Vladimir Putin welcomed Prabowo Subianto, describing bilateral ties as “strategic” and pointing to a 12.5 per cent rise in trade last year despite a recent slowdown. He outlined key areas for expanded cooperation, including energy, agriculture, industry and space , while also emphasising cultural and diplomatic engagement, noting Indonesia’s membership in BRICS as a further platform for collaboration.

China’s US Embassy takes swipe at ‘China shock’ narrative in song video

In a 56-second video posted on social media on Wednesday, the embassy mocked the so-called “China shock” narrative that often surfaces in Western media when China outperforms the United States in a particular field.

The clip features a cartoon eagle — a stand-in for the US — singing to a panda representing China.

Through the song, the embassy delivers pointed jabs at what it portrays as hypocrisy in Western criticism of China, particularly over manufacturing and trade in electric vehicles, solar energy and technology .

“Great ideas until China checks,” the video declares.

“When we lead, it’s ‘progress, wow.’ When China leads, it’s ‘overcapacity now,’” the eagle sings.

The embassy also leans into China’s reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse.

For years, the surplus of “made in China” labels has been a running joke in the West, often implying poor quality. The video flips that trope, presenting China’s industrial capacity as a source of resentment rather than ridicule.

It further accuses Western media of framing China’s rise through a distorted lens.

“We preach ‘fair play,’ ‘open the gate,’ feels fair till China’s moving too great,” the eagle sings.

Trade tensions between Beijing and Washington intensified under President Donald Trump, during both his first and second terms in office.

Trump accused China of using “vicious trade tactics” and of violating a temporary trade truce earlier last year, and at one point threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods entering the US.

For the Chinese Embassy, however, China’s industrial success is not the real problem behind the backlash.

“The real China shock? Can’t stand them rise.”

Beijing’s state-owned money printer, China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation (CBPMC), has now become Kathmandu’s dominant supplier.

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Friday issued a letter of intent to CBPMC to design, print and deliver 430 million pieces of the Rs 1,000 note.

The contract is valued at US$16.985 million. NRB said CBPMC was selected as the substantially responsive, lowest evaluated bidder.

CBPMC has now won seven consecutive bids over the past three years. During this period, it will earn about US$63 million for printing roughly 2.38 billion banknotes.

China entered Nepal’s currency-printing market only in 2016. Until then, India had been the traditional source, including printing Nepal’s currency between 1945 and 1955.

India last secured a major contract in January 2023, when NRB chose its Security Printing and Minting Corporation to print 300 million pieces of the NPR 50 note for US$5.048 million.

Cost is not the only factor driving Nepal’s shift. Its new banknotes feature disputed regions with India — Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani — making it politically sensitive for New Delhi to print them.

Nepal also says China offers modern security features and competitive pricing. Other South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand and Afghanistan, also print their currency in China.

Speaking in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects, Modi cautioned that external dependence weakens India’s future.

“We have no big enemies in the world in the true sense. If we have any enemy, it is our dependence on other countries. This is our biggest enemy,” he said. “The enemy must be defeated. We always have to repeat this. The more foreign dependence, the greater the failure of the country.”

He urged collective action to reduce this vulnerability, framing self-reliance as a pillar of national strength rather than merely an economic plan. Modi’s remarks come at a tense moment in India–U.S. relations, with trade and energy policies at the centre of dispute.

Washington recently imposed a 25% reciprocal duty on Indian goods from August 7, followed by an additional 25% penalty tariff beginning August 27 — a direct response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.

New Delhi has defended its stance, insisting that it will secure the “best deal” on oil to protect its citizens’ interests. Indian officials have accused Washington of double standards, pointing to ongoing U.S. imports of Russian chemicals and fertilisers, allegations rejected by President Donald Trump .

He warned of the dangers posed by foreign influences, urging the nation to remain vigilant against external provocations.

"Once again, I call on all Indonesians to stay united. Differences should not become a source of conflict. That is exactly what foreign powers hope for," Prabowo's statement emphasised.

He reminded the audience that Indonesia's long and troubled history with colonisation illustrates ongoing efforts by other nations to create discord.

The minister asserted that some foreign entities continue to finance non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that stir conflict within the nation. "They came for hundreds of years, and they still provoke us. With money, they fund NGOs to incite division," he said.

Despite this, Prabowo clarified that his remarks were not intended to foster animosity towards other countries. Instead, he aimed to alert citizens about potential manipulation. "I am not urging Indonesians to distrust other countries. But we must not allow ourselves to be manipulated," he explained.

He also evoked the wisdom of Indonesia’s founding leaders to underpin his message, encouraging citizens to navigate today’s global challenges responsibly. "We recall what our founding fathers said: the Indonesian people must stand on their own feet," he concluded, reinforcing the need for self-reliance amidst international pressures.

From May 1, every foreign traveller must fill out a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering, regardless of whether they are arriving by land, sea, or air.

All foreign visitors must complete the form online within three days before arrival.

The TDAC is free to apply for and does not follow the same processes for visa acquisition.

Travellers will need to give personal information like their passport number, job, phone number, and details about where they will stay in Thailand to apply, as well as answer questions about their health .

After sending in the form, travellers will get an email with a QR code which they must show when they arrive in Thailand. Without this card, no foreign traveller will be allowed to enter.

The Thai government says this new system will make entering the country faster, safer, and easier. "We want to make travel into Thailand smoother and more secure for everyone," officials said .

To get the TDAC, travellers must go to the official website and fill out the form. If a traveller has been to a high-risk area recently, they will need to fill out extra health information. It is also possible to add the names of people travelling together.

Lesotho Roundup: Cancer crisis, DRC doctors' probe, Trade deficit

DRC doctors probe

Two medical doctors from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), employed at Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital (QMMH), are under investigation for allegations of negligence, malpractice, and unethical conduct. One of the doctors is accused of reporting to work while intoxicated, endangering patients' lives, while the other is being probed for malpractice linked to his previous employment at Maluti Adventist Hospital in Mapoteng, Lesotho Times reports. Health Minister Selibe Mochoboroane confirmed that the Lesotho Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy Council has been tasked with investigating the matter and recommending appropriate action. “The investigation will primarily focus on how one of the doctors, who has an alleged history of malpractice and negligence at Maluti Adventist Hospital, was subsequently hired at Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital,” Mochoboroane said. The investigation will also scrutinise the hiring process that allowed the doctor with a questionable past to secure employment at QMMH.

US visa scandal

As legislator Tṧepo Lipholo continues his controversial campaign to reclaim Lesotho’s purportedly lost land from South Africa, an official involved in facilitating his travel to the United States has been suspended. Japan Mntambo, Director of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a "Note Verbal" that allowed Lipholo to obtain a US visa for his campaign. However, Mntambo now faces suspension for allegedly issuing the document without parliamentary approval, Lesotho Times reports. Lipholo, the sole MP of the Basotho Covenant Movement (BCM), has previously submitted motions in Parliament seeking the return of Free State and other territories to Lesotho. The government, led by Prime Minister Sam Matekane, has distanced itself from Lipholo’s agenda, wary of straining diplomatic relations with South Africa. Foreign Affairs Minister Lejone Mpotjoana has labeled Mntambo’s actions a serious violation of protocol, warranting further investigation.

Lesotho’s growing cancer crisis

Lesotho is grappling with an escalating cancer crisis, with calls for urgent investment in local healthcare infrastructure. Health Minister Selibe Mochoboroane revealed that the government spends approximately M250,000 per cancer patient for treatment in South Africa, an unsustainable financial burden as cases continue to rise. Lesotho Times reports that in 2023 alone, the Sankatana Oncology Centre recorded 1,888 cancer cases, including 500 cases of cervical cancer. Speaking at the World Cancer Day commemoration, the minister emphasized the need for a national health system capable of managing cancer treatment locally. He proposed establishing a medical school to train local specialists and a dedicated health fund supported by employer and employee contributions. Despite the government’s efforts, including an HPV vaccination campaign with a 95% success rate and the construction of Lesotho’s first cancer center, experts stress the need for more skilled healthcare workers and better palliative care services.

Chinese embassy disowns Businessman Yan Xie

The Chinese Embassy in Maseru has publicly distanced itself from controversial businessman Yan Xie, popularly known as John, clarifying that he is not a Chinese citizen. The embassy has also dismissed claims that Chinese investors or officials in Lesotho are involved in Xie’s business dealings. Public Eye News reports that Xie has been at the center of multiple corruption and business misconduct allegations. A previous investigation into his nationality was launched by former Minister of Home Affairs, Motlalentoa Letsosa, but was inconclusive due to government changes in 2022. Xie reportedly fled to Australia amid allegations of financial impropriety.

Trade deficit

Lesotho’s trade balance remains a cause for concern, with the latest Southern African Customs Union (SACU) report revealing a widening deficit. In 2023, the country exported goods worth M15.3 billion while importing M31.7 billion. As a SACU member, Lesotho relies heavily on revenue from the union, which significantly contributes to its national budget. Despite government efforts to enhance local production, the country remains a net consumer rather than a producer, Informative News reports. Challenges such as border delays, red tape, and inadequate infrastructure continue to hinder trade, limiting the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The manufacturing sector, historically a key economic pillar, has also declined, reflecting shifts in global and regional market dynamics. The business community has urged the government to strengthen border efficiency, streamline customs procedures, and boost local production to capitalise on regional trade opportunities.

Namibia ranked fourth safest country in Africa

Namibia has recently been ranked as the fourth safest country in Africa, according to a study by Altezza Travel, which considered global safety perceptions and citizen experiences. This ranking comes in the wake of assessments that placed Mauritius, Ghana, and Zambia ahead of Namibia. Spokesperson Romeo Muyunda highlighted the role of Namibia's political stability and its thriving tourism industry in achieving this accolade. The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism is launching a tourism safety campaign aimed at bolstering Namibia’s attractiveness to both travellers and investors. The overarching goal is for Namibia to reach the status of the safest country in Africa, facilitated by ongoing collaboration between citizens and law enforcement.

Over 73 Lumpy Skin Disease reported

Namibia's Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) has sounded the alarm over 73 confirmed cases of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) reported in the Otjombinde Constituency, Omaheke Region. Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Johannes Shoopala has urged farmers to report LSD occurrences to state veterinarians, as the disease poses significant risks to the livestock sector. It is transmitted through insect bites, leading to severe implications for Namibia's beef exportation, which is a crucial part of the nation's economy. Farmers are advised to vaccinate their livestock, implement effective insect control measures, and promptly report any suspicious cases.

Namibia police raise concerns amid rise in drug use and trafficking

In light of rising drug use and trafficking, the Namibian Police have raised serious concerns regarding the expanding demographic involved in these illicit activities, including mothers and elderly individuals. Notably, a recent operation led to the arrest of a 60-year-old woman at the Ariamsvlei Border Post in possession of methamphetamine valued at N$1.3 million (over USD 69,000). December 2024 saw a considerable rise in drug-related arrests, with 126 individuals apprehended for various offences. Among these cases, a mother and daughter were found with 187 cannabis plants worth N$1.7 million (about USD 91,000), alongside other substantial quantities of drugs such as mandrax and cocaine. The increasing number of Namibians arrested internationally for drug trafficking has also raised concerns about the country’s reputation on the global stage.

Trade relations with China

China emerged as the largest trading partner in November 2024. Approximately 26.8% of Namibia's exports, predominantly uranium, were directed towards China, while the country accounted for 24.6% of Namibia's imports, which include aircraft and motor vehicles. Namibia's trade deficit has improved from 7.7 billion Namibian dollars (about USD 413 million) in October to 5.5 billion (over USD 295 million) in November. Other key trading partners include South Africa, Botswana, Belgium, and Zambia, with South Africa contributing 17.4% to exports and a substantial 34.9% to imports.

Namibia hails removal of Cuba from terrorism sponsor list

Namibia has formally welcomed the United States' decision to remove Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, viewing it as a positive milestone for international diplomacy and justice. President Nangolo Mbumba praised the Biden Administration’s announcement as a long-awaited move that corresponds with Namibia's ongoing advocacy for Cuba's removal from what he considers an unjust designation. He further stressed that this step should pave the way for the U.S. to terminate its economic blockade against Cuba. Namibia has long upheld its support for Cuba on various international platforms, with National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi also acknowledging this decision as a constructive advancement towards normalising U.S.-Cuba relations.

China has strongly criticised a recent Pentagon report that highlights a "new wave" of corruption within the Chinese military. The report suggests that corruption among senior leaders has disrupted China's military modernisation efforts.

In response, China's foreign ministry urged the United States to stop issuing "irresponsible reports" and accused the Pentagon of exaggerating the situation.

Meanwhile, in New York City, Baimadajie Angwang, a former NYPD officer, is fighting to be reinstated after being cleared of spying charges for China. Angwang, who was accused of feeding information about New York's Tibetan community to the Chinese consulate, had the charges dropped in January 2023 due to new evidence. Despite this, the NYPD fired him for refusing to comply with an internal investigation.

In a regular briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed China’s commitment to stable relations with Washington, regardless of the U.S. election outcome, the AFP reports.

"We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation," Mao said. Stressing that Beijing’s policy towards the U.S. has been "consistent," she avoided any direct reference to Trump’s potential return to office, stating that the election is "an internal affair of the United States."

When asked about a possible congratulatory call from President Xi Jinping if Trump’s victory is confirmed, Mao stated, "After the U.S. election results are released and officially announced, we will handle related matters in accordance with usual practice."

China-U.S. relations have experienced tension in recent years with disputes over trade, technology, and regional security.

Oil production

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) of Libya is planning to enhance its oil production by 2024, having held discussions with key representatives from major oil companies on October 22. Under the leadership of NOC's Khalifa Abdul Sadiq, the meetings concentrated on improving drilling and maintenance efforts, addressing technical and logistical obstacles, and devising long-term projects. Recent statistics revealed that Libya's crude oil production reached 24 barrels, alongside 1.33 million barrels of gas equivalent within the preceding month. Daily consumption metrics indicated usage of 991 million cubic feet of gas and 25.856 barrels of crude oil, Nova News reports.

Urban planning

Libyan Prime Minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba has taken initiatives to rectify the significant absence of urban planning within the country. During a visit to the Urban Planning Authority, Aldabaiba engaged in a workshop where a comprehensive tripartite plan was introduced to alleviate dire urban conditions caused by haphazard construction, according to Libya Herald . Core aspects of the plan include the creation of dedicated urban planning departments within engineering faculties and the provision of technical training for Authority personnel, targeting a completion time of 18 months. Aldabaiba reiterated the urgency of integrating urban planning into Libya's broader development strategies.

CAF investigates Lybia-Nigeria row

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has mandated the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to submit relevant documentation concerning a cancelled match in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier by today, October 20, 2024. The match, originally set for October 15 in Benghazi, was boycotted by Nigeria due to the diversion of their flight and an 18-hour detention without basic provisions. LFF Secretary General Nasser Al-Suwaie announced the appointment of legal representation to compile evidence amid concerns regarding potential collusion within CAF, African Football reports. Calls from former Nigerian player Harrison Jalla for intervention by the African Union have arisen, amidst allegations of mutual mistreatment between the teams. Presently, Nigeria is at the forefront of Group D with seven points, followed by Benin, Rwanda, and Libya.

Assault and arrest

A 28-year-old Libyan national has been detained in Germany on suspicion of orchestrating an assault on the Israeli embassy located in Berlin. Prosecutors have charged the suspect with establishing communication with an ISIL member regarding the planned attack, with intentions of using firearms. The arrest followed intelligence provided by a foreign agency and resulted in a raid in Bernau. Noteworthy is that the suspect, who entered Germany in November 2022, saw his asylum application rejected in September 2023. Aljazeera reports that German authorities are currently on heightened alert due to the escalating threats posed by Islamist groups and anti-Israel violence, exacerbated by current conflicts related to Gaza.

Lybia-Egypt relations

The Real Estate Development Chamber of Egypt, under the leadership of Osama Saad El-Din, recently conducted a visit to Libya, culminating in the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Libyan chambers of commerce. The intent of these agreements is to bolster cooperation and exchange investment know-how, thereby facilitating the entry of Egyptian companies into Libya's reconstruction initiatives, Daily News Egypt reports. Egyptian construction firms bring critical expertise in urban development, which is particularly pertinent to Libya’s urgent need for the establishment of new urban areas. The visiting delegation highlighted the prospects for exporting building materials from Egypt to Libya. Additionally, the discussions addressed the necessity for more straightforward processes regarding the movement of Egyptian labourers and considerations for foreign ownership rights in urban projects within Libya. Both parties have expressed a robust commitment to ongoing cooperation, with further meetings anticipated to delve into the reconstruction efforts in more detail. Daily News

She accused the Spanish monarchy of failing to acknowledge the harm caused by colonisation.

During a press conference on October 2, the president confirmed that the relations between both countries remain good but maintained the country’s position on the matter.

Editor on the run

The media landscape in Zimbabwe is facing turmoil as Guthrie Munyuki, editor of the Daily News, has gone into hiding following a raid on his residence by armed men who claimed to be law enforcement. This raid was reportedly in connection with a controversial birthday advertisement for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which mistakenly implied the President had passed away. During the raid, the armed men confiscated phones belonging to Munyuki's family in search of him. The advertisement was placed by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and ended with the phrase, “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” triggering significant public uproar. According to APA News , While the Daily News issued an apology citing a production lapse, concerns have escalated regarding the safety of Munyuki's family, prompting legal counsel to engage with police for further clarification.

President's absence at UN General Assembly

President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has announced that he will not be attending the 2024 United Nations General Assembly in New York due to a “dense programme” scheduled for the last quarter of the year. Instead, the Zimbabwean statement at the assembly will be communicated by Foreign Affairs Minister F.M. Shava, who is currently in New York for the event, reports Arise News .

Man jailed for stealing $150 TelOne wires

A 37-year-old man, Godfrey Kanyenga, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was caught stealing TelOne drop wires valued at US$150 in Harare. Kanyenga employed a makeshift tool to dismantle the wires adjacent to Melbourne Maternity Hospital, but his actions were thwarted by a vigilant security guard on-site, leading to his apprehension. This event underscores the persisting challenge of infrastructure theft, which significantly impacts telecommunications services in the region, reports the Chronicle .

eVisa on arrival

Zimbabwe is also advancing its entry procedures for travellers through an upgraded eVisa system, now facilitating applications for travellers from 118 countries to obtain eVisas on arrival, streamlining the entry mechanism into the country. Previously, visitors needed to procure a visa upon arrival without the pre-travel eVisa option. The visa system categorises into three distinct categories: 1) Category A has no visa requirement with an online declaration before travel; 2) Category B requires no pre-travel visa but mandates a visa upon entry while allowing for the online declaration; and 3) Category C necessitates a visa before travelling, with advance payment required. Tourist visas will generally be valid for 90 days, whereas visit and business visas will be valid for around 30 days. Notably, all travellers aged over 45 years are mandated to possess a visa, irrespective of the duration of their stay. Further details revealed by VisaGuide News indicate that Zimbabwe's eVisa options include Single Entry for 1 month at $30, Double Entry for 3 months at $45, and the KAZA Univisa, applicable for one month covering Zambia and Zimbabwe at a fee of $65. Certain nationals, particularly from several African and Caribbean nations, are exempt from visa requirements.

Investors confident in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is regarded as a potentially crucial African economy by investors over the next five to ten years, bolstered by ongoing economic reforms. Mr. Praveer Tripathi, representing Indian businesses, met with Vice President Kembo Mohadi during the 12th Annual Conference of African Parliaments, expressing that the country’s economic potential hinges on the synergy between young and experienced leadership. Despite external sanctions, India remains committed to enhancing investments in Zimbabwe through established partnerships and credit lines, the Chronicle reports. The meeting aimed to address misconceptions surrounding investment in Zimbabwe, with Vice President Mohadi, outlining various promotional initiatives such as the one-stop investment shop. Participants, including firms like JNS Cloud Solutions, expressed keen interest in ICT opportunities, while Deputy Minister Kuda Mnangagwa stressed the importance of debunking misinformation to foster business community engagement. Optimism regarding Zimbabwe as a favourable investment destination was prevalent among the participating investor groups, with follow-up meetings planned to delve further into sector opportunities.

The recall follows allegations that the machines, which were privately procured and shipped under diplomatic cover between Russia and the Middle East, were discovered in the consulate building, the Monitor reports.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Okello Oryem, confirmed the recall, emphasising that it was part of the investigative process rather than a punitive action. "Yes, Ambassador Mayega was recalled to help with the investigation, but it is not true that he has been expelled from the UAE," Oryem clarified.

He added that the investigation is being conducted by the Police and the External Security Organisation (ESO) since the incident occurred outside Uganda.

"What happened in our mission in Dubai is regrettable, but there are ongoing investigations to find out who authorised the events in our mission," Oryem stated. He also noted that if the officials are found guilty, they will not return to Dubai, but if they are cleared of any wrongdoing, they will be reinstated.

Despite the controversy, Oryem assured that Uganda's diplomatic relations with the UAE remain strong and unaffected by the incident. "It is a small storm in a teacup; it does not stretch our strong relations in the UAE," he said.

Reacting to the situation, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Haruna Nkunyingi Muwada, criticised the deployment of ambassadors and foreign service staff, claiming that many lack proper guidance and knowledge of foreign policy. "I have regularly raised concerns over the deployment of ambassadors and foreign service staff who are largely political appointees. On the list of 38 missions, 95 percent of them are ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM)-leaning political appointees," Nkunyingi said. He suggested that the incident in Dubai should serve as a cautionary example for other Ugandan diplomats.

Nkunyingi also expressed concern about the potential repercussions for Ugandans travelling to the UAE.

The proposed legislation seeks to limit the role of foreign observers and critics in Venezuela’s electoral process.

The bill includes provisions to tighten regulations on non-governmental organizations (NGOs), increase government oversight of social media, and potentially ban foreign election observation missions.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, a key ally of President Nicolás Maduro, has criticised NGOs as "facades for financing terrorist actions" and suggested that future international monitors could be barred.

Watch the debate here:

This proposal follows a controversial July 28 election where Maduro was declared the victor for a third term. The election results have faced widespread criticism, with both domestic and international voices challenging the official outcome. The opposition has claimed that their own results show a different winner.

Maduro insists social media is being used to attack him and to promote "hate," "fascism" and "division." In the previous week, Maduro banned the social media platform X for 10 days after its CEO, Elon Musk, alleged election fraud, and has called for a boycott of WhatsApp.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk has expressed concern that the new law could further suppress democratic and civic freedoms in Venezuela. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has also warned that the bill could restrict freedom of association and expression, AFP reported.

As the National Assembly continues to review the bill, critics worry that it will further erode Venezuela’s democratic institutions and limit international oversight of the country’s elections.

UAE-Uganda trade ties

The UAE Ambassador to Uganda, Abdalla Al Shamsi, highlighted the strong trade and investment ties between the two nations. Significant collaborations include investments in the aviation industry, oil and gas sector, and a 1 Gigawatt Solar Power Station. The UAE is also involved in the construction of Kidepo International Airport and tourist hotels within Kidepo National Park. The ambassador expressed optimism for the future of UAE-Uganda relations, with increased trade and economic growth. The two countries anticipate a future of mutual benefit and friendship.

Ugandans impoverished due to costly healthcare

An annual World Bank report shows that close to a million Ugandans are pushed into poverty due to costly out-of-pocket spending on healthcare. The report highlights the urgent need for enhanced financial protection, particularly for rural households, and recommends increasing government healthcare spending to address the issue. The inadequate supply of medicines and widespread theft in the health sector also contribute to the problem, local publication The Monitor reports

Exports to Kenya decline on trade disputes

Uganda's exports to Kenya have fallen by 9.09% in Q1 2024, largely due to a trade dispute between Nairobi and Kampala. This has led to a blockade of Ugandan goods like eggs, sugar, milk powder, and grains. This has forced Uganda to seek alternative markets in North and West Africa. Kenya and Uganda have agreed to resolve the trade disputes, but implementation remains uncertain, the Ugandan Standard reports.

Former parliament opposition leader considers presidency

Former Ugandan parliament opposition leader Mathias Mpuuga is considering running for president in 2026. According to Mpuuga the East African nation needs future leaders, and he will decide on his candidacy following a consultation with his supporters. He was suspended from the National Unity Platform (NUP) party in March by party leader Robert Kyagulanyi for allegedly receiving money from President Yoweri Museveni, which he claims was legal, VOA Africa reported.

Inclusion in top 10 African countries with most foreign direct investment

Uganda was among the top 10 African countries that attracted the most foreign direct investment in 2023 . While the clean energy sector is a major draw, rapid economic growth and a youthful population also contribute to investment in the continent. Overall FDI inflows into Africa declined by 3%, but the continent saw significant expansion in greenfield investments, particularly in the clean energy sector. Some of the top countries attracting FDI included Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Senegal, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Wang Huning, a high-ranking leader in China's Communist Party overseeing Taiwan affairs, allegedly convened a meeting last week to coordinate strategies for influencing the election discreetly.

A senior Taiwanese security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed details about the meeting, indicating a heightened effort to impact Taiwan's political landscape.

Wang, who holds a pivotal role in shaping China's Taiwan policy, emphasized the need for the Chinese Communist Party to enhance its effectiveness in shaping public opinion in Taiwan while reducing the risk of external detection of interference.

The meeting aimed to align efforts across various departments to influence the self-governing island's electoral process.

Taiwanese officials have long accused Beijing of meddling in their elections, particularly favoring candidates advocating closer ties with China.

As Taiwan's presidential candidates intensify their campaigns, tensions rise across the Taiwan Strait, with China exerting military, political, and economic pressure on the democratic island.

The Taiwanese security official noted that Wang stressed the importance of strategizing to evade detection, especially after Chinese leader Xi Jinping's recent visit to the United States, during which President Joe Biden warned against interference in Taiwan's elections.

The meeting attendees were reportedly instructed to coordinate with the Communist Party's Central Propaganda Department and the People's Liberation Army's Base 311—a psychological warfare unit based in Fuzhou.

Base 311, established in 2005, plays a crucial role in implementing Beijing's "Three Warfares" strategy against Taiwan, encompassing public opinion warfare, psychological warfare, and legal warfare.

Strategies discussed at the meeting reportedly include amplifying narratives framing the election as a "choice between war and peace" and portraying the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as provocateurs.

The meeting attendees were also directed to collaborate with other entities, such as the Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office and the Communist Party's United Front Work Department, to engage with Taiwanese businesspeople and lower-ranking politicians.

Disinformation campaigns targeting DPP candidates, particularly Vice President Lai Ching-te and his running mate Hsiao Bi-khim, have surged on social media platforms controlled by alleged Chinese state actors.

Amid China's longstanding goal of reunification with Taiwan, the election interference allegations highlight the complex dynamics between the two sides, with the DPP prioritizing ties with the United States—a move that further fuels Beijing's concerns.

The election interference claims add to existing tensions across the Taiwan Strait, where China has repeatedly vowed to reclaim Taiwan, and the island's residents increasingly identify themselves as distinctly Taiwanese rather than Chinese.

The legislators argue that over 90% of Iran's oil exports are directed to China, and the revenue generated is allegedly funneled to groups like Hamas in Palestine, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen, which have all been implicated in activities targeting Israel.

Despite international sanctions, China has significantly increased its purchases of Iranian oil in recent years, benefiting from substantial discounts.

The U.S. House of Representatives is now advocating for the imposition of secondary sanctions on Chinese financial institutions that facilitate the sale of Iranian oil.

The move comes in response to concerns raised by lawmakers about the ineffectiveness of existing sanctions and the substantial rise in Iran's oil exports.

A report from The Washington Institute highlights a significant surge in Iran's oil exports, exceeding triple the volume since 2020.

The Fars news agency, linked to the Islamic Regime Guard Corps (IRGC), reported a tenfold increase in income from Iran's oil exports to China compared to 2020. This surge reportedly followed the signing of a 25-year cooperation document and the restoration of relations between Iran and China.

The U.S. lawmakers, spearheaded by Republican Michael Lawler and Democrat Jared Moskowitz, emphasize the urgency of the bill, which was approved in the House of Representatives on November 3rd.

The legislation intends to intensify sanctions related to Iranian oil by targeting ports and refineries involved in purchasing or storing Iranian oil. Lawler stated that the bill sends a clear message that violators of sanctions, particularly those buying Iranian oil, will be held accountable.
