Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe produced a landmark performance, becoming the first man to run a marathon under two hours in official race conditions, crossing the line in 1:59:30. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha followed closely in 1:59:41, while Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo completed an all-African podium .

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa broke her own world record with a time of 2:15:41, finishing ahead of Kenya’s Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei, another clean sweep for African athletes.

When it comes to marathon running at the highest level, Africa, particularly East African runners, has dominated the London Marathon for more than two decades.

Athletes like Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge, a four-time London winner widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner in history, helped cement that legacy. Year after year, the winners’ lists have been overwhelmingly African

First held in 1981, the London Marathon has grown into one of the world’s most prestigious long-distance races, alongside events in Boston, New York, Berlin, Chicago, and Tokyo.

Founded by former Olympic champion Chris Brasher and athlete John Disley, the race was inspired by the inclusive spirit of the New York Marathon, combining elite competition with mass participation and charity fundraising.

Today, it attracts more than 50,000 runners annually and raises hundreds of millions of pounds for charitable causes, making it as much a social event as a sporting spectacle.

The figure surpasses the region’s previous record of 34 participants at the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, signalling a gradual expansion of winter sport participation in a part of the world better known for summer competitions.

Brazil leads the regional contingent with 14 competitors, the largest ever for the South American nation at a Winter Olympics, competing in five sports including alpine skiing, skeleton and bobsleigh. Argentina follows with around eight athletes in events such as alpine and cross-country skiing, luge and more. Mexico is also notable with several competitors, including figure skater Donovan Carrillo, who previously helped break a decades-long absence in Olympic figure skating finals and continues to be a focal point of Latin America’s winter sport narrative.

Smaller delegations from Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay and Puerto Rico round out the Latin American presence, each represented by one or two athletes in sports ranging from skeleton and cross-country skiing to alpine events. Colombia, for example, fields athletes in both cross-country skiing and skeleton, reflecting the broadening base of participation across the region.

For many of these competitors, reaching the Winter Olympics involves extensive preparation abroad, often training in snowy climates far from home while balancing limited local infrastructure and funding. Carrillo’s journey, training in Canada under elite coaching and returning as one of the region’s most visible competitors, illustrates both the challenges and aspirations of Latin American winter athletes.

The record delegation comes as the Games bring together more than 3,500 athletes from 93 nations, competing for medals in 16 disciplines, including figure skating, alpine skiing and luge. Latin America ’s expanded representation, although still modest compared with traditional winter sport powerhouses, reflects increasing ambition and investment in non-traditional sporting arenas.

While no Latin American competitor has yet won a Winter Olympic medal, the milestone of sending a record number of athletes in 2026 carries symbolic significance for the region. It highlights not only personal achievements but also the potential for broader development of winter sports culture across countries historically associated with warm climates. As the Milan-Cortina Games unfold, Latin American athletes continue to capture attention, fostering inspiration for future generations and signalling that ice and snow have a place in the region’s sporting story.

The competition, held over six days, brought together the leading amputee football clubs from across South America , with teams from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru and Chile taking part.

The final showcased the growing level of the sport in the region, with Ourinhos building on a strong semi-final win over São Bento de Sorocaba to impose a disciplined and efficient game plan. Esperia, who had knocked out Argentina’s Rosario Central earlier in the tournament, defended resolutely but was eventually beaten as Ourinhos converted their opportunities.

Players and staff highlighted the broader significance of the victory, stressing the role of sport in rehabilitation and inclusion for athletes who have lost a limb through accidents or illness. The tournament also marked a wider landmark, establishing the Americas as the second continent after Europe to stage an international amputee football club competition, under the umbrella of the World Amputee Football Federation.

The showcase traces Neymar’s journey from his early days at Santos to his rise as a global football icon, reflecting both his sporting achievements and his cultural influence.

Visitors move through displays featuring shirts, trophies, boots and personal items linked to key milestones in his career. Beyond traditional memorabilia, the exhibition invites fans to engage with interactive installations designed to recreate defining moments on the pitch, blending sport with immersive storytelling.

Organisers say the timing is significant as Brazil approaches a World Cup year, when football and national identity often take centre stage. The exhibition’s title frames Neymar as “great by nature,” a reference to both his natural talent and his long-standing presence in Brazilian football culture.

The event also highlights Pacaembu Stadium’s transformation into a cultural and entertainment space. Part of the proceeds will support the Instituto Neymar Jr, extending the exhibition’s impact beyond football and linking it to social initiatives.

What we know

What they said

WADA Director General, Olivier Niggli, expressed disappointment over the development, stressing the importance of uniform accountability across the anti-doping system. “It is always disappointing when a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code is alleged as non-compliant,” he said. “However, it is crucially important for the global system that Anti-Doping Organisations are held to the same high standards that we expect from athletes,” Reuters quotes. WADA further stated that the decision, including all its consequences, will automatically take effect on 2 October 2025 unless it is formally challenged before that date. Niggli added that WADA remains committed to working with non-compliant organisations to help them improve and regain compliance, for the benefit of athletes both domestically and internationally.

Welcome back to World Reframed , where we look beyond the headlines and into the heart of the Global South. This week’s episode ranges from a superhuman sports feat in Cairo to an invasive lizard in Malaysia with some heavyweight geopolitics, energy, and economics in between.

Heavyweight hero

We start with a scene that looks straight out of a superhero movie. In Cairo, professional wrestler Ashraf Kabonga attempted a mammoth stunt of pulling 20 cars, weighing a total of about 29 tonnes.

Each vehicle weighed up to 1,650 kg. The previous world record stood at 15 cars, set by Canadian strongman Kevin Fast back in 2014. Kabonga dragged his line of cars a full 10 metres, surpassing Guinness’ requirement. The crowd went wild.

While the record is still awaiting official confirmation, Kabonga is already being hailed as a national hero.

Beyond Petroleum?

From raw muscle to raw materials—BP made several big announcements last week including the news of its biggest oil find in 25 years. The discovery off Brazil is part of a new strategy of returning to the formula that made the company a global energy giant.

As World Reframed ’s Sasha Barrow reported, the company has faced increasing shareholder pressure, leading to an executive overhaul. Out went the sustainability visionaries, in came the profit maximisers.

But there’s a deeper question: When fossil fuels are extracted in the Global South, do climate goals suddenly become optional?

Countries like Brazil, Nigeria, and Guyana are rich in resources, but the profits often head north. Meanwhile, the emissions are global. It’s a contradiction that exposes the climate movement’s North-South divide.

Splitting BRICS

As has been widely reported, new US tariffs are shaking up international trade. But the key to Trump's latest moves are an attempt to target Brazil, India with duties of 50%.

Trump’s trade strategy has had limited effect on China, a tech powerhouse that’s too entrenched in the global economy. It's stranglehold on critical raw materials means it has a kill switch for large swathes of the US economy. With Russia is economically isolated, he has little leverage there. That leaves other BRICS countries to feel the squeeze.

But India and Brazil are not easy targets. Both have charismatic and confident leaders with strong powerbases. And both have domestic reasons to put up a fight.

India continues to buy oil from Russia, despite increasingly strong hints from America that it should stop. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also resisted pressure to open up Indian agriculture to American imports. Instead, he’s heading to traditional rival China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit at the end of the month

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva isn’t backing down either. He’s launched scathing critiques of Trump, and positioned himself as a champion of the global pushback against Washington. And back home this plays into his bitter campaign against predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. By accusing his rival of treacherously undermining Brazil's economy, Lula can build political capital. Yet with an export-driven economy, Lula risks facts on the ground going against him.

The broader takeaway? US coercion may no longer carry the weight it once did. As nations look for alternatives, a multipolar world takes shape.

An unwelcome guest

In a surreal scene on the island of Manukan, Malaysia, a large monitor lizard crashed through a hotel ceiling. Chaos ensued as hotel security tried to wrestle it into submission.

Eventually, the hotel team managed to coax the creature out of a fire exit.

Military and trade power

And finally a couple of highlights from World Visualized and The World in Maps .

Europe v Asia

According to the Global Firepower Index, in a straight fight between Europe and Asia, there's no doubt who would win. The strongest militaries in Asia, led by Russia, China, rank well ahead of most European powers.

The index has its critics as it tends to favour sheer numbers over skills, training and technology so nations with large populations and resource bases often rank higher. Still, it’s a stark reminder of Europe’s growing military dependence on the US.

China’s tight embrace

A striking map from The World in Maps showed China as the top trading partner for almost every African nation, with only a few exceptions (mostly former French colonies and South Africa ’s neighbours).

Despite $296 billion in trade, the exchange is lopsided: China sends manufactured goods, while Africa exports mostly raw materials. For all the talk of partnership, the relationship remains deeply unequal.

A century in the air: The history of the long jump world record

The evolution of the long jump world record tells a story of athletic achievement and era-defining moments in sport. It began over a century ago when Peter O’Connor of Ireland made history in 1901 with a jump of 7.61 metres. This was the first officially recognised long jump world record. Remarkably, it stood unchallenged for nearly two decades before a series of athletes gradually pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Britannica revealed that, the turning point came in 1935. Jesse Owens, already a rising star in American athletics, leapt 8.13 metres in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His record was a statement of athletic brilliance and a feat of precision and technique. Owens’ jump remained unbeaten for 25 years and symbolised excellence in track and field.

The 1960s brought new energy to the sport. Ralph Boston from the United States extended Owens’ record to 8.21 metres. He entered into a memorable rivalry with Soviet jumper Igor Ter-Ovanesyan. Over the next seven years, the world record changed hands between them, inching forward until Boston reached 8.35 metres. This period marked the first time athletes from opposing Cold War powers openly contested global track and field dominance.

Then came the defining moment in long jump history. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Bob Beamon stunned the sporting world with an almost superhuman jump. His leap of 8.90 metres surpassed the existing record by 55 centimetres. Spectators, officials, and even Beamon himself struggled to process the distance. His record lasted 23 years and remains the longest-standing Olympic record, now at 52 years and counting.

In 1991, the drama reached another peak. At the World Championships in Tokyo, Mike Powell and Carl Lewis engaged in one of the greatest duels in track and field history. Lewis had been in top form and had already jumped past Beamon’s distance, but his leap was wind-assisted and ineligible for record recognition. In the same competition, Powell delivered a clean jump of 8.95 metres. Over three decades later, it remains the world record, a testament to the power, technique, and mental strength required to break limits.

From the early 1900s to now, the long jump world record has been shaped by legendary names and moments that transcend sport. It reflects how far an athlete can leap and how far ambition and determination can carry human performance.

Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif identified as male in leaked medical report

A leaked report accessed by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia reveals that Khelif, though born female and not identifying as transgender or intersex, reportedly has male characteristics.

According to the report published by Reduxx, medical records obtained by Aoudia suggest that Khelif has “testicles” and an XY chromosome pattern, indicative of a condition related to sexual development. The report was allegedly compiled through a collaboration between Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers in June 2023.

Khelif’s gold medal win was marred by controversy in the ring - Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her opening bout against Khelif after just 46 seconds, launching a barrage of media scrutiny towards the Algerian boxer.

This is not the first time Khelif’s participation has drawn scrutiny; last year, she was disqualified from the World Championships in New Delhi after failing a gender eligibility test issued by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The medical report, which includes MRI scans and hormone analyses, outlines characteristics associated with a disorder of sexual development. Khelif reportedly lacks a uterus, possesses internal testes, and shows traits of a "micropenis" or enlarged clitoris, according to the report’s findings. Chromosome tests purportedly indicate an XY karyotype and hormone levels reportedly align with typical male ranges.

Additionally, the report suggests that Khelif may have 5-alpha reductase deficiency, a condition that impacts sexual development in genetic males and often leads to delayed masculinisation until adolescence. Individuals with this condition may experience body hair growth, increased muscle mass, and absence of menstruation, yet are often raised as females if the disorder is undetected early.

Khelif’s family maintains her female identity. “My child is a girl. She was raised as a girl. She's a strong girl,” her father, Omar Khelif, stated amidst the controversy.

The report further advises Khelif to undergo a "sexual transition," recommending "surgical correction" to remove her gonads and monthly hormone therapy, specifically Decapeptyl injections, to reduce testosterone levels.

Hockey match

Queen Suthida captained Thailand's ice hockey team in a friendly match against China, celebrating two significant anniversaries: the King's 72nd birthday and the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The match, held at the Thailand International Ice Hockey Arena in Bangkok, ended in a draw after Thailand won the first set 6:2, China took the second set 4:3, and the final set culminated in a 6:6 tie, Nation Thailand News reported.

Flooding hits 23 provinces

In light of recent climate challenges, Thailand is facing significant flooding across 23 provinces, affecting more than 66,000 families in 1,647 villages. Currently, flood levels are declining in the northern provinces, but certain areas continue to experience rising waters. The Northeast sees seven inundated provinces with stable water levels, while five provinces in the Central Plains report increasing floods. The southern regions, notably Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla, are reporting descending flood levels. According to Bangkok Post , the adverse effects of this flooding have tragically resulted in 52 fatalities and 28 injuries since mid-August.

Imported goods

Addressing quality control in the market, Thailand's Industry Minister Akanat Promphan has announced enhanced screening procedures for imported goods to restrict the smuggling of inferior products. The closure of the EXEMPT 5 import channel, effective from October 1, aims to eliminate loopholes that allow low-quality imports into the country, Vietnam News explained. It is now mandated that all controlled goods enter through the National Single Window system, regardless of volume. Non-compliance may lead to harsh penalties, including imprisonment and substantial fines. Consumers are encouraged to verify product quality by seeking TISI logos and scanning QR codes.

The Fisheries project

To combat the ecological threat posed by invasive species, the Department of Fisheries in Thailand is repurposing blackchin tilapia into 'pla ra,' a traditional fermented fish sauce. According to Bangkok Post , this project targets the removal of 200,000 kilograms of this invasive species from local areas while fostering economic initiatives. Funding is allocated for local communities to acquire necessary production equipment. Currently, 20 communities have participated in this initiative, which not only aims to lessen ecological disruption but also bolster local economies through the development of marketable fish products.

Discovery of new animal species

In a notable discovery, researchers have identified a new species of frog, Microhyla peninsularis, or the Peninsular narrow-mouthed frog, in southern Thailand. Initially aiming to study Berdmore’s narrow-mouthed frog, scientists recognised this new species through distinct genetic and morphological traits, including its characteristic triangular body and muscular thighs, News Observer reported. These nocturnal frogs, measuring just over one inch in length, are predominantly grey-brown with lighter underbellies and are found in lowland forest ecosystems on the Thai-Malay peninsula.

Football activities suspended

Uruguay has suspended all football activity for the weekend following the health emergency of Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo. According to CNA , the 27-year-old player is currently stable yet unconscious in the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo after experiencing an irregular heartbeat and collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo. The association has announced this suspension for the rights of professional footballers in Uruguay, emphasising the prioritisation of Izquierdo's wellbeing.

Bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia

In a notable diplomatic effort, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay have enhanced bilateral cooperation by forming a joint committee, which recently convened for its inaugural meeting in Montevideo. Chaired by Ahmed Al-Khamshi, Saudi Arabia's Undersecretary of Agriculture, and Nicolas Albertoni, Uruguay's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, this meeting resulted in the signing of a memorandum establishing a joint business council. TV Brics highlights that this collaborative initiative aims to strengthen the trade and diplomatic relations that have existed since 1974.

Increased fish mortality

In environmental news, low temperatures have led to significant fish mortality in the Uruguayan rivers, particularly the Santa Lucia and Negro Rivers. The Assembly for the Water of the Santa Lucia River highlighted the necessity for precautionary measures following the alarming reports of large-scale fish deaths, primarily shad, attributed to freezing temperatures since June, as reported by Prensa Latina . This issue has also been mirrored in Argentina's lower Paraná river basin, prompting discussions around environmental management and conservation strategies.

Uruguay to reduce beef exports to China

Uruguay is actively seeking to reduce its dependency on China for beef exports, a sector significantly impacted by a decelerating Chinese economy. Historically, China has served as the primary market for Uruguayan beef; however, as of August 2023, North America has emerged as the leading revenue source, now accounting for 32% of beef export revenue compared to China's 30%. MercoPress adds that from January to August, Uruguay's beef exports reached US$1.223 billion, exhibiting a slight increase in volume despite an 11% decrease in average prices. Additionally, markets such as the European Union and Israel are contributing to the country’s diversified export strategy. The USDA, however, projects a moderate uptick in Chinese demand for the latter half of the year amidst an anticipated increase in domestic meat production in China.

UAE congratulates Uruguay on Independence Day

UAE leaders, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, sent congratulatory messages to President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay on the occasion of Uruguay's Independence Day, celebrated on August 25th to mark its independence from Brazil in 1825, reports The Siasat Daily .

The Village, which will host a total of 4,400 athletes competing from August 28 to September 8, welcomed delegations from countries including Chile, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and South Africa.

Now, it is preparing to accommodate approximately 180 Paralympic delegations, starting with the arrival of the chefs de mission early on the morning of Sunday, August 18.

The Village, originally designed with accessibility, required only minimal adjustments to meet the specific needs of Paralympic athletes. Laurent Michaud, the Village director, highlighted that “public spaces, roads, sidewalks, and crosswalks were all created to be navigable by wheelchair users, adhering to universal accessibility standards for new urban developments.”

Michaud added, “We’re adding temporary grab bars in the bathrooms and wheelchairs in the showers to facilitate transfers,” ensuring that all athletes can comfortably and safely navigate their living spaces during the Games.

In the Village apartments, only units with at least one bathroom adapted for people with reduced mobility (PRM) will be used. This adaptation reduces the number of required beds from 14,000 during the Olympics to 9,000 for the Paralympics, allowing for a more efficient use of space.

Despite starting later than many, Angela quickly developed a passion for gymnastics, progressing from summer camp to formal classes. Her dedication and hard work have led her to compete in numerous national competitions with her unique routines, including her biggest, the NAIGC Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she placed 39th out of 375 gymnasts.

Angela said she dreamed of being in the Olympics, but as she got older, she "just wanted to show people that no matter your size or age, gymnastics is worth giving a shot." She says her plus-size frame does not hinder her ability to perform flawless cartwheels, vaults, tumbles, and jumps.

"Anyone can be a gymnast as long as you're willing to work hard," Angela added.

Identifying herself as plus-sized, Angela acknowledges the physical differences between herself and her typically smaller competitors but insists she has never felt disadvantaged. "In terms of regular gymnastics, I am much bigger than my other competitors but it hasn't stopped me," Angela told AFP.

She credits her supportive environment for her positive experience in the sport, emphasizing that hard work and determination are more important than size or age in gymnastics.

Angela's parents were initially against her entering gymnastics. "We were not athletic, and they were worried I was going to get hurt," she said. However, after convincing her mother, she stepped in to support Angela's early training efforts.

Over the years, she has transitioned from team performances to solo routines, allowing her to tailor her routines to her preferences and continuously refine her skills.

Angela remains passionate about breaking stereotypes and encouraging others to pursue their dreams, emphasising that gymnastics is about enjoyment and personal growth above all else.

Tax dividends

Colombia's constitutional court has upheld the country's tax on dividends, rejecting an appeal arguing it was confiscatory. The appeal, brought by lawyer Humberto Sierra Porto, failed to demonstrate the confiscatory nature of the tax increase. The withholding tax on outbound dividends increased to 20% from 10%, while inter-corporate dividends are taxed at 10%, Bloomberg reports.

COP 16

The 16th United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity of the Parties (COP16) will be hosted by the Colombian government in Cali, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. According to Climate Chance , the monitoring framework agreed at the previous conference to allow the progress of the countries towards national goals and targets under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to be evaluated.

Colombian gymnast represents at Olympics

North Texan Luisa Blanco, a gymnast, will represent Colombia at the Paris Olympics. She obtained dual citizenship to compete and earned her spot at the Colombian National Championship. Blanco is focused on representing her home country and having fun at the Olympics, NBC reports .

Bullfighting bill approved

Lawmakers in Colombia have approved a bill that seeks to ban one of the country's biggest and oldest traditional sports, bullfighting. The approval comes after 93 Congress members voted for ‘yes’ as opposed to the 2-member vote for ‘no’ during a debate on the bill. Congress on May 28 announced the approval of the last of four debates that were held in parliament to discuss the bill. The bill awaits presidential sanction to become a law in the country, GSW reports.

Transitional Justice process

A team of Nepali cross-party leaders is visiting Colombia to study its transitional justice process, specifically the performance of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP). The SJP was created as part of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrilla group in 2016. According to The Kathmandu Post , the leaders hope to learn from Colombia's successful conclusion of the transitional justice process, particularly in implementing reduced sentencing for perpetrators who cooperate in revealing the truth. This visit comes at a time when Nepal's transitional justice process has been paralysed, with the government failing to find a meeting point in the amendment bill. The leaders believe that studying the Colombian model will be helpful in understanding how Nepal can adopt similar practices in its own transitional justice process. Colombia's constitutional court has upheld the country's tax on dividends, rejecting an appeal arguing it was confiscatory. The appeal, brought by lawyer Humberto Sierra Porto, failed to demonstrate the confiscatory nature of the tax increase. The withholding tax on outbound dividends increased to 20% from 10%, while inter-corporate dividends are taxed at 10%.

The approval comes after 93 Congress members voted for ‘yes’ as opposed to the 2-member vote for ‘no’ during a debate on the bill.

Congress on May 28 announced the approval of the last of four debates that were held in parliament to discuss the bill.

The bill awaits presidential sanction to become a law in the country.

About the bill

The bill was proposed by senator of the Historical Pact Esmeralda Hernández and 45 other congressmen who sought to stop the popular spot which they described as cruel and a symbol of torture.

The arguments were that while it puts the participants at risk of death and injury, it also kills the animals.

The bill was approved in the three initial debates held in Commission VI of the House but faced multiple suspensions during plenary discussions, local reports confirm.

Congressmen, bullfighters, animal rights activists, and representatives of various mayor’s offices were involved in the debate.

The bill includes provisions for the employment of workers in the bullfighting industry as part of efforts to reduce the economic impact of the bill. The bill also makes provision for the conversion of bullrings, 10% of which are still active, into cultural centres that could revitalise the affected communities.

Opposition to the bill

The bill generated controversy as there were both advocates for its prohibition and activists who were against the ban.

Among the arguments by defenders of the sport was the fact that bullfighting has a huge economic impact on the country as well as on individuals and groups who depend on bullfighting.

The senator of the Democratic Center, María Fernanda Cabal , argued that hundreds depend on bullfighting to make a living and its prohibition would end a deeply rooted tradition in several regions of the country.

Meanwhile, Colombia’s President Gustave Petro has lauded the approval of the bill.

“Congratulations to those who finally managed to make death not a spectacle,” said the president. Those who have fun with the death of animals will end up having fun with the death of human beings; "Just as those who burn books will end up burning human beings,” he wrote on X .

Bullfighting

Bullfighting is a popular sport in many Spanish-speaking countries. Scores of persons pay to watch the ceremonial fight between bulls and matadors (bullfighter who works the capes and usually kills the bull). The fight usually happens in a sand arena and the bulls are usually killed. It is also popular in Portugal and southern France , but it is illegal to kill the bull in these countries.

Ethiopian athletes not only demonstrated their dominance but also exhibited resilience and skill on the international stage. The event saw remarkable performances, particularly in the men's category, Fanabc reports.

The 2023 Valencia Marathon will be remembered as a showcase of Ethiopia's prowess in long-distance running, solidifying its standing in the global athletic community.

Sisay Lemma’s record-breaking run

Leading the charge was Ethiopian athlete Sisay Lemma, who stormed through the marathon with a remarkable time of 2:01:48. This outstanding achievement secured Lemma the title of the 4th fastest man in marathon history. The Ethiopian contingent continued to excel, with Dawit Wolde finishing in the 3rd position with a commendable time of 2:03:48.

“I feel great to win in Valencia. Once I passed the half marathon I realised that I was running at a record pace and that I had the strength to run and beat the race record. It was my first time in Valencia. I’m very happy to have beaten the record. It’s a very fast course. At km 15 I tried to go at a world record pace but the pacemakers were being irregular at that pace and I decided not to go for the world record but for the race record. At km 25 I realised that I wasn’t going to be able to go under 2:01,″ he is quoted by valenciaciudaddelrunning.com .

Kenenisa Bekele sets records at 41

Notably, Kenenisa Bekele, at 41 years old, made history by breaking the marathon master’s world record (M40). Despite finishing in the 4th position, Bekele's remarkable time of 2:04:19 underscored the resilience and skill that have defined his career.

Worknesh Degefa’s stellar performance

The women's elite race witnessed an equally impressive performance by Ethiopian athlete Worknesh Degefa. Clocking a strong time of 2:15:51, Degefa secured the top position, showcasing her determination and skill on the marathon course.

“First of all, thank you for the invitation. I enjoyed running here and I am very happy with the result. From the 30th kilometre onwards I started to push hard, running my race and not looking at Ayana. I decided to run my race without looking at my rivals. The pacemakers were not everything I was expecting. They were very irregular, so I decided to run alone,” she is quoted.

The Ethiopian dominance continued as Almaz Ayana and Howot Gebrekidan claimed the 2nd and 3rd positions, completing a clean sweep of the women's elite competition. Ayana finished with a time of 2:16:22, while Gebrekidan crossed the finish line in 2:17:59.

Is this Mo Salah's final opportunity to lead Egypt to AFCON victory?

The Pharaohs will compete fiercely against other top contenders like Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, and Morocco after being placed in Group B with Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The presence of Mohamed Salah, perhaps the best player on the continent and one of the biggest football stars in the world, gives Egypt a significant advantage over their rivals.

The Pharaohs’ AFCON exploits over the years

Having won the trophy more than any other country, Egypt has a long history in the AFCON. When they hosted and won the tournament's inaugural edition in 1957, it was their first victory. They accomplished the feat once more in 1959, then in 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010. Under the direction of famous coach Hassan Shehata, who coached a golden age of players like Ahmed Hassan, Mohamed Aboutrika, Mohamed Zidan, and Wael Gomaa, they won their last three championships.

Egypt hasn't been able to compete at the same level in the AFCON since their last title in 2010, nevertheless. Due to subpar qualifier performances, they were excluded from three consecutive tournaments in 2012, 2013 and 2015. In 2017, they participated once more and made it to the final, where Cameroon defeated them. They once again hosted the competition in 2019, but in the round of 16, they were shockingly defeated by South Africa. They made it all the way to the final once again in the 2021 edition but lost 4-2 on penalties to Senegal.

Is Mo Salah still the best on the continent?

The rise of Mo Salah to the status of a global superstar has been one of the primary factors in Egypt's comeback in the AFCON. With his speed, talent, and finishing prowess, the Liverpool forward has been a reliable performer for both his club and his country, scoring goals and creating them. Numerous individual and group honours, such as three Premier League Golden Boots, a Champions League title, a FIFA Club World Cup title, and a FIFA Puskas Award have been bestowed upon him.

Salah has also played a significant role for Egypt at the AFCON, contributing 64% of Egypt's goals in the AFCON since his debut in 2017. In the quarterfinal round of the 2021 competition, he won the man of the match award as Egypt defeated Morocco after extra time, he scored the goal to bring the game level in normal time and assisted the winner in extra time.

Salah's competition with other African stars who have achieved success at the club and international levels is strong. Over the years, he has shared the CAF Footballer of the Year podium alongside ex-Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane (Senegal), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) and Riyad Mahrez (Algeria).

Victor Osimhen, a striker from Nigeria who is currently ranked among the finest in the world, is a newcomer to the scene after helping his club Napoli win the Italian Serie A for the first time since 1990. In the competition, he would also try to match his club form and lead his nation to glory.

Now or never for the Egyptian King

Five months after the African Championship in 2024 begins, Salah will turn 32. He might never again have the chance to honourably represent Egypt on a continental level. He will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of Aboutrika, a longtime Egyptian staple who was a vital part of the Egyptian team that won the competition three times in a row. Salah once referred to Aboutrika as "the best player I've ever played alongside."

Tournament overview and significance

Following an increase from 16 teams in 2019, the tournament's second iteration will have 24 teams. Additionally, the event will resume its traditional January–February dates after being shifted to June–July in 2019 owing to poor weather and club obligations. Ivory Coast will host the competition, which will take place at six locations across five cities (Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro), having previously won the championship in 1992 and 2015.
