Bolivia’s President slashes salaries by half amid growing economic crisis

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz announced on Monday, May 25, that he and his ministers will take a 50 per cent pay cut as the country grapples with a worsening economic and social crisis marked by protests and road blockades.

Speaking during a ceremony commemorating the 217th anniversary of Sucre’s liberation movement, Paz said the decision was meant to demonstrate solidarity with Bolivians facing hardship.

“I want to inform you that this president, together with his ministers, has decided to reduce our salaries by 50 per cent as part of our effort and commitment to the country,” Paz said during a press conference.

According to Bolivia’s Ministry of the Presidency, Paz currently earns 24,251 bolivianos (about $3,511) per month. Under the new measure, his salary will drop to approximately 12,489 bolivianos ($1,808).
