70-million-year-old raptor-like dinosaur discovered in Argentina: Video
A team of Argentine and Japanese researchers has discovered the fossilized remains of a previously unknown species of carnivorous dinosaur that roamed southern Patagonia approximately 70 million years ago, shortly before the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs.
The newly identified species, named Kank Australis, was unearthed in the province of Santa Cruz, near the town of El Calafate. The remains are currently being studied by paleontologist Matías Motta of the Bernardino Rivadavia Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences.
Footage from the excavation site shows the fossilized bones recovered during the research effort, shedding new light on the diversity of dinosaur species that inhabited South America during the Late Cretaceous period.
