While wealthy nations are pouring billions into solar, wind, and green hydrogen, many less industrialised countries already generate the majority of their electricity from renewable sources.

According to recent data confirmed by the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2025, a surprising number of nations, particularly in Africa, have overwhelmingly renewable electricity grids.

Here are the top 10 countries with the highest share of renewable electricity production:

What these numbers show is that countries often overlooked in global energy conversations are, in fact, global leaders when it comes to renewable reliance. Much of this dominance comes from hydropower, supported in some cases by biomass and smaller-scale solar and wind systems.

In places like DR Congo and Ethiopia, vast river systems provide clean electricity, while in Kenya and Tanzania, investments in geothermal and hydropower have transformed their national energy profiles.

The 2025 Statistical Review of World Energy highlights the significance of these shifts in a broader global context. Worldwide, energy demand rose by around 2% in 2024, but electricity demand grew even faster at nearly 4%, creating pressure to expand capacity quickly.

For the first time, low-carbon electricity sources (renewables plus nuclear) accounted for more than 40% of global electricity production, thanks largely to record additions of solar and wind. Yet fossil fuels continue to rise in absolute terms, showing the world is still in a difficult transition phase.

Africa’s dominance in renewable share is not just about resources, but also about constraints. Many of these nations lack the infrastructure to rely heavily on coal, oil, or gas. Electricity demand is relatively low compared to industrialised economies, which means that even modest renewable installations can supply the majority of power.

At the same time, dependence on hydropower makes these systems vulnerable to drought and climate variability, raising questions about resilience and reliability.

Globally, the conversation around renewables is moving beyond capacity building to issues of finance, policy, and grid integration. Recent news reflects a major pact cut public funding for fossil fuels by as much as 78% in 2024, while clean energy investments in 2025 are projected to reach $2.2 trillion, nearly double fossil fuel financing.

Minagie Energy is addressing a critical issue: At present, 600 million people , or 43% of the total population, lack access to electricity , most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

This gap has had repercussions for health and education. Johannes, alongside a co-founder with a public health background, recognised that unreliable electricity could severely affect clinics and hospitals, particularly for maternal and infant care.

"We focus on providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions using our wind turbine technology or other clean energy solutions," Johannes told Global South World in an interview.

The wind turbines aim to lower costs and support local economies. "Our systems are built cheaper because we use 95% local raw materials in the manufacturing and production of our wind turbines, making it sustainable," he explained.

With over ten years in finance, Amo-Aye has worked with Standard Chartered Bank, Fidelity, and other financial institutions in Ghana. He left that sector to provide solutions in the energy industry.

"For us, it’s about addressing the negative impact of poverty on the health sector, the Agric sector, and education. That is the motivation behind starting Minagie Energy," Johannes said.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports that finding a sustainable way to meet growing energy needs is one of the core development challenges for the continent. Africa is however rich in renewable energy sources, such as hydro, sun, wind and others. IRENA suggests now is the right time for sound planning to ensure the right energy mix.

"Our solution offers reduced maintenance costs and downtime, making our system less prone to wear and tear. It is also more energy-efficient than solar and generator systems on the market today," Johannes explained. "Parts of our systems are 3D printed, reducing production times. It's basically two wind turbines in one, so when it comes to energy efficiency, our system stands out."

As they prepare for their pilot, Johannes envisions a future where rural communities have access to reliable power, improving health and education outcomes. 'So with our mission to actually address energy poverty, we're going to make a difference in the lives of all of these people, to bring light to every village, every child."

As Minagie Energy moves forward, Aye is focused on one goal: bringing light to communities that have long been in the dark. This project isn’t just about business for him; it’s about creating a brighter future for those who need it most.

"In five years, I see that we could have facilities running purely on renewable energy, and with Minagie Energy, that is very possible," Johannes remarks.

Anti-Israel activist jailed for 5 years

Moroccan activist Abdul Rahman Zankad has been sentenced to five years in prison for criticising Morocco's decision to normalise relations with Israel. He was found guilty of insulting a constitutional institution and incitement as well as fined $5,000. According to Memo , authorities detained the activist affiliated with Morocco’s Al Adl Wal Ihsane in March 2024 following his Facebook posts discussing the conflict in Gaza and Rabat's recent move to forge diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv. The banned association Al Adl Wal Ihsane condemned the ruling, stating it reflects authoritarianism and tyranny in the state. The sentencing has raised concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression in Morocco.

Boat with 54 irregular migrants intercepted

The Royal Armed Forces intercepted a boat with 54 irregular migrants near Dakhla, Morocco on April 10. This is part of a larger trend, with approximately 6,600 individuals attempting to cross to the Canary Islands in January alone. The migrants were identified as sub-Saharan and Asian and were found 186 kilometres south of Dakhla, Morocco World News reveals . Despite efforts to curb migration, the Canary Islands route has seen a tenfold increase in irregular migrant arrivals in January, with Morocco, Algeria, and Bangladesh being the main origins of these migrants. The escalating unrest, economic stagnation, and political upheaval in the Sahel region have exacerbated the situation, prompting many desperate individuals to seek entry into Europe via the Spanish archipelago.

Unprecedented heat waves

Morocco is set to experience a heatwave and strong winds in multiple provinces, with temperatures expected to reach 35 to 42 degrees Celsius in some areas. The country has been investing in water infrastructure to mitigate the effects of water shortages caused by consecutive heat waves. The lack of rainfall has left dams at less than 40% capacity. However, the government is working to accelerate the construction of desalination plants, with several set to open in the coming years, Morocco World News suggests.

Video game market to witness 9% growth rate

Between 2024 and 2027, the video game industry in Morocco is anticipated to grow steadily at an annual rate of 9.39%. This growth trajectory is forecasted to lead to sales reaching $227.3 million in 2024 and escalating to $297.5 million by 2027, reports Morocco World News . With 8.4 million users expected in 2027, downloadable games represent the largest segment of the market. The industry's major revenue sources are in-game purchases, in-game consumer spending, and subscription fees. The market is catching the attention of global leaders in the gaming and e-sports sectors, with potential investment prospects being explored.

Drug trafficking attempts thwarted

On April 10, 2024, Moroccan national security forces, in collaboration with customs services stationed at the Beni Ansar centre in northeastern Morocco's Nador province, effectively intercepted an international trafficking attempt involving psychotropic drugs. They seized over 1,400 psychotropic tablets and arrested a 56-year-old Spanish national in connection with the case. According to Morocco World News , the suspect has been detained for a judicial inquiry overseen by the Judicial Police Brigade in Nador and the relevant public prosecutor's office. The ongoing investigations aim to determine whether this transnational criminal activity has consequences at local or global levels. To uphold social order, Moroccan police deploy additional forces for security operations during national holidays such as Eid Al Fitr.
