China Railway said trains connecting Beijing and Pyongyang will restart on Thursday, running four times a week. A second service linking the Chinese border city of Dandong with the North Korean capital will operate daily.

The routes had been suspended since early 2020 when North Korea sealed its borders at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, cutting off most cross-border travel.

A strategic railway corridor

The reopening revives a railway corridor long viewed as both a logistical and political bridge between Beijing and Pyongyang.

The Beijing–Pyongyang service is one of the few direct international rail connections into North Korea. Meanwhile, the Dandong route feeds into the P’yŏngŭi Line, a major North Korean trunk railway linking Pyongyang with Sinŭiju on the Chinese border.

A bridge over the Yalu River connects Sinŭiju to Dandong and integrates the line with China’s wider rail network, making it one of the most important overland routes between the two countries.

Chinese authorities have described the trains as a “moving link” strengthening the long-standing friendship between China and North Korea.

Limited access for travellers

Despite the resumption, travel remains tightly controlled.

Travel agents said tickets are currently available only to passengers holding valid visas. This includes Chinese citizens working or studying in North Korea and North Koreans travelling abroad for work, education or family visits.

Tickets for the first train departure reportedly sold out quickly, with passengers including entrepreneurs, government officials and journalists.

International travellers may be allowed on certain carriages of the Beijing–Pyongyang service, though tourism access remains limited.

North Korea’s gradual reopening

The rail resumption comes as North Korea cautiously emerges from years of pandemic isolation.

The country began allowing a limited number of foreign tourists to enter again in 2024. Authorities have also promoted new projects, including a seaside resort, as part of efforts to revive the country’s small tourism sector.

Before the pandemic, Chinese visitors accounted for the majority of foreign tourists entering North Korea.

A diplomatic signal?

The reopening also coincides with renewed diplomatic messaging between the two governments.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week told Chinese President Xi Jinping that cooperation between their countries would grow closer as they pursue what he described as a shared socialist cause.

Kim’s message came in response to a congratulatory letter from Xi after the North Korean leader secured another term as general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party.

While North Korea has strengthened military ties with Russia , its relationship with China remains a crucial economic and political lifeline — one now visibly reinforced by trains once again crossing the border.

Why Uber has pulled out of Tanzania after nearly a decade

In a message sent to customers, Uber said its services officially stopped on January 30, 2026, and that the app would no longer be available in Tanzania. “This chapter comes to an end, but our gratitude to you remains,” the company said , without giving further details about the decision.

Uber launched in Tanzania in June 2016, starting in Dar es Salaam as part of its broader expansion across Africa. The app quickly gained popularity for introducing digital ride-hailing, competitive pricing and cashless payment options.

But Uber’s experience in Tanzania has been marked by regulatory and market challenges.

In April 2022, the company suspended operations after the government introduced new rules, including caps on fares and limits on commissions charged to drivers. Uber said at the time that the regulations created an environment that was difficult for its business model.

“Current regulations… have been a challenge to our business ,” the company told users, adding that it hoped to reach an agreement with authorities.

Uber resumed services in early 2023 after adjusting its operations, but it continued to face pressure from ongoing regulation and growing competition from local and regional ride-hailing platforms.

The company’s full exit in 2026 highlights the difficulties international tech firms can face in markets with tight transport controls and rapidly evolving competition.

The company still operates in about 80 countries worldwide, including 11 in Africa.

The world’s longest bridges and how Bahrain is building its legacy

Bridges are more than just concrete and steel, as they are symbols of connection, ambition, and progress. Around the world, engineers have pushed the limits of design to link islands, cities, and entire economies.

The latest rankings show China dominating the list of the world’s longest bridges, while smaller nations like Bahrain continue to prove that strategic infrastructure can matter just as much as size.

According to recent data compiled by World Visualized , the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China remains the longest bridge on Earth, stretching an astonishing 164.8 kilometres.

It’s followed closely by the Changhua–Kaohsiung Viaduct at 157.3 kilometres and the Tianjin Grand Bridge at 113.7 kilometres, all part of China’s high-speed rail network. These mega-projects, which took years to complete, are celebrated not just for their scale but for their role in supporting one of the world’s busiest transportation systems.

But while China leads in sheer length, other regions are investing strategically in connectivity. The King Fahad Causeway, for instance, remains one of the Middle East ’s most important links. Spanning 25 kilometres, it connects Bahrain and Saudi Arabia across the Gulf of Bahrain. Since opening in 1986, it has transformed trade, tourism, and the labour movement between the two kingdoms

The Kingdom of Bahrain, though small, continues to prioritise high-impact infrastructure . The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) outlines in its vision that transport is central to achieving Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, a national strategy aimed at sustainable development and diversified growth.

From roads and bridges to ports and smart mobility systems, Bahrain is positioning itself as a Gulf logistics hub rather than competing for the world’s longest spans.

Among Bahrain’s notable projects is Durrat Al Bahrain, a luxury island development featuring 13 bridges totalling 3.5 kilometres. These bridges may be modest in length compared to Asia’s megastructures, but they represent a commitment to modern urban design and connectivity within the kingdom.

Beyond what already exists, Bahrain’s strategic location continues to attract regional transport investments. The long-discussed Qatar–Bahrain Causeway, projected to stretch about 40 kilometres, could soon become one of the world’s longest sea bridges. Once completed, it would link Bahrain directly to Qatar, easing travel, enhancing trade, and strengthening regional cooperation.

A Predictive Mobility study shows that a 10% reduction in ticket prices could raise demand from 22.3 million to over 30 million passengers annually. However, currently, taxes account for 25 - 30% of airfares, with passengers on the Entebbe - Nairobi route paying up to $100 in levies on return tickets costing between $300 and $350. Departure taxes also vary widely across the region, from $77.5 in Kinshasa to $31 in Addis Ababa. Central and West Africa have more favourable regimes, with average savings of $12.68 and $10.12 per passenger, respectively, according to the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).

Analysts say the high charges make African carriers less competitive than foreign airlines operating from regions with lower taxation . East African officials are now pushing for reforms. Andrea Aguer Ariik, EAC Deputy Secretary General, has urged member states to fast-track the signing of EAC Air Transport Market Liberalisation Regulations, which would open up regional skies under a multilateral framework.

“Once adopted by the SC-TCM and thereafter signed and ratified by the partner States, the air transport market in the EAC will be fully liberalised. Partner states will subsequently negotiate their regional air transport bilateral arrangements under the Multilateral Air Services Agreement,” said Ariik during the 19th Meeting of Directors General of Civil Aviation and Airports Authorities.

Worry looms as hefty 50% US tariffs take effect August 6

Brazil is bracing for impact as the US’s unprecedented 50% tariffs on most imported goods take effect on August 6. Only 700 goods will be exempted from the sweeping tariff, which is projected to affect R$175 billion of Brazil’s annual export revenue. US President Donald Trump’s move places additional pressure on Brazil’s already strained economy, which is facing a 76.1% debt-to-GDP ratio and a R$104 billion fiscal deficit.

Supreme Court orders house arrest of ex-president Bolsonaro

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been placed under stricter house arrest after violating earlier court-imposed restrictions related to his ongoing coup plot trial. The Supreme Court had previously barred Bolsonaro from using social media and confined him to nighttime and weekend house arrest. However, he continued to communicate through the social media accounts of his children and supporters, prompting the court to tighten the measures. The development comes as the US prepares to enforce a 50% tariff on nearly all Brazilian exports — a move by President Donald Trump that observers link to the alleged political persecution of Bolsonaro, with whom he has close ties.

Pushback from Brazil as WTO intervention sought over US tariffs

Brazil is preparing to formally contest the US’s unprecedented 50% tariffs at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) a day before they take effect on August 6. These tariffs impact roughly 35% of Brazil’s exports to the US, although key products like energy and certain minerals are excluded. Brazil’s Chamber of Foreign Trade approved a proposal to launch formal consultations at the WTO, the first step in a dispute resolution process. The council of ministers has referred the matter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will decide when to proceed.

Brazil launches $90 billion plan to transform urban transport

Brazil has unveiled a historic R$500 billion (US$90 billion) national plan to overhaul urban public transport over the next 30 years, targeting 21 major metropolitan regions that house nearly half the country’s population. According to a new study by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and the Ministry of Cities, the strategy aims to add 2,500 kilometres of rapid transit — including metro, rail, BRT, and bus corridors — by 2054. The goal is to ensure 80% of residents live within one kilometre of a transit station.

Lula condemns US tariffs as ‘economic blackmail’

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has accused the US of using economic pressure for political purposes, calling the 50% tariff on Brazilian goods “economic blackmail.” Speaking at a Workers’ Party event in Brasília, Lula condemned the move by US President Donald Trump and said Brazil would not bow to “unequal treatment.” The tariff, set to take effect on 6 August, would be the highest the US has imposed on any country.

Driving worldwide has seen an evolution over the years.

It’s rather easy to imagine driving in the left or right directions but mixed-direction driving may sound rather wild right? While the latter barely exists today, many countries around the world drive either on the left or the right depending on traffic rules, and usually, cars in the country are made to suit this plan or imported with this in mind.

About 30% of the world’s countries mandate left-side driving and another 70% stay to the right.

This makes it easy for smoother and safer transportation. Here is a compilation of some European countries that switched from left to right driving directions and how it impacted their roads and people.

Spain

A hybrid driving system still existed in Spain in 1918 despite the country switching to Right-Hand Traffic (RHT). Drivers in Madrid were still driving on the left despite the law but by 1924, a national law was introduced, making it mandatory for every driver to switch to RHT.

Italy

Italy started driving on the right in the 1890s, and it became mandatory with the 1912 highway code. Cities with trams could keep driving on the left but by 1927, all cars in Italy began driving on the right.

Portugal

The change happened on the same day across Italy and its colonies. But areas next to countries that drove on the left like Portuguese East Africa (now Mozambique) were not included.

Austria

Between 1921 and 1935, the Austrian regions of Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Carinthia, and part of Salzburg switched to driving on the right. When Germany annexed Austria in 1938, Hitler mandated an overnight change for the rest of the country. Austria changed to right-hand driving completely by 1938.

Despite the physical and mental toll, she finds strength in providing for her family. “Sometimes I don’t even feel like waking up. But when I remember my responsibilities, I push through. The moment I start my bus, I find my courage.”

Balancing work and home life remains a challenge. “No matter what you do, you’re still expected to cook, care for the children , and prepare for the next day,” Okoli explained. “I work until midnight and then start again early in the morning.”

More women are joining the industry, she noted, with many approaching her for driving lessons. “It’s not about enjoying driving—it’s about survival, about putting food on the table.”

Uzbekistan launches project to procure 200 electric buses

A project has been launched to acquire 200 electric buses and the associated charging stations for the capital, in line with Uzbekistan’s green economy and environmental goals under the "Uzbekistan-2030" strategy. This initiative supports the nation’s commitment to combating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality. According to Daryo , after a competitive bidding process among three Chinese companies—BYD Auto Industry, Yutong Bus, and Zhongtong Bus Holding—Yutong Bus was selected for providing the optimal solution that met all project requirements.

Uzbekistan reports 2 inmate deaths within a week

Uzbek authorities have confirmed that two individuals died in the country’s prisons last week. Both incidents took place in penal colonies in the Tashkent region, near the capital. One fatality involved a 21-year-old man who reportedly suffered a heart attack and acute pancreatitis, while the other was a 41-year-old inmate who sustained fatal injuries during repair work at the prison. As reported by VOA , The Chief Prosecutor’s Office in Uzbekistan has launched an investigation into both cases.

Uzbekistan welcomed over 37,000 tourists from Germany

According to the Statistics Agency, German tourism to Uzbekistan saw a marked increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. A total of 37,500 German tourists visited the country—7,918 more than during the same period last year. Zamin reports that their trips were primarily for tourism (31,291 visitors), followed by visiting relatives (4,524), business trips (1,580), commercial visits (80), education (43), and medical treatment (8). These figures highlight a growing interest in Uzbekistan among German travellers and underscore the importance of family and business connections between the two nations. In the era of globalization and expanding international relations, these statistics serve as a key indicator of strengthening cultural and economic ties.

Uzbekistan work visa now open for Pakistanis

Following a recommendation from the Pakistan Embassy in Tashkent, the federal government has lifted the ban on Pakistani workers seeking jobs in Uzbekistan. The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment has directed all Protectorates of Emigrants to register workers for Uzbekistan. Previously, Pakistan had halted work permits due to poor working conditions and unpaid wages, ARY News reported. This decision comes ahead of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official two-day visit to Uzbekistan in late February 2025.

Uzbekistan eyes $60M export potential to Kuwait in agriculture and food sectors

At Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah's invitation, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Kuwait from February 17 to 18. In line with this, the Centre for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) reviewed key aspects of Uzbekistan-Kuwait trade over the past eight years, focusing on trade patterns, key exports and imports, and potential future collaboration. While trade between Uzbekistan and Kuwait has grown positively, there is still untapped potential for further economic cooperation, Fresh Plaza reports.

In Niamey markets, locals are bargaining over the prices of basic goods like rice, a crucial staple now unaffordable for many Nigerien families due to the country's historic inflation. "If you can afford lunch, you save a portion for dinner," Hadjia Hadjara, a resident of Niamey, told the AFP. "There's no longer the option of preparing two hearty meals a day."

Mahaman Nouri, President of the Consumer Rights Association (CSPA), explains, "It’s adaptation - that’s resilience, adapting to the situation. I know many who didn’t use to eat corn paste, but now they’ve adapted and understood they need to turn to local products. Even many well-placed officials have shifted to local goods."

Idrissou Issoufou, a Ghana ian truck driver, describes the hardships of transporting goods through the region, saying, "We transport cargo from Ghana, then stay in Kaya (Burkina Faso) to wait for military escorts to Dori (Burkina Faso), where new escorts take over until Téra (Niger). The challenges begin there, continuing all the way to Niamey."

Beninese merchant Salamatou Gna shares the difficulties of transporting goods, stating, "We face significant challenges shipping products from Benin to Gaya (Niger) by boat. We spend a lot of money. The border closure creates real obstacles, and it’s largely responsible for the high prices of goods."

Vendor Illa Jikan Taguimba notes, "We are blamed for the price hikes, but it’s not our fault. Sometimes, we can’t even find basic products in Niger. Even simple things like tomatoes often come from Morocco, Nigeria , Ghana, or Togo."

Hadjia Hadjara concludes, "If you can afford lunch, you save a portion for dinner, but it’s no longer a question of preparing two hearty meals a day."

Inflation Stabilises at 5.20%

Colombia's inflation rate closed in 2024 at 5.20%, marking a significant drop from 2023’s 9.28%. According to Colombia’s National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), inflation has been on a steady decline since peaking at 13.34% in November 2022, Colombia One reports. However, the disinflation process has slowed due to the rising costs of electricity, food, and goods. The lowest inflation rate since November 2021 still far exceeds the 1.16% recorded in December 2020. Sectors like education, restaurants, and utilities continue to see the highest inflation, while entertainment and communication costs have declined.

Colombia rejects Maduro’s election results

Colombia's government has reiterated its stance against recognising the results of Venezuela’s contested July 2024 elections. This came ahead of President Nicolás Maduro's third-term inauguration. Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo emphasised that the elections lacked transparency and failed to meet democratic standards. “Colombia has adopted a consistent and prudent stance. The past electoral process did not provide guarantees to the participants, nor was it carried out in a transparent manner in accordance with the provisions of the laws and the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," El Colombiano quoted Murillo. Despite sending an ambassador to Venezuela, President Gustavo Petro declined to attend the swearing-in ceremony, aligning with international criticism of the electoral process.

Plane crash in Antioquia

All 10 passengers aboard a Cessna 402 aircraft that crashed in Urrao, Antioquia, have been confirmed dead. The plane, en route from Juradó (Chocó) to Medellín, lost communication on January 9, El Heraldo reports. Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián expressed deep sorrow and pledged continued efforts to recover the victims. Relief agencies and the Colombian Air Force are working on-site to transfer the bodies.

5.3 Earthquake Hits Pacific Coast

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia's Pacific coast near Chocó on January 10. The tremor, recorded at a depth of under 30 km, was felt in cities such as Medellín, Quibdó, and Bahía Solano. Two smaller aftershocks followed. The Colombian Geological Service reported that no injuries or structural damage have been recorded so far, El Heraldo reports.

Hybrid and electric vehicle market boom

Colombia's hybrid and electric vehicle market saw record-breaking growth in 2024. Hybrid sales increased by 53.4%, with over 42,000 units sold, while electric vehicle sales surged by 293%, totalling 9,178 units. December 2024 marked the best sales month in history, driven by the introduction of new green models and growing consumer interest. In a report by EL Tiempo , hybrid and electric vehicles now account for 25% of all vehicle deliveries in the country.

In the bustling streets of Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, the air quality has reached alarming levels, with pollution becoming a daily struggle for residents. The city, often shrouded in a thick layer of smog, is now pushing for a significant shift towards electric motorbikes to combat this environmental crisis. Hanoi's pollution problem is largely attributed to the millions of petrol-powered motorbikes that dominate its streets. These vehicles are responsible for over two-thirds of the city's toxic smog.

The protests , which began on October 14, have led to fuel shortages and soaring prices, paralysing daily life and commerce.

The roadblocks were initiated by Morales' loyalists in response to his potential arrest over allegations of abusing a minor. The blockades have expanded from four initial sites to 18, primarily around Cochabamba, Morales' political stronghold.

Protesters have targeted key routes, including those connecting Cochabamba to Sucre and Santa Cruz, effectively cutting off major transportation arteries.

"If you don't work, you don't eat," said Santos, 25, who had been waiting for almost six hours to fill up told AFP. "It's a total loss, especially for us who are on public transport."

Evo Morales, Bolivia's first Indigenous leader who served from 2006 to 2019, is currently under investigation for rape, human trafficking, and smuggling, stemming from an alleged relationship with a 15-year-old girl, with whom he is accused of fathering a daughter in 2016.

Initially, the demonstrations aimed to prevent Morales' potential arrest, but they have since evolved into protests against the economic policies of President Luis Arce's government.

Many commercial drivers have slept at filling stations for days due to a shortage of fuel. This situation has left commuters stranded as they wait for hours after hours to get a bus to and fro.

"My family isn't happy because I've been here for three days now. They're calling me over and over asking 'where are you? where are you?' I tell them I've been at the fueling station. They've been calling for the past two days. I've been at the filling station, I've not been anywhere else. They're not happy. I'm supposed to be at home. Usually when I'm done with my day, I go home. I stay with them and then the next day I resume work. But it's been three days they haven't seen me. They've been calling me. This morning they asked again 'how are things?' I told them that I still haven't bought fuel and I'm still at the filling station," Frederick Abel, a minibus driver told AFP.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the country's most affordable fuel provider, recently announced a significant price hike. The cost of petrol has risen from 617 naira to 897 naira per litre, with some regions seeing prices as high as 1,200 naira This increase has further strained the budgets of many households, leading to widespread discontent.

Fidelia Hamondji, a civil servant shared with AFP that "The situation is so bad. I'm not interested in it (I'm fed up, ed.). Because the money they pay me in a month, my transport, the fare is almost taking half of it. So I'm not meeting up with it at all (I can't make ends meet, ed.) with the transport fare."

"I've been here for two hours, I'm going to work but there are no taxis available because there is no fuel. I'm late for work. And also the taxi fair has been increased to 400 naira (from 200 naira the day before, ed.). That's why I'm still here now," Ernest added after waiting in vain at the bus station on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Dangote refinery, the largest in Africa, has begun producing petrol . According to its owner on Tuesday, September 3, the petrol could be available within the next 48 hours.

Online feud between South Africa and Nigeria trigger Bolt restrictions

The controversy sparked a "bolt for bolt" trend on Twitter, where users from both countries began booking and cancelling rides in each other's nations as a prank. This social media rivalry has created chaos for Bolt drivers, who are now grappling with wasted trips and lost fuel.

The prank appears to have originated from a South African Twitter user who posted, "When I'm bored, I request [Bolt] in Nigeria, akere their brothers are disrespecting us." This quickly triggered a retaliatory response from Nigerian users, resulting in a surge of fake ride requests across both countries.

One driver in Cape Town recounted his experience: "I drove from Cape Town to Stellenbosch to pick up a customer only to realize it was a fake request. That’s almost 50km worth of fuel gone because of internet jokes."

Similarly, a Lagos-based driver expressed frustration, saying, "This is inconsiderate to our plight. At a time when fuel is scarce and expensive, no reasonable person should be doing this."

An X user with the handle @i_am_feezah wrote, “South Africans are cruel with the Bolt thing they started, but you know what is also cruel? The Nigerians retaliating, because you know who is suffering at the end of the day? Innocent people trying to feed their families.”

Bolt takes action

To protect its drivers and genuine customers, Bolt has implemented restrictions on "inter-country" ride requests between Nigeria and South Africa.

Yahaya Mohammed, Country Manager for Bolt Nigeria, confirmed the action in a statement to Techpoint Africa, saying, "Bolt is aware of the fake ride request incident between some individuals in Nigeria and South Africa. We have taken measures to resolve the issue, particularly for our driver-partners in both countries. The integrity and safety of our platform is our utmost priority."

These restrictions aim to prevent further disruptions and ensure that drivers can continue to operate without being affected by the online feud.

The ride-hailing company increased the minimum fare to KES 220 ($1.71) and introduced a priority service option that charges an additional KES 110 ($0.85) for faster service.

In a statement, Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa, explained the decision, “Uber has made these pricing updates to ensure that drivers continue to have the opportunity to maximise their earnings while driving on the Uber app and at the same time, remaining at an affordable price point for riders.”

However, the fare adjustment has not fully satisfied the demands of the drivers. Driver representatives have indicated that the changes fall short of their expectations, suggesting that further negotiations or actions may follow, Tech Cabal reports.

Zakaria Mwangi, Secretary General of the Ridehail Transport Association (RTA), expressed disappointment, stating, “We don’t really feel it. We made our demands clear that we want at least KES 300 as the base fare among other demands. They’ve not gotten to 10% of our demands. We will be back at it again.”

Uber's move comes as the company seeks to balance the needs of its drivers with maintaining competitive prices for customers.

On July 16, drivers staged a strike demanding that ride-hailing apps raise the minimum fare to KES 300 ($2.33). They also called for a review of the companies' policies on account suspensions and deactivations in disciplinary cases.

A new electrified commuter railway between key hubs was launched in Tanzania on Thursday, July 25.

Built by a Turkish company, the 440-kilometer (273-mile) line is part of a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network designed to connect the northern and western regions of the country to Dar es Salaam, the Indian Ocean port city.

The train features air-conditioned carriages from South Korea equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and has quickly gained popularity among travellers, who are accustomed to the unreliable, diesel-powered buses that have long dominated Tanzania's public transport system.

"I am so happy with this service since it will bring big contributions, especially by creating employment for many teenagers. It will increase the number of tourists who will be visiting our country. But above all it has really helped make transport smoother," a passenger said.

The Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) announced that daily trips between Dodoma and Dar es Salaam will be operational, reducing the usual lengthy bus journey to approximately three and a half hours.

Analysts anticipate that the new rail system will offer a safer and more reliable transportation option for Tanzania's growing population. The railway is expected to help reduce carbon emissions, as well as noise and air pollution.

The electric SGR train which commenced operation on Friday, June 14 is capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour, significantly reducing travel times and facilitating the efficient movement of goods and people throughout Tanzania.

Tanzania's Railways Corporation Director General Masanja Kadogosa described the move as "A milestone advancement in Tanzania's transport infrastructure that promises to enhance connectivity and efficiency and stimulate economic growth."

The Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile said that about 1400 passengers travelled on the newest SGR train from the capital Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, in eastern Tanzania on June 14 for free.

"The maiden electric SGR commercial operations between the two destinations was historic," said Kihenzile.

The commercial operations of the electric SGR train follow a successful trial run between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro in February 2024 which covered a distance of 300 kilometres and marked a significant step forward in Tanzania's efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure.

According to the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), the electric SGR train will operate between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, with fares ranging from TSh 6,500 ($2.49) to TSh 31,000 ($11.86). The train will also have three classes - economy, business, and royal - and will offer passengers a range of amenities, including food and beverage services, Wi-Fi, and charging points.

The introduction of the electric SGR train is expected to stimulate economic growth, enhance trade connectivity, and improve the overall transportation experience for Tanzanians and their neighbouring counterparts. The train is also expected to reduce congestion on the roads and decrease freight costs by 40%.

Tanzania's SGR project is being built in partnership with Turkish and Chinese construction firms for Sh26 trillion (approximately $10 billion). The project is expected to be completed in phases , with the first phase covering a distance of 300 kilometres from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. The second phase will cover a distance of 422 kilometres from Morogoro to Makutupora, while the third phase will cover a distance of 294 kilometres from Makutupora to Tabora.

Labi's passion for eco-friendly solutions has led to the development of bikes powered solely by electricity, equipped with two rechargeable batteries that boast an impressive range of up to 140 kilometres on a single charge.

Collaborating with major delivery companies such as Glovo and Bolt, these bikes are petrol-free fleets, redefining service delivery in the West African nation with speed and convenience.

Labi's company and workshop, Wahu Mobility in Accra, Ghana is where skilled workers design and construct each electric bike.

Labi holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Southampton University and a Master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership from Cambridge University, both in the United Kingdom.

When asked about the inspiration behind her venture, she said, “From my travels and engagements in the various regions of Ghana, I found out that aside from sanitation, transportation was also a challenge. So, I started looking at creating a business in mobility where electric bikes could be used for delivery. As fate would have it, I started buying secondhand bicycles that were going to Bolgatanga so my co-founder, Ghanaian Aerospace Engineer Quincy Agyapong, could convert them into electric bikes," she was quoted by local media The Mirror .

Over three years in business , Wahu Mobility has placed over 100 electric bikes in circulation, adopting a 'work and pay' model for delivery riders. Riders pay GH¢300 weekly for two years before becoming full owners of the bikes.

Labi emphasizes the benefits of electric bikes, citing their environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. The bikes take about three hours to charge fully.

“Our bikes are all installed with trackers that are connected to our back-end system, so theft is unlikely, she was quoted by local media The Mirror . “It took us two years to effectively design a bike that we thought was fit for the African road.”

Looking ahead, Labi envisions an expansion of her initiative, intending to reach 250,000 delivery riders by 2030.

The prototype bus, developed by local Zimbabwean manufacturing firm AVM Africa (PVT) Ltd can transport 20 seated passengers and 100 standing passengers, according to local media the Herald .

Managing director of AVM Jacob Zvainairo Kupa at the exhibition of the 120-passenger bus on January 4 told reporters that one bus can be constructed in 22 days.

“In terms of production, it will take us 22 days to produce one bus, and we are looking forward to producing more this year alone,” he said.

The Zimbabwean Minister of Industry and Commerce Sithembiso Nyoni present at the exhibition also said that the goal of the Zimbabwean government is to reduce the importation of goods while increasing local production.

“The Government would love to see every sector of the economy grow including transport, so that we don’t need to import buses,” Nyoni said.

“It is amazing that Zimbabwe is still importing things that it can make and as a ministry, we are saying step by step we must stop importing things we can make ourselves and buses are part of that and today we are seeing a prototype of what we can do,” she added.

In 2022 Zimbabwe reportedly spent $100 million a month on fuel imports as a result of the lack of a public transport system since the COVID-19 outbreak, local media News Day reported.

Major cities in the Southern African nation became congested as a result of the lack of a traditional public transportation system, which encouraged the rise of the unofficial public transportation sector and increased usage of private vehicles, the New Zimbabwe reported.

Man who threatened Ecuador’s attorney general arrested

El Universo reports the apprehension of Fabricio Colón Pico Suárez who was accused by Attorney General Diana Salazar of orchestrating an attack against her. The arrest is part of the government's policy to safeguard authorities who risk their lives to improve the operational conditions of the Ecuadorian state, as outlined by President Daniel Noboa. Interior Minister Mónica Palencia conveyed this information during the announcement. Pico was mentioned by the prosecutor in the hearing involving eight additional individuals in the Metastasis case, which is focused on investigating organized crime. The National Police has associated Pico with the criminal group Los Lobos. According to the attorney general, the same group responsible for the assassination of former legislator and presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio has been hired to carry out an attack against her.

Two new El Salvador-like prisons

As part of the security promises of the government led by Daniel Noboa, the construction of two new prisons has been announced, as Primicias reports. He mentioned that the prisons, part of the Phoenix plan, will be ready in 10 months. Noboa highlighted that he intends to place rehabilitation centres in areas with minimal influence from organized crime. The President also noted that the new prisons will resemble those in Mexico and El Salvador, as they will be constructed by the same company used by these countries' governments. Acknowledging the popularity of his Salvadoran counterpart, Noboa frequently brought up Bukele. Despite facing accusations of human rights abuses, the latter maintains high popularity levels, attributed to a significant reduction in homicides during his four-year tenure in El Salvador.

50 new buses for Quito to modernize transportation systems

The Municipality of Quito plans to implement a modernisation plan for the Trolebús and Ecovía transportation systems in 2024. The aim is to enhance the services to prevent a significant decline in users who view the Metro as a new transportation option. Xavier Vásquez, the Manager of Empresa de Pasajeros, the firm that runs these systems, spoke to Primicias and acknowledged the urgent need for modernization, citing deficiencies in various areas, especially customer service. As part of this modernization, the municipality will invest USD 33 million to purchase 50 new trolleybuses, with the first units expected to arrive in the last quarter of 2024 to replace those that have reached the end of their operational life.

Woman fights to legalize euthanasia

According to CNN , Paola Roldán, a 42-year-old married mother of a 5-year-old, is awaiting a landmark decision from the Constitutional Court that could impact Ecuador regarding the possibility of accessing euthanasia, which is currently illegal in the country. She was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in August 2020, Roldán, who now has a 95% disability, has embarked on a legal battle for the right to a dignified death. Dependent on a respirator, home nursing care, palliative care, and a hospital bed, Roldán's case has sparked a broad debate in deeply religious Ecuador between those advocating for life despite the pain of an incurable disease and those supporting the right of patients with a terminal diagnosis to decide on the continuation or cessation of their lives.

Noboa to hold referendum; opposition criticizes i t

Following President Daniel Noboa's introduction of 11 questions for a referendum in Ecuador, criticism arose from various sectors, CNN states. The proposed referendum is part of Noboa's campaign promises, focusing on legal reforms to combat organized crime, redefine the role of the Armed Forces, boost employment, and revive the banned casino and gambling industry. The opposition and some of Noboa’s allies in the National Assembly swiftly rejected the initiative. The correísta movement, Revolución Ciudadana, argued that the consultation "does not solve anything" and should go through the Assembly for potential reforms. The Social Christian Party noted that several of Noboa's proposed reforms are already in progress in the Assembly. They suggest including questions on topics not considered by the president, such as regulating hourly work and abolishing institutions like the Council of Citizen Participation and the Council of the Judiciary. On the other hand, the opposition movement Construye describes the popular consultation initiative as "useless and erratic." Noboa expressed willingness to dialogue but criticized the critics' approach, attributing it to ego-related issues. Moreover, he has asked a member of his cabinet to add five more questions.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines is exploring alternative development partners after the Philippine government withdrew its loan applications to China for certain projects.

During a hearing of the Congressional Oversight on Official Development Assistance, Transportation Undersecretary Timothy John Batan revealed that the applications were considered withdrawn in July 2022 when the new administration took over, with the loans still pending approval.

The government reapplied for loans in December 2022 for the Philippine National Railways (PNR) South Long Haul and in January 2023 for the Subic-Clark Railway project.

With no response from China by the end of October, the loan application for the Subic-Clark railway was considered withdrawn.

The Philippine government is giving China until the end of December to act on the loan application for the South Long Haul project. In the absence of Chinese action, the Philippines is exploring other development partners for these projects.

According to lawmaker Joey Salceda, maritime issues with China are a factor in the withdrawal. Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo urged the transportation department to actively seek alternative funding sources for the projects.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported progress on the China-funded Chico River Pump Irrigation Project and the ongoing construction of the Samal-Davao connector and the New Centennial Water Source-Kaliwa Dam projects.

This comes after the Philippines discontinued China as a funding source for these projects last year.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista stated that the Philippine government might seek official development assistance (ODA) from these countries or explore other funding options, including government contributions or private sector investments, according to a report from Reuters.

The three railway projects in question are the Subic-Clark Railway Project, the Philippine National Railways South Long-Haul Project, and the Davao-Digos segment of the Mindanao Railway Project, with a combined value of $4.95 billion. Efforts to secure loans from China for these projects, initiated in 2018 during former President Rodrigo Duterte's term, had shown no progress.

Given the lack of headway in loan negotiations with China, the government sought alternative financing solutions. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had ordered officials to reevaluate the loan agreements with China, leading to the search for other funding sources.

Marcos, who took office in June last year, aims to modernize the country's railway system, which lags far behind other Asian urban centers in terms of railway infrastructure. Currently, the Philippines has only 77km of operational railway, compared to more than 1,100km before World War II.

Notably, construction of the Philippines' first subway train is already underway in the capital region, funded by loans from Japan.
