Did you know that 70% of people are right-eye dominant, while roughly 30% are left-eye dominant? That’s according to visual science sources citing ocular dominance studies.

Though eye dominance doesn’t equate to better vision, it plays a subtle but meaningful role in how our brain processes visual information.

Eye dominance (also called ocular dominance) refers to the tendency to favour one eye over the other when both are open and doing visual tasks. Much like handedness, the dominant eye tends to “lead” in sighting and alignment tasks.

However, dominance is not always consistent across all tasks. Some people may shift dominance depending on the visual challenge , lighting, or fatigue levels. For example, in 3D video perception, studies find that showing higher-quality imagery to someone’s dominant eye can enhance perceived comfort and preference.

Interestingly, although many assume one’s dominant eye aligns with the dominant hand, that isn’t always true. Cross-dominance, that is, right-handed but left-dominant eye, or vice versa, is not uncommon. Some analyses estimate that about 10–30% of people may have such cross-dominance.

In clinical and visual correction settings: monovision lens prescriptions, cataract surgery, or refractive procedures, knowledge of a dominant eye is sometimes used to optimise outcomes.

While eye dominance itself doesn’t cause vision impairment, it’s part of a larger visual ecosystem. Worldwide, the burden of eye disease and vision loss is rising, driven by ageing populations, lifestyle changes, and gaps in access to eye care.

For instance, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of moderate and severe vision loss, affecting over 196 million people globally and projected to climb to nearly 288 million by 2040. The global burden of blindness, especially in low- and middle-income regions, underscores the urgency of scaling eye health services .
