"This base will make us the most important logistics hub in the South Atlantic and will be fundamental for Argentina's geopolitical projection," Milei said, adding that he would urgently send a national sovereignty bill to Congress.

The president also announced faster sanctions under Law 26,659 against companies involved in oil extraction in areas Argentina considers to be under British occupation.

"The Falkland Islands are Argentine by history and by right. There is no discussion about it," Milei said, reaffirming that his government would continue pursuing the claim through diplomatic and legal means.

The Falkland Islands, around 500 kilometres off Argentina's coast, remain at the centre of a longstanding sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The dispute led to a 74-day war in 1982, in which 649 Argentine service members, 255 British personnel and three islanders were killed.

He said housing offenders in El Salvador would cost half as much as keeping them in the UK and would free up prison space . Farage also repeated his proposal for “Nightingale prisons”, saying Reform UK believes it could provide 12,000 additional prison places within the first 18 months of a Reform government. The comments came as Prime Minister Andy Burnham faced an “early release” controversy over plans to release around 6,000 criminals early to ease prison overcrowding.

One demonstrator said the protest was against the UK government's position on Gaza .

"I'm here protesting the government's complicity in genocide. The UK is signatories to the Genocide Convention, and as such we have a duty to prevent and punish the crime of genocide. Yet these guys are crushing the dissent against our government's complicity. So as far as I can see, they're complicity too."

Another protester said: "I remember Anne Frank and Hind Rajab, two children who were Nazis of then and the Nazis of now: Germany and Israel."

A demonstrator who said police had previously raided their home said they would continue supporting the group.

"I won't be deterred. Their goal is to intimidate everyone here today, as it was when I was raided. We're still here until we get a free Palestine."

The Metropolitan Police said 117 people were arrested on suspicion of expressing support for a proscribed organisation, an offence under the Terrorism Act.

The proscription order against Palestine Action took effect on July 5, 2025. In February, the High Court ruled the decision unlawful, but the order remained in force while the government appealed. The Court of Appeal later overturned that ruling and found the proscription lawful.

The UK Supreme Court has granted the group's co-founder permission, in part, to appeal the Court of Appeal ruling. An expedited hearing is due later this year.

According to Palestine Action, more than 3,500 people have been arrested under the Terrorism Act in connection with demonstrations supporting the group.

Responding first, Starmer said Britain's commitment to Ukraine would continue beyond his time in office.

“I am very confident in saying that this commitment and support of the UK for Ukraine will remain unwavering. We will stand by you, Volodymyr, and the Ukrainian people for as long as necessary, and long after that,” he said.

Zelensky acknowledged the uncertainty created by changes in political leadership while Ukraine remains at war.

“When you ask, what about us, of course, I am concerned about changes, of course, I am afraid because we are at war every day,” he said.

“I hope that we never lose strong relations with the United Kingdom during and after the war. Thank you very much.”

During Starmer's tenure, the UK has remained one of Ukraine's largest military and financial backers. On Thursday, he announced an additional €300 million in support for Swedish-made fighter jets, adding to the UK's assistance for Ukraine this year.

The United Kingdom has provided billions of pounds in military, humanitarian and economic assistance since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Starmer announced last month that he would step down as prime minister. His departure comes as the UK prepares for a change in leadership while maintaining its support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict .
