The announcement was made in New York by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly. He stressed that “there will be no normalisation with Israel without a Palestinian state,” underscoring Riyadh’s stance that a two-state solution is the only pathway to peace.

The initiative was launched alongside the Global Alliance to Implement the Two-State Solution, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia, the EU, and Norway. According to the Saudi minister, the coalition’s purpose is to translate the New York Declaration, endorsed by more than 140 UN member states earlier this week, into concrete measures to support Palestinian governance and secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

The move comes as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) warns of worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where over 2.2 million people face famine-like conditions, according to the World Health Organisation. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that the agency, with its 12,000 staff in Gaza, is the “key asset” for rebuilding and stabilising the territory once the war ends.

The Saudi-backed coalition aims to empower the PA to eventually govern both the West Bank and Gaza . Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, also present at the New York meeting, said international consensus on the two-state solution is now stronger than ever, but remains blocked by “the extremist stance of the Israeli government.”

So far, 159 countries officially recognise Palestine, a number Riyadh says shows that statehood is becoming “an irreversible reality backed by international will.”

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), launched in 2021 by The Rockefeller Foundation, IKEA Foundation, and the Bezos Earth Fund, said the financing will support projects such as scaling solar mini-grids in Nigeria and retraining former coal workers in South Africa.

The alliance collaborates with both public and private partners to finance renewable energy initiatives across the African continent. Woochong Um, CEO of GEAPP, noted that with aid budgets under pressure, there is a growing need for new models capable of delivering development at scale.

“With aid budgets under pressure, we need new models to deliver development at scale”.

Africa is home to 600 million people without access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) . Despite abundant renewable resources, from solar and wind to hydro and geothermal, investment has lagged due to high financing costs, limited affordable capital, and fragmented infrastructure.

GEAPP’s latest report highlights that addressing both supply and demand in planning is key to building a robust green economy. Analysts say the $4.2 billion mobilisation, alongside a broader $100 billion green investment pledge secured by African nations at the 2025 Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, could be a turning point for the continent’s energy transition.

This development positions Africa to not only tackle its urgent development needs but also to play a central role in the global fight against climate change, and help the continent leapfrog into a renewable-powered future and sustainability.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, said that Washington is negotiating a swap line and is ready to purchase Argentine sovereign bonds, signalling direct support for Milei’s reform program. Bessent described the package as a “bridge to the election,” underscoring the Trump administration’s desire to back an ideological ally in South America.

Argentina has endured decades of economic instability, defaulting on sovereign debt three times since 2001 and repeatedly falling short on IMF agreements. Milei, a self-styled libertarian reformer, has sought to stabilise the peso, cut spending, and rebuild confidence after his party’s recent election setback triggered capital flight. The peso has lost over 90% of its value in the past five years, while inflation, although sharply down to 34% this year from 289% in 2024, remains among the world’s highest according to the IMF and the Argentine Central Bank .

The U.S. plan, which includes access to the Treasury’s Exchange Stabilisation Fund, would supplement Argentina’s $20 billion IMF program secured earlier this year.

The move marks a striking reversal for President Donald Trump , who has cut foreign aid elsewhere while confronting Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela. In Argentina, however, Trump is doubling down on Milei, whose pro-market agenda and public praise of Washington have made him a rare regional ally.

The plan has drawn criticism at home, with Senator Elizabeth Warren warning that it amounts to a bailout of “a political ally and his global investors before an election.” Economists, including Brad Setser of the Council on Foreign Relations, caution that the U.S. risks repeating the IMF’s experience of lending heavily to Argentina with little chance of repayment.

Washington’s $20 billion swap line would eclipse Argentina’s existing $18 billion agreement with China’s central bank, signalling a strategic push to counter Beijing’s growing financial footprint in Latin America.

For Milei, the U.S. backing offers both short-term stability and political cover.

“The situation in Haiti can be solved. It is not Mission Impossible,” Ruto said on September 22 at a high-level meeting on Haiti during the United Nations General Assembly.

The Kenyan leader emphasised that the greatest obstacles to the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) were not the gangs themselves, but the logistical shortcomings that hampered operations.

“The biggest challenge and impediment was logistics, transport, support,” he said. “If that remains unpredictable, I'm afraid the next mission may suffer the same as MSS, and therefore it is very important that, as we create that transition, we make sure that resources, resourcing the new mission becomes at the heart of the transition.”

Ruto credited the United States with trying to fill some of those gaps. But he also underlined how inadequate resources placed personnel at risk, pointing to the consequences of being supplied with unreliable equipment.

“They did make available logistics, vehicles, but unfortunately, most of the vehicles were secondhand vehicles, and therefore they broke down a lot, many times, and in fact, it put our personnel in great danger when they broke down in very dangerous places,” he said. “But at least they stepped up. We didn't, however, get any useful support from any other quarter.”

Turning to the Haitian gangs themselves, Ruto downplayed their strength, insisting they retreat quickly when challenged. He suggested that their tactics showed vulnerability rather than strength.

“The gangs, in my very honest opinion, are cowards,” he said. “With very minimal intervention, they have literally gone into hiding, occasionally showing up. Some guerrilla warfare of some sort."

The president also defended the performance of the MSS.

“The achievements of the MSS are too often understated,” he said. “When the first contingent arrived in Port au Prince few could have imagined that a Boeing 787 one day, would land at the local airport without a risk of being brought down.”

Ruto also reiterated his message: that the international community had the means to turn the tide in Haiti, provided it acted with urgency and provided adequate support.

“Therefore, I thought I would use this meeting moving to the attention of the international community that the situation in Haiti can and must be solved.”

Activists from the Justicialist Party filled the streets, chanting and cheering as Fernández appeared briefly on her balcony to wave and applaud them. Many held banners and repeated calls for her freedom, framing her confinement as part of a wider political struggle.

“She gave dignity to the people ”, said Raul Atronito, one of the demonstrators, recalling that his father only received a pension during Fernández’s presidency. Another supporter, Vanesa Queyffer, argued that her release was vital to “reverse the disastrous political moment our country is going through”.

Fernández is serving a six-year house arrest sentence after Argentina’s Supreme Court upheld her conviction for fraudulent administration linked to public works contracts. The ruling also bars her permanently from holding office. Her detention has become a rallying point for the opposition, intensifying tensions ahead of the October 26 congressional elections , where President Javier Milei’s government faces a key test in both chambers of Congress.

From January 2022 to June 2025, the United States is credited with roughly US$126.1 billion in aid to Ukraine, while the European Union and its institutions provide about US$69.5 billion.

A bar chart from World Visualized overlays contributions from Germany (US$23.4 billion), the UK (US$20.5 billion), Japan (US$15 billion), Canada (US$13.1 billion), Denmark (US$11.1 billion), the Netherlands (US$9.9 billion), Sweden (US$8.4 billion) and France (US$8.4 billion).

These numbers come from the Ukraine Support Tracker (UST) maintained by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy , which aggregates military, financial and humanitarian pledges by governments since Russia’s full‑scale invasion.

According to the tracker’s data summarised by Al Jazeera , Ukraine had received more than €309 billion (about US$360 billion) in aid as of June 30 2025. This total comprises €149.26 billion in military assistance, €139.34 billion in financial aid, and €21.04 billion in humanitarian support.

The United States remains the single largest donor nation, committing €114.64 billion (roughly US$134 billion) to Ukraine by June 30 2025. Its support includes €64.6 billion in weapons and equipment, €46.6 billion in financial grants and loans, and €3.4 billion in humanitarian assistance.

The European Union (EU), meaning the European Commission and Council rather than the member states individually, is the second‑largest contributor, with €63.19 billion (US$74 billion) in aid. Among individual countries, Germany ranks third, committing around €21.29 billion (US$25 billion), followed by the United Kingdom with €18.6 billion (US$21 billion) and Japan with €13.57 billion (US$15 billion).

When all European countries are considered together, they have allocated €167.4 billion (US$195 billion)—a larger sum than the United States’ €114.6 billion allocation. Europe has also pledged €257.4 billion (US$300 billion) in total commitments compared with the US’s €119 billion.

The Kiel Institute’s Ukraine Support Tracker has monitored aid to Kyiv from January 24 2022, onward. It covers 41 donor countries, including EU member states, the G7 and other partners, and includes government‑to‑government transfers but excludes private donations and international‑organisation funds. The dataset is updated quarterly and is widely cited by journalists and policymakers.

The project, spearheaded by Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), involves a Japanese consortium comprising Oriental Consultants Global, Intem Consulting, and Yachiyo Engineering.

The partnership follows an MoU signed on April 10, 2025, between Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and JICA’s Nigeria representative, Yuzurio Susumu. It sets the foundation for long-term collaboration to support Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem.

The initiative features two components:

NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “renewed hope agenda” and supports Nigeria’s ambitions to diversify the economy and become a regional tech leader. He also cited the success of earlier Nigeria-Japan collaborations, such as the iHatch incubation program, which created over 117 direct and 370 indirect jobs.

He described the collaboration as a “strategic alignment of innovation ecosystems,” and praised the Japanese government for choosing to invest in Nigeria’s digital future. He indicated that with Japan’s renowned experience in technological excellence and Nigeria’s growing youth-driven innovation landscape, this partnership sets a foundation for mutual prosperity.

Spanning nearly six years (2025–2030), the initiative also aims to bridge Nigerian and Japanese tech ecosystems through exchange programs and startup participation in global accelerator events.

With Nigeria targeting a $1 trillion economy by 2030, the project is expected to boost job creation, attract foreign investment, and position Nigeria as a leading hub for innovation in Africa.

Japan is strengthening its involvement in Africa’s tech sector through a range of startup-driven initiatives spearheaded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Through its flagship program, Project NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) , JICA has launched and funded accelerator programs and pitch competitions in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana. Working in partnership with local startup hubs, the agency aims to build sustainable innovation ecosystems and scale locally driven solutions to key development challenges across the continent.

Libya’s collapse influences Trump’s hesitation on Iran strikes

U.S. President Donald Trump is delaying approval of potential airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, citing Libya’s post-intervention collapse as a warning against regime change. According to sources close to the administration, Trump has repeatedly referred to the 2011 NATO-led intervention in Libya, where the fall of Muammar Gaddafi led to civil war and instability, as a model to avoid.

Greek foreign minister to visit Libya for maritime talks

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis will travel to Libya in early July to address unresolved maritime boundary issues, diplomatic sources confirmed. The visit follows Libya’s reaction to Greece’s recent offshore exploration licenses south of Crete, which has reignited bilateral tensions. Gerapetritis is expected to visit both Tripoli and Benghazi, reflecting Libya’s divided political landscape.

Russia shifts military assets to Libya amid uncertainty in Syria

Russia has begun relocating military equipment to Libya as the future of its bases in Syria remains uncertain following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December. The Hmeimin airbase and Tartus naval facility, long-standing Russian outposts in Syria, now face possible closure as Western governments urge Syria’s new interim leadership, led by former rebel Ahmed al-Sharaa, to reconsider Moscow’s military presence.

UNHCR seeks $106 million to support Sudanese refugees in Libya

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has launched an urgent appeal for $106 million to assist approximately 313,000 Sudanese refugees currently in Libya. Carmen Sakhr, UNHCR's head in Libya, stated that the agency has received only 18% of the needed funding, warning that the shortfall is severely limiting humanitarian operations. "Current resources cover only a fraction of what is required," she said, stressing the growing needs on the ground. Libya hosts refugees from at least seven countries, with a total displaced population estimated at nearly 4 million due to ongoing regional conflicts.

Libya’s elections body signs MoU to boost civic education

Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Libyan Academy for Postgraduate Studies to strengthen civic education and promote democratic participation nationwide. The agreement, signed on June 22 in Tripoli by HNEC Chairman Emad Al-Sayah and Academy President Ramadan Al-Madani, establishes a framework for cooperation in electoral awareness, public education, and research on democratic governance.

Fathers in Costa Rica to enjoy paid paternity leave

Currently, private sector fathers receive just eight days of paternity leave, spread over four weeks. The proposed legislation, officially titled the Law for Paternity Leave in Costa Rica (File No. 25.049), aims to eliminate this disparity by amending Article 95 of the Labour Code to ensure equal leave for all fathers, regardless of employment type, The Tico Times report.

The bill, introduced by Congresswoman Luz Mary Alpízar Loaiza of the Social Democratic Progress Party, argues that unequal paternity leave violates the principle of equal rights.

“Parenthood should not depend on the type of employment,” she stated. “All children deserve the same support and presence from their fathers in the earliest days of life.”

Why it matters

This move comes amid growing concerns over demographic and social pressures in the country. According to the United Nations Population Fund’s 2025 State of World Population Report , 11% of respondents in Costa Rica cited unequal caregiving responsibilities as a reason for postponing or avoiding parenthood.

The report also noted a growing gap between desired and actual family size, influenced by economic and cultural constraints.

If passed, the law would impose penalties on employers who deny the leave, including an indemnity of six months’ salary in addition to standard labour rights. Supporters see the bill as a major step toward gender equality and shared parenting responsibilities, while critics argue it could burden small businesses.

Compared to regional neighbours like Chile and Uruguay, where paternity leave is more generous, and countries like Sweden that offer extended shared parental leave, Costa Rica’s private sector has lagged.

This proposed reform could bring the country closer to international standards for family support and gender equity.

The initiative , led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from Japan and support from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, will target schools, hospitals, kindergartens, and public transport.

The project responds to frequent energy crises caused by extreme weather, aiming to make the country’s systems more climate-resilient. Public buildings will be upgraded with insulation, energy-efficient windows, solar panels, and heat pumps, with measures expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve comfort year-round.

In parallel, clean transport pilots will introduce electric vehicles, charging stations, and real-time air quality monitoring.

Japan is contributing advanced technology and financing through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) , which allows for emissions reduction cooperation under the Paris Agreement.

The initiative is part of Uzbekistan’s national goal to cut emissions by 35% and raise clean energy to 25% by 2030.

Beyond emissions, the project promises practical benefits like lower energy bills, improved public health, and more stable indoor climates during extreme heat or cold.

“This project is not just about the environment. It’s about comfort, health, and a sustainable future,” UNDP and the national Agency for Energy Efficiency noted.

Other countries are advancing with decarbonization efforts, with China leading the way, where one of its cities, Shenzhen, became the world’s first city to fully electrify its bus network, deploying 16,000 electric buses by late 2017. This shift cuts fuel use by 345,000 barrels and reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.35 million tonnes annually. The city also built 8,000 charging points and 510 charging stations to support the fleet. Other countries include Chile, Russia, Denmark, Norway and South Africa.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) leads various global decarbonization initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development with key efforts including, Carbon Payments for Development (CP4D) Facility , launched in 2021, to help developing countries access carbon markets and implement emission-reducing projects, Greening Moonshot initiative to reduce carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 through energy-efficient upgrades, saving millions while cutting emissions by over 3,500 tonnes annually.

What is driving Mauritania's support for Gaza and Iran

As Iran and Israel exchange missile strikes, the Mauritanian government, political parties, religious leaders, and civil society have all condemned what they describe as Israeli aggression.

The government formally denounced Israeli strikes on Iran, citing violations of sovereignty and international law, as the ruling El Insaf Party emphasised Mauritania’s stance on non-interference and solidarity with oppressed people.

Public sentiment has also surged, with street protests by the National Alliance for the Support of the Palestinian People, which organised a mass rally in Nouakchott under the slogan: “Yes to Breaking the Siege.” Participants reaffirmed their popular support for the resistance in Gaza, condemning the recent “criminal aggression” against Iran, which they described as exposing the fascist nature of the Zionist entity, emboldened by direct American and Western backing.

Iran is increasingly portrayed in Mauritanian discourse as a “resistance force” defending the Palestinian cause since Gaza remains a powerful emotional symbol, and Iranian retaliation is widely seen as avenging Palestinian suffering.

Islamist political parties, including Tawassoul and Hizb al-Fadhila, condemned Israeli actions as part of a broader campaign against the Muslim world. Tawassoul called the conflict “a wake-up call for global resistance.”

Students also held a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott, denouncing the Israeli attack on Iran and reiterating a firm rejection of normalisation with the occupation.

In a statement , the group described the strike as part of a broader Zionist project targeting the Muslim world, adding:“This adds to the occupation’s record of terrorism and aggression.”

Social media has played a key role in shaping public opinion, with viral posts and hashtags such as “Thank you, Iran, for avenging Gaza’s children” have flooded Mauritanian Facebook and Twitter. Videos of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and poems celebrating Iranian strikes further stoked public emotion.

The support has been unanimous, with some nationalist and Baathist voices accusing Iran of using the Palestinian cause for sectarian purposes.

Mauritania’s political stance is also evident in its foreign policy, where it responded to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza by expelling Israeli embassy staff and suspending political and economic ties with Tel Aviv.

It suspended political and economic ties with Israel in January 2009, following calls by ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal for Arab nations to sever relations.

At the time, Mauritania was one of only three Arab countries with formal ties to Israel, alongside Jordan and Egypt.

The North African nation has maintained cooperative relations with Iran, engaging in discussions on expanding bilateral ties in energy, trade, and infrastructure.

In recent months, Iran’s ambassador to Nouakchott met with the Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Oil to explore joint initiatives, and trade representatives from both countries met at Iran Expo 2025 to deepen commercial and technological cooperation.

For many Mauritanians, the Gaza-Iran-Israel conflict is more than geopolitical as it taps into long-standing religious, emotional, and strategic identities.

During the call, the Amir reaffirmed Qatar’s strong condemnation of the recent Israeli strike on Iranian territory, calling it a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty and international law. He also emphasised the importance of de-escalation and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions to achieve lasting peace in the region.

Iran tells Qatar it won’t negotiate under fire

Iran has informed Qatari mediators that it will not engage in ceasefire or nuclear deal negotiations while under attack, according to a source familiar with the talks, reported by PressBee . The message, also conveyed to Oman, makes clear that Tehran will only consider diplomatic discussions, whether related to a truce with Israel or the revival of the nuclear agreement with the U.S. after it completes its military response to recent Israeli strikes.

Qatar to support the establishment of Islamic medical school

Ghana’s Minister for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has requested support from the Qatar Education Foundation to establish an Islamic Medical School in the Northern Region. The proposed institution, intended to serve as a teaching hospital for the University for Development Studies, aims to expand access to medical education and improve healthcare delivery in underserved areas. Mr. Iddrisu made the appeal during a meeting in Accra with Qatar’s Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Mesallam.

Qatar and France deepen bilateral ties

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, co-chaired the third Qatar-France Strategic Dialogue in Paris on June 12. The meeting reviewed progress made since the Amir of Qatar’s state visit to France in February 2024, highlighting new cooperation across security, defence, economy, trade, investment, and education. Both nations reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations and committed to further expanding their strategic partnership.

Qatar records over $2.7 billion in FDI in 2024

Qatar attracted more than $2.7 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2024, according to the Investment Promotion Agency Qatar (Invest Qatar) , marking a 110% year-on-year increase in project numbers and a 123% rise in job creation. A total of 241 new projects were established, generating over 9,000 jobs. Key investment sectors included electric power generation, data processing and hosting, retail and wholesale trade, scientific research and development, and water and sewage systems.

As of late April, over 726,000 Sudanese refugees have entered Chad’s eastern provinces, including Wadi Fira and East Ennedi, straining resources and exposing vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls to exploitation, abuse, and food insecurity, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Chad situation report .

Lake Chad province in the west hosts over 268,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), uprooted by armed violence and flooding. Across the regions, access to healthcare, clean water , shelter, and basic protection is deteriorating.

The situation has worsened since the suspension of U.S. funding from USAID and the Bureau of Population, Refugees , and Migration (PRM) support that had sustained much of the lifesaving response.

The report also reveals that the funding halt has forced the closure of maternity wards, suspended mobile clinics, and disrupted the delivery of essential reproductive health supplies to over 80 health facilities.

Despite escalating needs, UNFPA has received less than $1 million of the $27 million it urgently requires for 2025.

In April 2025 alone, the UNFPA undertook the following;

UNFPA is coordinating with partners across Chad to maintain operations, including safety audits in IDP camps, GBV case management, and youth education on reproductive health.

Chad’s crisis is no longer looming, it is here, escalating, and underfunded.

The cost of inaction will be measured in lives lost, dignity denied, and futures cut short.

Ghanaian sports scientist Emmanuel Adjei will leave Munich on June 7 for a 10,000-kilometre solo ride to his birthplace, Teshie, a coastal town in Accra, seeking to raise €100,000 for his education charity, EduSpots.

“I am driven to use cycling to mobilize funds, support, and raise awareness to ignite and sustain community-led change through education and empowerment in underserved Ghanaian communities,” Adjei said. Calling Ghana a “sports-enthusiastic nation,” he hopes to “use the power of sports–cycling to champion education.”

His journey serves as a platform to increase awareness of the importance of education in transforming lives, whilst raising funds to support sustainable and localised education initiatives. He also hopes to inspire action and representation, encouraging others to pursue their dreams while giving back to society and creating a level playing field for inclusive participation, MyJoyOnline reports.

EduSpots, a registered NGO in Ghana and the United Kingdom trains more than 400 volunteers (catalysts) who run 50 community learning centres known as “spots.”

Adjei’s effort adds to a growing wave of Ghanaian endurance adventurers using overland travel to support charitable causes and promote national identity.

In 2023, a group of Ghanaian tourism enthusiasts, known as Wanderlust Ghana, drove overland from Accra to London to spotlight African adventure tourism and raise awareness around philanthropy and Pan-African connectivity.

During crisis talks held in Harare, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit called for coordinated efforts between leaders from eastern and southern African nations to address the escalating conflict.

Elias Magosi, Executive Secretary of SADC, emphasised the region's commitment to supporting the DRC. "Summit reaffirmed its solidarity and unwavering commitment to continue supporting the DRC in its pursuit of safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as sustainable peace, security, and development," Magosi stated.

Zimbabwe's President and SADC Chairperson, Emmerson Mnangagwa, highlighted the collective responsibility of member states to foster lasting peace in the region. "It is the individual and collective duty of all member states to do much more towards permanently silencing the guns if we are to succeed in achieving these aspirations," Mnangagwa said.

DRC President Felix Tshisekedi participated virtually in the summit, which was convened following the deaths of 13 South African and three Malawian soldiers in recent clashes near Goma. These troops were deployed as part of regional peacekeeping operations.

After capturing Goma, M23 rebels advanced southward on Friday, vowing to march all the way to the DRC capital, Kinshasa, raising concerns over further instability in the region.

Suzuki’s months-long odyssey, which began last summer, has captured the hearts of thousands on social media , where he shared regular updates of his trek.

“It’s been a very good experience,” Suzuki told AFP after crossing the finish line. He recounted several intense moments along the way, including an encounter with a lion and two incidents where his rickshaw was struck by trucks. Despite these setbacks, Suzuki persevered. “I couldn’t make it so without you guys,” a tearful Suzuki told his supporters gathered to cheer him on. “That’s why I’m really happy to see you guys and run together until the finish line.”

Suzuki’s journey took him through diverse terrains and cultures, from the bustling streets of Nairobi to the arid landscapes of Namibia. Along the way, he braved harsh conditions , including a scarcity of food and water. “When I was crossing Namibia, there was nothing everywhere. It was very difficult to get water or food. I slept outside every time,” Suzuki recalled.

His determination and resilience inspired many, including Alvyn Andrews, a supporter who followed Suzuki from Namibia to South Africa. “I caught up with him and offered him water just as he got out of Namibia,” Andrews said. “It’s just amazing to see how the people in South Africa have come out to support him.”

This sad story begins with the tragic loss of her 13-year-old son, Lucas, who took his own life after enduring relentless bullying in 2023.

The mother, Severine Vermard, describes her journey through grief as both harrowing and transformative. She recalls Lucas as a bright, kind-hearted boy who was targeted for his differences (being gay). The bullying he faced was not only physical but also emotional, leaving deep scars that ultimately led to his tragic decision.

Determined to ensure that no other family experiences such a loss, she channelled her grief into writing. Her book, "Lucas's Light: Shining Through the Darkness of Bullying," is a tribute to her son and a powerful tool for education and advocacy.

"I decided to write a book to raise awareness about harassment so that people would remember Lucas and the fight I am waging right now to get justice for him so that there are no more victims," she told AFP.

Through personal anecdotes, research, and practical advice, the book aims to shed light on the pervasive issue of bullying and its severe consequences.

In addition to raising awareness, the book offers resources for bullying victims. It includes contact information for support organisations, tips for coping with grief, and advice on how to create a safe and inclusive environment for all children.

The mother emphasises the importance of open communication and the need for communities to come together to address this critical issue.

Feminists and women's rights activists gathered in Avignon, France, on Thursday, December 19, to support Gisèle Pélicot ahead of the verdict in her high-profile rape trial. The trial, which has drawn significant public attention, involves dozens of men accused of raping Pélicot while she was drugged and unconscious, allegedly orchestrated by her now ex-husband. Activists displayed banners and placards with messages such as "Victims, we believe you" and "Rape has no nationality" outside the Palace of Justice—the demonstration aimed to show support for Pélicot and all victims of sexual violence. Notes with "Gentle words for Gisèle" were also posted on fences, offering encouragement and solidarity.
