US Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, said Iran “chose not to accept their terms.” The United States had asked Iran to commit permanently to never seeking a nuclear weapon and to avoid acquiring the capacity to quickly develop one.

Iran maintained that its nuclear programme is civilian, stating it is used for energy and medical purposes and is within its sovereign rights.

Uranium enrichment is not unique to Iran. Several countries have operated enrichment facilities, including Argentina, Brazil , China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Netherlands, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The US position has often been based on concerns about security and stability, arguing that other countries with such capabilities are allies or partners. Iran, however, is located in a region with multiple neighbouring states.

Identity in Xi’s China: Unity or Uniformity?: Opinion

Official rhetoric frames this unity as a necessary step towards cohesion and modernization. Nevertheless, beneath this state narrative lies a more complex question: Is China building unity or engineering uniformity?

Structurally, China is a unified multi-ethnic country. China officially recognizes 56 ethnic groups, with Han people constituting 91% of the population and the rest representing the minorities. This demographic composition has heavily influenced Beijing’s approach to governance, where unity is not merely ideological but administrative.

On March 12, 2026, China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) adopted the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress (中华人民共和国民族团结进步促进法), to promote ethnic unity and progress. Adopted at the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), it will come into effect from July 1, 2026.

The legislation aims at legally "fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation" and advancing a law-based governance of ethnic affairs. It is viewed as a transition from earlier policies of limited autonomy towards a more assimilation-driven framework. The government projects this change as a key element for advancing common prosperity and development among all ethnic groups.

The official rhetoric of cohesion and modernization is not restricted to the legal and policy realm, but it extends to the classrooms and personal choices to strengthen the “Chinese” identity. For example, the law on ethnic unity emphasizes studying Mandarin in pre-schools and directs all the national and local government authorities and private firms to prioritize the display of Chinese characters over minority languages in public settings. The law considers this an important instrument for forging a shared national identity.

CPC’s understanding of minorities is widely shaped by its priority on national security and stability. From that perspective, the new law appears to be a pragmatic step for achieving standardization across language, administration, and ideology. A strong, shared identity acts as an anchor of society, mitigating friction, providing social cohesion, and strengthening state capacity. By invoking the sense of shared identity, the new law tries to align the ethnic groups with the centralized national narrative and resist separatism in any form.

But instead of social cohesion, this engineered standardization of identity intensifies the hierarchies, conferring privileges to some over the others. This hierarchy is iterated in President Xi Jinping’s new model of governance—a “unified multiethnic state." The new system imagined the Han culture as the trunk of the tree, and the remaining 56 ethnic groups as the branches and leaves.

This metaphor of the trunk and the branches, seemingly benign, is laden with the power asymmetries and a sense of subordination of minorities in the name of nation-building rather than co-existence. Under President Xi, minorities are encouraged to bring colors to the geography of China through their culture, festivals, costumes, songs, etc., but any other identity forged through language or ideas is systematically sinicized. The new law seamlessly merges this Han-centric party ideology into the legal framework.

In the context of this centralization project, regions like Xinjiang and Tibet lie at the intersection of minority identity and geopolitical priorities of China. While the whole world is saturated with the documented reports on “re-education” centers for the Uyghur Muslims and the associated human rights violations, laws like this raise suspicions about the Party’s intentions. The extensive surveillance and cultural and religious restrictions corroborate the sense of suspicion on the minorities and, hence, Beijing’s drive towards "de-ethnicization" and enforced assimilation.

Similarly, in Inner Mongolia, the centralized implementation of Mandarin in the education system is symbolic of minority identity being re-scripted. Starting from the classrooms, laws like the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law aggressively articulate the state-sponsored singular civilizational narrative of Zhonghua, or Chinese civilization, that is predominantly Han.

Compared to democratic countries like the USA and India, China’s approach stands apart. While both the USA and India have historically embraced plurality and multiculturalism, China is experimenting differently with its minorities. Through instruments like the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, China is redesigning unity that does not exactly emerge from diversity. This law might redefine the nationhood for Xi’s China in the 21st century, but it has not evolved organically.

Where social cohesion is perceived as synonymous with national security, ethnic identity becomes increasingly ornamental and performative. Unified national identity is not simply a byproduct of national policies; it is bigger than that. National identity is composed of various ethnic, religious, and language groups that live, negotiate, and thrive together. Whether the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law can manufacture this national identity and cohesion, however, remains an open question.

The article solely represents the views of Dr. Ila Joshi, an Assistant Professor of International Studies in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, Noida, India.

At a visit to senior commanders in southern Lebanon, Netanyahu said: “What we are seeing is that we have neutralised the threat of an invasion from Lebanon through this security zone. We are also pushing back the danger of anti-tank fire and addressing it.”

He added: “There is more to do, and we are doing it… we have effectively changed the face of the Middle East . Our enemies, Iran and the axis of evil, came to destroy us, and now they are simply fighting for their survival.”

Netanyahu was accompanied by Defence Minister Israel Katz, Israel Defence Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and Northern Command head Major General Rafi Milo, according to reports.

The remarks come as the Lebanese presidency confirmed direct talks with Israel will begin on Tuesday at the US State Department in Washington, even as Israeli airstrikes continue despite a ceasefire agreed last week between the United States , Israel and Iran’s allies.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is pressing for an immediate and stable ceasefire amid a worsening humanitarian situation, while Israel is expected to demand the full disarmament of Hezbollah and tighter border security.

Separately, US Vice President JD Vance held 21 hours of talks with Iran ian officials in Islamabad, which ended on Sunday without agreement. Vance said the outcome was “bad news for Iran, much more than it's bad news for the United States."

After 16 years of Orbán, Hungary votes for change as Magyar vows return to Europe

Near-final results from the National Election Office show that Orbán’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP alliance suffered a heavy loss in the 199-seat parliament, while opposition challenger Péter Magyar and his TISZA movement secured a commanding lead.

With 98.89% of the vote counted, TISZA won 138 seats, Fidesz-KDNP secured 55 seats, and Mi Hazánk obtained 6 seats.

The outcome marks a major political shift in Hungary, where Orbán had been one of Europe’s most controversial leaders. He was widely seen as the European Union’s most autocratic leader and maintained close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His removal is expected to ease tensions within the EU, where officials have long accused him of undermining democratic systems and taking advantage of institutional weaknesses.

Orbán also faced criticism over his stance on Ukraine. He was accused of supporting actions that helped block €90 billion in European support to Ukraine, raising concerns among European leaders about Hungary’s role in the bloc.

Despite endorsements from Trump and campaign support that included visits from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, the vote appeared to be driven mainly by domestic issues.

Voters were reported to be concerned about Hungary’s economic challenges, as well as allegations of corruption and cronyism linked to Orbán’s administration. The scale of the defeat indicated widespread dissatisfaction, as TISZA was projected to dominate both the national party-list vote and many individual constituencies.

In his speech to supporters, Magyar promised to return Hungary to the main fold of European politics , pledging a pro-European Union and pro-NATO direction for the country.

“My fellow citizens, Hungary will once again be a strong ally in the European Union and NATO. Hungary will once again be a strong ally representing Hungarian interests, because our country's place for a thousand years in Europe was, is, and will be. We will rebuild and strengthen, we will place it on new foundations and expand the cooperation of the Visegrad Four wherever possible,” he said.

The result sparked celebrations in Budapest, where tens of thousands of people took to the streets.

With a projected majority above the threshold required to govern alone, Magyar is expected to form the next government , ending Orbán’s long hold on power and signalling a shift in Hungary’s position within Europe.

In remarks carried by Iranian media , Miadfar said Iran had recorded “2,115 victims under 18, including 124 under five and 70 under two,” and added that “nearly 5,000 of the victims are women, exactly 4,993, none of whom had any role in military affairs.”

Miadfar said the heaviest casualties were recorded in Tehran, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Isfahan, Kermanshah and Ilam provinces. He described one of the worst incidents as taking place at a school in Minab, saying the number of victims there included large numbers of women and minors. He also said Iran’s emergency response system had been hit hard, with “118 people ” injured among responders, “26” killed, and dozens of bases and ambulances damaged, Viory reports.

His remarks came as diplomacy between Tehran and Washington remained deadlocked. U.S. and Iranian delegations ended talks in Islamabad without an agreement after marathon negotiations, casting fresh doubt over a fragile two-week ceasefire reached earlier this week.

That ceasefire, brokered with Pakistani mediation, was tied to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Although the truce initially eased fears of a wider regional war, the breakdown in talks has renewed uncertainty over both the ceasefire and shipping through the strait.

Electoral authorities announced that voting will continue until 13 April in order to allow those affected by earlier disruptions to participate. The decision follows reports of delays and logistical issues at polling stations that prevented tens of thousands of voters from casting their ballots during Sunday’s election.

23:10 GMT: Polls close in Peru’s first-round presidential election, with exit polls pointing to Keiko Fujimori in the lead.

According to a Datum exit poll, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori is the most voted, while Rafael López Aliaga appears to be narrowly edging into second place, with only a slim margin over Jorge Nieto, suggesting a tightly contested race for the run-off.

22:44 GMT: Fuerza Popular presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori calls on electoral authorities to extend voting hours or organise a complementary vote for affected polling stations.

Fujimori urged the National Jury of Elections (JNE) and the Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) to take additional measures to ensure participation at 211 polling stations reportedly impacted by earlier disruptions. Her remarks come amid broader concerns over delays and logistical issues during election day.

The voting process is set to run for 10 hours on election day, with polls expected to open at 7:00 AM local time (12:00 PM GMT) and close at 5:00 PM local time (10:00 PM GMT).

What to know

On April 12, Peru will hold its general election, in which voters will choose a new president, two vice-presidents and all members of Congress. If no presidential candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in the first round, a run-off will be held between the top two candidates several weeks later. Voting is compulsory for citizens aged 18 to 70, although enforcement of penalties for abstention is often inconsistent.

The election takes place against a backdrop of prolonged political instability. Over the past decade, Peru has had eight presidents, reflecting a persistent cycle of institutional crisis, impeachment proceedings and governance challenges. This instability has eroded public trust in political institutions and contributed to widespread voter disillusionment.

Security concerns, economic uncertainty and frustration with political elites are central issues shaping voter sentiment. While Peru has traditionally maintained macroeconomic stability, inequality, informal employment and rising crime rates remain pressing concerns for many voters.

The political landscape is highly fragmented and crowded. A record number of 35 candidates are contesting the 2026 election, making the outcome difficult to predict and increasing the likelihood of a run-off. Polling suggests a large share of undecided voters, further adding to uncertainty.

Front-running candidates & proposals

Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular): A prominent right-wing candidate and experienced political figure, Fujimori has consistently ranked among the frontrunners. She campaigns on strengthening security, encouraging investment and restoring political stability, while maintaining a strong and loyal support base despite past electoral defeats and legal controversies.

Rafael López Aliaga (Renovación Popular): Another leading right-wing figure, López Aliaga appeals to conservative voters with proposals focused on economic liberalisation, infrastructure development and a tougher stance on crime.

Other candidates: The race includes a wide range of contenders from across the political spectrum, but none has consolidated sufficient support to clearly dominate the field. This fragmentation reflects broader dissatisfaction with traditional political parties.

Political climate & stakes

Peru’s election comes at a critical moment for its democracy. The country’s recent history of rapid presidential turnover underscores deep institutional weaknesses and ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative branches. Governance challenges have often led to confrontations, impeachments and abrupt leadership changes.

The campaign has also highlighted polarisation within Peruvian society. Candidates have sought to mobilise voters through strong rhetoric, with some framing the election as a turning point for stability and order. High-profile rallies, including those led by Fujimori, have emphasised resilience and defiance amid a competitive and uncertain race.

With no clear frontrunner and a fragmented political field, analysts expect the next president to face significant challenges in building consensus in Congress. This could limit the government ’s ability to pass reforms and address key issues such as security, economic recovery and institutional reform.

Ultimately, the election is seen as a test of Peru’s ability to break its cycle of political instability and restore confidence in its democratic system.

LIVE UPDATES

This is the end of our live coverage of the 2026 Benin presidential election. Result is expected to be announced by authorities early in the week. Follow all Global South World Channels for more updates.

19:00 GMT: Incumbent Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni has emerged as the favourite to win the 2026 elections, positioning him to be the heir to Patrice Talon, who has led the West African country for the past decade.

18:00 GMT: Benin’s civil society electoral platform says its observers recorded several irregularities during Sunday’s April 12, 2026 presidential election, according to findings presented in Cotonou by Étienne Adossou, a retired army general and member of the platform’s electoral situation room.

The platform said it deployed 1,771 observers nationwide, including 1,200 stationed at polling centres and 571 on mobile assignments. Its initial assessment, completed at 10:00 a.m., was based on observations from 1,200 polling stations.

Among the incidents reported were cases of ballot boxes allegedly containing ballots before the official start of voting, particularly in parts of the Atlantic and Zou regions.

At one polling station in Sèmè-Kpodji, observers said more than 120 ballots were found in the box before 6:45 a.m., despite no matching record of voters on the electoral register. Similar reports were also recorded elsewhere.

The platform also cited alleged cases of multiple voting in some localities in the Couffo and Mono regions.

In all, it said 109 alerts were logged and sent to the electoral situation room’s response unit, most of them linked to early openings of polling stations and other voting-day anomalies.

Despite the reported incidents, the platform said several aspects of the process generally complied with electoral rules. It noted, for instance, that all three polling officials were present in 98.38 percent of the polling stations observed.

16:00 GMT: Polling stations across the country closed at 4:00 p.m.

At the CEG Le Littoral polling centre in Cotonou’s 1st district, ballot counting began in most polling stations soon after the close of polls.

At Polling Station 6, officials of the CENA began counting ballots at 4:28 p.m., in the presence of representatives of the two tickets contesting Sunday’s presidential election.

Overall, the vote in Cotonou was conducted in a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

12:00 GMT : Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpe casts his ballot.

11:30 GMT: Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari arrived at 11:35 a.m. to cast his ballot at polling station 1. Speaking to reporters after voting, Bakari said , “I have just fulfilled my civic duty. I think it is a huge opportunity for us to make the right choice for our country. It is this choice that will determine the direction of our country over the next seven years. So it is with a very strong sense of duty that I came here today to express my civic duty.”

11:00 GMT: Aurélie Adam Soule Zoumarou, Benin’s Minister of Digital Economy, said she had fulfilled her civic duty by voting at the Kobi primary school in the Gourou district of Nikki.

“I have carried out my civic duty today by voting,” she said , urging all eligible citizens to turn out and exercise their fundamental right to vote.

10:30 GMT: Former minister Christine Adjokè Ouinsavi cast her ballot on Sunday at the Hangar public square polling centre in Adakplamè, in the commune of Kétou. Speaking after voting, she said she was pleased to have fulfilled her civic duty in a calm atmosphere. “I feel very satisfied to have carried out this act, which honours me as a citizen, and to have done so in a peaceful environment,” she said.

10:30 GMT: Vice President Mariam Chabi Talata cast her ballot on Sunday morning at the Nabissou public primary school in the Guèma district of Parakou. She urged Beninese voters to recognise the power of the ballot, saying, “Each Beninese must understand that their vote can help solve their everyday problems.” Stressing the importance of civic participation, she added that “the vote is the channel through which the citizen speaks to leaders and expresses expectations.”

10:00 GMT: President Patrice Talon and First Lady Claudine Talon have arrived at polling centre 10078, Charles Guillot School in Zongo Nima, Cotonou, to cast their ballots in Benin’s presidential election.

9:30 GMT: Benin’s Economy and Finance Minister, Romuald Wadagni, one of the presidential candidates, has cast his vote at the Agonvè polling centre in Lokossa.

9:30 GMT: Turnout was strong from the early hours in Wassa, where voting began with a particularly large crowd, including many members of the Celestial Christian community. Polling station officer Houdé Mardite said told La Nouvelle Tribune that more than 200 of the 332 registered voters had already cast their ballots. By 9:40 a.m., turnout had eased slightly, though voters were still arriving steadily.

8:30 GMT: Slight delays at the Ganmè 1 and Ganmè 2 polling stations did little to unsettle voters, with polling beginning at 7:22 a.m. after minor logistical adjustments. Despite the late start, the atmosphere remained calm and orderly.

08:00 GMT: Voting began relatively calmly at the Zanzoun Primary School polling station, although station 1 opened slightly late at 7:10 a.m. because of delays linked to the installation of staff from the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA).

07:30 GMT: Early voters in Parakou described the voting process as calm and straightforward. Alassane Idrissou, the first registered voter at his polling station, said he arrived as soon as it opened so he could cast his ballot before returning to his farm. “I am proud to be the first to vote this morning. Everything is going well, peacefully. I encourage all citizens to turn out in large numbers to vote, in peace,” he said.

07:00 GMT: Voting in Benin’s 2026 presidential election got under way on Sunday, April 12, with polling stations opening across the country.

In Abomey-Calavi, one of the country’s biggest electoral districts, the process started smoothly, with most polling centres opening on schedule at 7 a.m.

At the Kpanrou polling station, located at EPP Centre, voting materials and staff were in place early, allowing all stations to open at the same time. A similar situation was reported in Zinvié, another major district in Abomey-Calavi .

Key issues

One of the central issues is whether the next leader can sustain the country’s economic growth. Benin’s economy expanded by around 7% in 2025, driven by investments in agriculture, trade and infrastructure. However, many citizens say the benefits have not been evenly shared, with poverty persisting in rural and northern regions.

Security is another major concern, particularly in the north, where attacks by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have intensified. The region has seen deadly assaults on military posts, and tensions remain high following a failed coup attempt in December.

The election is also being watched for its implications on democracy. President Patrice Talon’s government has faced criticism from opposition groups and rights organisations over restrictions on protests, arrests of critics and the exclusion of opposition parties from parliament. Read more .

Who are the candidates?

Wadagni, 49, a former Deloitte executive, has campaigned on continuity, highlighting economic gains under Talon’s leadership. “I had the honour of managing one of your most precious assets: your money,” he told supporters during the campaign, pledging to govern with the same “seriousness and dedication.” He has promised to expand healthcare and build on infrastructure and economic reforms.

His opponent, Paul Hounkpe, 56, represents the Cowry Forces for an Emerging Benin (FCBE). A former teacher and culture minister, he has positioned himself as a moderate alternative, promising to lower the cost of living and secure the release of political detainees.

The main opposition party, the Democrats, is absent from the race after failing to secure the required backing to field a candidate, leaving Hounkpe as the only challenger. Read more .

Elections background

Benin’s president is elected through a two-round voting system and now serves a seven-year term following a 2025 constitutional amendment.

If no candidate wins more than half of the votes in the first round, the top two candidates face each other in a run-off held within 15 days. Presidents may serve a maximum of two terms, even if those terms are not consecutive.

Under changes introduced in 2019, every presidential candidate must run with a vice-presidential partner. The vice president serves the same seven-year term and is expected to complete the president’s tenure if the office becomes vacant.

To qualify, candidates must be Beninese citizens, either by birth or by having lived in the country for at least 10 years, and must be between 40 and 70 years old. They must also be of “good character and great probity”, enjoy full civil and political rights, pass physical and mental assessments, and secure nominations from at least 10% of all MPs and mayors.

20:50 GMT : Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in key parliamentary elections, marking a significant political shift after 16 years in power. Orban lost to his rival, conservative Peter Magyar, a former government insider and political newcomer who has promised “system change.” The election outcome signals a challenge to Orban’s long-standing leadership in the central European country. “The election results, though not yet final, are clear and understandable; for us, they are painful but unambiguous. We have not been entrusted with the responsibility and opportunity to govern. I congratulated the winning party,” Orban said.

19:51 GMT : After 16 years in power, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is on course to lose by a wide margin in Sunday’s vote. With more than 53 % of the vote counted, his opponent Péter Magyar was projected to win 136 seats in the 199-seat parliament, while Orbán’s Fidesz party was on track to secure 56 seats. Magyar stated on his official social media account that Orbán had called to congratulate him.

17:43 GMT : Polling stations across Hungary have closed following the national parliament election held today. The National Election Office (NVI) is expected to begin the official vote count, with preliminary results scheduled to be released later tonight.

The figure marks an increase compared to previous election years. In 2022, turnout at the same time stood at 67.80%, while in 2018 it was recorded at 68.13%. The data indicates a rise of 10 percentage points from 2022 to 2026, and a 9.67 percentage point increase from 2018 to 2026.

14:42 GMT : Voters in Budapest expressed mixed views on Sunday as they queued outside polling stations for Hungary’s parliamentary elections, following a campaign marked by allegations of foreign interference.

"We have never encountered such a disgusting campaign before," one voter said.

13:52 GMT : Less than 4 hours to go before polls close, and the voter turnout data remains high. According to the National Election Office, more than 4.9 million, representing 66.01% of eligible voters, had already cast their vote at 15:00 (1300 GMT).

13:02 GMT : Turnout in Hungary’s closely watched parliamentary election reached record levels by midday on Sunday, April 12, according to figures from the National Election Office.

More than 4 million voters had cast their ballots by 13:00 (1100 GMT), representing 54.14% of eligible voters. Authorities reported that turnout hit 54% by noon, which is more than 14 percentage points higher than at the same stage in the 2022 election.

Opinion polls suggest that the Tisza party, led by pro-European conservative Peter Magyar, is performing ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party. Magyar, a former government insider, has pledged a “system change,” and analysts say the high turnout could work in his favour.

11:33 GMT : 7 hours of voting done, 6 hours more until polls close in the pivotal Hungarian parliamentary elections. Voter turnout continues to remain high, according to the figures from the National Election Office, with over 4 million voters (54.14% of eligible voters) as at 13:00 (1100 GMT).

10:52 GMT : Magyar has described the country’s parliamentary election as a decisive moment for political change, positioning it as a choice on governance and public communication. After casting his vote, Magyar, who is the main rival of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, said the election could mark a turning point in Hungary’s political system. He stated that “today, there will be a change of system in Hungary.”

10:02 GMT : Peter Magyar, leader of the pro-European conservative TISZA party, has cast his ballot in Hungary’s closely watched parliamentary elections. The vote is being seen as a significant political moment that could bring an end to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16-year period in power. Magyar’s participation comes as voters decide whether to continue with the current leadership or support a shift in direction.

09:27 GMT : Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke to journalists at a polling centre as voters went to the polls in Budapest for the parliamentary elections, outlining his position on Hungary’s relationship with the European Union and responding to a question about Ukraine.

He responded to reports that officials in Brussels could challenge the outcome if he secured victory, stating, “To deny? No, they have to accept the intention and the will and express the opinion of the people.”

“We are members of the European Union, and this is the right which belongs to the member states,” he added. “We firmly stand on the basis of the national rights and sovereignty.”

When asked whether he would consider ceding territory to Russia in a hypothetical peace deal if he were leading Ukraine, Orban replied, “I'm lucky enough not to be Zelensky.”

08:37 GMT : Orban cast his ballot on Sunday as he faces his most significant electoral challenge in more than ten years. Footage showed Orban arriving in a van alongside his wife, Anikó Lévai, entering a polling station surrounded by journalists, voting, and then leaving the premises.

08:16 GMT : Voter turnout recorded as at 09:00 (0700 GMT) is 16.89%, representing 1,271,768 of registered voters, according to the National Election Office. Voting has been ongoing for over 3 hours since polls opened at 0400 GMT. The turnout so far has exceeded the last 4 elections

06:18 GMT : As at 07:00 local time, the voter turnout recorded was 3.46%, representing 260,556 of registered voters, according to the National Election Office.

06:02 GMT : US Vice President JD Vance accused the EU of interfering in Hungary’s elections, describing it as one of the most serious cases he has seen. Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Orban in Budapest on Tuesday, Vance said the EU had taken actions that negatively affected Hungary.

05:43 GMT : During a final campaign address in Budapest, Orban described the country’s election as a defining moment for national sovereignty, warning of foreign interference and outlining his government’s position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He said Hungary would not support Ukraine with resources or military assistance. “We will not give our children to Ukraine, we will not give our money, and we will not give our weapons,” he said. “Hungary will remain an island of peace and will continue to be the safest country in Europe after the elections.”

05:06 GMT : In the lead-up to the polls, the ruling Fidesz party saturated Hungarian streets with posters that frame the upcoming election as an existential choice between "war or peace" by depicting foreign leaders and the domestic opposition as menacing threats. Prominent billboards feature "harshly lit" and unflattering portraits of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, portraying them as the faces of a "pro-war lobby" in Brussels intent on dragging Hungary into the conflict. At the same time, opposition leader Magyar is branded as an “agent of Brussels”.

04:53 GMT : Magyar, 45, is not a typical opposition figure. He comes from Orbán’s inner circle and broke away after a corruption and pardon scandal. Since then, his Tisza Party has gained momentum. His focus is different. He talks about the economy, corruption, and the rule of law, what he calls everyday issues. He has also promised to unlock between €18 billion and €22.5 billion in frozen EU funds by restoring Hungary’s alignment with European standards. Unlike past challengers, Magyar connects with voters in rural areas through retail politics, and his right-leaning background makes him harder to dismiss. Read more

04:43 GMT : Ahead of Sunday's election, Prime Minister Orbán urged voters to back his ruling Fidesz party, warning that Hungary could lose key achievements on migration, energy protection and its confrontational stance toward Brussels if the opposition prevails.

04:29 GMT : Why Hungary's election could change more than just its government

Hungary heads to the polls in what many are calling its most important election since the end of communism in 1989.

For the first time in 16 years, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is facing a serious challenge not from the usual opposition but from someone who once stood beside him.

That challenger is Péter Magyar, a former Fidesz insider who now leads the Tisza (Respect and Freedom) Party. What looks like a domestic political contest is also being watched closely far beyond Hungary, with implications for the EU, the US, Russia, and Ukraine.

Orbán’s campaign has focused heavily on the idea of “war or peace.” He has positioned himself as Hungary’s protector, warning that “progressive forces” in the West and Ukraine are trying to pull the country into conflict. Read more

04:00 GMT : Polls open in Hungary

Polling stations open at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT) and close at 7 p.m. (1700 GMT), with results expected later in the evening. According to the National Election Office, there are over 8.1 million eligible voters.

What to know about the election and possible outcomes

The election is being hailed as the most pivotal moment for the country since the collapse of communism in 1989. Opinion polls suggest that Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his nationalist Fidesz party could lose power after 16 years to the centre-right, pro-European Union Tisza party, led by former Orban loyalist Peter Magyar.

The Key Players

How the voting works

Exactly 8,114,688 registered voters will elect 199 members of parliament. Of these, 106 are chosen in single-member constituencies under a first-past-the-post system, while 93 are selected from national party and ethnic minority lists.

Since 2010, Orbán has rewritten election laws, including gerrymandering districts and making it easier for Hungarians living abroad to vote. Ethnic Hungarians living abroad have the right to citizenship and can vote on party lists by letter. According to National Election Office data, close to 500,000 such citizens have registered for the 2026 election, and most have traditionally supported Fidesz.

The Tisza Party may need to lead Fidesz by at least six percentage points nationally just to secure a simple majority. Voters with a registered Hungarian address must vote in person, either at polling stations in Hungary or at official representations abroad.

Parties must secure at least 5% of the vote to enter parliament.

What happens after the election

President Tamas Sulyok will convene the new parliament within 30 days of the election, likely in May.

Parliament elects the prime minister by a simple majority vote. The president proposes a candidate, usually from the winning party, and parliament votes on the nomination.

If the proposed candidate is not elected, the president must submit a new proposal within 15 days. If parliament fails again to elect a prime minister, the president can dissolve parliament and call a new election.

Core campaign issues

International and geopolitical stakes

Potential scenarios

While still reliant on oil for transport and industry, Uruguay has cut costs and vulnerability to imports, positioning itself as a regional example as governments worldwide grapple with the impact of Middle East-driven energy instability.

Economy, security, democracy: What matters in Benin’s upcoming election

With the ruling coalition controlling all seats in the National Assembly and the main opposition absent from the ballot, there is fear of a shrinking political space . The ruling government, however, argues that stability is needed to sustain economic gains and address security threats.

Outgoing President Patrice Talon, who has been in power for a decade, is stepping down after reaching the constitutional term limit. His preferred successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is contesting under the governing alliance of the Progressive Union Renewal (UPR) and the Republican Bloc (BR).

About eight million registered voters are eligible to cast ballots. A candidate must secure more than 50% of the vote to win outright, or a run-off will be held on May 10.

According to the information provided, the two countries arrived with different negotiation frameworks. The United States presented a 15-point plan, while Iran submitted a 10-point plan. However, both sides have not reached a consensus on the terms under discussion.

Iran’s demands include maintaining its right to enrich uranium, the withdrawal of all US combat forces from the Middle East, the introduction of charges for shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and the removal of all sanctions .

In contrast, the United States has called for Iran to completely abandon its enriched uranium programme, stating there should be no enrichment. This position has been described as a firm condition. The US also maintains that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open for free passage, although a toll proposal has been mentioned.

Disagreements have also emerged over a reported ceasefire. Iran has stated that the ceasefire includes Lebanon, while the United States has said it does not. During the same period, Israel reportedly launched a large wave of strikes on Lebanon, resulting in over 300 deaths in one day.

Iran has stated that “the U.S. must choose between ceasefire, or continued war through Israel. It cannot have both.”

Uncertainty remains over the scheduled talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. Details regarding the meeting, including participation and agenda, are still being confirmed. Reports indicate that the Strait of Hormuz has been reclosed, adding to tensions.

If the talks proceed, they are expected to be the highest-level meeting between the United States and Iran in 47 years.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA) said more than 432 people had been killed in over 115 attacks on Chibok since November 2012.

KADA president Nkeki Mutah said more than half of the area’s towns and villages had been destroyed, with many displaced residents unable to return to their farmland.

Mutah said the attacks appeared to deliberately target the Chibok community and called for special protection from authorities at all levels. He also urged the government to support humanitarian access to Kibaku and increase military deployments to the area.

The appeal follows recent attacks on Christian communities in Chibok that local media blamed on Boko Haram. The town remains globally associated with the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls by the militant group, with dozens still missing.

Miguel Díaz-Canel told a United Nations forum that the arrival of 100,000 tonnes of Russian fuel offered temporary relief to a worsening energy crisis, while denouncing the US embargo as a “violation of human rights”. He warned that shortages persist across the island, disrupting essential services such as healthcare, and called for greater international cooperation as Cuba remains heavily dependent on imported energy.

What to know: Indonesia deports alleged Scottish crime boss Steven Lyons

Indonesian immigration authorities said Lyons , 45, was flown from Denpasar to Jakarta on April 8 before boarding a flight to Amsterdam. Spanish authorities have issued a European Arrest Warrant (EAW), and Lyons is expected to be transferred onward to Spain.

Lyons was arrested on March 28 at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport after arriving from Singapore, when immigration systems flagged him as the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.

Who is Steven Lyons?

Lyons is identified by law enforcement agencies as a senior figure in an international crime syndicate and the alleged leader of the Lyons crime group in Scotland. Police said the group has been involved in a long-running and violent feud with a rival organization for more than two decades.

Lyons previously lived in Spain before relocating to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He has been on Spain’s wanted list for about two years, following a 2024 killing linked to investigations in the country. His wife was also arrested in Dubai in a related operation, and both are wanted by Spanish authorities.

Indonesian police said Lyons is suspected of leading a transnational criminal network operating across multiple jurisdictions, including Spain, Scotland, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.

What is he wanted for?

Spanish authorities are seeking Lyons over allegations of drug trafficking, money laundering and membership in a criminal organization. Investigators from Spain’s Civil Guard estimate that funds laundered by the network exceed €30 million.

Officials said the group allegedly used shell companies across Europe and the Middle East to conceal illicit proceeds and facilitate financial flows linked to narcotics trafficking routes between Spain and the United Kingdom.

The case is part of a broader multinational investigation involving Indonesian, Spanish and Scottish authorities, with coordinated raids carried out in locations including Glasgow, Barcelona and Malaga. Additional arrests have been reported in Turkey, the Netherlands and the UAE, with support from Europol.

What Indonesian authorities said

Indonesian officials described Lyons as a “mafia boss” and Interpol fugitive, emphasizing that his deportation reflects the country’s stance against international criminal activity.

“We will not allow Indonesian territory, especially Bali, to become a haven or operational base for international criminals,” said Bugie Kurniawan, head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office.

Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya said Lyons was believed to be the leader of a “large-scale transnational criminal organisation engaged in drug trafficking and money laundering.”

Untung Widyatmoko, secretary of Interpol’s Indonesia bureau, said the group’s operations spanned multiple regions, underscoring the cross-border nature of the investigation.

Authorities added that two associates who arrived in Bali on the same flight as Lyons remain unaccounted for, with no arrest warrants currently issued against them.

Japanese premier Takaichi meets her rock ‘god’

“You are my god,” a visibly delighted Takaichi told drummer Ian Paice, handing him a pair of made-in-Japan drumsticks she had signed herself.

The meeting , which included a brief photo session with frontman Ian Gillan and other members, offered a rare reprieve for a leader facing mounting geopolitical and economic pressures.

Since taking office in October 2025 as Japan’s first female prime minister, Takaichi has contended with diplomatic tensions with China, a weakening yen, rising prices, and the risk of an energy crunch linked to instability in the Middle East.

For a moment, however, the demands of office gave way to something more personal: a lifelong fan meeting the band that shaped her musical identity.

Takaichi’s deep roots in music

Takaichi’s connection to hard rock and heavy metal runs deep. She told the band she first bought their landmark album Machine Head as a grade school student, drawn to signature tracks such as Smoke on the Water and Highway Star.

In her earlier years, the premier played keyboard in a Deep Purple tribute band in middle school before switching to drums at university, a transition that cemented her as an amateur drummer. Even today, she has joked about turning to the drums to relieve stress, quipping that she plays “Burn” after arguments at home.

Her tastes extend across the genre, with Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden also among her cited influences.

This musical background has occasionally crossed into diplomacy. In January, Takaichi shared a lighthearted drum session with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung following a bilateral summit in Nara, where the two leaders played K-pop tracks side by side and exchanged signed drumsticks in a symbolic gesture of cooperation.

Who are Deep Purple?

Formed in 1968 , Deep Purple is widely regarded as a cornerstone of hard rock and early heavy metal, helping define a heavier, more experimental sound that would shape generations of musicians.

Their relationship with Japan is particularly significant. The 1972 double live album Made in Japan, recorded during their first tour of the country, is often cited among the greatest live rock recordings — cementing their reputation as a formidable live act.

More than five decades later, that bond endures. The band is set to kick off its 2026 Japan tour on April 11 at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan.

For Takaichi, the visit was both symbolic and personal.

“I have the deepest respect for the way you continue to make rock history,” she told the group.

The event marked the signing of a major lease deal between Zaria Group and Kenya Railways Corporation, but attention briefly shifted from the agreement when Ruto openly questioned whether some of those in attendance had appreciated the formality of the setting.

Looking at the officials before him, the president remarked that he wondered “whether they are here by design or they were waylaid,” before adding , “The way they are dressed, they don't look like they knew they were coming to State House.”

Ruto said future guests who fail to meet the expected standard for official functions could be turned away at the gate. “The manner of dress of these people has no indication about the seriousness of this occasion. We take this occasion very, very seriously,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, Youth Affairs and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and Council of Economic Advisors chair David Ndii.

In remarks broadcast on state television , he said Iran would pursue reparations for wartime damage and move the management of the strategic waterway “to a new phase.”

Khamenei’s statement came despite a fragile two-week ceasefire agreed this week between Washington and Tehran, with further talks expected in Islamabad under Pakistani mediation. The truce has been presented by both sides as a temporary opening for diplomacy , but its durability remains in doubt amid continued regional tensions.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Strait of Hormuz remained open, but added that traffic was still subject to technical restrictions because of the recent war and measures imposed during the conflict. He said vessels seeking passage would need to coordinate with Iran’s military , underlining that navigation through the chokepoint remains tightly controlled.

The status of Hormuz remains central to the ceasefire, with U.S. President Donald Trump insisting that the waterway must be fully reopened. Shipping data and industry reports suggest traffic is still heavily restricted, with many vessels waiting to transit the route.

In a message released on Friday, Orbán said his government had built a border fence, curbed irregular migration and shielded families from soaring utility costs, presenting Fidesz as the “safe choice” in a high-stakes vote.

Orbán accused the opposition Tisza party of threatening stability and suggested a change of government could pull Hungary closer to Brussels and deeper into external conflicts. The election has increasingly been framed by Orbán as a choice between “peace and war,” with his campaign focusing heavily on immigration, the war in Ukraine and Hungary’s fraught relationship with the European Union .

The vote on April 12 is shaping up to be Orbán’s toughest contest in years. Opposition leader Péter Magyar and his Tisza party have gained momentum by casting the election as a referendum on Hungary’s place in Europe and on Orbán’s 16 years in power, during which critics say democratic standards have eroded and ties with Brussels have deteriorated.

Recent polling has painted a mixed picture, though several independent surveys have shown Tisza ahead among likely voters, while Orbán has retained strong backing in rural areas and among older Hungarians.

In a televised address from Caracas, Rodríguez said the recovery would be guided by the social welfare model established by former president Hugo Chávez, with a focus on supporting vulnerable groups. She also acknowledged past policy mistakes and called for reforms to avoid repeating them.

"I also ask that we correct our own past mistakes; we recognise them, we correct them, and I ask that we do not repeat them," she said.

Rodríguez said the sanctions had severely damaged the economy , leading to years of contraction, hyperinflation and widespread shortages. She noted that inflation once exceeded 300,000% and said the crisis had triggered a wave of migration, with many professionals leaving the country in search of better opportunities.

Rodríguez has been serving as acting president since January, after U.S. forces captured former president Nicolás Maduro, a move that plunged the country into political uncertainty.

At a press briefing, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, said the loss of civilian life was unacceptable and called on all parties to use diplomatic channels, cease hostilities and recommit to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

"The ceasefire between the US and Iran offers an opportunity to prevent further loss of lives between Lebanon and Israel. We urge all concerned to abide by the ceasefire. Now is the time to pursue talks to resolve outstanding differences and work towards a permanent ceasefire and a long-term solution to the conflict," Haq said.

He also added that UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon continued to be affected by the violence . It said six UNIFIL personnel were injured on Thursday after rocket and artillery fire near Atteri in Sector West, with one suffering a shrapnel wound and five others affected by acoustic trauma. UN vehicles were also damaged.

Separately, the UN said Israeli forces briefly detained a UNIFIL peacekeeper after blocking a logistics convoy, before releasing the person less than an hour later following direct intervention by mission officials. The organisation said the detention violated international law and called for an immediate end to any intimidation or interference with its peacekeeping operations.

Speaking at his general audience in St Peter’s Square, the pontiff said lasting peace could only come through dialogue, not continued fighting.

The pope also invited Catholics to join him for a prayer vigil for peace at St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 11, saying the current moment required prayer as delicate diplomatic efforts continued. He has repeatedly urged world leaders to choose negotiation over war in recent weeks.

His remarks came after Washington and Tehran announced a provisional two-week ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, under which Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and both sides were expected to continue talks in Islamabad. President Donald Trump said he had suspended threatened attacks on Iran as part of the deal.

The truce has been welcomed internationally as a chance to step back from a wider regional war, though its durability remains uncertain amid fresh tensions involving Lebanon and shipping through Hormuz. Global markets initially rallied on the news , while diplomats cautioned that only sustained negotiations could turn the pause into a lasting settlement.

In hard-hit neighbourhoods, residents said they were being forced to bail water out of their homes by hand, often relying on neighbours for help. Maria Nunes, a flood victim, said families were enduring severe hardship as water filled their houses and little assistance arrived. She said residents sometimes had to contribute money themselves to buy fuel for pumps used to drain flooded roads.

Footage showed damaged homes, waterlogged rooms and household items floating in muddy floodwater. Another resident, Nelson Joao Adriano, said entire homes, including bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms, had been inundated, and called for families to be relocated from flood-prone areas.

Victims also criticised the authorities for failing to respond adequately, saying the stagnant water posed serious health risks and had made daily life unbearable. While the death toll from the floods rises, residents say they feel abandoned and are demanding urgent support.

Speaking on Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had consistently called for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy to end the conflict . He said New Delhi expected “unimpeded” freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.

The comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, on the condition that Tehran immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz. India has also said it has been in close contact with regional stakeholders to ensure safe maritime transit, with several Indian vessels crossing the waterway safely in recent days.

Jaiswal added that India remained focused on the safety of its citizens in the region, with evacuation efforts continuing through neighbouring countries as airspace restrictions complicate travel .

Speaking at the ceremony, Bozell said he brought greetings from U.S. President Donald Trump and described it as “a great honour and a privilege” to serve in South Africa. He said he had already grown fond of the country after two months in post.

"I bring you my letter of credence as well as my letter of recall from my predecessor. Mr. President, before I arrived here, I cannot tell you how many people told me that, in short order, I'd fall in love with the country. It's only taken two months, and I can confirm that that has happened," he said.

Bozell said the United States and South Africa shared important values and interests, and pledged to build on mutual respect and cooperation. He also praised South Africa’s Constitution, telling Ramaphosa he hoped to take bilateral relations “to places they’ve never been before.”

"We are two nations with great shared values and interests. Perhaps not enough people understand this, but you, Excellency, were the primary author of your Constitution. You do understand that," he added.

South Africa has in the past month called in the new US ambassador, Leo Brent Bozell III, less than a month after he arrived in the country, after comments he made about the struggle song “Kill the Boer” sparked a diplomatic backlash.

Niangqing Herbal Bar, which opened in 2025, uses traditional diagnostic techniques such as pulse-taking and tongue observation before producing what it calls a “body constitution report”. Staff then use the report to create a drink tailored to the customer, based on traditional Chinese medicine ’s classification of nine body constitution types.

Co-founder Zhou Xingxing, a former student at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said the concept was designed to make TCM culture more accessible to younger, wellness-focused consumers. He said customers receive a consultation from a TCM doctor before taking their report to the bartender, who prepares a cocktail using herbal ingredients and Chinese yellow wine.

TCM doctor Lu Sheng said the bar focuses on lifestyle advice and health maintenance rather than medical treatment, with most ingredients chosen from substances that can also be used as food. Visitors described the concept as novel and marketable

Footage from Zinder on Monday, April 6, showed long lines of tricycles and motorcycles waiting for fuel. Residents said the shortages were becoming increasingly difficult to manage, with many forced to wait for hours and sometimes leaving empty-handed. Some customers said stations often ran out of fuel before they could be served, while others were turned away because of closing times or equipment problems.

Local reports said rationing measures now limit drivers to 20 to 30 litres per car and 5 to 10 litres for tricycles, while essential service vehicles are being prioritised. Commuters voiced frustration that shortages were hitting an oil-producing country that also refines fuel in Zinder.

The crisis comes as global oil prices rise following disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Although Niger has produced oil since 2011 and the Zinder refinery supplies about 1.1 million litres a day, demand has outstripped supply. The pressure has also been worsened by higher fuel prices in neighbouring Nigeria , which have reduced the flow of smuggled fuel that many communities in southern Niger have long relied on.

Across Budapest, that message is hard to miss. Posters show Volodymyr Zelensky and Ursula von der Leyen as threatening figures, often described as part of a “pro-war lobby.” Orbán has also claimed—without evidence—that Ukraine could attack Hungary. His allies have gone further, branding Magyar as an “agent of Brussels.”

Magyar, 45, is not a typical opposition figure .

The outcome matters on several levels. At home, Hungary is ranked as the most corrupt country in the EU, with most of its media and judiciary under state control. A Magyar win would aim to reverse that and dismantle what critics call a “soft autocracy.”

In Europe, Orbán has built a reputation as the EU’s “disruptor-in-chief,” often blocking aid to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. Some EU leaders are now even considering suspending Hungary’s voting rights.

There are also wider geopolitical stakes. Hungary has been accused of acting as Moscow’s “mole” inside the EU, with leaked calls suggesting coordination with Russian diplomats. If Orbán loses, Russia could lose a key ally, and Ukraine could find stronger support.

In the US, Orbán has backing from Donald Trump and has hosted Vice President JD Vance, but some US Senators are pushing sanctions over Hungary’s ties to Russian energy.

Even with polls putting Tisza ahead by 10 to 12 points, victory is not certain. Orbán has reshaped the system, rewriting the constitution and gerrymandering districts to favour Fidesz.

Experts say Magyar may need at least a six-point lead just to win a majority. The campaign has also been hit by claims of Russian-backed disinformation, known as “Gamechanger,” aimed at damaging the opposition and even suggesting staged assassination plots.

Prices have risen by up to 70 per cent in recent weeks, slowing sales as consumers grow more cautious and traders struggle with higher costs. The sharp increase is linked to Indonesia’s reliance on imported materials and global disruptions driven by Middle East tensions, which have pushed up oil prices and supply costs. Small businesses and lower-income households are feeling the greatest impact, raising concerns over a wider supply chain crisis.

Why the ICC prosecutes the Global South — but struggles with the Global North

This debate sharpened after US President Donald Trump threatened to destroy Iranian bridges and power plants unless Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday, 8 p.m. (Eastern Time), then said he was “not at all” concerned that such action could amount to war crimes.

But can’t they really?

About the ICC

The ICC was created by the Rome Statute as a court of last resort. It prosecutes individuals, not states, and covers four core crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression.

It is meant to step in only when national authorities are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute. Its jurisdiction is also limited. In general, the court can act when the alleged crimes were committed on the territory of a state party, by a national of a state party, or when the UN Security Council refers a situation to it.

As of now, 125 countries are parties to the Rome Statute : 33 African States, 19 Asia-Pacific States, 20 countries from Eastern Europe, 28 Latin American and Caribbean States, and 25 Western European and other States.

Important to note: the United States and Israel are not parties to the statute.

Most of ICC’s defendants are from the Global South

That legal architecture helps explain why the ICC’s public defendants list remains heavily weighted towards weaker or more internationally exposed states.

ICC’s website currently lists 74 defendants. The roster is dominated by African situations, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (6), Uganda (5), Sudan (7), the Central African Republic (12), Kenya (9), Libya (14), Côte d’Ivoire (3) and Mali (3). The remainder stretches across places such as Afghanistan (2), Georgia (3), Ukraine (6), the State of Palestine (3) and the Philippines (1).

An overwhelming majority — 51 defendants — face war crimes allegations. These include Sudan’s Abd-Al-Rahman, who is suspected of 31 counts of war crimes and is in ICC custody, and Libya’s Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri, better known as “El Hishri.”

Warrants for Netanyahu, Putin

That is not to say the court has never tried to go after bigger fish.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is the subject of an ICC arrest warrant for the alleged war crimes of unlawfully deporting and transferring Ukrainian children.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant are also the subjects of ICC warrants after judges said there were reasonable grounds to believe they bore criminal responsibility for, among other acts, starvation as a method of warfare, murder, persecution and intentionally directing attacks against civilians in Gaza.

Those cases show that the court can, at least on paper, move against leaders backed by strong states. But a warrant is not an arrest, and the court has no police force of its own. It depends on state cooperation.

Can they get Trump?

The Iran war illustrates the next barrier. There are already credible traces of conduct that international humanitarian law treats as potentially criminal.

For instance, attacks on civilian installations can constitute war crimes if they fail the tests of military necessity, distinction and proportionality. Trump’s threats against bridges and power plants therefore fall squarely within such conduct.

In a joint letter published on April 2, more than 100 US-based international law experts expressed “serious concerns about violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including potential war crimes.”

They cited Trump’s threats to Iran’s energy infrastructure, as well as the February 28 strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, which resulted in the deaths of at least 175 people, many of them children.

“The strike likely violates international humanitarian law, and if evidence is found that those responsible were reckless, it could also be a war crime. The strike is among the deadliest single attacks by the U.S. military on civilians in recent decades,” the lawyers noted.

So can the ICC get Trump or Netanyahu? Netanyahu is already within the court’s reach because the judges have said the court has jurisdiction in the State of Palestine and have rejected Israel’s challenge.

Trump is a different case.

Washington has gone beyond non-membership and moved to punish the court itself. In a February 2025 order, the White House called the ICC’s actions against the US and Israel “illegitimate and baseless,” said neither country had accepted the court’s jurisdiction, and authorised sanctions, asset blocking and visa restrictions against ICC officials and those assisting them.

In practice, that leaves the ICC confronting the same problem critics have long identified: it can name the powerful, but it is far better equipped to jail the weak.

Speaking in Kiskundorozsma on Monday, April 6, Szijjarto linked the incident to what he described as Ukraine’s broader energy objectives in Europe.

“Ukrainians have clear objectives. The goal of the Ukrainians is to oust Russian gas from Europe and exclude Russian oil entirely. To this end, they have taken political steps, and even legal actions have been initiated, as we must not forget that the first such violent event related to energy supply was the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline,” he said.

He further alleged a pattern of actions targeting energy infrastructure.

“Ukrainians blew up the Nord Stream pipeline, and then they closed the major natural gas pipeline through their territory,” Szijjarto continued. “In recent weeks, they attacked several times with dozens of drones the TurkStream pipeline on Russian territory. And now, it aligns with this that yesterday the Serbian authorities prevented a terrorist attack in which they intended to blow up the Serbian section of the TurkStream pipeline.”

The Nord Stream pipeline explosions in 2022 were blamed on Ukraine, with German investigators identifying Ukrainian divers involved. The United States was also implicated in some media reports, while both Washington and Kyiv denied involvement.

Szijjarto stated that TurkStream plays a key role in Hungary’s energy supply, accounting for about 56% of its daily gas needs. He announced plans to deploy military protection along the 250-kilometre pipeline.

Speaking from Tehran on Monday, April 6, Baqaei questioned the location and intent of the operation. "The distance between the area where it was claimed the American pilot was located in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and the area where they attempted or intended to deploy forces is significant in central Iran," Baqaei said.

"Therefore, the possibility that this was a deception operation to steal the enriched uranium should not be dismissed, but as I said, what is clear is that the result of this operation was nothing more than Second Tabas,” he added. The reference to "Second Tabas" relates to the failed 1980 US mission to rescue hostages in Tehran.

US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that two US airmen had been rescued after their F-15 aircraft was shot down over Iranian territory. He described the mission as "one of the most daring search-and-rescue operations in US history.”

During a press interaction, a reporter referenced Trump’s earlier remarks, saying: “Mr President, yesterday in your Truth Social, you called the Iranians crazy bastards.” Trump confirmed the statement, replying, “True.”

The journalist then asked: “What is your response to critics who say that it is your mental health that should perhaps be examined as this war continues?”

Trump responded: “I haven't heard that. But if that's the case, you're going to have to have more people like me, because our country was being ripped off on trade, on everything, for many years until I came along.”

The exchange followed a post Trump made on Sunday, April 5, in which he set a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He wrote: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.”

Ten Years, eight presidents: Peru’s persistent cycle of political instability

Beginning with the end of Ollanta Humala’s administration in 2016, the country entered a phase defined not by regular democratic continuity but by repeated institutional disruptions. Since then, leadership has passed through Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Martín Vizcarra, Manuel Merino, Francisco Sagasti, Pedro Castillo, Dina Boluarte, and José Jerí.

The transition from Humala to Kuczynski in 2016 initially followed a standard electoral process, yet it also marked the beginning of a more fragmented political era. Kuczynski governed with a hostile Congress, which repeatedly sought his removal. Mounting pressure linked to corruption allegations ultimately led to his resignation in March 2018, setting a precedent for executive vulnerability under congressional scrutiny.

His successor, Vizcarra, inherited both the presidency and the institutional conflict. His decision to dissolve Congress in 2019, though constitutional, intensified political polarisation. In November 2020, Congress removed him on grounds of “moral incapacity”, a constitutional provision that has since become central to Peru’s instability. This mechanism, broadly defined and politically contested, has enabled repeated presidential removals without the need for criminal conviction.

The short-lived presidency of Merino, lasting only five days, highlighted the limits of congressional legitimacy when faced with public opposition. Mass protests forced his resignation, leading Congress to appoint Sagasti as a transitional president. Sagasti’s administration restored a degree of stability, overseeing elections and completing a full interim mandate, which remains an exception in an otherwise turbulent decade.

The election of Castillo in 2021 once again raised expectations of political renewal. However, his presidency was characterised by persistent confrontation with Congress, frequent cabinet changes, and ongoing investigations. The crisis culminated in December 2022, when Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and was immediately removed from office. His vice-president, Boluarte, assumed power, but her tenure was also marked by protests, governance challenges, and eventual removal by Congress in 2025.

The appointment of Jerí as interim president in 2025 continued the pattern of short-lived administrations. His removal in early 2026, following allegations of misconduct, reinforced the perception of systemic instability rather than isolated crises. Across these transitions, a consistent pattern emerges: presidents rarely complete their mandates, and leadership changes are driven more by institutional confrontation than by electoral cycles.

Several structural factors explain this phenomenon. Peru’s fragmented party system weakens executive support in Congress, while the constitutional provision of “moral incapacity” provides a flexible tool for removal. Additionally, corruption investigations have affected multiple administrations, further eroding public trust. These conditions create a political environment in which governance is often secondary to survival.

As Peru approaches new general elections , the primary expectation is not necessarily political transformation but institutional stabilisation. The key challenge for future leadership will be to establish a functional relationship between the executive and legislative branches. Without reforms that clarify constitutional ambiguities and strengthen party systems, the cycle observed over the past decade is likely to persist, regardless of electoral outcomes.

Known as ‘Kraprao Wat Jai’, the establishment has seen a surge in visitors after videos of its service style circulated online.

Customers are presented with meals in items such as plastic stools, buckets, bottles, and even weighing scales. The unusual presentation has become central to the dining experience, with many visitors arriving out of curiosity.

"They have served my food in a watering can, which is quite exciting and unusual. The taste is great, which I really like," said one customer.

The concept relies on unpredictability, with diners unsure of how their meals will be served each time they visit. This element of surprise has contributed to the restaurant’s growing popularity.

"It feels quite adventurous to eat at Kraprao Wat Jai, as we’re always excited to see how they serve the food. Today, it was presented on a small child’s chair, and it tasted very good," said another consumer.

Co-owner Baiplu said the idea began informally when her partner, Pum, experimented with unusual serving methods as a joke among friends. The approach quickly gained attention and became part of the restaurant’s identity.

"This place has been open for about 9-10 years," she said, adding, "Our customers come from all over, mainly from out of town, including students and a wide variety of people ."

Food may be served in items ranging from small bathtubs and birdcages to metal pans and large jars, reinforcing the unpredictable nature of the experience.

Despite the focus on presentation, diners continue to praise the flavour of the Pad Krapow, which is available with pork, beef, or seafood.

Orders are placed by using a rubber chicken to call staff, while the simple, street-style setting continues to attract both local residents and tourists.

How dogs became Kim Jong Un’s diplomatic and propaganda tool

State media photos showed Kim inspecting the Hwasong Pet Shop, part of a large-scale housing development in the capital, alongside his wife and daughter, widely believed to be Kim Ju-ae.

KCNA said the visit was part of efforts to improve living standards and promote a “socialist civilisation.”

During the tour, Kim pointed to a rise in pet ownership in Pyongyang and other areas, and called for expanded production of pet-related goods, including food, grooming tools and veterinary medicines.

He wanted to develop consumer-oriented industries, a notable emphasis in an economy still constrained by international sanctions.

The appearance also offered a rare glimpse of a more domestic, curated image of the North Korean leader — one that contrasts with the state’s usual focus on military capability and strategic strength.

Yet animals, particularly dogs, have long played a role in Kim’s political signalling.

In 2018, following a summit in Pyongyang, Kim gifted two white Pungsan hunting dogs — a breed indigenous to North Korea — to then South Korean president Moon Jae-in. The move was widely seen as a gesture of goodwill during a brief thaw in inter-Korean relations.

The dogs, named Gomi and Songgang, were initially hailed as symbols of reconciliation. However, their fate later reflected the fragility of such diplomacy. In 2022, they were transferred to a South Korean zoo after a dispute over the cost of their upkeep between Moon and the administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

More recently, Kim extended a similar gesture to Russian President Vladimir Putin, gifting him a pair of Pungsan dogs in 2024 as ties between Pyongyang and Moscow deepened.

Kim ultimately leverages such gestures to serve dual purposes: reinforcing diplomatic ties while projecting a softer imagery of leadership.

From symbolic gifts to staged public appearances, dogs have become an unlikely but consistent feature of Kim’s political playbook.
