Speaking at the start of talks on Thursday, Xi said global attention was focused on the meeting and described the international situation as unstable and rapidly changing.

“The whole world is watching our meeting,” Xi said.

“Currently, transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe, and the international situation is fluid and turbulent. The world has come to a new crossroads. Can China and the United States overcome the Thucydides trap and create a new paradigm of major country relations? Can we meet global challenges together and provide more stability for the world?”

Xi said both countries had a responsibility to shape future global stability.

“They are the questions of our times that you and I need to answer as leaders of major countries,” he continued.

“China and the United States both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. We should be partners, not rivals. We should help each other succeed and prosper together, and find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era.”

Trump’s visit to China runs from May 13 to 15 and marks his second state visit to the country, as well as the first by a US president since 2017. The trip had originally been planned for April but was postponed at the request of the United States because of the conflict involving Iran.

The leaders previously met in Busan, South Korea, in October, where both sides agreed to pause an escalating tariffs dispute.

He said the milestone reflects a “profound shift” in which the Global South is “no longer a bystander, but a core driver of global change.” Speaking on behalf of President Prabowo, he praised South Africa’s leadership during a challenging year and highlighted the need for a more inclusive global economic agenda. His remarks were carried by SABC, which is providing coverage of the summit.

Rakabuming Raka said global growth must be “strong, but also fair and inclusive,” insisting that efforts at the G20 should go further on adaptation, mitigation and a just transition. He argued that developing countries require financing that is “more accessible, predictable and equal,” calling for debt relief, innovative instruments, blended finance and mechanisms to support green transitions.

Indonesia , he noted, has sought to lead by example by allocating around US$2.5 billion annually, more than half of its national climate budget, to green MSMEs, agricultural insurance programmes and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Rakabuming Raka concluded by stressing that all nations must retain the right to define their own development paths, rejecting any suggestion of a single global model. “Cooperation must empower, not dictate. Cooperation must uplift, not create dependency,” he told leaders. The two-day summit, expected to bring together representatives from 42 countries and international organisations, runs from 22 to 23 November.

80 years of the United Nations: From 51 to 193 member states

On October 24, 1945, the world witnessed the birth of the United Nations, an institution established in the aftermath of World War II to promote peace, security, and cooperation among nations.

Eighty years later, the UN remains one of the most significant symbols of global unity, with 193 member states spanning every corner of the globe. What began with 51 founding members has grown into a truly universal body, reflecting decades of decolonisation, independence movements, and shifting political landscapes.

When the UN Charter came into force in 1945, membership was dominated by major world powers and a handful of independent nations. But the decades that followed changed everything. Between 1946 and 1959, the organisation expanded steadily as post-war recovery reshaped Europe and Asia.

Then came a wave unlike any before: the 1960s and 1970s brought dozens of new African and Asian nations into the fold as colonial empires dissolved and independence swept across the Global South. According to the United Nations , membership had grown to 99 states by 1960 and surpassed 110 by 1962.

The next major shift occurred in the 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Newly sovereign countries across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Balkans joined the UN, marking the organisation's transition into a nearly complete representation of the world map. By the early 2000s, the UN had 193 member states, a number that remains unchanged today.

This steady expansion tells the story of a changing global order. From the original 51 states gathered in San Francisco to nearly every nation on Earth, UN membership reflects humanity’s ongoing quest for shared dialogue and collective problem-solving.

It also mirrors the rise of newly independent voices that reshaped international priorities, from development and equality to environmental sustainability.

In 2025, as the world marks the UN’s 80th anniversary, questions about its effectiveness and reform have taken centre stage. The recent election of Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia to the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term underscores the continued effort to ensure diverse regional representation

Xi Jinping urges greater role for women in politics as Mozambique backs the call

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger representation of women in political leadership, a message that resonated strongly in Mozambique, where female leaders are increasingly asserting influence across political and civic spaces. During a global summit on women’s participation, Mozambique reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusivity in governance. The country’s delegation highlighted progress in education, healthcare, and social inclusion, while acknowledging that systemic barriers remain. The event has further strengthened diplomatic ties between Beijing and Maputo, aligning their development agendas on gender parity and leadership equality.

Prime minister highlights Mozambique’s progress at women leaders meeting

At a regional meeting of women leaders, Mozambique’s Prime Minister underscored the government’s achievements in promoting women’s political participation and economic empowerment. She emphasised that gender equality is not just a social imperative but an economic strategy for national development. Her remarks detailed new initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs, expanding educational access, and providing financing opportunities for female-led startups. These initiatives, she noted, are part of a broader agenda to ensure that women occupy central roles in Mozambique’s policy and decision-making processes.

Post-election fallout leaves over 12,000 workers without compensation

In the aftermath of Mozambique’s recent elections, trade unions have reported that more than 12,000 workers were dismissed without compensation, raising concerns about labour rights and post-election governance. The affected workers, primarily from public and semi-public sectors, allege political bias in the dismissals, claiming they were targeted for perceived affiliations with opposition parties. The unions have appealed for government intervention and international mediation to address the issue. Labour groups warn that unresolved grievances could escalate into strikes or social unrest if not promptly addressed.

World Bank and Mozambique usher in a new era of cooperation anchored in energy

The World Bank and the Mozambican government have entered a new phase of strategic cooperation , focusing on energy development as a cornerstone of the country’s economic transformation. The partnership emphasises expanding renewable energy projects, improving power grid infrastructure, and ensuring energy access for rural populations. World Bank officials described Mozambique as a “key partner” in sustainable growth for southern Africa. The initiative aligns with Mozambique’s ambition to become a regional energy hub through investment in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and solar capacity.

Portugal to assist Mozambique in tackling businessman kidnappings

In response to a troubling surge in kidnappings of businessmen and professionals, Portugal has pledged closer cooperation with Mozambican authorities to combat organised crime. The partnership includes intelligence sharing, specialised training for local police units, and the development of joint task forces. Portuguese officials emphasised that such incidents threaten investor confidence and bilateral economic relations. Mozambique’s government has welcomed the collaboration, framing it as an important step in restoring security and strengthening ties between the two Portuguese-speaking nations.

FAMa neutralises terrorists in Ménaka, Sikasso, and Zantiguila

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have reported significant victories against terrorist groups in operations across Ménaka, Sikasso, and Zantiguila. According to military statements, dozens of militants were neutralised and weapons caches seized in coordinated air and ground offensives. The operations form part of a broader strategy to restore state control over northern and central regions long plagued by insurgency. The government has hailed the offensives as proof of FAMa’s growing capacity to conduct independent counterterrorism operations following the withdrawal of foreign troops. Analysts, however, caution that sustaining such gains will require stabilising governance and rebuilding trust with local communities affected by years of violence.

Launch of nationwide hydrocarbons control and awareness mission

The Malian Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Water has launched a comprehensive hydrocarbons control and awareness mission across Bamako and regional centres. The initiative seeks to ensure compliance with fuel quality standards, monitor distribution networks, and prevent illicit practices in the petroleum sector. Officials emphasised that the campaign also aims to educate consumers on fuel efficiency and environmental impact. This move follows public complaints about irregularities in fuel pricing and quality, which have contributed to economic hardship. The government’s proactive stance reflects its broader push for energy sector reform and transparency amid fiscal constraints and rising global oil prices.

Mali and Hungary deepen diplomatic cooperation

Mali and Hungary have announced a renewed phase of diplomatic cooperation, focusing on education, defence, and economic development. The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that new agreements were signed to facilitate student exchanges, military training programs, and agricultural partnerships. Hungarian officials expressed interest in supporting Mali’s post-conflict reconstruction and counterterrorism efforts through technical assistance. The collaboration is seen as part of Mali’s broader strategy to diversify its international partnerships beyond traditional Western allies, reflecting Bamako’s pivot toward a more multipolar foreign policy. Observers believe the partnership could bring tangible benefits if accompanied by transparent governance and mutual accountability.

CNT president decries economic isolation and pledges resilience against terrorism

Colonel Malick Diaw, president of Mali’s National Transitional Council (CNT), delivered a defiant address at the opening of the October 2025 parliamentary session, declaring that while “they want to suffocate us economically, terrorism will be defeated.” His remarks underscored Mali’s determination to resist international economic pressure while pursuing self-reliance in security and development. Diaw emphasised the importance of national unity and resource transparency to rebuild the economy amid sanctions and regional isolation. His speech received widespread attention as Mali continues to balance military campaigns against jihadist groups with the need to restore democratic governance and financial stability.

Mali–Mauritania dialogue relaunched to ease cross-border tensions

Diplomatic efforts between Mali and Mauritania have resumed as both governments seek to overcome recent tensions linked to cross-border security operations and trade disputes. Officials from Bamako and Nouakchott held talks aimed at strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism, migration control, and regional commerce. The relaunch of dialogue marks a positive shift following months of strained relations fueled by mutual accusations of border violations. Both sides have expressed optimism about building mechanisms for joint patrols and conflict resolution, signalling a renewed commitment to peace and partnership in the Sahel region.

A striking new map highlights a sobering reality of the 50 U.S. counties with the highest binge and heavy drinking rates overwhelmingly concentrated in the Midwest, especially in Wisconsin.

According to data compiled by 24/7 Wall St. from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps programme, a joint project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, more than one in four adults in these counties drink excessively far above the national average of fewer than one in five.

Digging deeper, 41 of these top 50 “drunkest” counties are in Wisconsin, making the Badger State by far the most concentrated region on the list.

Even outside public perception of Wisconsin as “ America ’s beer capital,” the data shows this trend extends well beyond social stereotypes; Outagamie County, home to Appleton, ranks number 1, where about 31% of adults report binge or heavy drinking.

In a broader metro-area analysis, 7 of the 10 drunkest U.S. cities, including Appleton, Green Bay, and Madison are located in Wisconsin.

Why it matters

1. Health risks soar.

Excessive alcohol use is a major preventable risk factor your health—linked to chronic illnesses like liver disease, cancer, heart disease, and mental-health issues, alongside accidents and impaired driving.

2. Wisconsin leads—and that spotlight demands awareness.

While the state appears on top in statistics, it also raises questions about cultural norms, access to treatment, and alcohol policies across the region.

3. Geography plays a role.

The regional clustering suggests local customs, social environments, and even economic factors influence drinking behaviors.

From desert to glaciers - Chile is so long it beats the moon’s diameter

The Moon hovers large over our nights, yet surprisingly, its diameter, measured at about 3,474 kilometres, is shorter than the south‑to‑north span of Chile.

That long, narrow nation stretches into South America’s Pacific coast for 4,270 kilometres. This comparison shines a light on Chile’s extraordinary geography and the sheer variety of climates contained within its thin boundaries.

From the Atacama Desert in the north to the glaciers of Patagonia in the far south, Chile stretches over 33 degrees of latitude. It occupies a narrow strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, measuring 4,270 kilometres from north to south while averaging only about 175 kilometres wide.

The country’s present shape emerged from a combination of rugged topography and historical events: the Andes formed a natural barrier to the east, and colonial expansion, followed by 19th‑century wars, extended Chile’s reach north and south.

Travelling the length of Chile is like journeying from London to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso or from New York to Bogotá—it’s that long.

This extreme length produces remarkable environmental contrasts. In southern Chile, including Tierra del Fuego, a maritime climate prevails; some parts receive up to 4,000 millimetres of rain a year, though cities such as Punta Arenas get a much more modest 410 millimetres.

Central Chile around Santiago enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, averaging around 275 millimetres of annual rainfall. At the northern extreme, the Atacama Desert sees almost no rainfall because the cold Humboldt Current suppresses cloud formation.

In just a few thousand kilometres, you move from snow‑capped Andean peaks and fjords to fertile valleys and some of the driest landscapes on Earth.

Understanding the Moon’s Scale

Placing Chile and the Moon in the same sentence invites curiosity about the Moon’s true size. Astronomers describe the Moon as a mid‑sized natural satellite: Universe Today reports its diameter as approximately 3,474 kilometres.

Space.com , citing NASA data, notes that the Moon’s mean radius is 1,737.5 kilometres, giving a mean diameter of about 3,475 kilometres, and that it orbits Earth at an average distance of roughly 384,400 kilometres.

In other words, the Moon spans just over a quarter of Earth’s width and sits about thirty Earth diameters away. If our planet were scaled to the size of a nickel, the Moon would be no bigger than a coffee bean.
