Main Points

Press freedom remains sharply uneven worldwide in 2025, with Nordic countries maintaining their dominance at the top of global rankings, while dozens of nations continue to operate under constrained or reduced media conditions, according to the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The index, which scores countries on a scale from 0 to 100, shows Norway once again leading globally with a score of 93, followed closely by Estonia and the Netherlands at 89, and Sweden at 88. Finland, Denmark and Ireland also rank among the highest performers, each scoring 87, reinforcing Northern Europe’s longstanding position as a stronghold for independent journalism.

European countries dominate the upper tier of the index, with several nations, including Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, and Czechia, scoring in the mid-80s, indicating a broadly stable media environment. The United Kingdom and Canada sit slightly lower at 79, reflecting what RSF describes as “moderate but notable pressures” on press independence.

Despite Europe’s overall strength, the index highlights variations within the region. Countries such as Hungary (63) and Greece (55) fall into lower categories, underscoring concerns about political influence, media concentration and journalist safety.

A large group of countries falls into what RSF classifies as “moderate” or “constrained” press freedom. These include major economies such as the United States (65), Japan (63), and South Korea (64), where structural and political challenges continue to affect journalistic work.

In Africa, the picture is mixed. Ghana (67) and Namibia (75) perform relatively well, while others, such as Zambia (57) and Niger (57), face tighter constraints. Similarly, Latin American countries show divergence, with Uruguay (65) and Costa Rica (73) outperforming regional peers like Bolivia (54) and Ecuador (54).

Asia-Pacific nations also display a broad spectrum. Australia and New Zealand remain in the moderate category, while countries such as Papua New Guinea (58) and Malaysia (56) highlight ongoing struggles with regulatory and political pressures.

At the lower end of the index, countries including Benin, Bolivia, Ecuador and Tanzania all score 54, placing them in the “reduced press freedom” category. Serbia, Brunei, Eswatini, Kosovo and Angola follow closely with scores of 53.

These rankings point to systemic issues such as censorship, legal intimidation, limited access to information and threats to journalists’ safety, factors RSF identifies as key barriers to a free press.

In a statement released on Wednesday, APES said the decision was driven by the “limitations and challenges” facing civic space, pointing directly to the Foreign Agents Law approved in May. The legislation, which imposes a 30% tax on funds and donations from abroad, has already forced several civil society organisations to shut down. Groups that fail to register with the Interior Ministry also face fines of up to $250,000.

APES warned of an “imminent risk” of an information blackout in El Salvador, noting that between January and June alone, 43 journalists had left the country, many of them unwilling to return for fear of arbitrary detention.

The organisation had already announced the closure of its offices inside the country, describing conditions under the law as “stifling, arbitrary and unlawful.” CNN en Español sought comment from the Salvadoran government but received no response.

The law has accelerated the closure of long-standing NGOs. In September, the Foundation for the Development of Social Sciences (Fudecso) dissolved after more than three decades, citing the shrinking civic space. The Foundation for the Study and Application of Law (Fesfad) also shut down, saying the legislation created legal insecurity and made financial sustainability impossible.

Human rights group Cristosal suspended operations in July, denouncing government harassment after the arrest of its lawyer and activist Ruth López, accused of illicit enrichment — charges she denies.

International bodies have raised alarm. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor said conditions for rights protection in El Salvador had “deteriorated,” while Amnesty International pointed to a “worrying increase” in harassment and criminalisation of journalists, activists and civil society groups.

Meanwhile, law makers from Bukele’s ruling Nuevas Ideas party insist the law is meant only to ensure transparency about foreign funding.

Landmines continue to haunt Southern Angola

Decades after the end of Angola’s brutal civil war, the country is still fighting a silent battle against landmines scattered across its southern provinces. These hidden explosives not only claim lives but also block access to farmland, delay infrastructure development, and hinder the resettlement of displaced communities. NGOs and international partners continue to press for increased funding and faster demining efforts to make rural areas safe and spur economic recovery.

Journalists push for fair wages

Media tensions are growing as Angolan journalists continue to demand improved pay and safer working conditions. The Minister of Telecommunications, Information, and Social Communication has stated that negotiations will not stop until both parties reach an understanding. This dispute highlights ongoing concerns about press freedom, the professionalisation of the media sector, and the economic challenges facing journalists in Angola.

Angola celebrates 50 years of independence with carnival

President João Lourenço joined thousands at an off-season carnival along Luanda’s Nova Marginal to mark the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence. The event was a major cultural showcase, featuring parades, music, and traditional performances that drew crowds from across the country. The celebration served as both a moment of national pride and a reminder of the challenges Angola has faced since independence, including war, political transition, and economic reform.

High-profile tax fraud trial begins

An investigation into one of Angola’s most significant financial scandals kicked off this week, involving 38 defendants accused of tax fraud. This case is expected to be closely watched as a litmus test for President Lourenço’s anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted prominent figures and sought to recover billions of dollars lost to graft. Analysts say the proceedings will be a measure of Angola’s ability to strengthen its legal system and restore investor confidence.

$7 billion spent annually on public sector salaries

Angola’s government disclosed that it spends around $7 billion annually on public sector salaries, a massive allocation in a country still facing post-war reconstruction needs and economic diversification challenges. This revelation has sparked debate about public spending priorities, efficiency in state institutions, and the need for reform to create more space for infrastructure, health, and education funding.

Wilo Prado: The journalist bridging traditional media and digital platforms in Ecuador

Prado began his path in communication under his birth name, Wilmer Prado, but soon became known professionally as Wilo Prado . While still a student at the Catholic University of Cuenca, his voice and presence landed him his first casting opportunity at local broadcaster Telecuenca. From there, he worked his way up from behind the cameras—editing, filming, even cleaning sets—before becoming a reporter and anchor.

Today, Prado anchors news programs for UnsionTV and serves as a correspondent for TC Televisión , two of Ecuador’s established networks. At the same time, he is building a strong presence on social media, especially TikTok, where audiences of all ages—from children to his 87-year-old grandmother—follow his updates.

For Prado, television remains the backbone of journalism. “Traditional media gave me credibility”, he says. But he is equally aware that audiences have migrated online. His approach has been to merge the two worlds: producing stories with the rigor of broadcast journalism and then adapting them for digital platforms.

That philosophy shaped the creation of Wilo Prado Estudio , his Cuenca-based company. The studio specializes in digital content and audiovisual production for companies and commercial brands, while also providing space for creators to record podcasts, film shows, or simply share their stories. Prado often emphasizes that victims of violence or injustice—rather than lawyers or spokespeople—are the ones invited to speak directly in his studio. “What better than the source itself telling their story?” he explains.

Prado’s dual role as journalist and entrepreneur is grounded in academic research. He recently completed a Master’s degree, producing both his personal brand and the studio as part of his final deliverables. His work included a scientific article on TikTok, digital journalism, and its impact on news consumption in Cuenca, published in Revista Pacha .

What sets Prado apart in a crowded digital space is his insistence on accuracy. “I don’t publish a story unless I’m 100% sure of it”, he says, even if that means posting days after others. His followers often comment: We were waiting for you, because we believe you. For Prado, that trust is the greatest achievement.

As he tells younger creators: “Don’t think about millions of followers or fame. Think about your focus. What do you want to achieve? For me, it’s making sure people who watch my content believe me”.

Sarah Sanabria: Humor, activism, and journalism in the digital age

Sanabria, who holds degrees in Social Communication, Journalism, and Audiovisual Production, began her career with internships at Radio Frecuencia Policial and Red Uno in Bolivia. Yet, it was online where she found both freedom and an audience. On TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and now YouTube, she mixes humor with sharp political critique, turning everyday realities into biting commentary.

“Satire isn’t complicated”, she says. “You just put reality out there, what’s funny is the truth”. This approach has allowed her to engage with thousands, tackling issues of human rights, politics , and social inequality with a unique blend of wit and analysis.

Her path, however, has not been without obstacles. As a trans woman with a distinct voice and style, Sarah has faced bullying and exclusion, both online and in professional spaces. Instead of silencing her, these experiences pushed her to turn vulnerability into strength, using humor and activism as tools of resistance.

For Sanabria, activism is inseparable from journalism. For eight years, she has campaigned for LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and broader human rights causes. Beyond raising awareness online, she believes in “ground-level activism”, what she calls “ant work” — helping people directly and pushing for change from the grassroots up.

Despite barriers in traditional media — which she argues often favor narrow, Eurocentric standards — Sanabria has embraced social platforms as tools for democratizing journalism. “If people demand it, you have to adapt”, she says. “No social network is bad; they’re just new spaces to tell stories”.

Now, she aims to consolidate her voice as a satirical journalist and activist who challenges the status quo while empowering others to see the world differently.

In Southeast Asia, this shift is especially dynamic. Many journalists also take on roles as broadcasters or familiar TV personalities, which helps them connect with audiences and communicate more effectively on platforms like TikTok. To highlight this evolution, we’ve compiled a list of the 50 most influential journalists on TikTok in the region.

With support from HypeAuditor , an AI-powered influencer marketing platform, we built the ranking using the Audience Quality Score (AQS) —a metric that goes beyond raw follower counts to assess real impact. AQS evaluates engagement, audience authenticity, growth patterns, and overall community quality.

This ranking reflects a broader transformation: journalism now lives on screens, scrolls, and seconds – and it’s speaking directly to millions.

But his work goes beyond daily news . Born in Pará, deep in the Amazon, Adriano has documented the realities of climate change , deforestation, and the fight for Indigenous rights. He’s reported from riverside villages, quilombola settlements, and remote rainforest territories — places where journalism rarely reaches.

As he puts it, his mission is to shed light on what many prefer to ignore: “What happens in the Amazon affects the entire planet”. With COP-30 approaching in Belém, his reporting feels more urgent than ever.

Covering these regions often means long hours on the road, limited connectivity, and working with minimal equipment. Yet, for Adriano, the effort is worth it if it means amplifying local voices that are too often left out of national and international conversations.

Carolay Morales: A journalist guided by stories and human connection

She first gained international attention in 2019 with Milagro del destino (Miracle of destiny) a radio piece about a young Venezuelan migrant, Alexander Beja, whose voice stopped a crowd — including the Mexican pop band Camila — in the middle of Bogotá. That unexpected moment led to a life-changing opportunity for Beja and earned Morales the prestigious King of Spain International Journalism Award.

From Colombia’s public television media RTVC to her growing platforms on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, she has consistently focused on migration, environmental conflict, and social justice , themes she explores with empathy, depth, and a sharp reporter’s eye.

Her videos, often shot with just a phone, combine solid research with human presence. What sets her apart isn’t just the stories she tells, but how she tells them, without filters, with sincerity, and always grounded in ethical journalism.

Her move to social media was born out of frustration: the stories cut from traditional news still deserved to be told. On TikTok, she found a platform for those overlooked narratives, and a highly engaged audience.

Moreover, Morales believes journalism is undergoing a transformation. Audiences today are asking for two things: stories that go beyond the problem to show possibilities, and journalists who are genuine, not scripted.

Looking ahead, Morales plans to continue expanding her digital presence while holding firmly to her editorial independence. She believes there are powerful, often invisible stories — what she calls “magical stories”, that can contribute to a deeper understanding of society . Stories that reveal overlooked voices, forgotten places, and the complexity behind human experiences.

Through it all, her mission remains the same: to see people — not headlines, not borders — and to keep telling the stories that deserve to be heard.

When Brazilian journalist Tom Bueno was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 20, he had no idea what the disease truly meant. Overwhelmed by a lack of information, he continued his career in mainstream media for years — until he realized he wasn’t the only one facing this knowledge gap.

In 2017, he founded Um Diabético , a digital media outlet focused entirely on diabetes. What began as a personal project quickly grew into Latin America ’s largest diabetes-focused platform, now reaching over 12 million people each month.

Rooted in lived experience, Um Diabético offers content across all major digital platforms — from videos and interviews to documentaries and podcasts. The platform covers a wide range of topics, including health education, innovation, public policy, nutrition, and quality of life. Its mission is to provide accessible, reliable, and relevant information not just for people with diabetes, but also for families, caregivers, and society at large.

More than just reporting on diabetes, Um Diabético speaks directly to those living with the condition, with empathy, respect, and purpose. For Tom Bueno, social media has become a vital tool for reaching underserved communities, especially in a country like Brazil, where 70% of the population depends on an overburdened public healthcare system.

"I believe there's still so much to do in terms of information and education about health and diabetes", Bueno says. His purpose is to turn Um Diabético into a trusted health communication outlet, bridging the gap between real stories and real change.

TikTok - once seen as a space for light entertainment - has emerged as a platform for journalistic voices. Whether breaking down political events, offering commentary, or explaining the news in a relatable tone, the app now serves as a tool for storytelling and public education.

For many journalists, it’s also a space to build a personal brand and practice their craft on their own terms.

To highlight this shift, we’ve compiled a list of the 100 most influential journalists on TikTok in Latin America.

The agreement, signed on Wednesday in Ouagadougou under the oversight of the Higher Council for Communication (CSC), aims to formalise the media’s contribution to national security and territorial recovery.

The pact, endorsed by representatives from radio, television, print, and online outlets, as well as the Burkinabe Media Observatory (OBM) and the CSC, outlines mutual commitments between the press, the state, and media regulators, Le Faso reports.

The document is structured around three main components. The first commits media outlets to publicise the activities of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), promote civic engagement, and contribute to national cohesion and intercommunal understanding.

The second outlines key demands from media actors toward the government , including tax reforms for media companies, full enforcement of the 2015 Right to Information law, and the establishment of a permanent consultation framework between the press and state institutions.

The third section designates the CSC and OBM as responsible for monitoring and facilitating implementation. A six-month review of the pact’s application has been proposed by CSC President Louis Modeste Ouédraogo, reported by Lefaso.net, a local news site.

After the four-hour amendment, adoption, and signing process, CSC President Louis Modeste Ouédraogo congratulated the journalists for their commitment. "We have just taken a historic, highly civic-minded step, which confirms the level of commitment of the entire national press to defending the general interest and safeguarding national unity," he said.

He also remarked that this is not an “attempt to muzzle the press.”

Director General for Radiodiffusion Télévision du Burkina (RTB), Atéridar Galip Somé noted that the state broadcaster has already aligned its editorial approach with national security priorities and described the pact as formalising an existing orientation.

The agreement follows a May 3 workshop organised by the CSC, which recommended a unified media framework to guide coverage during the security crisis.

Forensic investigators confirmed the identities of the remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition. The discovery followed the arrest of five suspects, three already appeared in court.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, one of the suspects led the police to the location of the bodies, the Star reports.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killings; however, a multi-agency task force is still carrying out investigations.

Ndlovu, founder of Capital Live FM in Mamelodi, was a well-known figure in regional media circles. His death has drawn reactions from government officials and media organisations, highlighting broader concerns over journalist safety in South Africa.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, visited the Ndlovu family on 4 May and announced plans to visit the radio station where Ndlovu worked. He condemned the killings and described them as part of a broader pattern of violence in the country, acknowledging Ndlovu’s commitment to public service through his work in the media.

"Mr. Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public. His loss, along with Ms. Mdhluli’s, is a tragic reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities," Morolong stated.

The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) in South Africa issued statements expressing concern over the deaths.

The U.S. has dropped two places, now ranking 57th out of 180 countries, falling behind Sierra Leone, the AFP reports.

“The United States is ranked 57th in the World Press Freedom Index, a decline for a country that has historically offered strong constitutional guarantees for press freedom and the work of journalists,” said Thibaut Bruttin, Director General of RSF. “Trump is acting across all these areas, perhaps in an attempt to implement a societal model with extensive freedom of expression but limited press freedom.”

RSF highlights what it sees as a deliberate dismantling of media -support mechanisms. Bruttin pointed to Trump’s decision to defund USAID, the U.S. development agency that has historically played a crucial role in supporting independent media in fragile democracies and conflict zones.

“USAID is now on the verge of disappearing,” Bruttin said. “It financed countless media outlets in countries where press freedom is already under threat. The implications of its loss are global.”

The report also raises alarm over the fate of USAGM, the agency that oversees America’s external broadcasting arms, including Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia. With an annual budget of $800 million, USAGM plays a critical role in delivering independent news to populations in autocratic or crisis-stricken regions, surpassing even the budgets of the BBC World Service, France Médias Monde, and Deutsche Welle.

Burkina Faso, in particular, has experienced a dramatic decline, dropping 19 places in the global rankings to 105th out of 180 countries, down from 86th in 2024 and 58th just two years ago. RSF describes the situation as a “freefall.”

“In Burkina Faso, journalists and columnists who are critical of the government are now being forcibly removed and taken to the frontline, ostensibly to observe ‘the reality on the ground,’ a situation that is quite simply unique on the continent,” said Camille Montagu, RSF’s research officer for sub-Saharan Africa.

The report also highlights a climate of fear and surveillance in Guinea, where journalists face mounting risks. “Journalists who remain in the country are closely watched by the authorities. They can be followed in the street,” said Jeanne Lagarde, RSF’s Advocacy Officer for Sub-Saharan Africa, told the AFP.

“They are bearing witness to a deterioration in their security situation,” Lagarde pointed to the abduction of journalist Habib Marouane Camara on December 3 as a troubling example of the growing threats.

While both Guinea and Burkina Faso present serious concerns, there was some positive movement elsewhere in the region.

Senegal climbed 20 places to 74th in this year’s index, although RSF notes that long-standing issues persist, particularly regarding the economic sustainability of media outlets.

The verdict was delivered by a jury in Essex County, New Jersey.

Background of the case

The lawsuit, filed on May 17, 2022, in the Essex County Superior Court, accused Kennedy Agyapong and media personality Frederick Asamoah of making defamatory statements against Anas during an episode of The Daddy Fred Show.

During the program, Agyapong allegedly made several damaging and false claims, including accusing Anas of being a criminal, a thief, and being responsible for the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Legal proceedings in New Jersey

The New Jersey court proceedings, presided over by Judge Jeffrey B. Beacham, saw Kennedy Agyapong and his brother, Ralph Agyapong, testify. As in the Ghanaian case, Agyapong attempted to use audiovisual material titled “Who Watches the Watchman” as evidence and cited the Ghanaian court ruling in his defense. However, the jury ruled 8-0 against him on all counts.

Anas’ legal team, led by Andrew Deheer, Esq., successfully argued the case, proving Agyapong’s statements to be false and defamatory.

Connection to Ahmed Suale’s murder

Ahmed Suale , a key member of Anas’ investigative team, was assassinated in 2019 following the release of Number 12, a documentary that exposed corruption in Ghanaian football. His murder shocked the nation and raised concerns over the safety of investigative journalists in Ghana.

The court documents outlined specific allegations made by Agyapong, including:

Falsely claiming that Anas had been convicted of crimes in Ghana, accusing Anas of orchestrating Ahmed Suale’s murder, asserting that Anas was responsible for the deaths of multiple Chinese nationals in Ghana, and labeling Anas as a thief.

Anas' response to the verdict

Following the court ruling, Anas released a statement expressing his sense of vindication and determination:

"I stand before you today with a profound sense of vindication and determination. Yesterday, in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, an eight-member jury delivered a unanimous verdict finding Kennedy Agyapong—former member of the Ghanaian Parliament—liable for defamation and awarding damages of 18 million U.S. dollars."

Anas emphasised that the ruling was a victory not just for him but also for the fight against falsehoods and character assassination in democratic societies. He pointed out the challenges of proving defamation in the United States, stating that the unanimous jury ruling was a testament to Agyapong’s malicious intent.

A contrast in justice : Ghana vs. the U.S.

Anas compared his legal battle in the United States with his experience in Ghana, where a similar defamation lawsuit in 2018 was dismissed. He expressed disappointment over how the Accra High Court’s Justice Eric Baah ruled against him, despite Agyapong admitting to lacking evidence for his claims.

He wrote, "Regrettably, the situation in Ghana was starkly different. In 2018, when I pursued a similar lawsuit there, justice eluded me. Despite Mr. Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence to support his calumnious claims, Justice Eric Baah of the Accra High Court not only denied me justice but also unjustly portrayed me - the civil plaintiff - as a criminal."

Anas cited Supreme Court Justice Kulendi’s condemnation of the Ghanaian ruling as a “violent abuse of judicial authority.”

"This ruling was later condemned by Supreme Court Justice Kulendi, who described it as a 'violent abuse of judicial authority.' Such outcomes are a stark reminder of the systemic flaws within our Ghanaian judicial system—flaws that demand urgent reform," he added.

Zimbabwe journalist still in custody after case adjourned

A High Court judge in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, March 12 adjourned the case of journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has been in custody since Feb. 24 over alleged incitement linked to interviews with a war veteran-turned-politician critical of the president. According to VOA , Mhlanga’s lawyers requested bail, but Justice Gibson Mandaza said more time was needed to review the case. His lawyer, Chris Mhike, said they await the court's next move, adding it would be “improper” to comment while proceedings are ongoing.

Hanke ranks Zimbabwe’s ZIG second worst in the world

Renowned economist Steve Hanke has ranked Zimbabwe’s ZiG currency as the second worst after Venezuela’s Bolivar. His analysis shows the ZiG lost 50% of its value against the US dollar over the past 10 months, largely due to inflation and lack of public trust. As reported by the New Zimbabwe , Though initially pegged at US$1: ZiG2.50, it now trades between ZiG33 and ZiG40 on the black market, far from the official US$1: ZiG26 rate. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe insists the currency remains viable, despite limited use in key sectors like fuel and passport payments.

Thousands jobless as Trump cuts $522 million aid to Zimbabwe

Thousands of Zimbabwean NGO and civil society workers have lost their jobs after major U.S. funding cuts under the Trump administration. Key sectors affected include HIV programmes, the arts, and humanitarian aid. The U.S. slashed 83% of USAID’s global budget, ending around 5,200 projects. In Zimbabwe alone, $388 million in ongoing USAID-funded initiatives have been abruptly halted, excluding indirect support from agencies like the World Food Programme, Zimeye reports.

Zimbabwe supply chain compromised by coerced cross-border drivers

Zimbabwean authorities are cracking down on truck drivers coerced by smugglers to transport contraband inland, putting transporters at risk of being penalized for carrying illegal goods. Freight News reports Mike Fitzmaurice of the Transit Assistance Bureau said smuggling often occurs at border points like Beitbridge, where drivers are bribed, and goods are sometimes brought in by people crossing the river on foot. He noted that while buses were once used for smuggling, authorities have since tightened controls.

Zimbabwe records 49 human-crocodile conflicts in two months, 9 killed, 11 injured

At least nine people have died and 11 others were injured in a surge of crocodile attacks over the past two months, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). The agency also reported the loss of 44 cattle and 60 goats in 49 cases of human-crocodile conflict. ZimParks has urged communities to stay vigilant near water bodies, especially during the rainy season, reports the New Zimbabwe .

Speaking in Damascus on Monday, January 20, she expressed hope that the incoming US administration, led by President Donald Trump, would take active steps to locate her son.

"Today, January 20th, President Donald Trump will be sworn into office, and a page will be turned. I have great hope that the Trump administration will sincerely engage in diligent work to bring Austin home," she said.

Austin Tice, a freelance journalist for outlets including AFP, The Washington Post, and CBS, was detained at a checkpoint in Syria in August 2012 while covering the country's civil war.

Debra Tice also disclosed the initial outreach efforts by the new US administration.

"His people have already reached out to me. I haven't experienced that for the last four years, and so I'm very much looking forward to their help and involvement, and I think they're going to be quick at it," she said.

She added that Syria’s new leadership was also committed to finding her son, Austin. "I have been privileged to meet with the new leadership of Syria," she told journalists in Damascus after meeting Syria's newly appointed leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Last month, US officials reported that Syria’s new leadership had cooperated in the search for Austin Tice, including conducting investigations at key locations.

Roger Carstens, the US special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving Tice’s case during a recent visit to Damascus, marking the first by US officials since Syrian Islamist-led forces toppled former President Bashar al-Assad.

"We feel it's our duty as the US government to press on until we know with certainty what happened to him, where he is, and to bring him home," Carstens said.

Okonjo-Iweala secures second term as WTO Chief

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first African and woman to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), has been reappointed for a second term. Her reappointment comes amid concerns over potential challenges from the return of former U.S. President Donald Trump, known for his skepticism of global trade frameworks. The WTO’s 166 members reached a consensus during a closed-door meeting, fast-tracking the process initially set to take months. African nations advocated for the swift decision to secure Okonjo-Iweala’s position before potential U.S. opposition. Her second term will commence after her current one concludes in August 2025. This extension is in line with preparations for the WTO’s next ministerial conference in Cameroon, slated for 2026. A senior research fellow at the Hinrich Foundation, Keith Rockwell noted that the unstated objective is to “accelerate the process because they did not want Trump’s team to come in and veto her as they did four years ago," Vanguard quotes.

Nigeria-France Partnership Strengthens Economic Ties

Nigeria and France have signed agreements worth €300 million aimed at enhancing critical infrastructure and improving agriculture and food security. The deals, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Paris, signify a lasting partnership between the two nations. The Guardian NG reports that some key highlights include agreements between the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Industry, as well as Zenith Bank’s inauguration in France. The funds will support projects in urban infrastructure, transportation, education (especially in STEM), and healthcare. President Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of sustainable development and mutual economic growth, laying the groundwork for long-term cooperation.

Naira appreciates against the dollar

The Naira recorded gains in both the parallel market and the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM). On Thursday, the Naira appreciated to N1,740 per dollar in the parallel market and N1,644.86 per dollar in NAFEM, reflecting a N15.97 improvement. Market turnover also surged, with a 66% increase in dollar trade volume, reaching $560.34 million. The development is an indication of an improved liquidity in the forex market, though the disparity between parallel and official rates widened to N95.14 per dollar.

U.S. evacuates Binance executive from Nigeria

Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained in Nigeria on money laundering charges, has been released on medical grounds. The U.S. deployed a medical aircraft to retrieve him. Gambaryan’s release follows diplomatic interventions and months of detention. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed gratitude to Nigeria, calling the outcome a testament to the U.S.-Nigeria partnership. Gambaryan has been detained since February due to a government crackdown on the exchange for alleged manipulation of the naira. Alongside him, Binance regional manager Nadeem Anjarwalla was also detained. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Gambaryan’s release reflects the commitment of both countries to collaborate effectively, Vanguard reports. The statement read in part, “The United States thanks the Government of Nigeria for releasing U.S. citizen Tigran Gambaryan on medical grounds, allowing him to return to the United States to receive the specialized medical care he requires.

Investigative Journalist detained at oil bunkering site

An investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has been detained by the Nigerian Army. He was arrested at an illegal oil bunkering site in Port Harcourt. The Army stated that the arrest stemmed from intelligence on a gang involved in pipeline sabotage. Soyombo and other suspects are undergoing investigations to determine their involvement. The incident has sparked public outcry, with FIJ calling for his immediate release, asserting that “journalism is not a crime.” The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that, “The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days running. Journalism is not a crime,” the Punch reported.

How AI is protecting journalists from persecution amid Venezuela's political crisis

Named "Venezuela Retweets," this initiative employs two AI-generated anchors, "La Chama" and "El Pana," to present news content that is often censored by the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

This approach comes amidst a hostile environment for journalists, where reporting has become increasingly perilous.

The situation for journalists in Venezuela has deteriorated significantly under Nicolás Maduro's government, especially after the disputed election victory in July.

An environment characterised by widespread repression and censorship has resulted in severe restrictions on freedom of speech. Journalists regularly face detention, harassment, and even loss of essential documents like passports, nullifying their ability to report effectively.

With over 16 journalists detained during recent anti-government protests and many others facing severe threats, traditional news dissemination has been compromised.

"Venezuela Retweets" aims to alleviate these risks by allowing journalists to report via AI avatars, thereby removing them from potential government backlash. The show not only provides an avenue for critical reporting but also ensures that the content is adapted for social media, increasing its shareability and decreasing the likelihood of government censorship.

The project's implementation is coordinated by a Colombian platform called Connectas, which emphasises the importance of protecting journalists akin to firefighting.

"You still need to attend the fire, even though it’s dangerous," said Carlos Eduardo Huertas, the director of Connectas.

By utilising AI to communicate vital information while keeping journalists safe from persecution, the initiative aims to inspire similar movements in other authoritarian regimes.

Dara, known for his courageous reporting on cyber scams and human trafficking, revealed that his arrest and subsequent imprisonment have left him without the courage to continue his work.

Mech Dara was arrested on September 30, 2024, on charges of inciting social disorder.

His arrest was linked to several social media posts that authorities claimed contained false information and were harmful to Cambodia and its leaders.

During his detention, Dara was subjected to intense interrogation and was reportedly forced to apologise publicly.

On October 23, 2024, a pro-government media outlet released a video of Dara in prison, where he apologised to former Prime Minister Hun Sen and his son, current Prime Minister Hun Manet.

In the video, Dara admitted to posting false information and promised not to do so in the future.

This experience, he said, has severely impacted his spirit and resolve.

"After my experience from the arrest -from the questioning and then being in the prison- it really , really crushed my soul, the soul that is always with me like no matter what is happening, I continue to report. But the spirit or soul is not with me anymore," Dara told AFP

Mech Dara's reporting has been instrumental in uncovering cyber scams and human trafficking operations in Cambodia.

His work has appeared in various international news outlets, and he was previously associated with the independent Voice of Democracy in Cambodia, which was shut down by authorities in February 2023.

In 2023, he received a Hero Award from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his investigations into human trafficking and forced criminality. This recognition highlighted the significant impact of his reporting on improving government responses to these issues.

Cambodia's constitution and the 1995 Press Law theoretically protect press freedom. However, these protections are often undermined by other laws and practices that restrict journalistic activities.

The application of criminal laws against journalists, including charges of defamation, incitement, and spreading false information, has created an environment of fear and self-censorship.

Media ownership in Cambodia is highly concentrated, with many outlets owned or controlled by individuals with close ties to the government.

This lack of media pluralism limits the diversity of viewpoints available to the public and often results in biased reporting that favours the government.

Based on human rights concerns, the decision follows international condemnation and calls for his release.

The 68-year-old Zamora, who has spent over 800 days in prison, claims his arrest is retaliation for exposing corruption. The prosecution plans to appeal despite his house arrest, citing flight risk.

His imprisonment has been criticised by various international bodies and human rights organisations. Zamora's prison conditions, described as torturous, improved after President Bernardo Arévalo took office, reports AFP.

Media at risk

Nepal’s media sector, significantly impacted by the pandemic, faces a critical juncture with ongoing job losses and salary cuts for journalists. Increased government pressure and censorship during the pandemic are escalating, exemplified by new bills aimed at consolidating media control and vague guidelines restricting communication on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. Labour rights issues are also prominent, with many journalists filing complaints for unpaid wages, particularly against Kantipur Media Group, leading to legal actions against the company. The environment mirrors global trends of economic instability and political pressures on media, raising concerns about the future of independent journalism in Nepal, My Republica reports.

Nepalis injured in Mexico

Three Nepali nationals were injured in an incident involving Mexican security forces on October 2 near the Mexico-Guatemala border. All 11 Nepali nationals in the vehicle are currently in detention by Mexican immigration authorities. The Nepali Embassy in Washington DC confirmed that no Nepali died in the shooting, which reportedly involved multiple nationalities. The embassy is in contact with Mexican authorities for further updates, according to The Kathmandu Post .

Floods

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Nepal after heavy flooding and landslides last week resulted in over 236 deaths and significant property damage. In a letter to Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Modi offered India’s assistance for relief and reconstruction efforts. As a result of the disaster, 173 people were injured, and 19 remain missing, with 17,120 having been rescued. Nepal's government is providing emergency relief and free medical treatment. Search and rescue operations are nearing completion, and efforts to assist victims’ families are ongoing across affected districts, ANI reports.

Tourism boom

In September 2024, Nepal recorded a record-breaking 96,305 foreign tourist arrivals, surpassing the previous high of 91,012 in September 2023, according to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). This marks a nearly 6% increase from last year. While arrivals from India decreased by 20% to 22,984 visitors, European and American tourist numbers rose significantly, with 17,104 Europeans (up 12%) and 11,549 Americans (up 36%) visiting in September. The overall total for January through September 2024 reached over 816,000 tourists, contributing positively to the Nepali economy. As reported by My Republica , the NTB aims to attract 1.6 million foreign tourists in the current fiscal year.

Petroleum grant from India

India has pledged a grant of Rs 15 billion for the construction of a petroleum pipeline and fuel storage facility in Nepal. An agreement between Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was signed in New Delhi for projects including a new pipeline from Siliguri to Jhapa and an extension from Amlekhgunj to Chitwan. IOC will build a storage tank in Jhapa, while NOC will invest approximately Rs 9.5 billion for a storage facility in Chitwan. These projects aim to improve fuel supply efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and minimise environmental impact. The Siliguri-Jhapa pipeline will primarily serve the eastern region of Nepal, addressing the inadequacies of the current Motihari-Amlekhgunj pipeline, reports My Republica .
