red and White Cabinet. He was active in student and youth organisations before joining Golkar. At 33, he became the youngest minister in President Joko Widodo’s cabinet, later serving again under Prabowo before his dismissal.

Flanked by political leaders in Jakarta, Subianto announced that housing allowances would be scrapped and overseas work trips halted.

"They will now immediately revoke several policies in the Indonesian House of Representatives … and follow up on the amount of allowances for members of the House of Representatives and the moratorium on working visits to foreign countries,” he said.

The move follows five days of unrest triggered by reports that all 580 lawmakers had been receiving an allowance nearly ten times the Jakarta minimum wage.

Demonstrations escalated after 21-year-old delivery rider Affan Kurniawan was killed by a police armoured vehicle on Thursday. Authorities have confirmed that seven officers are under investigation.

Subianto urged citizens to keep protests peaceful, warning against violence.

“Voice your aspirations in a proper and peaceful manner, without destruction, without violence, without looting, without riots, without acts that damage public facilities,” he said. “If you damage public facilities, it means you are damaging and wasting the people ’s money.”

Calling for calm, the president appealed for unity.

“I sincerely ask all citizens to trust the government and remain calm. The government that I lead, together with all political parties, including those outside the government, is determined to always fight for the interests of the people and the nation,” he said.

Indonesians are protesting claims that 580 lawmakers have been granted a housing allowance of 50 million rupiah ($3,075) per month since September 2024. Some local media also reported this month that parliamentarians earn upwards of 100 million rupiah ($6,150) a month, including housing allowances.

Activists say the benefit is excessive, amounting to about 20 times the minimum wage in poorer regions of the country.

Although Indonesia is Southeast Asia ’s largest economy, the figure is far higher than the national average income of 3.1 million rupiah ($190).

Banners at the rally called for a 20% to 30% reduction in officials’ pay and the eradication of corruption .

“Hope in the future is that actions like this can improve the welfare of the workers, and the demands of the workers can be realised by the government ,” said Wardono, a protester.

The protests also follow President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to reduce regional funding by 25% as part of austerity measures.

Many demonstrators argue that the funding cuts are in sharp contrast with the generous benefits allocated to parliamentarians.

The Indonesian government has launched the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC) to handle complaints, coordinate enforcement, and raise awareness on digital fraud and illegal financial activities. Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, said the IASC has received 225,000 public reports and blocked 71,000 accounts linked to scams. She added that the ministry will continue blocking suspicious sites, stressing the importance of public vigilance in avoiding online fraud.

Indonesia to establish 500 territorial development battalions by 2029

The Indonesian government has announced plans to establish 500 territorial development battalions across the country within five years, with 100 units to be formed annually. According to the Defence Ministry, the initiative has secured budget support from the Ministry of Finance. Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed that 100 battalions have already been created and emphasised that the units will assist government programmes, particularly in supporting downstreaming and national self-sufficiency efforts.

Prabowo targets zero state budget deficit by 2028

President Prabowo Subianto has pledged to eliminate Indonesia’s state budget (APBN) deficit by 2028, aiming for a surplus between 2027 and 2028. “I want to stand before this assembly and convey that we have succeeded in having a state budget with no deficit whatsoever,” Prabowo said during the 2026 Draft State Budget presentation on August 15. However, economists have questioned the feasibility of the plan. Paramadina University’s Wijayanto Samirin said a deficit-free budget is “unrealistic” given Indonesia’s spending needs on infrastructure, jobs, and human resources. He argued a 2% deficit would be more sustainable. Celios Executive Director Bhima Yudhistira also warned that forcing a surplus could hinder growth, noting that deficits below 3% of GDP are permitted by law.

Prabowo cabinet member arrested in KPK sting ops

Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel “Noel” Ebenezer Gerungan was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in a sting operation on August 21. He was detained at the Ministry of Manpower in Jakarta. KPK deputy chair Fitroh Rohcahyanto confirmed the arrest, saying Noel was implicated in an alleged extortion case but declined to give further details. Noel was appointed deputy minister on October 21 after backing President Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 election. He previously led Jokowi Mania in support of Joko Widodo and later shifted allegiance to Prabowo. Noel, who also joined the Gerindra Party, is the first member of Prabowo’s cabinet to be arrested by the KPK.

The Jolly Roger skull-and-bones design with a straw hat, featured in the series, has been increasingly spotted on trucks, cars and homes.

Officials have warned that the flag, viewed by some as a protest against President Prabowo Subianto’s policies , must not be flown alongside the red-and-white Merah Putih national flag.

Bengawan Aryanto, a 58-year-old entrepreneur, voiced support for the movement.

“I actually wanted to join in. But I had a lot to think about. Still, I think it’s good, it’s creative. And if I get the chance, I’ll wear a One Piece t-shirt, drink One Piece coffee, and even raise the One Piece flag as a form of protest against the government, which isn’t doing well right now,” he said.

Amnesty International Indonesia has questioned the legal basis for banning the flag.

“Has he incited hatred based on religion , ethnicity, race, intergroup relations, national origin or sexual orientation? Is he inciting discrimination on these grounds? Is he propagating a war? For example, of a state or an armed group? If not, then it cannot be banned,” said Usman Hamid, its executive director.

Hamid also noted symbolic parallels between the One Piece flag and Indonesia’s own.

“If we connect it with Indonesia’s independence, on August 17, the spirit of One Piece is the same as that of the Merah Putih : fighting oppression, declaring independence and freedom, and striving for justice and the removal of all restraints,” he said.

The One Piece manga, created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, follows the adventures of a band of pirates in search of a legendary treasure. It has become one of the best-selling comics of all time and has a massive global fan base, with its Jolly Roger emblem recognised worldwide.

Nusantara development to accelerate, not halt

Development of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, will proceed without any moratorium, with three years remaining before the target to relocate the seat of government to the city of East Kalimantan, said Nusantara authority chief Basuki Hadimuljono. President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the acceleration of Nusantara's development, which already features a presidential palace and is expected to house the legislature and judiciary buildings by 2028. Around 5,000 people are working on Nusantara, which is intended to be a green and sustainable city, in contrast to the densely populated capital, Jakarta.

Trump’s tariff deal ‘not win-win’ for Indonesia — analyst

US President Donald Trump’s intimidation tactics toward President Prabowo Subianto have been effective in securing a lopsided trade agreement against Indonesia, an analyst said ahead of the Aug. 7 implementation of the deal. In a podcast quoted by Suara on Aug. 4, Syahganda Nainggolan of the Sabang-Merauke Circle Public Research Institute said that, unlike with Europe, Indonesia’s trade agreement with the US is not a “win-win situation.” This follows Prabowo’s move to remove tariffs on nearly all US goods, while Trump agreed only to reduce tariffs on Indonesian products to 19% from 32%.

Megawati urges democratic party to support Prabowo, stay critical

Former Indonesian president and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri has urged support for the administration of President Prabowo Subianto, but reminded party members to remain critical of policies that may harm the public. PDIP was the ruling party when former president Joko Widodo was still in power. However, Widodo backed Gerindra Party’s Prabowo Subianto, now the Indonesian president, in the 2024 elections. Soekarnoputri was Indonesia’s president from 2001 to 2004.

Forest fires in West Kalimantan reportedly under control

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that all fire hotspots in West Kalimantan have been extinguished as of August 2. BNPB Chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto said they deployed air patrols and cloud seeding flights between July 4 and August 2, dispersing over 35 tonnes of seeding material. Authorities warned the public to remain alert as the dry season continues. While the situation’s now under control, Suharyanto urged continued vigilance as the dry season peaks.

Illegal imports drive Indonesian textile sector decline

Indonesia’s textile and filament yarn industry is under pressure due to illegal imports from China and the government’s rejection of the Anti-Dumping Import Duty (BMAD). Farhan Aqil of the Indonesian Filament Fibre and Yarn Producers Association (APSyFI) said the rejection of BMAD has led to factory closures and discouraged foreign investors despite earlier signs of interest. Additionally, the group reported that filament yarn imports have risen by up to 300% since 2017.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday, July 15, announced that the United States will impose a 19% tariff on goods imported from Indonesia under a new trade agreement.

The new agreement with the Southeast Asian country comes just days after Trump announced a 30% tariff on EU exports, starting August 1.

Speaking outside the Oval Office, Trump stated, “We have full access to Indonesia, everything. As you know, Indonesia is very strong on copper, but we have full access to everything. We will pay no tariffs.”

He added, “They are giving us access into Indonesia, which we never had. That's probably the biggest part of the deal. And the other part is they are going to pay 19% and we are going to pay nothing.”

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, just 2 days ago, signed a separate free trade agreement with the European Union. That agreement, known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), was concluded after a decade of negotiations.

Prabowo, speaking from Brussels, described CEPA as “not only about trade, it is about fairness, respect, and building a strong future together” for Indonesians.

Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, is a major copper producer , ranking fifth globally in 2024 with 1.1 million metric tons of copper output. The country surpassed both the United States and Russia in production, reinforcing its role in the global copper market.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, EU President Ursula von der Leyen said the trade deal titled Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is an opportunity for the automotive and agricultural industries to grow.

"There's a lot of untouched potential in our trade relationship, and therefore, this agreement comes at the right time because the new agreement will open new markets," she said during the joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The EU president asserted that after 10 long years of talking with Indonesia, this is the best deal for both Europeans and Indonesians.

“After 10 years of negotiations, we have made a breakthrough. This new trade agreement will open up great opportunities for both our people ,” she added.

President Subianto, who represents over 280 million Indonesians, also shared that “For Indonesia, CEPA is not only about trade; it is about fairness, respect, and building a strong future together. The agreement must support our efforts to grow our industries, create jobs, and strengthen our sustainable development goals."

The trade agreement comes just a day after US President Donald Trump announced 30% tariffs on EU exports, which will start on August 1.

Prabowo to visit Russia and speak at SPIEF 2025

Indonesian member of parliament Farah Puteri Nahlia stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Russia on June 19–20, 2025, and his participation as keynote speaker at the 2025 St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), represent a strategic move to strengthen Indonesia’s global standing and stimulate economic opportunities. She emphasised that the direct invitation reflects growing international recognition of Indonesia's role in global affairs and expressed hope that the bilateral meeting will advance comprehensive cooperation with Russia.

Rejection of plan to shrink subsidised house sizes

The Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) has formally opposed the government's proposal to reduce the size of subsidised houses to 18 square meters or less. IAI Chairman Georgius Budi Yulianto stated that such a reduction would severely limit physical and social mobility and violate existing architectural and health standards. He emphasised that a 14-square-metre unit for an entire family is inadequate for basic movement and interaction. He also cited international standards, including UN-Habitat's recommendation of 9 square metres of urban green space per person and the WHO’s 10 square metres benchmark for public open space.

Target for forming 80,000 village cooperatives achieved

Indonesia’s Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs has announced the successful formation of 80,000 Red and White Village/Sub-district Cooperatives (Kopdes/Kel) nationwide. Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Cooperatives, confirmed the achievement in a written statement issued on Tuesday, June 17. The minister credited collaborative efforts as key to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable village economic ecosystem.

Indonesia to use mixed approach for giant sea wall project

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), stated that the country’s giant sea wall will not be constructed entirely from concrete. The project will adopt an integrative approach, using concrete embankments only in selected areas. Natural solutions, such as mangrove planting, will be applied where feasible. AHY explained that this strategy aligns with international best practices and supports sustainable development. He made the remarks at the Mitra Praja Utama Regional Communication Forum in Central Jakarta on June 17.

Highest monthly trade surplus since February 2023 recorded

Indonesia posted a trade surplus of $4.9 billion in May, based on preliminary customs data, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati . Exports totalled $25.3 billion, while imports reached $20.4 billion. Final data from Statistics Indonesia is expected on July 1. If unchanged, the May surplus would be the country’s largest in over two years. April’s surplus was $160 million.

He warned of the dangers posed by foreign influences, urging the nation to remain vigilant against external provocations.

"Once again, I call on all Indonesians to stay united. Differences should not become a source of conflict. That is exactly what foreign powers hope for," Prabowo's statement emphasised.

He reminded the audience that Indonesia's long and troubled history with colonisation illustrates ongoing efforts by other nations to create discord.

The minister asserted that some foreign entities continue to finance non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that stir conflict within the nation. "They came for hundreds of years, and they still provoke us. With money, they fund NGOs to incite division," he said.

Despite this, Prabowo clarified that his remarks were not intended to foster animosity towards other countries. Instead, he aimed to alert citizens about potential manipulation. "I am not urging Indonesians to distrust other countries. But we must not allow ourselves to be manipulated," he explained.

He also evoked the wisdom of Indonesia’s founding leaders to underpin his message, encouraging citizens to navigate today’s global challenges responsibly. "We recall what our founding fathers said: the Indonesian people must stand on their own feet," he concluded, reinforcing the need for self-reliance amidst international pressures.

The government plans to establish at least 100 public schools equipped with dormitory facilities, targeting students from the country’s most economically vulnerable groups.

Speaking during a plenary cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace on May 5, President Prabowo said the program will begin this year, with the initial phase expected to roll out in July.

“I received a report from the Minister of Social Affairs, who just returned from Central Java,” the president said, “because in the near future we will also open at least 100 boarding schools addressed to our brothers and sisters, our people who are in the lowest economic group, decile one and decile two."

The program , referred to as the “People’s School” initiative, aims to ensure greater equity in education by providing comprehensive support for underprivileged students. President Prabowo emphasised that the schools will cater to elementary, junior high, and high school levels, offering not only free education but also residential facilities to support students from remote or underserved areas.

He praised the swift coordination between ministries, particularly the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, for accelerating the groundwork needed to launch the program.

“Back and forth I say don't be forced, do it, but we don't have to chase the important dates we do, he noted." But they are sure they want to get the best results quickly, please. But in the end, I think this will be felt very by the people at the bottom."

The initiative has received strong backing from local governments, with more than 200 regents and mayors reportedly offering land for the school construction. According to the president, plots ranging from 5 to 8 hectares have been allocated across various regions.

The government is now finalising the design and budgeting for the schools, with completion expected in the next two to three weeks. Prabowo described the planned construction as “economical but good,” indicating a focus on cost-effective yet high-quality infrastructure .

Beyond improving educational access, the dormitory-based schools are intended to support long-term goals such as boosting social mobility and addressing deep-rooted regional disparities in education quality.

Clean energy and infrastructure

Indonesia and Japan have reinforced their partnership in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) framework, marked by the financial close of the 80-megawatt Muara Labuh Geothermal Power Plant in West Sumatra, which is set to begin construction and target commercial operations by early 2027. This was formalised during a signing ceremony in Jakarta on May 5, 2025, between Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who serves as Japan’s special envoy to AZEC.

Chinese labour in Indonesia

As Indonesia and China mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, concerns over the growing presence of Chinese foreign workers (TKA) in Indonesia have surfaced as a major point of contention, according to experts at a seminar hosted by the Paramadina Public Policy Institute (PPPI) and the Indonesian Sinology Forum (FSI) in Jakarta on May 5. Academics and policy analysts stressed that the issue reflects broader global anxieties, also seen in regions like Africa and Latin America.

GDP growth slowest in more than three years

Indonesia's economy grew by 4.87% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, marking its weakest pace since Q3 2021 and slightly below analysts’ expectations of 4.91%, according to official data released on May 5. The slowdown, down from 5.02% in the previous quarter, reflects mounting economic pressures, including sluggish global trade, weaker domestic demand, and tighter fiscal conditions. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP contracted by 0.98%. Despite Ramadan and Eid festivities in March, household spending—accounting for over half of GDP—rose only 4.89%, the slowest in five quarters. President Prabowo Subianto’s goal to boost growth to 8% over his term faces increasing headwinds, including potential U.S. tariffs and global economic uncertainty.

Worldcoin Crypto Project

Indonesia has suspended the Worldcoin project, an iris-scanning cryptocurrency initiative co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, amid growing concerns over personal data use. The move follows public complaints about suspicious activity, with authorities citing the need to investigate potential privacy violations. Worldcoin , launched in 2023, uses biometric scans to create a "World ID" that verifies human identity for digital transactions. While the company claims the data is encrypted and secure, similar concerns have led to scrutiny in countries like Hong Kong, Kenya, Spain, and Portugal.

100 boarding schools for low-income students

President Prabowo Subianto has confirmed plans to launch a national “people’s school” program with a boarding system aimed at supporting children from Indonesia’s lowest-income groups. In a cabinet meeting on May 5, 2025, he stated that at least 100 boarding schools will be built across various regions, with the initial rollout expected in July. The program , designed by the Ministers of Social Affairs and Education, seeks to improve educational equity and provide opportunities for children in economic deciles one and two.

Potential layoffs due to US tariffs

Following the announcement of a 32% tariff on Indonesian exports by the US, up to 50,000 Indonesian workers may face layoffs, prompting President Prabowo to instruct cabinet members to explore employment measures urgently. According to VN Express , this assessment was shared by Vice Chair of Indonesia’s National Economic Council, Mari Elka Pangestu, highlighting ongoing negotiations and various initiatives to mitigate impacts on the labour-intensive textile and shrimp processing industries.

Concerns over military role in governance

Amid concerns about Indonesia regressing to authoritarianism reminiscent of Suharto's regime, critics are alarmed at President Prabowo's moves to expand the military's role in governance. Human rights advocates emphasise a collective trauma over past abuses as public protests arise against new legislation, as reported by the Economic Times . Despite this, Prabowo maintains that limitations are in place, while fears of media suppression and intimidation grow due to recent incidents involving local journalists.

Withdrawal from $7.7 billion EV battery project

A South Korean consortium led by LG has decided to withdraw its $7.7 billion electric vehicle battery supply chain project in Indonesia, citing changes in the industrial landscape and reduced global EV demand. Despite this exit, LG Energy Solution plans to maintain its existing operations in Indonesia, including a joint venture with Hyundai for battery production, reports Social News XYZ .

Rising cocaine use reported in Indonesia

Tempo reports that the Indonesian National Police reported a rising trend in cocaine use, evidenced by a recent seizure of 25 kilogrammes of cocaine in Aceh and North Sumatra. The increase reflects the activity of an international drug distribution network. Despite cocaine's limited distribution due to high costs, arrests in this case indicate growing concerns regarding drug abuse in the country.

First ministerial ‘2+2’ dialogue between Indonesia and China

Indonesia and China are set to hold their first-ever 2+2 ministerial dialogue on April 21 in Beijing, marking a significant step in bilateral relations. This dialogue, which underscores strategic cooperation, follows previous meetings between President Xi Jinping and President Prabowo. The meeting aims to discuss security, political cooperation, and regional collaboration, further solidifying the nations' 75-year diplomatic relationship, reports Antara .

The president was seen in an Instagram video wearing a black hat and shirt, speaking to the public.

He appeared to ask, "Who hasn't received aid from me? What are your needs right now?" His lips moved, and his eyes blinked naturally, making the video seem real. But police later revealed it was a deepfake—a fake video created using artificial intelligence.

People who believed the message were told to contact a WhatsApp number and pay an "administrative fee" of between 250,000 and one million rupiah ($15-$60) to receive government aid. But the aid never came.

Authorities say the scam spread across 20 provinces.

The police arrested a suspect who made 65 million rupiah ($4,000) from the scheme, while another person was also arrested for a similar fraud although police did not reveal how much money was stolen.

Fake videos of high-profile figures, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, have also appeared online.

These scams are widely shared on TikTok and other platforms. One account with 77,000 followers gained 7.5 million views on a fake video of Prabowo giving out money. Another account has posted more than 100 deepfake videos since January.

TikTok removed at least one of these scam videos and said it would continue to take down misleading content.

However, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has not made any comments.

Fact-checkers in Indonesia say deepfake scams are increasing.

"We are finding new fake videos every week because AI tools have become cheaper and easier to use," Aribowo Sasmito, co-founder of fact-checking group Mafindo was quoted by local news sources.

Scams like this are not only happening in Indonesia. Fake videos of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have also been used in similar fraud schemes.

Aribowo warned that fake videos are becoming more realistic. "It is getting harder to tell what is real and what is fake," he said. "The challenge is that these scams are everywhere."

Authorities have urged people to be careful and not trust videos of public figures promising financial aid, as many of them may be scams.

The platform, initially launched in September 2023 for local players, now invites global participation in trading carbon credits.

Carbon credits represent reductions or avoidance of carbon dioxide emissions, allowing companies to offset their emissions to meet regulatory requirements or enhance their environmental credentials.

As one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, Indonesia relies heavily on coal to power its economy. Despite a 2022 multi-billion-dollar partnership with the United States and European nations to transition away from coal, progress has been limited.

President Prabowo Subianto has committed to advancing Indonesia’s carbon neutrality goal by 10 years to 2050 and plans to close hundreds of fossil-fuel power plants by 2040.

Additionally, the government aims to develop over 75 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2040, though specific implementation strategies remain unclear.

Proceeds from carbon credit sales on the exchange are expected to fund these renewable energy and decarbonisation initiatives.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq described the exchange’s expansion as an "important milestone in our collective journey towards a sustainable future."

He assured that the government would guarantee all credits issued on the exchange, implementing stringent measures to prevent double counting of emissions.

The international opening follows new guidelines on carbon credit trade agreed upon during COP29 last year. However, scepticism about the exchange remains.

Fabby Tumiwa, executive director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform, noted that domestic demand for carbon credits had been low, prompting the move to open the market to foreign entities.

"If domestic demand was high, we wouldn't need to open it to foreign entities," Tumiwa told AFP, highlighting concerns about whether projects on the exchange meet the "additionality" standard, which ensures emission reductions would not occur without the credits.

Uncertainties remain about the compatibility of Indonesia’s carbon credits with international standards.

Despite these challenges, initial trading showed activity. The stock exchange reported at least nine transactions on Monday, representing over 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The initiative, a key election promise by President Prabowo Subianto, focuses on providing nutritious meals to schoolchildren, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

“This is historic for Indonesia for the first time conducting a nationwide nutrition programme for toddlers, students, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers,” presidential spokesman Hasan Nasbi stated on Sunday.

The programme includes the operation of at least 190 kitchens run by third-party catering services, including some based in military facilities. These kitchens prepared meals overnight for distribution to beneficiaries.

The government has allocated 10,000 rupiahs (62 US cents) per meal, with a total budget of 71 trillion rupiahs for the 2025 fiscal year. The initiative aims to benefit nearly 83 million people by 2029.

Stunting affects 21.5% of children in Indonesia, a country of approximately 282 million people. The programme aims to reduce this rate to 5% by 2045.

The programme has faced criticism from experts and members of the public since its announcement during the presidential campaign. Jakarta-based nutritionist and doctor Tan Shot Yen highlighted issues with initial trials, which she noted were largely confined to urban areas and lacked public transparency.

“I hope this programme is not just a temporary charitable effort to fulfil political promises,” Yen said, emphasising the need for robust food safety management and transparency to avoid potential hazards such as the inclusion of processed foods like instant noodles and sausages.

Public policy analyst Aditya Alta from the Centre for Indonesian Policy Studies expressed doubts about the programme’s sustainability.

“I am quite pessimistic if everything is shouldered by the central government. Economically, it’s not sustainable,” Alta told AFP.

He added that tackling stunting requires a multidimensional approach.

Prabowo, who assumed office in October, has prioritised addressing malnutrition in Indonesia’s poorest and most remote areas.

He secured a $10 billion deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November to support several sectors, including the free-meal programme.

His administration has emphasised that the initiative is designed to improve quality of life and contribute to economic growth.

Aviation cooperation with France

Indonesia and France have held the 9th Steering Committee meeting to enhance aviation safety through a technical cooperation agreement . The meeting, led by M. Mauludin from Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation, focused on activities involving air transportation standardisation, risk management, and the implementation of a National Aviation Safety Program. It includes collaboration with Airbus and Bureau Veritas. Both parties expressed commitment to improving aviation safety and emphasised the importance of ongoing strategic cooperation. The French government, represented by Thibaut Lallemand, reaffirmed support for Indonesia’s safety monitoring capabilities.

Indonesian medic forced to leave north Gaza

Indonesian medics from the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee were forced to leave the Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza by Israeli troops after receiving warnings. The team, which arrived on December 1, was the first emergency medical group at the facility in 60 days, as the hospital had been cut off from supplies and endured multiple Israeli strikes. Following their departure, the hospital's director reported a critical shortage of medical personnel and supplies, with scores of casualties from ongoing attacks. The team evacuated to the nearby Indonesia Hospital amid ongoing bombings, hoping for the safe evacuation of remaining patients. Since the start of the conflict in October, the Israeli military's actions have led to over 44,600 reported deaths and numerous injuries in Gaza.

Devastating landslides, flash floods on Java island

In Indonesia's Java island, torrential rains have triggered devastating landslides and flash floods, leading to the recovery of 10 bodies, including three children, with two individuals still missing. Over 170 villages in Sukabumi district have been affected, forcing more than 3,000 residents into temporary shelters. The extreme weather has destroyed 31 bridges, damaged 81 roads, and flooded around 1,170 houses.

Opposition wins Jakarta governorship

Opposition candidate Pramono Anung won the Jakarta governor race with 50.07% of the vote, securing victory for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, the country's sole opposition party. This unexpected win allows the party to control Jakarta, which represents one-fifth of Indonesia's economic output. The result is a setback for Prabowo, who has just begun his five-year term and is preparing to implement key national programs.

Repatriation of death-row convict to the Philippines

Indonesia will repatriate death-row convict Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines after years of international pressure. Indonesia's law minister, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated the decision follows a meeting with Philippine officials and clarified that this does not involve clemency or a pardon. Veloso was sentenced to death in 2010 for attempting to smuggle drugs, but her supporters claim she was a victim of human trafficking. The responsibility for her rehabilitation will now rest with the Philippine government.

Indonesia's Maritime Security Agency reported that the Chinese vessel first entered the disputed waters on Monday, October 21, interrupting a seismic survey conducted by the state-owned oil company, Pertamina.

When contacted by Indonesian patrol ships, the Chinese crew claimed the area was under Beijing's jurisdiction . Despite these assertions, Indonesian coast guard and navy ships managed to drive the Chinese vessel away.

This was further asserted by the country's foreign ministry when its spokesman, Lin Jian told reporters on Thursday that "China's coast guard vessels carried out routine patrols in waters under China's jurisdiction in accordance with international and domestic law. China is willing to strengthen communication and consultation with Indonesia through diplomatic channels to properly resolve maritime issues between the two countries."

The Chinese ship re-entered the area on Wednesday, prompting another intervention by Indonesian forces.

This series of encounters highlight s Indonesia's increasing vigilance in protecting its maritime rights, especially under the leadership of newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto, who has pledged to bolster the defence of Indonesian territory.

The South China Sea remains a strategic and economically significant area, with multiple Southeast Asian nations contesting China's expansive claims. Indonesia, while not having a formal territorial dispute with China, has become increasingly protective of its rights in the region.

Swordfish kills surfer

The recent surfing tragedy that claimed the life of Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini has raised awareness about the unpredictable dangers of ocean sports. Surfing off Masokut Island in Indonesia, Manfrini was fatally injured when a swordfish impaled her in a freak accident. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries, causing an outpouring of grief and tributes from her community in Italy, Fox News reported.

New state investment firm

In the realm of Indonesian politics, President Prabowo Subianto's recent initiatives mark a significant shift in the country's investment landscape. He is set to introduce the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency, inspired by Singapore's Temasek. This agency aims to consolidate state investments across various sectors, enhancing the government's oversight and potentially boosting investor confidence, Tuoitre News reported. Prabowo's appointment of Muliaman Hadad to lead this new agency reflects a strategic move towards policy continuity with the previous administration.

Prabowo swears in large cabinet

Furthermore, President Prabowo's cabinet has expanded, incorporating over ten new ministers compared to his predecessor's administration. This coalition, involving 12 political parties, holds a significant majority in parliament, which could streamline legislative processes. The new structure introduces 48 portfolios, enhancing the government's capacity to address various sectors effectively. According to news agency NHK World , observers note that this adjustment could serve to consolidate Prabowo's authority and accelerate the implementation of his policies.

Bilateral trade

On the economic front, Indonesia and Vietnam are set to enhance bilateral trade, aiming for a target of $18 billion. The focus will be on sectors such as the Halal industry, the digital economy, and the promotion of electric vehicle development, VOV World reported. Conversations between the two nations' leaders underscore the importance of robust cooperation in trade, agriculture, and regional security, all under the banner of ASEAN unity.

Earthquake

Lastly, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake rattled Tapat Island, affecting approximately 50,000 residents. Fortunately, the earthquake did not cause injuries or property damage, and a tsunami was ruled out. However, the event serves as a reminder of Indonesia's geological volatility, as the country frequently experiences seismic activity, evidenced by a spate of quakes on the same day, according to the Daily Mail's report.

Prabowo calls for unity

Prabowo Subianto, the president-elect of Indonesia, has vowed to serve all Indonesians and emphasised the importance of unity. His commitment came during a speech delivered at a ceremony on April 24, where he was officially declared the winner of the presidential election held in February. NHK World reported that Prabowo was accompanied by his vice president-elect, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is coincidentally the son of the current President, Joko Widodo. The country's Constitutional Court dismissed claims of election irregularities raised by the losing candidates, paving the way for Prabowo's inauguration in October.

Tsunami risks

Following a few preliminary warnings, Mount Ruang, a volcano on the Indonesian island of North Sulawesi, experienced several intense eruptions on Wednesday, April 17th. In response, authorities raised the alert level to the highest degree, leading to the evacuation of thousands of individuals to safety. The eruptions have rendered certain sections of the volcano unstable, heightening the potential for a tsunami. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire renowned for its geological activity, faces these risks. According to Weather Radar , Mount Ruang's eruption 150 years ago triggered a devastating tsunami that claimed 400 lives.

Money laundering

In a recent report from Antara , President Widodo underscored the concerning magnitude of illicit financial activities during his speech at the 22nd Anniversary of the National Movement for Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Prevention. Indonesia has become a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to address issues of money laundering and terrorism financing. There is an urgent call for enhanced cooperation among law enforcement entities to tackle evolving techniques of money laundering, with particular attention on enforcing the Asset Forfeiture Bill to identify and confiscate criminal assets.

Water management

An expert from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has stated that Indonesia will showcase a local cultural perspective on water management at the upcoming 10th World Water Forum (WWF). “Indonesia’s success in encouraging water management through the local cultural approach can be used for learning by the global communities,” Expert Staff of Public Works and Public Housing Minister for Technology, Industry, and Environment Endra S. Atmawidjaja told Antara on Wednesday, April 24. The country's local wisdom practices have proven effective in addressing the water crisis and can serve as a model for global communities. The forum is expected to foster cross-country collaboration to address water-related challenges and Indonesia is ready to lead and push for sustainable water management.

Indonesia discusses blue food

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, has engaged in discussions with Singapore regarding potential partnerships in agriculture, blue food, and cross-border carbon capture storage (CCS). Antara reports Minister Wong's interest in initiating an early study for this collaboration. Pandjaitan also highlighted the opportunity for developing Bali as a wellness tourism destination. This meeting underscores the growing cooperative ties between Indonesia and Singapore.

What has happened today?

An Indonesian court on Monday rejected petitions from two candidates seeking a re-run after their loss in the country’s presidential elections in February. The constitutional court ruled that there was no evidence of systematic fraud or favouritism towards the winning candidate, Defence Minister, Prabowo Subianto. The court rejected the plaintiffs’ petitions entirely citing no legal basis.

Who brought the case?

Ex-Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo separately challenged the electoral win of Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, citing state interference and systematic fraud among other reasons. They alleged that state bodies, regional officials and social assistance had been mobilised to sway polls in the leading candidate’s favour. They also complained about the participation of the current president, Joko Widodo’s 36-year-old son in the elections. Five judges ruled to reject both petitions, while three gave dissenting opinions.

What happened in the election?

Prabowo won the first-round election on February 14, comfortably passing the 50% mark needed for a victory without a runoff. He polled 58.61% of the votes, putting him ahead of his contenders, Anies who received 24.9%, and Ganjar who received 16.5%. Incumbent President Joko Widodo, who is also known as Jokowi was accused by critics in the election run-up of abusing his position to favour Prabowo, to preserve his legacy after a decade in charge of Southeast Asia's biggest economy. The chief justice at the time was Jokowi's brother-in-law, who was later reprimanded by an ethics panel for allowing intervention from an unspecified "external party". He was barred from involvement in election-related cases. The judges said on Monday there was no evidence of nepotism or presidential intervention concerning that decision.

What happens next?

The ruling paves the way for Prabowo to assume leadership as president. He is scheduled to take office in October, replacing his predecessor President Joko Widodo.

The presidential palace respected the ruling and will help support the transition of the president-elect, palace spokesperson Ari Dwipayana was quoted as saying.

Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia's president-elect, faced a legal challenge on March 27 as Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan, the losing candidates in last month's presidential election, contested his victory in the Constitutional Court.

They alleged state interference in the electoral process and called for Prabowo's disqualification.

Prabowo's legal team on March 28 responded, arguing that any attempt to overturn his win would undermine the people's fundamental right to vote.

Otto Hasibuan, one of Prabowo's lawyers, maintained that there were no irregularities during the February 14 election and suggested that administrative complaints should be directed to the election watchdog rather than the Constitutional Court.

The official announcement of Prabowo's victory, alongside his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of outgoing President Joko Widodo, was made by the national poll body just the previous week.

However, the legal dispute continued as the opposing candidates' teams also sought the disqualification of Gibran as a vice-presidential candidate.

The official tally of the election commission confirms the unofficial results released by independent pollsters last month.

Prabowo is expected to take over from outgoing President Joko Widodo in October. He won on promises of continuing the legacies of President Widodo, known as Jokowi, who is very popular in the country.
Prabowo’s running mate, Jokowi's 36-year-old son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is set to become vice president.

Death cases due to cancer

The Indonesian Oncology Association said that 242,988 deaths in Indonesia were attributed to cancer, largely due to delays in treatment and early detection. This information was shared during a discussion forum held to commemorate World Cancer Day titled "Close the Care Gap: Bring Attention to a Higher Level." Cosphiadi Irawan, the General Chair of the Indonesian Oncology Association, highlighted data from the Global Burden Cancer (Globocan) report of 2022, which estimated 19.9 million new cancer cases worldwide with a death toll of 9.7 million, local media Berita Satu reported.

Prices of commodities surge after elections

After the 2024 election, prices of various essential community needs in several traditional markets in Kebumen, Central Java, surged. Necessities experienced price hikes of up to 100 percent. At Tumenggungan Market on February 18, notable increases were observed in curly chillies and red cayenne peppers, reports local media Kompas . Wijiati, a trader at the market, attributed the spike to a possible shortage in the supply of goods due to farmers' participation in the general election, leading to heightened demand and scarcity.

Re-election

Four polling stations in the northern Prohibition area, TPS 01, 02, 05, and 06, conducted re-voting for the 2024 election due to flooding on the day of simultaneous voting, February 14, reports local media Republika . The Indonesian Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) said that 2,413 polling stations were eligible for re-voting due to various issues such as natural disasters, floods, the presence of unregistered voters, incorrect distribution of ballot papers, and the detection of violations.

Prabowo dominates official vote count

In Indonesia's 2024 presidential election, Prabowo Subianto, alongside running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, maintained a commanding lead in the official vote count by the General Election Commission (KPU). With over 65 percent of the votes tallied from more than 820,000 polling stations as of Saturday at 02:00 PM WIB, Prabowo holds approximately 57.52 percent of the votes, positioning him for a potential single-round victory, reports local media Jakarta Globe . His closest competitors, Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar secured 24.6 percent of the votes, while Ganjar Pranowo and Mohammad Mahfud MD attained 17.89 percent.

Election officials dead

As of February 17, 2024, 57 election officials from various groups, including the Voting Organizing Group (KPPS), community protection, and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), have passed away. Data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) showed that the deaths comprised 29 KPPS members, 10 members of Community Protection (Linmas), nine witnesses, six officers, two voting committee members, and one member of Bawaslu. The officers' ages varied, with the primary causes of death being heart disease, accidents, acute respiratory disorders (ARDS), and hypertension, local media Republika reported.

Prabowo extends poll surge ahead of Indonesian election

The current defence minister has been on a steady upward trajectory for the past three months, according to a poll of polls assembled by The Economist magazine

The Economist offers a detailed timeline comparing the polling trajectories of the three main Indonesian candidates: Prabowo Subianto, Anies Baswedan, and Ganjar Pranowo. Prabowo’s polling uplift puts him on track to reach the crucial 50% mark that he needs to win without a run-off.

Since appointing President Joko Widodo’s son – Gibran Rakabuming Raka – as his running-mate in October, the former general’s popularity has surged. His support also increased after strong performances in heated presidential debates on December 12 and January 7.

The economist poll of polls indicates Pabowo's vote share could be as high as 52% while his opponents Anies Baswedan, a former Jakarta governor, and Ganjar Pranowo, who previously ran the province of central Java, split the rest equally.

While Widodo cannot stand, having reached his two-term limit, his legacy remains a key factor in the votes. Indonesians seem willing to reward the current president's preferred successor Prabowo for the robust economic performance the country has enjoyed since emerging from COVID. Even among tens of millions of first-time voters contemplating their choices.

Prabowo has sought to soften the tough image he established leading the country's military in order to win over tens of millions of younger voters who will go to the polls for the first time this year. He has used his Instagram account, which has almost 9 million followers to offer a behind-the-scenes look at his campaign.

Prabowo’s political journey is a case study of resilience. Despite facing multiple allegations throughout his extensive career, his critics have never managed to end his political career. Over time, he has assumed various roles, transitioning from a military strongman to a defender of Islamic values and even a global peacemaker. As the election approaches, Prabowo has capitalised on his experience to assume a grandfatherly image that appeals to Indonesia’s Generation Z and millennial voters.

In early 2008, Prabowo established the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). In the 2009 presidential election, he ran unsuccessfully for the vice-presidency as Megawati Sukarnoputri’s running mate. He contested the 2014 presidential election and was defeated by Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo. He made another unsuccessful run for the presidency in 2019, losing again against Widodo. He contested the results of the election, however he joined Widodo’s cabinet as Minister of Defence in 2019. As a minister, Prabowo aimed to strengthen Indonesia’s military by acquiring newer fighter aircraft and new vessels and reinforce Indonesia’s leading role in Southeast Asia.

Prabowo promised to be a president that will prioritize and significantly strengthen the defence and security of the country. He declared his intentions to usher in a new era for Indonesia, a famously non-aligned nation, during a time of profound global crises disrupting the international order and ongoing tensions between the US and China, which pose a threat to regional stability. Enhancing security is a cornerstone of Prabowo’s platform. His prior role as Minister of Defence showcased his commitment to a proficient and well-equipped military and security forces. This dedication is set to continue, with a focus on heightened investment in enhancing the capacities, capabilities, and modernization of Indonesia’s armed forces and security forces.

Prabowo’s perspective on security extends beyond military and defence investments. While acknowledging the importance of maintaining a robust military for defending Indonesia and addressing present security challenges, he advocates for a more comprehensive strategy. Prabowo thinks Indonesia need to achieve self-reliance in essential areas such as food, energy, and water. Sustainability, in his view, necessitates an expansion of the country’s industrial base, substantial investments in lifting people out of poverty, and ensuring access to fundamental elements such as education, healthcare, and opportunities. Additionally, fostering harmony among all ethnic and religious groups is deemed crucial for promoting the cohesion of Indonesian society. In the international area, Prabowo is committed to consolidate Indonesia’s role as a champion of the Global South and engaging actively in international forums such as the UN or ASEAN.

With the election scheduled less than a month away, the political fever is growing to a climax. Prabowo's opponents split around half of the predicted vote between them, meaning he will be hoping to wrap up the contest in a single round. Subianto appears to maintain a strong lead, potentially exceeding the margin necessary for a first-round victory. This situation has shifted the focus to Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who are now primarily competing for second place.
