Why a Kenyan court denied bail to 6 police officers accused in blogger Albert Ojwang’s murder

The court ordered that they remain in custody until their next hearing, scheduled for September 26, 2025.

Footage from the Kibera courtroom captured the accused arriving amid tight security as their legal teams pleaded for their release on bail. The accused include former Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam and police constable James Mukhwana.

During the bail hearing, the defence emphasised that the accused had strong community ties and a clean record. Lawyer Stanley Kinyanjui, representing Talam, acknowledged that while the probation report had generally portrayed the accused positively, it cited the victim’s family's views as a key reason for recommending against bail.

“The only disconnect between the probation office and the right of the accused person to be granted bail was the views of the victim,” said Kinyanjui.

The prosecution warned that releasing the accused on bail could result in witness interference and evidence tampering concerns that ultimately influenced the judge’s decision.

Defence attorney Danstan Omari maintained his clients’ innocence. “We are very definite that after trial, they will be walking out of this court as acquitted citizens,” he said, expressing confidence in the eventual outcome.

The murder case has stirred national outrage. Ojwang was reportedly arrested at his rural home and later died in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. A post-mortem revealed he suffered blunt force trauma to the head, neck compression, and widespread bruising, consistent with allegations of torture.

All six accused have pleaded not guilty. The case remains under public scrutiny as demands for police accountability continue to grow.

The findings, released this week by Caribe Afirmativo, a specialised NGO that monitors human rights violations, highlight a worsening pattern of hate-fuelled aggression and systemic impunity.

According to the report, 41 LGBTQ+ individuals have been murdered so far in 2025, representing a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The data reflects rising homicide rates but also points to an alarming consistency in the timeline: e very 48 hours, an LGBTQ+ person is killed in Colombia.

“The report presents heartbreaking figures that constitute an urgent call to eradicate the dynamics of prejudice in the country,” said Iris Marín Ortiz, Colombia’s Ombudswoman, at the report’s presentation in Bogotá.

"Every two days, according to this report, one person is murdered, an LGBTQ+ person, and every two days, one person from this population has been a victim of sexual violence. The report presents heartbreaking figures that constitute an urgent call to eradicate the dynamics of prejudice in the country," Iris added.

But homicides are only part of the picture. The NGO also recorded that, on average, an LGBTQ+ person is sexually assaulted every two days, painting a broader picture of entrenched violence, discrimination, and systemic neglect.

Forensic investigators confirmed the identities of the remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition. The discovery followed the arrest of five suspects, three already appeared in court.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, one of the suspects led the police to the location of the bodies, the Star reports.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killings; however, a multi-agency task force is still carrying out investigations.

Ndlovu, founder of Capital Live FM in Mamelodi, was a well-known figure in regional media circles. His death has drawn reactions from government officials and media organisations, highlighting broader concerns over journalist safety in South Africa.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, visited the Ndlovu family on 4 May and announced plans to visit the radio station where Ndlovu worked. He condemned the killings and described them as part of a broader pattern of violence in the country, acknowledging Ndlovu’s commitment to public service through his work in the media.

"Mr. Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public. His loss, along with Ms. Mdhluli’s, is a tragic reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities," Morolong stated.

The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) in South Africa issued statements expressing concern over the deaths.

Mexico troops shootout with Sinaloa cartel

Mexican troops recently engaged in a shootout in Culiacan, Sinaloa, resulting in the deaths of 19 suspected members of the notorious Sinaloa cartel. This incident was prompted by an attack from a group of more than 30 armed individuals, further intensifying amid drug-related conflicts that have plagued the region since the arrest of cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada. Local authorities managed to apprehend one individual during the incident, whilst a significant number of gunmen managed to flee the scene. The Mexican authorities confiscated nearly 30 firearms and seven vehicles, amidst a surge of violence in Sinaloa that has led to approximately 200 deaths and over 300 missing persons since early September, a part of a broader ongoing crisis that has seen over 450,000 murders nationwide since 2006.

Local drug lord arrested over death of Mexican priest

Edgar N, a local drug dealer, was arrested in connection with the tragic murder of Father Marcelo Pérez, a Catholic priest and vocal human rights advocate. The shooting occurred shortly after Father Marcelo had concluded a Mass in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire. The priest was well-known for his campaigns against drug trafficking and violence in his community. His assassination has prompted widespread mourning and serves as a stark reminder of the escalating violence surrounding turf wars between rival cartels.

Semiconductor roadmap to double exports and jobs

An economic initiative was launched on October 16, involving the US Embassy in Mexico and the National Chamber for the Electronic, Telecommunications and Information Technology Industry (Canieti). They unveiled a Master Plan aimed at developing Mexico's semiconductor industry, with ambitions to double exports and job creation by 2030. The plan aims to increase annual exports from $4.9 billion to $9.8 billion and to boost employment from 10,000 to 20,000 jobs, primarily focusing on relocating high-value operations to Mexico. This strategic initiative is expected to enhance the country's capabilities in producing electric vehicle components while reducing reliance on imports. Additionally, the Mexican Finance Ministry is developing tax incentives mirroring those of the U.S. CHIPs Act to encourage investments in this burgeoning sector, with Foxconn recently announcing plans to establish a factory for assembling "superchips" for Nvidia in Guadalajara.

President addresses judicial reform issues

President Claudia Sheinbaum has sought to address issues surrounding judicial reform in Mexico, defending a new initiative that allows citizens to directly elect judges. She argues that this reform represents a significant step toward enhancing the country's judicial robustness and serves as a potential global benchmark. This proposed change, however, faced criticism from Supreme Court Justice Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, who expressed concerns regarding the potential threat to judicial independence. In response, Sheinbaum insisted on the legality and necessity of the reform, asserting the support of the Mexican populace while emphasising a need for transparency in the judicial selection process. This ongoing debate has raised alarm about the implications for judicial independence, amid fears of increasing government influence and a potential constitutional crisis.

Reduction in illegal border crossings to the U.S.

Recent data indicates a reduction in illegal crossings from Mexico, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting a 7% decrease in September, reaching a four-year low of 53,858 arrests. This decline is attributed to more stringent asylum policies from the Biden administration coupled with enhanced enforcement actions by Mexican authorities. Notably, Mexicans constituted nearly half of all arrests made, marking an increase from prior months. In total, the Border Patrol recorded 1.53 million arrests over the fiscal year ending September 30, a drop from over 2 million in previous years.

Ecuador court sentences five people for up to 34 years in candidate murder

By Alexandra Valencia

A court in Ecuador on Friday handed down prison sentences of 12 years and 34 years for five people found guilty of murdering presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Journalist and former legislator Villavicencio was shot while leaving a rally in August 2023, becoming the most prominent victim of Ecuador's spiralling violence.

The ruling, read out by Milton Maroto, one of the court's three judges, can be appealed by both the prosecution and the defence. The trial started at the end of June.

Prosecutors accused at least two of those tried of belonging to the Los Lobos crime gang, among 22 criminal gangs designated as terrorists by President Daniel Noboa in January.

According to the attorney general's office, Carlos Edwin Angulo Lara, known as 'El Invisible' ('The Invisible'), gave the order to murder Villavicencio from prison, while Laura Dayanara Castillo was in charge of logistics.

Both Angulo and Castillo were sentenced to 34 years and eight months.

Erick Ramirez, Victor Flores and Alexandra Chimbo were sentenced to 12 years.

Villavicencio, whose journalism exposed corruption and connections between organized crime and politicians, had long faced threats.

Prosecutors are undertaking a separate investigation into who requested the murder.

One of the hit men died at the scene of Villavicencio's murder and seven other suspects - mostly Colombian citizens - were murdered in October while being held in prisons on pre-trial detention.

Villavicencio's friends and family have decried multiple delays and urged an investigation into who ordered the killing.

Veronica Sarauz, Villavicencio's widow, had asked judges earlier on Friday in a post on X to apply the full weight of the law to those accused.

Train collision

An accident involving two trains at Richards Bay, north of KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal province in South Africa resulted in the loss of tons of coal. The trains collided on January 14 due to a power outage, causing both trains to derail. No serious injuries were reported, and environmental teams are ensuring compliance with recovery and clean-up operations, local media Daily Sun reports.

Police arrested for murder of robber

Four South African policemen were taken into custody for murder following the death of a man who was thought to have robbed one of the police officers, local media The Citizen reports. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in South Africa announced the arrests of the officers on January 15. “The police officers allegedly hunted down the deceased, a civilian, after accusing him of being one of the people who robbed one of the police officers and took him to the Pop building where they allegedly assaulted him… one of the officers fired a shot that hit the deceased,” an IPID spokesperson told reporters.

Missing police firearms

South African national police commissioner Fannie Masemola has revealed that over the past three years, over 1,725 firearms belonging to the South African Police Services (SAPS) have been lost. The police commissioner’s recent revelation comes after an inquiry by the South African parliament in September 2023, local media Cape Time reports. According to Claire Taylor, a researcher for the NGO Gun Free South Africa (GFSA), about 31 people die from gun violence in South Africa. “The easy availability of guns in South Africa has led to an epidemic of gun violence in which 31 people are shot and killed every day in the country,” she is quoted by Cape Times.

Released prisoners

The South African Department of Correctional Services announced that in 2023 over 5,000 prisoners were released on parole and over 2,000 offenders were on probation in Western Cape, a province in the southwestern corner of South Africa. Candice Van-Reenen, a spokesman for correctional services told reporters that as of the first quarter of the 2023–24 fiscal year, the Western Cape had 5,300 parolees and just over 2,300 offenders on probation. This has caused concerns since there aren't enough police officers monitoring parolees, which has made certain communities fearful, Daily Sun reports.

Cholera cases recorded

South Africa’s Department of Health has reported that two laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera imported from Zimbabwe were detected in Limpopo a province in the northern part of South Africa. Department of Health said that the first case was a 43-year-old male patient who tested positive and was subsequently released from the hospital and the second case was a 27-year-old male who travelled to Zimbabwe on December 9, 2023, and returned to South Africa on January 10, 2024. The second patient was admitted to the hospital with a history of vomiting, watery diarrhoea, and stomach cramps that began on January 11, a Department of Health official informed reporters. “His health condition is stable, and he is still in isolation at the hospital. His contacts were identified, and the local outbreak response team has been activated to conduct further investigations and provide health education to contacts,” the official is quoted by The Citizen .
