A mapped route generated via Google Maps reveals what is believed to be the longest continuous walkable path on Earth, stretching from Cape Town, South Africa, to Magadan, Russia.

Covering approximately 22,387 kilometres (13,910 miles), the theoretical journey covers 17 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Central Asia , and Siberia (Brilliant Maps, Beauty of Planet Earth).

According to route simulations, the entire walk would take around 4,492 hours, or over 187 days of continuous walking. Realistically, walking 8 hours per day would stretch the journey to more than 560 days.

The elevation change along the path is estimated at 117,693 metres ascended and 117,686 metres descended. That’s equivalent to climbing Mount Everest 13 times.

Despite being fully mapped and technically walkable, no one is known to have completed the entire route from Cape Town to Magadan. The route is believed to be more theoretical than practical, primarily due to logistical and geopolitical challenges.

The path cuts through regions with visa complexities, conflict zones, and unpredictable terrain and weather conditions , especially in parts of Sudan, Syria, and eastern Russia.

For context, one of the most famous recorded long-distance treks was undertaken by George Meegan, who walked from Tierra del Fuego in South America to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, a journey that covered 30,608 kilometres over 2,426 days between 1977 and 1983.

Though longer in total distance, his walk did not follow a single mapped road and still falls short of the Cape Town–Magadan route in terms of continuity.
