Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA) said more than 432 people had been killed in over 115 attacks on Chibok since November 2012.

KADA president Nkeki Mutah said more than half of the area’s towns and villages had been destroyed, with many displaced residents unable to return to their farmland.

Mutah said the attacks appeared to deliberately target the Chibok community and called for special protection from authorities at all levels. He also urged the government to support humanitarian access to Kibaku and increase military deployments to the area.

The appeal follows recent attacks on Christian communities in Chibok that local media blamed on Boko Haram. The town remains globally associated with the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls by the militant group, with dozens still missing.

‘They wanted no one alive’: Survivors describe Nigeria’s latest village massacre

The attackers struck around 5pm local time on Tuesday, February 3, as the village hosted a large wedding ceremony and youth football matches, drawing unusually large crowds. Survivors told local media that hundreds of gunmen arrived on motorcycles, three to a bike, armed with rifles and explosives, and surrounded the community before opening fire, the Vanguard reports.

“They were shooting everyone in sight,” said Ibrahim Farouk, a farmer who survived after being shot in the thigh. “Those who ran were chased into the bush and killed. Those who hid in their houses were burnt inside. They wanted no one alive.”

Farouk said the attackers also threw explosives into homes and shops, torching large parts of the village. Several victims were shot at close range, while others were burned alive. By Friday, at least 35 additional bodies had been recovered from nearby forests, according to residents.

Another survivor, Joshua Deme, said some of the attackers appeared to be teenagers. “The one who shot me was not even 15,” he said. “The younger ones were shooting, while the older ones burned houses.”

A third survivor, miner Usman Bangoro, said the gunmen wore military-style uniforms, initially confusing residents. “You would think they were soldiers,” he said. “But they shot at anything that moved.”

Residents said the attackers abducted about 75 people, including women and children , and used a village vehicle to transport some of the captives. A bomb planted along the Kaiama road later exploded, burning a truck carrying agricultural produce.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Ilorin and Kainji, with local authorities providing ambulances. Survivors say blood shortages have delayed surgeries for some victims.

Community members claim the attackers had earlier sent a message saying they wanted to “preach,” but local leaders rejected the request and alerted security agencies. Troops were reportedly deployed briefly but left days before the attack.

The massacre is the latest in a series of mass killings linked to armed groups operating across central and northwestern Nigeria.

The Financial Reporting Centre (FRC) said the accounts contained hundreds of millions of shillings and were flagged after unusually large sums were transferred from abroad, with investigators pointing to the United States as a possible source. Some of the transactions were made as recently as November last year.

The move followed a decision by the Counter-Financing of Terrorism Inter-Ministerial Committee, which placed the individuals on Kenya’s Domestic Terrorism Sanctions List, triggering immediate asset freezes and restrictions on access to the financial system.

According to the FRC, several of those named are linked to extremist groups, including Al-Shabaab, ISIS and the Allied Democratic Forces, with roles ranging from recruiting fighters to procuring weapons and moving funds across borders.

Authorities said some of the money was routed through countries such as Türkiye and South Africa before reaching Kenya. Banks holding the affected accounts have been ordered to submit full details of the individuals’ assets in the coming days as investigations continue.

In a statement , Minister of Government Communications and official spokesperson Dr Mohammad Momani said the government was aware of the announcement by the US Departments of State and Treasury regarding the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon.

Momani stressed that the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan was legally dissolved following a 2020 court ruling, and that all its activities were formally banned in April 2025. He said Jordan addresses such matters in line with its constitution, laws and what he described as the country’s “supreme national interest”.

“The government’s position is clear and based on judicial decisions and the rule of law,” Momani said, adding that Jordan’s approach to political and security issues remains sovereign and independent.

The US designation was announced earlier on Tuesday, January 13, by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a post on X. Rubio said Washington was formally listing the Lebanese, Egyptian and Jordanian chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organisations, citing national security concerns.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States will eliminate the capabilities and operations of Muslim Brotherhood chapters that threaten US citizens and our national security,” Rubio wrote.

The designation allows US authorities to impose sanctions, freeze assets under US jurisdiction and criminalise material support linked to the named organisations.

Footage circulating on social media shows the moment the device struck the deputy on the back and head, leaving her with multiple injuries.

The incident occurred as López approached the parliamentary building and stopped to speak with a journalist. In the video, she is heard saying that lawmakers were being prevented from entering Congress, moments before the explosion. She was later taken to hospital, where doctors treated her for burns, severe pain, dizziness and hearing impairment.

Congress president Luis Redondo condemned the attack and ordered a review of the video footage, while security forces were deployed around the legislative complex. President-elect Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura also denounced the violence , calling for respect for the rule of law. The attack comes amid heightened post-election tensions following the 30 November vote, after opposition parties rejected a parliamentary session called by the ruling Libre party to discuss a recount.

The strikes, ordered by President Donald Trump on Thursday, December 26, were carried out in response to reports that militants had carried out mass killings of Christians in the area.

“This is an unfortunate situation. We all had a sleepless night due to fear of the unknown, especially after witnessing how the bomb landed, broke into pieces, and caught fire. Our community is currently in a serious and distressing condition,” said Bashar Jabo, a local business owner. “By God’s mercy, the explosive did not land in our houses but fell into the bush. This is something we have never witnessed in this country until today, in the Jabo Community of Tambuwal LGA,” added Malam Aliyu Jabo, a community leader.

Footage from the site shows police cordoning off the landing points, marking craters, and collecting debris while residents observed the damage. “This is the exact spot where the bomb first landed before bouncing and breaking into pieces, which caused the flames.

It created a large crater, though it now appears smaller due to people visiting the site. Some children even picked up fragments of the bomb, while the remaining debris has been taken by the military,” said eyewitness Lukuman Myhammad. Authorities confirmed that security and emergency teams remain on alert to prevent further incidents and to ensure residents’ safety.

The US strikes, reportedly conducted by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) at the request of Nigerian authorities, form part of ongoing operations against Islamic State factions in Nigeria, which have been linked to targeted killings and attacks on civilians, particularly Christians.

The Nigerian Foreign Ministry confirmed the strikes early Friday, describing them as part of “structured security cooperation” aimed at countering the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.

Nigerian authorities stressed that militant groups target people of all faiths, and that the strikes are part of broader efforts to stabilise the region following a national security emergency declared in November. The Pentagon later clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that the strikes were conducted “in coordination with Nigerian authorities,” amending an earlier post.

In November, President Trump had threatened to withdraw US aid and intervene directly in response to the alleged “mass slaughter” of Christians, which the Nigerian government has denied. According to international reports, more than 7,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria in the first half of 2025, mainly in the northern Middle Belt.

Nigerian military officials said in a statement to local media on Friday morning that the strike was conducted in coordination and with the approval of Nigerian authorities.

“The strike followed credible intelligence and careful operational planning aimed at degrading the capability of the targeted elements while minimising collateral damage.

“The operation underscores the resolve of the Federal Government of Nigeria, working with strategic partners, to confront transnational terrorism and prevent foreign fighters from establishing or expanding footholds within Nigeria’s borders,” Local media The Guardian quoted the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major-General Samaila Uba.

The U.S. military ’s Africa Command had said the strike was carried out in Sokoto state in coordination with Nigerian authorities and killed multiple ISIS militants.

This follows Trump’s post on Truth Social that said: “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries!”

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar told the BBC that the strike was a "joint operation" targeting "terrorists", and it "has nothing to do with a particular religion ".

Without naming ISIS specifically, Tuggar said the operation had been planned "for quite some time" and had used intelligence information provided by the Nigerian side, reports Reuters. He did not rule out further strikes, adding that this depended on "decisions to be taken by the leadership of the two countries".

The attack occurred during a Jewish Hanukkah gathering and left 15 people dead and at least 42 injured. Police have identified the suspects as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The older suspect was shot and killed by police at the scene. Authorities are treating the incident as an anti-Semitic terrorist attack.

Footage from the scene shows al-Ahmed grabbing one of the gunmen from behind, forcing him to the ground and taking his weapon. He is then seen pointing the gun at the suspect, who later fled.

Background and identity

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that al-Ahmed is an Australian citizen of Syrian origin. Family members say he comes from al-Nayrab village near Idlib in Syria and migrated to Australia in 2006. He lives in Sydney, where he runs a fruit shop, and is married with two children .

His brother, Huthaifa al-Ahmed, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that Ahmed was nearby when the shooting began and intervened immediately. “I’m really proud of my brother,” he said. Al-Ahmed was shot twice during the incident and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to St George Hospital in Kogarah, New South Wales, where he is undergoing treatment and further surgery. Albanese visited him in hospital on Tuesday, describing his actions as an example of national unity. “Ahmed al-Ahmed took the gun off that perpetrator at great risk to himself,” the prime minister said.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also praised al-Ahmed, calling him a “real-life hero” whose actions helped prevent further loss of life.

Al-Ahmed’s intervention has been widely commended in Australia and internationally. A fundraising campaign set up to support him and his family has raised more than $218,000. However, misinformation also circulated online following the attack, with false claims about al-Ahmed’s religion and identity. These claims were later corrected by Australian authorities.

While Ahmed survived bullet wounds to his arm and hand, 69-year-old Boris Gurman and his wife, Sofia, 61, did not.

The video captures a Jewish couple—Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61—stepping in to protect others during the early moments of the attack.

Gurman, a retired mechanic, is seen in the footage wearing a purple shirt, charging at an armed assailant in a black shirt, attempting to disarm him while his wife stood beside him.

Witness accounts and the video suggest the attacker had another firearm, which was then used to fatally shoot the couple. Both Boris and Sofia were among the first victims of the incident, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The Gurman family released a statement describing the couple's actions as instinctively selfless.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness. This encapsulates who Boris and Sofia were— people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others.”

The couple had been married for 34 years, with their 35th anniversary approaching in January.

“We were looking forward to celebrating Sofia’s 62nd birthday on Wednesday, 17 December,” the family added.

Witnesses have described Gurman as a hero. The woman who shared the dashcam footage told Reuters, “Mr Gurman did not run away—instead, he charged straight toward the danger, using all his strength trying to wrestle away the gun and fighting to the death.”

“Everyone needs to know what he tried, because it was right in the beginning. And he put himself in that face of danger. There were bullets flying already, and he put his self in the face of danger,” another witness told reporters.

The attack, which occurred during a Hanukkah event, left at least 15 people dead and 22 others injured, nine critically. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87, including a child, a rabbi, a former police officer, and a Holocaust survivor.

Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community. Police identified the attackers as a father and son, Sajid and Naveed Akram. The father, aged 50, was killed by officers at the scene, while the 24-year-old son remains in hospital.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, calling it “An act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”

The attack occurred on Sunday, December 14, as hundreds gathered to mark the first day of Hanukkah. Authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community.

Police confirmed two suspects were involved. One is deceased, while the other is in critical condition and receiving treatment in the hospital.

Officers also discovered and removed explosive devices from a nearby vehicle. A rescue bomb disposal unit was deployed to secure the area, as the vehicle was believed to contain several improvised explosive devices.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, describing it as “an act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.” He added, “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian and every Australian tonight will be, like me, devastated on this attack on our way of life. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear, we will eradicate it.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the incident in a press conference. “The entire nation of Israel misses a beat in this very moment, as we pray for the recovery of the wounded, we pray for them, and we pray for those who have lost their lives. We send our warmest strength from here, from Jerusalem, and we repeat our alert time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism which is plaguing Australian society .”

Following the attack, police forces in other countries have increased security at public Hanukkah events as a precaution.

In April, Global South World interviewed Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, during the Crans Montana Forum in Casablanca, Morocco. Diop stated that Mali was reclaiming control over its future and “winning the war on terror”.

Watch the full interview:

However, subsequent reports show an increase in terrorist activity across the Sahel. Armed groups continue to grow in strength and territorial reach, leading to instability across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These three countries formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in 2023 as part of a collective defence initiative.

United Nations reports highlight widespread violence, noting that entire communities have been displaced in Burkina Faso, northern Mali, and western Niger. This displacement stems from continued clashes between armed groups, intercommunal violence, and military operations.

In Mali, the Security Council reports that Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate, has launched attacks on over 100 fuel tankers and abducted fuel truck drivers near the capital, Bamako, and other locations.

Why US terrorist label on 'Cartel de los Soles' marks new phase in tensions with Venezuela

Until now, Washington had relied mainly on sanctions and financial pressure, including an earlier “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” (SDGT) status. The new FTO classification goes further, placing the group, which U.S. authorities say is led by senior figures in Nicolás Maduro’s government, within a legal and security framework traditionally reserved for organisations considered direct threats to U.S. national security .

This step signals a new phase because the FTO designation grants Washington stronger legal tools than previous sanctions allowed. Under this classification, individuals or entities that provide support to the group can face criminal prosecution, and U.S. agencies gain wider authority to freeze assets and pursue actions against those linked to the network. The shift from a financial sanctioning regime to an anti-terrorism framework elevates the confrontation from political disagreement to a security-based dispute.

Venezuela’s response underscores the escalation. Caracas dismissed the designation as a “ridiculous fabrication” and insisted that the Cartel de los Soles does not exist, framing the move as an attempt to justify an “illegitimate and illegal intervention.” The sharp rejection reflects how the new label challenges the legitimacy of senior Venezuelan officials by identifying them, according to Washington, as part of a structure tied to drug trafficking and to other groups already designated as terrorist organisations.

The timing has also fuelled perceptions of a shift. The measure comes at a moment when the U.S. has increased its military presence in the Caribbean and the southern Atlantic, a context noted by observers who see the combination of the FTO designation and regional deployments as part of a more assertive posture. While the label itself does not authorise military action, it expands the legal and political space for the U.S. to act more forcefully, if it chooses to do so.

Taken together, these elements explain why the terrorist designation represents a new phase: Washington has redefined its dispute with Venezuela from a diplomatic and economic confrontation to one framed around national and regional security with broader consequences and higher stakes for both governments.

The blast killed nine people and injured several others on Monday evening.

Bhat’s DNA samples matched those of his mother’s, collected in Pulwama and brought to Delhi for comparison with remains preserved at Lok Nayak Hospital.

Experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed the match, identifying Bhat as the driver whose body had been severely damaged in the explosion.

Investigators said DNA profiling was critical to the identification, as the remains were beyond recognition.

Police officials suspect Bhat was the leader of a “white-collar” terror cell composed largely of doctors. The group was allegedly part of an “inter-state and transnational” module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind.

Seven suspects were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir just hours before the Red Fort blast.

Investigators believe Bhat was “steering and motivating” the module, which included other medical professionals. A red Ford EcoSport linked to him was recovered from a farmhouse in Khandawali village, Haryana, on Wednesday. Forensic and ballistic teams examined the vehicle after it was seized.

The SUV, police said, was mainly used by Dr. Muzamil Shakeel Ganai, another doctor from Pulwama and one of the seven arrested suspects. Ganai worked alongside Bhat at the School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre at Al Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana.

Bhat, a resident of Koil village in Pulwama, had previously studied medicine in Srinagar and briefly worked as a senior resident at the Government Medical College in Anantnag.

Former colleagues later described him as negligent and abrasive, with a pattern of absenteeism and patient complaints.

Two other doctors from Al Falah University — Dr. Ganai and Dr. Shaheen Shahid Ansari of Lucknow — were detained in the days before the explosion.

Authorities are now focusing on whether the group planned further attacks and how a trained doctor became the alleged mastermind of one of Delhi’s deadliest blasts in years.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Secretary of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Curi, said that 117 suspects were "neutralised" during Operation Contention, and that most of them had serious criminal backgrounds.

“117 narco-terrorists were neutralised. So far, 99 have been identified. Of these, 42 had pending arrest warrants. Among the rest, 78 had a significant criminal record for various serious crimes such as murder, drug trafficking , robbery, among others,” Curi stated.

The operation took place in the Penha and Alemão complexes, areas authorities describe as strongholds of Comando Vermelho — one of Brazil ’s most powerful drug trafficking organisations. According to Curi, the action was aimed at dismantling the group’s local command structure.

The state’s Secretary of Security, Victor Santos, praised the coordination and intelligence work behind the operation and expressed solidarity with injured officers and the families of those affected.

“My presence here is, in fact, once again to reinforce the work of the police, to commend the planning and intelligence that served as the basis for the operation to unfold as planned, and to provide support, obviously, to the families of the police officers who died and those still hospitalised. One officer lost a leg. Three colleagues remain in serious or critical condition,” Santos said.

Operation Contention involved around 2,500 officers and was aimed at serving over 100 arrest warrants. The death toll has prompted concern from human rights groups, while the state government continues to defend the operation as a necessary response to organised crime in Rio’s favelas.

Gas stations are running dry, electricity cuts have become common, and public transport has slowed to a crawl.

With schools and universities shut down, frustration is spreading across the country. Businesses are struggling, and many people are finding it harder to move around or access basic services.

Outside the capital, things are even worse. Clashes between Malian forces and terrorist groups in rural and border areas have forced people from their homes, cut off supply routes, and made it difficult for aid to reach those in need.

The situation has grown so unstable that the United States has issued an urgent security alert, telling all American citizens to leave Mali immediately.

On October 28, the U.S. Embassy in Bamako issued a security alert that reflects the growing danger on the ground. The message urges Americans to leave the country as soon as possible, using commercial flights while they are still available. Roads leading out of Mali are considered too dangerous, with frequent attacks and armed ambushes reported along major highways.

For those who choose to stay, the Embassy advises preparing for emergencies, stocking up on supplies, keeping communication devices ready, and staying out of public view. It also warns that U.S. officials have limited ability to help citizens outside the capital because of the ongoing conflict and travel risks.

“The international airport in Bamako remains open and flights are available,” the alert states. “U.S. citizens should depart using commercial aviation, as overland routes to neighbouring countries may not be safe for travel.”

Operation Catalyst, conducted between July and September 2025, was jointly coordinated by Interpol and Afripol to track and disrupt financial flows used to fund extremist groups. Authorities screened more than 15,000 individuals and entities, uncovering approximately USD 260 million in both fiat and virtual currencies potentially tied to terrorism-related activities. Over USD 600,000 has been seized, with investigations underway to trace and recover additional assets.

The operation revealed how terrorism financing networks often overlap with other criminal enterprises, including money laundering, cyber fraud, kidnapping for ransom, Ponzi schemes, and the misuse of cryptocurrencies. Of those arrested, 21 were linked to terrorism, 28 to financial fraud and money laundering, 16 to cyber-enabled scams, and 18 to the illicit use of virtual assets.

Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said the joint initiative marks a turning point in counter-terrorism collaboration on the continent. “This is the first time financial crime, cybercrime, and counter-terrorism units from multiple African countries have joined forces to target terrorism financing,” he said.

Afripol Executive Director Ambassador Jalel Chelba hailed the cooperation between agencies, calling it a model for regional security. “Operation Catalyst illustrates how coordinated action between member states, facilitated by AFRIPOL and INTERPOL, can effectively address complex and evolving threats,” he said.

The operation was further supported by private-sector intelligence from Binance, Moody’s, and Uppsala Security.

The verdict was delivered by the Specialised Criminal Court in Banska Bystrica, central Slovakia. Cintula, 72, was escorted from the courtroom by armed officers after the ruling.

Prosecutors had initially sought a life sentence, but the court granted extraordinary mitigation, reducing the punishment to 21 years. Cintula’s lawyer indicated plans to appeal, seeking to downgrade the conviction to a lesser offence involving an attack on a public official.

The trial, which began in July, featured eight hearings and drew national attention.

Fico was shot multiple times on May 15, 2024, after a government meeting in the town of Handlova. He was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition but survived after multiple surgeries.

Cintula, a former security guard and amateur poet, was arrested at the scene. Authorities described the attack as politically motivated, marking one of the most serious acts of violence against a European leader in recent years.

A recent donor event secured new pledges, but persistent funding gaps, Egypt–Ethiopia rivalry, Turkey’s expanding role, and U.S. retrenchment under Trump’s “America First” policy place the mission under severe strain. Its future will shape the Horn of Africa’s security and Europe’s exposure to maritime instability, migration, and terrorism.

What’s at stake?

On September 25, 2025, the AU, UN, Somali government, and UK co-hosted a financing event at the UN General Assembly in New York. Italy, Japan, South Korea, and Spain contributed funds, while the EU is expected to support the $20 million that the AU and £16.5 million that the UK committed. However, authorities acknowledged that there is still a £22 million deficit. Leaders from the AU and UN warned that without consistent, long-term support, the mission may fail.

The warning comes in an already violent year that has seen Al Shabaab intensify its offensive. Twenty recruits were killed by a suicide bombing at the Damaanyo military base in Mogadishu, and 21 people, including elders in charge of local defence, were killed during a hotel siege in Beledweyne earlier this year as well. A strike on U.S. forces at Kismayo airport highlighted Somalia's vulnerability, while militants overran a garrison in Ceeldheer, seizing supplies and vehicles. These incidents demonstrate that militants can still destabilise both rural and urban areas in the absence of a significant AU presence.

The background

AUSSOM was established in January 2025 as a leaner version of ATMIS/AMISOM, but it was still charged with securing critical infrastructure, assisting the Somali Security Forces (SSF), and degrading Al-Shabaab. It operates in five sectors, with a phased drawdown aimed at Somali self-reliance by 2029.

Donor fatigue is glaring despite September's pledges, with the UK having acknowledged a £22 million shortfall. Operational planning is undermined by the fact that many contributions are still one-time rather than consistent over several years. UN and AU officials have cautioned that if funding sources fail, troop logistics and salaries could be jeopardised.

Regional dynamics

Ethiopia is a major troop contributor, but it is cautious of Egyptian deployments because it views them as destabilising and linked to the geopolitics of the Nile Basin amid tensions surrounding the GERD development. Additionally, Addis Ababa conducts unilateral actions outside of AU coordination. Addis has hinted it may reconsider its own commitments if Egyptian deployments expand.

Egypt is now deploying troops under AUSSOM after finalising agreements with Mogadishu. Egyptian contingents are expected to take over positions in Sector Five (Middle Shabelle), including Bal’ad, Jowhar, and Mahaday, currently held by Burundian forces. Cairo frames this as support for Somalia’s stability, but critics see it as part of its strategic contest with Ethiopia. However, Somali leaders have openly denied that they will be used as a front in a proxy conflict.

Ankara is a longtime bilateral partner that invests in infrastructure, maintains a significant base in Mogadishu, and trains Somali special forces. Although it complicates AU coordination, its expanding role gives Mogadishu alternatives.

Recalibration of the United States: US President Donald Trump has made it clear that the United States "will not police Somalia or Kenya." Washington is shrinking its footprint, prioritising a focus on intelligence assistance and targeted strikes. Recent airstrikes such as those near Badhan and on Al-Shabaab camps, demonstrate continued engagement, but with fewer resources on the ground.

Comment

AUSSOM is indispensable yet precarious. It stabilises Somalia's fragile transition, but ongoing underfunding erodes planning and troop morale. International acknowledgement of the mission's importance does not yet translate into sustainable resourcing, as the September financing event demonstrated.

AUSSOM’s credibility also suffers from its uneven relationship with Somalia’s federal and regional authorities. Disputes between Mogadishu and federal member states such as Jubaland and Puntland undermine coordination, leaving gaps that Al-Shabaab readily exploits. For many Somalis, the mission is caught between being a stabiliser and a symbol of dependency, struggling to empower Somali forces while remaining an indispensable promise of security.

The U.S. withdrawal increases accountability for European and African donors. The problem for Europe is serious: terrorism, migration, and maritime insecurity could spread without strong AU operations, but there is still little desire for greater engagement. For Somalis, AUSSOM serves as a reminder of the state's vulnerability as well as a source of comfort against Al-Shabaab.

Assessment / Outlook

With the help of recent donor commitments, AUSSOM should be able to maintain its position in the near term, but operational constraints brought on by budget deficits will continue. Al-Shabaab will most likely keep carrying out asymmetrical attacks, such as raids in central Somalia and suicide bombings in Mogadishu, in an effort to test the resolve of the AU and Somali people.

Looking ahead, if donor fatigue persists, there is a real chance that the mission will be reduced too soon. Somalia's security forces are unlikely to be fully responsible by 2029 due to the country's unresolved conflicts between the federal government and its regions and its sluggish institutional reform. AU cohesion and Mogadishu's balancing act will be made more difficult by the escalating regional rivalries, which include Ethiopia's resistance, Egypt's ambitions for influence, and Turkey's growing involvement.

The stakes are high for Europe and other partners. In addition to giving Al-Shabaab more confidence, a weakened AUSSOM would raise the risks to Red Sea trade and encourage migration northward, highlighting the close connection between Somalia's stability and wider international security.

Conclusion

AUSSOM embodies both the promise and limits of African-led stabilisation. It is essential in holding back Al-Shabaab and enabling fragile Somali governance, yet its survival depends on reliable funding and regional consensus. Turkey’s rise and the Egypt–Ethiopia tug-of-war complicate AU unity, while U.S. retrenchment shifts responsibility toward Africa and Europe. For Somalia, the mission is a lifeline. For the West, it is a warning: failure to sustain AUSSOM risks reverberations across the Horn, the Red Sea, and into Europe’s own security corridors.

Speaking to party members as they gathered for the annual conference, Badenoch paid tribute to the victims of what she called a “horrific and despicable” assault on Manchester’s Jewish community during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

“Targeting the centre of community life on the holiest day of the year was not just an attack on British Jews, it was an attack on all of us. It was an attack on our humanity and on Britain’s values of freedom, compassion and respect,” Badenoch said.

She warned that anti-semitic hate and radical Islamist ideology had been “allowed to fester unchecked” in Britain’s streets for years, pointing to inflammatory slogans at protests and intimidation of Jewish communities.

“We have tolerated this in our country for too long,” she said. “You can think what you like and, within the law , say what you like, but you have no right to turn our streets into theatres of intimidation, and we will not let you do so anymore,” she warned.

She further urged the country to draw a “firm line” against importing values hostile to Britain’s democratic principles. She reassured Jewish communities that the government “stands with you shoulder to shoulder.”

A man believed to be Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian origin, was shot dead by police after launching an attack on a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Two worshippers, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 55, were killed in the incident. Police confirmed that one of the victims died after being accidentally shot by officers attempting to stop the attacker.

Arévalo launches process to establish Departmental Governments

President Bernardo Arévalo has begun implementing Guatemala’s Departmental Governments mechanism as part of his A Tu Tierra working tour, with the latest stop in Petén. The initiative aims to decentralise governance by empowering governors to coordinate executive offices and municipal governments, creating localised networks to deliver services more effectively. Arévalo said the model will prioritise territorial needs through strategic agendas focused on social and productive development. The programme seeks to extend state presence beyond central departments and strengthen collaboration between national institutions and local authorities. By 2025, the government plans to establish departmental governments in seven regions, including Chiquimula, San Marcos, Retalhuleu and Alta Verapaz, in a bid to bring decision-making closer to remote communities.

Guatemala Congress advances bill to classify gangs as terrorists

Guatemala’s Congress has advanced Bill 5692, which would declare gang members terrorists , moving it to a second reading with final approval expected in a future session. The initiative proposes reforms to the Penal Code and the Law Against Organized Crime to treat all crimes committed by maras as high-risk offences. It would double penalties for gang-related crimes and impose three to 10 years in prison for threats made by gang members. Lawmakers say the reforms aim to strengthen the state’s ability to combat organised crime by mandating resources for enforcement.

Arévalo accuses Congress of blocking executive’s work

President Bernardo Arévalo has criticised Guatemala’s Congress for what he called an unprecedented campaign of obstruction against his government. He said lawmakers have abused their oversight role, citing more than 260 citations this year directed at the Ministry of Communications alone, with 11 of 14 ministers facing interpellation requests. Arévalo argued that such pressure amounts to harassment rather than accountability, warning it prevents ministries from functioning. He also condemned attempts by legislators to intimidate officials, including an incident involving Communications Minister Miguel Ángel Díaz. Political analyst Renzo Rosal backed Arévalo’s concerns, saying congressional tactics have undermined the separation of powers and created the appearance of Congress overriding the Executive.

Guatemala moves toward maximum-security prison for gangs

Guatemala’s Congress is advancing plans to build a maximum-security prison for gang members as part of a wider security reform. Lawmakers are revisiting Initiative 5692, first introduced in 2020, which sought to label gangs as terrorist groups. A technical committee met this week to draft a proposal that could amend at least ten laws covering security and justice within six weeks. The plan will combine repression with prevention, focusing on child recruitment and victim protection. Proposals include tougher penalties for extortion, money laundering and criminal association, alongside greater powers for prosecutors and police. Officials argue isolating gang leaders is key, as more than 7,000 extortion cases are reported annually.

Arévalo backs Petén communities in forest protection pacts

President Bernardo Arévalo, on his A Tu Tierra tour in Petén, oversaw the signing of cooperation agreements between the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) and four local settlements to safeguard the Great Mayan Forest. The communities of Corral Pek, San Agustín and El Pato in Poptún, along with Nacimiento Nuevo Paraíso La Rejoya in Melchor de Mencos, committed to sustainable development practices that balance livelihoods with conservation. Arévalo highlighted the long-standing role of communities as stewards of natural resources, noting the forest “repays” with water, oxygen and opportunities for agriculture and tourism. He stressed that ensuring harmony between people and environment requires coordination across state institutions and local actors alike.

“From this platform, I wish to denounce France’s assumed and claimed support for terrorism in the Sahel and in Niger in particular,” Zeine said in his speech.

“Since the removal of its troops from Niger in 2023, the government has implemented a sneaky and subversive destabilisation plan, informing, training, financing, and equipping terrorists, with unfortunate attempts to create the conditions for an inter-ethnic conflict in Niger and the Sahel,” he remarked.

Zeine accused France of running a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Niger’s institutions, political leaders, and army, while also trying to create permanent political tension between Niger and its neighbours.

“This is accompanied by an unprecedented economic and financial war, notably in France’s hateful intent to sabotage all our development projects by demobilising investors and systematically voting against Niger in international financial institutions such as the African Development Bank, the World Bank , and the IMF,” he said.

Since the military-led government in Niamey forced French troops to withdraw last year, relations have soured further, with Niger accusing Paris of meddling in its internal affairs and undermining its sovereignty.

“I am pleased to note the decision to systematically prosecute France and Ukraine,” Toumba told delegates at the second meeting of AES justice ministers. He also praised national courts for bringing charges against international media outlets, including France 24, RFI, and TV5Monde, saying their “editorial line also includes an apology for terrorism.”

The latest statement builds on proposals raised at an earlier AES meeting in Bamako, where ministers discussed creating a Sahelian Criminal and Human Rights Court and establishing a high-security prison to try terrorism cases locally, reducing what they described as “dependence” on international justice institutions.

The AES, which brings together military-led governments in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, has frequently accused Western governments and media of undermining its security campaigns. Alongside the allegations against France and Ukraine, AES authorities have suspended broadcasts by France 24, RFI, and TV5Monde, and launched an investigation into a France 24 journalist over alleged ties to jihadist groups.

Twenty-four years later, the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks remain etched deeply in collective memory around the world.

While the destruction of the World Trade Centre, the hit on the Pentagon, and the crash in Pennsylvania are often viewed primarily through an American lens, the global casualty pattern reminds us that people from over 60 countries died that day.

The attacks on 9/11 claimed 2,977 civilian lives in the U.S., excluding the 19 hijackers. Beyond U.S. citizens, 372 foreign nationals from 61 countries were among the victims.

Countries most affected (outside the U.S.) included the United Kingdom (67 fatalities), the Dominican Republic (47), India (41), South Korea (28), Canada (24), Japan (24), and Colombia (18).

In addition to the immediate death toll, thousands more were injured, and many first responders and survivors continue to suffer long-term health effects such as respiratory illnesses, cancers, and mental health conditions.

The infrastructure loss alone was staggering; the economic damage during the first weeks ran into hundreds of billions of dollars, considering lost productivity, property damage, disrupted business operations, air travel, and tourism.

The attacks introduced a seismic shift in how markets view geopolitical and terrorism risk. Immediately after the attacks, U.S. markets were closed for several days; once they reopened, losses mounted. For example, the S&P 500 dropped by about 5% on the first trading day, and further declines followed over the subsequent weeks.

Scholars have since found that terrorist attacks correlate with higher market volatility and risk premiums, reduced foreign investment in vulnerable economies, and greater caution in sectors like travel , insurance, and infrastructure. Companies delay investment, and governments often increase spending on security, both of which have trade-offs.

The connection to today’s markets

The past few years, rife with geopolitical shocks, from war in Ukraine to tensions in the Middle East, underscore that markets are ever-attuned to risk.

The International Monetary Fund, in its recent reports , has flagged increasing geopolitical risk, including terrorism, as a factor that can lead to sharp corrections, especially in emerging markets, where volatility tends to be greater.

Investors are increasingly incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and security metrics into risk models. Countries or regions perceived as unstable or exposed to terrorist threats often face a higher cost of capital, reduced foreign direct investment, and volatility in sovereign bond yields.

The attack was orchestrated by al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Here are some facts about the event

2,753 individuals lost their lives at the World Trade Center on that day. This was a result of the intentional crashing of hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 into the North and South Towers, known as the ‘Twin Towers’ as well as the subsequent collapses of the towers.

Among those who perished, 343 were New York City firefighters, 23 were New York City police officers, and 37 were officers at the Port Authority.

The victims were from the ages of two to 85 years, with approximately 75-80% of them being men.

184 people lost their lives when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington DC.

In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 40 passengers and crew members who were onboard the United Airlines Flight 93 died. The hijackers chose to crash the plane in that location rather than their unknown target after the passengers and crew bravely attempted to regain control of the flight.

️ Four ISIS attacks in Burkina Faso within 24 hours

Between August 16–17, 2025, ISIS launched a wave of coordinated attacks in northern Burkina Faso, ambushing pro-army forces, striking villages near Gorom-Gorom, and hitting an army convoy on the Sebba–Dori road. The assaults left heavy casualties and highlighted ISIS’s aim to cripple army logistics and control key transport routes.

Pakistan wins U.S. tariff relief

The United States and Pakistan announced a trade deal Thursday, which Islamabad said would boost investment and reduce tariffs, though exact rates weren’t disclosed. Pakistan's finance ministry called it the start of a new era of economic cooperation across sectors like energy, IT, crypto, and mining. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the agreement reflected broader strategic goals beyond trade. Previously facing a possible 29% tariff, Pakistan secured a suspension ahead of the August 1 trade talks deadline, aiming for better terms than regional competitors like Vietnam (20%) and India (threatened with 25%).

Intel says Pakistan is rebuilding terror camps

Pakistan is allegedly reviving terrorism infrastructure with a new approach, an intelligence report reveals. The Pakistan Army, ISI, and other agencies are reportedly aiding major terror groups in reconstructing at least 13 camps and launchpads destroyed in Operation Sindoor, especially near the Line of Control in PoK and the Jammu border. Sites named include Kel, Shardi, Dudhniyal, Lipa Valley, and Jura, among others. Four launchpads near Jammu — Masroor, Chaprar, and a drone hub in Shakargarh — are also being reactivated using advanced techniques and funding from state entities.

Olympian killed in climbing accident

Olympic gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier died after being struck by falling rocks while climbing Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, officials said Wednesday, July 30. Bad weather delayed rescue efforts, and her body has not been recovered. Her partner survived, and local authorities said any recovery attempt would respect her family’s wishes. An Instagram post stated Dahlmeier did not want anyone to risk their life retrieving her body. German President Steinmeier paid tribute, calling her an “exceptional sportswoman” and recalling awarding her the Silver Laurel Leaf in 2018.

Pakistan keeps key rate unchanged to curb inflation

Pakistan’s central bank kept its key rate at 11% on Wednesday, defying expectations of a cut due to worsening inflation driven by higher energy prices. The State Bank cited rising gas costs and a widening trade deficit as key risks, noting that inflation pressures had intensified. All 15 analysts in a Reuters poll had predicted a rate cut. Central Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad said it was prudent to wait rather than risk reversing a premature easing move.

Pakistan repeats claims of 'resounding success' in Operation Sindoor

Pakistan dismissed India’s Operation Sindoor statements in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, July 30, as “baseless and provocative,” accusing New Delhi of spreading disinformation and jingoism. It reiterated claims of military success and warned Indian leaders to acknowledge their losses and third-party roles in the ceasefire. Islamabad also alleged India lacked evidence for the Pahalgam attack and failed to meet strategic goals, while praising its military response as decisive.

Trump urged to support Yemen's government against Houthis

The U.S. State Department condemned recent lethal Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea and urged President Trump to assist Yemen’s legitimate government against the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists. Expert Walid Phares recommended assembling ground forces loyal to the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council to reclaim strategic territories. The situation escalates as Houthi attacks continue to threaten regional security, provoking responses from Israel and potential U.S. military action.

India supports Kerala nurse facing death penalty in Yemen

The Indian government has reaffirmed support for Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse whose execution in Yemen for murder has been temporarily halted. Diplomatic efforts and legal aid are ongoing as India seeks to negotiate a blood money arrangement to prevent the death penalty. Internal family disagreements of the victim's relatives complicate negotiations, while financial support is emerging from local benefactors to facilitate a resolution.

Yemeni Forces seize major Iranian weapons shipment targeting Houthis

Yemeni National Resistance Forces (NRF) intercepted a significant Iranian weapons shipment intended for Houthi militants, containing over 750 tons of munitions, including advanced missiles and military equipment. The U.S. Central Command confirmed the seizure, which aligns with UN Security Council regulations against arms transfers to the Houthis, highlighting ongoing regional security concerns.

Iran denies accusations of sending weapons to Yemen

Iran's Foreign Ministry refuted U.S. claims regarding military equipment being sent to Yemen, labelling the allegations as unfounded and a part of a negative media campaign against Tehran. This dismissal comes amidst rising tensions regarding Iran's alleged support for the Houthi movement.

Following an attack by Houthi militants, the Greek-flagged bulk carrier Sea Champion experienced a missile strike, resulting in the sinking of the vessel. A Russian crew member is currently undergoing medical treatment in Yemen, while ten other mariners were successfully rescued and moved to Saudi Arabia. This incident underscores the escalating maritime security challenges posed by the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

The threat of terrorism is intensifying across the globe, with the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), revealing a sharp rise in the number of countries affected by terrorist attacks.

According to the report, 66 countries experienced at least one terrorist incident in 2024, up from 58 in the previous year — marking the highest level of global spread since 2017.

This concerning trend has reignited international debate over counterterrorism policies , regional instability, and the growing complexity of global security threats.

Key Findings from GTI 2025

The GTI 2025 uses a composite score based on the number of incidents, fatalities, injuries, and property damage to rank countries from most to least impacted by terrorism.

The report also reveals that the top five countries most affected by terrorism are:

The GTI is a composite index based on four key indicators: terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries, and hostages. To assess the impact accurately, it uses a five-year weighted average.

The legislation , endorsed during a Cabinet meeting following recommendations from the Ministerial Legal Affairs Committee, allows authorities to freeze assets, block financial transactions, and designate individuals or entities suspected of terrorism or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The draft will now be submitted to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for final ratification.

Under the law, decisions based on UNSC directives will be issued by the Cabinet, following recommendations from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, with powers being delegated to individual ministers, who can establish special committees to oversee enforcement.

The regulations will also ensure due process, including mechanisms for appeals and provisions allowing limited access to frozen funds for basic living expenses.

Violations will attract financial penalties ranging from KD 10,000 ($ 32,644) to KD 500,000 ($1.6 million), in addition to other sanctions under existing financial laws. Current counterterrorism laws will remain in effect unless directly overruled by the new provisions.

According to the official explanatory note, the law is designed to provide the Cabinet with a clear legal framework to meet Kuwait’s international obligations while preserving constitutional rights and protecting those acting in good faith.

The move is seen as a step toward reinforcing Kuwait’s compliance with global counterterrorism financing standards, particularly those monitored by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the United Nations.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates established the Executive Office of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) to spearhead a cohesive government strategy against financial crime, in close collaboration with regional and global partners, including the United States.

Since then, the UAE has significantly bolstered enforcement and regulatory frameworks, recording fines for AML/CTF violations from $20.6 million in early 2022 to $ 67.8 million in the first ten months of 2023, a more than threefold increase.

The UAE confiscated roughly $ 353.9 million in illicit assets in 2023, with the courts prosecuting 583 money laundering cases, achieving a high conviction rate of 92.1%.

The Indian Embassy in a statement posted on X stated that “the delegation will be meeting members of the U.S. Congress and administration, think tanks, media and policymakers to brief them on Operation Sindoor and India’s strong stand against terrorism”.

Targeted terrorism in India

According to The Hindu , the delegation aims to highlight India’s response to cross-border terrorism and underline Pakistan’s alleged links to terror groups. “India has had enough,” said Milind Deora, a delegation member, asserting India’s right to defend itself, just as the U.S. does. India needs peace. India needs strong borders. India needs security,” he added.

On dialogue with Pakistan, Tharoor said: “India can engage if Pakistan takes visible action against terror infrastructure .”

Regional Security

As the Indian delegation begins its meetings in Washington, a Pakistani parliamentary group led by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also scheduled to arrive. Speaking in New York , Zardari said his delegation would urge the U.S. to facilitate peace between India and Pakistan.

“The U.S. enjoys good relations with both countries...we will be seeking to encourage it to play its role,” he told reporters.

The visit marks the final stop of a broader outreach tour that included Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and Brazil.

Qatar-Libya partnership to fight financial crimes

Qatar’s Financial Information Unit (QFIU) and the Libyan Financial Information Unit have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral ties and boost international cooperation in combating financial crimes. The agreement aims to enhance collaboration and facilitate the exchange of financial intelligence, reflecting both countries' commitment to international standards, especially the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.

Hamas support

At The Jerusalem Post Annual Conference, Florida Senator Rick Scott stated that U.S. President Donald Trump is committed to "doing everything he can to expand peace and build relationships not just for America but for Israel." Addressing concerns over Trump’s trip to Qatar, Scott expressed strong distrust toward the Gulf nation, condemning its hosting of Hamas leaders as "despicable." He also revealed that he pushed for a review last year, while serving on the House Committee on Armed Services, of the reasons behind the continued presence of a U.S. military base in Qatar.

' State sponsor of terrorism'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party has submitted a bill to the Knesset aiming to designate Qatar as a “state sponsor of terrorism,” effectively barring it from mediating in any negotiations involving Israel. Introduced by Likud Knesset Member Moshe Saada, the bill specifically targets Qatar’s role in talks with Hamas and would prohibit countries labelled as terrorism supporters from donating to or trading with Israel. The draft legislation accuses Qatar of being “the world’s largest investor in terrorism,” alleging its support for groups including the Taliban, Islamic State, Hamas, and Hezbollah, and describes the Gulf state as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Travel and tourism

Qatar’s Travel & Tourism sector is experiencing strong growth, with projections indicating it will contribute QR124.2 billion to the national economy in 2025, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). This figure is expected to rise to QR166.6 billion by 2035, positioning the sector as a key driver of economic development. International visitors currently account for nearly 90% of travel spending, with over 75% of trips made for leisure, underscoring Qatar’s appeal as a global tourist destination. The sector is also poised to support over 350,000 jobs in 2025, growing to more than 487,000 by 2035.

Qatar Economic Forum

The fifth edition of the Qatar Economic Forum will be held in Doha from May 20–22 under the theme "The Road to 2030: Transforming the Global Economy." Organised in collaboration with Media City Qatar, the Forum will gather global leaders and top CEOs to examine the major shifts redefining the economic landscape. This year’s agenda centres on the evolving dynamics of global capital flows, with particular focus on the Gulf region’s emergence as a key financial hub. With bold economic reforms and increasingly influential sovereign wealth funds, the Gulf is transitioning from an energy powerhouse to a major driver of global finance and foreign direct investment.

The agreement, signed on Wednesday in Ouagadougou under the oversight of the Higher Council for Communication (CSC), aims to formalise the media’s contribution to national security and territorial recovery.

The pact, endorsed by representatives from radio, television, print, and online outlets, as well as the Burkinabe Media Observatory (OBM) and the CSC, outlines mutual commitments between the press, the state, and media regulators, Le Faso reports.

The document is structured around three main components. The first commits media outlets to publicise the activities of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), promote civic engagement, and contribute to national cohesion and intercommunal understanding.

The second outlines key demands from media actors toward the government , including tax reforms for media companies, full enforcement of the 2015 Right to Information law, and the establishment of a permanent consultation framework between the press and state institutions.

The third section designates the CSC and OBM as responsible for monitoring and facilitating implementation. A six-month review of the pact’s application has been proposed by CSC President Louis Modeste Ouédraogo, reported by Lefaso.net, a local news site.

After the four-hour amendment, adoption, and signing process, CSC President Louis Modeste Ouédraogo congratulated the journalists for their commitment. "We have just taken a historic, highly civic-minded step, which confirms the level of commitment of the entire national press to defending the general interest and safeguarding national unity," he said.

He also remarked that this is not an “attempt to muzzle the press.”

Director General for Radiodiffusion Télévision du Burkina (RTB), Atéridar Galip Somé noted that the state broadcaster has already aligned its editorial approach with national security priorities and described the pact as formalising an existing orientation.

The agreement follows a May 3 workshop organised by the CSC, which recommended a unified media framework to guide coverage during the security crisis.

The closures come after India launched “Operation Sindoor,” a series of missile strikes on what it described as terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The move was in response to a recent deadly attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that the airports will remain closed until at least Saturday, May 10.

Affected airports include major hubs like Srinagar, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh, Chandigarh, and Jaisalmer. The decision has disrupted hundreds of flights and created long delays, especially across northern and western India.

Airlines including IndiGo , Air India, and SpiceJet have cancelled services to the affected areas and are offering full refunds or free rescheduling.

IndiGo said in a statement, “Due to government notification on airspace restrictions, over 165 IndiGo flights from multiple airports... are cancelled until 0529 hrs IST of 10 May 2025.”

Delhi Airport, the busiest in the country, saw the cancellation of more than 140 flights on May 8 alone, local reports indicate.

International carriers such as Qatar Airways and American Airlines also altered their schedules, with some halting services to and from Pakistan due to airspace concerns.

The situation worsened on May 8 after India’s air defence systems intercepted what officials called a Pakistani missile and drone attack in the states of Jammu, Punjab and Rajasthan.

The strikes triggered blackouts, air raid sirens, and the suspension of an Indian Premier League cricket match in Dharamshala.

As security remains tight, airlines are urging passengers to arrive at operational airports early.

“We request you to allow some extra time for your journey to accommodate security checks and formalities,” IndiGo said on social media .

The government has not said when full flight services will resume.

For most of April 2025, Pakistan and India have been at each other’s throats over the Indian-administered Kashmir border.

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack occurred in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The assault resulted in the deaths of at least 26 tourists and injuries to more than 20 others. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants targeted non-Muslim victims.

Initially, the Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based, UN-designated terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility but later retracted the claim.

In retaliation, India launched "Operation Sindoor," a series of airstrikes targeting sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. One notable target was Abdul Rauf Azhar, a top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who was killed during these strikes. Azhar was allegedly involved in several terror operations, including the 2002 beheading of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl.

Pakistan responded by authorising military retaliation and placing its forces on high alert. Army Chief Asim Munir, known for his hardline stance, was given strategic control over the response. Pakistan also suspended the Simla Agreement and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft. Diplomatic ties were downgraded, with both countries expelling each other's diplomats.

The Kashmir dispute

The Kashmir region has been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan since the partition of British India in 1947. Both countries claim the region in full but govern separate parts of it. This territorial dispute has led to multiple wars and conflicts over the decades.

Mark Zuckerberg says he was almost sentenced to death in Pakistan

During a podcast conversation with Joe Rogan, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recounted a near-death sentence he faced in Pakistan due to legal claims asserting that Facebook had hosted blasphemous material, specifically a depiction of Prophet Mohammed, as reported by News18 . He said, “There are laws in different countries that we disagree with. For example, there was a point at which someone was trying to get me sentenced to death in Pakistan because someone on Facebook had a picture where they had a drawing of Prophet Mohammed, and someone said, ‘That’s blasphemy in our culture.’ They sued me and opened this criminal proceeding. I don’t know exactly where it went because I’m just not planning to go to Pakistan, so I was not that worried about it," he continued.

IMF praised Pakistan's economic reforms: Finance minister

Pakistan's Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb revealed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged Pakistan's economic reforms and its journey towards macroeconomic stability. Sharing insights from his interaction with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during a conference in Karachi, he pointed out advancements in taxation, energy, and the management of state-owned enterprises. Dunya News reported that he attributed these improvements to sound policymaking. Furthermore, Aurangzeb underscored the critical nature of addressing climate change, advocating for a policy framework enabling government facilitation while encouraging active participation from stakeholders, especially in the insurance sector, to promote sustainable economic development amidst financial hurdles.

Pakistan resumes US soybean imports after two-year hiatus

Pakistan has resumed imports of US soybeans after a two-year suspension, with an estimated 265,000 tonnes expected to arrive shortly. This development holds significant implications for the poultry sector, as it ensures a steady supply of high-quality feed. According to Profit , Zain Mahmood, Chairman of the All-Pakistan Solvent Extractors Association, indicated that this move will enhance feed conversion ratios and profitability for poultry farmers, while also reducing dependence on imports and bolstering domestic production capabilities. Experts predict that the re-establishment of these imports will stabilise feed costs and promote the growth and sustainability of the poultry industry.

Pakistan's policy on terrorism, foreign occupation remains unchanged

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its stance on terrorism and foreign occupation amidst media misrepresentation. During a briefing at the UN Security Council according to The News , the country highlighted the urgency of addressing the underlying causes of terrorism, namely poverty and foreign occupation, with a particular focus on Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan, in collaboration with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), supports a holistic counterterrorism strategy that encompasses conflict resolution and draws a clear distinction between acts of terrorism and legitimate struggles for self-determination, in alignment with UN Resolution 60/288 concerning the Global Counterterrorism Strategy.

Tunisia partners with UK to tackle irregular migration

The UK has embarked on a significant partnership with Tunisia to tackle the underlying factors contributing to irregular migration. This initiative, spearheaded by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, includes a £5 million funding package aimed at educating and equipping potential migrants in Tunisia for employment opportunities, thereby reducing the need for dangerous journeys to Europe. Additionally, $1.2 million will be directed towards the International Organisation for Migration's Assisted Voluntary Returns & Reintegration Programme, facilitating safe returns for migrants, Gov.UK reports. This initiative forms part of the UK's wider 'Plan for Change', which seeks to enhance border security, curtail human smuggling, and uplift living conditions in migrants' home countries.

11 Russians arrested on suspicion of terrorism

Tunisian authorities have detained 11 Russian nationals on terrorism suspicions near the Algerian border due to suspicious equipment and alleged ties to terrorist activities. Although no formal charges are in place, these arrests follow police findings of equipment inconsistent with their tourist claims, as per Russian media reports. The Russian embassy in Tunisia has described these individuals as tourists exploring Roman ruins in Haïdra. Watan reports that While Tunisia is generally a preferred destination for Russian tourists, Haïdra is not commonly visited by them. Despite this incident, the diplomatic relations between Tunisia and Russia remain stable, with an emphasis on enhancing bilateral ties in the agriculture and energy sectors.

State of emergency extended until the end of 2025

In a move reflecting the ongoing security landscape, Tunisian President Kais Saied has extended the state of emergency to December 31, 2025, following a previous extension that was initially set to last from January 1 to January 30, 2025. According to Al24 News , Tunisia's state of emergency was initially declared on November 24, 2015, in response to a devastating terrorist attack. On that day, a bomb exploded on a bus carrying presidential guards, claiming the lives of 12 agents.

Tunisia expresses deep concern over escalation in Congo

Tunisia has voiced significant concern regarding the escalating hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasising that the unrest poses a threat to peace initiatives and regional stability. The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reached out with condolences to the bereaved families and urged for the safeguarding of DRC's sovereignty, a de-escalation of violent actions, and adherence to the ceasefire established under the Luanda Process. President Felix Tshisekedi of DRC has promised a robust response to the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels, who currently control Goma and key infrastructure in the region. He has reiterated ongoing military and diplomatic efforts supported by the UN and regional organizations. Violent confrontations have critically affected Goma, which is home to over 700,000 internally displaced persons, reports Social News XYZ .

Italy and Tunisia strengthen ties with the Elmed energy link

A strategic partnership has been inaugurated between Italy and Tunisia focusing on the Elmed project, which aims to establish the first direct current electrical connection between Europe and Africa through a 200-kilometre submarine cable intended to integrate renewable energy sources. This collaborative effort aligns with Italy’s Mattei Plan, designed to enhance cooperation across the Mediterranean region and is spearheaded by the Italian grid operator Terna in partnership with Tunisia’s Sociéte Tunisienne de l'Électricité et du Gaz (STEG). As reported by Decode39 , The primary objective of the Elmed project is to amplify cross-border energy flows, diminish reliance on fossil fuels, and support overarching clean energy goals. The inauguration of the Terna Innovation Zone in Tunis is projected to foster knowledge-sharing and boost business growth in the renewable energy sector, providing a foundational training environment for local talent.

However, he emphasised that the move is "limited." "One of the consequences of President Biden’s decision... is that the list of countries that sponsor terrorism has been dismantled. It no longer exists," he stated in a press conference.

2024 was Turkey's hottest-year on record

Turkey has faced a dual challenge in 2024, marked by significant environmental and social developments. Firstly, the National Weather Agency announced that Turkey recorded its hottest year on record, with an average temperature soaring to 15.6°C, exceeding the previous record set in 2010. This rise further signifies a global trend, with other nations also reporting extreme temperatures. Consequently, concerns regarding climate change have intensified, particularly with the UN's World Meteorological Organisation categorising 2024 as the hottest year globally. Drought conditions have worsened, particularly in regions like the Aegean coast where rainfall was notably below normal levels, Barron's reports.

Reviewing attendance for rehearsals (If it is time, day or people)

In a notable domestic security development, Turkey's National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) apprehended Muhammed Dib Korali, an alleged mastermind behind the 2013 Reyhanlı bombings which resulted in the tragic loss of 53 lives. The operation, conducted in Syria, reflects Turkey's ongoing struggle against terrorism and its proactive measures to ensure national security. As reported by DuvaR , this significant arrest follows previous efforts, including the capture of another suspect in 2018, underscoring the persistence of these operations in response to past atrocities.

Skull found identified as 11-year-old boy, not Cleopatra's sister Arsinoë IV

Turning to historical matters, a recent examination of a skull previously thought to belong to Cleopatra's half-sister, Arsinoë IV, has revealed it belonged to an 11-year-old boy. Through advanced methodologies such as CT scans and DNA analyses, researchers confirmed the age and gender of the remains, elucidating their physical anomalies indicative of Treacher-Collins syndrome. This discovery raises intriguing questions about the identity and final resting place of Arsinoë IV, contributing to the mysteries surrounding ancient history, Gadgets 360 reports.

Turkey's Erdogan launches 'Year of the Family' with an attack on the LGBTQ+ community

In socio-political news, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the "Year of the Family," a campaign intertwined with his controversial viewpoints on societal structures. His discourse positioned the LGBTQ+ community as a perceived threat to traditional family values, prompting measures intended to bolster birth rates through various financial incentives. This declaration highlights the ongoing tensions between governmental frameworks and minority rights in Turkey, as the government maintains a recoil against criticisms and stringent measures against the LGBTQ+ demographic, as reported by ABC News .

Turkey stocks lower at close of trade; BIST 100 down 1.79%

Turkey's stock market experienced a decline, with the BIST 100 index down by 1.79%. This downturn was reflected across various sectors, particularly Wood, Paper & Printing, as well as Holdings & Investments. Conversely, Investing.com reports that some stocks managed to gain, while commodities reflected a mixed outlook with declines in gold futures and an increase in crude oil prices. The fluctuating valuation of the Turkish lira against the dollar adds another layer of complexity to the economic landscape, as investors navigate these changes.

According to FBI deputy assistant director Christopher Raia, Jabbar traveled from Houston to New Orleans on the evening of December 31 and shared several videos proclaiming his allegiance to the group. In one video, Jabbar stated that he initially intended to harm his family and friends but chose instead to focus on a larger narrative, fearing the media would overlook the "war between the believers and the disbelievers."

Speaking during an interaction with Global South , Del Re emphasised the need for a shift in global discourse to prioritise human rights as universal values.

“I find that to render human rights a priority again at the global level, we need to change our narrative,” she stated. “Many countries often tell me, ‘Don’t talk about human rights with African countries - they don’t like it.’ I find this approach very racist and unhelpful. I will always do the contrary.”

Del Re’s remarks come against the backdrop of increasing instability in the Sahel region. Countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger - recently plagued by military coups - are grappling with security crises. According to the Global Terrorism Index, these nations rank among the ten most terrorism-affected globally, with vast territories under the control of insurgents rather than central governments.

The European Union has pledged €300 billion under its Global Gateway initiative for sustainable and high-quality development projects from 2021 to 2027. Half of this funding is allocated to Africa, with a strong focus on sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel region.

This investment aims to tackle pressing issues such as governance, infrastructure, and socio-economic development. However, Del Re’s comments highlight a critical gap in the dialogue: ensuring that human rights remain integral to these efforts.

Del Re urged global actors to reinforce human rights as essential and beneficial for all societies, particularly in regions facing systemic instability. “Human rights should be seen as profitable and something from which people can benefit,” she said.

The incident, which occurred just days before the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro and the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the capital, has raised serious concerns over security in the lead-up to major international events.

The attacker, identified as Francisco Wanderley Luiz, reportedly attempted to enter the Supreme Court building before detonating an explosive device outside its doors.

Authorities said the man was unsuccessful in gaining entry to the building, and the explosion took place right at the entrance, resulting in his death. Police believe this was a suicide bombing, with Luiz acting alone, though the full motive remains unclear.

Vice Governor Celina Leão confirmed the details of the attack, describing two explosions: one originating from a vehicle, and the second at the court’s doorstep.

US cancels $1.14 billion of Somalia's debt

The USA has made strides in alleviating Somalia's financial burden by cancelling $1.14 billion of the nation's debt, representing roughly a quarter of its remaining obligations. This pivotal agreement aligns with ongoing debt forgiveness efforts aimed at Somalia's recovery from its tumultuous history of civil war and state disintegration. President Mohamud acknowledged the unsustainable nature of this debt and expressed gratitude for the US's support, with the US ambassador celebrating this agreement as a landmark effort towards stability in Somalia’s economy. As Somalia engages in initiatives like the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative, it is primed for necessary financial reforms, although governance and political stability continue to be pressing concerns for private creditors.

The attack, claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), targeted a military police barracks and a military airport, shaking a city usually spared from major attacks.

Rokia Sanogo, a banana seller, expressed the deep worry felt by many in Bamako: “We’re really worried. We miss the peace and quiet. We just don’t have a choice, because we have to go out and get the day’s meal,” she told AFP.

A restaurant owner, Soumaila Tembely pointed fingers at the authorities saying, “There is a degree of negligence on the part of the authorities. The state of the country forces them to be constantly on their guard. And it has to be said that this is nothing new. The situation has been going on for a long time.”

For Seydou Keïta, a driver, the problem lies in the lack of proper security checks in specific areas. He told the AFP, “The Garbal market in Faladie is a problem. I think they use the big buses to get to the Garbal, and then sneak through the population. Let’s do a test and search the Garbal, we’ll find some suspects.”

While the focus has primarily been on northern Mali, this recent assault shows that even the capital is not immune to the violence plaguing the country.
