The twin pandas, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, will be returned to China in late January when their loan period expires, leaving the country without any giant pandas for the first time since 1972.

The move was confirmed this month by the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Tokyo Zoological Park Society.

Pandas first arrived in Japan following the normalisation of diplomatic ties between Tokyo and Beijing, quickly becoming cultural ambassadors and a powerful draw for visitors.

With bilateral relations strained, however, there is no indication that China will approve a new loan to replace the departing pair.

At Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo, the impending farewell has already prompted a surge in interest. The zoo has imposed daily limits on panda visitors and sharply reduced viewing times in an effort to manage crowds and ensure the animals’ welfare during their final weeks on display.

The twins can be seen until January 25, though access is tightly controlled. Reservations are being handled online, with some dates allocated on a first-come basis and others decided by lottery, reflecting demand that far exceeds available slots.

Zoo officials say the focus is now on ensuring a smooth and healthy transfer. Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, born at Ueno in June 2021, will undergo a quarantine period ahead of their return, after which they are expected to join China’s national panda conservation programme.

Their parents, Ri Ri and Shin Shin, were also loaned from China and have since been returned, leaving the twins as Japan’s only pandas.

Despite appeals by Tokyo and national government officials to extend the arrangement or secure a replacement, Beijing has yet to respond.

Conservation experts warn that a prolonged absence of pandas could have broader implications. Advocates argue that the animals play a unique role in fostering public interest in wildlife protection and environmental conservation.

The departure is also expected to be felt beyond the zoo gates. Local tourism groups say pandas have long been a cornerstone of Ueno’s visitor economy , attracting domestic and overseas tourists in large numbers.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel said on November 13 that China has agreed to control seven chemical subsidiaries used to produce the lethal drug, following Beijing’s decision earlier this week to impose export controls on more than a dozen fentanyl precursors.

“The Chinese government agreed on a plan to stop fentanyl precursors,” Patel said at a White House briefing, describing his trip to China last week. “These substances are now banned, and they will no longer be utilised by the Mexican drug trafficking organisations or any other [drug trafficking organisations] around the world to make this drug.”

“Essentially, President Trump has shut off the pipeline that creates fentanyl that kills tens of thousands of Americans,” he added.

Patel arrived in Beijing on November 7 and stayed for about a day, Reuters reported. It was the first visit by an FBI director to China in over a decade, where Patel met his Chinese counterpart to address the issue directly.

In exchange for China’s actions, Washington halved US tariffs from 20 percent to 10 percent on Chinese goods linked to the fentanyl crisis. The synthetic opioid claimed an estimated 48,422 American lives last year, compared with 76,282 in 2023, according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Monday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the country would adjust its list of drug-related precursor chemicals and require licences for exports of certain chemicals to the US, Canada and Mexico .

China’s National Narcotics Control Commission also issued a circular calling on exporters to follow international conventions and “laws and regulations of importing countries, especially high-risk countries such as the United States, Canada, and Mexico.” It urged them to ensure overseas customers “fulfil import legal procedures in accordance with their own national laws and regulations.”

Launch of security sweep near Iraq border over Iran militia fears

Syria has launched a security operation in its eastern border region amid concerns that Iran may activate allied militias to carry out attacks. The move follows intelligence warnings that Iranian-linked groups, some formerly tied to the IRGC and active in cross-border smuggling, could be mobilised to target U.S.-led forces or regional troops as tensions with Israel escalate.

Syria hosts Turkish business delegation for investment review

Syria has received a delegation from the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce as part of efforts to revive cross-border economic ties. Two board members from the chamber visited Damascus for a field study on investment opportunities. The delegation met with Syrian industrialists, the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, and Turkey’s ambassador to Syria, according to Syrian Arab News Agency . Istanbul Chamber President Shekib Avdagic said the visit aimed to explore the potential for reintegration of Syrian entrepreneurs who had lived in Turkey and are now returning home to resume business.

Syria receives first EU passenger flight in over a decade

Syria has received its first passenger flight from a European Union country in more than ten years, as Romanian airline Dan Air launched direct service between Bucharest and Damascus. The inaugural flight landed in the Syrian capital with 138 passengers, including Syrian government officials, signalling a cautious step toward normalising civil aviation ties severed by years of conflict and sanctions.

Access to Binance as sanctions ease

Syria has regained access to global cryptocurrency markets after Binance, one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, launched operations in the country following the easing of U.S. and EU sanctions. The platform announced on Thursday that Syrian users can now trade digital assets, including Bitcoin. The development comes after the U.S. lifted key economic sanctions on May 23, followed by the European Union removing its restrictions shortly after.

Syria open to peace with Israel during meeting with U.S. religious figures

Qatar’s Amir condemns Israeli strike

Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani held a phone call on June 14, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. During the call, the Amir reaffirmed Qatar’s strong condemnation of the recent Israeli strike on Iranian territory, calling it a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty and international law. He also emphasised the importance of de-escalation and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions to achieve lasting peace in the region.

Iran tells Qatar it won’t negotiate under fire

Iran has informed Qatari mediators that it will not engage in ceasefire or nuclear deal negotiations while under attack, according to a source familiar with the talks, reported by PressBee . The message, also conveyed to Oman, makes clear that Tehran will only consider diplomatic discussions, whether related to a truce with Israel or the revival of the nuclear agreement with the U.S. after it completes its military response to recent Israeli strikes.

Qatar to support the establishment of Islamic medical school

Ghana’s Minister for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has requested support from the Qatar Education Foundation to establish an Islamic Medical School in the Northern Region. Mr. Iddrisu made the appeal during a meeting in Accra with Qatar’s Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Mesallam.

Qatar and France deepen bilateral ties

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, co-chaired the third Qatar-France Strategic Dialogue in Paris on June 12. The meeting reviewed progress made since the Amir of Qatar’s state visit to France in February 2024, highlighting new cooperation across security, defence, economy, trade, investment, and education. Both nations reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations and committed to further expanding their strategic partnership.

Philippines' wellness and tourism industry drives real estate growth

The Philippines’ wellness market grew 21% to $43.3 billion in 2023, now accounting for 9.9% of GDP, per the Global Wellness Institute. Ranked 8th in Asia Pacific and 23rd globally, the sector is attracting tourists and investors. Manila is emerging as a "playground city," blending luxury real estate with lifestyle offerings, while branded residences from groups like The Ascott Limited are reshaping hospitality and real estate.

Treasury sanctions Philippines-based company for cyber scams

The Treasury Department sanctioned Funnull Technology Inc. , a Philippine company tied to “pig butchering” crypto scams, citing over $200 million in U.S. victim losses. The department also sanctioned Burma’s Karen National Army and proposed restrictions on Cambodia-based Huione Group for similar scams. Crypto crime losses surged 66% in 2024 to $9.3 billion, highlighting the need for urgent policy action.

Fortinet survey reveals Philippines’ cybersecurity under siege

Fortinet reports a surge in sophisticated cyber threats in the Philippines and Asia Pacific, driven by attackers using AI to scale stealthy, fast-moving attacks. New threats include deepfake BEC, AI-powered social engineering, and polymorphic malware, with only 9% of Philippine firms feeling fully prepared. Traditional ransomware and phishing remain prevalent, but stealthy threats like unpatched systems and cloud misconfigurations now pose even greater risks.

Dubai Chamber boosts trade with the Philippines

Dubai Chamber of Commerce hosted 180 business meetings in Manila as part of its New Horizons initiative, fostering ties with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce.

Ghana cedi rebounds to ¢12.33 against the US dollar

The Ghanaian cedi has rebounded sharply, now trading at ¢12.33 to the US dollar, per Bank of Ghana data. This recovery follows a nearly 25% year-to-date depreciation and is attributed to strong central bank interventions and improved dollar inflows from exports. At the interbank level, the cedi buys at ¢12.3138 and sells at ¢12.3262. It also gained against the British pound (¢16.32) and the euro (¢13.72). The central bank cited stabilising market conditions but stressed the need for continued vigilance. Favourable gold export prices and disciplined fiscal policies are key to sustaining the trend, as Ghana continues debt restructuring talks.

Ghana and Afreximbank in dispute over $768m debt

Ghana, emerging from a major debt restructuring, is now in a dispute with Afreximbank over a $768.4 million loan. Ghana wants the loan restructured like its other debts, but Afreximbank insists it holds “preferred creditor status” and should be repaid in full. The disagreement could delay Ghana’s debt resolution and set a precedent for how regional lenders are treated in future restructurings across Africa. Ghana’s Finance Ministry rejects Afreximbank’s claim, saying its debt is not senior to others. Similar issues have complicated debt talks in countries like Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Ghana Integrity Initiative targets local communities in anti-corruption drive

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), in partnership with CDD-Ghana and GACC, and with EU funding, organised a two-day capacity-building workshop for citizen groups in Akuapem North Municipality. The training focused on the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, and aimed to empower participants to combat corruption in their communities. GII’s Programs and Research Officer, Mr. Jacob Tetteh Ahuno, highlighted the importance of collective action and the need to mobilise civil society in the fight against corruption. He urged participants to raise awareness through outreach in schools, churches, mosques, and markets. The workshop, themed “Citizens Anti-Corruption Training,” is part of the EU-funded “Strengthening Accountability, Rule of Law, and Institutional Responsiveness in Ghana” project. Attendees included representatives from churches, PWDs, NCCE, CHRAJ, GHABA, traditional leaders, and the media.

UK trade envoy visits Ghana to strengthen economic ties

The British High Commission in Accra has announced that Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the UK’s Trade Envoy to Ghana, will make her first official visit from 19–22 May 2025, with engagements in Accra and Kumasi. Appointed in January by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ribeiro-Addy’s visit underscores the UK’s commitment to deepening trade relations and economic cooperation with Ghana. She will meet with key stakeholders, including Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak, traditional leaders, academics, UK businesses, and the GIPC. Discussions will focus on trade expansion, investment, and mutual economic growth.

Ghana's cocoa faces EU ban over heavy metal contamination – Dutch envoy

Ghana risks having its cocoa rejected by the European market due to contamination from heavy metals, warns Jeroen Verheul, Dutch Ambassador to Ghana. He attributed the threat to illegal mining activities, which not only reduce cocoa production but also pollute water sources that could affect cocoa beans. Verheul noted that some farmers are accepting large sums from gold prospectors to give up their cocoa farms, further worsening the decline. Ghana’s cocoa output has dropped significantly in recent years, posing a direct threat to trade, especially with the Netherlands, which imports about 300,000 metric tonnes of cocoa annually. Speaking to The Ghanaian Times , he emphasised the urgent need to address "Galamsey" and protect Ghana’s cocoa industry.

Belarus and Zimbabwe presidents to hold talks on bilateral cooperation and investment projects

On May 14, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko will meet with Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who arrived in Belarus on May 11 for a working visit, according to Belarusian media reports. The talks will focus on bilateral cooperation and the progress of current and future projects in trade, economy, and investment. President Mnangagwa is also scheduled to visit several enterprises and key locations in Belarus.

Iran and Zimbabwe to hold 9th joint economic commission meeting in Tehran

On the occasion of Zimbabwe’s National Day, Iranian Minister of Labour Meydari announced that the 9th interim meeting of the Iran-Zimbabwe Joint Economic Commission will be held in Tehran to enhance bilateral cooperation. He noted that ongoing coordination by the Iranian and Zimbabwean embassies is expected to facilitate the implementation of existing memoranda of understanding. Meydari congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwean ambassador to Tehran on the country’s 45th independence anniversary.

Zimbabwean ministers offer conflicting views on state of public healthcare system

Zimbabwean officials maintain that the country’s public healthcare system is functioning adequately, despite public complaints and critical reports from non-governmental organisations. Deputy Health Minister Sleiman Kwidini told parliament that citizens are satisfied with services, claiming improvements have been ongoing since 2018. His remarks followed a public appeal by Youth Minister Tinomuda Machakaire, who used social media to urge President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene and address what he described as a deteriorating healthcare system. The contrasting statements have sparked national discussion over the government’s awareness of on-the-ground conditions in public health facilities.

Putin holds bilateral talks with African leaders following Victory Day Parade

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa was part of several international figures present in Moscow during the May 9 Victory Day Parade. China's Xi Jinping, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré were some of the notable figures hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to reports , Putin held bilateral discussions with President Mnangagwa and also discussed economic, security, and political cooperation with Burkina Faso’s President Traoré.

Malaria cases in Zimbabwe rise by 180% in early 2025

The Zimbabwean government has reported a 180% increase in malaria cases during the first 17 weeks of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 21,309 to 59,647 cases. Malaria-related deaths also rose by 218%, from 45 to 143, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The ministry cited environmental and behavioural factors as key drivers. Increased rainfall, humidity, and temperatures have created ideal mosquito breeding conditions. Simultaneously, greater participation in outdoor activities such as artisanal mining, farming, tobacco curing, and cross-border trading—often during mosquito-active hours—has heightened exposure.

Iran rejects reported U.S. plan to rename Persian Gulf

Iran has formally condemned reports that U.S. President Donald Trump may refer to the Persian Gulf as the "Arabian Gulf" or "Gulf of Arabia" during his visit to Arab states. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that any such move would be seen as a hostile act and would provoke strong backlash from the Iranian public. Araghchi emphasised that the name "Persian Gulf" is historically established and politically neutral, warning that efforts to change it are politically motivated and unacceptable.

Iran retains world’s lowest gasoline prices

Iran continues to offer the world’s cheapest gasoline at IRR15,000 per litre ($0.018), according to Global Petrol Prices data released on May 8. Despite leading in low petroleum prices, the country faces economic pressure due to a sharply devalued rial and limited fiscal space. Government efforts to raise fuel prices risk triggering public unrest, as seen during past protests. Iran’s subsidised fuel costs remain less than one-third of Saudi Arabia’s rate of $0.62 per litre — the lowest among G20 nations.

Israel issues direct warning to Iran following Houthi attack

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, issued a warning on Thursday, May 8, indicating that Iran will be held directly accountable for attacks by its regional proxies. The statement followed a recent assault on Ben Gurion Airport by Houthi rebels, a group backed by Iran. Katz stated that the proxy strategy employed by Iran is over, asserting that Iran will face the same consequences as groups such as Hezbollah in Beirut, Hamas in Gaza, and the Assad regime in Damascus. He emphasised Iran’s direct responsibility for financing and arming the Houthis, declaring that similar retaliatory measures could be taken against Tehran.

U.S. sanctions third Chinese refinery over Iranian oil purchases

The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on China’s Hebei Xinhai Chemical Group and three companies operating a port terminal in Dongying, Shandong province. The entities were sanctioned for purchasing or facilitating the delivery of Iranian oil valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars. This marks the third Chinese independent refinery, known as a “teapot,” sanctioned by the Trump administration under its renewed “maximum pressure” campaign. The policy seeks to block Iran’s oil export revenues to influence nuclear negotiations and limit Tehran’s support for militant groups in the Middle East.

India, Iran discuss bilateral ties and security concerns

India and Iran convened the 20th Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) to review and advance bilateral cooperation . The meeting coincided with the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. During the discussions, India informed Iran of Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that both sides examined a wide range of topics, including trade, agriculture, healthcare, cultural exchange, connectivity, and people-to-people ties. Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Abbas Araghchi, on his first visit to India since taking office in August 2024, held meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, President Droupadi Murmu, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. His visit followed a prior trip to Pakistan.

Brazil could boost exports of up to 180 products to five EU countries if the long-delayed Mercosur-EU trade deal is ratified, a government agency has said . The Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) said the gains would mainly come from agricultural and industrial goods, while separate global trade tensions could also open new opportunities for Brazilian crude oil and other exports.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has entered into a significant agreement to support United Solar Polysilicon (USP) in the establishment of a $1.6 billion polysilicon manufacturing plant in Sohar Port, Oman. This facility is set to have an impressive output capacity of 100,000 tonnes annually. According to Zawya , the project is in the installation phase, having recently secured a substantial investment of $156 million from Future Fund Oman in October 2024, shortly after the foundation stone was laid in March. In addition, the IFC has announced a sustainable loan of up to $120 million aimed at aiding Oman’s National Finance Company in financing sustainable projects across retail, SMEs, clean transport, renewable energy, and efficiency initiatives.

Oman to showcase cultural heritage through Manga at Expo 2025 Osaka

Oman is set to present its rich cultural heritage at Expo 2025 in Osaka with a unique manga magazine that tells a captivating story of historical significance, symbolising its role as a bridge between diverse civilizations. Muscat Daily reports that the initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, features eight Omani artists who have created a graphic novel that follows the journey of a Japanese student exploring Oman's vibrant culture, historical landmarks, and unique traditions. Key locations such as the aflaj irrigation systems, forts, and the bustling Muttrah Souq are intricately woven into the narrative, aiming to engage younger audiences and promote cultural dialogue by merging traditional Omani heritage with contemporary artistic expressions.

Oman signs military systems deal with Spanish company 'INDRA'

Oman’s Ministry of Defence, represented by Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Zaabi, has formalised a partnership with the Spanish firm INDRA to procure specialized military systems and advanced technical equipment.
Iran says next round of "indirect" talks with U.S. to move from Oman, format unchanged

On the diplomatic front, Iran has announced that the forthcoming round of “indirect” negotiations with the United States concerning its nuclear programme will take place outside of Oman, although the overall negotiation format and Oman’s mediation role will remain intact. Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, indicated that the specific location holds less significance compared to the overarching framework of the discussions, with reports suggesting that Rome could serve as a potential venue, Xinhua reports. Furthermore, Baghaei reiterated Iran's stance against direct dialogue with Washington, underlining the effectiveness of indirect negotiations in reaching diplomatic resolutions.

Oman recognises Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Oman officially endorsed Morocco's 2007 Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara during the visit of Foreign Minister Badr Bin Hamad Ben Hamoud Al Busaidi. This endorsement positions Oman among more than 100 nations, including the United States and France, that recognise and support the plan. Atalayar reports that the announcement was made during the seventh joint commission meeting held with Moroccan officials, where both countries entered into several agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in areas such as transport, renewable energy, sports, and digitalization. Furthermore, Oman has plans to open consulates in key Moroccan cities, Dakhla and Laayoune, a move considered contentious by Algeria, which views this recognition as a significant deviation from Oman’s traditional alliances.

The ambassador, Mohammad Rahim Peerzada, was reported by women in Spain’s Afghan community. One woman said he raped her after drugging her drink while others accused him of trying to assault them.

Spain’s government decided to remove his diplomatic status after pressure from the Afghan community, local reports say.

The country’s foreign ministry told The Telegraph ,

“This person does not represent any official delegation, is not accredited in Spain, and does not enjoy diplomatic immunity in our country.”

A court in Madrid had ruled in September that it could not investigate him because of diplomatic immunity. It is unclear if the case will now be reopened.

One of the women, using the name Anis, told German newspaper Die Welt that she met Peerzada at an embassy event for International Women’s Day in 2022.

He promised to help her find a job. She said they later went to a bar, where he spiked her Coca-Cola. The next thing she remembered was waking up in a hotel room, where she said he raped her.

Another woman told Spanish newspaper El País that Peerzada forced himself on her at his apartment. She said she managed to push him away and leave.

Peerzada was appointed Afghanistan’s consul in Madrid in early 2021. Later that year, when the Taliban took over Kabul, he became the head of the Afghan mission in Spain.

The Afghan embassy in Madrid has not responded to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, Peerzada has denied all the allegations.

This follows a previous visit in April 2024, where 27 agreements between Iraq and Turkiye were signed.

Arrests

Fifteen people have been arrested in Turkey following a devastating fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Kartalkaya ski resort that killed 78 and injured dozens. Investigations revealed the hotel lacked essential fire safety measures. India Today reports that the fire, which started in the restaurant, forced guests to jump from windows during the night. Calls for accountability and reform are rising, with the hotel management cooperating with authorities. The judicial proceedings continue against the hotel's owner, manager, and other officials. President Erdogan stated that efforts are underway to punish those responsible for the tragedy.

Safe air travel

A Turkish Airlines flight (TK612) from Uganda's Entebbe International Airport to Istanbul returned safely to Entebbe after concerns arose over safety. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) confirmed all 269 passengers were unharmed, noting that the plane circled for over three hours to reduce fuel for a safe landing. The specific safety issue was not disclosed, Mid-Day news reports, but it was emphasised that the actions taken were standard aviation safety procedures.

Trail repairs

The Turkey Mountain paved trail in Tulsa will be closed from February 3 to April for repairs to a sewage line beneath it. The River Parks Authority announced there is no detour available during this closure, Fox23 reports.

President uses brother’s private jet

President John Mahama’s recent use of his brother, Ibrahim Mahama’s private jet for an official trip to Senegal and The Gambia has sparked controversy. According to Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the President’s acting spokesperson, this decision stems from an ongoing review of the presidential aircraft by the Communications Squadron of the Ghana Air Force. Speaking on Saturday, January 18, 2025, Ofosu Kwakye emphasised that the arrangement imposes no financial burden on the state. “The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not in any way, shape, or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime,” he stated in an interview with TV3, as reported by Graphic Online .

President visits troops in The Gambia

On his first international trip since his inauguration, President Mahama paid a visit to Ghanaian troops deployed with the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) on Friday, January 17, 2025. The visit included discussions with Gambian officials on security cooperation and bilateral relations. Graphic Online reports that during his address to the troops, President Mahama lauded their professionalism and dedication to maintaining peace and security. He also reaffirmed Ghana’s support for The Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission to address past injustices and strengthen institutional frameworks.

Rise in respiratory infections

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has raised concerns about an alarming increase in acute respiratory infections, particularly those linked to Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV). The infections, which have surged in China and other Northern Hemisphere regions since late December 2024, are attributed to seasonal spikes rather than a novel outbreak, Daily Guide Network reports. A World Health Organisation (WHO) risk assessment released on January 7, 2025, noted that such increases are common during winter. In response, Ghanaian health authorities convened at the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre to evaluate the situation and reinforce public health measures.

Fuel prices increment

The second pricing window for January has brought slight fuel price hikes at some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). GOIL, a state-owned OMC, increased petrol prices from GH₵14.99 per litre to GH₵15.74, while diesel rose from GH₵15.60 to GH₵15.77. Shell followed suit, adjusting petrol prices from GH₵15.30 per litre to GH₵15.59 and diesel from GH₵15.66 to GH₵15.79. These adjustments are attributed to rising global crude oil prices and the depreciation of the cedi. At the current exchange rate of approximately GH₵14 to USD$1, petrol at GOIL now costs around $1.26 per litre, CitiNewsRoom reports

Senior High School food crisis

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has attributed the food crisis in Ghana's Senior High Schools to financial mismanagement, not a food shortage. Speaking on The Big Issue on January 18, 2025, Asare emphasised the need for improved cash flow coordination between the Ministries of Finance and Education. He identified delayed payments to suppliers, especially smaller ones, as the root cause, urging financial reforms to prevent future shortages and ensure the success of the free SHS program.

Isabel dos Santos hits out over UK's 'dirty money' sanctions

Isabel dos Santos, once Africa's richest woman, has criticised the UK for imposing sanctions on her due to allegations of corruption, claiming she has not been found guilty of any crime. The UK government labelled her a "notorious kleptocrat" and enforced an asset freeze and travel ban based on accusations that she embezzled at least £350 million from Angola. According to the BBC , Dos Santos asserts that the actions against her are politically motivated and lack due process, emphasising that she has been targeted as part of an anti-corruption drive by Angola's current leadership, which she accuses of betraying her father's legacy.

Egypt-Jordan relations

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II convened in Cairo, focusing on critical regional challenges and the reinforcement of bilateral relations. Their discussions prominently featured the ongoing situation in the Palestinian territories, advocating for an immediate ceasefire alongside unrestricted humanitarian assistance. Dailynews reports that the leaders underscored their solidarity in pursuing a two-state solution that aligns with the boundaries set forth on June 4, 1967, as well as expressing a unified stance on maintaining Syria's territorial integrity and fostering an inclusive political resolution that represents all societal segments. Furthermore, they addressed Lebanon's security landscape, underscoring the necessity to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, thus reflecting a concerted commitment to fortify cooperation between Egypt and Jordan across a spectrum of sectors.

Lumber imports

In the realm of economic indicators, September 2024 witnessed a 3% decline in the average price of lumber imports into Egypt, juxtaposed with a notable 23% increase in the volume of these imports, Lesprom indicates. This presents a significant trend in the construction and building materials sector, warranting further examination of the implications for domestic markets and international supply chains.

D-8 summit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is slated to represent Iran at the D-8 summit scheduled in Egypt. Jpost reports. This gathering comprises eight leading Muslim developing nations and serves as a platform to discuss collaborative approaches and shared interests amongst member states, reflecting the geopolitical dynamics at play within the region.

Asylum Law

Human Rights Watch has raised substantial concerns regarding Egypt's newly drafted asylum law, which reportedly threatens the rights of refugees and asylum seekers by potentially contravening international standards. According to Human Rights Watch , the legislation, which was passed by parliament on November 19, 2024, proceeded without sufficient engagement with the UN Refugee Agency or input from civil society, casting doubt on its compliance with international law. The law is critiqued for its ambiguous stipulations that may arbitrarily deny asylum and criminalise informal assistance, alongside transferring authority from the UNHCR to a nascent national body with overly broad exclusionary criteria. It does outline some rights for acknowledged refugees, yet it inadequately safeguards asylum seekers' rights, lacking essential procedural protections. Human Rights Watch has urged President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to reconsider the bill, advocating for revisions that align with established international norms.

Industrial and mining sectors

In further developments, Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly engaged in discussions with Saudi Minister Bandar Alkhorayef, centring on the enhancement of bilateral cooperation, particularly within the industrial and mining sectors. Prime Minister Madbouly articulated Egypt's commitment to assisting Saudi Arabia in preparation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, aiming to foster participation from Egyptian enterprises. Additionally, he emphasised the prospective increase in Saudi investments in Egypt through collaborative mechanisms facilitated by the Egyptian-Saudi Higher Coordination Council. The Prime Minister also highlighted the need for elevated cooperation in mineral exploration, as well as extending invitations to Saudi investors in the oil, gas, and petrochemical realms, underlining the government’s dedication to mitigating investor challenges. Minister Alkhorayef reciprocated the enthusiasm for collaboration, commending measures to address the concerns of Saudi investors, and thereby reinforcing the mutual interests in industrial integration across diverse sectors. According to the Dailynewsegypt , the meeting epitomised a pivotal step in fortifying strategic cooperation and expanding bilateral trade between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The docking of the USS Savannah in Sihanoukville is significant as the first American military visit to the country in eight years.

The warship docked just 30 kilometres from a Chinese-renovated naval base that has raised concerns in Washington.

The ship’s commanding officer, Daniel A. Sledz, said it was “great to be back” and hoped the visit would strengthen ties between the two nations. Cambodian officials welcomed the US crew and said the visit aimed to promote friendship and cooperation. This comes after years of deteriorating relations between Phnom Penh and Washington.

Meanwhile, China has been funding upgrades to Cambodia’s Ream naval base, which the US fears could be used for Beijing’s military. Cambodian leaders have denied these claims, but China’s presence in the region remains a concern.

The tools are part of some 3,500 archaeological artefacts returned to Ethiopia by the European country. These items which include two stone axes and a stone cutter were samples of excavations from the prehistoric site Melka Kunture near Addis Ababa.

French researcher Jean Chavaillon led the excavations decades ago.

“This is a handover, not a restitution, in that these objects have never been part of French public collections,” Laurent Serrano, a culture adviser at the French Embassy was quoted .

The tools were stored at the French Embassy in Ethiopia since the 1980s but have been returned to Ethiopia’s Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

The remaining 3,500 artefacts from the site will be handed over to the Ethiopian Heritage Directorate soon.

The move is indicative of the long-standing partnership in archaeology and palaeontology that France and Ethiopia have shared over the years.

French Foreign Minister Barrot said the artefacts are “samples of nearly 3,500 items” that highlight the rich history of Ethiopia.

Trade relations

Pakistan is strengthening trade ties with Uzbekistan as part of its broader investment strategy in Central Asia. Recently, officials from both nations discussed enhancing business opportunities, following a $1 billion trade agreement signed in February 2023. The Pakistani Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, praised Uzbekistan's infrastructure, particularly its railway system, and highlighted the potential for collaboration in religious tourism, agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals. Recent direct flights between the two countries have shown promise, and Khan proposed partnerships with local airlines and plans for a business forum during an upcoming official visit.

US sanctions

The US Department of the Treasury has sanctioned three former officials in Uzbekistan for severe human rights violations , specifically sexual crimes against girls at a state-run orphanage. The sanctions, announced on December 2, include Yulduz Khudaiberganova, the orphanage's former director, and two officials, Aybek Masharipov and Anvar Kuryazov, who are accused of human trafficking and gender-based violence. These individuals were implicated in abusing orphaned girls through coercion and exploitation, with Khudaiberganova forcing minors into sexual acts.

Mining

Uzbekistan has announced plans to enhance its mining and metallurgical industries by 2025, aiming to modernize infrastructure, boost production, and attract foreign investments. Further details on specific initiatives or investments have not been disclosed.

Bilateral trade

Uzbekistan and Russia have set a strategic goal to boost bilateral trade to $30 billion from 2024 to 2030. During a working group meeting, Uzbekistan's Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade, Laziz Kudratov, discussed measures to enhance cooperation in trade, industry, energy, transportation, and agriculture. The next Intergovernmental Commission session will be held in Moscow later this year. Notably, trade between the two countries has increased by 20%, reaching $9.7 billion in the first ten months of 2023, with 68 new products added to Uzbekistan's exports.

Irrigation projects

Uzbekistan's president has approved major irrigation projects in collaboration with Chinese firms to enhance water supply and support sustainable agriculture in Bukhara, Namangan, Surkhandarya, and Kashkadarya regions. The projects, costing $160 million and $60 million respectively, will be financed through a loan from China's Export-Import Bank. Leading Chinese companies CITIC Construction and China CAMC Engineering will oversee the reconstruction efforts, which are set to begin in 2025. The government has allocated $9.3 million from local budgets as advance payments, with further budget adjustments to follow. These initiatives aim to improve irrigation efficiency and address sustainable water management in Uzbekistan’s agricultural sector.
