Why airlines will soon stop some passengers from flying to Singapore

From January 2026, major carriers including Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and AirAsia will begin implementing a new “no-boarding directive”, under which passengers flagged as ineligible for entry will be barred from boarding flights to Singapore. More airlines are expected to join the scheme from March.

The move follows figures from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) showing that about 41,800 foreigners were turned away at Singapore’s checkpoints in the first 11 months of 2025. That is nearly 26% more than the total for all of 2024, and 46% higher than in 2023.

Under the new system, airlines will work with Singapore authorities to identify high-risk or prohibited travellers before they depart. These include people with criminal records, those using forged documents or multiple identities, and individuals banned from entering Singapore.

ICA said it has already strengthened checks at its borders using automated lanes with forgery detection, biometric screening and data analytics. These tools allow officers to spot impersonation attempts and other security risks more quickly.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Joe Tan said advance passenger information and analytics are also used to flag travellers for closer scrutiny even before they arrive.

“We do not deny travellers entry simply because they are identified as high-risk upstream,” he said. “They are stopped for further checks, interviews and investigations to determine their eligibility."

The new directive pushes these checks even further upstream, preventing certain travellers from flying to Singapore at all. Authorities say this will reduce congestion at checkpoints and improve overall security.

Similar systems are already used in countries such as the United States and Australia. In the US, airlines screen passengers against a federal watch list, while Australia uses its Movement Alert List to flag people of interest before travel.

Guatemala Roundup: Crime networks, PNC rebuttal, salary debate

Crime networks shift from “pacts” to territorial dispute

Guatemala is seeing a shift in organised crime dynamics as Mexican cartels, notably Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación and a newer Cartel Chiapas–Guatemala faction expand influence, challenging old tacit “peace” arrangements and escalating violent territorial disputes. Analysts note that Guatemala is no longer just a transit zone for narcotics but a space of active control and conflict, marked by armed clashes, murders and threats to security forces. Recent incidents in Huehuetenango and Sololá highlight this pattern of violence spreading from the Mexico–Guatemala frontier into the interior of the country.

PNC says report blaming army was written under threats

The National Civil Police (PNC) has disputed an earlier police report that accused the Guatemalan Army of attacking civilians and a patrol in Nahualá, Sololá during recent clashes. The PNC claims the original report was drafted under coercion, threats and extreme violence by armed groups, and insists that a revised, verifiable account was later submitted to prosecutors. Authorities maintain that the verified version confirms engagements with illegal armed actors and justifies the state of prevention in the area. The violence forms part of a broader security crisis in western Guatemala, where long-running territorial disputes between Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán have escalated into armed attacks on police and military positions. The unrest prompted the government to deploy security forces and impose temporary restrictions on movement and public gatherings.

Debate intensifies over Guatemala’s 2026 minimum wage increase

Guatemalan officials have approved an increase in the minimum wage for 2026, with differentiated hikes across sectors, 7.5% for non-agricultural work, 5.5% in agriculture and 4% in export and maquila sectors, effective 1 January. While the government says the adjustments align with technical criteria and economic needs, some analysts argue the rise exceeds what economic indicators justify and could challenge business formalisation. Business groups have called for more technical discussion on wage policy amid divided reactions across sectors.

Guatemala expels alleged Mara 18 gang member to El Salvador

Guatemalan authorities located and expelled Adilson Alfonso “Fatboy” Gómez, a 39-year-old alleged member of the Mara 18 gang wanted in El Salvador with multiple arrest orders. The operation, involving investigators from the DIPANDA unit, reflects continued efforts to remove transnational gang figures hiding in Guatemala. Gómez was delivered to Salvadoran authorities after being found in Guatemala City’s Zone 7, and his expulsion underscores ongoing regional cooperation against organised gang activity.

US issues travel warning over violence in Sololá region

The United States Embassy in Guatemala has issued a travel advisory urging US citizens to avoid the municipalities of Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán in Sololá due to deteriorating security following violent clashes. The alert follows the Guatemalan government ’s 15-day state of prevention declaration in response to recent armed confrontations that killed and wounded civilians and security forces. The embassy’s warning emphasises heightened risks for travellers in and around the conflict area.

‘An act of survival’: Kenyans react to video of man clinging to Nairobi bus

The footage, shared on social media and filmed by a motorist following the distinctive orange bus, shows the man gripping a metal rail at the rear while the vehicle is in motion. His steady hold and composed posture struck many viewers.

Much of the online discussion focused less on how the man evaded traffic police and more on why he felt compelled to take such a risk.

“It’s an act of survival,” wrote Kobia Muki, a sentiment echoed repeatedly across social media platforms.

Others criticised what they saw as a lack of collective care.

“No one gave him a ride when the bus stopped or paid his fare, that’s the problem with us,” said Carol CM, shifting the focus from the individual to society at large.

Several commenters connected the incident to wider economic pressure. “Survival tactics in a harsh economy ,” Bobby Issa wrote, while Francis Odiango added: “Honestly Kenyans are undergoing hell…not because of one person but the system, bad policies and hired parliament.”

Economic woes

The reactions came against a backdrop of deepening economic strain.

Kenya’s economic growth slowed to 4.0% in the third quarter of 2024, down from 6.0% a year earlier, after underperformance across most sectors, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

Construction activity contracted by 2.0%, while mining and quarrying shrank by 11.1%, adding pressure to already fragile job prospects.

Although growth in agriculture, transport, financial services, real estate, trade and hospitality helped cushion the slowdown, many households continue to feel the strain. Nationwide protests against proposed tax increases at the end of the second quarter disrupted major towns and turned violent in some areas, underscoring widespread public frustration.

For many online, the image of a man hanging onto a bus was not shocking so much as familiar — a stark snapshot of how far some are pushed simply to earn a living .

Why Hong Kong’s CupNoodles Museum is closing after just four years

After four years in operation, the museum will shut on January 11, as its operator prepares for what it calls the next phase of development.

The announcement was made on the museum’s official website, where Nissin thanked customers for their support.

A clearance sale is now under way, with CupNoodles souvenirs and snacks priced from HK$8, drawing last-minute visitors and fans of the brand.

The museum opened in March 2021 at China Hong Kong City in Tsim Sha Tsui, during a period when Hong Kong was still largely closed to tourists. Smaller than its counterparts in Osaka and Yokohama, it nonetheless stood out as a rare themed museum dedicated to instant noodles.

Rather than relying on static displays, the venue focused on interactive workshops. Visitors could design their own Cup Noodles by decorating cups and choosing soup bases and toppings, with more than 5,000 possible flavour combinations.

Another popular activity allowed participants to make Demae Ramen from scratch, starting with kneading dough before shaping and drying the noodles. The hands-on format made the museum especially appealing to families and children .

News of the closure prompted disappointment online, with many netizens describing the museum as a light-hearted and accessible destination in a city often criticised for a lack of child-friendly spaces.

Its closure reflects the broader challenges facing niche attractions in Hong Kong, where high rents, changing tourist habits and pressure on commercial space make it difficult for smaller experiential venues to remain viable.

First-ever self-driving passenger ship sets sail in Japan

The Nippon Foundation, which is leading the initiative, said it will be the first time anywhere in the world that a regular passenger ship carrying ordinary travellers will operate commercially using automatic navigation technology.

Full-scale operations are planned to begin by the end of 2025.

The project was created to address two growing pressures on Japan’s maritime sector: a shortage of ship crews and the persistent risk of accidents caused by human error. As officials see it, autonomous navigation offers a way to maintain services safely despite declining manpower.

The Olympia Dream Seto is operated by Kokusai Ryobi Ferry Co., based in the western city of Okayama. The route links a port in Okayama Prefecture with Shodoshima, an island in neighbouring Kagawa Prefecture. This is the first ship to receive Japanese government certification as an “autonomous ship.”

At the heart of the system is a network of sensors that continuously recognise surrounding conditions at sea. These allow the ferry to automatically adjust its course, avoid obstacles and control both the rudder and propeller with minimal human input.

A function enabling fully automatic operation under specific conditions has been installed as part of the autonomous ship project. Despite this, operators emphasise safety features, with manual control able to take over immediately in the event of danger or unexpected conditions.

Familiarisation voyages will include both regular passengers and system personnel. These early trips are intended to confirm the vessel’s performance before commercial service begins.

The Nippon Foundation launched the autonomous ship programme in 2020, bringing together domestic shipping, shipbuilding, communications, and trading companies. It aims to develop technologies that could eventually be adopted more widely across the industry.

As part of the same initiative, three additional vessels are scheduled to enter commercial service using autonomous navigation technology by the end of March 2026. These ships will expand Japan’s early foray into self-navigating passenger transport.

Mitsuyuki Unno, the foundation’s executive director, said Japan’s rapid progress gives it a strong position as global standards take shape.

“I think Japan is ahead of the rest of the world,” he said. “We hope to contribute to the creation of international rules as a leader.”

Why Airbus recalled 6,000 A320 jets and how it’s disrupting Asian travel

The recall, affecting around 6,000 jets globally, was triggered by a software glitch linked to the flight-control system that manages elevators and ailerons, key components that help an aircraft climb, descend and turn. Regulators in Europe and the United States instructed airlines to carry out an urgent software modification before the aircraft could return to service, Straits Times reports.

The scale of the recall is one of the largest in Airbus’s 55-year history and affects more than half of all A320-family jets currently flying, including the A319, A320 and A321 models. The aircraft are the backbone of short-haul aviation across Asia, particularly in China and India, where rapid economic growth has fuelled a boom in domestic and regional air travel.

India ’s aviation regulator said 338 aircraft in the country were affected. IndiGo, the world’s largest A320 operator, had upgraded 143 of its 200 impacted jets by Friday, while Air India had completed modifications on 42 of its 113 affected planes. Both airlines warned passengers of delays, though they said overall schedules remained largely intact.

Japan also saw some of the worst disruption. ANA Holdings cancelled 65 flights and warned that more could follow, as two-thirds of the country’s A320 fleet required the update. Peach Aviation, its low-cost subsidiary, was also hit. Rival Japan Airlines faced no impact as it does not operate A320s. Nationwide, 95 flights were cancelled.

Across Taiwan , about two-thirds of A320 and A321 aircraft were grounded for checks, while Macao’s regulator instructed Air Macau to adjust flight schedules to limit disruption.

Australian budget carrier Jetstar reported delays at Melbourne airport, while Hong Kong’s HK Express said more than half of its affected aircraft had already been upgraded.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the latest figures confirm the industry is once again a major driver of economic growth. “Tourism is creating jobs, stimulating investment and revitalising local economies,” she said.

October delivered 927,426 arrivals, a 32% jump compared to October 2024, making it one of the strongest months since before the pandemic. September also recorded a 26.9% increase, underscoring steady momentum.

Officials say the gains are the result of improved ease of travel, growing international air connectivity and new tourism products. De Lille also commended that the country’s 1.8 million tourism workers, calling them essential to the sector’s resilience and service quality.

“We are now in a period of sustained growth,” De Lille said. “South Africa is becoming more competitive, and visitors are responding.”

With the festive season approaching, the South African officials say the sector is preparing for what could be a record-breaking close to the year.

Indonesia pioneers ‘seamless corridor’ tech in airports

Developed by Amadeus, the “seamless corridor” system allows passengers to be identified while walking, removing the need to stop, queue, or present a passport.

Cameras capture biometric data as travellers move through a wide passageway, verifying their identity against pre-registered details.

The system is initially aimed at elderly and disabled passengers who need extra assistance, but authorities plan to broaden access as the technology becomes more established.

Eligible travellers can enrol through the All Indonesia mobile app, which consolidates immigration , health, quarantine, and customs procedures.

Three corridors are currently operational: two in Jakarta and one in Surabaya. They complement more than 240 automated e-gates already in service and mark the beginning of a wider national rollout across Indonesia’s airport network.

The technology was stress-tested during this year’s Hajj travel period, when Indonesia processed a large share of the world ’s pilgrims. Each corridor handled more than 30 crossings per minute at peak times — over ten times the throughput of standard e-gates — enabling more than 50,000 pilgrims to enter the country using facial recognition.

Officials say the expansion could ease congestion at immigration during major travel periods, including the Hajj season and domestic holiday peaks.

Industry leaders described the corridors as a significant step towards truly contactless travel.

While uptake of biometric identity checks varies widely between countries, adoption is rising across Asia Pacific and the Middle East . Some advanced models, including the UAE’s, already allow passengers to travel from check-in to boarding using only facial recognition.

Experts noted that the biggest barriers to global rollout are public confidence and regulatory frameworks rather than technical limits. Advocates argued that participation must remain voluntary, with passengers free to opt for manual processing if they prefer.

A prime tourist destination in Asia, Thailand has begun offering a “ digital nomad visa ,” a multiple-entry pass valid for up to five years, which allows foreign workers to stay up to 180 days per entry.

This visa aims to cater to remote workers, freelancers and even tourists traveling to Thailand for training. It can also be used by outsiders visiting for music festivals, seminars or to acquire medical treatment.

Approvals weigh significantly on the applicant being employed by a non-Thai firm.

Thailand defines a digital nomad as “a traveler who earns their living online or from passive sources of income, and does not work for companies in the countries they travel to,” according to the Thai Embassy website.

To be eligible for the digital nomad visa, an applicant must be at least 20 years old with at least $14,197 in savings to last them three months in Thailand. Professional portfolios are required, too.

Visa fee is $284 or 10,000 in the Thai local currency, baht.

The special visa is aimed at bolstering tourism in Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia , having drawn 9.55 million arrivals in the first three months of 2025.

It was the top destination several times before being overtaken by Malaysia in Q1.

The new measures, expected to roll out from 2026, include an increase in the airport departure tax, higher visa processing fees, and a new pre-entry screening charge. Government officials say Japan’s current fees are low by international standards and must be updated.

The move also comes as Japan looks for ways to pay for major domestic commitments such as expanding free high school tuition, a policy that needs long-term funding but is politically sensitive if imposed on voters.

Why is Japan raising fees now?

The government says travel infrastructure is under financial strain. Officials argue that busier airports, tighter border controls and digital systems require new investment. They insist that those who use these services, particularly international travellers, should contribute more to their upkeep, The Asahi Shimbun reports.

What fees are likely to increase?

The current departure tax, introduced in 2019, is expected to rise. Visa and residency application fees are also under review, with the government aiming to bring them in line with countries such as the United States and those in Europe.

A new online entry authorisation system, known as the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (JESTA), is also being planned for visitors from visa-waiver countries. It will require travellers to apply in advance and pay a fee, similar to the U.S. ESTA system.

Will Japanese citizens be affected?

While the departure tax applies to all passengers leaving Japan, officials have suggested cutting passport renewal fees for Japanese citizens to offset the increase. However, foreign nationals would not benefit from such adjustments.

5 reasons why UAE is restricting Ugandan travellers ahead of 2026

Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Oryem Henry Okello, confirmed the restrictions but stressed they do not amount to a total travel ban. Instead, the UAE will suspend the issuance of certain long-term visas, allowing only short-term travel for approved categories of people, Xinhuanet reports.

Here are the key reasons behind the move:

1. Concerns over immigration abuse

UAE officials say the decision is aimed at curbing the number of Ugandans and other nationalities who overstay their visas after entering the country. Overstaying has become a persistent problem, leading to undocumented workers and pressure on immigration systems.

2. Rising criminal activities

Authorities also cited concerns about unlawful activities linked to a small number of Ugandan travellers. While details were not made public, the UAE has increasingly flagged risks around fraud, illegal employment, and organised networks using lax visa policies to their advantage.

3. Targeting high-risk categories

Rather than banning all Ugandans, the restrictions focus on “high-risk” categories of individuals considered most likely to violate visa terms. This means some travellers will still be able to visit, but under tighter scrutiny and mostly on short-term visas.

4. Not a blanket ban

Uganda ’s foreign ministry stressed that the new policy does not amount to a total prohibition. “Some people will still go, but it will be based on the risk of a person overstaying their visa or failing to respect the laws and culture of the UAE,” Oryem clarified.

5. Policy shift in the UAE

The UAE’s 2026 visa ban applies to several African and European countries. Officials say the restrictions are part of a regional immigration strategy to protect the labour market and maintain social order as inbound migration grows.

Authorities, tourism leaders and citizens have urged the government to act swiftly, including seeking support from UNESCO, to safeguard the Inca citadel’s international prestige.

The alarm was raised after reports pointed to a series of problems: irregular ticket sales, rising prices, transport difficulties, and poor coordination between tour operators and state institutions. Experts warn that these issues not only threaten Machu Picchu’s reputation but could undermine the livelihoods of millions of Peruvians who depend on tourism. According to industry data, more than 6.5 million people in the country are tied to the sector.

Local leaders in Cusco, including the regional governor, have criticised the central government’s management and called for greater decentralisation or even an autonomous authority for the site. Former foreign minister Óscar Maúrtua argued that poor services and overlapping responsibilities are damaging the visitor experience and stressed the need for urgent reforms. He and others have suggested that Peru request technical assistance from UNESCO or the World Tourism Organisation.

Machu Picchu remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a status that is not currently under review. However, the potential loss of its ‘Wonder of the World’ designation carries symbolic and economic weight. Business leaders warn that the site has become a “political prize” in domestic disputes, and that ongoing mismanagement risks eroding Peru’s global standing as a leading tourist destination.

The Denver Fire Department confirmed that all 173 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated and the fire was extinguished by 5:10 pm local time (11:10 pm GMT). Five individuals received on-site medical treatment, while one was transported for further care.

American Airlines reported that the aircraft had a maintenance issue involving one of its tires before takeoff and has since been removed from service for inspection.

UK formally supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara

On Sunday, June 1, the United Kingdom officially endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, describing it as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic solution to the long-standing dispute. At a joint press conference in Rabat, British Foreign Minister David Lammy announced the policy shift, stating that the UK now supports Morocco’s proposal to grant the territory limited autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. He was joined by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Both ministers highlighted strong bilateral cooperation on security and trade and acknowledged Morocco’s role as co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Lammy emphasised that resolving the Western Sahara issue is overdue and essential for regional stability in North Africa.

U.S. approves potential $260 million Javelin missile sale to Morocco

Morocco’s request to purchase 612 Javelin anti-tank missiles was published in the U.S. Federal Register on May 27. The proposed $260 million (2.61 billion dirhams) sale received State Department approval, as confirmed by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency on March 19. According to the agency, the sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security by enhancing the defence capabilities of a major non-NATO ally in North Africa. This is the first major U.S. arms deal with Morocco announced since President Donald Trump returned to office on January 20. It was followed by a separate proposal on April 15 to sell 600 FIM-92K Stinger Block I missiles and related equipment for an estimated $825 million (7.7 billion dirhams), also pending Congressional approval.

Morocco’s remittances decline by 3.7% as of April 2025

Remittances from the Moroccan diaspora dropped by 3.7% year-on-year as of April 2025, according to the latest data from the Exchange Office. Transfers totalled MAD 35.9 billion ($3.88 billion), down from MAD 37.27 billion ($4 billion) during the same period in 2024—a decline of MAD 1.37 billion ($148.25 million). Remittances remain a key contributor to Morocco’s economic growth. In 2024, total remittances exceeded $11.7 billion, reflecting a 2.1% increase from 2023.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI outlines four-pillar strategy for Africa’s sustainable development

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has presented a strategic framework for Africa’s comprehensive and sustainable development, focusing on four main pillars: reforming development financing models; fostering supportive institutional, economic, and social environments; boosting intra-African trade; and maximising the value of the continent’s natural resources. The roadmap was conveyed in a message to participants at the 2025 “Ibrahim Governance Weekend” in Marrakech, delivered by Royal Advisor André Azoulay. The King emphasised that development financing remains a critical challenge, calling for innovative and solidarity-based solutions that reflect Africa’s specific needs and require coordinated action at national, regional, and global levels.

Morocco ranks among top global travel destinations in early 2025

Morocco was identified alongside Spain and Japan as one of the best-performing travel destinations in the first quarter of 2025, according to the latest UN World Tourism Barometer. International tourist arrivals to Morocco increased by over 22% compared to Q1 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 16%. Globally, more than 300 million international tourists travelled between January and March 2025—an increase of 14 million from the same period in 2024. This represents a 5% rise in global arrivals year-over-year and a 3% increase over pre-pandemic figures. Morocco contributed significantly to Africa’s 9% growth in tourist arrivals. The country’s performance has been attributed to strategic investments in infrastructure, improved security, and the promotion of desert tourism.

The move is expected to enhance Uganda’s connectivity with key European business and tourism markets.

Speaking at the launch event held at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki emphasised the strategic importance of the new route, the New Vision reports.

"Uganda's exports to the United Kingdom in the last year were worth $22.6 million. We are confident that our cargo capacity, along with our plans to expand and enhance cargo operations with a freighter later this year, will support the rapid growth of Ugandan exports to the UK," Bamuturaki stated.

She further highlighted that the route would boost Uganda Airlines' international profile and position it more competitively in global aviation markets.

The new route will be serviced by Uganda Airlines’ Airbus A330-800 Neo, which features economy, premium economy, and business class seating. Initial operations will include four flights per week to London Gatwick Airport, marking Uganda Airlines’ third intercontinental destination, following Dubai and Mumbai.

Uganda has lacked direct flight access to the UK since British Airways suspended services nearly a decade ago.

Suzuki’s months-long odyssey, which began last summer, has captured the hearts of thousands on social media , where he shared regular updates of his trek.

“It’s been a very good experience,” Suzuki told AFP after crossing the finish line. He recounted several intense moments along the way, including an encounter with a lion and two incidents where his rickshaw was struck by trucks. Despite these setbacks, Suzuki persevered. “I couldn’t make it so without you guys,” a tearful Suzuki told his supporters gathered to cheer him on. “That’s why I’m really happy to see you guys and run together until the finish line.”

Suzuki’s journey took him through diverse terrains and cultures, from the bustling streets of Nairobi to the arid landscapes of Namibia. Along the way, he braved harsh conditions , including a scarcity of food and water. “When I was crossing Namibia, there was nothing everywhere. It was very difficult to get water or food. I slept outside every time,” Suzuki recalled.

His determination and resilience inspired many, including Alvyn Andrews, a supporter who followed Suzuki from Namibia to South Africa. “I caught up with him and offered him water just as he got out of Namibia,” Andrews said. “It’s just amazing to see how the people in South Africa have come out to support him.”

The tourism boom has bolstered Spain's economy, with the sector contributing approximately 13 percent to the country's GDP, the AFP reports.

"In 2024, the forecast for international tourists is around 94 million, marking a 10 percent increase compared to 2023, which was already a record year," Hereu stated during a press conference in Madrid.

The surge in visitors also brought significant economic gains, with foreign tourists spending an estimated €126 billion ($130 billion) in 2024—a 16 percent rise from the previous year. Spain's growth rates have remained robust, outpacing much of the sluggish eurozone economy, driven in part by strong tourism performance.

However, the tourism boom has sparked tensions in popular destinations. Locals in hotspots such as Barcelona and Malaga have voiced concerns about rising rents and the transformation of their neighbourhoods due to an influx of visitors.

In response, both cities have introduced measures to regulate short-term tourist rentals, aiming to mitigate public discontent and curb skyrocketing housing prices.

Media at risk

Nepal’s media sector, significantly impacted by the pandemic, faces a critical juncture with ongoing job losses and salary cuts for journalists. Increased government pressure and censorship during the pandemic are escalating, exemplified by new bills aimed at consolidating media control and vague guidelines restricting communication on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. Labour rights issues are also prominent, with many journalists filing complaints for unpaid wages, particularly against Kantipur Media Group, leading to legal actions against the company. The environment mirrors global trends of economic instability and political pressures on media, raising concerns about the future of independent journalism in Nepal, My Republica reports.

Nepalis injured in Mexico

Three Nepali nationals were injured in an incident involving Mexican security forces on October 2 near the Mexico-Guatemala border. All 11 Nepali nationals in the vehicle are currently in detention by Mexican immigration authorities. The Nepali Embassy in Washington DC confirmed that no Nepali died in the shooting, which reportedly involved multiple nationalities. The embassy is in contact with Mexican authorities for further updates, according to The Kathmandu Post .

Floods

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Nepal after heavy flooding and landslides last week resulted in over 236 deaths and significant property damage. In a letter to Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Modi offered India’s assistance for relief and reconstruction efforts. As a result of the disaster, 173 people were injured, and 19 remain missing, with 17,120 having been rescued. Nepal's government is providing emergency relief and free medical treatment. Search and rescue operations are nearing completion, and efforts to assist victims’ families are ongoing across affected districts, ANI reports.

Tourism boom

In September 2024, Nepal recorded a record-breaking 96,305 foreign tourist arrivals, surpassing the previous high of 91,012 in September 2023, according to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). This marks a nearly 6% increase from last year. While arrivals from India decreased by 20% to 22,984 visitors, European and American tourist numbers rose significantly, with 17,104 Europeans (up 12%) and 11,549 Americans (up 36%) visiting in September. The overall total for January through September 2024 reached over 816,000 tourists, contributing positively to the Nepali economy. As reported by My Republica , the NTB aims to attract 1.6 million foreign tourists in the current fiscal year.

Petroleum grant from India

India has pledged a grant of Rs 15 billion for the construction of a petroleum pipeline and fuel storage facility in Nepal. An agreement between Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was signed in New Delhi for projects including a new pipeline from Siliguri to Jhapa and an extension from Amlekhgunj to Chitwan. IOC will build a storage tank in Jhapa, while NOC will invest approximately Rs 9.5 billion for a storage facility in Chitwan. These projects aim to improve fuel supply efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and minimise environmental impact. The Siliguri-Jhapa pipeline will primarily serve the eastern region of Nepal, addressing the inadequacies of the current Motihari-Amlekhgunj pipeline, reports My Republica .

Thailand Roundup: Calls for peace, untapped music industry, travel scam

Calls for peace

NGOs in Southern Thailand are urging the new government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to prioritise regional peace. Civil Society Council chairman Lamai Manakarn expressed concern over the ongoing security issues and the stalled peace negotiation process, which has been ineffective since its initiation. As reported by the Sun The council, representing over 40 NGOs, plans to submit an open letter requesting the government's focus on resolving the conflict that has resulted in over 7,000 deaths since 2004. Paetongtarn, the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history, is expected to outline her policies soon, including addressing these pressing issues.

Corruption threats

The Democrat Party of Thailand, represented by Secretary-General Dech-it Khaothong, has pledged to withdraw from the coalition government if corruption occurs within the administration. Speaking on his first day as deputy public health minister, Dech-it reinforced the party's anti-corruption stance and stated that if the government remains graft-free, they will serve their full term. Despite claims of strong local support for joining the coalition, a recent survey revealed that 54% of respondents oppose the party's participation, with only 12% strongly supporting it. Dech-it indicated the party would evaluate its coalition performance monthly, Bangkok Post reports .

Thai-Chinese high-speed train project

Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote is seeking Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's approval to sign a construction contract for a 13.3-kilometre segment of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train project, which has faced delays. The contract has been awarded but is held up due to concerns about the proximity of Ayutthaya Station to the UNESCO World Heritage site. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) completed a Heritage Impact Assessment and submitted it to UNESCO, agreeing to lower the elevated track's height from 19 to 17 metres, Bangkok Post reported. However, relocating the route is not feasible due to budget and time constraints. The SRT aims to finalise the contract by October and proceed with the project irrespective of UNESCO's final recommendation.

Untapped music industry

Experts from Thailand's Creative Economy Agency emphasise the country's potential in the global music industry, bolstered by the government's soft power promotion policy. The IFPI's Global Music Report 2024 noted that the global music market generated $28.6 billion in 2023, with a significant contribution from streaming (67.3% of total revenue). Countries like South Korea, China, and India are driving this growth, particularly through the popularity of K-pop. According to The Star , Thai music revenue reached $126 million in 2023, up 18.6% thanks to government initiatives like the Music Exchange project promoting Thai artists internationally. Innovations in technology, such as virtual reality and AI, continue to transform the music experience and engage global audiences.

Travel scam

A fraudulent tour company in Thailand has scammed over 150 victims, accumulating around 20 million baht. The scammers, identified by authorities as two individuals, operated by falsely advertising overseas employment and travel packages, mainly via social media. Victims recounted paying significant amounts for tours, only to lose contact with the company as departure dates approached. Investigations are ongoing, with victims gathering evidence to assist authorities. Concerns arise that the suspects may have fled the country, complicating recovery efforts for the defrauded funds, as reported by Asean Now .

This was announced by the Head of the Central Administration for Tourism Companies, Samia Sami. The decision follows directives from Minister Sherif Fathy, who ordered expedited investigations into the involved companies.

This crackdown comes in the wake of a tragic incident during this year’s pilgrimage in June, where around 650 Egyptians were among hundreds of pilgrims who died due to a severe heatwave. Many of the Egyptian victims had travelled to Saudi Arabia without proper Hajj permits. In response, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi formed a task force led by Prime Minister Madbouly to investigate the deaths and the travel companies responsible for facilitating illegal Hajj trips, Ahram reports.

The ministry’s statement confirmed that the 36 companies had been found guilty of organising illegal Hajj and Umrah trips, allowing citizens to travel on non-Hajj visas, directly violating Saudi regulations.

In line with Article 21 of the Egyptian Hajj Regulation Law, companies found guilty of violating these provisions face financial penalties ranging from EGP 1 to 3 million (approximately $32,000 to $97,000).

The ministry emphasised its commitment to enforcing legal measures against companies that fail to comply with regulations, urging citizens to book their Hajj trips only through licensed agencies.

Pakistan

Yemen

Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have joined forces to create a seamless travel experience that attracts more visitors and enhances the region’s appeal as a top travel destination.

These countries, all Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area members, will now participate in the expanded "univisa." According to Reuters , the univisa currently covers Zambia and Zimbabwe, allowing short visits to Botswana via Kazungula, a small border town in Zambia.

During a recent summit in Livingstone, Zambia, KAZA leaders agreed to extend the univisa’s coverage to additional countries within both the conservation area and the larger Southern African economic community.

"We must simply say that this will happen," Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema declared in his address. "I am grateful that my colleagues have reached a consensus on the univisa," he added.

Botswana’s Vice President, Slumber Tsogwane, confirmed his country’s commitment to fully adopt the univisa, enhancing its role by mirroring the European Union's Schengen Visa for Southern Africa.

Currently, only five African nations ; Seychelles, The Gambia, Benin, Kenya, and Rwanda allow visa-free travel for African citizens. Kenya's President William Ruto emphasised the importance of easing visa restrictions within Africa at a summit in Congo Brazzaville in 2023.

“Visa restrictions amongst ourselves are working against us. When people cannot travel, business people cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel, we all become net losers,” he stated .

The Africa Wealth Report 2024 indicated that while some countries in Latin America and Asia are exempt from the requirement, African nations often encounter significant hurdles.

Lengthy and cumbersome application processes, coupled with high nonrefundable fees, make rejections particularly costly for applicants.

Here's a breakdown of the top 10 countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates in 2022:

Algeria:

Algeria has the highest number of applications on the list. There were 392,053 applications and 179,409 rejections, Algerians face a rejection rate ten times higher than that of applicants from Canada, the report suggests. Algeria's rate is pegged at 45.8%.

Guinea-Bissau:

Despite only 7,990 applications, Guinea-Bissau had 3,611 rejections, signifying a 45.2% rejection rate.

Nigeria:

Nigeria, with 86,815 applications and 39,189 rejections, has an almost three-times higher rejection rate compared to applicants from Turkey. The rate stands at 45.1%.

Sri Lanka:

Out of 17,594 applications, 7,691 were rejected, with a rate of 43.7%.

Ghana (43.6%):

Ghana, with 42,124 applications and 18,363 rejections, experiences a rejection rate of 43.6%, which is four times higher than that of Russians.

Haiti :

Despite only 6,270 applications, Haiti sees a rejection rate of 42.4%, specifically 2,655.

Senegal:

With 56,866 applications and 23,683 rejections, the Senegalese rejection rate is 41.6%.

Guinea:

Guinea, with 11,806 applications and 4,791 rejections, faces a high rejection rate of 40.6%

Pakistan :

Out of 76,080 applications, 30,841 were rejected, representing 40.5%

Mali :

With 23,117 applications and 9,219 rejections, Mali rounds out the top 10 with a rejection rate of 39.8%.

By contrast, the report further noted that only one in twenty-five applicants residing in the US, Canada, or the UK were rejected, and one in ten were from Russia.

The Seychelles and Mauritius, along with 61 countries in Latin America and Asia, are exempt from the Schengen visa requirement. Additionally, some African nations like South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia, experience a relatively low rejection rate of less than 7%.

Individuals are then asked to evaluate their current lives on this scale.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) fee launched in January will no longer apply to citizens of Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Eritrea, Mozambique, San Marino, and South Africa. The exemption for these countries, effective February 15, is attributed to the visa abolition agreements or bilateral visa waiver agreements they have established with Kenya.

The Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, Bacha Debele, expressed gratitude for Kenya's swift decision to eliminate the payment requirement for Ethiopian citizens seeking eTA.

“My heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Government of Kenya for its prompt response and kind decision to remove Ethiopian citizens from the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) related electronic payment requirement. We kindly inform our citizens that they can enter Kenya without any requirement for a visa and its related payment, but the requirement to fill eTA form online before arrival remains mandatory,” he is quoted by the Nation .

While the eTA system was introduced to streamline travel and visa applications, critics argued that the $30 fee essentially functioned as an alternative form of a visa. The Department emphasized that ETA applications must still be submitted 72 hours before arrival, with the issued ETA remaining valid for travel to Kenya within 90 days.

However, concerns may persist among critics who find the ETA application inflexible, particularly in scenarios involving adjustments to travel plans or emergency situations. Meanwhile, members of the East African Community are exempt from ETA applications, allowing travel with valid passports or national identity cards.

Affordable Housing bill

Kenya’s parliament has voted to approve the Affordable Housing Bill of 2023. The bill aims to establish a legal foundation and structure for the collection of the housing levy, as mandated by a court ruling. There were, however, amendments from both sides of the political spectrum. Amendments introduced during the debate in the house included provisions to regularize the already collected housing levy, allow for voluntary contributions, and establish an independent body tasked with administering the levy. Additionally, the sharing of the levy among various program implementers, including county governments and the National Housing Corporation, was incorporated into the bill. However, the proposal to have the levy deducted from the net or basic salary faced opposition. This led to a section of opposition MPs leaving the chambers, vowing to seek legal recourse against the newly approved law, KBC reports. The bill, now with the introduced amendments, is slated to be forwarded to the Senate for concurrence before being presented to the President for final approval.

Exports to Canada

Kenya and Canada are set to strengthen their bilateral trade and investment ties, Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has revealed. Emphasizing the importance of fostering a robust business environment, Kenya is actively pursuing collaborative efforts with the private sector. Canada stands as a significant trade partner for Kenya, with exports estimated at $18.71 million (Sh2.7 billion) in 2022, based on the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade, the Star reports. Despite this, the trade value between the two nations has seen limited growth, experiencing a decline in Canadian imports for consecutive years in 2020 and 2021. The Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, shared that the Ministry of Trade and Investment is currently engaged in negotiations to expand market access. “Kenya is the gateway to Africa, and therefore your choice of Nairobi as the venue for this 2nd Canada-Africa Business Forum is no doubt strategic," she said.

Fuel prices

The Kenyan government has tripled the tax payable to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) for every litre of fuel purchased. The Ministry of Energy recently raised the Petroleum Regulatory Levy from Ksh0.25 to Ksh0.75 per liter, a threefold increase. This specific levy is one among nine taxes and levies imposed on fuel, and the additional funds generated are earmarked for supporting the operations of the energy regulator. The comprehensive list of taxes and levies on fuel includes excise duty, Road Maintenance Levy, Petroleum Development Levy, Railway Development Levy, Anti-Adulteration Levy, Merchant Shipping Levy, Import Declaration Fee, and Value Added Tax (VAT), the East African reports. Despite the significant hike in the Petroleum Regulatory Levy, the increase went relatively unnoticed, as the energy regulator simultaneously reduced the overall fuel price by Ksh1 per liter.

Kenya’s Eurobond

Kenya’s Eurobond yields have recently entered single-digit territory, signalling a positive shift in investor sentiment after the partial repayment of the Ksh285.6 billion ($2 billion) debut Eurobond. As investor fears dissipate, interest rates on the Eurobond maturing in June have seen a notable decline, dropping to 9.93 percent as of Monday's close, down from a peak of 15.09 percent recorded on February 9, 2024. This trend is mirrored in other Eurobond issuances, with yields on the seven-year sovereign bond maturing in 2027 hitting a low of 8.611 percent, down from 11.64 percent over the same period. An economist at IC Asset Managers, Churchill Ogutu, told the East African that “the risk premium attached to the 2024 Eurobond has eased, leading to the fall in yields. This has had the contagion effect of cutting yields in other issued Eurobonds as investors begin to look at Kenyan assets favorably.” Similarly, yields on the 10-year Eurobond maturing in 2028, the 12-year bond maturing in 2032, and the 13-year bond maturing in 2034 have all experienced declines, settling at 9.475 percent, 9.939 percent, and 9.749 percent, respectively. The move towards single-digit yields reflects a growing confidence among investors, potentially driven by the partial repayment of the debut Eurobond and improving economic conditions.

Online visitor registration fees

The Department of Immigration and Citizen Services has announced that citizens of Ethiopia and several other nations will no longer be required to pay the $30 fee per traveler when applying for entry to Kenya. The fee will no longer be applicable to citizens of Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Eritrea, Mozambique, San Marino, and South Africa. The exemption for these countries, effective February 15, is attributed to the visa abolition agreements or bilateral visa waiver agreements they have established with Kenya, the Nation reports. Bacha Debele, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, expressed gratitude for Kenya's swift decision to eliminate the payment requirement for Ethiopian citizens seeking eTA, the Nation reports. He clarified that while Ethiopian citizens can now enter Kenya without a visa-related payment, the mandatory completion of the eTA form online before arrival remains in place.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) stated in a statement on January 2 that President William Ruto’s initiative to eliminate visa requirements for all foreign nationals travelling to the East African nation will take longer than expected.

According to the KCAA, the policy will not take effect until the government's announced modifications to the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system are disseminated.

“All travellers coming to Kenya from countries that require visas shall continue applying for visas in the usual manner until the government communicates more on the ETA system,” said the KCAA in a statement .

"Following the presidential directive that Kenya will be a visa-free country from January 2024, an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system is in the process of development and implementation. The digital platform will ensure that all travellers to Kenya are identified in advance," the authority added.

President Ruto announced in December 2023 that foreign nationals will no longer require visas to visit Kenya beginning January 2024.

Seychelles is world’s most romantic destination

Seychelles has also been reported as the most prosperous nation in Sub-Saharan Africa with its economy remaining highly dependent on tourism, the World Bank reports.

"Truly Another World, Seychelles calls for escapism in romance. Our small paradise, where blue waters whisper love stories and a soft breeze conveys a romantic tune. It is without a doubt that whoever experiences the destination would uncover the chapters of their love story," Director General of Destination Marketing, Bernadette Willemin is quoted by Seychelles News Agency.

One of the awe-inspiring sites in Seychelles is the Aldabra Atoll, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1982. The atoll is situated among the outer islands of Seychelles and stands as one of the two heritage sites overseen by the Seychelles Island Foundation (SIF). Here’s a peak into some magical havens on the Atoll.

Fauna and flora

The atoll's marine life and untouched beaches create an ideal habitat for these reptiles. Globally recognized as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), green turtles have faced severe population declines due to factors such as hunting, fishing by-catch, and alterations to coastal habitats.

The atoll of Aldabra boasts a wealth of biodiversity, harbouring around 273 species of flowering plants, shrubs, and ferns. Within this botanical composition, one can find notable specimens such as the tropicbird orchid, Aldabra lily, and the white mangrove, Holidify reports.

"Renowned as a paradisiacal haven for romance, the archipelago's natural splendour provides a tranquil and picturesque backdrop for couples yearning to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The exquisite beaches, flanked by swaying palms and lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters, are ideal for romantic strolls, picnics, and sunset strolls. Seychelles provides various opportunities for couples to spend quality time together, whether in a private cove or on a busy beach," Willemin said.

Giant tortoise population

The Aldabra Atoll is home the world-famous Aldabra giant tortoise. It is currently the world's most significant population, exceeding 150,000 tortoises. These tortoises represent the final remnants of a once widespread life form across various Indian Ocean islands, with Aldabra now serving as their sole remaining natural habitat.

A comprehensive monitoring effort has been ongoing since 1998, focusing on the tortoises' seasonal distribution, patterns, as well as size and sex differences across the islands within the atoll. This sustained observation aids in understanding and preserving these remarkable species.

Aldabra tortoises, with a lifespan of up to 150 years, can attain weights of up to 250 kilograms. An exemplary case is Jonathan, an Aldabra giant tortoise residing on the island of St Helena in the Atlantic. Guinness World Records has bestowed upon Jonathan the title of the "oldest tortoise ever." Transferred from Seychelles to St. Helena in 1882 under British administration when he was approximately 50, Jonathan reached the remarkable age of 191 in the year 2023.

The Aldara Atoll itself

Renowned as one of the largest atolls globally, Aldabra comprises four main atolls, Picard, Grand Terre, Malabar, and Polymnie. These coral islands, elevated 8 meters above sea level, encircle a vast lagoon, encompassed by a thriving coral reef exhibiting a wealth of diverse marine life, Seychelles News Agency reports.

Aldabra boasts dimensions of 35 km by 15 km, making it the largest among the Seychelles islands. Covering an expansive land area of around 155 km2, with a total protected area reaching 2559 km2 (encompassing the lagoon, land, and marine protected region).

The Aldabra is also a sanctuary of impressive proportions. Notably, the largest populated island in Seychelles, Mahe, could comfortably fit within the confines of Aldabra's expansive lagoon.

The Republic of Seychelles is situated northeast of Madagascar and comprises an archipelago of 115 islands. With a total population of 107,000 residents, three-quarters of the populace reside on the primary island of Mahé. Seychelles boasts the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Africa, standing at $15.8 billion in 2022.
