The Life and Biodiversity Laboratory , announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, will be located at the Museum of the Future and is being developed in partnership with US-based Colossal Biosciences.

Sheikh Hamdan unveiled the initiative on social media during the World Governments Summit 2026, describing it as a permanent hub to showcase scientific innovation and support global efforts to protect species from extinction.

“Our goal is to inspire understanding and awareness, paving the way for a brighter future,” he said.

Visitors will be able to experience immersive recreations of extinct animals, including woolly mammoths, Tasmanian tigers, and dodos, using advanced technology.

A central feature will be the World Preservation Lab and BioVault , which Colossal Biosciences calls “Bringing the Past to the Future.” The BioVault will store genetic material to enable both preservation and potential de-extinction.

Colossal Biosciences has used CRISPR gene-editing technology to develop prototypes of extinct species, including the woolly mammoth and thylacine, and plans to expand these efforts in Dubai.

Forbes reported that the UAE has made a major investment in the project, with Colossal Biosciences describing the BioVault as the first in a global network. CEO Ben Lamm likened it to a modern-day Noah’s Ark.

The Dubai facility will initially preserve DNA from 100 critically endangered species. Over time, it aims to store millions of samples from more than 10,000 species, prioritizing those not already preserved elsewhere.

Lamm called the project a “backup plan for life on Earth,” emphasizing the urgent need for global collaboration in the face of accelerating species loss.

The initiative has drawn backing from high-profile supporters, including Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Paris Hilton, Peter Jackson, and the Hemsworth brothers.

Majed Al Mansoori, executive director of the Museum of the Future, highlighted the project’s focus on fieldwork and DNA research in its first year. He said the lab will lay the groundwork for long-term biodiversity protection.

“The future belongs to those who harness technology to address our greatest challenges,” Al Mansoori said. “We are taking a bold step to advance science that safeguards our planet, restores ecosystems, and builds a sustainable legacy for future generations.”

Why Somalia has severed ties with the UAE

The announcement was made by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a televised address, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

Why did Somalia expel the UAE?

According to Somali officials , the UAE had been using military bases in Bosaso and Berbera, strategically important coastal cities as logistics hubs to support military operations in Sudan’s ongoing conflict. In addition, Mogadishu accuses Abu Dhabi of backing Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, the semi-autonomous northern region seeking independence from Somalia.

“Unfortunately, the UAE failed to respect those ties within the framework of a united, sovereign and independent Somali state. We did not rush this decision. We gave ample time and repeatedly demanded that the UAE respect Somalia’s sovereignty and independence,” Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud explained in a televised address.

He added that the decision followed “extensive and careful consultations” after repeated actions by the UAE that were “unknown to and unwelcome by the Federal Government .”

The Israel-Somaliland link

The fallout comes just weeks after Israel became the first country to officially recognise Somaliland, a move which has been condemned across Africa and the Arab world . Somali authorities believe the UAE played a behind-the-scenes role in facilitating this recognition.

The accolade was presented during the World Conservation Congress held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to the Cuban ambassador, Norberto Carlos Escalona Carrillo.

The award celebrates the excellence of Cuba’s National Biodiversity Programme through 2030, developed under the supervision of Cuba’s Ministry of Science , Technology and Environment (CITMA). Its strategy emphasises science-based measures, citizen participation, and concrete conservation actions.

Cuba was among 26 countries selected worldwide for their outstanding commitment to biodiversity. These nations were honoured for their national biodiversity strategies (EPANB), which align with global goals under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

In Cuba’s case, the EPANB is integrated with the country’s broader environmental and climate policy framework — including the Tarea Vida (Life Task) programme and Cuba’s National Development Plan to 2030 — reflecting a systemic approach to conservation and sustainability.

The awarding body, the International Reverse the Red Coalition, is led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners. It honours countries that craft and implement biodiversity action plans with scientific rigour, transparency, stakeholder inclusion and alignment with global standards.

The framework, announced by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is expected to help integrate next-generation flying vehicles into the country’s transport system.

The move comes as the UAE pushes ahead with advanced air mobility, following recent test flights by U.S.-based firms Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

These trials are part of a wider plan to begin commercial electric air taxi services as early as next year.

Under the new rules, both traditional helicopters and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will be able to use the same landing infrastructure .

Officials say this dual-use approach will help the country scale up its air taxi services more easily.

Speaking about the framework, GCAA director general Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said , “This pioneering regulatory framework does not merely enable new technology; it redefines how aviation evolves.”

The UAE aims to stay ahead in the aviation industry by adopting flexible regulations that support new technologies while maintaining safety standards.

The guidelines also reflect the country’s ambition to become a global leader in sustainable transport.

The initiative , named the “Ghana-UAE Innovations and Technology Hub,” is expected to attract over 11,000 global technology firms to Ghana, including major industry players such as Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, IBM, and Alphabet.

The agreement was signed on Thursday, May 29, in Accra by Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and the Chairman of the UAE’s Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem.

The technology hub will be located in Ningo-Prampram, a district in Ghana’s capital region, and will cover an area of 25 square kilometres. It will serve as a regional centre for artificial intelligence (AI) engineering, business process outsourcing (BPO), knowledge process outsourcing (KPO), and machine learning services, with a focus on Africa’s specific data needs.

According to local sources, the PCFC will fully fund the initial phase of the project in collaboration with leading AI firms involved in Dubai’s AI transformation.

“This hub will create a space where investment meets ingenuity, where the creativity of Ghana's youth is matched with opportunities to try, and where advanced technologies are developed, deployed and exported,” said George.

“We are creating the conditions for a digital renaissance, led by Ghanaians for Ghanaians. Our goal is not to catch up with the digital age but to help shape it,” he added.

PCFC Chairman Bin Sulayem highlighted the role of innovation in economic development, stating, “Today, wealth is not measured by gold or oil but by the ability to generate, implement, and scale ideas.”

This initiative forms part of a major strategic alliance between OpenAI and the UAE government, aimed at enhancing the nation's AI capabilities.

The partnership includes plans for a large-scale AI infrastructure project in Abu Dhabi, termed Stargate UAE. The ambitious project is designed to create a central hub for artificial intelligence in the region. Within this framework, a one-gigawatt AI supercomputing cluster will be established, starting with an initial operational capacity of 200 megawatts expected to come online next year.

OpenAI’s initiative is part of the "OpenAI for Countries" program , intended to assist nations in developing AI systems that reflect local languages and governance. Emphasis is placed on maintaining data privacy and promoting responsible AI use, ensuring such technologies align with national priorities and policies.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has characterised the UAE project as a "bold vision." He argues that it aims to unlock benefits of AI across various sectors, including healthcare, education , and sustainable energy, ultimately fostering advancements that reach broader audiences worldwide.

This partnership also involves several tech giants such as Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, SoftBank, and Microsoft, along with G42, a UAE-based AI company. Collectively, the goal is to shift the UAE into a prominent position within the global AI arena.

With ChatGPT Plus now accessible to all residents at no cost, millions will benefit from advanced tools for diverse tasks like writing, studying, coding, and planning. This is seen as a revolutionary step, granting wider access to sophisticated AI technologies across various demographics in the UAE.

Moreover, the UAE has voluntarily committed to investing in AI domestically, aligning its expenditures with corresponding investments in the United States . A report from Axios notes that their joint financial outlay could surge to approximately $20 billion, evenly partitioned between the two regions.

Even after accounting for the United Arab Emirates’ newly implemented corporate tax, which was applied to a full financial year for the first time, the Group posted an impressive net profit of $5.6 billion. This is an 18% year-on-year increase, fuelled primarily by surging global demand for air travel.

“The Emirates Group has raised the bar to set new records for profit, revenue, and cash assets,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

Over the past year, the company invested $3.8 billion in new aircraft, infrastructure, and technology to support its global expansion strategy. The Group’s workforce grew by 9%, reaching a record 121,223 employees, and a dividend of $1.6 billion was declared to its sole shareholder, the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD).

Emirates Airline, the Group’s flagship carrier, delivered a pre-tax profit of $5.8 billion, representing a 20% increase from the previous year. The airline’s revenue rose by 6% to $34.9 billion, underscoring continued robust passenger and cargo operations.

Meanwhile, Dnata, the Group’s global air services provider, reported a record pre-tax profit of $430 million, up 2% year-on-year, as it expanded its ground handling, catering, and travel services footprint worldwide.

The Group currently has 314 aircraft on order, including 61 Airbus A350s and 205 Boeing 777X jets.

World court opens Sudan-UAE Darfur case hearings

The ongoing hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) underscore the escalating tensions between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sudan's allegations that the UAE has violated the Genocide Convention by allegedly supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) raises significant legal and ethical questions. Sudan's acting justice minister claims that the RSF, backed by UAE resources, is engaged in systematic genocide against the Masalit ethnic group. As Sudan pursues emergency legal measures to curtail UAE support for the RSF, the UAE firmly denies these accusations, labelling them as unsubstantiated. Notably, the ICJ's ability to enforce its rulings remains a point of contention, especially given the UAE's legal reservations regarding the court's jurisdiction under the Genocide Convention. RFI reports that this complex legal situation is further complicated by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, with over 24,000 deaths reported and 14 million individuals displaced since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023.

UAE denies Sudan’s genocide claim at UN court

The UAE has also sought to distance itself from Sudan's claims by asserting that the allegations represent a misuse of judicial processes. The situation is precarious; both nations are bound by the 1948 Genocide Convention, yet the UAE's existing reservations could impede Sudan's attempts to secure a favourable ruling. According to AP , the geopolitical implications of this case are notable, as the United States has sanctioned RSF leaders due to their recognised role in the ongoing genocide. The implications of these sanctions highlight a broader concern regarding international accountability and the efficacy of the Genocide Convention in the face of such conflicts.

EU and UAE agree to launch free trade talks

The UAE has embarked on negotiations with the European Union (EU) to establish a free trade agreement, which reflects an ongoing effort to diversify trade partnerships amid rising U.S. tariffs. The Presidents from both sides highlighted the potential for expanding economic cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing technology. Such agreements not only aim to reduce tariffs and trade barriers but also to bolster economic resilience in a rapidly changing global landscape. US News reports that the UAE's economic relationships are further emphasised by a recent MoU signed with Ireland to enhance economic and technical cooperation, marking a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties with potential benefits across multiple sectors, including food security and healthcare technology.

EDGE, 4iG Space & Defence Technologies strengthen strategic ties in autonomous systems, space domains

Furthermore, the collaboration between EDGE and 4iG Space & Defence Technologies signifies a move towards modernising defence capabilities through the co-development of unmanned aerial systems and space observation technologies. As reported by WAM , the strategic partnership aims to foster innovation in anti-drone systems and UAVs, addressing emerging security challenges globally. Such collaborations exemplify the importance of international cooperation in advancing defence technologies and maintaining security in NATO-aligned regions.

The deal, initially announced in May 2024, gives XRG access to Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin, one of the world’s largest gas discoveries in the past 15 years. The Area 4 concession, being developed by ExxonMobil and Eni, includes several pioneering LNG projects with a combined production potential of more than 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), the Emirates News Agency reports.

Mozambique, which discovered vast gas reserves in the deepwater Rovuma Basin in 2010, began exporting LNG last year. The country has attracted significant foreign investment in its energy sector, despite disruptions caused by militant attacks.

Another stalled LNG project in the country is expected to resume soon, following the Trump administration’s approval of a $4.7 billion loan from the US Export-Import Bank.

Khaled Salmeen, XRG’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal. “We are proud and excited to be part of the responsible development of Mozambique’s world-class Rovuma Basin. Together with the Government of Mozambique and our partners, we look forward to sharing our expertise, adding value, and accelerating these developments towards their full potential LNG capacity,” he said.

XRG’s acquisition in Mozambique marks its first investment in the country, reinforcing its strategy of building a world-scale, integrated gas portfolio to meet growing global energy demand. The company already has LNG assets in Azerbaijan, Egypt, and the United States.

This was revealed in Parliament on March 20, by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.

He was answering a question in the Rajya Sabha about Indian prisoners in foreign countries, including those facing capital punishment.

According to him , there are currently 10,152 Indians in prisons abroad, including those still on trial.

Singh also shared numbers from eight countries where Indians have been given the death penalty but are yet to be executed.

Apart from the UAE, there are 11 such cases in Indonesia, six in Qatar, three in the US, and one each in Yemen and another unnamed country.

The minister said the Indian government is actively helping these prisoners. Officials from Indian embassies visit them in jail and assist them in legal matters including filing appeals and mercy petitions to try and reduce or overturn the sentence.

The government was also asked if any Indians had been executed in foreign countries over the past five years. Singh confirmed that executions had taken place in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Zimbabwe.

Three Indians were executed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in 2024, while one was put to death in Zimbabwe. In 2023, five Indians were executed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and one in Malaysia.

The situation in the UAE remains unclear. The country does not officially share such data with India. However, according to informal sources, no Indians have been executed in the UAE from 2020 to 2024.

The procedure, known as the "Bikini" hip replacement, is designed to be less painful, leave a smaller scar, and help patients recover much faster.

Unlike traditional hip surgeries, this method does not cut through muscle or tendons, which means patients can start moving within a few hours after surgery and return to daily activities much sooner.

The technique gets its name from the small, bikini-line incision made in the front of the hip. It offers several benefits, including less blood loss, reduced swelling, a lower risk of dislocation, and a quicker return to normal life, including driving.

The scar from the procedure is also more hidden compared to other hip surgeries, making it a preferred choice for many patients.

However, it may not be suitable for people who are severely overweight, have a lot of muscle mass, or have complex hip conditions.

In those cases, a traditional approach might still be needed, but robotic assistance can still improve the outcome.

According to the Emirates News Agency , this advanced method was introduced in the UAE by Dr. Ali Al, President of the Emirates Orthopaedic Society and a leading expert in robotic-assisted surgery.

Although the Bikini hip replacement was originally developed by Dr. Ikram Nizam, an orthopaedic surgeon from Australia, and has already been used successfully in Europe, it is the first time it is being introduced in the Middle East.

Doctors say this technique is most helpful for people with severe arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or hip damage from an injury.

These conditions often cause pain and difficulty moving, making hip replacement surgery the best option for many patients.

The project, led by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), will combine solar power with advanced battery technology to deliver clean energy around the clock.

The facility will feature a massive 5.2-gigawatt solar power plant and a 19-gigawatt-hour battery storage system.

It can generate 1 gigawatt of power daily, making it the largest solar and battery storage project in the world.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi described the project as "clean energy on an unprecedented scale."

According to him, it "sets a new global benchmark in addressing renewable energy challenges."

This strategic blueprint aims to integrate AI across diverse sectors, reflecting the UAE's ambition to leverage AI for socio-economic development.

By prioritising AI, the UAE seeks to stimulate innovation and enhance public services, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to technology adoption.

In a landmark move in 2017, the UAE became the first country to appoint a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, a position that emphasises the significance of AI in government policy-making. This role ensures dedicated attention and resources are allocated to developing AI policies and facilitating initiatives that enhance governance and efficiency.

Projects like Smart Dubai, launched under the Dubai Future Foundation, are critical in transforming Dubai into the world's leading smart city, where AI plays an essential role in improving the quality of life.

Research from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates a substantial rise in public interest in AI, driven by enhanced consumer awareness and engagement. Notably, a significant portion of respondents, with 75% indicating experience with AI tools such as ChatGPT, highlights the increasing integration of AI into daily activities.

In the UAE, 91% of consumers are familiar with generative AI technologies, with 34% actively utilising them, demonstrating high levels of technological adoption in the region.

Further boosting its AI capabilities, the UAE has introduced initiatives like the Falcon 2 AI model , aimed at competing with leading entities such as Meta and OpenAI. This demonstrates a robust commitment to advancing AI technologies and integrating AI within various industries, positioning the UAE as a global hub for AI innovation and development.

The mounting interest in generative AI is catalysing enterprise-level AI strategies as organisations undertake to explore numerous use cases enabled by this technology. According to Jyoti Lalchandani, Group Vice President & Regional Managing Director for the Middle East, Turkey & Africa, larger organisations are particularly proactive in adopting AI technologies due to competitive pressures.

The transition towards adopting generative AI has spurred many businesses to reassess their data architecture and initiate data modernisation projects, paving the way for specialised services and capabilities tailored to support these evolving demands.

Budget increase

The UAE cabinet has approved a balanced budget for the 2025 fiscal year, with expenditures set to increase by nearly 12% to 71.5 billion dirhams ($19.47 billion). Revenue is also projected at 71.5 billion dirhams, maintaining the budget's balance. Nearly 40% of the budget will focus on social development, including significant allocations for education and healthcare. Over 35% will support government affairs, with smaller portions for infrastructure and economic sectors. This budget is part of the UAE's multi-year financial plan for 2022-2026, Zawya reports.

Insurance market leader

The MENA region's insurance market reached a turnover of 50.8 billion USD in 2023, a 9.2% increase from 2022. Non-life premiums dominate, making up 81.2% of the total. According to Atlas Magazine , Saudi Arabia leads the market with 17.45 billion USD (34.4% share), followed by the United Arab Emirates at 14.71 billion USD (29% share).

Crypto exempt from VAT

The United Arab Emirates has announced that cryptocurrency transactions will be exempt from value-added tax (VAT) starting 15 November 2024, with retroactive effect from 1 January 2018. This decision, communicated by the Federal Tax Authority, clarifies that digital assets will not incur the standard 5% VAT, aligning their tax treatment with traditional financial services. As reported by The Paypers , the UAE's regulatory framework supports fintech innovation and aims to bolster cybersecurity amid increasing digital transactions. Collaboration among fintech companies, regulators, and financial institutions is essential to address security challenges.

Goodwill campaign for Lebanon

Sheikh Theyab Bin Mohamed has launched a two-week philanthropic campaign in the UAE, running from October 8 to October 21, to support the people of Lebanon, under the slogan "The UAE Stands with Lebanon." This initiative follows President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's order for a $100 million relief aid package and the dispatch of six planes with 205 tonnes of essential supplies. Bernama adds that the campaign aims to engage community members and organizations in providing humanitarian support to Lebanon amid its ongoing crisis.

$100 billion investments

India aims to attract $100 billion in investments from the United Arab Emirates, announced Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Following the 12th India-UAE High-Level Task Force meeting, he highlighted that key sectors like data centres, AI, renewable energy, and transmission infrastructure will see significant funding. Currently, UAE's direct equity investments in India total just under $20 billion, with nearly $3 billion invested in the last fiscal year. Over the past five years, UAE's annual investments in India have tripled, making it the seventh-largest investor in the country, Business Today reports.

Located on Hudayriyat Island, this state-of-the-art facility promises to be a game-changer for surfers of all levels, offering an unparalleled surfing experience in the heart of the Arabian Gulf.

Surf Abu Dhabi is designed to be the ultimate surfing destination, featuring the most advanced wave pool technology developed in collaboration with the Kelly Slater Wave Company.

This partnership ensures that the waves produced are not only the largest but also the most consistent and high-performing, replicating the power and excitement of ocean swells with precision.

In an interview with AFP, the general manager for the facility, Ryan Watkins described it as "the longest man-made barrelling wave on the planet," adding "We've also got the tallest wave in the world, which is what us surfers would call well over head high, but it's, you know, by the ruler, six to nine feet of a barrelling perfect wave."

The facility offers a variety of waves tailored to different skill levels, from gentle rolling waves for beginners to high-performance barrels for advanced surfers. This makes it an ideal spot for both novice surfers looking to learn and seasoned professionals seeking to hone their skills.

"The only difference here is that it's a perfect wave every time. Whereas in the ocean, a lot of variables. We can create whatever ocean wave you want here in the basin. So if you're a beginner and you want perfect two-foot foamies, we got it for you. If you want to get barrelled for 10 seconds, we got it for you. So, while we're not exactly the same as the ocean, we certainly are the closest thing you'll ever get to that," Ryan added.

The highly anticipated Surf Abu Dhabi is set to open to the public in October 2024. As the largest and most advanced wave facility in the world, it is expected to attract surfers from around the globe, making it a must-visit destination for anyone passionate about the sport.

This development follows successful talks and extensive negotiations between the two governments.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the agreement to State House correspondents on Monday after the Federal Executive Council meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

"I can tell you that the agreement has been reached and, effective from today, Nigerian passport holders intending to travel to the UAE are able to do so," the Minister stated. He added that discussions had been ongoing to address the issue of visas for Nigerian passport holders traveling to the UAE.

The new agreement includes updated controls and conditions to facilitate obtaining a UAE visa. The resumption of visa issuance will be effective from July 15, 2024. This marks the end of a nearly two-year visa ban imposed by the UAE due to various diplomatic disputes.

During this period, Dubai’s Emirates Airline also halted flights to Nigeria, citing the Central Bank of Nigeria's inability to remit an estimated $85 million in revenue to the UAE.

The lifting of the visa ban is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and the UAE, opening up travel and business opportunities for Nigerian citizens.

The move is aimed at identifying different sources of noise and the residential areas that are most affected in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The EAD will evaluate the impact on each area based on the information generated and create a map to highlight the worst-affected places.

"Parallel to this initiative, a noise committee has been formed comprising of more than 10 government entities," Eng. Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at EAD was quoted as saying.

The data collected will also help in creating ways to reduce noise levels to address the potential health risks associated. City planners and engineers will be able to use this information to influence future decisions including the design of sound barriers, addition of green spaces and infrastructural changes to reduce noise pollution. Health authorities can also use the data to protect residential areas and schools from loud noises.

Faisal Al Hammadi explained that Abu Dhabi has been "monitoring ambient noise since 2007 through the air quality monitoring network."

But this new project will provide a bigger and more accurate picture of noise pollution in the city in line with the authorities’ commitment to environmental care.

April 2024, according to The European Union’s climate monitoring service Copernicus, remains the hottest month ever recorded globally.

In regions with arid and semi-arid climates, the scarce rainfall leads to a significant lack of moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in dry conditions .

The 2020 World Bank report reveals the world's driest countries, emphasising their significant struggles. Here's a list of the countries with the lowest average annual rainfall:

Egypt

Egypt tops the list with an average annual rainfall of around 18mm, making it the driest country in the world. The vast majority of Egypt’s land is desert, and the Nile River is the primary source of water. The country faces challenges related to the management and allocation of Nile waters, particularly with the construction of dams upstream.

Libya

Libya, a North African country receives an average annual rainfall of about 56mm. The country’s arid climate and limited water resources have been further strained by political instability and conflict. Libya depends on the Great Man-Made River Project , which transports water from underground aquifers in the desert to coastal cities.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia, with an average annual rainfall of around 59 mm, is predominantly desert. The country faces significant challenges in securing water for its population and agriculture. Desalination and the use of treated wastewater for irrigation are critical components of Saudi Arabia’s water strategy.

Qatar

Qatar experiences an average annual rainfall of approximately 74mm. This country is characterised by its desert landscape and high temperatures. To combat water scarcity, Qatar has developed advanced desalination technologies and implemented strict water conservation measures.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The UAE has an average annual rainfall of about 78mm. The country’s rapid urbanisation and population growth have intensified its water scarcity issues. The UAE relies heavily on desalination, and it has also invested in cloud seeding technology to enhance rainfall.

Countries with no income tax in the world

According to the World Bank , it is important to pay taxes as "Taxation not only pays for public goods and services; it is also a key ingredient in the social contract between citizens and the economy."

Despite the "glaring" benefits, as of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Trading Economics reports that three countries and territories offer the advantage of no income tax to their citizens and residents.

Here are three countries with no income tax:

Qatar

In Qatar, the tax system is based on the territorial principle. This means that individuals are subject to taxation in Qatar if they have earned income originating within the country, irrespective of their tax residency status. However, personal income from employment, such as salaries, wages, and various allowances, is not subject to income tax, explains PwC tax summaries.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has no income tax but VAT-registered businesses pay VAT at a standard rate of 15% which was introduced in 2021. "Raising VAT was a painful measure and I hate to hurt any Saudi citizen, but it is my duty to build Saudis a long-term sustainable future," the prince said in an interview aired on Saudi TV to mark the fifth anniversary of Vision 2030. Raising VAT to 15% is a temporary decision that will last one to five years and then it will go down to between 5% to 10%," Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a televised remark in 2021 as reported by Reuters .

United Arab Emirates

In the UAE, individuals, investors, and corporations are exempt from income tax, except for oil companies and foreign bank branches. The country's longstanding free economy model permits the full repatriation of profits without restrictions. The UAE's substantial oil and natural gas reserves provide a significant portion of government revenue, reducing the need to tax personal incomes.

These tax havens attract people with the promise of keeping more of their hard-earned money, but how do these countries manage without the revenue from income taxes?

The secret lies in alternative sources of revenue. For instance, some countries are rich in natural resources like oil and gas, which can be heavily taxed at the corporate level. Others rely on tourism, imposing taxes on goods and services consumed by visitors, or on luxury items and real estate transactions.

This anticipated move comes after extensive discussions and resolutions reached at the highest levels of government .

In a comprehensive 44-minute interview on the State House YouTube channel with Otega Ogra, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, the minister highlighted that an agreement was finalised between President Tinubu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the former's visit to the UAE in September 2023.

Recent developments indicate that the UAE is ready to reopen its doors to Nigerian travellers, fostering improved bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Keyamo emphasised that the official announcement regarding the lifting of the visa ban is on the way and will be made by the UAE government. He expressed confidence that the announcement would restore ease of travel for Nigerian citizens to the UAE.

“After that high-level meeting, Mr. President, credited to him, made things very easy for us all. We did our follow-ups as his ministers. We have done everything. We have resolved everything. Just wait for the announcement from the UAE government, and that announcement is imminent,” he said.

The visa ban lifting is expected to positively impact various sectors, including tourism, business, and cultural exchanges. It will also provide a much-needed boost to individuals and families affected by the travel restrictions.

In 2022, the UAE instituted a visa ban on Nigeria amid various diplomatic disagreements. Additionally, Emirates Airlines, based in Dubai, halted its flights to Nigeria due to the reported inability of Abuja to remit approximately $85 million in revenues to the UAE.

What they said

Presenting his argument and accusation before the UN Security Council, Sudan's representative to the UN, Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed said, "The military aggression launched by the Rapid Support militia, supported with weapons by the Emirates, is deliberately and systematically targeting the villages and cities." UAE's envoy, Mohamed Abushahab, however, counterattacked with "If they seek an end to the conflict and civilian suffering, then why won't they come to the Jeddah talks? Why are they blocking aid? What are you waiting for? You should stop grandstanding in international fora such as this and instead, take responsibility for ending the conflict you started" according to Reuters .

UAE Roundup: Millionaire migrations, visa ban, missing town

Millionaire migrations

The forecast for 2024 suggests that approximately 4,300 millionaires are expected to emigrate from India, with a significant number selecting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as their new home, as per a recent analysis by Henley & Partners, a global advisory firm specializing in investment migration. It's noteworthy that the previous year's report underscored the relocation of at least 5,100 Indian millionaires overseas, as reported by WION . Furthermore, the report positions India as the third-highest country in terms of millionaire migration worldwide, following China and the United Kingdom.

Nigeria visa ban to be lifted

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to relax visa regulations for Nigerian visitors, following nearly two years of a visa embargo. Nigeria's Federal Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has stated that although the UAE initially outlined extra procedures to be fulfilled before rescinding the ban, the Nigerian authorities have now successfully concluded all necessary steps, as reported by Channels Television .

Missing town unearthed

Archaeologists have unearthed settlements on Al Sinniyah Island in the United Arab Emirates that date back to the sixth century. This week, they suggested that these could potentially be the remnants of the long-lost city of Tawam. According to Al-Monitor , referenced in ancient Arabic manuscripts, Tawam is thought to have been a prominent Gulf coast capital during the sixth century, renowned for its pearl fishing and the commerce of premium gems. Nonetheless, the city experienced a downturn after the outbreak of the Plague of Justinian, which afflicted the area during that era.

Sudan and UAE clash over militia support

In a recent allegation, Sudan has charged the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with supplying arms to the Sudanese paramilitary faction, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), amidst the current turmoil engulfing the nation. This claim marks the latest dispute by Khartoum over what it perceives as Abu Dhabi's meddling. At a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, Sudan's UN envoy, Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed, levelled accusations against the UAE for providing weaponry to the RSF and affirmed that the Sudanese government possesses proof of this arms transfer, which it plans to present to the International Criminal Court (ICC), as reported by Middle East Monitor .

Unusual jump in silver imports

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has highlighted a significant surge in silver imports from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), noting an almost 60-fold increase in the last fiscal year. This spike is particularly striking given that the UAE is not known for silver production. The substantial rise in imports could suggest a potential violation of the rules of origin established under the free trade agreement activated between India and the UAE in May 2022. Led by the former trade officer Ajay Srivastava, the GTRI observed that silver imports from the UAE escalated by 5,853 percent, soaring from $29.2 million in FY23 to $1.74 billion in FY24. This increase is attributed to India imposing an 8 percent duty on imports under the UAE trade deal, compared to a 15 percent Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) tariff applied to imports from other nations, reports Indian Express .

According to Microsoft on Wednesday, May 22, this move is part of its efforts to improve and expand cloud computing services in Kenya and East Africa.

Reuters reports that G42 and its partners will build the upcoming data centre in Kenya, powered by geothermal energy. This facility will enable access to Microsoft's Azure via a new cloud region for East Africa.

Ahead of a signing of an intent meeting between Microsoft, G42 and Kenya's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy on Friday, May 24, Brad Smith, Microsoft's president shared that “This shows what G42 and Microsoft have the opportunity to do together that neither one of us could do separately. I frankly think it shows that what the United States and the United Arab Emirates can do together that helps bring technology to new countries, especially across Africa.”

Microsoft added that the data centre is expected to become operational within two years after the signing of definitive agreements.

G42 Chief Executive Officer Peng Xiao also stated that the entire project will require up to one gigawatt of electricity from the grid. Constructing the facility in Olkaria, an area abundant in geothermal resources, provides a significant advantage, as the project is expected to utilise 100 megawatts in the initial phase.

In May 2024, Microsoft announced the closure of its Africa Development Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, which led to job redundancies for some of its employees in the country.

Just over a year after its establishment, the tech giant decided to shut down the Africa Development Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of its initiative to promote high-end engineering and innovation solutions.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the closure on Wednesday, May 8 and attributed it to "organisational and workforce adjustments" inherent in managing the company's business operations.

Terrorist groups

Suspected terrorist groups, including Hezbollah and Houthis, are allegedly channelling funds into Dubai real estate, according to a report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies. The investigation, involving leaked data from the Dubai Land Department, identified over 200 individuals, some under US sanctions, with links to illicit activities who have bought property in Dubai, The Business Standard indicated. The European Union has also flagged the UAE as a "high-risk third country" for money laundering. Additionally, the real estate market in Dubai has seen significant growth, with the number of homes sold for at least $10 million surging by 92% in 2023.

Blue residency

The UAE has introduced a new "Blue Residency" category to honour sustainability experts. This is the first long-term residency for individuals with exceptional contributions to environmental action and sustainability, both within and outside the UAE. The initiative aims to support and maintain the country's efforts in sustainability and is in line with the Year of Sustainability initiative for 2023 and 2024. According to Emirates 24|7 , the residency will be granted to supporters of environmental action, including international organizations, companies, and individuals committed to environmental protection.

UAE - US partnership

A business delegation from the UAE and the U.S. met with President Mnangagwa to discuss investment opportunities in Zimbabwe. They also met with government officials to discuss sports facilities and the Zim Digital Initiative. The delegation plans to meet with various ministers to discuss investment issues. The investors expressed support for the government's efforts to address food shortages and expressed excitement about investing in sports in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwean media The Herald reported. The Second Republic's friendly policies have attracted a large number of investors, leading to the establishment of new companies and the revival of others, creating hundreds of jobs.

UAE supports Egypt

Egypt has received a $14 billion payment from the UAE to develop the coastal city of Ras Al Hekma. The investment is part of a $35 billion deal and is expected to increase foreign direct investment, create jobs, and support Egypt's private sector, The National News reported. The UAE has intensified its investment in Egypt in recent years, acquiring companies and opening an office in Cairo. This investment could help Egypt ease currency pressures and address shortages of foreign currency and high inflation.

New payment card

UAE Banks Federation is rolling out a new payment card called Jaywan to replace existing debit cards and reduce expenses for businesses. Developed in partnership with India’s RuPay, the card aims to improve travel and cross-border transactions for Indian expats in the UAE. According to news agency Siasat , the initiative also aims to boost trade between India and the UAE through digital transactions and financial inclusivity.

Sudanese Sovereign Council member and Army Assistant Commander-in-Chief Yasir Al-Atta on Sunday cited a recent report by a UN team of experts revealing the supply of military equipment by the UAE to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) through Chad and Libya since last summer.

The report also indicated the participation of foreign fighters which empowered paramilitary forces and enabled them to seize control over most of Darfur’s states.

“We will begin by filing a complaint with regional organizations until we reach the UN Security Council. I add my voice to the citizens and demand that the Commander-in-Chief file an official complaint against the Emirates,” Al-Atta said during a tour in Omdurman, a major city in Sudan, reports Sudan Tribune .

Al-Atta had previously criticised the UAE’s involvement in the Sudanese conflict publicly, triggering diplomatic tensions between both countries in November 2023.

“Unfortunately, the report confirmed the involvement of South Sudan in supporting the rebellion by opening the supply of fuel and food to the rebellion, as well as the participation of large groups of mercenaries from Chad, Ethiopia, Syria, Libya’s Haftar, Central African Republic, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso,” he was quoted in a previous statement.

According to Al-Atta, the rebellion began the war with 120,000 fighters and recruited an additional 49,000 fighters, and 7,000 fighters from these countries every week.

“Despite this overwhelming force, we will prevail. We will organize the resistance and support it with experienced fighters to safeguard the lives and property of our citizens,” he added.

On December 7, Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, experienced two major disasters simultaneously. Following several days of heavy rainfall, the northern region of the main island of Mahe encountered rockslides, landslides, and flooding, resulting in three fatalities , Seychelles News Agency reported.

"430 houses have been visited and there are possibly more. The number of residents we estimate have been affected is around 1,400 and 43 houses are severely damaged, 118 less severe, and 269 needed minor repair. There is an expert already in the country working closely with the police. We are also looking for people who will be able to make the analysis afterwards," Ramkalawan told reporters.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the United Arab Emirates visited the country to assess the ruins and hold strategic discussions on how to help Seychelles recover from the incident.

"Following discussions, the delegation guided by President Ramkalawan, visited some of the affected sites around the island and one of the shelters currently hosting some of the citizens who have been temporarily relocated," said the government.

Ramkalawan also mentioned that Seychelles has received assistance from two friendly nations – Mauritius, which donated $50,000, and Rwanda, which contributed $300,000. Additionally, the United Kingdom has assisted in the investigation of the explosion.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) witnessed unprecedented protests during the ongoing COP 28 on the sidelines of the United Nations conference on climate change in Dubai.

The UAE authorities allowed select activists to conduct a demonstration, addressing strict conditions.

The protest, deemed a "rare scene" by the Associated Press, covered various issues, including the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and environmental crises.

The activists from international organizations, previously banned from entering the country, to voice their concerns in Dubai.

Sunday's demonstration, focusing on the Israel-Hamas conflict, marked the largest such event in the UAE, according to reports.

Human Rights Watch's Joey Shea acknowledged the limited allowance for protests during the 28th Cup but cautioned against misconceptions about the country's human rights stance.

While recognizing the UAE's effort to project a positive international image through limited protests, Shea emphasized that reality contradicts the image.

“It ends up portraying a very false image that the UAE respects human rights when in fact it doesn't."

The UAE, comprised of seven emirates under the rule of Abu Dhabi, prohibits political parties and labor unions. The ruler of each emirate holds concentrated power, determined through a hereditary process.

The country restricts freedom of expression, with most local media either government-owned or affiliated. Laws also criminalize protests by foreign workers.

The majority of the UAE's population, consisting of 9.2 million people, comprises immigrants, with only 10% being Emiratis.

Many expatriates, often low-wage workers, contribute to their home countries by sending remittances.

Despite these challenges, the UN and the UAE agreed to uphold the right to freedom of expression during the 28th Cup summit.

This alarming revelation will be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

The practice of flaring, or burning waste gas during oil drilling, is widespread among petrochemical companies in the Persian Gulf region, contributing to the deterioration of air quality across the area.

New research indicates that toxic gases, spreading for hundreds of kilometers, have led to a significant decline in air quality throughout the region.

Despite the UAE implementing a ban on gas flaring two decades ago, recent images reveal that the practice persists, raising concerns about health hazards. The UAE, a major oil supplier to the British market, is under scrutiny for the continuation of this environmentally harmful activity.

Iran, ranking third globally in gas flaring after Russia and Iraq, has made promises to phase out flare torches, yet these commitments remain unfulfilled. Even oil companies such as BP and Shell, operating in fields where flaring occurs, have acknowledged efforts to reduce the practice.

Leaked documents published by the BBC on Monday suggest that the UAE may exploit its role as the host of the UN climate change conference to secure new oil and gas deals.

Robert Boyd, the UN special rapporteur on human rights and the environment, expressed deep concern over the findings, highlighting that major companies and oil-producing countries in the Middle East are neglecting their responsibility to address air pollution caused by fossil fuels.

The pollutants resulting from flaring, including PM2.5, ozone, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and benzoalphapyrene (BaP), have been linked by international experts, including the World Health Organization, to serious health issues such as stroke, cancer, asthma, and heart disease when exposure occurs in high volume or over an extended period.

Moreover, flaring remains a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, releasing carbon dioxide and methane, and exacerbating global warming.

The urgency of addressing this environmental crisis underscores the need for comprehensive and immediate action at the international level.
