Population growth slows to 0.5% in Q3

Malaysia’s population reached 34.3 million in the third quarter of 2025, up from 34.1 million a year earlier, marking a slower growth rate of 0.5% compared with 1.6% in 2024, according to the Department of Statistics. Citizens made up 90.1% of the population, while non-citizens accounted for 9.9%. Live births fell 7.8% to 95,469, while deaths dropped 5.6% to 46,643. Chief Statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Malaysia’s declining fertility mirrors a global trend below the replacement level, warning it could challenge the nation’s demographic structure, economic growth, and social balance.

Malaysia reports over 3,000 sexual crimes against minors

Malaysia has recorded 3,093 sexual crimes involving minors from 2023 to October 2025, with 608 incidents occurring in schools, Deputy Minister M. Kulasegaran told Parliament. The cases included 1,760 in 2023, 1,041 in 2024, and 892 so far this year, leading to 3,601 arrests. To improve safety, the Education Ministry formed an Institutional Safety Reform Committee with police, UNICEF, and other partners to strengthen the Safe School Programme and conduct safety audits. The government also plans a National Child Data Centre to track juvenile sex offenders while ensuring privacy under the Child Act 2001.

Anwar says Malaysia must act fast to become regional chip hub amid AI boom

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysia to accelerate efforts to become a regional hub for semiconductors and digital technology as artificial intelligence reshapes the global economy. Speaking at the 2025 International Higher Education Islamic Studies Convention, he said mastering emerging technologies is vital for national growth and urged students, including those in Islamic studies, to explore opportunities in the semiconductor field. Anwar stressed the need for a clearly defined semiconductor policy and highlighted Malaysia’s political stability as key to swift implementation and stronger global partnerships, particularly with the US and China.

Malaysia ready to host Thailand-Cambodia talks after border tensions flare

Malaysia is prepared to host negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia amid renewed clashes along their shared border, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said. He noted that both countries had “lost confidence and trust in each other,” despite signing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord during the recent Asean Summit. Mohamad said Cambodia requested Kuala Lumpur as the venue, while Thailand also asked Malaysia to help preserve the ceasefire. Tensions resurfaced after Thai soldiers were injured by landmines, which Bangkok claimed were newly planted by Cambodian forces. However, Asean observers found no evidence the mines were recently laid.

Malaysia to launch essential list, localisation incentives to strengthen auto supply chain

Malaysia will introduce an essential list and localisation incentives to boost its domestic automotive supply chain and expand export opportunities for local vendors, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced at the Global Automotive Technology Expo 2025. The government is also aligning existing electric vehicle (EV) tax exemptions with local assembly operations, a policy shift aimed at deepening industrial participation and regional competitiveness. Zafrul said Perodua’s EV programme remains on track, while Proton has launched the e.MAS 5. Malaysia retained its position as Southeast Asia’s top vehicle market in early 2025.

US urged to rethink ties with Cameroon after reelection of ‘corrupt’ Biya regime

In a post on X, Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho criticised the “sham” reelection of President Paul Biya, saying his regime has only made life worse for those living in Cameroon — including Americans.

“The corrupt Biya regime in Cameroon hunts its political opponents, enables Wagner’s illicit activities, and has created conditions for jihadist groups like Boko Haram and ISIS to thrive and fuel the Anglophone crisis,” Risch wrote on November 4.

The US senator was referring to the Wagner Group, a Russian state-funded paramilitary organisation, and the Boko Haram, a jihadist militant group that has troops in Nigeria , Chad, Niger and Mali.

While Washington has had diplomatic ties with Youanda since 1960, Risch asserted that Cameroon “is not a US partner.”

“It’s time to reassess this relationship before the blowback gets worse,” he said.

A former French colony, Cameroon has always struggled with managing the divide between its Anglophone and Francophone regions.

This age-old conflict has caused separatist groups to mushroom, further intensifying the instability of the Central African country.

While criticisms of the 92-year-old Biya are not new, Risch’s comments are significant as the US has a formal allyship with Cameroon. Its president, Donald Trump , has also been keen on peacemaking during his second term.

In an archived page in the US Department of State Website, Cameroon was described as a “key” player in regional stability and a “regional partner in countering terrorism in the Lake Chad Region and anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Guinea.”

The two countries have had a bilateral investment treaty in place since 1986, and Washington has provided nearly $1.7 billion in foreign assistance since 2001.

Xi’s comment came during his first meeting with Trump in six years, which took place in the South Korean city of Busan on Thursday.

During the meeting, Xi acknowledged differences between the two powers, saying it was “normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then,” but added that Beijing and Washington “are fully able to help each other succeed and prosper together.”

Trump, in turn, described Xi as “a great leader of a great country” and said he believed the two sides would “have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time.”

The exchange came amid renewed tensions between Washington and Beijing, as Trump’s administration threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods starting November 1, following China’s restrictions on exports of rare earth metals.

The two sides have also clashed over the future of TikTok’s US operations, though officials have hinted at a “preliminary consensus” for a broader trade deal.

Trump ignored questions from reporters about his new nuclear weapons policy as the media were ushered out of the room. Earlier, he had posted online that the US would “start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis” with other countries, calling the move a reluctant but necessary step.

Xi, meanwhile, praised Trump’s “great contribution” to recent peace efforts, including the Gaza ceasefire and the resolution of border disputes in Southeast Asia .

“China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries,” Xi said, calling for cooperation to “accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world.”

Trump and Xi, heads of the world ’s two largest economies, began their meeting with a customary handshake before the press, with Trump expressing optimism that they were “going to have a very successful meeting.”

The two are expected to discuss issues that have strained US-China ties in recent months, including tariffs , semiconductor exports, rare earth metals, and the TikTok deal.

Trump quipped that Xi was a “very tough negotiator,” adding, “That’s not good.”

Joining Trump are key members of his delegation: US Ambassador to China David Perdue, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

It remains unclear whether military and defence matters are on the agenda, a critical question given that both nations command the world’s largest armed forces and possess some of its most advanced weaponry.

Trump, who returned to the White House in 2024, said he and Xi “know each other well,” as they already had prior encounters during his first term from 2017 to 2021.

Brazil's Lula suggests world may see 'surprises' when he meets with Trump next week: Video

Lula said the encounter would be a chance to clear the air after months of friction over tariffs and accusations from Washington, which had been critical of the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally.

“I hope that in a conversation between two heads of state, we put our problems and our differences on the table and begin to make decisions,” Lula told reporters in New York for the high-level debates.

The United States earlier slapped steep tariffs on Brazilian goods, with Trump citing threats to national security and foreign policy . The American president also accused Brasília of pursuing a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro — charges Lula dismissed as outside interference.

Despite that backdrop, Lula welcomed Trump’s earlier comments that there was “good chemistry” between them.

“What once seemed impossible stopped being impossible. And it happened,” Lula said.

He argued that Trump’s policies toward Brazil had been shaped by flawed information and suggested that once the U.S. leader heard directly from him, positions on both sides could shift. “In the same way, Brazil can also change its position,” Lula said.

The Brazilian president said his agenda with Trump would go beyond trade. He confirmed he intends to raise the war in Ukraine , stressing that both leaders maintain ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I know he is a friend of Putin. I am also a friend of Putin. So, if one friend can do a lot, two friends can do much more,” Lula said. “Maybe our chemistry can be taken to Putin and Zelensky? And we can build that unexpected way out. I think there could be surprises for the world .”

For months, Lula has promoted the participation of the Global South in peace initiatives regarding Ukraine, often in coordination with China and other BRICS+ countries. He framed the meeting with Trump as a potential opportunity to broaden those efforts.

He also injected humour into the discussion, noting that both leaders are entering their eighties. “There is no reason for kidding in a relationship between two 80-year-old men,” Lula quipped.

At the same press conference, Lula criticised what he called the passivity of the UN Security Council in the face of wars in Gaza and Ukraine. He argued that the institution had the authority to create Israel decades ago and now should act with equal resolve to establish a Palestinian state.

First parliamentary polls since Assad’s fall set for September

For the first time since the collapse of Bashar al‑Assad’s 14-year regime in December 2024, Syria will hold parliamentary elections from September 15 to 20. Voting will take place under an interim constitution to fill 150 assembly seats. Of these, 100 will be elected by provincial electoral colleges, while the remaining 50 will be appointed by interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa. The elections mark a crucial step in reestablishing a permanent government in Syria, which is still reeling from a 14-year civil war and the Assad family’s 53-year rule.

41% US tariff bad for rebuilding Syria — analysts

Despite limited trade ties with Washington, a rebuilding Syria is still expected to feel the pinch of the steep 41% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump, analysts said . Just over six months since the fall of the Assad government and the establishment of a transitional administration, Syria is seeking foreign direct investment — an option undermined by the new US tariff. Syria runs a trade deficit with the US: It exported $11.3 million worth of goods to Washington in 2023, while importing only $1.29 million in American products.

New Senate bill aims to keep US forces in Syria

A draft US Senate measure would bar further reductions to American troop levels in Syria without Pentagon certification that mission goals against ISIS remain intact. The provision follows White House-backed plans to consolidate forces at a single base in Hasakah. It comes amid stalled efforts to integrate Kurdish-led SDF forces into Syria’s national army and renewed clashes near the Tishreen Dam. The Senate is expected to vote on the $853 billion defence bill after its September recess.

Deepening Syria-UK ties post-Assad discussed in talks

British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on August 5, as London continued to step up its engagement with Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. According to state-run SANA, the two discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties and promote regional stability. In July, the UK announced the restoration of diplomatic ties with Syria after a 14-year break.

ISIS claims 3 new attacks on Syrian Democratic Forces

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for three separate attacks targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) across Deir Ezzor. The August 5 attacks in both the eastern and western countryside of Deir Ezzor left two fighters dead and four others injured. One of the attacks struck a diesel tanker, but casualties from that incident remain unconfirmed. SDF is a Kurdish-led military alliance that played a key role in the US-backed campaign to drive ISIS out of northeastern Syria.

Foreign tourists banned from newly opened beach resort

North Korea has barred foreign tourists from entering its newly opened Wonsan-Kalma beach resort, just weeks after promoting it as a world-class destination. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the state-run DPR Korea Tour website announced on July 18, 2025, that the resort would temporarily stop accepting foreign visitors, without giving reasons or a timeline. The ban comes shortly after Kim Jong-un hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov there on July 12, calling him the first foreign guest and signalling efforts to promote the site internationally. Lavrov reportedly pledged support to boost tourism. The multi-million dollar project, delayed by sanctions and the pandemic, finally opened on June 24. Domestic tourism officially began July 1, with state media hailing the resort as a “national treasure-level tourist town.” Kim praised it as one of North Korea’s greatest achievements of the year.

Russia causes alarm with official North Korea visit

Russia and North Korea are deepening their relationship during a three-day visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, aimed at aligning views on the Ukraine war. Lavrov’s visit follows an earlier trip by Russian security chief Sergei Shoigu, who confirmed that North Korea sent thousands of military workers and reportedly around 12,000 troops to support Russia. In return, concerns are rising that Kim Jong Un may seek advanced Russian military technology, potentially escalating his nuclear capabilities. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Lavrov on July 10 to discuss peace talks, though he noted that President Trump remains frustrated with Russia’s lack of flexibility.

The strange disappearance of the US-North Korea conflict

If you had fallen into a coma in early 2018 and awakened in 2025, you might be surprised by the silence surrounding the once-volatile US–North Korea conflict . Just a few years ago, tensions were at a boiling point. North Korea, seen by many in the West as unpredictable and hostile, was rapidly advancing its nuclear weapons program—conducting test explosions and missile launches while openly threatening the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. At the time, President Obama had warned his successor, Donald Trump, that North Korea posed a major security threat. The Trump administration adopted a hardline stance, signalling it was prepared for military intervention if necessary. Top officials labelled a nuclear-capable North Korea “intolerable,” and Trump famously vowed, “It won’t happen,” warning that any threats would be met with “fire and fury.”

North Korea is becoming increasingly isolated from the world

For years, experts and U.S. officials have stressed that North Korea’s human rights abuses must be addressed alongside its nuclear ambitions. The regime funds its weapons programmes through repression, forced labour, and cyber theft. The U.S. Congress recognised this in 2004 with the North Korean Human Rights Act, which prioritised human rights in diplomatic talks and authorised funding for independent media broadcasts and intelligence gathering. Though Congress renewed the law in 2008, 2012, and 2017, it lapsed in 2022. Despite this, funding has continued through the State Department’s human rights bureau. Ending this support would deprive the U.S. of vital insights as North Korea expands its global military presence and tightens control at home.

South Korea revives nuclear sub plans after North Korea’s progress

Facing increased threats from North Korea and Pacific tensions, South Korea is revisiting plans for nuclear-powered submarines to boost defence autonomy. On July 18, 2025, Foreign Minister nominee Cho Hyun announced plans to renegotiate the 123 Agreement with the U.S. to enable such development. Cho aims to revise the treaty to allow for nuclear sub capabilities, enhancing South Korea's deterrence and reducing reliance on the U.S. Navy. He noted that following internal review and U.S. coordination, the submarines may be introduced as part of a broader strategic upgrade.

Humanitarian aid from Panama arrives in Cuba

The arrival of medical supplies from Panama to Cuba, coordinated by Humberto Pérez and supported by numerous solidarity groups, has been seen as vital for alleviating shortages due to the US blockade, as stated by Dr Aldo Grandal of Cuba's Health Ministry.

The move signals India’s cautious re-entry into a sensitive regional equation shaped by nuclear tensions, sanctions, and North Korea’s close military links with Pakistan and China.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Longkumer’s appointment in a statement on June 17.

Aliawati Longkumer is a 2008-batch Indian Foreign Service officer from Nagaland. He has served in Indian missions in Qatar, Fiji, Germany, and Guatemala, and held roles in the UN and Pacific Division at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. He is currently the chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Paraguay and has been appointed India’s next ambassador to North Korea.

India shut down its embassy in Pyongyang in July 2021 due to COVID-19 disruptions but reopened the mission in December 2024 after extensive security and surveillance assessments. The last Indian ambassador to North Korea was Atul Malhari Gotsurve, Hindustan Times.

While India froze all trade with North Korea in 2017 to comply with United Nations Security Council sanctions targeting Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, it never formally cut diplomatic ties.

Strategic concerns, particularly over North Korea’s assistance to Pakistan’s missile development, have kept the relationship under scrutiny.

India has previously provided humanitarian aid to North Korea, including food and medicine, and hosted North Korean officials for technical training. Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh visited Pyongyang in 2018, the highest level of Indian visit in decades.

Panama Canal considers bitcoin payments for faster shipping

Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi proposed prioritising Bitcoin payments for Panama Canal transit fees at the Bitcoin 2025 conference. The canal, handling 5% of global trade, earned $5 billion from nearly 10,000 transits in fiscal 2024, despite drought-related caps. Mizrachi believes Bitcoin could streamline payments and attract tech-driven logistics firms, citing Panama’s current acceptance of Bitcoin for taxes. He’s seeking to expand this to canal fees without legislative approval, amid economic and geopolitical challenges. Former President Trump has called for regaining U.S. control of the canal, adding urgency to Panama’s modernisation efforts.

Chiquita Panama to lay off all workers as management exits

Chiquita Panama's management has left the country , and the company is seeking government approval to lay off remaining staff, the labour minister said. This follows the firing of 5,000 workers after a strike at a banana farm, which resulted in $75 million in losses. Thousands protested amid broader social issues, with President Mulino calling the strike illegal.

Panama denies involvement in enforcing Iran sanctions

Panama rejects claims by United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO Mark D. Wallace that it fails to enforce sanction s. Through its Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), the country has de-flagged over 650 ships since 2019 to uphold international standards, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Panama works closely with the U.S. government, sharing ship registry details to fight terrorism financing and illegal fishing. In 2019, Panama signed the Registry Information Sharing Compact with other maritime nations to notify members of ships involved in sanctionable activities. Recent actions include new ship-to-ship transfer rules and Executive Decree No. 512, empowering Panama to de-flag vessels linked to sanctions. So far, 214 ships and 12 million GT have been removed. Panama remains committed to international maritime conventions and continues its cooperation with the U.S.

Panama’s Bitcoin policy and global financial stability impact

Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi proposed allowing Bitcoin payments for Panama Canal tolls, stirring excitement and concern. Supporters argue it would streamline payments , reduce banking fees, and attract tech companies, transforming Panama into a digital hub. They also see Bitcoin as a tool to modernise the canal’s competitiveness in global trade. Critics, however, warn of Bitcoin’s volatility—a sudden price drop could hurt Panama’s revenue, which supports key services. They also fear regulatory backlash from countries wary of crypto’s ties to evading traditional finance. The debate: Can Bitcoin enhance trade or will it destabilise Panama’s economy?

Panama removes 650+ ships amid sanctions, tougher rules

Panama’s Maritime Authority has removed over 650 ships from its registry since 2019 to comply with U.S. sanctions and enforce stricter rules. Since last year, 214 ships have been withdrawn under new measures allowing faster action against violators. Panama responded to UANI’s criticism, which accused Panama of facilitating Iran’s oil trade and undermining sanctions. Panama says it shares information with other flag countries and enforces rules against ships that evade tracking.

Fortinet survey reveals Philippines’ cybersecurity under siege

Fortinet reports a surge in sophisticated cyber threats in the Philippines and Asia Pacific, driven by attackers using AI to scale stealthy, fast-moving attacks. New threats include deepfake BEC, AI-powered social engineering, and polymorphic malware, with only 9% of Philippine firms feeling fully prepared. Traditional ransomware and phishing remain prevalent, but stealthy threats like unpatched systems and cloud misconfigurations now pose even greater risks.

Brazil turns to China for green development support

Brazil is increasingly partnering with China to advance renewable energy and digital infrastructure. During President Lula’s recent state visit to China, he announced key agreements, including a $1 billion deal with Envision Group to produce sustainable aviation fuel and a partnership with Windey Energy to launch a renewable energy R&D centre. China also pledged $4.76 billion in additional investment. Lula highlighted the growing trade between the two nations, which has risen from $6.6 billion in 2003 to $160 billion today. As founding members of BRICS, Brazil and China continue to deepen their strategic ties.

Brazil renews tariffs and quotas on steel products

Brazil has renewed 25% tariffs on 19 steel products and extended the measure to four more, effective for another 12 months, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. The quota system on steel imports remains in place. Initially imposed in April 2023 to counter a surge of cheap steel, mainly from China, the tariffs exclude imports under trade agreements or special regimes.

Brazil mid-May consumer prices rise below expectations

Brazil’s consumer prices rose less than expected in mid-May, easing to 0.44%—below the 0.48% forecast—despite recent floods, IBGE reported. Annual inflation slowed to 3.70%, the lowest mid-month reading since October 2020, staying within the central bank’s target range. Food inflation was milder than feared, rising 0.26%, down from 0.61% in April. Analysts say the data support a continued rate-cutting cycle, although flood-related price pressures may still emerge in the coming months.

Argentina sends troops to secure crime-plagued border with Brazil

On May 26, 2025, Argentina launched Operation Guaçurarí , a six-month security campaign targeting a 25-km border stretch with Brazil plagued by drug trafficking and violence. The effort focuses on dismantling criminal networks, including Brazil’s PCC and Comando Vermelho gangs. The move follows a 400% rise in drug seizures and seven contract killings in 2023. Despite Brazil not being consulted, local mayors support the initiative. Federal forces will work with Misiones and Santa Catarina authorities, using drones and surveillance to monitor key routes. The operation is part of the wider Plan Roca military deployment across northern Argentina.

Brazil's budget missteps continue to unsettle investors

For the second time in six months, a Brazilian government plan to ease investor concerns backfired, sparking a market selloff and renewed doubts about President Lula’s commitment to fiscal discipline. A proposed tax hike on financial transactions, including a controversial 3.5% levy on offshore investments, triggered the backlash. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad quickly scrapped the offshore tax, denying any move toward capital controls. The episode revealed growing tension between markets and Lula’s administration, with investors questioning fiscal credibility despite a larger-than-expected budget freeze. Haddad, once seen as a stabilising force, moved ahead without central bank input, deepening the disconnect.

Anwar, this year’s ASEAN chair, is pushing for a joint meeting with President Trump to discuss tariff impacts, which range from 10% to 49% across member states. ASEAN has formed a task force to coordinate responses, while some members pursue bilateral talks. Anwar also highlighted Tuesday’s historic meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and the Gulf Cooperation Council, aimed at boosting regional cooperation. Leaders will unveil a 20-year plan for deeper integration. However, tensions remain with China over the South China Sea, with Philippine President Marcos Jr. urging a binding code of conduct. As ASEAN chair, Anwar has led renewed peace efforts, including recent meetings with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing and Myanmar’s shadow government. He emphasised that while progress remains fragile, “even a fragile bridge is better than a widening gulf.”

Hundreds of taxi and delivery drivers protested across Indonesia on Tuesday, demanding higher wages and opposing a potential merger between GoTo and Grab. In Jakarta, drivers in green jackets rallied near government offices, accusing companies of exploitative practices. Many earn just 100,000–150,000 rupiah ($6–$9) for 10–12 work hours. GoTo, which operates Gojek, welcomed driver feedback, but lowering fare commissions wasn't the answer. It confirmed receiving merger proposals but stressed no decision had been made.

Nicaragua arrests ex-mayors and ex-military in Ortega’s latest crackdown

Between 15 and 20 people—including former mayors and military officers—were arrested over the weekend in northern Nicaragua in what opposition groups call politically motivated raids. Among the detained are ex-mayors from the banned Citizens for Liberty party and a former military intelligence chief. The arrests follow a pattern of repression by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo since the 2018 protests, which left over 300 dead. Opposition media and exile outlets linked the raids to the recent detention of retired General Álvaro Baltodano, a former Ortega ally.

Legislature votes to end dual citizenship

Nicaragua’s National Assembly approved a constitutional amendment Friday to ban dual citizenship, potentially affecting thousands, including government critics. The reform, which must pass again in 2026 to take effect, was unanimously backed by the Sandinista-controlled legislature. Under the proposal, Nicaraguans who acquire another nationality would lose their citizenship, while most foreigners seeking Nicaraguan citizenship must renounce theirs, except Central Americans. The move follows the Ortega regime’s revocation of citizenship for over 400 people, including 222 deported to the U.S. in 2023.

$50b Panama Canal replacement

Elon Musk is reportedly backing a $50 billion canal project in Nicaragua aimed at creating a high-tech alternative to the Panama Canal. The proposed waterway, supported by a global investor consortium, reflects Musk’s push for futuristic infrastructure to ease global trade. Why rethink the Panama Canal? Despite its historic role since 1914, the canal struggles with congestion and can't accommodate the largest modern ships, even after expansions. Musk's vision: a more efficient, scalable route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Nicaragua shines at 2nd BRICS Women Entrepreneurs Forum

Nicaragua actively participated in the second day of the BRICS Women Entrepreneurs Forum held at Russia’s National Centre. Representatives from China, Malaysia, India, Brazil, Iran, Indonesia, and South Africa shared insights on creative industries, financing, and strategic alliances. Nicaragua highlighted its Creative Economy Model as a key strategy for fostering global cooperation in innovation and production. The forum also explored co-production models, infrastructure, and technological advancements, reinforcing the role of creative industries in economic growth.

Nicaragua welcomes Cameroon’s historic referendum

On May 19, 2025, the Government of Nicaragua extended warm greetings to President Paul Biya and the people of Cameroon in honour of the anniversary of the historic May 20, 1972, Constitutional Referendum. The message praised the Cameroonian people's democratic decision to establish a unified state and reaffirmed Nicaragua’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties based on solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect.

Ghana cedi rebounds to ¢12.33 against the US dollar

The Ghanaian cedi has rebounded sharply, now trading at ¢12.33 to the US dollar, per Bank of Ghana data. This recovery follows a nearly 25% year-to-date depreciation and is attributed to strong central bank interventions and improved dollar inflows from exports. At the interbank level, the cedi buys at ¢12.3138 and sells at ¢12.3262. It also gained against the British pound (¢16.32) and the euro (¢13.72). The central bank cited stabilising market conditions but stressed the need for continued vigilance. Favourable gold export prices and disciplined fiscal policies are key to sustaining the trend, as Ghana continues debt restructuring talks.

Ghana and Afreximbank in dispute over $768m debt

Ghana, emerging from a major debt restructuring, is now in a dispute with Afreximbank over a $768.4 million loan. Ghana wants the loan restructured like its other debts, but Afreximbank insists it holds “preferred creditor status” and should be repaid in full. The disagreement could delay Ghana’s debt resolution and set a precedent for how regional lenders are treated in future restructurings across Africa. Ghana’s Finance Ministry rejects Afreximbank’s claim, saying its debt is not senior to others. Similar issues have complicated debt talks in countries like Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Ghana Integrity Initiative targets local communities in anti-corruption drive

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), in partnership with CDD-Ghana and GACC, and with EU funding, organised a two-day capacity-building workshop for citizen groups in Akuapem North Municipality. The training focused on the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, and aimed to empower participants to combat corruption in their communities. GII’s Programs and Research Officer, Mr. Jacob Tetteh Ahuno, highlighted the importance of collective action and the need to mobilise civil society in the fight against corruption. He urged participants to raise awareness through outreach in schools, churches, mosques, and markets. The workshop, themed “Citizens Anti-Corruption Training,” is part of the EU-funded “Strengthening Accountability, Rule of Law, and Institutional Responsiveness in Ghana” project. Attendees included representatives from churches, PWDs, NCCE, CHRAJ, GHABA, traditional leaders, and the media.

UK trade envoy visits Ghana to strengthen economic ties

The British High Commission in Accra has announced that Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the UK’s Trade Envoy to Ghana, will make her first official visit from 19–22 May 2025, with engagements in Accra and Kumasi. Appointed in January by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ribeiro-Addy’s visit underscores the UK’s commitment to deepening trade relations and economic cooperation with Ghana. She will meet with key stakeholders, including Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak, traditional leaders, academics, UK businesses, and the GIPC. Discussions will focus on trade expansion, investment, and mutual economic growth.

Ghana's cocoa faces EU ban over heavy metal contamination – Dutch envoy

Ghana risks having its cocoa rejected by the European market due to contamination from heavy metals, warns Jeroen Verheul, Dutch Ambassador to Ghana. He attributed the threat to illegal mining activities, which not only reduce cocoa production but also pollute water sources that could affect cocoa beans. Verheul noted that some farmers are accepting large sums from gold prospectors to give up their cocoa farms, further worsening the decline. Ghana’s cocoa output has dropped significantly in recent years, posing a direct threat to trade, especially with the Netherlands, which imports about 300,000 metric tonnes of cocoa annually. Speaking to The Ghanaian Times , he emphasised the urgent need to address "Galamsey" and protect Ghana’s cocoa industry.

Kazakhstan is experiencing growing interest in ecotourism, with visitor numbers rising from 2 million in 2022 to 2.8 million in 2024 —a 40% increase, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Popular national parks near Almaty, including Ile-Alatau, Charyn, Altyn-Emel, and Kolsai Lakes, continue to attract visitors. To support sustainable tourism, infrastructure such as visitor centres, campsites, and glamping facilities is being developed across 14 parks. Eight modern visitor centres have already been opened, offering insights into ecosystems and promoting responsible travel. This ecotourism growth aids both conservation and local economic development.

Kazakhstan launches first national committee for International Volunteer Year 2026

Kazakhstan has become the first country to establish a National Organising Committee for the International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026. The committee was launched on 12 May 2025 in Astana, with participation from the government, civil society, private sector, and Toily Kurbanov, Executive Coordinator of UN Volunteers (UNV). The country played a key role in initiating the UN resolution proclaiming 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development. The new committee will lead national efforts, promote volunteerism across sectors, and align with the global IVY 2026 vision. “Kazakhstan is turning global promises into real, impactful actions,” said Kurbanov. The move sets a precedent for other nations to follow, as UNV continues supporting IVY 2026 implementation worldwide.

Kazakhstan advances $10 billion industrial projects in key sectors

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, chaired a meeting on major industrial projects aimed at strengthening the country’s export-oriented chemical and metallurgical sectors. Backed by President Tokayev’s directive, five projects totalling $10 billion in investment are underway, expected to create over 8,700 permanent jobs. In the Abay region, a copper smelting plant with a 300,000-tonne capacity is under construction, generating over 1,000 jobs. Karaganda’s $3.5 billion Qarmet modernisation project aims to boost coal and steel output and create 2,000 jobs by 2028. In Kostanay, a $1.2 billion hot-briquetted iron plant is being developed, focusing on eco-friendly metallurgy and 1,000 new jobs.

Kazakhstan, UAE seal $5 billion in deals at business forum

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the Kazakhstan-UAE Business Forum, reaffirming their commitment to deepen trade and investment ties. Tokayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s economic reforms aligned with OECD standards and introduced the Investment Board to support foreign investors, including those from the UAE. The forum resulted in commercial agreements worth around $5 billion across key sectors. The event featured sessions on digital tech, finance, urban development, and green economy, along with B2B meetings. The UAE delegation included major firms like Masdar, AMEA Power, and Abu Dhabi Ports Group. Tokayev expressed confidence in the successful execution of the signed agreements.

Masdar to develop major renewable energy projects in Kazakhstan

Abu Dhabi’s Masdar has announced plans to develop new renewable energy and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Kazakhstan, supporting the country's clean energy goals. Partnering with Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund, Samruk-Kazyna, Masdar will explore a 24/7 project to deliver up to 500 MW of baseload renewable energy and 2 GW of BESS capacity. The agreement was formalised in Astana in the presence of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Kazakhstan aims to generate 15% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and 50% by 2050. Masdar is already developing a 1 GW wind farm with 600 MWh storage—one of the region’s largest. Construction is set to begin in 2026. Masdar CEO Mohamed Al Ramahi called Kazakhstan a key strategic partner and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to energy security, economic diversification, and climate action.
During an official visit to Russia on May 10, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that a key objective of his bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin was to address Brazil’s trade deficit with Russia and explore opportunities in energy transition and critical minerals. President Lula noted that Brazil faces a trade deficit of approximately $11 billion within an annual trade flow of nearly $12 billion with Russia. He emphasised the importance of balanced trade, describing it as a two-way relationship based on mutual benefit. He also highlighted Russia’s role as a strategic partner in oil, gas, and small nuclear reactors, describing the latter as a promising technology for ensuring a long-term energy supply.

The move further strengthens economic ties between Brazil and China and follows the announcement of over $4.5 billion in planned Chinese investments across key Brazilian industries.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has entered into a significant agreement to support United Solar Polysilicon (USP) in the establishment of a $1.6 billion polysilicon manufacturing plant in Sohar Port, Oman. This facility is set to have an impressive output capacity of 100,000 tonnes annually. According to Zawya , the project is in the installation phase, having recently secured a substantial investment of $156 million from Future Fund Oman in October 2024, shortly after the foundation stone was laid in March. In addition, the IFC has announced a sustainable loan of up to $120 million aimed at aiding Oman’s National Finance Company in financing sustainable projects across retail, SMEs, clean transport, renewable energy, and efficiency initiatives.

Oman to showcase cultural heritage through Manga at Expo 2025 Osaka

Oman is set to present its rich cultural heritage at Expo 2025 in Osaka with a unique manga magazine that tells a captivating story of historical significance, symbolising its role as a bridge between diverse civilizations. Muscat Daily reports that the initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, features eight Omani artists who have created a graphic novel that follows the journey of a Japanese student exploring Oman's vibrant culture, historical landmarks, and unique traditions. Key locations such as the aflaj irrigation systems, forts, and the bustling Muttrah Souq are intricately woven into the narrative, aiming to engage younger audiences and promote cultural dialogue by merging traditional Omani heritage with contemporary artistic expressions.

Oman signs military systems deal with Spanish company 'INDRA'

Iran says next round of "indirect" talks with U.S. to move from Oman, format unchanged

On the diplomatic front, Iran has announced that the forthcoming round of “indirect” negotiations with the United States concerning its nuclear programme will take place outside of Oman, although the overall negotiation format and Oman’s mediation role will remain intact. Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, indicated that the specific location holds less significance compared to the overarching framework of the discussions, with reports suggesting that Rome could serve as a potential venue, Xinhua reports. Furthermore, Baghaei reiterated Iran's stance against direct dialogue with Washington, underlining the effectiveness of indirect negotiations in reaching diplomatic resolutions.

Oman recognises Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Oman officially endorsed Morocco's 2007 Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara during the visit of Foreign Minister Badr Bin Hamad Ben Hamoud Al Busaidi. Atalayar reports that the announcement was made during the seventh joint commission meeting held with Moroccan officials, where both countries entered into several agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in areas such as transport, renewable energy, sports, and digitalization. Furthermore, Oman has plans to open consulates in key Moroccan cities, Dakhla and Laayoune, a move considered contentious by Algeria, which views this recognition as a significant deviation from Oman’s traditional alliances.

Turkey seeks U.S. help to lead Syria rebuild, restrain Israel

Turkey is strategically repositioning its conflict dynamics with Israel, seeking negotiations with the United States instead of continuing confrontations in Syria. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has underscored that Syria should remain a sovereign locale for its people rather than a stage for international powers. Previously, Turkey offered to combat the Islamic State within Syria, tying this proposal to the cessation of U.S. support for Kurdish forces, which aligns with President Trump’s interests in reducing U.S. military involvement in the region, Haaretz reports.

 Mass protests continue

The political landscape in Turkey remains fraught, particularly as opposition leader Ozgur Ozel steers ongoing protests advocating for the release of jailed Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, viewed as President Erdogan’s significant adversary. Following Imamoglu’s detention on corruption charges perceived as politically motivated, large-scale protests have mobilised thousands, including university students. According to US News , Ozel has called for ongoing demonstrations and has emphasised the urgency for early elections ahead of the next scheduled general vote in 2028. A symbolic petition rallying for Imamoglu’s release has attracted over 7 million signatures, reinforcing his status as a viable presidential candidate.

Weight loss surgery goes wrong

British woman named Danielle Peebles has faced severe health ramifications following weight loss surgery in Turkey. Initially aimed at improving her health ahead of her grandson's birth, the operation resulted in paralysis from the neck down due to complications arising from nutritional neuropathy linked to vitamin deficiencies. Peebles, who had opted for the surgery amid prolonged NHS waiting times, experienced initial recovery but subsequently required hospitalisation upon her return to the UK. Despite grim diagnoses about her mobility, she has engaged in rigorous rehabilitation and managed to regain some movement, illustrating significant risks associated with overseas weight loss procedures, as a growing number of cases highlight severe post-operative complications as reported by NDTV .

Turkey holiday prices may drop as inflation hits tourism sector

Holiday prices in Turkey could fall as hotels aim to avoid a repeat of 2024’s low occupancy rates. Popular spots like Bodrum and Antalya saw fewer visitors last year as locals opted for cheaper trips to Greece. Some resorts even shut early to cut losses. Tourism expert Hamit Kuk warns that inflation and poor economic management continue to strain the sector, making it hard for businesses to manage rising costs, Express reports.

Israel strikes Turkish-scoped Syrian bases

Israel's recent air strikes on Syrian military installations, which Turkey considered for a proposed joint defence initiative, have heightened tensions between the two nations. These strikes targeted three air bases and underline Israel’s mounting concern over Turkey's military manoeuvres in the region, particularly given fears surrounding an increasing Islamist influence along its borders. Despite Turkey’s assurances to the U.S. regarding the non-aggressive nature of its military presence in Syria, Israel's actions suggest apprehension regarding possible Turkish military advancements, including the integration of Russian anti-aircraft systems. Hindustan Times reported that the strikes caused considerable damage and raised alarms about potential escalations in regional hostilities, prompting Turkish officials to denounce Israel's actions as a threat to regional stability while expressing a commitment to avoid direct military confrontation.

Cuban electricity mostly restored

Cuba’s electricity issues have mostly been resolved, with much of Havana reconnected by Sunday night, Reuters reports. A blackout that began Friday night—caused by a substation short—left over 10 million people without power, highlighting the strain on Cuba’s ageing, oil-dependent grid. It was the country’s fourth major grid collapse since October 2024. According to Travel Pulse Canada , Canada’s travel advisory warns visitors of ongoing power shortages, noting that while resorts have generators, outages may still affect service.

Project on climate change adaptation makes strides in Cuba

The “Mi Costa” project, led by Cuba’s Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment with support from national and international partners, aims to boost climate resilience along 1,300 km of Cuba’s southern coast through ecosystem-based adaptation. ACN reports that over an eight-year implementation period and 22-year operation, it covers 24 municipalities across seven provinces, offering training and workshops for officials and communities. The project focuses on climate adaptation, water and soil management, coastal ecosystems, and blue carbon initiatives in mangroves, seagrasses, peatlands, and more.

Trump administration orders deep cuts to Office of Cuba Broadcasting

President Trump ordered the shutdown of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which runs Radio and Television Martí, Spanish-language stations created under Reagan to promote democracy in Cuba. As reported by WPTV , the executive order also cuts back the U.S. Agency for Global Media and six other small agencies. Staff were placed on administrative leave, and the future of the Martí stations remains uncertain.

Cuban foreign minister visits Nigeria to strengthen bilateral ties

Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, is visiting Nigeria to strengthen bilateral ties in healthcare, education, agriculture, science and technology, and cultural exchange, according to a statement by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit highlights the long-standing relationship between the two nations, rooted in cooperation and shared history, including support for anti-apartheid and liberation movements. He is expected to meet with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, to discuss further collaboration, Arise TV reports.

Trump wants 30,000 migrants held at U.S. Base in Cuba

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a controversial proposal to detain up to 30,000 migrants at the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay, reigniting debate over the use of the remote military facility for immigration enforcement. According to reporting by CNN’s Patrick Oppmann , the plan would represent a dramatic expansion of the base's role in U.S. immigration policy. While Guantánamo Bay is most often associated with its detention facility for terror suspects, it has also been used in the past to house migrants — most notably during the 1990s Haitian and Cuban migration crises, when thousands were temporarily held at the base.

Infrastructural development

The Liberian government has allocated US$98 million in its Draft National Budget for FY 2025, focusing on critical development projects under the ARREST-Specific Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP), with a strong emphasis on infrastructure, particularly in the road sector. Key allocations include US$52.9 million for road rehabilitation and construction, with major projects such as the Saclepea-Zwedru highway continuing after delays. The "No Car Will Be Stuck" initiative received US$15 million to ensure year-round accessibility of roads, Front Page Africa reports.

Climate change

On November 26, Liberia, in partnership with the World Bank, launched the Climate Integration and Financing Office (CIFO) in Paynesville. According to the Daily Observer , this office aims to integrate climate change into national development, mobilise resources for climate-resilient projects, and enhance collaboration among government sectors and development partners. World Bank’s Country Manager for Liberia, Georgia Wallen, emphasised CIFO’s three key roles: coordinating climate initiatives across sectors, facilitating investment collaboration, and ensuring measurable impacts through climate budgeting. CIFO will help Liberia develop a cohesive climate finance framework while addressing a funding gap as the country currently needs $491 million by 2025 to implement its climate actions, significantly more than the current average of $112 million in annual climate finance.

Theft

Residents of Fiamah Market Junction in Sinkor, Monrovia, have accused officers from the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) of theft during a raid on November 23, 2024. The New Dawn reports that the operation aimed to locate a suspect named "Shelving Stick," but resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the confiscation of cash and phones from bystanders. Eyewitnesses reported that one detainee, Buffon, was physically assaulted by officers. Anger has boiled over in the community, with residents calling the actions of the LDEA unjust and demanding accountability from law enforcement. The LDEA has not responded to requests for comment.

Liberia-Sierra Leone relations

On November 21, 2024, Liberia's Director General of the Cabinet, Nathaniel T. Kwabo, met with Sierra Leone's John Somaliah to enhance regional cooperation and public service delivery. The meeting, part of President Joseph Boakai's state visit, focused on the Performance Management and Compliance System (PMCS) used in Sierra Leone to improve government accountability and efficiency. Kwabo expressed interest in adopting similar strategies for Liberia, Daily Observer reports. A key outcome was an agreement to organise study tours to enhance the skills of civil servants in both countries, promoting knowledge exchange.

Majority and minority blocs dispute

The Publishers Association of Liberia (PAL) supports the Supreme Court's call for a return to the status quo in the House of Representatives dispute between the majority and minority blocs. PAL expressed concern that the ongoing standoff is hindering legislative functions and governance. The association urged all parties to respect the Supreme Court's decisions and the rule of law while advising media outlets to avoid escalating tensions that could jeopardise state security and democracy. According to The New Dawn , this statement follows a court order mandating a return to pre-October 15 conditions, after the election of new House Speaker Richard N. Koon, replacing Fonati Koffa.

Economic partnerships are also evolving, as China vows to bolster Tanzania's tourism sector, targeting the attraction of 5 million tourists by 2025. This commitment includes significant investment in tourism infrastructure, which is critical as Tanzania seeks to enhance its global appeal amidst growing competition in the region. The establishment of the Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark Information Center is a noted initiative that embodies these efforts, aligning with broader cooperation frameworks such as the Belt and Road Initiative.

Tanzania attains 128% sufficiency without GMOs

Agricultural progress in Tanzania has reached a noteworthy 128% food sufficiency level, distinguishing the nation as a net exporter without resorting to GMOs. President Samia Suluhu Hassan's emphasis on sustainable farming practices aligns with global movements advocating against genetically modified crops. This strategy reflects a commitment to biodiversity and local agricultural systems, offering a model for other nations grappling with food security.

Bilateral cooperation

Indonesia and Tanzania are enhancing bilateral cooperation through initiatives discussed at the recent G20 Summit, focusing on energy, trade, and human resource development. The proposed preferential trade agreement and strengthened educational initiatives in the agriculture and oil sectors signify a commitment to mutual growth and South-South cooperation, further solidifying their international partnerships. Both countries remain vigilant in supporting humanitarian causes, emphasizing shared values in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.

Peru's President Dina Boluarte attended the virtual ceremony, which highlighted the port's role in boosting trade between China and South America .

The port, located about 80 kilometres north of Lima, is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Xi described it as the region’s "first smart and green port," emphasising its ability to cut shipping times by over ten days and reduce logistics costs by more than 20%. Boluarte called China a major contributor to Peru’s economic growth.

U.S. officials, however, have warned against unchecked Chinese investments. Brian Nichols, a senior U.S. diplomat, urged Latin American countries to ensure such projects respect laws and safeguard human rights and the environment.

The Chancay port will serve Peru and neighbouring nations, easing trade with Asia. Once fully operational, it is expected to handle up to one million containers in its first year, transforming the small fishing town into a major logistics hub.

Cultural heritage

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in Vietnam has approved a plan aimed at preserving the intangible cultural heritages of ethnic minorities, Viet Nam News reports. Led by the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS), this initiative will promote traditional cultural identities alongside tourism development in various provinces, including Lạng Sơn, Bắc Kạn, and Thừa Thiên Huế. Key activities include restoring traditional rituals, studying ethnic clothing, and documenting specific customs such as the Bỏ Mả Ceremony of the Cơ Tu People and the Rebana drum performance of the Cham ethnic group. Vietnam has 53 ethnic minority groups, comprising approximately 14% of the population.

Bilateral relations

During his official visit to the UAE, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and UAE President Zayed Al Nahyan agreed to elevate bilateral relations with the UAE to a comprehensive partnership, making the UAE Vietnam's first comprehensive partner in the Middle East. According to Tuoi Tre News , the two leaders emphasised mutual learning and cooperation, highlighting six priority areas including economic, trade, and investment ties, innovation, and labour exchanges. They committed to enhancing collaboration in various sectors such as renewable energy and agriculture, and discussed specific projects like establishing a financial centre in Ho Chi Minh City. PM Chinh also urged UAE support for maintaining peace in the East Vietnam Sea. Following their talks, a joint statement was released, and a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was signed, marking Vietnam's first free trade deal with an Arab nation. The UAE is Vietnam's largest export market in the Middle East, with significant investment presence in Vietnam.

Chilled meat sector growth

The chilled meat market in Vietnam shows significant growth potential, driven by the rise of modern supermarkets and increasing consumer awareness of healthier options. A report by RongViet Securities Corporation (VDSC) noted a 4.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the meat market from 2018-2023, primarily from beef, goat, and chicken, while growth is expected to slow to 4.1% from 2024-2028 due to saturation in pork and poultry consumption. Despite this, VietNam News reports that major companies are investing in the chilled meat sector as consumer preference shifts from hot to chilled meat, which is seen as healthier and more reliable. However, challenges persist, including entrenched habits of purchasing traditional hot meat and higher prices associated with chilled meat production. The competitive landscape also complicates profitability, as businesses face higher operational costs and price pressures.

Lobster exports

Vietnam's lobster exports to China have surged significantly, with nearly $206 million in sales during the first nine months of the year, South China Morning Post reports. September saw a 134% increase from August and a staggering 2,336% rise year-on-year. This spike reflects Chinese consumers' demand for high-end foods despite overall spending hesitance. Lower import costs from Vietnam, attributed to labour and shipping advantages, have also contributed to this trend. Factors aiding this growth include China's relaxed seafood import regulations and trade agreements, particularly under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. In 2019, Australia supplied over half of China's lobster imports.

Return of exiled Emperor’s belongings

Personal belongings of exiled Vietnamese Emperor Hàm Nghi (1871-1944) have been returned to Vietnam. Dr. Amandine Dabat, the Emperor's fifth-generation descendant, handed over items including a mother-of-pearl tea tray, smoking pipe, and a collection of Han-character books to the Vietnamese Embassy in Paris and the Việt Nam National Museum of Fine Arts. Viet Nam News reports that, the tea tray and books were donated to the Huế Monuments Conservation Centre, while the smoking pipe went to the People's Committee of Cam Lộ District, significant for its ties to the Cần Vương Movement against French colonial rule. Additionally, a painting by Hàm Nghi was gifted to the museum, with another painting previously donated in December 2022. The repatriation of these artefacts is seen as vital for heritage conservation and educating the younger generation about this patriotic figure. Hàm Nghi was the eighth emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty but reigned briefly before his exile.

Foreign visits

The Italian Minister of Labour and Social Policies, Marina Elvira Calderone, is scheduled to visit Tunis on November 4, 2024. This visit aims to enhance cooperation between Italy and Tunisia, focusing on the development of regular migratory routes, Nova News reports. This will benefit both the countries and migrant workers through the enhancement of their professional skillsets.

Saudi-Arabia-Tunisia relations

Saudi Arabia is poised to strengthen industrial cooperation with Tunisia through various joint ventures, as revealed by the Deputy Minister of Industry, Khalil bin Salamah. The emphasis will be on harmonising industrial policies rather than confining efforts to specific product manufacturing. This approach intends to establish a collaborative platform that spans multiple industries, including pharmaceuticals and automotive sectors, with potential expansions into phosphates and energy. Tunisia's Minister of Industry, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, underscored the nation’s distinctive mining resources and proficient workforce as attractive incentives for Saudi investment, particularly in the automotive components and pharmaceutical domains. Both parties stressed the necessity for deeper regional integration among Arab nations to fully exploit investment and cooperative prospects, the African Manager reports.

Trade and economic interconnections

Tunisia is making strides towards becoming a major trade hub in Africa, with ambitions to establish a trans-Saharan trade corridor that connects North Africa with sub-Saharan markets. During the "Regional Export Mornings" forum, Tunisia’s Minister for Trade introduced initiatives aimed at creating a "Libya-Tunisia-Africa" corridor, facilitating connectivity between Tunisia and Libya to landlocked nations such as Chad, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. This corridor is conceived to enhance trade and economic interconnections across the continent. Proposed plans involve the modernisation of customs procedures, the enhancement of the Easy Export programme, the revision of foreign trade laws, and the improvement of distribution networks to elevate export levels and attract investment. The Lybian Express reports that this initiative is part of Tunisia's comprehensive strategy to affirm its role as a pivotal player in regional trade.

Unemployment rates

The United Nations "World Social Report 2024" indicates a substantial increase in unemployment rates, with 22 countries registering at least a one percentage point increase from 2018 to 2023. Tunisia, classified as a lower-middle-income country, experienced a 2.3 percentage point rise in unemployment, ranking tenth among these nations. According to the African Manager , this alarming trend is attributed to several factors including the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflicts such as the Ukraine war, and climate-related calamities. Additionally, the report highlights a spike in food insecurity rates, with Tunisia recording alarming figures ranging between 20% and 30%, reflecting an urgent need for interventions.

Imprisonment

Tunisian commentator Sonia Dahmani has been sentenced to two years imprisonment due to her remarks regarding the treatment of sub-Saharan migrants within the country. Her sentencing falls under a contentious anti-fake news law, which critics argue is being exploited by authorities as a tool to quell dissent against President Kais Saied, who has intensified actions against his political adversaries since his assumption of office, ABC News reports.

$184.9 million in funding from IMF

Rwanda will receive $184.9 million in funding from the IMF, comprising $95.9 million from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility and $89 million from the Standby Credit Facility. This funding follows a review of Rwanda's implementation of these instruments, aimed at addressing climate shocks and balance of payment needs. Despite external challenges, Rwanda's economy shows resilience, with GDP growth projected at 8.3% for 2024, bolstered by strong performances in services and construction. Inflation remains stable within the central bank's target range, and the Rwandan Franc's depreciation has facilitated necessary external adjustments. While macroeconomic policies align with program objectives, the IMF noted slower-than-expected fiscal consolidation, leading to a rising public debt-to-GDP ratio.

Election of Pan-African Parliament representatives

Rwanda has elected three deputies and two senators to represent the country at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP). Deputies Diogene Bitunguramye, Aimee Marie Ange Tumukunde, and Jennifer Wibabara were elected on October 21, followed by Senators John Bonds Bideri and Pelagie Uwera on October 22. The PAP, established under the 1991 Abuja Treaty, aims to promote African participation in economic development and address continental challenges. Each member country is represented by five legislators, including at least one woman. The Rwandan representatives will serve a five-year mandate while continuing their national duties.

Former UK home secretary’s expenditure during Rwanda trip

James Cleverly's in-flight catering for a one-day trip to Rwanda last December cost £655 per person, totalling £9,803 for 15 people. The round trip, which included chartering a private jet for £165,561, was for Cleverly to sign a deportation deal amid concerns about Rwanda's safety. Cleverly, now the shadow home secretary, incurred additional catering costs totalling £22,324 during a July 2023 trip to multiple countries, with a £1,488 average per head. His successor, David Cameron, spent £20,809 on catering for trips in February 2024. Critics, including the UK’s Labour representatives, highlighted the inefficacy of the Rwanda scheme, pointing out that it failed to deter channel crossings despite the significant expenditure.

Bilateral Air Services Agreement with Liberia

Rwanda and Liberia have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation between the two nations. The agreement was formalised at the International Civil Aviation Organisation event in Kuala Lumpur on October 21, 2024. It will allow each country's airlines to operate scheduled flights, improving travel times and convenience, particularly for students and facilitating trade and tourism. Key commitments include maintaining high aviation safety standards and fostering economic collaboration.

Genocide survivors recount 1994 mass killings at a Paris trial

At a Paris trial, Rwandan genocide survivors recounted the horrific mass killings from 1994, where over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered. Angélique Uwamahoro, then 13, described walking through bodies to survive, while another survivor detailed the brutal methods of attacks. The accused, Eugène Rwamucyo, a former doctor, faces charges of genocide and crimes against humanity but denies wrongdoing. He allegedly spread anti-Tutsi propaganda and supervised mass graves. This trial is part of a series addressing the genocide in France, with another doctor recently convicted and sentenced. Rwamucyo could face life in prison if found guilty.

Peace corps training

In a remarkable stride reflecting the spirit of cooperation, Vietnam has recently extended a heartfelt welcome to its largest cohort of US Peace Corps volunteers. With 20 dedicated members arriving to bolster English education in high schools, the initiative is facilitated by a 2020 agreement between the two nations. According to Vietnam Net , these volunteers are expected to commence training in Hà Nội and HCM City, in December 2024, collaborating with local educators to enrich the English language skills of students. Their transformative work holds the promise of unlocking doors to brighter educational and employment opportunities, a vital foundation for future prosperity. Currently immersed in a 10-week training odyssey, the volunteers are mastering the Vietnamese language and teaching methodologies, marking a significant chapter in Peace Corps' five-year partnership, as both nations march towards the celebration of their 30th diplomatic anniversary in 2025.

With the theme for 2024 resonating as “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,” the gathering illuminated global aspirations for food accessibility. MARD Minister Le Minh Hoan passionately highlighted the agriculture sector's critical role in achieving food security. Meanwhile, FAO Representative Rémi Nono Womdim painted a hopeful picture, acknowledging Vietnam’s relative stability in food security compared to its neighbours—a testament to a national roadmap dedicated to ensuring equitable access to nutritious fare for all.

 Australia-Vietnam ties

The Australian Embassy hosted the Taste of Australia’s Big BBQ on October 17 at the majestic Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Vietnam Investment Review . This vibrant celebration of Australian cuisine served as a deliciously symbolic feast marking the elevation of diplomatic relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP)—a culinary homage to the growing friendship between Australia and Vietnam. Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski, like a thoughtful conductor, orchestrated a gathering where shared culinary traditions sang in unison, weaving cultural ties ever tighter. Chefs wielded their culinary magic, conjuring authentic Australian dishes paired with the finest wines, the evening alive with laughter and flavours that danced upon the palate, underscoring the essence of mutual aspirations and cooperation that bind the two vibrant nations.

 Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia relations

In a spirit of brotherhood radiating from Vientiane, Vietnam's National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn met with his counterparts from Laos and Cambodia during the illustrious gathering of the 45th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Vietnam News reports. Amidst the warm embrace of solidarity, they extolled Laos' forthcoming role as ASEAN Chair in 2024 and reinforced the significance of unity among their nations. The dialogue transcended mere words, cultivating a rich dialogue on cooperation spanning defence, economy, and cultural exchanges. Their commitment to parliamentary collaboration was as steadfast as the ancient mountains, with plans blossoming for a regular working breakfast mechanism, a setting for continuous engagement aimed at fortifying socio-economic development and national security. Together, they painted a vibrant canvas of collaboration and camaraderie, echoing the promise of a brighter tomorrow, united in purpose and resolve.

The identification of his remains, achieved through circumstantial evidence and mitochondrial DNA analysis, is pivotal in the ongoing efforts that have seen Vietnam help identify and repatriate over 1,000 sets of remains since the Paris Peace Accords in 1973.

German-Vietnam ties

In a bid to enhance diplomatic ties further, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính of Vietnam welcomed the newly-appointed German Ambassador to Việt Nam, Helga Margarete, on September 27, 2023. The Prime Minister remarked on the robust development of Việtnam-German relations, particularly in light of high-profile visits by German leaders. He proposed celebratory joint initiatives for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025 and highlighted the significance of cooperation under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. According to Vietnam News , the Ambassador committed to bolstering bilateral relations, especially in education and climate change, while both parties reiterated the importance of resolving regional disputes in accordance with international law.

Typhoon

Typhoon Yagi has wreaked havoc across northern Vietnam, marking a significant disaster with estimated damages soaring to $4.8 billion. As the strongest storm in Asia this year, the typhoon has resulted in 299 fatalities and 34 individuals reported missing, Lismore City News reports. Critical infrastructure, including factories and farmland, has suffered devastating impacts, raising concerns about Vietnam's economic growth forecast for 2024. Following the typhoon, the agriculture sector is experiencing inflation in pig prices, as flooding has disrupted farms, which in turn may pose challenges to financial institutions due to anticipated government debt relief measures.

Vietnam, Cuba renew long-standing friendship ties

Recent high-level discussions between Vietnam and Cuba have led to the reinforcement of their longstanding friendship, Vietnam News reports. Following a state visit by the General Secretary and President Tô Lâm from September 25-27, a joint statement was made emphasising the commitment to enhance exchanges across various sectors including agriculture, healthcare, and technology. A noteworthy declaration made during this visit was the establishment of 2025 as the 'Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Year', coinciding with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, signifying a pivotal moment for cooperation and mutual support on international matters.

Trailblazing ballerina dies

Ballet dancer Michaela Mabinty DePrince, who immigrated to the US from a Sierra Leone orphanage, passed away at 29, as confirmed by her family. DePrince's inspirational journey, marked by perseverance through hardship, included being featured in a documentary and performing on "Dancing With the Stars." She overcame challenges, including a skin pigmentation disorder and a difficult upbringing, to become a principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Boston Ballet. DePrince authored a memoir and a children's book, and she was also an ambassador for War Child, assisting children affected by armed conflict. Her family has requested donations to War Child in her memory, as reported by Euro News .

New justice reform strategy

On September 16, 2024, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone launched the Justice Sector Reform Strategy 2024-2030 at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. This strategy aims to transform the justice system by improving service delivery, enhancing transparency, and ensuring access to justice for all citizens. According to The Sierra Leone Telegraph , key stakeholders, including the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), participated in the event, highlighting their role in promoting human rights within the judicial sector. President Bio emphasized the need for collaboration among justice institutions and civil society to successfully implement these reforms, which address long-standing issues in Sierra Leone's judicial system and reinforce the country's commitment to human rights and justice.

Harrowing experiences of sex workers

The BBC Africa Eye report highlights the harrowing experiences of sex workers in Sierra Leone, particularly focusing on Isata, a young single mother who has been kidnapped, trafficked, and abused repeatedly. The ongoing impact of the civil war, combined with recent crises like the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, has pushed many women into sex work as a means of survival. Isata, who became addicted to a dangerous street drug called kush, eventually returned to sex work after struggling to support her children. The report illustrates the dangers that these women face, including violence, trafficking, and health risks. Many young girls, orphaned by the war, find themselves in similar situations with little support from society or the government. Charity organizations estimate thousands of women and children in Sierra Leone are trafficked annually, often lured by false promises of jobs. Despite the dire circumstances, some women, like Isata and her peers, continue to hope for a better future for their families amidst their suffering.

Lessons from Kenya's police chief's arrest

Kenya's acting chief of police, Gilbert Masengeli, was sentenced to six months in prison for defying court orders to disclose the whereabouts of three men allegedly abducted by police. The judge suspended the sentence for seven days, providing Masengeli one last opportunity to comply. As reported by The Sierra Leone Telegraph , the case arose from a lawsuit by the Law Society of Kenya concerning the men, who were outspoken supporters of anti-government protests earlier this year. This incident draws parallels to the situation in Sierra Leone, where dozens of youths protesting economic decline were arrested, with their current whereabouts unknown. Human rights abuses in both countries risk fueling further political instability.

UAE and Sierra Leone discuss enhancing cooperation

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, led a UAE delegation to Sierra Leone to enhance bilateral cooperation. He conveyed greetings from UAE leaders to President Julius Maada Bio and highlighted the long-standing ties between the two countries, dating back to 1982. The visit aimed to explore new avenues of cooperation in various fields, including health, education, energy, agriculture, mining, and infrastructure, Emirates News Agency reports.

India-Zimbabwe ties

India's Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Bramha Kumar, has reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting Zimbabwe's skills development and capacity-building initiatives. During a recent meeting with Zimbabweans who completed training under the India Technical and Economic Cooperation programme, he highlighted the strong bilateral relations and India's role in various projects, including the Deka pumping and river water intake system, funded by a US$48.1 million Indian Line of Credit. Kumar noted that approximately 5,000 Zimbabwean students are currently studying in India and mentioned the establishment and recent upgrades of 17 Indo-Zim technology centres, which provide critical training for youth and government officials. According to The Herald , the Indian Embassy aims to further enhance cooperation in skills training and capacity building.

Zimbabwe gets ready for sports festival

The Zimbabwe Traditional Sports and Games Federation (ZTSGF) and the African Traditional Sports and Games Confederation (ATSGC) signed a host protocol agreement for the 2028 Multi-Event Festival after Zimbabwe won the bid to host. ATSGC president Michael Shamsu Mustapha expressed confidence in Zimbabwe's preparations and pledged support for the event. The festival will feature various traditional sports and activities, with the 2026 edition taking place in Namibia, The Herald reports.

Combatting drought

Zimbabwe has received humanitarian assistance from Belarus to combat the El Nino-induced drought affecting over 9 million people. The aid package includes food, agricultural equipment, clothing, and supplements, Bulawayo reports. Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe expressed gratitude for Belarus’ support, highlighting its significance for bilateral relations and resilience against adversity. He noted ongoing efforts in Zimbabwe, including drilling boreholes for clean water and creating village business units to empower women and youth. Belarusian Emergency Situations Deputy Minister Ihar Bolatau reaffirmed commitment to cooperation, aiming for Zimbabwe's economic growth despite the drought and promoting sustainable practices to address climate change.

Quality exports

Zimbabwe is prioritising the production of quality exports that meet global standards to boost international trade. Dr. Thomas Utete Wushe, the Industry and Commerce permanent secretary, recently met with representatives from Cotecna, a leader in testing and certification, and Crystal Partners, a female-led investment firm, in South Africa. The discussions focused on the importance of standards verification for economic growth and safeguarding local consumers. Cotecna emphasized that ensuring product quality opens new export opportunities for Zimbabwe, while Crystal Partners highlighted the potential for strategic partnerships to enhance local industries. The Herald reports that this collaboration aims to strengthen Zimbabwe's regulatory frameworks and increase its competitiveness in global markets. Additionally, Dr. Wushe attended the launch of the Zimbabwe/South Africa Chamber of Commerce, promoting a unified approach to trade within the SADC region.

Culling of elephants

Zimbabwe plans to cull 200 elephants due to severe drought and food shortages, along with an overpopulation that has led to increased human-wildlife conflicts. The country's environment minister stated that Zimbabwe has more elephants than needed, with Hwange National Park hosting 65,000 elephants—four times its capacity. Critics of the culling argue for more sustainable solutions to address the drought, emphasising the importance of wildlife tourism. News Central reports that this marks the first culling since 1988, as southern Africa, including Namibia, faces similar challenges.

Diplomatic crisis with Ethiopia

The diplomatic crisis between Somalia and Ethiopia is escalating, primarily triggered by a memorandum signed by Ethiopia with Somaliland for access to the Red Sea. Tensions intensified following a cooperation agreement between Somalia and Egypt, which involved the deployment of Egyptian soldiers to Somalia. Ethiopian officials have accused Somalia of collaborating with external threats, particularly Egypt, while Somalia claims the Egyptian troops are for defensive purposes. Nova.news reports Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre defended the troop deployment, asserting Somalia's right to seek security assistance while condemning Ethiopia's actions as violations of Somali sovereignty. Diplomatic relations are strained further, with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud repeatedly refusing to meet Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during a recent forum in Beijing.

Construction boom

Mogadishu is experiencing a construction boom, transforming its skyline but exacerbating inequality for the urban poor, including many displaced by war and climate shocks. Over 700,000 displaced individuals have settled in overcrowded informal settlements, facing forced evictions as land values rise due to gentrification fueled by wealthy investors. Some local authorities have cleared government lands to accommodate property development, further marginalising vulnerable communities. According to The New Humanitarian , The Somali government aims to address the needs of displaced communities through a National Durable Solution Strategy, but faces challenges due to inadequate funding, land ownership issues, and ongoing humanitarian crises. Activists emphasize the need for improved governance and inclusive urban planning to ensure that all residents have a voice in Mogadishu’s development.

Laboratory strategic plan

Somalia has developed its first-ever laboratory strategic plan, aimed at enhancing diagnostic capabilities and laboratory services in the country. Finalised through collaboration between Africa CDC and Somalia’s Federal Ministry of Health, the plan addresses critical gaps in lab infrastructure, personnel training, and supply management, while aligning with global standards like the International Health Regulations. The initiative is crucial for strengthening public health responses in Somalia, which has a history of health challenges due to resource limitations and a fragile health system. Africa CDC provided technical assistance and support from various specialists to create a costed implementation plan and identify funding sources for execution. This effort is seen as a significant milestone in building a resilient public health system in Somalia.

Missile and space rocket testing facility

Turkey is in discussions with Somalia to construct a missile and space rocket testing facility in the Horn of Africa, due to Somalia's strategic location for launches over the Indian Ocean. The country's proximity to the equator makes it an ideal candidate for a spaceport, enhancing the range and effectiveness of rocket launches. Turkey aims to bolster its ballistic missile program and enter the global space race. Turkish officials are hopeful for Somali approval, although the defence ministry declined to comment. News Central reports Turkey has been increasing its presence in Somalia through defence cooperation and infrastructure projects, as Somalia seeks to rebuild following years of conflict.

Ethiopian troops seize airports

Ethiopian troops have captured key airports in Somalia’s Gedo region—Luq, Dolow, and Bardere—to prevent the potential airlifting of Egyptian troops intended to replace Ethiopian forces in Jubaland and Hirshabelle. This strategic move aims to disrupt a deployment tied to a recent defence agreement between Somalia and Egypt. Relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have deteriorated further due to this and a controversial memorandum regarding Red Sea access. As reported by Nova.news , tensions are also fueled by the ongoing dispute over Ethiopia's Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Egypt opposes. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has notably refused to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during recent events, reflecting heightened diplomatic strains.

Power generation

Zimbabwe's ongoing energy strategy is in focus as power generation from the Kariba Hydro-Power Station continues unabated until the year's end, primarily because the country has not yet exhausted its allocated water resources. In contrast, Zambia has opted to halt its power generation from the same dam due to a drought-induced lack of water. Energy Minister Edgar Moyo has underscored that Zimbabwe's current generation capacity remains around 215MW, significantly below its potential of over 1,000MW, which may necessitate load shedding. In a proactive measure, the Chronicle reports the Zimbabwean government is advocating that ferrochrome companies generate their own power, thereby conserving valuable water resources for redistribution to other sectors. Optimistically, the government anticipates a rebound in water levels and power generation capacity with projections of above-normal rainfall this season. Additionally, efforts are being made to encourage renewable energy development, exemplified by the duty-free importation of solar energy equipment.

Business ties with Indonesia

In a significant diplomatic advancement, Zimbabwe solidified its relationship with Indonesia by signing three pivotal memoranda of understanding (MoUs) during the recent Second Indonesia-Africa Forum. Vice President Kembo Mohadi represented President Mnangagwa and championed the swift initiation of the agreements across the health and fertilisation sectors. Complementarily, a strategic partnership has been established to improve access to affordable medical products through a collaboration between Zimbabwe’s National Pharmaceutical Company (NatPharm) and Indonesia’s Bio Farma, proposing the construction of a pharmaceutical plant in Zimbabwe. Further reinforcing this bilateral cooperation according to The Herald , a technology transfer MoU was inked to revolutionise fertiliser production, epitomised by a high-tech coal fertiliser plant developed by Zimbabwean firm Futurefert in collaboration with Indonesia’s Saputra Global Harvest.

17 agreements signed with China

The deepening bonds between Zimbabwe and China were formalised through the signing of 17 strategic agreements, targeting diverse sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure development, and mining. This occurred during a pivotal meeting between President Mnangagwa and President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where both leaders reiterated their dedication to advancing trade and cooperation. Among the prominent agreements, there are initiatives aimed at aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, specific protocols for agricultural exports, and broad collaborative efforts in the mining sector. This relationship has notably increased Chinese investments in Zimbabwe from approximately $446 million in 2019 to $3.4 billion by 2023, with over $2.2 billion earmarked for significant mining and infrastructure projects, reports the Chronicle .

Investment in the ferrochrome sector

In an effort to bolster investment in the ferrochrome sector, President Mnangagwa recently held discussions with the Xin Gang Lian Group, led by Mr. Zhou Xuddon. The meeting, which took place on September 3, 2024, was centred on exploring investment avenues to rejuvenate Zimbabwe's mining industry, which is integral to the national economy. Ferrochrome is particularly vital due to its application in stainless steel production. Mr. Zhou articulated a keen interest in expanding his operations within Zimbabwe, positioning the nation as a strategic supplier to international markets. As reported by the Chronicle , this initiative aligns with Zimbabwe's broader objectives of enhancing mineral production and fostering job creation, ultimately driving sustainable economic growth.

Stolen vehicles from South Africa

In a concerning development, South African authorities have made substantial recoveries of nearly 100 stolen vehicles, covertly smuggled towards neighbouring countries, including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, from January to August 2024. A substantial portion of these recoveries, specifically in Vhembe District, amounted to 96 high-powered cars, culminating in 61 arrests. Noteworthy seizures included 78 vehicles in Musina, alongside other recoveries in various locations. The operation also revealed the interception of firearms, The Herald reports, signalling a concerted effort to combat rampant cross-border crime. The escalating trend of vehicle thefts emanating from South Africa underscores a worrying pattern, with some thefts reportedly involving fraudulent insurance claims by vehicle owners, which necessitates enhanced vigilance and law enforcement measures across borders.

Football activities suspended

Uruguay has suspended all football activity for the weekend following the health emergency of Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo. According to CNA , the 27-year-old player is currently stable yet unconscious in the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo after experiencing an irregular heartbeat and collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo. The association has announced this suspension for the rights of professional footballers in Uruguay, emphasising the prioritisation of Izquierdo's wellbeing.

Bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia

In a notable diplomatic effort, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay have enhanced bilateral cooperation by forming a joint committee, which recently convened for its inaugural meeting in Montevideo. Chaired by Ahmed Al-Khamshi, Saudi Arabia's Undersecretary of Agriculture, and Nicolas Albertoni, Uruguay's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, this meeting resulted in the signing of a memorandum establishing a joint business council. TV Brics highlights that this collaborative initiative aims to strengthen the trade and diplomatic relations that have existed since 1974.

Increased fish mortality

In environmental news, low temperatures have led to significant fish mortality in the Uruguayan rivers, particularly the Santa Lucia and Negro Rivers. The Assembly for the Water of the Santa Lucia River highlighted the necessity for precautionary measures following the alarming reports of large-scale fish deaths, primarily shad, attributed to freezing temperatures since June, as reported by Prensa Latina . This issue has also been mirrored in Argentina's lower Paraná river basin, prompting discussions around environmental management and conservation strategies.

Uruguay to reduce beef exports to China

Uruguay is actively seeking to reduce its dependency on China for beef exports, a sector significantly impacted by a decelerating Chinese economy. Historically, China has served as the primary market for Uruguayan beef; however, as of August 2023, North America has emerged as the leading revenue source, now accounting for 32% of beef export revenue compared to China's 30%. MercoPress adds that from January to August, Uruguay's beef exports reached US$1.223 billion, exhibiting a slight increase in volume despite an 11% decrease in average prices. Additionally, markets such as the European Union and Israel are contributing to the country’s diversified export strategy. The USDA, however, projects a moderate uptick in Chinese demand for the latter half of the year amidst an anticipated increase in domestic meat production in China.

UAE congratulates Uruguay on Independence Day

UAE leaders, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, sent congratulatory messages to President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay on the occasion of Uruguay's Independence Day, celebrated on August 25th to mark its independence from Brazil in 1825, reports The Siasat Daily .

Missing boy found in forest after four days

A six-year-old boy was found alive in a northern Vietnam forest after being missing for four days. He disappeared while returning home from a celebration with siblings in Yen Bai province. More than 200 people participated in the search, which included draining a pond out of concern he might have fallen in. The boy was discovered in a cassava bush, exhausted but safe. According to the Star , he survived by drinking from a stream and eating familiar leaves and wild fruits. His mother expressed immense relief upon his return, noting he appeared thinner and weaker.

Bilateral trade with Laos using local currencies

Vietnam and Laos are collaborating to enhance the use of their domestic currencies in bilateral trade to mitigate external risks. The State Bank of Vietnam and the Bank of Laos hosted a conference to share experiences and initiate a joint cross-border retail payment system, managed by the Vietnam National Payment Corporation and the Lao National Payment Network Co. Ltd. The Vietnam-Laos cross-border payment project, which will utilise QR codes, is in preparation, with a planned launch in September involving nine Vietnamese banks and 13 Lao banks. This initiative aligns with broader ASEAN efforts to use domestic currencies in trade to guard against political and financial instability, the Nation Thailand reports.

Anti-human trafficking campaign

Nghệ An Province in north-central Vietnam has launched an intensified campaign against human trafficking, coinciding with "National Day Against Human Trafficking." The initiative focuses on raising awareness and combating trafficking, particularly targeting vulnerable populations in remote areas with high unemployment rates, such as women and children. Local police report that traffickers exploit social connections and social media to lure victims with false job offers, often involving sham marriages. Victims are frequently trafficked to countries like Laos and Cambodia, where they face abuse, forced labour, or coercion into illegal activities, Vietnam News reports.

Severe coastal erosion

Severe coastal erosion in Hoang Hoa District, Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam, has led to the sea encroaching up to 100 metres inland, particularly affecting the communes of Hoang Truong, Hoang Thanh, and Hoang Phu. Affected areas have lost 15-20 metres of land since late July, impacting 25 hectares of farmland, 205 homes, and public infrastructure, local media Tuoitre reports. The provincial administration has declared a state of emergency and proposed building a coastal embankment to combat further erosion. Warning signs have been erected to keep people away from dangerous areas, and plans for disaster prevention and evacuation are being developed.

Domestic routes among Southeast Asia's busiest

In August, the Hanoi-HCMC route emerged as the busiest in Southeast Asia, with over 949,000 passengers. It outpaced other major routes like Jakarta-Makassar and Cebu-Manila. The Da Nang-HCMC route ranked fifth with over 427,700 passengers, while the Da Nang-Hanoi route was seventh, serving over 410,000 passengers. Other notable routes included Surabaya-Makassar and Jakarta-Medan, as VN Express reports.

This is the latest sign of warming ties between the sometimes prickly neighbours.

"We are joined together and we should be like real brothers." Prabowo, who gushed over his "beautiful" welcoming ceremony, said. "The Indonesian tradition is we like to solve all problems with compromise and collaboration," added Prabowo, who is due to be inaugurated in October.

Indonesia and Papua New Guinea share an 800-kilometre (500-mile) land border that has historically been a source of numerous disputes. However, in recent months, the two countries have successfully implemented a border security agreement that was once considered nearly impossible.

Earlier this year, Papua New Guinea endorsed a long-overdue defence cooperation agreement with Indonesia, nearly 14 years after it was first proposed.

The western half of the island, or the region called Papua, has been under Indonesian control since the early 1960s. The pro-independence Free Papua Movement has waged a low-level insurgency with the Indonesian military for decades.
