August 2026, former Vice President Howard-Taylor was cornered and arrested at Roberts International Airport while trying to flee Liberia.

Authorities have hit her with 8 severe counts, including drug trafficking , money laundering, linking her to a massive 4.2-ton cocaine bust worth $317 million.

But how did a former Vice President get involved with drugs in the first place?

Here's the story.

Jewel Howard-Taylor served as Liberia's Vice President from 2018-2024 with George Weah, as President. Through her close associate, Sheikh Kante Bashiru, she was introduced to two of the cocaine trafficking ring members who are Ukrainian nationals known as Mihovil Vrovak (a.k.a Michael) and Taras Zadereiko, (a.k.a Tony) in 2022. The meeting reportedly took place at her residence in Congo Town.

Investigators allege that the cocaine network operated across Europe and Africa.

But according to the government’s allegations, the meeting in Liberia was only the beginning. She later traveled to Dubai to meet the leader of the ring who is in the person of Nikola Invancic, a Croatian national.

And this is where the case takes a dramatic turn.

Howard-Taylor allegedly travelled to Dubai and stayed at the H. Hotel near the Trade Centre Roundabout on Sheikh Zayed Road.

According to the charge sheet, a meeting took place at the hotel where the group discussed using Liberia as a transit point for cocaine shipments destined for Europe.

Prosecutors allege that Howard-Taylor agreed to support the arrangement.

But the allegations did not stop at the Dubai meeting.

The government claims that while Howard-Taylor was in Dubai, Ivancic gave her US$45,000, which was described as money for shopping.

And investigators say she did not receive the money privately.

According to the charge sheet, Sheikh Bashiru Kante, Taras Zadereiko and Mihovil Vrovac were present when the money was allegedly handed over.

After returning to Liberia, prosecutors allege that Howard-Taylor continued communicating with members of the network.

Prosecutors say another US$75,000 was later provided through Kante for the Jewel Star Fish Foundation, an organisation associated with Howard-Taylor.

Investigators also allege that a further US$15,000 payment was made through Kante in August 2026 for her foundation, Jewel Starfish Foundation.

That would bring the payments cited in the government’s allegations to US$135,000.

July 2026, authorities seized a massive 4.2-ton cocaine worth $317 million which got traced to Howard-Taylor, leading to her arrest at Roberts International Airport as she attempted to leave Liberia.

She was subsequently charged with several offences, including drug trafficking-related crimes, criminal conspiracy, facilitation, solicitation and money laundering.

The case is yet to go to trial but her office, together with her lawyers have denied the accusations, describing the case as politically motivated and insisting that the allegations are false. Her legal team has also indicated that it intends to challenge the case. Even former President George Weah has come to her defense saying, "rule of law" is being trampled upon.

The three foreign nationals — Nikola Ivancic, Mihovil Vrovac and Taras Zadereiko — have been charged in absentia because they are not currently in Liberian custody.

What makes the case particularly striking is the position Howard-Taylor occupied when some of these alleged encounters took place.

She was not an ordinary political figure but Liberia’s vice president. In fact it was her administration that introduced the Controlled Drugs Act in 2023. The same criminal code she is being charged with today. In this Act, cocaine, is the highest tier of illicit drug with the punishment set at 25 years maximum with no potential for bail.

And prosecutors are alleging that the network was not simply trying to move cocaine through Liberia, but was seeking access and protection at the highest levels of government.

That is ultimately what investigators will have to prove.

For now, the central allegation is that a sitting vice president was introduced to two alleged members of an international drug network, travelled to Dubai to meet the alleged leader, discussed using Liberia as a cocaine transit route and subsequently received large sums of money.

Whether those allegations survive scrutiny in court is the question that remains.
