Was 2025 AFCON the most controversial yet?

To be clear, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has weathered disputes before. In 1976, there was no traditional final, with Morocco crowned champions through a round-robin format. In 1982, Ghana were forced to celebrate their triumph in private amid tensions with hosts Libya. Other flashpoints include Tunisia’s walk-off in 1978 and Nigeria’s withdrawal in 1996, both of which led to sanctions, as well as refereeing confusion in 2021 when a match was prematurely ended twice.

Yet CAF has historically maintained one consistent principle: results on the pitch are rarely overturned after the fact. Even in cases of officiating errors or disputes, governing bodies have avoided stripping titles or reassigning trophies once awarded.

That precedent is now under scrutiny following the 2025 tournament, where Senegal were initially crowned champions, awarded medals and celebrated victory — only for the decision to be reversed. The move has raised fresh concerns over the application of CAF regulations, particularly rules governing walk-offs and forfeits, and has left observers asking whether this marks an unprecedented break from tradition in African football.

Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy American financier who became one of the most notorious sex offenders of recent decades. He was arrested in July 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors. A month later, he was found dead in his cell at a New York jail while awaiting trial.

His death was ruled a suicide, but it brought an abrupt end to criminal proceedings that many hoped would expose the full extent of his network.

His death ended the criminal case against him, but it did not end the questions. One of the most important areas of continued scrutiny has been his travel history.

Understanding where Epstein travelled, and who travelled with him, could be central to understanding how he operated for so long within elite circles.

The World in Maps has created a map that highlights countries visited by Epstein, including nations across North America, South America , Europe, Africa and parts of Asia.

The map is based largely on released flight logs from Epstein’s private aircraft and journalistic investigations.

The flight logs and the ‘Lolita Express’

Epstein owned and used several aircraft over the years, including a Boeing 727 that became widely known in media reports as the “Lolita Express” .

Flight manifests from that aircraft, along with other planes he controlled, have been entered into court records and reported on extensively by outlets including the Associated Press and The Guardian.

The logs show frequent travel between the United States, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Norway, Russia, Morocco and Senegal.

Influential figures named in released files

Over the years, court documents, depositions and flight logs have referenced several high-profile figures who had contact with Epstein. These include:

Although the logs provide valuable insight, they do not represent a complete record of his lifetime travel.

The videos show him approaching women in public places (such as Accra Mall in Ghana), chatting with them briefly and then inviting them back to his hotel or residence.

In many of the clips that have circulated, he records these encounters from start to finish. Some of the footage ends up on TikTok, YouTube and a paid Telegram channel, and netizens say dozens of such videos featuring different women have been shared online.

Videos show much of the encounters from first contact to more private moments, raising questions about consent and privacy .

Many clips were later removed from his public TikTok account after the backlash intensified, and some content is reported to be behind a paid Telegram channel

The posts have sparked a wave of reactions on social media and beyond. Some users on X are calling for authorities to investigate the recordings, arguing that filming and distributing intimate moments without clear consent could be unlawful and unethical.

Ghanaian media personality MzGee has called for the man’s arrest amid concerns over how the content was created and shared.

Other social media users have debated the responsibility of the women involved, with some defending them and others criticising how easily they were persuaded to participate.

Some X posts reflect broader netizen concern about consent and privacy, with one user writing that the focus should be on “the serious breach of trust” in recording and distributing the footage without permission.

In response to the uproar, the man reportedly deleted several videos from his public accounts and issued comments explaining that the footage was “almost a year old” and suggesting women are “interested” in interacting with foreigners, according to messages attributed to him on Telegram.

At the time of reporting, there is no official statement yet from Ghanaian law enforcement, and it remains unclear whether authorities will pursue any legal action related to the recordings. Public debate continues, with many warning about the potential legal and ethical implications of filming and sharing sensitive personal interactions.
