$6,000 a night near MetLife Stadium? How World Cup demand is warping housing costs

The surge is most visible around MetLife Stadium, which will host a major slate of matches during the tournament, running from June 11 to July 19. Hosts and property managers say demand expectations are so strong that homeowners are willing to temporarily move out to cash in on the event.

Bobby Roufaeal, who manages more than a dozen short-term rentals in New Jersey, said a high-end property could generate as much as US$240,000 over the tournament period. He said he has been raising rates for his units and has been approached by homeowners looking for help listing their properties for the World Cup rush. Some have told him they plan to stay with relatives for weeks to free up their homes for paying guests.

A six-bedroom property in Princeton, New Jersey, is being offered at roughly US$6,000 per night during the tournament, despite being more than an hour’s drive from MetLife. The pricing suggests the housing effect will extend well beyond stadium-adjacent neighbourhoods, as visitors spill into suburbs and smaller cities.

The New York Times has reported that hotel rates in host cities could jump sharply around opening matches, compounding costs for fans already paying for expensive flights and tickets. Airbnb has also offered incentives, including cash for first-time hosts, to encourage more listings as demand rises.

For supporters trying to follow their teams, the accommodation hunt is becoming part of the World Cup strategy. Mehdi Salem, who runs a French fan association organising trips for dozens of members, said he has had to get creative, booking early, packing more people into fewer rooms, and looking outside Manhattan to boroughs like the Bronx and Queens and to less tourist-heavy parts of New Jersey, to keep costs under control. “Some prices are totally ridiculous,” he said.

The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 across three host nations; the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Tourists travel from Punta Arenas to the island to witness penguins nesting and raising their chicks, with ferry operators offering guided trips that also allow visitors to spot whales, sea lions and seabirds depending on the season. Many visitors describe the experience as a rare opportunity to see wildlife up close in a fragile and remote ecosystem.

The site has also become a focal point for conservation concerns, as visitors and local rangers warn that the penguin population has declined sharply in recent years. According to estimates cited by park authorities, breeding pairs on the island have fallen to around 6,000, down from more than 60,000 in the late 2000s, underscoring growing worries about the long-term survival of the species.

Bali’s crackdown on ‘low-quality tourism’ in 2026: What visitors should know

Under the proposed policy , foreign visitors arriving in Bali may be required to show proof of adequate financial means before being allowed entry. This could include a review of bank savings from the previous three months. Authorities also plan to assess how long tourists intend to stay and what activities they plan to undertake on the island.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster said the measures are part of a push to ensure that tourism brings sustainable benefits to local communities rather than straining infrastructure and social norms.

“One aspect of quality tourism is the amount of money in visitors’ savings accounts over the past three months,” Koster said at a tourism event in Gianyar, adding that visitor behaviour and purpose of travel would also be considered.

Why Bali is doing this

Bali has struggled with the side effects of mass tourism, including traffic congestion, environmental damage, illegal work by tourists, and rising cases of disrespectful behaviour at cultural and religious sites. Officials say budget travellers who overstay visas or seek informal work have added pressure to public services.

By tightening entry requirements, the provincial government hopes to attract visitors who can afford longer, more responsible stays and who contribute more consistently to the local economy.

Who could be affected

The policy is expected to apply mainly to international tourists, particularly those planning extended stays. Short-term holidaymakers may face fewer checks, but authorities have not yet released detailed guidelines.

Digital nomads, long-stay tourists and backpackers are likely to be most affected, especially if they cannot demonstrate sufficient funds or clear travel plans.

Officials stress that the policy is not meant to discourage tourism, but to reset it. “This is about quality, not quantity,” Bali authorities say.

The initiative, which is expected to formally launch on January 26, is part of Jakarta’s effort to reconnect with its global diaspora while maintaining its long-standing ban on dual citizenship for adults. Indonesia currently allows dual nationality only for children , who must choose a single citizenship when they reach adulthood.

According to Edy Eko Putranto, Director General for Residence Permits at the Immigration Department, at least five people have already applied for the programme, though their applications are still under review.

“We are involving a team to make those reviews first. We have to find out whether these people are eligible or not,” Edy told state news agency Antara.

Who qualifies?

Eligibility for the GCI programme extends beyond former Indonesian citizens. It also includes: Children and grandchildren of former Indonesian nationals, spouses of Indonesian citizens, and children born to marriages between Indonesian citizens and foreigners. However, the programme comes with strict exclusions. It does not apply to individuals from territories that were once part of Indonesia, nor to people linked to separatist movements. Those who have served as civil servants, intelligence officers or military personnel in foreign countries are also barred from applying.

What does it offer?

Successful applicants will receive an unlimited stay permit, allowing them to live and work in Indonesia without the need for repeated visa renewals. While it stops short of full citizenship, the permit provides long-term legal stability and access to employment benefits that many in the Indonesian diaspora have long sought.

Officials have described the scheme as a practical alternative to dual citizenship, balancing national sovereignty concerns with the desire to attract skills, investment and cultural ties from overseas Indonesians.

In Nanjian County, around 2,000 acres of terraced slopes are covered by winter cherry blossoms, offering a landscape that contrasts with the snow and cold typically associated with the season elsewhere in the country.

Aerial views show cherry trees spreading across rolling hills alongside long-established tea plantations, creating a distinctive visual setting that has boosted the area’s profile among photographers and visitors. The seasonal bloom has increasingly positioned Wuliang Mountain as a winter destination, particularly for travellers seeking natural scenery outside peak holiday periods.

Early morning conditions are especially popular with visitors, as mist often settles over the terraces and soft light enhances the colours of the blossoms. These conditions have helped establish the area as a frequent subject for social media and travel photography, contributing to its growing recognition beyond Yunnan.

Local residents highlight that the Cherry Valley offers a different winter experience compared with nearby regions known for colder temperatures and snowfall. For communities around Dali, the annual bloom has become both a source of local pride and an opportunity to attract visitors during months that are typically quieter for tourism.

Known as the Wuliang Mountain Cherry Valley, the area combines natural scenery with cultural and agricultural landscapes. As global travel trends increasingly favour seasonal and experience-based tourism, the winter blossoms of Wuliang Mountain have emerged as a practical example of how natural cycles can support local economies while reshaping perceptions of winter travel in China.

Why Christmas is getting more expensive in Africa: The Ghana-Nigeria story

Originally a grassroots celebration fuelled by music , nightlife and homecoming trips by the African diaspora, Detty December has grown into a global tourism phenomenon. That popularity, however, has come with a price.

Each December, thousands of visitors, many from Europe and North America , descend on cities like Accra and Lagos. The surge in demand pushes up prices across flights, accommodation, transport and entertainment.

Airfares on popular routes to West Africa can more than double during the festive season, with some travellers paying thousands of dollars for last-minute tickets. Hotel prices in prime areas such as Osu and Labone in Accra or Victoria Island in Lagos often rise, sometimes doubling compared to off-season rates.

Food and drink prices also spike, with restaurants and bars charging festive premiums for everyday items. Large concerts and high-profile parties add to the expense, with ticket prices placing many events out of reach for average earners and locals.

Inflation and weak currencies

These seasonal pressures are compounded by existing economic challenges. Both Ghana and Nigeria have faced high inflation and currency weakness, pushing up the cost of imported goods, fuel and food, staples of the festive season.

In Nigeria, inflation has driven up transport and grocery prices, making Christmas spending harder even without added tourism demand. In Ghana, a weaker cedi has increased costs across the board, affecting locals and visitors alike.

Locals feel priced out

While Detty December has brought major economic benefits, Ghana’s Tourism Authority says visitors generated a record $4.8 billion, while Lagos alone earned more than $70 million last year, critics say ordinary residents are increasingly being priced out of their own cities.

Rents rise, basic goods become more expensive, and public spaces are reshaped to cater to wealthier visitors. For many locals, the festive season now means higher living costs rather than celebration.

Social media has amplified these concerns, with many Ghanaians and Nigerians questioning whether the festivities still serve the wider population.

Is Detty December slowly dying?

The growing costs have also sparked debate about whether Detty December is becoming unsustainable. Some travellers report “Detty December fatigue”, budgeting more carefully or opting for smaller gatherings instead of big-ticket events. On social media, some Ghanaian X user even prayed for the death of Detty December in the country. For others, it was about congestion, traffic and mainly poorly organised shows.

In Ghana, the label itself has come under scrutiny. Kofi Okyere-Darko, the country’s Director of Diaspora Affairs, has said he is uncomfortable with the term being linked to Ghana’s national image, despite the tourism boom it brings.

Heinz Julen, a well-known architect from the nearby village of Zermatt, wants to construct a 260-metre tower, called “Lena Peak”, on farmland at the base of the mountain. The €500 million project would include low-cost housing for local residents on the lower floors and luxury apartments for wealthy buyers at the top, along with shops, restaurants and a 2,500-seat concert hall.

Julen argues the tower could help ease Zermatt’s housing crisis. The village’s population of 5,800 swells to around 40,000 in winter, pushing property prices to some of the highest in Europe. Many locals have been priced out, he says, and need affordable housing.

But the reaction so far has been largely negative. Critics warn the development would worsen overtourism, strain infrastructure , and dramatically alter views of the Matterhorn, one of Switzerland’s most famous natural symbols. Tourism groups and residents say the project risks turning the quiet alpine valley into a commercial “mountain city.”

Online, the pushback has been even sharper, with some joking that developers may as well “dig up the Matterhorn and build apartments inside it.”

The proposal remains at an early stage, with no approvals granted.

Between January and October 2025, the country received 8.56 million visitors, with all major regions showing notable increases.

The Minister further called on all South Africans to "continue showing the spirit of Ubuntu and hospitality that defines our nation" to make every visitor feel at home.

Minister of Tourism Patricia De Lille said, "South Africa is ready to welcome the world this festive season with open arms, warm smiles, and world-class experiences."

Below is the regional breakdown;

African markets recorded the fastest growth, with arrivals from land-based neighbouring countries rising by 26.7%, while air arrivals from the continent increased by 28%, driven largely by strong demand from the DRC (+58%), Nigeria (+42%) and Kenya (+27%). Tourism officials say improved airline connections and streamlined visa processes have played a key role in boosting regional travel.

Arrivals from Europe rose by 29%, with the UK (+35%) and Germany (+31%) contributing most to the gains. North America recorded a 22% increase, largely due to an increase from Canada (+47%) and steady growth from the United States (+18%).

Asia posted 11% growth, while arrivals from the Middle East increased by 58%, making it one of the fastest-growing markets. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the broad-based growth indicated a “renewed confidence in South Africa as a destination” and stronger collaboration across the tourism sector.

Key tourist centres often visited by tourists include Cape Town’s Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, Boulders Beach, Kruger National Park for safaris and Johannesburg’s historical museums.

Why foreigners are being targeted in Japan’s new travel tax plan

The new measures, expected to roll out from 2026, include an increase in the airport departure tax, higher visa processing fees, and a new pre-entry screening charge. Government officials say Japan’s current fees are low by international standards and must be updated.

The move also comes as Japan looks for ways to pay for major domestic commitments such as expanding free high school tuition, a policy that needs long-term funding but is politically sensitive if imposed on voters.

Why is Japan raising fees now?

The government says travel infrastructure is under financial strain. Officials argue that busier airports, tighter border controls and digital systems require new investment. They insist that those who use these services, particularly international travellers, should contribute more to their upkeep, The Asahi Shimbun reports.

What fees are likely to increase?

The current departure tax, introduced in 2019, is expected to rise. Visa and residency application fees are also under review, with the government aiming to bring them in line with countries such as the United States and those in Europe.

A new online entry authorisation system, known as the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (JESTA), is also being planned for visitors from visa-waiver countries. It will require travellers to apply in advance and pay a fee, similar to the U.S. ESTA system.

Will Japanese citizens be affected?

While the departure tax applies to all passengers leaving Japan, officials have suggested cutting passport renewal fees for Japanese citizens to offset the increase. However, foreign nationals would not benefit from such adjustments.

At an inauguration ceremony, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, said the reopening was a major boost for the country’s cultural tourism.

The extensive conservation effort involved the biological treatment of the tomb’s walls, the restoration of its vivid ancient paintings and carvings, and the structural reinforcement of its pillars.

“The restoration project spanned more than two decades of meticulous conservation work, including photogrammetry and detailed documentation,” said Mohamed Ismail, head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. “Thankfully, the final phase was completed last year, allowing the tomb to reopen to visitors. This milestone enhances Egypt’s cultural tourism landscape, adding a new highlight to the Valley of the Kings,” he added.

“Notably, a colony of bats had taken up residence in the tomb, and the restoration team worked tirelessly to remove all traces of their presence,” Ismail told Viory.

Originally discovered in 1799, the tomb contains a grand burial chamber for Amenhotep III, flanked by two adjoining chambers believed to have been built for his wives. Each chamber is adorned with intricate stone columns, hieroglyphs, and motifs celebrating the pharaoh’s reign. The restoration, supported by Japan, Italian experts, and UNESCO, began in 2004 and was completed in 2024.

A Predictive Mobility study shows that a 10% reduction in ticket prices could raise demand from 22.3 million to over 30 million passengers annually. However, currently, taxes account for 25 - 30% of airfares, with passengers on the Entebbe - Nairobi route paying up to $100 in levies on return tickets costing between $300 and $350. Departure taxes also vary widely across the region, from $77.5 in Kinshasa to $31 in Addis Ababa. Central and West Africa have more favourable regimes, with average savings of $12.68 and $10.12 per passenger, respectively, according to the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).

Analysts say the high charges make African carriers less competitive than foreign airlines operating from regions with lower taxation . East African officials are now pushing for reforms. Andrea Aguer Ariik, EAC Deputy Secretary General, has urged member states to fast-track the signing of EAC Air Transport Market Liberalisation Regulations, which would open up regional skies under a multilateral framework.

“Once adopted by the SC-TCM and thereafter signed and ratified by the partner States, the air transport market in the EAC will be fully liberalised. Partner states will subsequently negotiate their regional air transport bilateral arrangements under the Multilateral Air Services Agreement,” said Ariik during the 19th Meeting of Directors General of Civil Aviation and Airports Authorities.

Authorities, tourism leaders and citizens have urged the government to act swiftly, including seeking support from UNESCO, to safeguard the Inca citadel’s international prestige.

The alarm was raised after reports pointed to a series of problems: irregular ticket sales, rising prices, transport difficulties, and poor coordination between tour operators and state institutions. Experts warn that these issues not only threaten Machu Picchu’s reputation but could undermine the livelihoods of millions of Peruvians who depend on tourism. According to industry data, more than 6.5 million people in the country are tied to the sector.

Local leaders in Cusco, including the regional governor, have criticised the central government’s management and called for greater decentralisation or even an autonomous authority for the site. Former foreign minister Óscar Maúrtua argued that poor services and overlapping responsibilities are damaging the visitor experience and stressed the need for urgent reforms. He and others have suggested that Peru request technical assistance from UNESCO or the World Tourism Organisation.

Machu Picchu remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a status that is not currently under review. However, the potential loss of its ‘Wonder of the World’ designation carries symbolic and economic weight. Business leaders warn that the site has become a “political prize” in domestic disputes, and that ongoing mismanagement risks eroding Peru’s global standing as a leading tourist destination.

In particular, Hakuba, located in Nagano Prefecture, has become a global magnet for winter sports enthusiasts. The number of overnight stays by foreign visitors has more than doubled in less than a decade, rising from 100,000 in 2015 to 250,000 in 2023.

The Japanese ski resort of Hakuba is tightening its rules on visitor behaviour after years of growing frustration over disruptive incidents linked to booming inbound tourism. Local officials have announced plans to introduce fines of up to 50,000 yen ($340) for nuisances such as late-night fireworks, littering, noisy street gatherings, and even vehicles without proper snow tyres.

The new penalties are set to be introduced through a revised ordinance by December, just in time for the peak winter ski season. But with that growth has come a rise in problems, graffiti and sticker vandalism, loud late-night parties spilling onto the streets, littering, and fireworks disturbing residents. Officials say that while earlier rules, banning street drinking, smoking, and skiing on public roads, helped, they no longer go far enough.

“Our goal is not to punish visitors harshly but to set clear boundaries and protect the community’s quality of life,” one village representative explained.

The revised ordinance will empower authorities to impose fines on anyone, whether local or foreign, who violates community rules. While the aim is to warn and discourage disruptive behaviour rather than immediately penalise, repeat offenders or serious cases could face the maximum fine.

Tourists are being urged to show respect by avoiding late-night fireworks or noisy outdoor parties; disposing of trash properly; using snow tyres during winter driving; and refraining from vandalism, including graffiti or stickers on public property.

Officials credit Zanzibar’s success to its strategy of diversifying beyond Europe by targeting regional African markets while also cultivating interest from India, Russia , and China. This strategy has created a more resilient tourism sector that can tap both long-haul and regional flows.

In terms of continental and regional breakdown, while Europe continues to dominate overall arrivals, Kenya and South Africa stood out as key African markets. Kenya led with 4,515 visitors, a 78.9 percent leap from last year, making up 4.3 percent of all arrivals. South Africa followed with 2,802 visitors, or 2.7 percent of the total, despite a year-on-year decline. Together, the two countries contributed over a third of all African visitors, The Citizen reports.

Europeans accounted for 61.5 percent of arrivals, indicating Zanzibar’s appeal to long-haul holidaymakers. Italy topped the charts with 16,507 visitors (15.6 percent of the total), followed by the UK at 7.7 percent.

Leisure remains Zanzibar’s biggest draw. An overwhelming 99.2 percent of visitors cited holidays as their reason for travel , with most staying about a week. The average length of stay was 8.2 days, fueling high hotel demand. About 913,911 hotel bed spaces were sold, which also represents an 88.5 percent occupancy rate.

Roughly 90 percent of visitors arrived by air, with 68,331 flying in on international flights and 26,964 arriving via domestic routes. Another 10,211 travelled by sea from mainland Tanzania.

Charity Derby Akeiti, the only female muralist at this year’s festival, has been live-painting with Chale Wote for eight years. She told Viory that her mural was inspired by the theme “The Orbs Beneath the Nile Lead to Kongo”, which highlights the vision of African leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Patrice Lumumba.

“This unity is what I'm trying to build up. At the end of the day, we'll have a beautiful Africa for us to live in,” Akeiti said. “This is ‘Gbomo Adesa’, a human being who does not have the external force influencing him or his natural resources being touched.”

The festival also highlights innovation in sustainable fashion, amongst others. Pearl Tetteh, a fashion student, showcased dresses made from plastic bags and broken CDs.

“I want to show everybody that when it comes to the fashion industry, nothing is useless,” she explained.

Other artists explored creative reuse of everyday materials like paper.

Nii Lomotey, a student at the University of Education, Winneba, used discarded exam papers to make sculptural works.

“Contemporary art has given us the power to collect things in the environment to create,” he said, adding, “Some are creating with plastics, some with rubbers, some with leaves. For me, it’s paper.”

The Chale Wote Festival is a week-long celebration of community-focused art.

Footage of the encounter shows hotel employees using a stick and rope in a cautious attempt to remove the massive lizard from the ceiling, Viory reports.

The reptile is seen wedged in the ceiling panels before it suddenly crashes to the floor, leaving staff and guests visibly startled. Workers then quickly secured the animal with ropes and carried it out of the room.

Komodo dragons, native to parts of southeastern Indonesia, are the world ’s largest lizards. While attacks on humans are rare, they can be dangerous due to their sharp teeth, powerful claws, and venomous bite.

Their venom prevents blood from clotting, which can lead to excessive bleeding and, in some cases, death without prompt medical attention.

The announcement was made on July 11 during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris.

Drone footage released on Monday showed the majesty of the “Oriental Pyramids,” located in the foothills of the Helan Mountains in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Covering 40 square kilometers, the site is considered one of the world’s most remarkable imperial mausoleum complexes.

Tourism has surged since the UNESCO listing, with local authorities now limiting daily visitors to protect the site while encouraging off-peak travel. “This year, when I heard that the application for World Heritage was successful, I came to the Western Xia Tombs again. My feeling this year was that there were so many people here,” said one tourist.

Visitors have been captivated by the grandeur of the mausoleums. “At that time, I felt that this building was really magnificent, and I could feel how glorious it was a long, long time ago,” another tourist told Viory.

“They all heard that the Xixia Imperial Tombs in Ningxia were listed as a World Heritage Site, and then came here to admire it. More tourists came from different places just to appreciate the unique style and appearance of the Xixia Imperial Tombs,” one volunteer explained.

Another volunteer added that, “From the first moment I set foot on that place, I felt like I was in contact with ancient relics from many years ago, and I felt like I was in a dialogue with time and space . So I think going to those ruins is very valuable and very tangible.”

Foreign tourists banned from newly opened beach resort

North Korea has barred foreign tourists from entering its newly opened Wonsan-Kalma beach resort, just weeks after promoting it as a world-class destination. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the state-run DPR Korea Tour website announced on July 18, 2025, that the resort would temporarily stop accepting foreign visitors, without giving reasons or a timeline. The ban comes shortly after Kim Jong-un hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov there on July 12, calling him the first foreign guest and signalling efforts to promote the site internationally. Lavrov reportedly pledged support to boost tourism. The multi-million dollar project, delayed by sanctions and the pandemic, finally opened on June 24. Domestic tourism officially began July 1, with state media hailing the resort as a “national treasure-level tourist town.” Kim praised it as one of North Korea’s greatest achievements of the year.

Russia causes alarm with official North Korea visit

Russia and North Korea are deepening their relationship during a three-day visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, aimed at aligning views on the Ukraine war. Lavrov’s visit follows an earlier trip by Russian security chief Sergei Shoigu, who confirmed that North Korea sent thousands of military workers and reportedly around 12,000 troops to support Russia. In return, concerns are rising that Kim Jong Un may seek advanced Russian military technology, potentially escalating his nuclear capabilities. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Lavrov on July 10 to discuss peace talks, though he noted that President Trump remains frustrated with Russia’s lack of flexibility.

The strange disappearance of the US-North Korea conflict

If you had fallen into a coma in early 2018 and awakened in 2025, you might be surprised by the silence surrounding the once-volatile US–North Korea conflict . Just a few years ago, tensions were at a boiling point. North Korea, seen by many in the West as unpredictable and hostile, was rapidly advancing its nuclear weapons program—conducting test explosions and missile launches while openly threatening the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. At the time, President Obama had warned his successor, Donald Trump, that North Korea posed a major security threat. The Trump administration adopted a hardline stance, signalling it was prepared for military intervention if necessary. Top officials labelled a nuclear-capable North Korea “intolerable,” and Trump famously vowed, “It won’t happen,” warning that any threats would be met with “fire and fury.”

North Korea is becoming increasingly isolated from the world

For years, experts and U.S. officials have stressed that North Korea’s human rights abuses must be addressed alongside its nuclear ambitions. The regime funds its weapons programmes through repression, forced labour, and cyber theft. The U.S. Congress recognised this in 2004 with the North Korean Human Rights Act, which prioritised human rights in diplomatic talks and authorised funding for independent media broadcasts and intelligence gathering. Though Congress renewed the law in 2008, 2012, and 2017, it lapsed in 2022. Despite this, funding has continued through the State Department’s human rights bureau. Ending this support would deprive the U.S. of vital insights as North Korea expands its global military presence and tightens control at home.

South Korea revives nuclear sub plans after North Korea’s progress

Facing increased threats from North Korea and Pacific tensions, South Korea is revisiting plans for nuclear-powered submarines to boost defence autonomy. On July 18, 2025, Foreign Minister nominee Cho Hyun announced plans to renegotiate the 123 Agreement with the U.S. to enable such development. Cho aims to revise the treaty to allow for nuclear sub capabilities, enhancing South Korea's deterrence and reducing reliance on the U.S. Navy. He noted that following internal review and U.S. coordination, the submarines may be introduced as part of a broader strategic upgrade.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the 11th annual Christmas in July trade show at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on Thursday, Jamaica Observer reports.

He noted a 2% growth in tourism for the first quarter of the year, which contributed to a 1% overall increase in national economic performance during the same period.

“After Hurricane Beryl and all the disruptions, travel advisories, political and geopolitical issues, we are back on the growth path, and that’s going to continue,” Bartlett declared.

The minister anticipates a significant increase in tourism earnings for the current quarter, particularly in comparison to the same period last year, when the island was recovering from Beryl's impact . “I’m worried about how big the growth is going to look for this quarter,” he remarked, “because… you’re comparing a Beryl period to now, a normal period. But that’s how growth goes. The good news is that you’re back to where you were in 2023.”

Addressing the 180 exhibitors and local entrepreneurs showcasing Jamaican-made goods at the trade show, he encouraged them to take advantage of the growing tourism numbers by aligning their products with the sector’s rising demand.

According to an announcement published Thursday on a consular services account affiliated with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement applies to holders of Chinese official and ordinary passports, as well as Malaysian ordinary passport holders.

Eligible travelers can stay up to 30 days per visit, with a cumulative maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period, Global Times reports.

The policy is seen as a major step forward in strengthening bilateral ties and boosting people-to-people exchanges. It comes amid growing travel demand between the two nations and is expected to significantly ease short-term mobility for individuals engaged in leisure, family, and commercial activities.

Travel platform Qunar.com reported that Malaysia is among the top three overseas destinations for Chinese tourists this summer, with a 43% year-on-year increase in hotel bookings. Popular Malaysian cities include Kuala Lumpur, Tawau, and Langkawi. In terms of outbound international air travel from China, Kuala Lumpur ranked as the most popular destination on the platform.

In its Monthly Economic Review for June 2025, the BoT reported that the tourism sector generated $3.92 billion in earnings during the year ending May 2025, up from $3.63 billion the previous year. This surge represents 55.1 percent of all service-related receipts, placing tourism just ahead of gold, which brought in $3.83 billion in the same period, the Citizen Tanzania reports.

“The increase in travel receipts was largely attributed to a rise in international tourist arrivals, which increased to 2,170,360 from 1,961,870 over the same period,” the central bank noted.

In response to this momentum, the government has enacted new measures to further support the sector, particularly through regulatory reforms.

One of the most notable changes came on July 8, 2025, when the BoT issued a formal exemption to tour operators from certain provisions of the Foreign Exchange Use Regulations of 2025.

This policy shift follows a May 2 public notice by the BoT, reaffirming that all domestic transactions must be conducted in Tanzanian shillings under Government Notice No. 198, a move aimed at curbing dollarisation and stabilising the national currency.

The decision follows concerns over road safety and accountability after several high-profile traffic accidents involving foreign drivers.

Under the current system, foreigners with valid licenses from their home countries can obtain Japanese licenses if they pass basic knowledge and driving skill tests. However, the process does not require applicants to prove long-term residency, allowing some visitors to register hotels or temporary addresses, raising law enforcement concerns about accountability in the event of accidents.

Starting October 1, the revised system will require all applicants to present a certificate of residence, effectively limiting conversions to foreign residents living in Japan. Tourists will instead be required to use an international driving permit based on the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, Japan Times reports.

Authorities also plan to toughen the licensing process itself. The written test will expand from 10 to 50 questions, and applicants must now score at least 90 percent to pass. The practical driving test will also have stricter grading criteria.

A recent agency survey of 15 countries found that none allowed tourists to convert licenses. Japan recorded a sharp increase in conversions in 2023, with about 68,000 foreign applicants.

Costa Rica Roundup: Farms threaten wildlife, safeguarding coral reefs, tourism spikes

Tourism sector faces competitiveness challenges

Costa Rica’s tourism sector is witnessing modest growth despite significant competitiveness challenges, as reported by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). In April 2025, international arrivals rose by 4.6%, yet concerns persist over exchange rate issues, higher costs, inadequate infrastructure, and public safety. Tourism Minister William Rodríguez anticipates an overall growth of 2-4% for the year, while industry leaders advocate for changes to stabilise the economy and improve safety, highlighting the need for structural reforms.

Costa Rica’s farms threaten wildlife

Costa Rica has one of the world’s highest per capita pesticide use . Banana and pineapple farming uses large amounts of chemicals like mancozeb, chlorothalonil, paraquat, and glyphosate—all to maximise production, with little regard for the negative impacts. In the Central Pacific coastal area, palm oil plantations—many replacing former banana farms—dominate the landscape. Palm oil, found in products from peanut butter to shampoo, requires clearing all vegetation, destroying biodiversity in the process.

Legislation to protect marine ecosystems

Independent Congresswoman Kattia Cambronero has introduced a bill aimed at safeguarding Costa Rica’s coral reefs and seagrass beds, addressing threats from pollution and climate change. The bill mandates the creation of a national marine wetlands inventory and establishes protocols for restoration projects. While aiming to enhance marine biodiversity, the legislation is seen as a necessary step amidst challenges, including recent coastal laws that could harm marine ecosystems.

Threat of parasites to howler monkeys

Research by the Awá Science and Conservation Association has linked a bot fly larvae outbreak in howler monkeys to tourism and land use changes in Costa Rica. The findings indicate that habitat disruption from tourism activities is weakening the immune systems of these monkeys, making them more vulnerable to infestations. The study calls for non-chemical solutions and highlights the need for continuous monitoring to protect these species and their ecosystems.

Road blockades amid Chiquita strike

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino is demanding the end of road blockades set by unions representing workers of Chiquita Brands, who are striking over recent layoffs and pension reforms. With 5,000 workers dismissed and significant operational losses incurred, the president’s stance is that the blockades must be lifted permanently to progress with legislative solutions. The situation has led to limited access to crucial supplies in the affected region of Bocas del Toro, exacerbating tensions between unions and the government.

The once-vacant single-family house and the nearby church he attended have become points of reflection and pride for many.

Locals recall the pope’s working-class roots and how the neighborhood church served as a cornerstone of community life. “It’s just mind-blowing to think that it started here in our humble little town,” Sally Rock, 65, who grew up in Dolton told the AFP.

Others, like former resident Lea Morgan, expressed concern about the area’s decline, describing it as “dangerous” today. Still, she holds onto hope: “Now that the Pope is here and he’s from this neighborhood, maybe our prayer for peace is being answered.”

Among the first visitors was Nicola Conticello, a 60-year-old tourist from Catania, who arrived at 5 a.m. local time. "I felt the need to be here this morning, to stand in line. It was something I had to do. He was a great man who truly left us a powerful message — a call to help those in need, the poor. A great pope," he told the AFP.

A microbiologist and Catholic deacon from the Netherlands, spoke of his desire to be close to the late pope, saying, "We were at the funeral yesterday, and now we really would like to pray with the Pope."

Pilgrims, dignitaries, and world leaders flooded into the Vatican, with some braving the cold and waiting overnight to secure a place at the historic ceremony.

Among those in attendance were U.S. President Donald Trump , Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, members of European royal families, and red-robed cardinals from across the globe.

The atmosphere was a poignant mix of solemnity and gratitude, with many speaking warmly of Pope Francis’s legacy of humility, compassion, and social justice .

“This is history, and I’m very proud to be here," said Nerina Lyons, an 80-year-old tourist from Houston, Texas. She added, "It’s cold, but I feel warmth anyway because of his love for us. He's watching over us, God is for sure, but also Papa Francesco."

For many pilgrims, the journey to honour the late pontiff was long and marked by deep devotion. Giorgina, a 74-year-old visitor from Peru, recounted spending the night outside the square. “We’ve been here all night. All night outside. They won’t let us through and we want to get in,” she told the AFP.

Others shared stories of unexpected connections forged during their pilgrimage. Eglina, a 29-year-old from Lithuania, said she met fellow mourners on her flight from London. "We’ve been waiting about three hours. It’s been an incredible experience, even just standing here together," she said.

For many, the day was not only about saying goodbye but also about expressing profound gratitude. Marzena, a 47-year-old from Forlì, Italy, spoke through tears. "I thank him for everything he did for the world, for us. He helped me understand so many things. I don't even know how to say it, I'm very emotional," she said. "I want to offer my prayer, from me and from the whole world, especially from the poor, because he was a Pope for the poor. I’m not rich myself," she added.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

Turkey seeks U.S. help to lead Syria rebuild, restrain Israel

Turkey is strategically repositioning its conflict dynamics with Israel, seeking negotiations with the United States instead of continuing confrontations in Syria. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has underscored that Syria should remain a sovereign locale for its people rather than a stage for international powers. Previously, Turkey offered to combat the Islamic State within Syria, tying this proposal to the cessation of U.S. support for Kurdish forces, which aligns with President Trump’s interests in reducing U.S. military involvement in the region, Haaretz reports.

 Mass protests continue

The political landscape in Turkey remains fraught, particularly as opposition leader Ozgur Ozel steers ongoing protests advocating for the release of jailed Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, viewed as President Erdogan’s significant adversary. Following Imamoglu’s detention on corruption charges perceived as politically motivated, large-scale protests have mobilised thousands, including university students. According to US News , Ozel has called for ongoing demonstrations and has emphasised the urgency for early elections ahead of the next scheduled general vote in 2028. A symbolic petition rallying for Imamoglu’s release has attracted over 7 million signatures, reinforcing his status as a viable presidential candidate.

Weight loss surgery goes wrong

British woman named Danielle Peebles has faced severe health ramifications following weight loss surgery in Turkey. Initially aimed at improving her health ahead of her grandson's birth, the operation resulted in paralysis from the neck down due to complications arising from nutritional neuropathy linked to vitamin deficiencies. Peebles, who had opted for the surgery amid prolonged NHS waiting times, experienced initial recovery but subsequently required hospitalisation upon her return to the UK. Despite grim diagnoses about her mobility, she has engaged in rigorous rehabilitation and managed to regain some movement, illustrating significant risks associated with overseas weight loss procedures, as a growing number of cases highlight severe post-operative complications as reported by NDTV .

Turkey holiday prices may drop as inflation hits tourism sector

Holiday prices in Turkey could fall as hotels aim to avoid a repeat of 2024’s low occupancy rates. Popular spots like Bodrum and Antalya saw fewer visitors last year as locals opted for cheaper trips to Greece. Some resorts even shut early to cut losses. Tourism expert Hamit Kuk warns that inflation and poor economic management continue to strain the sector, making it hard for businesses to manage rising costs, Express reports.

Israel strikes Turkish-scoped Syrian bases

Israel's recent air strikes on Syrian military installations, which Turkey considered for a proposed joint defence initiative, have heightened tensions between the two nations. These strikes targeted three air bases and underline Israel’s mounting concern over Turkey's military manoeuvres in the region, particularly given fears surrounding an increasing Islamist influence along its borders. Despite Turkey’s assurances to the U.S. regarding the non-aggressive nature of its military presence in Syria, Israel's actions suggest apprehension regarding possible Turkish military advancements, including the integration of Russian anti-aircraft systems. Hindustan Times reported that the strikes caused considerable damage and raised alarms about potential escalations in regional hostilities, prompting Turkish officials to denounce Israel's actions as a threat to regional stability while expressing a commitment to avoid direct military confrontation.

The move is expected to enhance Uganda’s connectivity with key European business and tourism markets.

Speaking at the launch event held at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki emphasised the strategic importance of the new route, the New Vision reports.

"Uganda's exports to the United Kingdom in the last year were worth $22.6 million. We are confident that our cargo capacity, along with our plans to expand and enhance cargo operations with a freighter later this year, will support the rapid growth of Ugandan exports to the UK," Bamuturaki stated.

She further highlighted that the route would boost Uganda Airlines' international profile and position it more competitively in global aviation markets.

The new route will be serviced by Uganda Airlines’ Airbus A330-800 Neo, which features economy, premium economy, and business class seating. Initial operations will include four flights per week to London Gatwick Airport, marking Uganda Airlines’ third intercontinental destination, following Dubai and Mumbai.

Uganda has lacked direct flight access to the UK since British Airways suspended services nearly a decade ago.

The sharp rise is attributed to relaxed visa policies, extensive tourism promotions, and international recognition through travel awards.

China led the list of visitors, with 955,000 arrivals between January and February, followed by South Korea (885,000) and Taiwan (218,000). India also featured among the top 10 source markets, ranking ninth with 92,000 visitors.

Vietnam's growing appeal as a travel destination is drawing global attention. The country's diverse landscapes, cultural heritage, and thriving food scene continue to attract travellers. The affordability of accommodation, transport, and dining has also positioned Vietnam as a budget-friendly destination.

Adventure tourism has become a major draw, with activities such as trekking, diving, and water sports gaining popularity.

With further tourism development plans underway, industry experts expect international arrivals to continue rising throughout the year.

The government says this move will help boost tourism and bring in more money for the country. The decision follows a meeting of the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee.

Under the new rule, alcohol sales will be allowed on five key Buddhist holidays. These include Makha Bucha Day, Visaka Bucha Day, Asalha Bucha Day, and the start and end of Buddhist Lent.

However, not all places can sell alcohol these days. Only specific venues, such as hotels, airports, tourist areas, and designated events, will get special permission.

The proposal is part of Thailand’s plan to attract more visitors under the “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025” campaign.

The country aims to welcome 39 million tourists and earn 3 trillion baht from tourism this year. The alcohol industry alone brings in around 600 billion baht annually, contributing 150 billion baht to the government in tax revenue.

The proposal still needs to go through a 15-day public review before being sent to the Minister of Public Health and then to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for final approval.

If approved, the new rules could take effect as early as May 11, 2025, on Visaka Bucha Day.

In 2024, travel and tourism was estimated to contribute 7.3% to Africa’s GDP, a rise from the 6.8% recorded the previous year.

Although some countries in the region have been battling conflict and terrorism, political instability, and others, some nations on the continent, besides the rich cultural experience, beautiful natural landscapes, and wildlife experience, offer peaceful and safe travel experiences for visitors.

Altezza Travel, a destination management company in Tanzania with over a decade in the industry, has ranked the top safest countries in Africa.

The company is headquartered in Kilimanjaro—the destination of the world's highest free-standing mountain and Africa’s highest mountain—Mount Kilimanjaro.

Here are the top 5 safest countries in Africa:

Mauritius

With a population of over 1.2 million, Mauritius , an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is ranked as the safest country in Africa.

Ghana

West African nation Ghana , known for being a popular travel destination, especially for Black Americans and Africans in the diaspora, is ranked as the second safest country in the region. The country is also recognised as the first sub-Saharan African country to gain its independence in 1957.

Zambia

The Southern African country Zambia , known for its wildlife, waterways, and Victoria Falls, is ranked as the third safest in Africa. The copper-rich nation is also known for being a pioneer of the walking safari.

Namibia

Another Southern African nation, Namibia , is ranked as one of the safest destinations on the continent—at number four. Namibia is known for its dramatic landscapes, such as the Namib Desert—the world's oldest desert—and also the presence of wildlife.

Morocco

North African nation Morocco is recognised globally for its unique architectural landscape as well as its colourful arts and crafts. The country ranks as the fifth safest nation in Africa.

In addition to official statistics and citizens' perceptions of personal safety, the countries were ranked using these leading global studies: the Human Development Index (HDI), the Global Peace Index (GPI), the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), the KOF Globalisation Index, the Crime Index, the Global Safety Report, and the Global Peace Index.

The tourism boom has bolstered Spain's economy, with the sector contributing approximately 13 percent to the country's GDP, the AFP reports.

"In 2024, the forecast for international tourists is around 94 million, marking a 10 percent increase compared to 2023, which was already a record year," Hereu stated during a press conference in Madrid.

The surge in visitors also brought significant economic gains, with foreign tourists spending an estimated €126 billion ($130 billion) in 2024—a 16 percent rise from the previous year. Spain's growth rates have remained robust, outpacing much of the sluggish eurozone economy, driven in part by strong tourism performance.

However, the tourism boom has sparked tensions in popular destinations. Locals in hotspots such as Barcelona and Malaga have voiced concerns about rising rents and the transformation of their neighbourhoods due to an influx of visitors.

In response, both cities have introduced measures to regulate short-term tourist rentals, aiming to mitigate public discontent and curb skyrocketing housing prices.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is prioritising partnerships with airlines and ambassadors to ensure a full return of international flights and enhanced travel experiences.

“The future of Thai tourism is bright, dynamic and full of opportunities. We are investing in infrastructure, streamlining the visa process, and creating new products and services to ensure that Thailand remains at the forefront of global tourism,” said Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2024 in London, one of the largest global tourism trade events, held from November 5-7.

To support this ambitious target, Thienthong will engage with foreign ambassadors, especially from key markets like the UK, Germany, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, as well as airline representatives. Their discussions will focus on increasing flight availability and planning for the 2025 high season, according to the Bangkok Post .

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reports that Thailand anticipates 9.6 million long-haul visitors in 2024, with an estimated 7.3 million tourists coming from Europe.

In line with its tourism revival efforts, Thailand announced last month that it was introducing an automated biometric identification system using facial recognition technology at six major airports. This system, expected to be operational for international flights by December 1, aims to streamline entry processes and enhance security, marking a significant post-pandemic development in Thailand’s tourism infrastructure.

Through dedicated adjudicators for group tourist applications, the scheme ensures that approved tour operators undergo rigorous screening, ultimately bearing responsibility for all group travellers. Notably, travel data highlights substantial outbound tourism from China and India, with Chinese tourists making over 100 million trips in 2023, reports BAL .

Data from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) indicates that the increase was driven by a 22% rise in tourist arrivals, with 2,026,378 visitors recorded during the period, The East African reports.

“The rise in travel receipts arises from the recovery observed in the tourism industry, reflected by the increase of tourist arrivals by 22 percent to 2,026,378,” the BoT report read.

The BoT’s Monthly Economic Review (MER) for August 2024 revealed that this marked a $531.8 million jump from the previous year, which is the sector's recovery from the global COVID-19 pandemic, which had severely affected travel.

Executive Director of the Hotel Association of Tanzania, Kennedy Edward credited the increase to long-term initiatives between 2021 and 2023, including the adoption of digital visa processing and improved service quality in both public and private sectors.

“Service quality has improved across both public and private sectors, enhancing the overall tourist experience,” Edward said.

Before the pandemic, Tanzania aimed to attract 2 million tourists in 2020, but numbers dropped from 1.3 million in 2019 to just 600,000 in 2020.

The group, which completed the 10,000-kilometre road trip from the Ghanaian capital to the English capital on August 6, 2023, is now planning a 30,000-kilometre road trip that will take them through Paris, Dubai, and Cape Town.

The group made this announcement on their official Facebook page, detailing their upcoming expedition that will begin in Accra and end in Cape Town, with stops in Paris and Dubai.

This year’s journey, set to start in September, Ghana’s tourism month, will feature only six members, a departure from the twelve men and one woman who participated in last year’s trip, local media reports.

The previous expedition, which initially began with little attention, garnered widespread national support as the group travelled through countries such as Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, and France.

Reflecting on the journey , Kwabena Peprah, a member of Wanderlust Ghana, told BBC last year, “We are adventure enthusiasts and tourism enthusiasts. We’ve been driving around our continent, we’ve been driving around our country, and we decided to take it to the next level.”

Due to the popularity of their previous adventure, Wanderlust Ghana have since become tourism ambassadors, partnering with the Ghana Tourism Authority.

While the exact departure date remains undisclosed for security reasons, they are currently chronicling the various cities they plan to visit ahead of the expedition as anticipation is high for this journey across multiple continents.

The initiative, led by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation, will be officially launched on September 27, 2024, during the National Tourism Day celebrations.

The strategy will transform the Northern Cape province, home to the cutting-edge MeerKAT radio telescope, into a global hub for astro-tourism. The MeerKAT will soon be integrated into the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, the world's most powerful radio telescope, further enhancing the region's appeal to stargazers and space enthusiasts, Space in Africa reports.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille emphasised the potential of astro-tourism to drive development in the Karoo region. “We want to use the SKA and astro-tourism as catalysts to develop the Karoo region, providing opportunities for rural tourism and agri-tourism,” she said.

The initiative is also expected to boost the tourism sector's contribution to South Africa's economy, which reached 8.8% of the GDP in the first quarter of 2024, with projections to grow to 10.4% by 2030.

The historic site, which has been closed for extensive restoration since the devastating 2019 fire , remains a top destination for many.

One first-time visitor to Paris, Jake shared his excitement, saying, "We've been taking in a lot of the other sites, and we followed this a little bit and the fact that we knew it was going to be close to opening but not open yet and we're here so after seeing a lot of the other historic sites we definitely want to come back, this is like a bucket list site we would come back and definitely take in. First trip to Paris but not our last.”

Another tourist, Gaëlle who has followed the restoration closely, remarked, "I've watched TV programmes about the work being done. Seeing it now is impressive, and I plan to come back once the restoration is complete."

For some, the sight of Notre Dame is nostalgic. "I remember visiting as a teenager. Even with the damage, it's still awe-inspiring," one visitor noted.

On April 15, 2019, a devastating fire broke out beneath the eaves of Notre Dame Cathedral’s roof. The blaze quickly spread, engulfing the spire and much of the roof. The fire started around 6:30 PM local time and raged through the night, continuing until the following morning.

Sri Lanka is launching a six-month pilot programme on October 1, 2024, offering free 30-day tourist visas on arrival to citizens from 35 countries, including the U.S., UK, Russia, and China, to boost tourism.
Sri Lanka targets Saudi Arabia for tourism boost

Sri Lanka is targeting Saudi Arabia as a crucial market to boost its tourism industry, which has struggled since the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism previously generated $4.4 billion in 2018 but fell below 1% of GDP in 2020. To revive this sector, Arab News adds Sri Lanka has introduced free tourist visas for visitors from 35 countries, including Saudi Arabia.
Arrival of the Indian Navy’s frontline warship

Built at Mazagon Dock Limited and commissioned in 2001, INS Mumbai has completed a mid-life upgrade and is now part of the Eastern Naval Command. According to the Daily Mirror , during its stay, the ship will deliver essential spares for the Sri Lanka Air Force's Dornier maritime patrol aircraft and provide training to SLAF pilots and navigators.
Football controversy

Australian MP Jason Wood criticised a controversial ball change during the third day of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka at Old Trafford. The change, requested by England after the 41st over, drew backlash for benefiting the home team while Sri Lanka was performing well. Wood referenced a similar incident from the previous Ashes series, expressing concern over England's tactics and suggesting they manipulate the game to their advantage, as reported by Newswire . The new ball allowed England's bowlers to capitalise on extra movement, leading to key wickets.

This figure places Mexico sixth globally, surpassing popular destinations like the United Kingdom (37 million), Germany (35 million), and Greece (33 million).

The influx of tourists impacted Mexico's economy with tourism injecting approximately $46.4 billion into the country's GDP in 2023. The sector also witnessed a remarkable 15% growth compared to the previous year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

But the story of Mexico's tourism success goes beyond statistics. According to Statista , the country's commitment to improving its airport and flight infrastructure contributed to the astronomical tourist numbers.

"By developing airport infrastructure and calibrating new direct flights, Mexico has set international tourism high on its priorities list. At the forefront of Mexico's spike in international tourism is the FONATUR, or Mexico's National Fund for Tourism Development. The tourism body worked in the expansion of Cancun's airport and other four key tourist airports in the country. Plus, Mexico City's airport added new international direct flights in the 2010s, resulting in being rated as the best internationally connected airport in Latin America in 2019," Statista reports.

Connolly Cove also attributes Mexico's tourism achievement to destinations like Cancun. It remained the most popular destination attracting 25% of all visitors. Chichen Itza and Tulum, famous for their ancient Mayan ruins also drew 18% of tourists.

Additionally, colonial cities like Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende accounted for 12% of visitors and Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, known for their Pacific beaches, attracted 10% of tourists.

Worry no more! You can have a fulfilling travel experience without breaking the bank. Here are 5 ways to explore the world without emptying your pockets:

Travel to budget-friendly destinations

To enjoy a financially stress-free adventure, start your journey in regions known for their cost-effectiveness. Destinations in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America provide enriching experiences without the excessive costs in pricier areas. According to We Thrift , cities like New Delhi in India and Hanoi in Vietnam are the most affordable places for 2024.

Thoroughly plan your budget

The only way you can explore and enjoy the serene atmosphere of another country without care is by knowing exactly what you want to achieve from the trip. It is essential to know where to visit, what to eat, where to stay and have fun all at affordable rates before you leave your home country. It is important to write a budget for all these activities before your trip to avoid overspending. You can also move to another destination with satisfaction and ease because you stay within your planned budget.

Choose cost-friendly means of travelling

By opting for affordable airlines and public transportation, you can substantially cut travel expenses and free up your budget for unforgettable adventures and delectable culinary experiences. This means you can make the most of your trip by exploring iconic landmarks, indulging in your dream dishes, and creating lasting memories – all without breaking the bank!

Travel during off-peak seasons

It is typical for prices of accommodation and items to surge during seasonal occasions. To save yourself from paying humongous sums of money during a trip, journeying during the quieter times is the best option. This move promises less congestion and lower costs for stay, airfare, and outings. Staying away from the tourist high season lets you benefit from discounted rates and a more economical trip.

Eat like a native

Frequent dining out can deplete your travel funds, particularly in sought-after tourist spots. To economise, shop at neighbourhood markets and cook using local, reasonably priced produce. You can also save money by eating where the locals eat and avoiding tourist hotspots. This gives you a genuine taste of the local cuisine and culture.
