The resolution, led by Ghana, was approved with 123 votes in favour, 52 abstentions, and three votes against from the United States, Israel, and Argentina.

The resolution urges Member States to consider formal apologies and to contribute to a reparations fund, although it does not specify a monetary value. It also calls for the return of cultural artefacts taken during the colonial period to their countries of origin.

Speaking on behalf of the African Group, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama said, “Today, we come together in solemn solidarity to affirm truth and pursue a route to healing and reparative justice.” He described the resolution as a “safeguard against forgetting” and a response to what he called the “erasure of Black history ” by some modern political administrations.

The resolution states that for more than 400 years, millions of Africans were “stolen, shackled, and shipped” under harsh conditions. It describes the trade as a “definitive break in world history” with long-term effects on global labour and economic systems. Estimates indicate that between 12 and 15 million people were captured between 1500 and 1800, with over two million dying during the transatlantic journey.

President of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock said the trade was a form of “mass resource extraction” that weakened African societies. She added, “The slave trade and slavery stand among the gravest violations of human rights in human history – an affront to the very principles enshrined in the Charter of our United Nations.”

The resolution faced opposition from the United States. Ambassador Dan Negrea described the text as “highly problematic in countless respects” and said the UN should focus on international security rather than “niche” issues. He stated that the U.S. “does not recognise a legal right to reparations for historical wrongs that were not illegal under international law at the time they occurred”.

Several countries, including the United Kingdom and some European Union members, abstained from the vote. The UK has maintained that present-day institutions should not be held responsible for actions taken in the past.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said reparations efforts are not limited to financial payments. He explained that African leaders are seeking support for education and skills development, stating, “Many generations continue to suffer the exclusion, the racism because of the transatlantic slave trade, which has left millions separated from the continent and impoverished.”

Esther Philips, First Poet Laureate of Barbados, addressed delegates during the session. She said, “There are spirits of the victims of slavery present in this room at this moment, and they are listening for one word only: justice .” She added, “For them and for the world, there can be no peace without justice – reparatory justice – and that call is answered only when words are turned into action”.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on countries to take stronger steps to address the long-term effects of slavery. He urged “far bolder actions”, including recognising African ownership of natural resources and ensuring equal representation in global financial and security institutions.

Tinubu said on Sunday that Nigeria had secured French collaboration on “equipment and support” after what he described as a lengthy discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. He spoke during a meeting with state governors at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos after returning from a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, The Punch reports.

“I can report to you… at a lengthy discussion with Emmanuel Macron, their collaboration with us for equipment and support,” Tinubu said. “I’m making frantic efforts to contact other nations. If we have to spend our goodwill and line of credit, we have those who are willing to support us with equipment and training.”

The president described insecurity as a major challenge facing his government , saying it threatens development and prosperity. He told the governors that equipment acquisition was also one of the key issues raised during his UK trip.

Tinubu also warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could worsen inflation and hit Nigerians’ purchasing power through higher fuel and transport costs, which often feed into food prices.

The push for external support comes as Nigeria battles multiple security threats, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and North-Central regions, separatist tensions in the South-East and widespread kidnapping.

It also follows recent bombings in Maiduguri , after which Tinubu ordered security chiefs to relocate to the city and approved additional equipment and operational support to boost counterterrorism efforts.

It is a question that has animated kitchens, street corners and social media feeds across West Africa for years. Now, improbably, it has reached the chandeliers of Windsor Castle — with King Charles III offering a characteristically diplomatic answer.

The occasion was a state banquet held in honour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking the first visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in nearly four decades. Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were received with full ceremony on March 17, complete with a guard of honour — a fitting welcome for the head of Africa’s most populous nation.

That evening, around 160 guests gathered in St. George’s Hall, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. The long tables were set with elaborate displays from the Royal Collection.

Opening his speech with the greeting “Ramadan Mubarak,” the King nodded to Nigeria’s religious diversity before recalling his 2018 visit to the country. He then turned, lightly, to a subject that is anything but trivial in West African circles: jollof rice.

“I was delighted to host a rather lively group for a ‘Jollof and Tea’ party,” he said, referring to a recent reception at St. James’s Palace. “I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best: Nigerian, of course… or perhaps Ghanaian or Senegalese.”

“Diplomatically, I cannot remember,” the King quipped, drawing laughter.

For decades, the so-called “jollof wars” have pitted countries against one another in a spirited contest over whose recipe reigns supreme.

For decades, the so-called “ jollof wars ” have pitted countries against one another in a spirited contest over whose recipe reigns supreme.

Nigerians champion a smoky, party-style version; Ghanaians argue for a richer flavour; Senegal, widely considered the dish’s originator, traces it to thieboudienne.

What may seem like a playful rivalry has also helped push West African cuisine into the global spotlight. Social media has amplified the debate, turning it into a wider conversation that travels well beyond the region.

Research suggests that the rivalry does more than entertain. The study describes the “jollof war” as an “occasionally fierce online debate” that has spread widely on social media, particularly between Nigerians and Ghanaians.

Far from being purely divisive, it argues that these exchanges are “harnessing West African culinary soft power” — effectively turning everyday arguments about food into a form of cultural promotion.

As for the King, his answer was carefully balanced. In the jollof debate, even a monarch appears to know better than to take sides.

Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to stay at Windsor Castle from March 18 to 19, where he is expected to hold private talks with the King and attend a state banquet in honour of the Nigerian delegation.

The trip also includes a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, expected to culminate in the signing of memoranda of understanding and agreements covering trade, investment, defence, immigration and cultural cooperation, the presidency noted in a statement.

A key commercial highlight is Tinubu witnessing the signing of a £746 million financing deal between UK Export Finance (UKEF) and Nigeria’s Ports Authority (NPA) and the Federal Ministry of Finance. The agreement is aimed at supporting the refurbishment of two major maritime facilities, the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.

During the visit, the royal household is expected to show Tinubu a special exhibition of Nigeria-related items from the Royal Collection. Tinubu is also expected to attend the Nigerian Modernism exhibition and meet Nigerian and British business leaders, as well as members of the diaspora.

Members of Tinubu’s entourage include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, and several ministers, including Wale Edun (Finance), Jumoke Oduwole (Trade and Investment), and Bosun Tijani (Communications and Digital Economy).

Documents from Sparta Promotions, the company associated with Joshua, show his listed location has changed from the United Kingdom to the UAE, a move that shines a light on why Dubai and the wider Emirates have become a popular base for high-earning athletes.

In the UK, residents are typically taxed on income such as dividends paid through their businesses. The Daily Mail reported that Joshua received £10.1 million in dividends in 2024, up from £6.3 million the year before. It also reported that Sparta Promotions posted £20.396 million in earnings in 2024 and paid about £6.65 million in UK taxes.

By contrast, Dubai is widely seen as attractive to wealthy individuals because the UAE does not levy personal income tax, making it a draw for internationally mobile stars whose earnings often include sponsorship and endorsement deals alongside sporting income.

Joshua has also expanded his property footprint in the region. Reports in December said he bought a high-end home in Sultan Haitham City near Muscat, Oman, including a large penthouse.

Joshua confirmed the move in the same week that former England footballer Rio Ferdinand and his wife spoke publicly about life in Dubai during heightened regional tensions.

Eight descendants have written to the two institutions urging them to set up a joint taskforce of experts from Zimbabwe and the UK to examine disputed remains and archival records, and offered to provide DNA samples to help verify identities.

In their letters, they said the issue is about accountability as much as history, “This is not only about the past…until the remains of our ancestors are accounted for and returned, the suffering continues,” the Guardian quotes.

The families say they were dismayed after the museum and Cambridge said in 2022 they had not identified any remains in their collections as belonging to the resistance fighters, an answer the descendants and some Zimbabwean officials say is hard to accept without deeper research.

Among those seeking answers is Chief Makoni, Cogen Simbayi Gwasira, a descendant of Chief Chingaira Makoni, who fought British settler forces and was later captured, executed and beheaded. “We are very aggrieved…for the dehumanisation that took place,” he said, adding that British institutions “should be honest and return those things that they took.”

The renewed push comes as wider scrutiny grows over the scale of human remains from Africa held in UK institutions. A Guardian investigation found at least 11,856 items of human remains from Africa across UK universities, museums and councils, with Cambridge and the Natural History Museum among the largest holders.

Starmer’s China visit gains overwhelming support — CGTN poll

The survey , conducted across CGTN’s English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, found that 85.2% of participants view frequent foreign visits to China as evidence of global consensus on equal and orderly multipolarity, as well as inclusive and beneficial globalization.

Meanwhile, 64.8% believe that Starmer’s trip, the first by a British prime minister to China in eight years, is widely seen as a move to provide greater certainty in Britain’s foreign relations.

According to the poll, 85.8 percent of participants believe China’s market presents significant opportunities for British businesses. Bilateral trade in goods between China and the UK reached $103.7 billion in 2025.

Respondents also emphasized the importance of a stable bilateral relationship, with 83% saying cooperation should be guided by mutual respect, equality and shared benefit.

On resolving differences, 68.2% of respondents said disputes could be addressed through rational dialogue grounded in respect and practical cooperation. More than half of respondents, 56.9 percent, said China and the UK should uphold the post-war international order and the multilateral trading system.

Meanwhile, 67.4 percent expected both countries to demonstrate responsibility as major powers and collaborate within multilateral frameworks to tackle global governance challenges.

What went down in Beijing

Starmer’s visit follows a string of high-level foreign trips to China, including by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European leaders, and India’s Narendra Modi, amid growing tensions with the United States under the second Trump administration.

On the trade front, Starmer secured 30-day visa-free access for Britons traveling to China and lower tariffs on whisky. British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca also announced a $15 billion investment in the country.

However, no significant progress was reported on sensitive issues such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, or China-Russia ties. Some critics in Britain and the U.S. voiced concerns over human rights and espionage, which Beijing denies.

Despite these limitations, the CGTN poll indicates strong public confidence in the benefits of Starmer’s visit, particularly in promoting stability, dialogue, and economic opportunities in China-UK relations. It drew on responses from 9,086 overseas netizens within 24 hours.

Last year, while retracing the footsteps of history as a journalist, I found myself immersed in stories that felt like echoes from a different era, yet remain profoundly relevant today. I spoke with the descendants of the Lisbon Maru survivors, whose lives were saved by Chinese fishermen; I stood moved by the legacy of George Hogg, the Oxford graduate who dedicated his life to Chinese orphans during the darkest hours of World War II; and I reflected on Eric Liddell, the Scottish Olympic hero who chose to remain in China for relief work, eventually passing away in a Japanese internment camp.

These are not just footnotes; they are the " living sinews" of a relationship built on shared sacrifice. From the forgotten Chinese mariners of Liverpool to the intergenerational gratitude of British families, these stories remind us that even in an age of geopolitical turbulence, the bond between our peoples has always been defined by mutual support.

Today, we find ourselves in an Age of Strategic Fragmentation. As the United States increasingly pivots toward "willful unilateralism" and protectionist isolation, the global order is being pulled apart. In this volatile landscape, the rationale for a pragmatic, deep-seated partnership between the UK and China has never been more compelling.

The economic synergy

From a trade perspective, our two nations are not competitors, but essential components of a single, sophisticated ecosystem. My six years in the UK have shown me a perfect complementary curve: the UK’s leadership in high-end services , green finance, and life sciences finds its most natural outlet in China’s massive consumer market and rapid industrial application.

Take the current shift in British infrastructure . As the UK moves toward the renationalization of its railways, there is a golden opportunity for pragmatic cooperation. China’s high-speed rail expertise - unmatched in scale and cost-efficiency - can provide the UK with the technological blueprint for a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable public transport system. This isn't just about tracks and trains; it’s about meeting net-zero targets through proven, accessible technology. In fields like robotics, British "brains" (AI and sensor research) coupled with Chinese "limbs" (advanced manufacturing) are already creating tools that will define the next industrial revolution.

A two-way street

Beyond the boardrooms, the heartbeat of our relationship is found in cultural resonance. In China, "Britishness"—from the craftsmanship of a Brompton bicycle to the heritage of Holland & Barrett—is synonymous with quality and trust.

Conversely, in the UK, I have seen a remarkable surge in "China-curiosity." Mandarin has become one of the most sought-after languages in British schools, and the celebration of the Chinese New Year is no longer confined to Chinatowns; it has become a fixture of the British festive calendar, from London’s Trafalgar Square to the streets of Manchester. This grassroots enthusiasm for each other's culture acts as a powerful buffer against political friction, reminding us that our societies are more integrated than the headlines suggest.

A shared responsibility

Politically, both London and Beijing have a vested interest in maintaining a stable, multilateral world order. In an era where international norms are being challenged by "America First" impulses, the UK and China can act as anchors of rationality. Whether it is upholding the Paris Agreement or safeguarding global supply chains, our cooperation is a prerequisite for global stability.

The "special relationship" with Washington need not come at the expense of a "pragmatic relationship" with Beijing. In fact, a Britain that engages deeply with China is a Britain that carries more weight on the world stage.

We owe it to the memory of George Hogg, Eric Liddell, and the survivors of the Lisbon Maru to ensure that the bridge they built is not dismantled by the political whims and point-scoring of the present. As the world fragments, the UK and China have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to prove that cooperation is not a relic of the past, but the only viable path to a sustainable future.

The article solely represents the views of Yubin Du, a journalist for Chinese broadcaster CGTN who was based in London between 2019 and 2025

The action concerns a dispute over the implementation of the Migration and Economic Development Partnership (MEDP), a bilateral treaty between the two governments.

The MEDP includes a dispute-resolution clause that allows for arbitration. According to Rwanda, the dispute relates to the UK’s non-compliance with specific commitments under the treaty.

In June 2024, the UK and Rwanda exchanged diplomatic notes agreeing to two financial contributions of £50 million each, scheduled for April 2025 and April 2026. These payments were intended to support refugee hosting and economic integration in Rwanda. Rwanda asserts that the UK has failed to make these payments.

The agreement also included arrangements for the UK to resettle some of the most vulnerable refugees hosted in Rwanda. However, these arrangements were never finalised.

Following the January 2024 election, the new UK government announced that the partnership would be discontinued.

Rwanda argues that these announcements were made before the treaty's formal termination procedures were followed and that all obligations incurred while the treaty was active remain valid under international law.

Rwanda says it first attempted to resolve the issue through diplomatic engagement. When no agreement was reached, it proceeded to initiate arbitration, as provided by the treaty.

The UK had originally proposed the MEDP as part of its strategy to manage irregular migration. The plan was consistent with Rwanda’s refugee policies and aligned with its cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Michael Butera, Chief Technical Advisor to Rwanda’s Minister of Justice, said: “Rwanda attempted at first to clarify positions and explore possible paths forward, indicating openness to discussion, including on the orderly conclusion of the partnership, provided that any arrangements were mutually agreed and legally consistent.”

“As these discussions did not result in a shared understanding, we exercised the dispute-resolution option expressly provided in the treaty,” he told the New Times .

Regarding the expected outcome, Butera said: “Through arbitration, Rwanda seeks a legal determination of the parties’ respective rights and obligations under the treaty, in accordance with international law.”

He affirmed that Rwanda remains committed to collaboration on migration, refugee protection and development, based on “respect for the rule of law, reciprocity between partners, and the orderly resolution of disputes through agreed legal frameworks.”

The MEDP was originally announced by the UK Government on April 14, 2022, under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as a partnership with the Rwandan Government to process and resettle asylum seekers arriving in the UK without authorisation to the East African nation. The initiative aimed to curb illegal entry, especially via small boats across the English Channel.

It was subsequently renamed the UK-Rwanda Asylum Partnership. Through this agreement, individuals seeking asylum in the UK would be relocated to Rwanda before their asylum applications were considered.

However, in November 2023, the UK Supreme Court ruled the policy unlawful due to safety concerns in Rwanda. Following a change in government, the plan was officially cancelled in July 2024, after the passage of the Safety of Rwanda Act in April 2024.

The boy who took his parents to court for sending him to Ghana told to stay by UK court

The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, November 4, follows a legal dispute brought by the teenager, who alleged that his parents “tricked” him into travelling to Ghana under the pretext of visiting a sick relative.

Instead, he was enrolled in a boarding school in the country after being sent there in March 2024.

The court decided that the boy, whose identity has been withheld, must remain in Ghana until he completes the equivalent of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE).

According to court documents, the boy’s parents decided to relocate him as a “protective measure” due to concerns about his behaviour in London. These concerns included repeated school absences, unexplained cash, and possession of a knife. The teenager denies involvement in any criminal activity or gang affiliation.

The case came to light after the boy contacted the British High Commission in Accra and the UK-based charity Children and Family Across Borders. The charity facilitated his connection with the International Family Law Group, which represented him in court. He described himself as “scared and desperate” and expressed a strong desire to return to the UK.

In February 2025, the court sided with the parents, citing the risks of returning to the UK. However, in June, the Court of Appeal granted the boy’s request for the case to be reconsidered. The latest judgement upheld the original decision, determining that his return would further disrupt his education and family stability.

“I am acutely aware that the conclusion I have reached does not accord with [his] wishes and how that will feel for him... [He] has the talent, ability and intelligence to make this work together with his family. It will be difficult, but they all have the common aim for [him] to return to live with his family," said Judge Mrs Justice Theis.

Now nearly 15, the boy remains enrolled in a school in Ghana and is working toward completing his GCSEs.

He describes his experience in Ghana as distressing, stating he was “living in hell” and “desperate” to return to the UK. He reported feelings of social isolation, noting he does not speak Twi, has difficulty making friends, and suffers from social anxiety.

The boy's mother has said that she would be unable to care for him in the UK at this stage. “It is really hard to be away from him... I feared and continue to fear that if he were to come back now, he could end up dead. I know he does not see it like that…” she said.

James Netto, the boy’s solicitor from The International Family Law Group, told Global South World shortly after the boy had won his appeal in June, that the case hinged on the fact that he had been misled about the purpose of his travel and “his very strong wishes to return to his home, which is in London.”

Following the new ruling, Netto stated that the boy’s “position remains unchanged: he wants to return home.”

Will Prince William’s promise of change reach the Global South?

Britain once ruled nearly 40% of countries that now make up the Global South. While interpretations of colonial history vary, many former colonies remain among the world ’s least developed, including Myanmar, Sudan, Bangladesh and Sierra Leone.

In his interview for Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller, the Prince of Wales said he would question traditions to keep the monarchy “fit for purpose.”

“Change is on my agenda,” he said, calling it a source of “excitement” rather than fear.

His comments come as debate grows within the Commonwealth, the 56-member association of mostly former British colonies. Fourteen countries still recognise the British monarch as their head of state, among them Jamaica, Australia , Canada and Papua New Guinea.

Several governments have begun considering constitutional change. Antigua and Barbuda has pledged a referendum on becoming a republic, while leaders in Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have voiced similar intentions.

The 2021 decision by Barbados to remove the British monarch as head of state added momentum to republican sentiment across the Caribbean . Officials in Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia have since indicated plans to review their own systems.

King Charles III has said that such decisions rest solely with each member country, describing them as “purely a matter for its people .” Buckingham Palace has made clear it will not oppose moves towards independence.

For countries still part of the Commonwealth realm, Prince William’s call for change has therefore taken on wider meaning. It comes at a moment when many are weighing whether to maintain their formal ties to the British crown.

Whether his words signal a more modern and flexible monarchy — or accelerate a shift away from it — remains to be seen.

Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, was found guilty on Monday after a seven-year investigation that spanned several countries.

Metropolitan Police seized more than 61,000 bitcoin from her, concluding a probe that began when she fled China for Britain on falsified documents.

Prosecutors said Qian masterminded a vast investment scam between 2014 and 2017 that defrauded more than 128,000 people in China. She converted much of the money into bitcoin and sought to launder the funds through luxury property purchases in the UK.

Qian first made a blip on authorities’ radar in 2018 following a tip about suspicious cryptocurrency transfers. She was arrested after five years on the run.

"Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are increasingly being used by organised criminals to disguise and transfer assets, so that fraudsters may enjoy the benefits of their criminal conduct," said Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Robin Weyell.

"This case, involving the largest cryptocurrency seizure in the UK, illustrates the scale of criminal proceeds available to those fraudsters."

Her accomplice, Jian Wen, was sentenced earlier this year to six years and eight months for money laundering.

Wen moved from a flat above a restaurant to a multimillion-pound rented home in north London during the scheme. Police also seized bitcoin worth $400 million from her.

Qian’s conviction comes amid growing concern over large-scale scams across Asia.

The United Nations has warned that countries such as Thailand are emerging as hubs for transnational fraud, with some groups using artificial intelligence to target victims.

Netanyahu, during a televised address on September 21, said, “There will be no Palestinian state west of the Jordan.”

“For years, I have prevented the establishment of this terrorist state in the face of enormous pressure both from home and abroad. We did it with determination, and we did it with political wisdom. Indeed, we doubled Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria – and we will continue on this path,” he added.

The recognition comes amid mounting domestic and international pressure, as Israel's military campaign in Gaza intensifies.

The growing group of countries formally recognising Palestine as a state includes Canada and Australia .

French President Emmanuel Macron, who also announced yesterday, along with UK’s Keir Starmer, that Palestine would be formally recognised as a state at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York today, said, “This recognition is the beginning of a journey.”

“A path for peace , to save lives and to try together to live up to the human dignity we owe each other," he added.

However, Japan announced it will not recognise Palestinian statehood at the UNGA, Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya announced on Friday, September 19.

First parliamentary polls since Assad’s fall set for September

For the first time since the collapse of Bashar al‑Assad’s 14-year regime in December 2024, Syria will hold parliamentary elections from September 15 to 20. Voting will take place under an interim constitution to fill 150 assembly seats. Of these, 100 will be elected by provincial electoral colleges, while the remaining 50 will be appointed by interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa. The elections mark a crucial step in reestablishing a permanent government in Syria, which is still reeling from a 14-year civil war and the Assad family’s 53-year rule.

41% US tariff bad for rebuilding Syria — analysts

Despite limited trade ties with Washington, a rebuilding Syria is still expected to feel the pinch of the steep 41% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump, analysts said . Just over six months since the fall of the Assad government and the establishment of a transitional administration, Syria is seeking foreign direct investment — an option undermined by the new US tariff. Syria runs a trade deficit with the US: It exported $11.3 million worth of goods to Washington in 2023, while importing only $1.29 million in American products.

New Senate bill aims to keep US forces in Syria

A draft US Senate measure would bar further reductions to American troop levels in Syria without Pentagon certification that mission goals against ISIS remain intact. The provision follows White House-backed plans to consolidate forces at a single base in Hasakah. It comes amid stalled efforts to integrate Kurdish-led SDF forces into Syria’s national army and renewed clashes near the Tishreen Dam. The Senate is expected to vote on the $853 billion defence bill after its September recess.

Deepening Syria-UK ties post-Assad discussed in talks

British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on August 5, as London continued to step up its engagement with Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. According to state-run SANA, the two discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties and promote regional stability. In July, the UK announced the restoration of diplomatic ties with Syria after a 14-year break.

ISIS claims 3 new attacks on Syrian Democratic Forces

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for three separate attacks targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) across Deir Ezzor. The August 5 attacks in both the eastern and western countryside of Deir Ezzor left two fighters dead and four others injured. One of the attacks struck a diesel tanker, but casualties from that incident remain unconfirmed. SDF is a Kurdish-led military alliance that played a key role in the US-backed campaign to drive ISIS out of northeastern Syria.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) admitted that a serving member of the UK Special Forces mistakenly sent a classified list of names and contact details to the wrong people.

The email included information about 18,714 Afghan nationals and their family members, many of whom had supported UK military and intelligence missions during the war in Afghanistan.

Some of the people named in the leak have since been killed, tortured or attacked in Afghanistan, according to reports , while others continue to live in fear.

The leaked data, which also included details of their UK sponsors such as MI6 officers and a Royal Marine Major General, was later published online by a rejected applicant.

For almost three years, the MoD kept the breach secret using a court order, but the information was finally made public this week.

The MoD has now begun contacting those affected.

Most of the Afghans on the list would not have qualified for UK relocation under the original Afghan Relocation and Assistance Programme (ARAP), but because their details were leaked, they now have a valid case for protection under British law , leading to one of the UK’s biggest emergency relocation efforts.

Many were flown into Britain under Operation Rubific and housed in temporary accommodation, including Ministry of Defence housing and hotels.

The UK has already spent an estimated £400 million on the relocation, including £100 million in compensation, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.

But government insiders estimate the lifetime cost of supporting the 20,000 Afghans and their families could rise to £7 billion, especially if victims decide to sue the government for exposing them to danger.

Despite growing pressure, Defence Secretary Healey said the Afghans were already included in regular migration figures and offered a public apology for the blunder.

The report, published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), evaluated 31 countries on their financial systems’ ability to allocate resources and manage risks on a global scale. The United States, United Kingdom, and Japan retained the top three spots, China Daily reports.

“For segmented indicators, China’s financial technology competitiveness has ranked third for two straight years, and this year’s score is significantly higher than last year, driven by notable development potential of China’s fintech industry,” said Liu Dongmin, senior research fellow at the CASS Institute of World Economics and Politics.

The study highlighted rapid advances in China’s fintech sector. The country’s fintech development potential index jumped from 35.12 in 2024 to 57.25 this year, propelling China’s ranking in this metric from 12th place to fourth globally. Notably, China’s AI talent index also climbed from eighth to fourth place.

Li Dongrong, former deputy governor of the People ’s Bank of China, underscored China’s leading role in shaping the global digital economy. “China’s development of digital finance technology, especially mobile payment technology, is globally leading. Leveraging on the growth of digital technology, China’s financial services have effectively covered areas that were previously difficult to reach, and the country has made effective breakthroughs in inclusive finance,” he said.

Data from ChinaIRN showed the global digital finance market reached $4.5 trillion last year, with China alone accounting for $3.2 trillion, consolidating its status as a major engine of global growth.

Rayner, who is also Secretary of State for Housing, while speaking at the Local Government Association annual conference in Liverpool on Thursday, referred to the late Portuguese forward as a "legend".

Jota, 28 and his brother André Silva, 25, tragically lost their lives in a car crash in northwestern Spain early Thursday morning. Their Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire after suffering a burst tire while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

According to police, the vehicle flipped over and came to a stop in the central reservation. The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. GMT) in the Zamora province.

The news has led to an outpouring of tributes from the global football fraternity. In Liverpool, heartbroken supporters gathered outside Anfield, laying flowers to honour a player who had recently married his longtime girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, just days ago, after winning the Premier League with his team just weeks earlier.

Official data revealed a 50% increase compared to last year, with 879 migrants arriving on a single day, pushing the total to 19,982. Starmer has pledged to crack down on people smuggling gangs and reduce dangerous Channel crossings, a pressing concern for voters.

The government claims to have returned over 24,000 people without legal rights to stay since last July, but better weather and new tactics have increased crossings, and 73 people died attempting the journey in 2024.

The unidentified parents tricked him into visiting an ill relative in Ghana in March 2024, and he ended up in a boarding school, according to court records. The case was heard in the London High Court after the “scared and desperate” boy emailed the British High Commission in Accra and contacted the charity Children and Family Across Borders, who put him in touch with lawyers at the International Family Law Group.

His dispute was that he was deceived, and if he had known he was being sent to boarding school in Ghana, "there would have been no way I would have agreed to it," he wrote to the court. The boy, who had lived in the UK since birth, added that he was "mocked" and "never settled in" at the school in Ghana, and he just wants to go back home.

The High Court in London ruled in favour of the parents who argued that they feared for their son’s safety in London and the relocation wasn’t a form of punishment.

The court ruled in favour of the parents in February 2025, and in June, the boy won a Court of Appeal bid for the case to be reheard.

Global South World spoke with the boy’s solicitor, James Netto of The International Family Law Group, about the extent of the rights of children under the full custody of their parents.

“What we were arguing is that… the older a child becomes and grows into a young person, into teenage years, into their adolescence and adulthood, the parental control, the parental rights over that young person, is diluted ever so often. And there's lots of case law that we have about young persons, if they understand what's going on, they can consent themselves to say medical treatment or issues concerning their religion or schooling or health care or housing,” he told Ismail Akwei in an interview.

James Netto added that the real conflict in this case is the parents admitting to deceiving the boy to move to Ghana as a form of protection, which “was the issue that the judge struggled with.”

“It was a huge shock to the parents. I think the court and all the lawyers in the room have a tremendous amount of sympathy for them, but they also have a tremendous amount of sympathy for him as well. I don't envy the judge who had to make the decision at the first time round because it is such a finely balanced polemic issue,” he said.

“It came down to his strongly held wishes and feelings, the fact that his parents had deceived him into travelling as well. That was a very big factor, both for the first judge and also for the Court of Appeal. And also it was his very strong wishes to return to his home, which is in London. It's impossible to say what the court would have done in other circumstances, but it's not a UK versus Ghana case,” he said.

According to James Netto in an email shortly after the interview, they expect the date of the final hearing to be fixed on June 30, 2025 or later, and the family is considering mediation outside of the court.

Watch the full interview attached above.

Among them was 25-year-old junior doctor Mohit Chavda from Ahmedabad, who described his harrowing escape through dense, choking smoke after the plane tore through the dining hall.

"A gust of wind and smoke just entered from the windows into the hall where we were eating. Everybody panicked, first of all, because of the 'boom' of the sound which we heard from the blast, and there was almost zero visibility. We were unable to see who was sitting beside us. So we just ran from there," Mohit said.

A devastating air disaster in India has caused the grief of families mourning the loss of at least 279 lives after a London-bound passenger jet crashed. The victims in Ahmedabad spanned a wide spectrum of society, from a prominent political figure to a teenage tea vendor.

Of the 242 people on board, only one survived: a British national who miraculously emerged from the wreckage of the blazing aircraft on Thursday afternoon. His escape stands as the sole story of survival.

Among the victims was 68-year-old Vijay Rupani, a prominent figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party and the former Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The UK Home Office is under scrutiny following allegations of racism after it refused a visa application submitted by a Nigerian security firm owner and his family.

The case has drawn public criticism and raised concerns about the UK's visa policies toward Nigerian nationals.

Samuel Onyekachi Ibeawuchi, the head of Bkay Security Ltd, along with his wife and 18-month-old child, were denied a UK visitor visa. The company has reportedly provided security services for former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, international political figures, and footballer Alex Iwobi.

What happened?

The family planned to travel to the UK for a three-week visit to see relatives. Despite presenting extensive documentation, including business credentials and assurances of financial and logistical support from family members in the UK, their visa application was rejected.

The family intended to stay with Ibeawuchi’s sister, Hope Ibeawuchi-Beales, and her husband, Nick Beales.

Ibeawuchi, his wife, and their 18-month-old child planned to visit his sister, Hope Ibeawuchi-Beales, and her husband, Nick Beales, this summer. The Beales family had pledged financial and logistical support for the trip.

Why was the visa denied?

The Home Office stated that the provided sponsorship did not prove the applicant’s intention to return to Nigeria after the visit. It also raised doubts about the legitimacy of Ibeawuchi’s self-employed income, even though he had submitted official business documentation.

Nick Beales, head of campaigning at the migrant rights group Ramfel, condemned the decision, claiming, “There’s no doubt that the UK government refused these visa applications as part of their overtly racist crackdown on Nigerians.”

Ibeawuchi responded with disappointment, stating: “I feel very bad that the Home Office refused us. We do not want to stay in the UK, just to come here to visit our family for three weeks.”

The incident surfaces at a time of heightened immigration controls, with the UK recording net migration figures of 906,000 in 2023 and 782,000 in 2024. Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently pledged tighter immigration measures, further intensifying visa scrutiny. In a speech delivered in May, he vowed to "take back control" with new rules that make it harder to obtain a visa to the United Kingdom.

African nations experience some of the highest rates of visa rejection globally. In 2024, the continent collectively incurred losses amounting to tens of millions of euros in non-refundable application fees due to denials of EU visas. Nigeria topped this list, facing a loss of €4.3 million to EU visa rejections.

Ghana cedi rebounds to ¢12.33 against the US dollar

The Ghanaian cedi has rebounded sharply, now trading at ¢12.33 to the US dollar, per Bank of Ghana data. This recovery follows a nearly 25% year-to-date depreciation and is attributed to strong central bank interventions and improved dollar inflows from exports. At the interbank level, the cedi buys at ¢12.3138 and sells at ¢12.3262. It also gained against the British pound (¢16.32) and the euro (¢13.72). The central bank cited stabilising market conditions but stressed the need for continued vigilance. Favourable gold export prices and disciplined fiscal policies are key to sustaining the trend, as Ghana continues debt restructuring talks.

Ghana and Afreximbank in dispute over $768m debt

Ghana, emerging from a major debt restructuring, is now in a dispute with Afreximbank over a $768.4 million loan. Ghana wants the loan restructured like its other debts, but Afreximbank insists it holds “preferred creditor status” and should be repaid in full. The disagreement could delay Ghana’s debt resolution and set a precedent for how regional lenders are treated in future restructurings across Africa. Ghana’s Finance Ministry rejects Afreximbank’s claim, saying its debt is not senior to others. Similar issues have complicated debt talks in countries like Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Ghana Integrity Initiative targets local communities in anti-corruption drive

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), in partnership with CDD-Ghana and GACC, and with EU funding, organised a two-day capacity-building workshop for citizen groups in Akuapem North Municipality. The training focused on the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, and aimed to empower participants to combat corruption in their communities. GII’s Programs and Research Officer, Mr. Jacob Tetteh Ahuno, highlighted the importance of collective action and the need to mobilise civil society in the fight against corruption. He urged participants to raise awareness through outreach in schools, churches, mosques, and markets. The workshop, themed “Citizens Anti-Corruption Training,” is part of the EU-funded “Strengthening Accountability, Rule of Law, and Institutional Responsiveness in Ghana” project. Attendees included representatives from churches, PWDs, NCCE, CHRAJ, GHABA, traditional leaders, and the media.

UK trade envoy visits Ghana to strengthen economic ties

The British High Commission in Accra has announced that Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the UK’s Trade Envoy to Ghana, will make her first official visit from 19–22 May 2025, with engagements in Accra and Kumasi. Appointed in January by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ribeiro-Addy’s visit underscores the UK’s commitment to deepening trade relations and economic cooperation with Ghana. She will meet with key stakeholders, including Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak, traditional leaders, academics, UK businesses, and the GIPC. Discussions will focus on trade expansion, investment, and mutual economic growth.

Ghana's cocoa faces EU ban over heavy metal contamination – Dutch envoy

Ghana risks having its cocoa rejected by the European market due to contamination from heavy metals, warns Jeroen Verheul, Dutch Ambassador to Ghana. He attributed the threat to illegal mining activities, which not only reduce cocoa production but also pollute water sources that could affect cocoa beans. Verheul noted that some farmers are accepting large sums from gold prospectors to give up their cocoa farms, further worsening the decline. Ghana’s cocoa output has dropped significantly in recent years, posing a direct threat to trade, especially with the Netherlands, which imports about 300,000 metric tonnes of cocoa annually. Speaking to The Ghanaian Times , he emphasised the urgent need to address "Galamsey" and protect Ghana’s cocoa industry.

The court's judgment clarified that under the Equality Act, "sex" refers to biological sex, not gender identity. This means that spaces and services designated as women-only can legally exclude trans women, even if they hold a Gender Recognition Certificate, if they were not born female.

"It really does feel as though the state wants to kill us," said Helen Belcher, a prominent trans rights campaigner and chair of the advocacy group TransActual.

Speaking to the AFP following the court’s decision, Belcher said the ruling represents a fundamental denial of trans people's identities and lived realities.

Belcher, 61, who is also a Liberal Democrat politician, said the implications of the ruling are already being felt within the trans community.

"I fear for people's mental health. I fear for people's physical health. I fear for people's ability to earn money. They've issued a ruling that sex is biological, but they haven't defined what biological means,” said Belcher

Belcher warned and reasoned that the judgment leans on a rigid and outdated framework, dismissing scientific literature that recognises sex and gender as complex spectrums.

“They're relying very much on a Trumpian, evangelical Christian simplistic world model,” Belcher said, “ignoring all huge amounts of scientific literature, which says that sex is not binary, it's not simple, it's really complex. In their judgment, they have decided basically that intersex people and non-binary people don't exist. And it's awful."

Belcher, who transitioned more than 20 years ago, described the ruling as a deeply personal blow.

“To go through that process - sometimes painful process - of getting to understand myself, having invasive medical questioning, some painful surgeries, to then be told, ‘Yeah, but you're still a man,’ is deliberately and intentionally cruel.”

The ruling has brought back the already polarised national debate over trans rights. However, the Supreme Court justices emphasised that trans people remain protected under the Equality Act against discrimination and harassment.

According to the ruling , “The concept of sex is binary; a person is either a woman or a man”.

The court’s decision was based on the definition of biological sex in the Equality Act 2010.

The decision ends a six-year-long legal battle between the Scottish government and campaign group For Women Scotland.

It also settles questions about who can be counted as a woman in laws that are meant to protect women’s rights.

Lord Hodge, one of the top judges, delivered the ruling in a detailed judgment that took almost 17 minutes to explain in court. The full ruling is 88 pages long.

Why the court made this decision

According to the judges, the Equality Act clearly defines the conditions under which various groups should be protected. In their view, changing the definition of sex to include those with gender recognition certificates would make the law confusing and hard to apply.

“The definition of sex in the Equality Act 2010 makes clear that the concept of sex is binary. A person is either a woman or a man,” part of the ruling said.

The judges also said using different meanings for words like “woman” would create unfairness, especially if some transgender people had legal recognition while others did not.

That would lead to groups with mixed rights, which, according to the judges, was not practical.

In simple terms, they found that the law protects people based on whether they are biologically male or female, not what is written on a certificate.

What the judges based their ruling on

The UK Supreme Court gave nine main reasons for saying that the Equality Act 2010 uses the word “woman” to mean someone born female.

The judges said the law protects people from discrimination based on sex and gender reassignment, but the meaning of sex must stay clear and consistent.

The first reason was that the Equality Act is built around group protections. It protects people as part of a group, like all women or all men, and not just individuals. This means sex needs a clear, shared meaning.

Secondly, they said the law must be applied in a way that is “clear and consistent”. Changing what the word “woman” means in some parts of the law would create confusion.

Third, using “certified sex” (the sex on a Gender Recognition Certificate) instead of biological sex would mix people into groups that were never meant to be mixed under the law. This would make it hard to apply the rules.

Fourth, they said that the ordinary meaning of “sex discrimination” in the law is about biological sex, not legal documents or identity.

Fifth, if “woman” could mean different things in different parts of the law, the whole Act would stop making sense. For example, rules about pregnancy clearly apply only to biological women.

Sixth, if the Scottish government’s view were used, it would create two groups of trans people — those with legal certificates and those without. The judges said this would be unfair and confusing, especially since who has a certificate is private information.

Seventh, using gender certificates to define “woman” would mean some people have more rights than others, which was not the aim of the law.

Eighth, they said the Scottish government’s rules went against the purpose of the Equality Act and could not legally change what the law means.

The ninth reason was that letting ministers change the meaning of a word in a UK-wide law like the Equality Act was not allowed. Only the UK Parliament can do that.

What this means for transgender people

While many supporters of For Women Scotland were seen crying, hugging, and celebrating outside the court, the judges made it clear this was not a victory over transgender people.

“This should not be seen as a triumph for one group over another,” said Lord Hodge, who read the ruling .

The court also stressed that transgender people still have legal protection under the Equality Act. Being transgender, also called gender reassignment in the law, remains a protected characteristic.

A person can still face discrimination for being trans, and the law says they must not be treated unfairly. Even without a Gender Recognition Certificate, transgender people are still protected.

How the dispute started

The case began in 2018 after the Scottish government passed a law to increase the number of women on public boards. The law included some transgender women in the count.

For Women Scotland challenged that decision. They said only people born female should be included in targets set for women, such as filling 50% of non-executive roles on public boards.

The court agreed, indicating that including trans women in the count of women for these targets is not supported by the legal meaning of the word “woman” in the Equality Act.

Reactions from both sides

Supporters of For Women Scotland were emotional and joyful after the ruling. Some called the women who brought the case “she-roes” and celebrated outside the court by singing, “women’s rights are human rights.”

Baroness Kishwer Falkner, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), said the decision answered difficult questions about protecting single-sex spaces and same-sex rights.

Former MP Harriet Harman, who helped write the Equality Act, said the court made the right call. “Single-sex spaces for women are important and can exclude trans women, but only where necessary,” she told the BBC .

Trans rights groups, however, urged calm. Scottish Trans, a charity in Edinburgh, told people not to panic.

“There will be a lot of talk that overstates how this will affect trans people,” the group said in a message online. “Please look after yourselves and each other today.”

What happens next?

This ruling is a major moment in the UK’s gender rights debate. The case was adjourned in court after Lord Hodge concluded the judgment by saying that the court had allowed the appeal by For Women Scotland, having outlined a number of reasons why.

Although the case is concluded, it is likely to return to the political arena as campaigners on both sides push for change.

If Russia gains control of part of Ukraine and secures a commitment that Ukraine won't join NATO, Vladimir Putin will be partially vindicated.

Crackdown on illegal miners

In Stilfontein, southwest of Johannesburg, South African police have apprehended 834 illegal miners, identified as "zama zamas," amid harsh conditions following deprivation of food and water supplies in a disused gold mine. This operation contributes to a broader initiative that has seen over 13,691 arrests of suspected illegal miners across the country since December 2023, alongside significant seizures including approximately 5 million rand (roughly $282,155) in cash and uncut diamonds valued at around 32 million rand (roughly $1.8 million).

Food poisoning sparks xenophobic attacks

A concerning outbreak of food poisoning in South Africa, connected to grocery stores operated by migrants, has triggered violent reprisals against African migrant shopkeepers, especially those running Somali-owned spaza shops. The unrest has led to looting and the closure of numerous stores, with one reported death exacerbating fears of potential xenophobic violence. In a notable incident, six children in Soweto perished after consuming contaminated snacks. Health officials are now under pressure to ensure safety compliance in these establishments. Analysts point to the delicate social dynamics between local South Africans and migrants, highlighting how economic distress and manipulation of anti-foreigner sentiments can foster hostility. Community leaders are advocating for prompt investigations to protect migrant communities and enhance social harmony.

South Africa closes main border amid Mozambique protest

South Africa has enacted a temporary closure of the Lebombo border crossing with Mozambique due to escalating tensions and safety concerns amid protests over contested election results in Mozambique. Following violent clashes and reports of vehicle burnings, the closure is a precautionary measure until safety can be guaranteed. Protests led by opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, claiming victory in the October 9 election, have resulted in casualties, including at least 10 deaths, and numerous injuries. Demonstrations against the ruling Frelimo party have involved tyre burnings and road blockages, with security forces reacting with tear gas and live ammunition, necessitating this closure for public safety.

South Africa reaches defence agreement with UK

South Africa and Britain have reached an agreement , as confirmed by their foreign ministers after a recent meeting. Britain remains South Africa's largest African trading partner, with trade figures approximating 133 billion rand ($7.62 billion) last year. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has indicated a plan to bolster the UK-South Africa growth initiative focusing on economic advancement and agricultural trade. Both parties recognised the necessity to revitalise their trade relationships, which have stagnated amid the pandemic, and discussed enhancing collaborative efforts in defence, particularly in counter-terrorism and environmental transitions.

Prince William addresses tragic murders

During his speech at the United for Wildlife's third Global Summit in South Africa, Prince William highlighted the indispensable role of wildlife rangers, paying tribute to the late Anton Mzimba, who was tragically murdered by poachers in 2022. He addressed the urgent need for better support and protection of rangers who face significant threats in their line of duty. As part of his initiative, he unveiled a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at providing 10,000 rangers with essential medical insurance and training opportunities. Additionally, a documentary is to be produced to shed light on the multitude of challenges these conservation heroes encounter.

Some UK business sectors are really gonna be struggling on the back of this budget, including hospitality, leisure and retail, which generally employ staff around the minimum wage, which is being forced up and much larger cost to businesses might mean empty properties and less leisure choices for the population there.

At 34, Baker, who lost feeling in her legs due to transverse myelitis, credits the RDA with teaching her vital skills that have led to her impressive tally of 10 Paralympic medals, including six golds across four games.

Known as the "horse whisperer," Baker communicates with her horses using her voice, a technique she developed at RDA's Park Lane Stables in Teddington, London. "I can't use my legs at all when I ride, so I have to find another way to encourage the horse to go forward for me," she told AFP.

"I think horses just have a magical way of understanding what you're asking them to do," she added. "It doesn't matter whether you're able-bodied or whether you have a disability, they have a sixth sense."

This vocal communication is permitted for Paralympic riders, unlike able-bodied competitors.

While mentoring young riders at Park Lane, one of 450 RDA locations across the UK, Baker shared her experiences. The RDA has received notable recognition, including being named the charity for this year's London International Horse Show from December 18-22.

Natalie O'Rourke, the founder and manager of Park Lane Stables, raised £1.4 million ($1.8 million) through crowdfunding during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Young riders like nine-year-old Elle Dimitrijevic have shown remarkable improvements in confidence and physical ability. Her mother, Angela, shared how the experience has shifted their focus to what Elle can achieve rather than her limitations.

With around 13,000 volunteers, the RDA is supported by individuals like 14-year-old Yohannes "Yo Yo" D'Allio, who has been volunteering for over two years. He expressed his love for horses, saying, "They don't judge you; you can be whoever you want to be."

RDA CEO Michael Bishop spoke about the emotional impact the organization has on families. He shared stories of parents moved to tears by the positive changes in their children after RDA sessions, noting that these experiences help foster a sense of normalcy and connection within families.

During her landmark visit to Chad , where she became the first member of the British Royal Family to officially visit the nation, the Duchess emphasised the urgent need for more support to help refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan.

While in Chad, the Duchess travelled to Adré, a town located just 400 metres from the Sudanese border, which is currently receiving approximately 400 new refugees from Sudan every day.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has forced nearly 11 million people to flee their homes in search of safety, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.

During her visit, the Duchess met with humanitarian workers from organisations such as UNICEF and the UNHCR, who are on the frontlines providing aid and support to Sudanese refugees displaced by the ongoing violence. She also spoke with refugees, including women and children, who had recently escaped the conflict in Sudan.

Neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, have been significantly impacted by the refugee crisis. South Sudan alone has seen over 810,000 arrivals since the conflict began, placing immense pressure on its already limited resources.

According to the World Economic Forum , there are an estimated 272 million international migrants globally, making up about 3.5% of the world's population. Russia, for instance, is home to the largest number of illegal immigrants, with estimates suggesting 12 million unauthorised residents

The United States and Germany also see significant numbers of illegal migrants due to their economic opportunities and geopolitical positions.

The reasons behind illegal migration vary from economic hardship and political instability to environmental factors and family reunification. For example, many migrants from Mexico enter the United States seeking better economic opportunities, driven by the proximity and the promise of the "American Dream".

Despite the measures and strategies adopted by countries to block entirely illegal migration, they have been futile for years.

As former U.S. President Barack Obama once said, "We are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too." This quote resonates with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) which said "Migration is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be managed."

Below are ten countries in the world with the largest number of illegal migrants:

Denmark - The Dannebrog (1370):

Denmark's flag, known as the Dannebrog, is recognised as the oldest national flag in continuous use. According to legend, the Dannebrog miraculously fell from the sky during a battle in 1219, leading to a Danish victory. Its simple yet striking design - a white cross on a red field - has remained largely unchanged since 1370.

Netherlands - The Dutch Flag (1660):

The Dutch flag, characterised by its horizontal red, white, and blue stripes, was officially adopted in 1660. This design evolved from the earlier Prinsenvlag, which featured orange instead of red. The modern flag became a powerful symbol of Dutch independence and national identity, particularly during the struggle against Spanish rule.

United Kingdom - The Union Jack (1801):

The Union Jack, established in 1801, combines elements of the flags of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The flag symbolises the political union of these nations within the United Kingdom and remains a potent emblem of British national unity. Its iconic design is recognised worldwide, reflecting the UK’s historical influence and colonial legacy.

Other old flags in Europe include; France (1830) - the Tricolore, with its blue, white, and red vertical stripes, was officially adopted after the French Revolution and symbolises liberty, equality, and fraternity. Belgium (1831) - The Belgian flag features vertical black, yellow, and red stripes, adopted shortly after the country gained independence from the Netherlands.

Turkey (1844); the Turkish flag, with its red background and white star and crescent, was officially adopted in 1844 and has become a symbol of the nation's Islamic heritage and history. San Marino (1862) - San Marino’s flag, with its white and light blue horizontal bands and the national coat of arms, reflects the country's status as one of the world’s oldest republics. Monaco (1881) - Monaco's flag, identical to Indonesia's but with different proportions, features red and white horizontal bands and has represented the principality since 1881.

Switzerland (1889) - The Swiss flag, with its distinctive white cross on a red square, symbolizes neutrality, peace, and the country's alpine heritage. Norway (1899) - Norway's flag, with its red background and blue cross outlined in white, was adopted in 1899, reflecting its Scandinavian heritage and Christian faith.

UK government's decisive action praised amid anti-immigration unrest: Video

Speaking about the government's response to Global South World , the filmmaker, a resident of Middlesbrough, noted the swift deployment of law enforcement and the immediate condemnation of the violent actions by Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.

"I’m not even going to lie, literally 30 minutes of the riots breaking out…the Prime Minister already gave a speech and the intensified police everywhere. While it was happening, there were helicopters around. You could literally hear them in the video I made. There were police everywhere but the numbers were a lot at that time literally less than an hour after…in his speech that was where he condemned them as far rights and said they were going to be charged. The court started sitting for 24 hours and they started charging them immediately. People are getting six months, twelve months in prison,” said Oluwasemilore.

The filmmaker believes the government's actions played a crucial role in curbing the violence and preventing further unrest. "The measures taken by the UK government undoubtedly helped a lot, I’m not going to lie," he stated. "The UK government kudos, they did well to cop this thing happening.”

Concerns about racism despite government efforts

However, despite the government's efforts, the filmmaker expressed ongoing concerns about the deep-rooted issue of racism in society. They highlighted the pervasive nature of racial prejudice, noting that the problem extends beyond immediate actions and requires long-term solutions.

“I still feel unsafe walking around, you know, cause, I just feel like this thing is embedded in people like from, like their childhood. Like you see, like kids, everyone. You see the video online, you would see kids, you see people that literally don't even know what they are fighting for. I think what the UK government can do is just, cop it in a little way, which is what they are doing. But, this thing is deep down, like into people like this thing is deep down into people. And it is so sad. It is so sad that some people just feel like because you have a different skin colour. You are better than I am. I just do not understand it,” Oluwasemilore said.

The filmmaker emphasised the need for re-education to address the underlying issues of racism, arguing that media, folklore, and generational biases contribute to the problem. "It's not just about enforcing laws; it's about changing minds. Music, films, and other forms of media can play a crucial role in showing that everyone is equal, regardless of skin colour or religion. Racism is not inherent to any race - it's about individual attitudes and behaviour. The world needs more love and understanding. Until re-education reaches the grassroots, I fear the situation won't change. The UK government has made a good start, but there's still a long way to go."

British authorities have arrested over 1,000 individuals in connection with days of rioting that involved violence, arson, looting, and racist attacks targeting Muslims and migrants, a national policing body reported on Tuesday. The unrest began in response to the killings of three young girls in the northern town of Southport on July 29. This incident was falsely attributed to an Islamist migrant due to online misinformation.

In an emotional recount, Oluwasemilore, known on social media as King SBB described in an interview with Global South World how his proximity to the targeted area made him feel like a potential victim.

"When it started, I was in my house, which isn’t too far from the Pakistani area in Middlesbrough. It felt like we were a target. They literally targeted the street behind me, and it was really bad. I could hear the screaming and shouting - it was scary," Oluwasemilore recalled.

As the chaos unfolded outside, Oluwasemilore was also confronted with disturbing videos circulating online, showing attacks on people of colour and Muslims.

"That moment when I made that viral video, it was really bad. I was terrified and scared, knowing that I could get attacked for my skin colour without doing anything. It was a scary point in my life," he told GSW.

The traumatic experience has left a traumatizing impact on Oluwasemilore, who now feels constantly on edge in his daily life in Middlesbrough. "It has traumatized me so much that when I walk the streets of Middlesbrough, I’m always looking around, especially because it’s a really white-dominated area. That’s why the impact was huge. I’m always very cautious; I wasn’t like that when I first came here."

The filmmaker also shared that the riots have made him feel unsafe to the point where he avoids going out at night. "Since these riots, I’m always very wary of my environment. I can’t even take night walks anymore because you don’t know who hates you."

Anti-racism march

As the riots have simmered, the psychological toll and business losses that the riots have caused residents, especially those from minority communities are profound.

Some businesses are reportedly still counting losses as the riots have resulted in substantial property damage, stock losses, and a decline in sales as shoppers prefer to stay indoors.

Meanwhile, thousands of anti-racism protesters have since gathered in towns and cities across England in response to the riots. Stand Up to Racism organised up to 22 'Stop the Far Right' demonstrations on August 10 in cities including London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

The unrest was sparked earlier this month by a fatal knife attack on children in Southport, which misinformation on social media falsely attributed to an illegal immigrant and Muslim.

The demonstrations, held in response to the unrest, follow a series of destructive protests that erupted after the tragic stabbing of three young girls in Southport, northwest England, last week.

The riots began after false reports circulated online, incorrectly identifying the suspected attacker as an Islamist migrant. The misinformation fueled tensions and led to widespread violence.

Carrying placards with messages like “Refugees Welcome” and “Reject Racism, Try Therapy,” protesters gathered in towns and cities, determined to push back against the hate-fueled rhetoric. The marches took place nine days after the fatal incident in Merseyside, aiming to restore calm and promote unity.

In anticipation of further unrest , around 6,000 riot-trained officers were deployed to manage the rallies and nearly 30 counter-protests. The heightened security comes after immigration law firms and refugee centres were named as potential targets by far-right groups on the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

Despite the heavy police presence, the anti-racism protests remained largely peaceful.

Windows are being boarded up across the UK as police, residents, and businesses prepare for anticipated disruption from planned anti-immigration protests.

In Northampton, shops and properties have begun taking precautionary measures in response to concerns about potential chaos from right-wing rioters.

Pub landlords and estate agents are among those expressing concern after receiving warnings from police about the protests scheduled for Wednesday, August 7.

In London, where demonstrations are planned at four locations, local businesses were visited by authorities yesterday and advised to secure their premises. Similarly, shops in Bristol have also boarded up their windows, fearing possible targeting by protestors.

An immigration bureau near Walthamstow Central underground station in northeast London has been identified online as one of the potential protest sites in the capital. As the planned protests draw closer, businesses across the country are bracing for potential disruptions.

This decision, made after months of consideration, aims to address the unsustainable surge in asylum applications from Namibians arriving in the UK.

"I understand the frustrations expressed immediately after the UK imposed the visa regime," Moore said. "For many months, we were clear about not imposing a visa regime. However, we finally imposed it due to an unsustainable and significant increase in the number of Namibians claiming asylum on arrival in the UK," the Namibian Sun reports.

Moore highlighted that in the years leading up to July 2023, over 1,000 Namibians claimed asylum upon arrival in the UK, the highest number from any country that did not require a visa at the time. Since the implementation of the visa regime, the number of asylum applications from Namibia has dropped to just five.

He added that many individuals were applying for asylum to exploit an 18-month grace period. "This is wrong. This increase happened over a year, and was getting worse and would have gotten [even] worse had we not implemented a visa regime," Moore stated.

The new visa regime has caused inconvenience for genuine Namibian visitors, including business people, officials, and tourists, who now face longer processing times and higher costs for visas. "It now takes 15 working days for a visa to be issued - something Namibians have not been used to for 34 years," Moore noted.

Moore also explained that the issue was not necessarily about overwhelming the country but about the negative economic impact on the UK, including the high costs associated with removing asylum seekers. "This situation strains our public finances. Protecting our borders is crucial, and just as the UK has the right to enforce its visa regimes, Namibia - as a sovereign country - also has the right to control its borders and determine who can enter the country," he said.

Newly appointed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, July 19, to 10 Downing Street in London, the official residence and office of the UK Prime Minister.

Zelensky is the first foreign leader to visit the British Prime Minister’s residence since the leader of the Labour Party assumed office two weeks ago.

Starmer assured Zelenskyy of the UK government’s continued support to Ukraine despite the change of government.

“We support the previous government. We are united in our parliament in our support for Ukraine. We may want to make sure that the commitment is increased. We announced some of that in the last two weeks,” he said.

The Ukraine President will be the first foreign leader to address the UK Cabinet since Bill Clinton in 1997 and the first this century.

“You will be the first leader from another country to address the Cabinet later on today, This century. So it's a very special moment for us to be able to welcome you here to reiterate our support for you and the Ukrainian people in the fight against Russia,” Starmer added.

“Thank you for the invitation. The UK has been with us from the very beginning of this war of full-scale war. We feel the support,” Zelensky said.

In an earlier post on his official X account, the UK Prime Minister said, “I won't allow Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers, and the dirty money it generates, to flow freely through European waters and put our security at risk.”

“Ukraine is, and always will be, at the heart of my government’s agenda,” he added.

This figure places Mexico sixth globally, surpassing popular destinations like the United Kingdom (37 million), Germany (35 million), and Greece (33 million).

The influx of tourists impacted Mexico's economy with tourism injecting approximately $46.4 billion into the country's GDP in 2023. The sector also witnessed a remarkable 15% growth compared to the previous year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

But the story of Mexico's tourism success goes beyond statistics. According to Statista , the country's commitment to improving its airport and flight infrastructure contributed to the astronomical tourist numbers.

"By developing airport infrastructure and calibrating new direct flights, Mexico has set international tourism high on its priorities list. At the forefront of Mexico's spike in international tourism is the FONATUR, or Mexico's National Fund for Tourism Development. The tourism body worked in the expansion of Cancun's airport and other four key tourist airports in the country. Plus, Mexico City's airport added new international direct flights in the 2010s, resulting in being rated as the best internationally connected airport in Latin America in 2019," Statista reports.

Connolly Cove also attributes Mexico's tourism achievement to destinations like Cancun. It remained the most popular destination attracting 25% of all visitors. Chichen Itza and Tulum, famous for their ancient Mayan ruins also drew 18% of tourists.

Additionally, colonial cities like Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende accounted for 12% of visitors and Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, known for their Pacific beaches, attracted 10% of tourists.

What we know

What they said

At the press conference, Starmer emphasised that the Rwanda deportation policy would be abandoned, stating that it would have removed only about 1% of asylum seekers and failed as a deterrent. "The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started. It's never been a deterrent. I'm not prepared to continue with gimmicks that don't act as a deterrent," Reuters reports. Starmer asserted. He added, "We're going to have to take the tough decisions and take them early, and we will. We will do that with a raw honesty." Starmer clarified that this approach did not imply any unexpected tax decisions that had not been previously discussed.

Rwanda Roundup: Tax revenue, new stadium, migrant plan

Plans to raise tax revenue

Rwanda plans to raise over $2.2 billion in taxes for the 2024/25 fiscal year to fund key investments in agriculture, private sector development, and other priority sectors. The Rwanda Revenue Authority aims to maximise revenue collection through initiatives such as widening the tax base and sustaining tax compliance. Overall, domestic resources are expected to contribute about 64% of the total budget, with other revenues apart from taxes expected to contribute more than $338 million. According to The New Times , external resources are expected to contribute slightly more than $1.5 billion, including grants and foreign loans.

Kagame inaugrates new stadium

President Kagame inaugurated the newly renovated Amahoro Stadium with a seating capacity of 45,000. The ceremony was attended by high-level officials including CAF president Patrice Motsepe. Kagame used the opportunity to praise African football governing bodies for inspiring the renovation and emphasised the importance of world-class sports infrastructure in nurturing local football talent. The stadium was approved by FIFA to host international football events. Motsepe commended Rwanda for the facility and expressed confidence in the country's football potential. The inauguration was followed by a friendly match between Rwandan champions APR FC and Police FC, with APR FC winning 1-0, reports The New Time.

Saving rate

By the close of 2023, Rwanda's savings rate was recorded at 12.5% of its GDP, which then declined to 11.3% in the initial quarter of the current year. The Rwandan government had set an ambitious goal of reaching a 23% savings rate by the conclusion of 2024. However, this objective now appears challenging due to the downward trajectory that has persisted since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the nation's savings rate had ascended to 16% in 2021 but subsequently decreased to 15% in 2022, and experienced a further dip in 2023, amidst a series of macroeconomic hurdles impacting the economy, adds The New Time .

Detained migrants set free

Detained migrants in the UK were set free as the Home Office plans to end the deportation scheme under the Labour Party. Charities secured their release through legal action. The scheme, codenamed Vector, targeted migrants for deportation to Rwanda. The release comes as the Home Office prepares to end the scheme if Labour wins the General Election. Former Home Secretary warns Tories to prepare for opposition. Both parties exchange criticisms over the effectiveness of the Rwanda deportation scheme, reports GB News .

What Rwandans think Labour should do with the migrant plan

The UK's Labour plans to scrap the Tories’ migration deal with Rwanda if it wins the election, and many in Rwanda agree. Presidential candidate Frank Habineza opposes the plan, believing it violates migrants’ human rights. He also believes migrants would struggle to find work in Rwanda. While some see the deal as a source of jobs and money, Habineza thinks it would overload infrastructure and services. Despite this, the deal is not a priority for his party. Analysts say most citizens don't care about the deal; they are more focused on growing the economy and improving living standards. Habineza's biggest policy is food security, and he wants to reduce reliance on food imports. Both Namibia and Botswana rejected similar deals, and Costa Rica has confirmed it has not been approached by the UK for such a deal, iNews reports.
