Originally implemented on July 1, the rule aimed to restrict petrol cars older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10, in an effort to combat the severe winter smog that plagues the capital every year.

However, the proposal met significant criticism from the public, who argued it would greatly disrupt daily life without offering viable transport alternatives.

Critics contended that such a ban would cause chaos on the roads while failing to improve the air quality to a satisfactory level. As a result, the government has now put the initiative on hold, citing the need for better traffic management strategies.

Analysts suggest that addressing inefficiencies within the public transport system could serve as a more effective method to mitigate pollution issues in the long run.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced the government's intent to create a new system for dealing with older vehicles. This system is expected to tackle pollution concerns but aims to avoid further burdening the public. As it stands, many are anxious to see what measures will follow next in the ongoing battle for cleaner air in India's capital.
